Disable repeating. There's a repeat button on the remote which will cycle

Re: [slim] Problem after installing 6.5.3

2007-07-21 Thread Thierry

I have a similar problem after installing SlimServer 6.5.3 under Windows
XP SP2. It is installed as a service and the firewall has grands
SlimServer full access. The service starts, but then immediately stops
without doing anything. The former versions of SlimServer(6.5.1 and
6.5.2) worked just fine.

You will need to set the backup file setting in the TrackStat section
of "Server Setttings/Plugins" to:
trackstat_scheduled_backup_20070721.xml
Instead of just:
trackstat_scheduled_backup_20070721

The .xml extension at the end is important.

If it was disabled, I think I would try to shutdown SlimServer and then
remove the whole "Cache/MySQL" directory within the slimserver

I'm not sure I agree with "anything audio". Altho "Selling my MegaDollar
turntable because I love my SqueezeBox" would be OK with me.

I had not considered "anything computer or network related" since that
is too broad, IMHO. I sure don't want to see old laptops, or generic
obsolete desktop PCs. Its a gray area. Which is bad.

For example, to me, it would be OK to sell a "used P3 desktop setup with
SlimServer" but not a plain "used P3 desktop"

I'd want it more restricted than Jim suggests, it has to be SqueezeBox
or Transporter related. Which would allow "Benchmark (or Larvy) DAC,
replaced it with a Transporter, wonderful with a SqueezeBox".

"Linear powersupply for SB" would be fine with me. $2000 interconnects
is marginal. "PC audio speakers, list for $10, $2 OBO" may get an award
for chutzpah, but the listing is just wasted bandwidth.

Its such a slippery slope. Perhaps this will end up being unworkable.

>From a community standpoint, I think it's a good idea. It wouldn't harm
sales in any way... If someone wants to sell a Squeezebox, they're going
to sell it somehow. The forum would just make it convenient to
community members.

You'd need some fairly clear rules and there would be some inevitable
moderation, including the locking and deletion of threads. I would
hope that's OK with everyone and doesn't raise the censorship debate
once again. But the forum won't be for discussion, so it should be
fine.

I would suggest permitting the sale of anything audio, as well as
pretty much anything computer & networking related. Again, as a
convenience (service?) to community members. Want to sell a wireless
router that someone else could use? Perfect place for it.

I would also suggest that users _not_ be permitted to post links to
eBay auctions or to listings on other for-sales sites such as Audiogon.
Require a full item description and a clearly stated price (with or
without OBO) for all items appearing in listings.

I'm looking to do the same thing for exactly the same reason. Sounds

Almost. A crossover cable looks externally exactly like a standard
ethernet cable, but internally the transmit wire on one end connects to
the receive end on the other. Or maybe it is the transmit connects to
the transmit. Its been a while since I made on.

Normally you connect a PC/Mac/thing to a wire that goes to a
hub/switch/router. You take another thing/PC/Mac, connect it with a wire
to the same hub/switch/router. The first thing yacks out to the hub,
which relays it back to the second. And vice versa.

With a crossover cable, you skip the hub, but you need a different
internal wiring.

Which is why in the earlier post I mentioned pulling my hair out when I
get them confused.

You need a $100 tester (or talent and a continuity tester and a steady
hand) to tell them apart.

I'm sure you'll get some.
I can answer about Windoze and Linux, but can't spell Mac. :-)
And of course not many people have serious technical chops about Macs
since they just work. (tm).

The basics of the networking are the same, but the menus, gui, etc. will
be different

Yes, you should be able to talk WiFi to the internet and wired to your
Mac. You just need to turn on two connections. Windows and Linux have
some sort of "network configuration" panel where you have to turn them on.

With a direct wire (crossover) or thru a hub, you will have to assign
fixed TCP/IP addresses to both your Mac's ethernet jack and to the
SqueezeBox. Just pick something like 172.16.1.2 for the Mac, and
172.16.1.10 for the SqueezeBox. Netmasks, etc are not important.

Be careful, while you won't hurt anything, if you use a crossover cable
when you are talking to a hub, or use a straight wire as a crossover, it
will make lights blink but nothing will work. You won't be able to tell
why, and you will pull your hair out. That is why all of my crossover
cables are bright orange and have big labels on them.

I assume you're connecting ethernet between the Book and SB3 with the
Book being the server?

Yes - this is exactly what I was thinking.

Is a crossover cable the same as a 'standard' ethernet cable, like the
cable I would use to connect my router to my computer? I had not heard
the term crossover before looking into this.

What other system info would be helpful...I'm on a MacBook (Intel Core
2 Duo; 2GB; 667 MHz) w/ OS X v10.4.10. I have an Airport Extreme
router. We have a broadband wireless ISP (we're in a rural setting).

My network + SB interface worked great until our ISP went down earlier
this week. Since coming back online, I haven't been able to listen to
my music -- it's all choppy. This is why I'm looking at the direct SB
- MacBook connection.

Cheers.

Agreed!! I have wireless to my bedroom SB3 but do have an awesome

The Transporter in the living room is wired, however. I often stream
AC3 or DTS encoded WAVs with a bitrate of almost 2.5mbps!! The

Great way to isolate problems.

WiFi as the "last leg" works fairly well, in most cases. This assume you
have something like:
   1) PC with SlimServer hard wired to WiFi router
   2) WiFi router talks to SqueezeBox.

It is fairly common for folks to have problems, especially with WAV,
AIFF or lossless WMA, if the setup looks like

   A) PC with SlimServer WiFi to WiFi router
   B) WiFi router talks to SqueezeBox.

This requires two hops for every data packet of sound, and it can stress
the network.

a it seems lot of companies just don't know how to design a decent
remote control that can be used by touch alone and not sight. The SB3

with any imagination. For example, it's hard to feel the difference
between the square and circular buttons at the bottom given they are so
similar.

The SKY+ remote control is an example of a great remote control, I have
no problems using this in bed:

Now no artwork at all, except for if I drill down to albums, so I
disable antivirus not to interfere with mysql and did a clean rescan.

Also tried restoring from my latest TrackStat backup but it shows no

Glad to hear that you are working.
Wireless, when it works is great. But for reliable networking, you need
wires. Streaming media makes tiny and minor errors be much more
noticable. Things that a laptop reading email or surfing the web will
kill audio streams. Video streams are even more finiky.

I have a wireless SqueezeBox in the library for casual listening, but my
main stereo has CAT5 to a spot behind my amp. The SB did, and the
Transporter is, a lot happier.

This is a dangerous assumption. The SqueezeBox is a client. It can not
control application software on your Mac. The SlimServer has to be
running first. (aside: it is very bad practice to let an external thing
(computer, device, etc.) execute an application on a computer. This is
how the worst of security problem occur)

I see no evidence to isolate whether it is a SqueezeBox, network, or
Slimserver problem.

Something has changed. You need to isolate the problem so you can find
the cause. But you seem to be sure, so I'll step out of the way.

After Transporter Upgrade, I'm selling my SB3 -

Excellent condition, complete with UK 3-pin standard power-pack,
cables, instructions and in original box.

Am selling on UK ebay, but will post worldwide.

the idea was to simply serve up a working skin to a non working IE,
rather than an obvious and slower js redirect
from one skin to another.

however, as nokia can't make up their mindsjs could be one option.
"tablet browser" and "arm" should be more reliable things to look for I
expect.
otherwise, looking for the full and exact IE7 and IE6 strings, allowing
anything else to block the redirect may do nicely too.

I've experienced the same "acting up" on my 20" Intel iMac, running the
latest everything. I've noticed that when Internet Radio connections
just stop, or music streamed from the computer restarts for no reason,
etc., I can clear things up by stopping and re-starting the SlimServer
service on the computer. Clearly something is not right in the code.
The Squeezebox should be more reliable than this.

Re: [slim] choppy music via slimserver

2007-07-21 Thread Triode

It does look like the issue is with your network, but I assume the
server and player are both at your home. In which case although the
wireless router may be provided by your ISP it is just the wireless
network in your home which has a problem.

I suspect your ISP will consider this your issue to resolve.
Try wiring both the server and player to the router directly - does it
go away. If so what happens if you change the wireless channel on the
router.

There's no reason to have a music streaming device to be 802.11n
compatible. It simply doesn't need the bandwidth and having an 802.11g
device on the network will not slow the whole network down like an
802.11b device on a 802.11g network (I think).

The only thing you can benefit from is MIMO, but that technology is in
the router and it's available for 802.11g as well.

And in regards to wired/wireless, you can't beat good ol' copper...if
you can hardwire it, you should. You'll never have to worry about a
new hacking vulnerability, you'll never have to worry about
interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens, and you'll never
have to worry that your neighbour will install a more powerful wireless
AP which will blow your signal away. Plus wireless routers usually
come with 4 wired ports, so you can still use other wireless devices.

In regards to routers, my Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware has been
rock-solid with 1 SB2, 1 Transporter and one wireless laptop, plus
another wired PC and a network-wired printer. Get the "WRT54GL" if you
want the equivalent, not a current WRT54G.

Re: [slim] 6.5.3 - library scanner problems

2007-07-21 Thread fezco

I can't live without my SqB so I resorted back. I would like
to see this problem resolved with future versions. I submitted an email
to support AT slim

Anyway

OS: Windows XP-sp2

Types of files: 1500 WMA-lossless albums, approximately 21,000 tracks.
Ripped using non-drm CD-DA from www.poikosoft.com

Files are on a 500GB USB2.0 hard drive.

I have performed a clean install of 6.5.3 manually removing beforehand
the slimdevices

folder.

After the initial library discovery, only 40% of the tracks on the
drive were listed by the

slimserver. Many of the albums only had a couple tracks listed.

If I ‘scan for new or changed music’ it finds more tracks only a few
hundred at a time so

the list keeps growing. I prefer not to keep hitting ‘find new or
changedÂ’ dozens of times though.

I do not think this is a file format problem because they worked with
6.3.1 before and the

fact that scanning for new files finds more songs.

Re: [slim] choppy music via slimserver

2007-07-21 Thread steelhead

It's dropping off -- bouncing all over.

Based on this test, I'm thinking the issue is with our wifi ISP. As
previously mentioned, I had not had sustained issues before we lost
service earlier this week; issues began after we went back online.

At times, signal strength would drop off, but we would only experience
choppiness a few times per week, at max...and it was never a sustaining
issue. Typically, I could hit pause and and then re-start and issue
would be over with.

Does it make sense that the issue might very well be with the ISP?

Recommendations on next steps?

The 100% counter is going up, but the others ones arn't. If you reset

the network is ok, if not then there is a problem with the network.

You can look at the player display while the test is running - is the

Ha! That explains it.

Yes, if you're running SlimServer via Perl then you can edit
Slim/Web/HTTP.pm to change the check for "Maemo". See
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5093 for the three patches
to see where to make the change. If you're not, then you'll have to

jobs, that had nothing to do with SlimServer, where overloading the
server computer at the time.

I have also had a similar problem when my laptop overloaded the
wireless network due to some indexing services, which by accident had
been configured to also index network disks. The result was that I got
choppy sound on the SqueezeBox since it was connected to the same
wireless access point as the laptop.

Re: [slim] Upgrading from WiFi to Wired Ethernet

2007-07-21 Thread Mark Lanctot

Press and hold left for 5 seconds or unplug/replug the power. Go to
Networking Setup and choose Wired. That's all there is to it.

If you see wireless signal strength you're still connected via
wireless, and 50% is low enough to cause playback/connectivity
problems.

No, you're not crazy... I posted here last night but then found the

Re: [slim] choppy music via slimserver

2007-07-21 Thread bflatmajor

First, I'm not an expert in networking wireless or wired, but I do work
with network engineers, so I have resources that I talk to.

I used to experience the same issue as you and it's been resolved for
over a year now. So here are some of the things I did;

Updated wireless router's firmware

Changed the configuration on my wireless card to use 'G' mode.
Ensured that everything on my network was running in 'G' mode.

Changed the routers configuration to process specifically in 'G' mode
not 802.11b not 802.11c not 802.11d not 802.11e and not in mix mode.
You get the picture. :-)

Changed the threshold and mtu setting in the router, this has to do
with packet size.
It sounds like you are dropping packets.

And purchased and installed a router extender antenna.

With all the above changes, I get excellent wireless signal in my home
of approximately 4000sf.

Squeezebox suffers no dropouts or stuttering. Laptop internet access is
excellent even when outside.

Those are the things that I've done that have improve my overall
network wireless signal.

router= linksys wrt54gs
SB = SB2

various computers running all in 'G' mode not mixed..

Hope something that I've mentioned helps you.

I'm not sure either, it was Robin who asked. I'm just pointing out that
you answered a different question. Sometimes software, applications and
operating system interact in weird and mysterious ways.

I know that many problems with Windows users running SlimServer and
accessing network drives are controlled by whether it is run as a
"service" or as a program. Its the same program on the same box with the
same OS, but it runs differently.

This is how you access slimserver. Not how you start the slimserver
process. There are many ways to start the slimserver server software,
and usually there are several ways on each OS.

I don' speak Mac, but Windows uses can start it manually, in their
startup group, as a service, etc.

How does it start?

Re: [slim] Flash shockwave Internet Radio

2007-07-21 Thread bpa

For many the StreamTheWorld services (e.g. CBS) there are alternative
lower quality MP3 streams available.

The advantage of Slimserver over something like a reciva or other
vendor box, is that Slimserver can do some protocol processing to get
stream running. This has happened with XM and Sirius. So if somebody
was motivated, I'm pretty sure some of the Flash based streams could be
make to work.

Thanks, Robin, for the reply. Here are some answers

1. How are you starting slimserver?
via browser and also tried from Squeezebox.

2. What model of SB you are using?
v3

3. Are you connecting wired or wirelessly?
wireless...have connected my SB directly too my router where signal is
100%. Same problem.

4. Are you using static IP or DHCP?
DHCP.

Maybe something happened to degrade your wireless connection recently?

Are internet did go down, but this has happened before. Have not
encountered any other problems w/ MAP.

Sounds like a wireless issue, i.e. not enough bandwidth to stream

Yes, it does. The bottom line is that most stations want you on their
website, seeing their ads, and some go to great lengths to ensure this.
Flash-based players, StreamTheWorld protocol, ClearChannel protocol,
geographic blocking, rotating URLs and URL obfuscation are all examples
of this.

Unfortunately the US-based independents are on life support.

I personally hardly ever do this, but the main issue is finding the
right URL. Once you have that, it'll also depend if the stream is
supported.

There are tools to help you find the right URL:

No one has any clue when the SB4 will come out.
Or, no one who talks knows, and no one who knows is talking.

Contrary to what the router vendors claim, the N standard is not going
to be a standard for at least a year, probably two. If you want real
info on the process and timetable, go to the IEEE site.
After all it is the IEEE 802.11n standard.

It is also possible (likely depending on where you live) that a neighbor
added a wireless box and it is causing congestion.

My daughter moved into an apartment building and had a choice of 11 WiFi
access points.

Re: [slim] My squeezebox is STILL acting up.

2007-07-21 Thread bpa

You may have more than one issues, so I think it is best to deal with
one issue at a time. First - check out the possibility of the CPU
spike.

In the ProcessExplorer display with the CPU graph. The graph shows CPU
load - I think the problem would show as a sustained high value probably
a longish rounded curve rather than a short spike. If you just move the
cursor *without clicking* to the curve at its peak - text should appear
giving some info about the process. For example, if it is slimserver
then you will see some numbers and SLIM.EXE in the middle, if it was
the scanner the name SCANNER.EXE will be in the text.

What is the name of the file associated with your CPU load peak ? Copy
all the text if you are not sure.

Separately, you could use your SB with Squeezenetwork for a good period
of time (e.g. a few hours) - if you experience no problems, then your PC
is probably the source. If you experience some problems on
Squeezenetwork then something in your network probably has a fault.

[slim] choppy music via slimserver

2007-07-21 Thread steelhead

I have a new problem with my Squeezebox: all of a sudden, all music
played over slimserver is choppy, I cannot listen to any tracks. I've
had my Squeezebox for just over a month and it had been working fine.

I get a clear signal with Squeezenetwork.

I'm on Mac (Intel) OS X v10.4.10

Slimserver v6.5.2

Thanks for any advice on how to get m listening to my music again with
my Squeezebox,

Phil

The timeouts and restarts are very intermittent and only occur about
once every hour or so. Could that be a connection or router issue? On
the other hand I can't locate an application that is kicking in and
tying up the CPU. I can't seem to make heads or tails of the info
provided by the "ProcessExplorer" that BPA kindly passed on to me. Sure
it tells me what processes were being used when I click on CPU spikes
but they mean nothing to me...some I recognize and some I don't. I have
no idea how to trouble shoot the one's that I don't.

I acted on the hints that were specific enough to act on ie updated
Quicktime, tried looking into the task manager, tried using the process
explorer etc etc.
My system info is posted about 3 posts back.

*Something* has changed recently with your setup, but you don't know what.

If something in your network has developed a fault (e.g. your router,
network cable, PC network interface) then you could get connection
timeout.

Check your PC network statistics to see if there is an unusual value
for those counters related to network errors such as Retries and
Timeouts.

It is also possible that connection timeout is CPU related if there is
a bad driver or application that is hogging the CPU and preventing
Slimserver responding.

Re: [slim] More problems with Vista

2007-07-21 Thread NigelC

Hi All

I have just run into this as well. I bought a new Vista PC last week.
SS runs fine with the trial McAfee security product. Zonealarm was my
preferred firewall/AV setup under XP, which worked well with SS, so I
installed the latest Vista version, and immediately hit the problem. SS
would'nt start. All the relevant ports and permissions were set up OK,
as they used to be on my XP PC. I removed Zonealarm and all is back to
normal.

Only problem is I now have to learn a new firewall/av product. If
zonealarm wont work, any other suggestions? - at least I know McAfee
works with SS

[slim] More remote codes

2007-07-21 Thread bruce

The Harmony universal remotes let you choose a "Search for Artist"
command for the Squeezebox, yet that command isn't recognized by my
Squeezebox (v3). Any idea whether there is a remote code for "Search
for Artist"? If so, how do I get it? If not, could one be added (as
well as other menu commands, even including specific items in the
Favorites list)? Would this require hardware, firmware, server
software, and/or Harmony code updates?

And... if I actually wanted the remote command to be "Lazy Search for
Artist", would that also require a change to the Lazy Search plugin?
The remote's Search command already does Lazy Search if the plugin is
installed, but I'm not sure that even if the remote could tell the
server to do "Search for Artist", that that would automatically be a
lazy search.

[slim] Transporter - how do I open it?

2007-07-21 Thread Michel Fombellida

Hi,

After 2 SB1 and 2 SB2 I took the plunge and bought a Transporter. I got
it delivered yesterday, I plugged it into the wall and... nothing, no
way to turn it on.

So before sending it back for repair (to make it simple I bought it
abroad during a business trip), I wanted to check inside to see whether
a cable would have got loose during the transport.

The problem is that I don't seem to find out what type of screwdriver I
should use to open it!

I tried hexagonal shape key but size 1.5 appears too small and size 2
is too big, it doesn't seem to be torx either. Any clue?

Regards,
Michel
