Perl is a compiled language. It's compiled when you start the program.
There's no reason a Perl program can't be lightning fast. I have Perl
programs processing thousands of users at a very high speed, it's all in
the coding, of course. I have the feeling slimserver could be optimized
to make certain operations that cause the slowness perception (like
recursively adding a directory to a playlist) much faster. The web
interface is responsible for a lot of the perceived slowness. I think it
should be complemented with a slick GUI app that reacts instantaneously.

AFAIK only encoders are forced to pay a license fee, players (decoders)
are apparently left alone. Apparently that's the reason binaries of LAME
are somewhat hard to come by.

It's not in the interest of the patent holder to kill the format. This
type of thing has been going on for a long time and mp3 is still very
much alive.

However, if MP3 "goes away," there is always Ogg Vorbis which is, per
the FAQ at www.vorbis.com, "completely free, open, and unpatented."

Compressed audio isn't going to go away. I wish Ogg were the
ubiquitious format MP3 has become since it free and open, alas.

The MP3 format is not open, it is subject to intellectual property.
Both Thompson and Franhauffer claim patent rights to the underlying
technology. It is not subject to DRM, but it is not free.

Many people ignore the license terms, but that does not make it right.

Re: [slim] One more reason to use FLAC?

2007-02-22 Thread tyler_durden

This affects .mp3 files. Wouldn't it be strange if it turned out that
.mp3 file use gets essentially sued out of existence for commercial
use? Of course, it would still be used by people like us, as long as
there are free software players to play it, and old mp3 player hardware
around to play them, but new, tiny portable players that play mp3 might
disappear.

What does that leave us with? Apple's proprietary DRM'd formats,
Windows proprietary DRM'd formats, etc.

It will be the best thing that ever happened to M$ (and apple) if mp3
gets killed in the courts.

If anyone wants to listen to recorded music, they'll have to buy a
player from M$ or apple, and they'll have to buy all their music from
M$ and apple, too.

[slim] One more reason to use FLAC?

2007-02-22 Thread davep

Quote from today's Guardian (UK) newspaper:
"Microsoft was yesterday fined a record $1.52bn (£777m) for
infringing a digital music patent which could throw into doubt the
future of the digital music industry.

A San Diego court ruled that the software giant has infringed patents,
owned by Franco-American technology firm Alcatel-Lucent, which cover
the conversion of audio tracks into the popular MP3 file format which
is used by hundreds of companies and millions of music listeners."

I'm sure that M$ will somehow manage to get out of this but it just
goes to emphasise that even mp3, which most people would assume is a
freely usable format, is in fact not. Makes truly free codec schemes
like FLAC seem even more crucial to have around.

Try the 'Repeat' key on the remote. This cycles between one, all and

[slim] slimserver memory usage

2007-02-22 Thread John Rakestraw
Hi --

I'm running SlimServer 6.5.1 on a Fedora Core 6 box (512Mb RAM, Pentium
4 CPU 2.66GHz.) SlimServer finds all of my music and streams it just
fine to 3 Squeezeboxen, but slimserver.pl uses an increasing amount of
memory the longer it runs. When I start it up, top shows it to be using
about 12.5% of memory. Right now top shows slimserver.pl has been
running just under 3 and a half hours and it's using 38.8% of memory. I
first noticed the problem when we weren't able to play any music at
all. Web access to the SS interface was very, very slow -- I ssh'ed
into the box and saw that slimeserver was using virtually all the
memory. I restarted SS and it dropped back down to 12.5%. One other
time I noticed that SS was not running and the logs indicated that the
system had killed the slimserver process because it was using all the
memory.

I'm dealing with the problem now with a cron job that restarts the
slimserver service twice a day, but that's rather less than elegant.

When I first noticed this I tried running slimserver without any
plugins, and the problem persisted.

Perhaps it's relevant that this is a recent FC-6 install following a
reformat of the drive. This 6.5.1 is the only version of slimserver
that's been on this system installation, and it was a fresh install.

The server is not used for much else -- a file server for occasional
backups and a print server for occasional print jobs. And I've not
generated a music scan in weeks.

I don't know which debugging settings might be relevant here -- could
someone here suggest some settings that might reveal what's going on?

Thanks.

[slim] SB3 Died?

2007-02-22 Thread bahnsah

SB3 (about 1 year old), via wireless, windows xp, has been working fine,
but tonight (of course just before a get-together with guests), it will
not turn on at all.

No response from the remote, and yes, I tried changing the batteries
and holding the power button down as well.

Slimserver starts on the PC and says it cannot find a player. Works
with softsqueeze.

Any thoughts, or did it really die? :-(

[slim] Discount Wall Mount for SqueezeBox

2007-02-22 Thread Bokenrosie

Hey Guys,

I thought I would post another, low-tech, inexpensive wall mount
options that scored great WAPs (wife approval points) with the spouse.

This is a cheap 12" wall shelf that I picked up at Linens & Things for
$20. I used existing holes from a phone jack location that was no
longer used. I am running 10' patch cord down to closet below this
wall in basement and DC plug is running to extension cord that is
basement below this wall.

Sorry for the crappy picture but the size limits made me compress a
lot.

Cheers,

I have the MM icons.

>From memory I had to rescan/restart a few times. Plus, you need to
start MM first, and make sure it's not analyising before you start
Slim. Suggest you try setting use MM first in Slim, and clear the music
folder location in the server settings to nothing. Then don't worry
about getting it to work this time, just close Slim, close MM, and
restart your PC. When it boots again, start MM, let it settle down,
then start Slim. Go to server settings and do a clear library and
rescan everything. Then don't touch it until it's finished.

You have to be a little persistent I recall. It should be easier, but
it's not.

Possibly, but the chances are rather small. I read an article on the
exact way of cracking a WEP protected network recently and the 'bad
guys' have devised a little trick to get lots of packets. They just grab
one of your encrypted packets and (re)send it to one of your hosts. The
host will receive the packet and reply to it, another packet to
analyze... The method used in the article required two PC's, a special
Linux boot CD and two wireless cards with a specific chipset. Quite a
hassle still..

>

It's a funny thing wireless security. If you leave your PC/network open
to the internet you *will* be targeted by thousands or tens of thousands
of (professional) automated hacking attempts. If you leave your wireless
network open you will be open to attack by a dozen neighbours. The
chances of your neighbours wanting to target you and having the skill to
do are possibly not so great. One of my neighbours has his network open,
I even used it briefly once or twice, but I've never gone so far as
snooping around on it. The chances of anyone around me wanting to go
through the hassle of cracking a WEP key would be fairly slim.

Then again I read an interesting attack recently in which the bad guys
would drive thru the city with a PC that automatically looked for open
networks with no encryption. The PC would be loaded with knowledge of
popular routers and their configs and default passwords and would
contact any routers it could find and change the DNS settings so it
would use a DNS server controlled by the attacker. By manipulating DNS
responses they would be able to get between the victim and there banking
websites.

I'd take the trouble to set up WPA encryption if I were my neighbour. I
don't know which one it is, perhaps I should snoop around a little ;)

I have MIP 1.7 working with SS 6.5.1 on Win XP. Though I can't say it
was easy. I don't run the headless mode, but this is what I had to do
to get it working:

Select "Use Music Magic"
Clear the Music Folder path in Slim (when it was set it caused havoc
with library info, even though it pointed to the same location as MIP)
Don't start Slim at startup
Manually start MIP first on boot
Manually start Slim once MIP has stopped scanning for new stuff
If the library has changed since last time (or if it's your first
time), do a clear library and rescan everything

That worked for me anyway. If MIP starts scanning new stuff while it's
running with Slim though, all bets are off.

Thx.

I vaguely remember having a problem when I upgraded. As MusicIP is a
new process name I think I had the old one set up to run in the the
MMM.ini file or something like that. Double check your ini file
settings and Service settings. I fixed the problem quite easily.
Sorry my recollection is so vague.

I think that is a statement that can easily lead to long hours of debate.

This is starting to sound like yet another excuse to be condescending

"open source" also gains the perception that only untrained hacks take
part.

Then again, maybe I've just been imagining the increasing QA team.

I'm no more than a novice at this myself, but yes, this is something
outside a normal LAN. If your machines are infected with various
backdoors, it doesn't matter how secure your WPA2 passphrase
is...although interestingly an attacker could still not find it out
unless he was running a keylogger as you typed it in.

But in regards to just broadcasting music packets and packets destined
for an SB, you need to protect them even more because:

- there will always be traffic an attacker could monitor

- when broadcasting music, a steady stream of packets will be present
to analyze

As I understand it, these attacks work better when you have lots of
packets to analyze. Once an attacker derives a passphrase, he can (at
the very least) use your IP address for whatever purpose he wants.
This includes child porn - there have been several high-profile busts
recently where police are tracking offenders based on IP addresses, and
you would have to prove your wireless network was compromised in
court...meanwhile your name would be published in the local media.

Once an attacker is on your LAN, he's also one step closer to accessing
your hard drive contents. Your router won't stop him, it'll be up to
software firewalls if he gets that far. Blocking by MAC address is
useless here - he'll be able to see the MAC addresses of all the
devices on your network and can clone one.

Re: [slim] Is Slimserver sustainable as Open Source?

2007-02-22 Thread Balthazar_B

Going back to the first message in this thread (and others similar to
it), I think the root issue underlying whatever frustration
users/customers are feeling is not really open vs. closed source.
Rather, it generally comes down to performance (i.e., perceived lack
of) and/or bugs (usually real, rarely imagined). As many have
mentioned, better development processes/control (incl. regression
testing, etc.) would help address the latter. The former is more
difficult, and perhaps a large portion of performance issues come down
to the code base. There may be certain operations that PERL, PHP,
etc., may never be able to perform as efficiently as C dialects or
other compiled programming languages.

I have no idea what's towards the top of Logitech/Slim's priority list,
but I'm wondering whether they aren't stepping back to take a look at
the whole server package, and figuring out whether some parts of it
shouldn't be modularized and then written using a code base that will
address sluggishness and other performance symptoms. Of course this
wouldn't be easy, but it would probably make it easier to release a
server-in-a-box product (if that's what they have in mind) that would
not get savaged by reviewers testing with large and/or complex media
libraries.

clarify something for me:

As I understand it, encrypting your wireless broadcasts (hopefully)
prevents an eavesdropper from reading the packets you send out into the

The main risk at the moment is using brute force to crack the keys.
Using a short password or one from a dictionary is just as big a problem
with AES as with TKIP.

That's also the attack against WEP, except that in this case some
stupidities in the protocol implementation make it a lot easier.
But it's not very difficult to make an insecure implementation of AES
encryption.

With SaverSwitcher, you could use both of them. Set the 1st
SaverSwitcher "when playing" saver to MusicInfo for 10 seconds and the
2nd to Analog VU for something like 10 minutes and, after an initial 10
seconds of MusicInfo, you'll only see the VU, until the next song
starts, or you press "0" on the remote to go back to MusicInfo for 10
seconds, or "1" on the remote to only use MusicInfo.

Re: [slim] Firmware version

2007-02-22 Thread oreillymj

The firmware and Slimserver software are pretty independent of each
other, but there have been times in the past where a FW upgrade
depended on a certain version of the Server software being present.

e.g I think FW54 or later requires SS6.5x.

Slim recommends that users upgrade Server software and FW together as
they are tested as a unit. It would involve too much work to test
server upgrades for compatibility with several older FW version.
Similarly, Slim don't go back and update 6.2 or 6.3 to work with the
current FW as well as the version bundled with the release.

So if you upgrade to 6.5 the FW will automatically bee updated.
If you go back to 6.2 or 6.3 you'll be prompted to downgrade.

You can edit the squeezebox2.version file in C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Firmware to avoid a downgrade, but you won't
get any support if your system breaks.

[slim] Firmware version

2007-02-22 Thread jotap_66

Hello:

I have just bought a SB3When I configured, it was installed a new
firmware version (I think 48)...I read that there are new versions of
firmware...My question is if the firmware version depends on the
slimserver version...For example, I am using 6.2.2 but I read that last
version is 6.5.1...If I install 6.5.1, SB3 will update to a new version
of firmware? What happens if later I downgrade the slimserver...to
6.2.2?

Thanks

JP

The problem is also that is must work both on player display and in the
web interface.

However, as I have understand it should be possible for a plugin to
provide its own fonts/characters and this way it might possible to do
something in TrackStat to show real stars instead of asterix
characters. I'll add it to the TrackStat wish list as something to
investigate sometime in the future.

Actually, this is more akin to bug 4384. Please vote on this bug--I
haven't gotten the developers to really look into it eventhough I
reported it fairly early on with 6.5.1. It is an easy bug to reproduce,
and there is detailed explanation in the bug tracker, so I'm not sure
why they haven't paid much attention to it.

How does the info differ? Maybe that would give a clue.

It is an MP3.

Cheers for that one. Gave the tag editor a try. It made some changes to
the tag info, but its still different from what everything else sees.
And it still cuts off :(

Re: [slim] Sluggish Response

2007-02-22 Thread jezbo

Where's the health page?

Anyway, I tried it and slimserver running on the PC is definitely more
responsive than running on the NAS. This is no real problem for me
since I want to control my music FROM a pc (via CLI hooked into my own
program eventually) rather than from the remote with no pc on.
