look in the docs for the input modes. They are generic input types

code for a BAR ui, inputting a text value, choosing an item from a
list, etc.

I see. Is there a way to tell what is the current input mode?

Slim::Button::Common::mode($client) if you are using code.
otherwise, look at the d_ui logs.

And the logs are confusing, for example I see the following.
Why does it say repeat_toggle is not defined then it executes it?

probably a case of an overly verbose debug flag or not showing the full
information.
The ir routine does search for the current mode ir map, but then will
fall back to what is found in the [common] section
the repeat function works because it is there. if you trace the
messages through the Slim/Hardware/IR.pm,

you should be able to see that path.

[slim] Re: 6.5 Scanner crash No Errors

2006-11-12 Thread kirsch

Thanks Fish... I tried editing all of the MP3 Tags and scanner.exe still
crashed...

However, I took it a step further and found where it was crashing..

In my library I had a file called "stream.M3U"..
As soon as I deleted this file I had no more problems. My guess is that
something within scanner.exe was picking up this file and trying to do
something with it. Possibly it thought an M3U file should be included
in the library and it was looking for a tag of some type.

Anyway, maybe this will help someone debug the pearl that is causing
this problem.

You don't have to settle for a system that requires you to force
Composer, Work Name, Artist and Movement name into the standard Album,
Artist and Track Title tags.

I participated in two extended message threads about tagging for
classical music with Ceejay that led to his bugzilla requests for
better support of classical music(#2696-2701.) Since Slimserver just
didn't have what I needed then, I turned to ripping my CDs and hoped
that SS might improve by the time I finished ripping.

I have now ripped and tagged my entire collection of classical and
non-classical using the J. River Media Center 11 program. I have the
tags I want - Composer, Album, Work name, Artist, Genre, Sub-genre and
Version (to separate different remasterings) and a few more. That
program has a first-rate UI and has browse, search and sort facilities
that really work for classical music. It is easy to keep all movements
together and the program provides gapless playback for Flac files. I'm
spoiled and I'm not giving anything up. It doesn't provide a solution
for playing music in a room separate from you PC but it does provide
the interface I need. I recommend that program for ripping, tagging
and playing classical music.

There are 3 plugins discussed in this forum's 3rd party plugins section
that might help in using Slimserver and Squeezeboxes. Erland's Custom
Scan and Browse plugins provide for using more tags in Slimserver. And
Craig has announced a plug-in for the J. River player that can feed its
audio output to Slimserver. Using the J. River interface to play
through a Squeezebox might be a good solution.

Good luck finding a solution rather than settling for a kludge.

Bill

2006-11-12 Thread miked

I'm having a similar problem. If I start SoftSqueeze and do something
that requires wmadec.exe (i.e., like XM Radio plug-in), wmadec.exe
starts OK with no problems. If I switch to something else within SS
before exiting that doesn't require wmadec.exe (like play an MP3),
wmadec.exe is properly stopped.

BUT -- if I exit SoftSqueeze while wmadec.exe is still running,
wmadec.exe never goes away on the server, and slowly increases memory
usage indefinitely until I manually kill it. I killed it last time
when it was using 80 megabytes of memory, for instance.

I upgraded to the newest version of wmadec.exe, but no dice -- still
have the same problem.

Is there any possible fix to this issue?

[slim] Confused about remote mapping

2006-11-12 Thread Bill Moseley
http://localhost:9000/html/docs/buttons.html left me with a lot of
questions.

Ok, so the .ir files map a remote's buttons to the IR code.
So if I have a "power" button on the remote I might enter
the .ir file:

power= a25d48b7

Then in a .map file I might map that key to turn my SBII on or off:

power= power_toggle

What I don't understand is how the server knows which .map file
goes with which .ir file. I assume that when the IR code a25d48b7
is generated that the server looks for the first "power" in any of
the .map files.

Or should I prefix with the name of the remote. I have a Bose
programmable remote, so:

bose_power   = a25d48b7

Then in the map file

bose_power  = power_toggle

The reason that makes sense is the Bose remote control can be
programmed to act like a number of different remotes, so I might have
multiple .ir files. So, when the remote is programmed to act as a
Toshiba DVD remote I would have this .ir file:

bose_toshiba_dvd_1503.ir

"power" seems like an obvious example. But, say I have a record "rec"
button that I'd like to make use of -- say to toggle the brightness.
So, which do I use:

# in .ir file
rec = a25d5da2

# in .map file
rec = brightness_toggle

Or would I do this?

# in .ir file
brightness = a25d5da2

# in .map file
brightness = brightness_toggle

Finally, is there a list of all the functions I can use in the .map
file listed someplace?

And from the docs, I really don't understand where [INPUT.Text]

Well, I'm not sure why I never got much of a log listing via the HTML
interface, but I read through the wiki on running the scanner from the
command prompt (I sure am learning stuff), set just about every flag I
could think of and saved the log to a file. The scan crashed again, I
noted the MP3 it had stopped scanning at, and moved it out of my music
directory, and ... viola...SUCCESS! The scan ran to completion, and
now I have album art (for those I have it for). It would be nice to
have gotten some kind of error message when the scanner crashed but I
feel happy now that it finally suceeded.

2006-11-12 Thread Brian Ritchie

Since upgrading to 6.5.0 and then 6.5.1 I've had similar problems on
occasion. My normal fix is that when the SB fails to connect on the
first attempt, I:

- turn it on again
- let it get past "Waking up SlimServer..."
- when it gets to "Connecting to SlimServer..."
- press the left arrow on the remote
- SB now says "Connect to at ?"
- press the right arrow
- SB now connects properly
- but usually goes into standby
- one more push of the red button turns it on

I've never had this not work (so far - touch Formica).

I've not managed to work out why this happens sometimes but not others.
It's not (solely) related to the order in which we turn on the boxes.

[slim] Slimserver 6.5.1 plays no FLAC ?

2006-11-12 Thread Meganerd

Found out my slimserver is not playing FLAC anymore.
Silence all the way. Playing ape (after a hack in convert.conf), mp3
etc.works just fine.
Playing FLAC on my Softsqueeze works fine as well. Found out that
SoftSQ does eat native FLAC, no conversion on slimserver being done

that means digging into convert.conf..

FLAC is the only format with a $BEGIN$ and $END$ tag. In the flac.exe
command line options you're able to give a start and cut-off point for
your decoded file. (Partial decoding of a file)

Slimserver sends a begin of 0 and an end of -0

duration of flac file is detected by slimserver. Erasing the
"--skip=$START$ --until=$END$ " part does not help, still no stream to
my squeezebox.

When i paste the command executed by slimserver (eehh, displayed in the

I admit I don't have that many versions, but my plan is to
differentiate them through the title. So I could have...

Le sacre du printemps (Pierre Boulez- New York Philharmonic)

And

Le sacre du printemps (Leonard Bernstein - London Symphony Orchestra)

Well, that's the plan for now. I'm still noodling with tagging...

As for the other kinds of things you want to, I think you could do it
all using the comment tag and dynamic playlists.

I discovered what was causing the problem. The problem, again, was
that songs were showing up two or three times when I would open or play
an album. The culprit: I had cyclical (redundant) shortcuts to certain
music folders.

Since I can only specify one folder for Slimserver to scan, I plugged
shortcuts into that folder, directing the server to other folders.
What I failed to realize is that I had duplicate shortcuts, leading to
the same folder. With previous versions of Slimserver, this wasn't an
issue - it knew that the shortcuts pointed to the same file, and
included the file only once in the database. With 6.5, it counts the
file with each scan.

Long story short: if your playlists show the same file multiple times,
I recommend checking your shortcuts.

[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-11-12 Thread Mister-E

6.5 is "in the bag"??!?!?! Yeah, right, the TRASH bag. I've got a
suggestion for v7: Make it WORK!!

Man, I'm so sick of Slim Devices releasing software and firmware that
completely nukes a system that was working fine. 6.5.0 certainly
should have never been released, period. And from what I gather, the
6.5.1 daily builds are still pretty flakey. But I wouldn't know,
because I'm tired of wasting my time being an unpaid bug-finder for
Slim Devices.

I may never upgrade from 6.3.1. I have no desire for slower, buggier,
more bloated software on my system.

[slim] 6.5.0 Will Not Start

2006-11-12 Thread kerry_nyc

I had 6.5 working fine on another computer, but moved to a new computer
and installed the GA release 6.5 on Windows XP Pro, however, the
slimtray and slim.exe will not start. It just blinks in the tray and
never starts. So far I have:
1) in/uninstalled and restarted 4 times
2) copied my old slim folder over and tried that

I followed one of the links that mentions setting it up as a services
from a dos prompt, but I get an error that says PERL failed.

Is there a way to manually add this as a service? Is that necessary,
because I don't recall doing that on the last install on the old
computer.

Any help is appreciated.

It's not a question of "sacrificing" ARTIST. Artist, IMHO, should be
used for the one main piece of information about a piece of music that
tells you who its by. For non-classical that's the performer. For
classical its the composer.

So don't be shy or purist, set both ARTIST and COMPOSER for classical
music, and make use of the CONDUCTOR, BAND and PERFORMER tags as well.
For non-classical just let ARTIST be the performer and thats probably
all you need.

To keep different versions of the same piece apart, I do put the extra
info in the ALBUM tag too (eg "Symphony 1 in C Minor, Op 11 - Karajan -
Berlin Phil").

While I quite agree about the need for better search and browse (which
is why I wrote the bugs!) I really wouldn't let this current limitation
stop you using the system, it really does work very well if you're
prepared to put a little effort into the tagging in the first place.

Got that idea as well. And what happened won't help. Maybe if more
people asked?

> When it comes to classical, I use the artist tag for the composer.

While this might work if you only have a single version of each piece,
I do have around 12 versions of some pieces. I do have a lot of organ
music you see. And there you can have a single piece by different
artists on different organs. And it all is interesting and used
information. It would be great if I could search the index and see on
what organs artist X played piece Y. So there goes the comment tag as
well.

Really, I even wish for a "verzeichnis" tag. Like BWV, KV, WQ etc. And
I would not refuse "scale" and "Op" tags either. All usefull if looking
for music that would go together.

Problem is I have about 50/50 clasical and other music. So sacrifising
the artist for composer isn't an option either as that would introduce
as many problems at the other side.

When it comes to classical, I use the artist tag for the composer. And
the performers are in the title of the piece. For example,

Le sacre du printemps (Pierre Boulez- New York Philharmonic)

And, depending on the cases, I put the title either in the song title
tag or in the album tag.

Btw, you could probably also use the comment tag.

2006-11-12 Thread ceejay

Hi

you may wish to visit bugzilla and vote for
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2698 and its companion
enhancement requests. Don't hold your breath, though, they have been
there nearly a year and despite being among the most voted-for bugs
there does not seem to be much movement (nothing promised for 7.0, for
example).

For linking the parts of a piece together, you might want to review the
recommendations at
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?BeginnersGuideToClassical - this
is quite do-able.

Note that you can use Composer for display purposes quite happily -
MusicInfoScr, for example, will make use of it.

Also that erland's excellent plugins (see the plugins forum) do offer
some limited CustomBrowse functionality in this area. You can even use
his CustomScan plugin to get extra tags in to play - I've just done
this with "PERFORMER".

So - its not as good as it could be, but it is manageable.

[slim] Composer tag?

2006-11-12 Thread Havoc

Why is there no beter use of the composer tag?

I want to put all my cd's on slimserver, but this is holding me back.
You cannot search on the composer tag (or at least not combined with
artist since a composer tag equals an artist tag), there is no entry
for composers (like there is for artists, albums etc).

For anyone with more than a few cd's of classical music, this makes the
system harder to use than it should. And for clasical music, this system
makes a lot of sense.

Not being able to "automagicaly" link the different movements of a work
together is another issue, but first things first.

2006-11-12 Thread anonymouse

I am new to this board so forgive me if this is a duplicate request. I
tried searching for it but I could not find it.

What I would REALLY like to see is a new visualization. If you use
Winamp visualizations you may have seen one called the sexy scrolling
voice print. It has time on the x-axis and frequency on the y-axis and
it scrolls. It has 5 or 6 different intensity levels which represent
the amplitude of a particular frequency at a given moment in time. It
looks really cool.

I was thinking since the SB has a grayscale display maybe someone could
implement it. I would really like to see it and make my firends envy it
that much more.

[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-11-12 Thread Scallywagfr78

Hello,
I run a large music base of mostly classical music in MP3. I would like
to be able to display any combination of info/tags on the "Albums" page
in Slimserver e.g. Composer - Album Title - Album artist. At present,
if I want to knows who's symphony is shown performed by whom I have to
enter all the info under the Album Title and possibly repeat it in
other tags. What's the use then to have multiple tags in MP3?
One way out could be (I am not a developer) to develop the
possibilities now given by the dropdown on the Album page by showing
the info (artist genre album year) not only using it to determine the
order of display. After all, I can determine quite nicely the info to
appear on the SB.
Or am I missing something here?
Incidentally, after lots of problems with 6.5.0 things seem to be
running nicely with 6.5.1.
Thanks

Unfortunately the Pronto and Harmony models are completely out in this
department. The Nevo is WiFi and as far as I recall should support
uPnP. In addition you can look at the *'Philips RC9800i'
(http://www.homecontrol.philips.com/)* which provides a tablet layout
closer to the unit for Sonos.

When I finally get my SB I think I'd like something like this as well.
I've been looking at the Nokia 770 but haven't done enough research into
user-experiences. But I suspect it can't be any faster than using the
770 skin through a standard browser on my PowerBook, which is a mixed
bag.

The SONOS definitely has a slick hand-held remote with a slick
interface on top of a solid piece of hardware. Unfortunately that's
where it ends for that device. I wasn't going to settle for a device
where I didn't have a unit that could stay in a fixed location with its
own display.

Marying the two conceps seems like a natural fit and I'm sure it's
something we'll see explored by Logitech in the future. In the meantime
I can't offer a concrete solution. If the SONOS units were using
standard WiFi perhaps they'd be hackable to work with Slimserver. I
recal they use their own network though, don't they?

Hi,

Apparently theres lots of people out there with large collections
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23701&highlight=size+collection)
that would take along time to listen to (end ot end)
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25759.

What I was wondering is how large are the collections of rated songs. I
know not everyone rates their tracks, but for those that do, how many
tracks have you actually rated with one star or above? I suspect many
large collections are ripped from CD but never listended or rated.

In my case I have 9200 tracks, of which 5703 are rated, but all
listened.

Softsqueeze is a software emulation of squeezebox which runs on your
PC. You can access from your Slimserver web interface
(http://localhost:9000/default/), help, softsqueeze. Follow the
instructions to install and run.

Having read your other thread, and not wanting to miss the obvious, it
is not clear whether slimserver is running properly on your PC. To
check, launch Windows Task Manager and check that slim.exe and
mysqld.exe are listed under the processes tab. It sometimes takes
quite a time for the slimserver web interface to respond when started
(up to 2-3 mins).

Hi TimothyB,

Since 6.5.1 you don't need to modify GENRE or add REM YEAR (instead of
REM DATE) anymore. Quotes are optional and only needed if GENRE is more
than one word. I logged a bug fix on this and it was promptly fixed. -
