Re: [slim] Networking question

2007-04-06 Thread JJZolx

All I can say is that you're gaining nothing in terms of security with
that configuration. For increased security and peace of mind you'd be
better off putting a good firewall between the network and the router.
Then create firewall rules saying (for instance) that the NAS at
192.168.1.5 and the NAS at 192.168.1.6 are blocked from making outgoing
connections. Incoming is already blocked, but go ahead and make a
couple of explicit rules just to feel better.

This would be identical to your current situation - you cut off any
possibility of either outgoing or incoming connections to/from those
machines. But IMO that's a little bit over the top, since those
machines probably never even make any outgoing connections.

 the .168.x network.

 JJZolx Wrote:

Why two wireless access points? The SB3s do 802.11g, so they shouldn't
negatively affect throughput of the wireless network, and the 54GB+/-

devices maxed out simultaneously shouldn't be starved for bandwidth.

Agreed, however, so long as I want to keep the two subnets apart I'm
guessing there is no other way?

Your main security risk, as I see it, is that one of your PC's (laptop)
becomes infected by a Trojan. If that happens, both subnets are exposed
anyway. Your router/firewall is highly unlikely to be compromised itself
unless you've misconfigured it. PC's exp. when running Internet Explorer
or even any other browser or mail client are the modern hacker's
favorite attack target.

That and your own lack of network understanding. It's probably
impossible for a non expert to build a really secure network with
different subnets, waps and firewalls. And really, no attacker is going
to be interested in your family's videos or pictures (you have backupped
them on DVD?) unless you're some kind of royal. In that case you should
have staff to handle this kind of thing ;)

However, the display info is not very pretty! My SB3 only displays the

I don't know how these different types of streaming media presents

it something that needs a bit of work on my SS to make it work

[slim] iTunes Intergration Problem

2007-04-06 Thread Moko

I've only had my squeezebox a couple of days now but I already love its
easy use setup but I have a couple of questions for you experts out
there.

I have the following setup a Squeezebox SB3 connected wireless to
Windows Laptop which runs Slimserver 6.5.1, Buffalo Linkstation Live
NAS server which stores all my files connected by ethernet cable to a
Netgear Router.

The iTunes on the laptop can connect to server through the shared
option (LS-GL Linkstation) but I cannnot move anything to Playlists, or
edit tracks in anyway. When I rip a CD using iTunes it seems to put the
files only on the laptop not the server even though in settings the
libary should be at L:\iTunes music (where L is the server)

On the slimserver side the path is set as \\Hs-dhglc5a\share\iTunes
Music but I cannot figure how to put this setting into iTunes on the
laptop. Does anyone know how to solve this get iTunes on the laptop
working properly?

Also the album artwork on the slimserver seems to have disappeared (it
used to show when libary was stored on laptop) but if you open an album
file the artwork is there, how do I get it to display when I am
browsing?

Thanks for any advice

2007-04-06 Thread Pale Blue Ego

There are reports that the Harmony 1000 is very clunky and laden with
problems. The newest firmware actually removes some functionality
because they haven't figured out how to implement it properly. Lots of
complaints by users of this remote.

I've had the Harmony 880 for a few years, and it's okay. The hard
buttons often require several presses and sometimes the whole thing
locks up. The original charging station was a bad design that has been
fixed (at no cost to customers).

Lots of people don't like the web-based wizard-style setup system, but
believe me, it's better than all the fiddling and programming required
to properly set up a Pronto remote (though the Pronto does work better
and is higher-quality).

Bottom line, we still don't have a good universal that works well and
that the family can use with little instruction.

Maybe the guys from Slim can create a SB-oriented remote that also does
the universal thing well. Here's hoping.

No, it is, according to the poster, guaranteed to lose every cent it
spends on acquisitions, which is exactly how most large companies
expand. In this case, he believes the value of a SB will reach zero
just because of the acquisition.

Not that this isn't just another unsupported generalization, but there
are certainly plenty of historical examples of companies (and even
national economies) who survive quite a long time while producing
nothing but crap. I tend to blame noncompetitive markets, monopolies,
protectionism and racketeering for these examples, while he seems to
blame this mass market appeal thingie. It's all theoretical at some
level. I doubt any theory has enough predictive value to tell us what
the Logitech purchase will or will not accomplish.

Well, I would worry if Sean said, Oh by the way, we arent going to be
reachable for a couple weeks as the new overlords insist we move to
Switzerland to better meld into the corporate culture.

I don't see that, though, and it is hard to force people into a culture
when they are thousands of miles away.

I only blame screw the niche market, if it doesn't sell a million
units, it isnt worth the time attitude for compromising quality. The
Logitech family of products, though, is huge. Certainly they have
plenty of million-selling-keyboards-and-mice, but they also have items
that sell at much lower rates, so their business strategy seems to be
something in every part of the spectrum instead of just low end mass
merchandise stuff.

(though I spill coke and coffee on my keyboard enough to -want- a cheap
$10 keyboard, some people are less messy than I am, and seem to like
spending $200 on a premium keyboard... personally I have no idea why
such a thing is useful... but they probably don't get why a SB is
useful.)

If you are not loading huge files across your network the 14Mbps

I think Slimdevices customers (including myself) are used to having a
very direct contact with the owners/developers of the company-this
makes us feel part of the family.

Judging by some of the Logitech forums such intimacy is not really
there (I guess that might have to do with the size of their customer
base and the product offering) and is mostly mediated by moderators,
who, however polite, are in fact extremely irritating Dear so and so,
we are grateful for your suggestions and will pass them on to the
competent people Brrr shivers down my spine).

As long as the Slimdevices community will be allowed to continue
developing its plugins/NAS implementations/techiegeeky discussions
without a politically correct Big brother telling us what to say, how
to say it etc etc etc, then all will be fine (the hardware must of
course be of the quality we expect!). Failing that, I fear it will be
mass migration...

Just a couple of thoughts,

[slim] Screensaver permanently on

2007-04-06 Thread Jeepie

Hi everyone,

Any ideas on this?

I am running

SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 with a
squeezebox.

When I selected an internet radio station one day one of the digital
screen savers suddenly started playing behind the Now Playing text
description screen saver of what was playing; it's the screen saver
which looks like a bar chart. So now I can see the Now Playing screen
+ softly displayed behind these bars jumping up and down. It's like
I've got two screen savers on at the same time. They look great on
separately but togtheruurrgh!

Any ideas how to revert this to just the now playing screen saver?

Stuff I've tried:

System Settings Screen saver. Turning off and changing all
combinations. I can change the screensaver but the bars are still
jumping behind whatever changed screensaver I go to.

Reinstalling

Upgrading the firmware.

Upgrading slim server.

Stop and starting and bouncing.

Frowning in an intimidating way at the squeezebox

Any ideas much appreciated. Don't worry about stating the obvious!

Cheers

Jeepie

Re: [slim] Nokia N800

2007-04-06 Thread timmorris

Has anyone noticed an issue with a memory leak with the N800 and the
N770 skin? I'm using a nightly and seem to be getting a massive
increase in memory usage (as reported by top) I *think* it is only
happening when I use the skin to control an mp3 stream which is played
back on the N800 itself.

Running nightly 2007-03-14. Minor modification to convert the drop-down
box to display only.

Re: [slim] OSX desktop audio to Slimserver

2007-04-06 Thread peterw

The basic idea for MacOS is to use SoundFlower to make your normal Mac
output available as a source for Nicecast/Icecast, and tell your
Squeezebox to tune in the Nicecast/Icecast URL.

The forums should give you more suggestions.

I've got a Mac, but it sees little use I haven't tried setting this
up on it. Closest I've come is configuring DarkIce and Icecast on Linux
to make my stereo's Line Out available as an MP3 stream in my house by
patching it to the computer's Line In jack.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33086

I don't know what software you'd use on Windows to do something like
SoundFlower, but it should be the same idea -- install a streaming
server like Icecast/Shoutcast, and install some software like
SoundFlower to feed Icecast/Shoutcast.

Re: [slim] Nokia N800

2007-04-06 Thread bklaas

That sounds like a problem with the media streamer, not with the
Nokia770 skin or the browser. Stream to the N800, close your browser
(your stream should continue to play via the audio player), and see if
the memory spike is still there. If so, the issue has nothing to do
with the Nokia770 skin, but with the N800's streaming audio player.

cheers,

Re: [slim] Playing music with no computer turned on

2007-04-06 Thread gsalton

Holds your music and tv shows. Will not be big enough to hold all of
them, but there is a way to prioritize. Only need the computer on when
you want something that's not on the hard drive of the apple tv
itself.

Downsides include that you will need to have it hooked up to a TV to
operate it. But then, you can also watch shows/movies as long as
they're ripped to a compatible format.

Won't be quite as flexible as some other options, but will be plug and
play.

Of course, it's a computer too - just a quiet one that doesn't look
like it (in the same way NAS's are computers).

[slim] Help! Internet based screensavers broken

2007-04-06 Thread Chippy

I'm driving myself nuts trying to fix this one. Perhaps someone can
help...

I'm using a Mac Mini as my Slimserver (6.5.1) with a couple of SB3s.
Previously, the Mac was connected to my wireless router and the SB3s
were running wirelessly.

Circumstances have now dictated that I will have to run my Mac
wirelessly for the next few weeks - I know that this is not ideal - but
everything seems to be working fine, except for any Internet based
screensaver: RSS ticker and SuperDateTime being examples.

I can use SqueezeNetwork from both SB3s just fine. Nothing has changed
on the SB3s. Obviously, the Mac is now using it's Airport card - but
the Mac is able to see the Internet without problem.

I'm stuck. Any ideas?

[slim] Remote ideas: HTC?

2007-04-06 Thread Balthazar_B

There are a couple of HTC devices that may be interesting as Slim
remotes:

HTC Shift:
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/laptops/htc-shift-is-the-umpc-for-umpc-haters-246965.php

HTC Advantage:
http://www.seehtc.com/

Of course, they can also be used as cellphones, web browsers, UMPC-like
things, and for other mundane tasks :).

Main problem is that they're pretty damn expensive. I'd happily buy a
Logitech 2-way remote capable of controlling a Slim system that's all
tucked away in a closet (i.e., completely out of sight).

[slim] Tearing my hair out with audio problem

2007-04-06 Thread justlen

Slimp3 (2.3) and Slimserver 6.5.1. Slimp3 is connected to the LAN via a
bridged Airport Express. I've had this setup for over a year.

Starting two nights ago streamed music (Folk Alley) starting corrupted.
Almost as if the MP3 data was corrupt. I would get what sounds like
bubbles of the music, with random squeals and pops and the ocassional
loud POP.

I tested with MP3s from the local SlimServer with the same results.

I tested the connection by plugging a laptop into the AEX and tested
the connection at my rated cable speed of 6M. I also ran the Apple
wireless utilities and saw excellent signal strength and very low
interference.

Is it possible I actually have developed a hardware problem? Any
ideas?

Regards;

Len

Re: [slim] bridge DHCP problems

I am using an SB3 as a bridge to my girlfriend's PC. Both the SB3 and her
PC are using DHCP. I have seen no problems with it. I'm happy to provide
additional details on our setup, if desired.

On 4/4/07, pza [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Does anyone else have DHCP working in conjunction with the

squeezebox nor the machine connected into the ethernet port get
assigned IP addresses. If I set their IPs statically the network
connectivity via the bridge is fine to the rest of the network. If the
bridge is turned off, then the squeezebox gets an IP via DHCP without
any problems.

I've turned the bridge on and off several times to check that it wasn't
just a one off problem.

I'm happily working now with static IPs and the bridge enabled, but
would prefer DHCP.
