It's compiled when you start the program. There's no reason a Perl program can't be lightning fast. I have Perl programs processing thousands of users at a very high speed, it's all in the coding, of course. I have the feeling slimserver could be optimized to make certain operations that cause the slowness perception (like recursively adding a directory to a playlist) much faster. The web interface is responsible for a lot of the perceived slowness. I think it should be complemented with a slick GUI app that reacts instantaneously. This affects .mp3 files. Wouldn't it be strange if it turned out that .mp3 file use gets essentially sued out of existence for commercial use? Of course, it would still be used by people like us, as long as there are free software players to play it, and old mp3 player hardware around to play them, but new, tiny portable players that play mp3 might disappear. What does that leave us with? Apple's proprietary DRM'd formats, Windows proprietary DRM'd formats, etc. It will be the best thing that ever happened to M$ (and apple) if mp3 gets killed in the courts. If anyone wants to listen to recorded music, they'll have to buy a player from M$ or apple, and they'll have to buy all their music from M$ and apple, too. [slim] One more reason to use FLAC?
Quote from today's Guardian (UK) newspaper: "Microsoft was yesterday fined a record $1.52bn (£777m) for infringing a digital music patent which could throw into doubt the future of the digital music industry. A San Diego court ruled that the software giant has infringed patents, owned by Franco-American technology firm Alcatel-Lucent, which cover the conversion of audio tracks into the popular MP3 file format which is used by hundreds of companies and millions of music listeners." I'm sure that M$ will somehow manage to get out of this but it just goes to emphasise that even mp3, which most people would assume is a freely usable format, is in fact not. Makes truly free codec schemes like FLAC seem even more crucial to have around. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33020 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] slimserver memory usage
Hi -- I'm running SlimServer 6.5.1 on a Fedora Core 6 box (512Mb RAM, Pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz.) SlimServer finds all of my music and streams it just fine to 3 Squeezeboxen, but slimserver.pl uses an increasing amount of memory the longer it runs. When I start it up, top shows it to be using about 12.5% of memory. Right now top shows slimserver.pl has been running just under 3 and a half hours and it's using 38.8% of memory. I first noticed the problem when we weren't able to play any music at all. Web access to the SS interface was very, very slow -- I ssh'ed into the box and saw that slimeserver was using virtually all the memory. I restarted SS and it dropped back down to 12.5%. One other time I noticed that SS was not running and the logs indicated that the system had killed the slimserver process because it was using all the memory. I'm dealing with the problem now with a cron job that restarts the slimserver service twice a day, but that's rather less than elegant. When I first noticed this I tried running slimserver without any plugins, and the problem persisted. Perhaps it's relevant that this is a recent FC-6 install following a reformat of the drive. This 6.5.1 is the only version of slimserver that's been on this system installation, and it was a fresh install. The server is not used for much else -- a file server for occasional backups and a print server for occasional print jobs. And I've not generated a music scan in weeks. I don't know which debugging settings might be relevant here -- could someone here suggest some settings that might reveal what's going on? Thanks. --John ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Is Slimserver sustainable as Open Source?
Going back to the first message in this thread (and others similar to it), I think the root issue underlying whatever frustration users/customers are feeling is not really open vs. closed source. Rather, it generally comes down to performance (i.e., perceived lack of) and/or bugs (usually real, rarely imagined). As many have mentioned, better development processes/control (incl. regression testing, etc.) would help address the latter. The former is more difficult, and perhaps a large portion of performance issues come down to the code base. There may be certain operations that PERL, PHP, etc., may never be able to perform as efficiently as C dialects or other compiled programming languages. I have no idea what's towards the top of Logitech/Slim's priority list, but I'm wondering whether they aren't stepping back to take a look at the whole server package, and figuring out whether some parts of it shouldn't be modularized and then written using a code base that will address sluggishness and other performance symptoms. Of course this wouldn't be easy, but it would probably make it easier to release a server-in-a-box product (if that's what they have in mind) that would not get savaged by reviewers testing with large and/or complex media libraries. -- Balthazar_B Balthazar_B's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7366 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32904 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] WPA WEP etc...
Being pretty much an idiot when it comes to networking stuff, please clarify something for me: As I understand it, encrypting your wireless broadcasts (hopefully) prevents an eavesdropper from reading the packets you send out into the atmosphere. Protecting the integrity of your network, and the machines on it, is another matter entirely. Am I wrong in that assumption? And if all your broadcasting is music packets, is it that big of a deal to protect them? -- jonheal Jon Heal says: Have a nice day! http://www.theheals.org/ ~~~ SB3 (wired - 6.3.1) | Home-brew PC running XP Pro | DENON DRA-395 | PSB Stratus Bronze (2) | Outlaw Audio LFM-2 (1) | DIY Speaker Cables | Dayton Audio Interconnects jonheal's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2133 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32888 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Using a short password or one from a dictionary is just as big a problem with AES as with TKIP. Re: [slim] Firmware version
The firmware and Slimserver software are pretty independent of each other, but there have been times in the past where a FW upgrade depended on a certain version of the Server software being present. e.g I think FW54 or later requires SS6.5x. Slim recommends that users upgrade Server software and FW together as they are tested as a unit. It would involve too much work to test server upgrades for compatibility with several older FW version. Similarly, Slim don't go back and update 6.2 or 6.3 to work with the current FW as well as the version bundled with the release. So if you upgrade to 6.5 the FW will automatically bee updated. If you go back to 6.2 or 6.3 you'll be prompted to downgrade. You can edit the squeezebox2.version file in C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Firmware to avoid a downgrade, but you won't get any support if your system breaks. -- oreillymj oreillymj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=699 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32989 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
