Want to sell a wireless > router that someone else could use? Perfect place for it. I'm not sure I agree with "anything audio". Altho "Selling my MegaDollar turntable because I love my SqueezeBox" would be OK with me. I had not considered "anything computer or network related" since that is too broad, IMHO. I sure don't want to see old laptops, or generic obsolete desktop PCs. Its a gray area. Which is bad. For example, to me, it would be OK to sell a "used P3 desktop setup with SlimServer" but not a plain "used P3 desktop" I'd want it more restricted than Jim suggests, it has to be SqueezeBox or Transporter related. Which would allow "Benchmark (or Larvy) DAC, replaced it with a Transporter, wonderful with a SqueezeBox". "Linear powersupply for SB" would be fine with me. $2000 interconnects is marginal. "PC audio speakers, list for $10, $2 OBO" may get an award for chutzpah, but the listing is just wasted bandwidth. Its such a slippery slope. Re: [slim] How about a for sale section
>From a community standpoint, I think it's a good idea. It wouldn't harm sales in any way... If someone wants to sell a Squeezebox, they're going to sell it somehow. The forum would just make it convenient to community members. You'd need some fairly clear rules and there would be some inevitable moderation, including the locking and deletion of threads. I would hope that's OK with everyone and doesn't raise the censorship debate once again. But the forum won't be for discussion, so it should be fine. I would suggest permitting the sale of anything audio, as well as pretty much anything computer & networking related. Again, as a convenience (service?) to community members. Want to sell a wireless router that someone else could use? Perfect place for it. I would also suggest that users _not_ be permitted to post links to eBay auctions or to listings on other for-sales sites such as Audiogon. Re: [slim] Connecting SB directly to MacBook
steelhead wrote: > Is a crossover cable the same as a 'standard' ethernet cable, like the > cable I would use to connect my router to my computer? I had not heard > the term crossover before looking into this. Almost. A crossover cable looks externally exactly like a standard ethernet cable, but internally the transmit wire on one end connects to the receive end on the other. Or maybe it is the transmit connects to the transmit. Its been a while since I made on. Normally you connect a PC/Mac/thing to a wire that goes to a hub/switch/router. You take another thing/PC/Mac, connect it with a wire to the same hub/switch/router. The first thing yacks out to the hub, which relays it back to the second. And vice versa. With a crossover cable, you skip the hub, but you need a different internal wiring. Which is why in the earlier post I mentioned pulling my hair out when I get them confused. You need a $100 tester (or talent and a continuity tester and a steady hand) to tell them apart. -- Pat http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I can answer about Windoze and Linux, but can't spell Mac. :-) And of course not many people have serious technical chops about Macs since they just work. (tm). Yes, you should be able to talk WiFi to the internet and wired to your Mac. You just need to turn on two connections. Windows and Linux have some sort of "network configuration" panel where you have to turn them on. With a direct wire (crossover) or thru a hub, you will have to assign fixed TCP/IP addresses to both your Mac's ethernet jack and to the SqueezeBox. Just pick something like 172.16.1.2 for the Mac, and 172.16.1.10 for the SqueezeBox. Netmasks, etc are not important. Be careful, while you won't hurt anything, if you use a crossover cable when you are talking to a hub, or use a straight wire as a crossover, it will make lights blink but nothing will work. You won't be able to tell why, and you will pull your hair out. That is why all of my crossover cables are bright orange and have big labels on them. -- Pat http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Great way to isolate problems. WiFi as the "last leg" works fairly well, in most cases. This assume you have something like: 1) PC with SlimServer hard wired to WiFi router 2) WiFi router talks to SqueezeBox. It is fairly common for folks to have problems, especially with WAV, AIFF or lossless WMA, if the setup looks like A) PC with SlimServer WiFi to WiFi router B) WiFi router talks to SqueezeBox. This is a dangerous assumption. The SqueezeBox is a client. It can not control application software on your Mac. The SlimServer has to be running first. (aside: it is very bad practice to let an external thing (computer, device, etc.) execute an application on a computer. This is how the worst of security problem occur) I see no evidence to isolate whether it is a SqueezeBox, network, or Slimserver problem. Something has changed. I've experienced the same "acting up" on my 20" Intel iMac, running the latest everything. It does look like the issue is with your network, but I assume the server and player are both at your home. In which case although the wireless router may be provided by your ISP it is just the wireless network in your home which has a problem. I suspect your ISP will consider this your issue to resolve. Try wiring both the server and player to the router directly - does it go away. If so what happens if you change the wireless channel on the router. -- Triode Triode's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36996 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There's no reason to have a music streaming device to be 802.11n compatible. It simply doesn't need the bandwidth and having an 802.11g device on the network will not slow the whole network down like an 802.11b device on a 802.11g network (I think). The only thing you can benefit from is MIMO, but that technology is in the router and it's available for 802.11g as well. And in regards to wired/wireless, you can't beat good ol' copper...if you can hardwire it, you should. You'll never have to worry about a new hacking vulnerability, you'll never have to worry about interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens, and you'll never have to worry that your neighbour will install a more powerful wireless AP which will blow your signal away. Plus wireless routers usually come with 4 wired ports, so you can still use other wireless devices. In regards to routers, my Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware has been rock-solid with 1 SB2, 1 Transporter and one wireless laptop, plus another wired PC and a network-wired printer. Re: [slim] 6.5.3 - library scanner problems
I can't live without my SqB so I resorted back. I would like to see this problem resolved with future versions. I submitted an email to support AT slim Anyway OS: Windows XP-sp2 Types of files: 1500 WMA-lossless albums, approximately 21,000 tracks. Ripped using non-drm CD-DA from www.poikosoft.com Files are on a 500GB USB2.0 hard drive. I have performed a clean install of 6.5.3 manually removing beforehand the slimdevices folder. After the initial library discovery, only 40% of the tracks on the drive were listed by the slimserver. Many of the albums only had a couple tracks listed. If I ‘scan for new or changed music’ it finds more tracks only a few hundred at a time so the list keeps growing. I prefer not to keep hitting ‘find new or changed’ dozens of times though. I do not think this is a file format problem because they worked with 6.3.1 before and the fact that scanning for new files finds more songs. -- fezco fezco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3855 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36970 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It's dropping off -- bouncing all over. Based on this test, I'm thinking the issue is with our wifi ISP. As previously mentioned, I had not had sustained issues before we lost service earlier this week; issues began after we went back online. At times, signal strength would drop off, but we would only experience choppiness a few times per week, at max...and it was never a sustaining issue. Typically, I could hit pause and and then re-start and issue would be over with. Does it make sense that the issue might very well be with the ISP? The 100% counter is going up, but the others ones arn't. If you reset and restart the test does it only show 100%. Choppiness can also be caused by an overloaded computer. Re: [slim] choppy music via slimserver
First, I'm not an expert in networking wireless or wired, but I do work with network engineers, so I have resources that I talk to. I used to experience the same issue as you and it's been resolved for over a year now. So here are some of the things I did; Updated wireless router's firmware Changed the configuration on my wireless card to use 'G' mode. Ensured that everything on my network was running in 'G' mode. Changed the routers configuration to process specifically in 'G' mode not 802.11b not 802.11c not 802.11d not 802.11e and not in mix mode. You get the picture. :-) Changed the threshold and mtu setting in the router, this has to do with packet size. It sounds like you are dropping packets. And purchased and installed a router extender antenna. With all the above changes, I get excellent wireless signal in my home of approximately 4000sf. Squeezebox suffers no dropouts or stuttering. Laptop internet access is excellent even when outside. Those are the things that I've done that have improve my overall network wireless signal. router= linksys wrt54gs SB = SB2 various computers running all in 'G' mode not mixed.. Hope something that I've mentioned helps you. -- bflatmajor bflatmajor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=794 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36996 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

For many the StreamTheWorld services (e.g. CBS) there are alternative lower quality MP3 streams available. The advantage of Slimserver over something like a reciva or other vendor box, is that Slimserver can do some protocol processing to get stream running. This has happened with XM and Sirius. Re: [slim] My squeezebox is STILL acting up.
You may have more than one issues, so I think it is best to deal with one issue at a time. First - check out the possibility of the CPU spike. In the ProcessExplorer display with the CPU graph. The graph shows CPU load - I think the problem would show as a sustained high value probably a longish rounded curve rather than a short spike. If you just move the cursor *without clicking* to the curve at its peak - text should appear giving some info about the process. For example, if it is slimserver then you will see some numbers and SLIM.EXE in the middle, if it was the scanner the name SCANNER.EXE will be in the text. What is the name of the file associated with your CPU load peak ? Copy all the text if you are not sure. Separately, you could use your SB with Squeezenetwork for a good period of time (e.g. a few hours) - if you experience no problems, then your PC is probably the source. If you experience some problems on Squeezenetwork then something in your network probably has a fault. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36953 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You can always connect to the Slimserver mp3 feed from http://:9000/stream.mp3. However, I'm not going to guess at what could be the problem when I don't know anything about your setup and you don't seem to have replied to requests for this information. Re: [slim] Synchronizing with Internet Radio on SB3
Quick search on LAstFM and Sync - shows this thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26986 I think you can sync some internet radio streams if the stream is handled by Slimserver and not directly by Suqeezebox and if you are not using bit rate limiting. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36987 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] My squeezebox is STILL acting up.
If something in your network has developed a fault (e.g. your router, network cable, PC network interface) then you could get connection timeout. Check your PC network statistics to see if there is an unusual value for those counters related to network errors such as Retries and Timeouts. It is also possible that connection timeout is CPU related if there is a bad driver or application that is hogging the CPU and preventing Slimserver responding. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36953 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] More problems with Vista
Hi All I have just run into this as well. I bought a new Vista PC last week. SS runs fine with the trial McAfee security product. Zonealarm was my preferred firewall/AV setup under XP, which worked well with SS, so I installed the latest Vista version, and immediately hit the problem. SS would'nt start. All the relevant ports and permissions were set up OK, as they used to be on my XP PC. I removed Zonealarm and all is back to normal. Only problem is I now have to learn a new firewall/av product. If zonealarm wont work, any other suggestions? - at least I know McAfee works with SS Nigel -- NigelC NigelC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2101 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36612 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] unable to launch slimserver under mac osx
plugins : AlienBBC, LazySearch. all have been installed for a while. Slimserver started crashing down a couple of months ago, but now doesn't even start up. no changes to slimserver; but since I install the the Apple updates as they come, i don't know if one of these messed up slimserver (although I've reinstalled slimserver a couple of times since then to try and solve the problem). Maybe what's messed up is my Perl install, do you know how I can change that ? thanks a lot for trying to help. -- denopa denopa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3385 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36977 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] More remote codes
The Harmony universal remotes let you choose a "Search for Artist" command for the Squeezebox, yet that command isn't recognized by my Squeezebox (v3). Any idea whether there is a remote code for "Search for Artist"? If so, how do I get it? If not, could one be added (as well as other menu commands, even including specific items in the Favorites list)? Would this require hardware, firmware, server software, and/or Harmony code updates? And... if I actually wanted the remote command to be "Lazy Search for Artist", would that also require a change to the Lazy Search plugin? The remote's Search command already does Lazy Search if the plugin is installed, but I'm not sure that even if the remote could tell the server to do "Search for Artist", that that would automatically be a lazy search. -- bruce bruce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36989 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Transporter - how do I open it?
Hi, After 2 SB1 and 2 SB2 I took the plunge and bought a Transporter. I got it delivered yesterday, I plugged it into the wall and... nothing, no way to turn it on. So before sending it back for repair (to make it simple I bought it abroad during a business trip), I wanted to check inside to see whether a cable would have got loose during the transport. The problem is that I don't seem to find out what type of screwdriver I should use to open it! I tried hexagonal shape key but size 1.5 appears too small and size 2 is too big, it doesn't seem to be torx either. Any clue? I would like to synchronize the music on 2 SB3's when I listen to Internetradio (i.e. LastFM). Somehow this does not work. They will not play together! Do I anything wrong or is this just impossible?
