Re: [slim] horrible wireless network fallback mechanisms (general criticism)

2007-10-19 Thread mortslim

My thoughts on the issue of wireless "robustness":

I have three squeezeboxes. One of them has connection problems.

This problematic one is in a room with two receivers for wireless 2.4
ghz security cameras and my laptop.

I know the security camera receivers interfere with the squeezebox,
them both being on the 2.4 ghz spectrum. Ok. But...

Remember, I also have a laptop in this same room using the same 2.4 ghz
spectrum. And guess what? The laptop is "robust". It is a 1 year old
Dell that is 99.9% rock solid in terms of its wireless radio. It
doesn't care about stinkin interference. It keeps its connection. And
it does stream music.

So the bottom line as far as I am concerned is that if my Dell can
stream music under the "interference" conditions, why is my downtime
with my squeezebox in the same room probably a loss of the connection
at least once a day, with sometimes two choices and somethime three
choices displayed on the squeezebox (set up networking, current
settings, and sometimes connect to squeezenetwork). The squeezebox
has firmware, that firmware is embedded in a processor, so let's not
digress into a semantic game as to whether it is a computer or an
appliance. The bottom line is that a $300 "device" made in 2007 should
be able to hold onto a wireless signal as well as my Dell. I mean, the
Dell was only $1k and it has a harddrive, much more ram, windows
software, a 15 inch screen, a keyboard, etc, etc. I mean, come one,
how much does the radio part of the squeezebox cost anyway? I don't
think there are that many companies in the world who make these
"radios". I don't know their technical name, but I am talking about
the gizmo inside that does the sending and transmitting over wifi. You
know, the wifi part.

The Dell wifi part is robust. Why isn't the squeezebox wifi part.

Oh yes, I have experimented with different channels, moved it around
the room, rebooted, done a factory reset, updated the firmware, swapped
squeezeboxes from one room to the next amongst my three, you name it.
No better.

However I think I have stumbled on one idea that was implied to me in a
phone call to slim devices tech service. Which is as follows (and tell
me if you have ever heard about this before):

As background, in addition to the 3 squeezeboxes and laptop and two
security camera receivers, I have of course my router and one access
point, not to mention my neighbors gadgets as well, whatever they may
be.

Now the tech guy says to me that when I swapped a squeezebox from one
room to the next for troubleshooting purposes, that the "radio" may
have gotten confused as to where its connection was coming from and I
go mmm, that sounds interesting. So I am thinking that I should do
the following, which I did: I took the squeezebox right up next to the
router, did a factory reset, and then "locked" onto the router. Then I
took this squeezebox to my room of interference. Seems to have helped
somewhat.

So here is my question: does the "radio" in a squeezebox lock onto a
particular signal source and is not as flexible to latch onto a
different signal when you move the squeezebox around like a mobile
laptop or (in a different context) a cellphone as you travel on the
highway?

Bottom line: I think the squeezebox "radio" in its innards could have
been made more "robust".

Your times really aren't normal. Even my 1.6GHz Pentium M (2.5 years old)

It's a Pentium 4, 3.8 GHz w/ 1 GB of ram. It's not blindingly fast on
other tasks, but certainly more than adequate. I have no problem
having Word, Excel, and a browser open at the same time.

I just did some informal testing, and it's worse than I orginally said.
When I choose Browse/Genres and select a genre with about 30 artists,
it takes 3-4 seconds to load the page. Loading the server settings
page takes 3-4 seconds. Selecting "All Albums" from a genre that
produces a list of around 90 albums (text listing) takes 10-14 seconds
(no images involved!). Selecting album art view takes about 10 seconds
to begin to render the images, 14 seconds to finish.

I understand that transmitting large images and data over the net is
going to be slow. (Although, even graphics intensive web sites, such as
ESPN, are not as slow as slimserver on my machine). However, it seems
that when the server and client are on the same machine, this time
should be minimal. That leads me to suspect the time delay is in the
work slimserver must do, querying the database, etc. My question is
whether the sorts of delays I quoted above are to be expected with a
machine like mine. If so, will I see dramatic improvements if I get a
new, more powerful machine. Alternatively, is there something about
how i have the computer configured that might lead to slowdowns?

I should also mention that I have many of erland's plugins installed,
including Custom Browse, Custom Scan, and SQL Playlist. It's possible
that the additional computation they require is the culprit -- any
comments on that possibility would be welcome.

Thanks for the skin Ben, I much appreciate it.

I have one newbie question though. Is it possible to resize sites to
the width of the screen in the browser. I look at a lot of news sites
designed for 1024 width and end up scrolling left and right a bit.

Not everyone agrees. As someone put it, the SB2 looked like a 1970s
clock radio, whereas the SB3 looks like a 1990s clock radio.

They still come up on eBay fairly often. They hold their value well, so
expect to pay at least US$200 if you find one. Here's one that went last
week:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Squeezebox-2-wireless-g-digital-music-player_W0QQitemZ320168614885QQihZ011QQcategoryZ88760QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Anyway, as for speakers, there is a huge range of powered speakers out
there to choose from, with prices from $25 to $2500 (and probably
more). A popular choice around here is the Audioengine 5s, which go for
about $300 a pair.

Re: [slim] which format is actually transmitted?

2007-10-19 Thread radish

The options in the server specify what is allowed, for example in your
case it's saying that WAV->FLAC and FLAC->FLAC are allowed. To decide
between the two it looks at the type of player in use and decides based
on it's preference. An SB3 prefers FLAC first, then WAV, then MP3. So
your WAVs will be encoded to FLAC on the server and then decoded back
to PCM on the SB3. This is good because it saves bandwidth on the
network which makes the wireless streaming more reliable. If you don't
want that to happen (for example if you want to save CPU on the server)
disable the WAV->FLAC option.

[slim] Squeezebox stopping

2007-10-19 Thread Mike White

I have an SB 2 running slimserver 6.5.4 on Windows XP with all relevant
patches. 2.2 Ghz system with 1.2 gig memory.

I can play selections with no trouble on my wireless squeezebox, but
periodically I have the following trouble:

1) Playing a playlist will stop playing after 'X' period of time,
although the SB shows that it is still playing, just no sound out of
the speakers.

2) Pressing play will start the playlist over again (I am playing
shuffled, so it took a while to figure this out).

3) Pressing forward will result in the music resuming, although after
another 'X' (which is not the same as the first 'X' period of time, it
seems to be shorter) the sound will again go away.

4) This also happens when I am playing music from a genre, although not
as frequently. Again I am playing shuffled.

5) This does not seem to happen at all when I am using Softsqueeze 3.4,
or at the very least it appears that I am not able to reproduce it using
Softsqueeze.

To the best of my memory, I have cleared and done a complete rescan,
which has done nothing to fix this issue. As memory serves me this has
been a problem for the last two releases, but I can't swear to that.

Has anyone else seen this problem???

Mike

I'm sure the sentiment here is to have something hand-built with the
enthusiasm of a young team excited by their invention. How much more
satisfying is the purchase when something is hand-crafted, rather than
being manufactured on an assembly line by uncaring underpaid workers,
or worse being robotically assembledthis is ceratinly the reality,
however.
The squeezebox just hit a couple of computer distributors in OZ, with a
noticeable price drop, and propped on a shelf alongside the ipods and
zunes...

I woke up one day a couple of years ago and realized that my Bose Wave
Radio that I've had by the bedside for years had an aux input. I
started with an old SlimP3 that became surplus when I got SB3's, and
now I have an SB3 plugged in to that input. It works great, and is just
about the right amount of audio system for lying in bed.

I now have a houseful of SB3's and a Transporter, and I'm completely
happy with the system.

E.g. the (slim)server accesses a database and resizes artwork.

MicroSD goes to 8GB
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroSD

MiniSD only goes to 4GB

Digging a little deeper, N810 supports both (Mini or Micro + adapter).
Weird that Micro has a larger capacity since it's smaller in size.

[slim] How fast should slimserver be?

2007-10-19 Thread wnshall

How fast should I expect the web browser interface to slim server to be?
I've got a ~3 year old PC running XP with a squeezebox connected
wirelessly. I'm running ss 6.5, and mostly use Firefox. I find that
most anything I do in slimserver -- clicking on any link, eg. server
settings, or browse, etc. -- takes 1-3 seconds to render on the screen.
If I do something intensive like look at a long list of albums (with
cover art), or browse to a genre that has lots of artists in it (even
without displaying cover art), it takes even longer to display the
results. It seems to be rather slower than most browsing on the
internet, which has always struck me as odd since no data is actually
transmitted over the 'net, since both server and client are on the same
machine (isn't that right?).

Anyway, is this typical, or should I be looking for problems with my
setup?

Ben,

The 10GB is 2GB (internal) + up to 8GB (from micro SD)

I bet 8GB cards aren't far away, I've seen 6GB in the UK for £37.

Re: [slim] which format is actually transmitted?

2007-10-19 Thread Mark Lanctot

If you keep WAV - WAV built-in checked, FLAC - FLAC built-in checked and
MP3-MP3 built-in checked, it should send WAV as WAV, FLAC as FLAC and
MP3 as MP3 and the SB will decode to PCM.

If you have WAV - WAV unchecked and WAV - FLAC checked, it will
transcode to FLAC and you should have a FLAC process running on your
system.

If this isn't the case, I don't know what the problem is - but it isn't
a problem anyway beside CPU usage as FLAC and WAV are identical (and no
comment from the peanut gallery!)

But I believe I see what's going on now. If you have WAV - FLAC
checked, SS will prefer this over WAV - WAV in order to save bandwidth.
Uncheck WAV - FLAC if you want WAV sent as WAV.

OK, I see a WAV can have 3 "stream formats": FLAC, MP3 and WAV. Both
streams via FLAC (flac decoder) and WAV (built-in) are enabled. So,
which one is actually used?
Can I control this? If it is sent as WAV, what is the flac command-line
tool doing in my system?

What is done to the stream to get to digital-out (coax) after it gets
to the SB ?

Thanks for the quick answer,

G

If the format is listed as "built in" and enabled in Server Settings -
File Types, it's sent as that file and decoded in the SB.

SS never sends a PCM signal, a router wouldn't know what to do with it.
It's always one of the built-in formats, or something that's transcoded
to one of the built-in formats.

[slim] which format is actually transmitted?

2007-10-19 Thread Guiminha

Hi there,

I am wondering which format sound is actually transmitted from the
SlimServer to the SqueezeBox. Is it RAW PCM? WAV? Some compressed
format?

And which bitrate/sampling?

I thought that a PCM 16bit/44.1KHz signal was sent to the SqueezeBox,
which would only DAC it. But, noticed that SlimServer uses the flac
command-line tool for reading my .wav files.

Can anyone clear this out?

Regards

G

I don't know how far OS2008 is, but the browser install is fairly
painless. The only thing that is not on the menu is to switch back to
opera rendering. I was initially confused by this article:

I'll try to break it over the next couple of days and post any
discoveries back here. I'm a happy camper as I was about to downgrade

okay, that's great news.

If all else runs fine, I may end up making a "fix" for the player
chooser list bug by telling N800 users to upgrade to OS2008.

could you check this bug as well and see if it now works?

the only thing I don't know about is if these bugs are occuring in
OS2006 (i.e., the OS for the 770). I don't have a 770, so I'd need
someone with a 770, multiple players, and running the latest SC7.0 to

point your N800 browser to http://web-sniffer.net, then tell me what
you're seeing for the User agent.

Mine reports:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; X11; Linux armv6l; U) Opera 8.5
[en_GB] Tablet

SqueezeCenter's browser identification goes like this:

Code:

  if ($request->header('user-agent') =~ /Firefox/) {

  $return = 'Firefox';
  } elsif ($request->header('user-agent') =~ /Opera/) {
  $return = 'Opera';
  } elsif ($request->header('user-agent') =~ /Safari/) {
  $return = 'Safari';
  } elsif ($request->header('user-agent') =~ /MSIE 7/) {
  $return = 'IE7';
  } elsif (
  $request->header('user-agent') =~ /MSIE/   && # does it think it's IE
  $request->header('user-agent') !~ /Opera/  && # make sure it's not Opera
  $request->header('user-agent') !~ /Linux/  && # make sure it's not Linux
  $request->header('user-agent') !~ /arm/)  # make sure it's not a Nokia
tablet
  {
  $return = 'IE';
  }

In my case, it should return Opera, and if for some reason that doesn't
hit, it definitely shouldn't return IE, which is the only thing that
causes the browser redirect.

Let me know what your user-agent reports.

cheers,
#!/ben

Sorry, to quote one of the characters out of "Little Britain", (I don't
know if that has crossed the Atlantic yet) I got myself into a bit of a
kerfuffle!

I have two links - one on the desktop which loads the skin I've edited
(only minor, but it means they don't get overwritten on a point release
without me realising it), and another one in the favorites menu to load
the unmolested skin.

I was looking at the browser loaded from favorites and not the desktop.
It has fixed those "onchange" issues you have open in bugzilla for the
N800 though...

I couldn't vind a way to look at the headers, do tell.

that means the code I have in place to inspect the User-agent in the
HTTP header is mistakenly identifying this browser as Internet Explorer
and forcing a redirect. If you have the know-how to view the HTTP
headers, I'd love to see what this browser's User-agent string looks
like. Sounds like it's trying to spoof as IE.

Ben,

It appears that my 800 is using the MicroB browser as it now launches
the touch version of your skin (I can tell because the home page isn't
the customised one I have in my N800 html folder.)

It has the side benefit that the "onchange" controls that were broken
in V7.0 of Slimserver are now fixed.

So things might not be as bad as they first appeared.

[slim] SB3 display flickering

2007-10-19 Thread mapatton

Did a search and didn't see any threads related to SB3.

Recently got a SB3 and after a few days the display screen is
flickering. It is doing it appear to vertical bands of pixels. The
location and width of these bands does not appear to be fixed to the
display screen width itself, but appears to be relative to the width of
the information provided. The firmware was updated a few days ago when
installed.

Any thoughts? Bug in the firmware? Odd as it just started a couple days
after the update. Or is it a bum display?

PS: Other than that - Even the wife loves this thing :)

I have been loading up my CDs as flac and using SS for a while now and
just recently got the SB3. Now she sees the reason for the madness.

Many Thanks

How could it be anything *but* space? The N800 has 2 SD slots, and this
one has one MiniSD slot...that's gotta be a space decision.

also, from the Nokia press release:
"the Nokia N810 offers up to 45 hours of music playback and memory to
store up to 7,500 songs on an optional 10GB memory card*."

say what? There's a 10GB mini SD card available? Wikipedia says 4GB is
the max, PriceWatch doesn't even list anything beyond 2GB.

If a 10GB miniSD card exists, and my bet is that it does not, it's
gotta cost nearly the same as the N810 itself right now.

cheers,

Perhaps I haven't installed it properly but I followed the instructions

I'd have to say that it looks very much like they are moving to a
Mozilla-based browser in OS2008. I hope they made the choice for good
reason (better Flash 9 support maybe?), because I anticipate this being
a pain for me development-wise.

Nokia770 skin works really well in Firefox on a desktop, so maybe it
won't be all bad, but I'm going to brace for some unpleasantness.

Tim, are you thinking about the MicroB browser or something different?
If so, it's been available (for testing and development) for a few
months. Some of the features (non-SB related admittedly) look pretty
good, especially the improved RSS handling.

Glad to hear you got it sorted. Dark arts indeed...

I took a look at the WRAP firmware last night out of interest - if
you're thinking of upgrading your router, you may want to take a look

there for it. dd-wrt gets good reviews depending on your particular
needs.

Thanks also for updating the original post. Not everyone is as

Re: [slim] SB3 rebuffering and reset problems

2007-10-19 Thread Siduhe

If you were just running wireless, I would guess at some kind of
interference, or a problem with the wireless card, but if you get
exactly the same problem running wired (no wireless hops at all even
between your router and the box running slimserver) then that can't be
it.

Just to rule out some of the other regular issues, can you tell us a
bit about your setup - what OS are you running Slimserver on, do you
have any internet security or virus scanning installed like McAfee or
Norton - and is the troublesome SB within the range of IP addresses
that they consider to be "trusted"?

The only other thing I can think of is that you've got some kind of
DCHP conflict which might explain why some of the players work fine,
but the recent one doesn't. Is your router handing out the network
addresses automatically? Can you specific a static address for the SB
that doesn't work so well (outside the range of your DCHP set) and does
that work any better? So (as an example) if your router is handing out
192.168.0.2-200, make the SB have a static IP of 192.168.0.201.

Others may have different views, but if the answer to all of this is
no, it may be a faulty unit. Also a bit surprised you've not heard back
from Slim Devices - they are usually pretty prompt in my experience
(though I've not used support for a while now).

It is not very common for a wireless device to support 802.11b/g and
802.11a. b/g uses the 2.4GHz band whereas 802.11a transmits in the 5GHz
band. You therefore need a hybrid wireless card to support both bands.
I'm not sure if you also need different antennas. Not surprising, such
wireless cards are also more expensive. The cards used in the sb3 don't
support 802.11a so it's neither "not implemented" nor "undocumented".

Re: [slim] horrible wireless network fallback mechanisms (general criticism)

2007-10-19 Thread finger

BTW: I see that the SB3 is not able to transmit using 802.11a -- is this
not implemented or just -undocumented-?

Since I switched to channel 11, everything seems to work fine. Can't
believe it.

The ping-results changed too -- while I had response times of about 20
- 100ms yesterday (and days before), after the channel-switch the
replies already arrived after only 1.00 - 1.10ms. Crazy.

Thanks for your help folks. Next time I'll try to be more -sec-. ;)
