[slim] Re: Tag problems with 6.5.0

2006-09-27 Thread Dougal

I too had a similar issue with some mp3 tracks getting jumbled up in
silserver, I fixed it by opening the folder containing the offending
files in my tag editor and completly removing both v1 and v2 tags
saving them then repopulating id3v2 tag only.
then doing a clear and rescan.
Worth a try.

[slim] Re: Tag problems with 6.5.0

2006-09-27 Thread Siduhe

Brian,

I had similar problems when I first started using 6.5 beta and it
turned out to be an issue with the ID3v1 tag not being identical with
the ID3v2.3 tag - seemed to be caused by MusicIP. I think APE tags may
be an indication of Replaygain info but I could be wrong about that.

I downloaded a small program from the MusicIP site called
ID3TagCleaner, ran it over the ID3v1 tags, it found a load of errors,
so I just deleted all the ID3v1 tags (as I don't have any piece of kit
that can't use v2.3+).

Been fine ever since.

Rerally thats an MCE plugin rather than a SS v7 feature, i know what
you mean though. I'd like to write a plugin for MediaPortal (open
source MCE alternative) but don't have the time of the skills right
now. Seems a shame to have a great music server platform in the shape
of SS and have to have a second database for MediaPortals MyMusic too.

Ah well, perhaps one day...

the ability to have multiple library folders would cut down on the

[slim] Can't find Pandora

2006-09-27 Thread chris . mason

Hi all,

I think I must be going mad...
I just recently upgraded to Slimserver 6.5 (from 6.3.1) on Windows XP
(good work by the way, big improvement).

I can't find Pandora anywhere in the SlimServer settings or the
Squeezebox menus. I can access it via Squeezenetwork no problem.

Its not listed under plugins or network radio.

Any ideas?

Chris.

Apologies, I didn't realise it was on the beta site (I'm in the beta
test group).

Try http://music.predixis.com/beta.html

You have to run it from a command window but I found the instructions
pretty straightfoward. I would strongly advise creating a test library
first and running it across that to see if it fixes the problem. You
don't want to accidentally delete all of your tags on all of your
files, or run it on everything and find it doesn't work for your
particular issue.

the player playlists. Is this the expected behavior?

Well, since you are doing a 'dump and rescan' of your database, your
player no longer has any reason to suspect the current playlist in
memory is at all valid. So, it makes sense that when you do a full
rescan ... EVERYTHING is nulled out and rebuilt.

2006-09-27 Thread dip

I don't like this behaviour. Usually after amending tags of my existing
files, after deleting files or installing a new version of slimserver I
make a wipe and rescan (otherwise there are often annoying side
effects). I would prefer that in this case the now playing playlist is
maintained since the wipe and rescan has nothing to do with the content
of the now playing list. If e.g. my wife has selected some songs for
playing and would like to continue hearing these songs or to restart
hearing that's no longer possible.

I really don't see why it is so hard to incorporate this functionality.
Wouldn't it be a simple matter of keeping a list of
PATH_TO_MUSIC_FOLDERS in the database, or in the config file ... the
scanner just iterates through the list as it completes the scanning
process until it's out of paths...

Another benefit of this is that you can then build functionality around
this like segregated music libraries (Wife's stuff, My Stuff, Party
Stuff, whatever...), without having to go through the trouble of
tagging all your songs in some way to help you identify them, or going
through the trouble of making playlists of all the songs your wife
 likes, etc...

You can envision having the UI incorporate some functionality like,
Play only songs from drive X:\ or, Click to select folders to
 include in the playlist, etc...

Regarding QNAP(TS101)The ability to exist in any form with SS7 would be
good.It would appear that 6.5 does not.Discs not spinning down, web user
interface becoming all but useless. So all suggestions for features for
R7/Qnap maybecome irrelevant.

There are currently 3 rescan options:

1. Look for New and Changed Music
2. Dump and rescan
3. Playlists only

Options 1. and 3. should not clear your playlist ... you should only
need option 2 if there's a specific reason. I believe option 1.
incorporates the functionality you are looking for.

I do not have the playboy channel enabled, but if I enter

into my web browser I can see the channel description without problem.
So it is not blocked in anyway and I can see it throught a web browser

request in the same way that a browser is.

I see the same errors in my log whether I start the plugin from a
hardware player or from the WebUI.

I'm using the 9-26 Nightly RPM of 6.5.1 and version 0.6.3 the Sirius
Plugin. Let me know if any additional info would be of use.

Thanks Tom for the detailed post. Yesterday Sirius got rid of hash
keys as part of the login scheme, which I used to use to determine if
a login/token has expired. Maybe your cached login info is causing
Sirius to get an internal server error. Try this (no guarantees):

Shut down SlimServer.
Open up slimserver.pref in your favorite text editor.
Search for sirius
Remove the lines for cookie, token, and tokenTime.
Save file.
Restart server.
Try plugin again.

Lemme know if it solves the problem for ya. It's only a guess, but I'm
not sure what else could be causing this (other than you not having
Playboy enabled).

I'd like to see: -

 Playlists per device
Improvements in list management (drag drop would be nice if it can
be implemented cross-platform)
Speed improvements in the web interface (6.5 seems to be slower
here)
Consistent use of tags for displaying song / album information,
perhaps a configured fallback of using less favoured methods if the
better method isn't available.
Option to use FLAC over MP3 if same track name in same folder
(perhaps configurable filetype preferences)

Cheers,

[slim] Re: Duplicate Albums

2006-09-27 Thread mdw

Thank you for this thread on compilations. I have followed the
procedure and it works for me as well. One consequence of this that I
had not anticipated was that tracks for artists in the Various Artists
folder do not appear now under Browse Artists unless I go to Various
Artists under Browse Artists. And even in that case, the listing is by
album, not artist. So, I can no longer go to Browse Artist and browse
all songs in my collection by Artist. Is there a server setting that I
can change that will allow all tracks to show up under each Artist when
in Browse Artists?

[slim] Track progress not updating in 6.5

2006-09-27 Thread GrahameP

Hi,

Sorry to say I've got a further issue. When playing tracks the
progress bar on the player (SB2 or SoftSqueeze 3) will not always keep
track with the playback progress - last night I played an album and
once track 1 reached about 95% the display stayed static (progress and
track details) for the rest of the album. The VU bars did update
though. Win2003 SP1.

Cheers,
Grahame.

It will play for a little while until it runs down the buffer. But if
it kept playing for longer than that, the server was still running.
Closing the web ui window does not stop the server. If you're running
Windows, check the system tray for the slimserver icon.

Getting back to your original question, it sounds like when you
installed 6.3.1 you selected the option to start slimserver when the
computer started. And it sounds like when you installed 6.5 you did not
select this option, hence the need for manual starting of the server. If
that is indeed the case, you can change it to start automatically via
Control Panel Administrative Tools Services SlimServer
Properties Startup Type Automatic (assuming Win XP).

[slim] Re: Rescan Clears Player Playlist

2006-09-27 Thread aubuti

Exactly. And the main reason that tag changes are often only picked up
with a 'clear and rescan' is because a lot of people have their tagging
software set not to update the timestamp of the file when editing tags.
If the timestamp isn't since the last rescan, slimserver assumes the
file hasn't changed, even though it has. Change the setting in the
tagging software and the new and changed option should do the trick
in most cases.

[slim] No Connection. Squeezbox. Netgear DG834N.

2006-09-27 Thread emkai

I just bought a brand new squeezebox yesterday.

Got it connected to my SSID (eventually - had to set security (WEP) to
Open not Auto).

It will not connect to SlimServer nor SqueezeNetwork. I have specified
the IP of the Apple Mac SlimServer is installed on (also added port
settings into the OSX Firewall - as per instructions). I have entered
the t'internet gateway settings manually as per my router too. It just
states there's an error as it cannot connect to either.

If the box correctly states it is connected to the network, however it
won't connect to either of the above, would i be right in saying that
there must be some settings in my router which are stopping it
connecting any further?

On another note, the squeezebox does not appear in the Attached
Devices list. Is this normal?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Hate to say this, but I'm glad it's not just happening to me. I noticed
this a while back and opened up a bug (4071). The good lads at slim

the last week or so.

The tags don't seem to present a problem on any other mp3 player, only
slimserver. So, instead of trying one of the fixes to change any tag
data I'd rather slimserver sort the problem out.

A good deal of my library cannot be easily accessed.

add new items when old ones finish is checked

[slim] Re: No Connection. Squeezbox. Netgear DG834N.

2006-09-27 Thread kevin

It sounds as if your SB has not actually connected to the network, but
thinks it has. This happened sometimes with older firmware versions of
the SB2/3. If possible, I'd recommend connecting via wired ethernet and
connecting to your SlimServer to perform a firmware upgrade, and then
try connecting wirelessly again.

If the unit in question was purchased from a reseller (especially
overseas) the likelihood of this solving the problem is very, very
high. This is mostly due to the fact that overseas distribution
channels are inherently 'laggy' for lack of a better word, and the
firmware on your Squeezebox may be out of date.

But as others have said, only the clear library/rescan option will
cause this behavior. And with the new scanning process, clearing the

The current firmware version for SB2/3 is 64 and there have been quite
a number of bug fixes since firmware 48... I don't know off the top of
my head whether any of them relate to your DG834N, but in any case, this
would definitely be the first thing to address.

Regarding the signal strength, the actual value of the signal strength
doesn't really matter that much in most cases, but if it's bouncing
around wildly that usually means you are experiencing RFI (possibly
from 2.4GHz cordless phones, microwave ovens, or overlapping wireless
networks). If this is the case, please see this guide:
http://faq.slimdevices.com/index.php?action=artikelcat=2id=91

Oh, one other thing. Under view current settings, make sure that the
MAC address shown there matches the one printed on the label on the
bottom of the unit. If it doesn't, you can press the right arrow on
the remote to change it back to the factory assigned number.

[slim] Does softsqueeze work any better in 6.5.1?

2006-09-27 Thread ulvi

Is the version of softsqueeze bundled in slimserver 6.5.1
still 2.8 or a newer version (version 3)?

Does it work better with 6.5.1? Specifically, the two
annoying problems I have with softsqueeze 2.8 in slimserver
6.3.1 are:

When softsqueeze is on (and synched with
my squeezebox 3), occasionally play stops altogether
when a track is skipped.

The fast forward and rewind buttons on the
softsqueeze don't work at all (the display shows
2X, 4X, 8X, .. etc, but play continues at normal
speed).

If any of these are fixed it will make it worthwhile
for me to upgrade.

Thanks

I don't *know* how the SB does the downsampling, but it would surprise
me if it wasn't done the obvious way. That is, to downsample 24/96 to
24/48, all you have to do is throw away every other sample. You're not
changing the word length, so no dithering is needed, and since the
sample rate is reduced by a factor of two, no fancy DSP is required.

[slim] 6.5 Ubuntu Install Woes

2006-09-27 Thread hirsp1

Installed 6.5 on my Kubuntu box, after upgrade from 6.3. Slimserver
starts just fine. However, it won't rescan (or if it does, the rescan
does nothing). I can browse the music folders, but rescanning will not
repopulate the database.

Any suggestions?

 Thanks.

Is this possible from any skin? I just went to Default and Fishbone to
see how they are doing it, and I don't see any hooks for adding

Right now I do not have the MySQL service running on ClarkConnect. It
is installed, but set to manual startup. Do I need to have MySQL
running on ClarkConnect, or does 6.5 install its own version of MySQL
 and start it?

As already stated by stinkingpig its easiest to use the built in
version (which is v5). The version that ClarkConnect installs is
v4.1.12 which is getting on a bit. One odd thing to watch for is in
the 'Running Services' page on the ClarkConnect web interface - if you
have the official CC MySQL installed, but not running, when you start
Slimserver you'll see that the CC MySQL is showing as running even
though it is not.

Out of curiosity I have tried 4.1.12 with Slimserver 6.5.0 (following
the instructions in the wiki) and it appeared to work fine, but as the
Slimserver Database is the only one on the server it seems easier to
stick to the bundled version.

You can read the MAC address from the back of the Squeezebox and enter
it manually into the allowed devices table on the Netgear admin pages.
I did this for my Squeezebox and a PSP when I was only allowing certain
devices to connect. I've since changed to a BT Home Hub to get higher
download speeds, so that's all from memory.

[slim] Analogue VU and Replaygain

2006-09-27 Thread Browny

A question for the experts:

My collection of Flac files have Replaygain tags attached. My
squeezebox is set to use the 'Smart' setting for volume since I use my
squeezebox mainly on random play (the volume changes drive me nuts).

Generally I'm a happy bunny with all of this, except

I also love the Analogue VU screensaver, but since all my Replaygain
metadata is set to bring the volume to -7db or so I end up with the
needles using only a 3rd of the scale - it reminds me of when you used
to get cassettes that had not used all the dynamic range on the tape -
I just find this irritating!!

I've lived with it for a while, but today I've been using the
Transporter skin on the new version of softsqueeze and notice that
despite having 'smart' replaygain selected, the VU meters in the right
hand screen were displaying the track with volume levels before
replaygain is applied.

Is there any way to get this the same on my Squeezebox?

Cheers,

Browny

[slim] SlimServer won't start

2006-09-27 Thread arcticblue

I had SlimServer 6.5.0 up and running perfectly, when I saw that 6.5.1
were released. After the upgrade my SlimServer didn't want to start.

I'm using Win2003 and when opening 'Services' and trying to manually
start the SlimServer, I end up with a message telling me that
SlimServer itself stopped running (due to that there wasn't anything to
do)? Please see attached snapshot for details.

Anyone have a clue as of why this happens, and even more importantly;
what to do about it.

I have tried the following (and nothing seems to get the SlimServer up
and running);
* Uninstalled 6.5.1 and removed everything
* Re-installed 6.5.0 (since it worked before)
* Re-installed 6.5.1 (clean install)
* I have installed with the default settings
* I have disconnected all SQ-boxes

Any hints are highly appreciated...

Some questions:

- Does Slimserver show as an installed application in the 'Add/Remove
Programs' option in the Control Panel when you think you've uninstalled
it.

- What is left in C:\Program Files\Slimdevices (or is this
Slimserver).

It sounds like you may need to do a manual clean-up to get a clean
install to take place

Re: [slim] Re: Questions about new 24/96 support

2006-09-27 Thread T

I don't *know* how the SB does the downsampling, but it would surprise
me if it wasn't done the obvious way. That is, to downsample 24/96 to
24/48, all you have to do is throw away every other sample. You're not
changing the word length, so no dithering is needed, and since the
sample rate is reduced by a factor of two, no fancy DSP is required.

That's the simple way, but not the correct way.

The correct way is first to filter it for the new Nyquist before thowing
away the samples.

I also have the DG834N and find that the SB is not happy if the wireless
mode is set to anything but 'g b'.
The SB will connect for a few seconds then drop, then connect, drop
etc. etc.

Try changing the mode to 'lowest' values.

I'm sure it is a problem with the router rather than the SB :)

I have one specific album which has both ID3v1 and v2 tags, sync'd which
causes the following (following a complete rescan):

The album title shows up under Browse/Albums, but the album isn't found

I probably have many more mp3s with problems, but this one is clearly
messed up. Is there a log file I should investigate following a scan?
What is it called (under Windows)?

Andy,

settings...I get this message see below...
Looks like I'll have to go back to 6.50 until a fix is made.
Thanks.

Windows cannot find 'SlimServer web Interface.url. Make sure you
typed the name correctly and then try again

Thank you. It turns out that I had the incorrect file permissions on my

In looking at your error log, it did crap out when getting the info for

this lately with the plugin. Do you have Playboy radio enabled on your
account with Sirius (has to be manually activated)?

You might want to try the plugin again to see if the same thing

Still having the same problem today with version 6.4. Yes playboy is
enabled, I will see if there is a way to disable it and try again.

[slim] [Announce] MusicInfoSCR 2.99

2006-09-27 Thread Michael Herger
I'm happy to announce MusicInfoSCR 2.99 with great new features - thanks
to Triode.

MusicInfoSCR is a flexible screensaver which lets you display a lot of
different information about the currently playing music. New with 2.99
there's an alternative volume display (SB2/3 Tx only) and a configurable
Now Playing playlist mode. Transporter users can customize what is
displayed on the second display while you browse the player's menus as
well.

Other changes include:
- new tags PLAYTIME_PROGRESS, SONGTIME, DATE et al.
- moved settings out of the plugins to its their own page
- improved icon handling (use font files)

Please not that MusicInfoSCR as of 2.99 is no longer compatible with
SlimServer version 6.5. Previous versions of MusicInfoSCR will be
removed.

Find screenshots and further information on my site:
  http://www.herger.net/MusicInfoSCR

Oh, one more thing: 2.99 3.0. Consider this a beta version. There's a
lot of new stuff and potential bugs. Any feedback is welcome.

Have fun!

2006-09-27 Thread eschurr

I'm having similar issues with the Fishbone interface in 6.5.

when i click on the song's name in the now playing list, i get songinfo
and (usually) the album art.

however, in the thumbnail next to the song, album, and artist name in
the now playing area (top right hand part of browser) i get a blank
thumbnail with a question mark. That's pretty annoying -- i'd rather
see not see a thumbnail at all than one with a question mark.

[slim] battery-powered speakers

2006-09-27 Thread grimholtz

Hi,

I've successfully made a battery pack for my SqueezeBox. Now I can take
it outside (still in wifi range) where there is no power. However, I'm
looking for small, battery-powered active speakers and am literally
overwhelmed with the choices. Most of them are geared towards the iPod
community, which is fine, but I don't know what to choose!

Anyone have advice?

Thanks,
grimholtz
p.s. since I don't have an iPod, I don't necessarily need portable
speakers that have a space for mounting an iPod. Most of the portable
speakers for iPod seem to have an audio-in option.

I picked up a Tivoli Pal http://www.tivoliaudio.com/home.php?cat=266
and have been quite happy with it. It won't overwhelm you with
volume or bass but has a nice balanced sound. it comes with an
excellent tuner and an aux input. The best part is the built in
battery and 15 some hours per charge.

I'm more curious as to how you made the battery pack. If you do it

 they? I couldn't find the

mrfantasy Wrote:
I'm more curious as to how you made the battery pack.
Right now I'm using 'this wet battery'
I think it's intended for a moped or scooter or something because it's
small and lightweight. Don't know how long it will last, but the DC
power supply output on the SB3 is rated 5V @ 2A (i.e., 10 watts). The
wet battery is 6V, 12ampHours (i.e., will provide 1amp for 12 hours @
6V), so theoretically I think it should last about 6 hours if there
really is a 2 amp draw from the SqueezeBox3. I have an auto battery
charger to charge it. The nice thing is the size:

 LENGTH: 5.95 in
 WIDTH:1.97 in
 HEIGHT: 3.70 in

and only 4 pounds! However, I'm thinking of trying a small UPS instead.
That way I don't need a car battery charger. I think 'this'
is the smallest one made by APC, and it's way bigger and heavier (and
has more power, of course) than what I have now. What do you think?
