I've both rebooted and re-installed without changing things. The only
thing I have not done is a complete uninstall and re-install.

You didn't by chance install the VolumeLock or similar plugin :-)?

[slim] Switching SB3 off

2007-10-24 Thread soupdragon

good morning
i have a SB3 - and would like to know can i switch it off without
having to go through the rigmarole of re-assigning it when switching
back on - in essence i would prefer if possible to not have on standby
but rather attach mains supply to the unit when i want to listen to it,
but otherwise have it switched off and not produce a carbon footprint !

any wise owls to advise ?

Re: [slim] Switching SB3 off

2007-10-24 Thread James_B

I usually just turn mine on and off at the mains. You do have to go
through a few options with the RC but it is very fast. Once powered on
its something like..

Right to configure
Down three times to Squeeze Network or your server of choice
Then right to confirm

So it is about five clicks with the remote. I am with you on the power
saving!

I also find that using a static ip makes my SB connect slightly faster
than with dhcp. Not that the boot up time really bothers me anyway. It
is also an automatic procedure for me (no button presses), but I only
have one server with a static ip.

If I access volume under Settings the bar WILL move but volume does not

I agree with Michael that's probably a plug in that you're using. I had
this very thing happen to me and eventually found that it was the IR
Blaster plugin that fixed the volume. So, check around.

I think it does indeed auto default to whatever you used last. So
whatever floats your boat. I just find myself listening to SN at night
and then again first thing in the morning since i do turn my server
off. I also use SN and MP3Tunes for casual listening - perhaps that
saves a leaf or two :)

Question: Do you have a 770?

- Got it

Ben,

I've spent ages going through all the SqueezeCenter pages with the new
microB browaer. The only two issues are:

Sort order select works in artwork, but not list view.
The progress bar doesn't go all the way across the screen in now
playing. It seems to think that 100% is roughly in line with the mute
button.

Hope this is useful.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox stopping

2007-10-24 Thread Minora

The only change I made to my SB, before it stopped playing was to put it
in a slightly higher place and away from the amp. This improved signal
strength from a an average 20% (which was usually fine) to and average
50% in preparation for a party this weekend. Now I have no music.

The SB displays the song to be played, along with the duration etc. -
but nothing starts up. I can change menu's and select new songs, just
nothing happens. Any change made on the SB are reflected in Slim.
Similarly any changes made in Slim are reflected on the SB.

Any advice

I already had IR Blaster disabled (not checked) before the problem
occurred. I just tried removing the IR Blaster directory completely and

Apparently IR Blaster is responding in a bad way (even when disabled)

Re: [slim] iTouch as a remote

2007-10-24 Thread plympton

RD,

I'd also like to tweak the interface to be more finger friendly - I
love the current interface with a stylus, but for fingers it's the
pits.

Also, it uses CSS and loads a TON of bitmaps, etc. Unfortunately, each
fetch slows down the whole system because it has to be calculated,
etc...

I was thinking that replacing it with a single bitmap (or series of
bitmaps) with hot zone links (isn't that old-school HTML? I forget
what they're called - client-side maps?)

I looked into converting it to Flash, but that learning curve for
Actionscript/Flex was too big for me at the moment - and it wouldn't
work on the iPod/iPhone...

PS: Do you know if the iPod touch's browser can do full-screen? That's
one of the huge advantages of the Nokias - they do full-screen! (I
picked up a 770)

If there's a way I can help out, let me know. (dan -at freepdx d-t

[slim] Sonos getting smarter?

2007-10-24 Thread nicketynick

You can now get a $99 ZoneBridge, which is basically the wireless mesh
access point; add a ZonePlayer 80 at your stereo ($349), and the fancy
remote ($399 - too expensive, I'm sure SD is planning to be
better), and you've got the basic system that SB3/SC provides, at a
price that puts it much closer to being in a position to take away
market share.
IMO SB3 is the superior solution, but its interesting to watch how the
market develops.

Re: [slim] Sonos getting smarter?

2007-10-24 Thread Mark Lanctot

Back in the Slim Devices days, I always suspected Sonos was larger than
Slim - I had no idea why.

But now the tables have definitely turned. Logitech has much, much
deeper pockets than Sonos does and certainly has the RD capability and
marketing dollars to crush Sonos. Sonos is now the bit player.

Logitech is not standing still in this department either, it looks like
there are big changes coming.

[slim] Rescanning times (in SC7) with MusicIP

2007-10-24 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

I just did a rescan on the setting Look for new and changed music
after having added a new album. I have musicip enabled. My library is
~1 tracks mostly flac.

In SC7 the detailed scanning information page shows how much time each
stage takes (I don't know how much it can be trusted though). But
according to the numbers shown music ip scanning took ~18 minutes,
while all other stages each took 1 min.

Questions: Is this normal? Why does the musicip stage take so long? How
can the times be improved?

Thanks,
Bjørn

Zune is the most wonderfully perfect example of the brokenness of DRM

I think it is very important to consider like with like when comparing.
In the UK 2 x SB3 and a Nokia 800 style controller would now be around
£530. A similar Sonos package £770 (if you wanted the bridge to not
have the one ZP wired). That's still some difference but it's closer.
The NAS would be an optional extra for both. For me though, I'm not
sure what the Sonos actually does better to earn that extra £200/$400.
I can actually think of some things it doesn't do, or doesn't do as
well, hence my reason for going with the SB.

How about its mesh network, better NAS functionality, sexy dedicated

On the other hand Sonos has no display on its units and won't play (as

Actually Mark, they are both BIT players! As in ones and zeros, anyway
Sonus is moving closer to tail end Charlie, is still over priced, and
still less of a product then SB. of course this is all my very baised
opinion after spending 6 months to decide which Network Player to
purchase and having decided on Slim Devices. Slim Devices was already
pushing the envelope and with Logitech behind them, there should be new
things on the horizon that are going to put pressure on all the other
bit players in the market.

Biggest thing I can think of immediately is the fact that Logitech owns
the Harmony brand. I think we are going to see a huge difference in
future remotes for both SB and TP. If I were Logitech, I would put a
small 5x7 ad of the TP on one side and SB on the other inside every
Harmony Remote they sell and maybe even the computer products they sell
because those buyers have a PC for sure and are half way to enjoying
network audio. Cross branding and cross promoting would make SB sales
soar and add to TP sales in some fashion. For what its worth that my 10
(read in bits)cents.

Not sure I get you here about talking directly to the NAS. There's
still a software layer with Sonos+NAS; I presume it's UPnP, although I
guess it could be something else. And, even though Sonos can run on a

I didn't get an answer from the Music Label forum. I really am curious
where the tag information should be coming from. Should it be on the CD
from which I have copied the music and saved it as a wma file or in some
other format? Should it come from Gracenote when I query that database
with the CD in the computer player for information about the CD? If
that doesn't happen, is the tag information supposed to come from a
software program for cataloging the music files?

And I am still wondering why tag data is important to Slimserver.

There is no information on the CD other than the music itself.

A computer-based application always has to get data from somewhere
else, in this case Gracenote.

If that doesn't happen, is the tag information supposed to come from a
software program for cataloging the music files?

What ML2008 has done is it's added all that data to its database, but
it has not written any tags and will not until the software is updated
from what that forum post says.

And I am still wondering why tag data is important to Slimserver.

That's how SlimServer and every other software player (Winamp, Windows
Media Player, foobar, iTunes) gets its Artist - Album - Track - Genre,
etc. info. Without tags, SlimServer can try to guess these things
based on file and folder structure (artist/album/title.wma or
artist-album-title.wma) but if that file and folder structure isn't
there, SlimServer has no way to tell who the artist, album, title,
genre etc. is. Nor will any other software player.

Incidentally SlimServer is fairly unique in that it can guess tags
based on file and folder structure, but if you don't even have that, it
can't tell the files apart. You'd have 1 albums with 5267 songs by 1
artists - the one album would be No Album, the songs would be called
by their titles, and the artist would be No Artist. Not workable.

Keep making that newbie mistake of not doing a search before asking a
question that over the years has probably been covered or asked at
least once before. Lesson learned and again thanks

So anyway so others don't have to trot off to the link if they don't
feel like it: The answer was about 5 watts no matter what seems to be
going on.

Now for my question to everybody that is turning off their SBs at night
to save Mother Earth: What is your TV set to?
1 instant on (meaning its in full standby)
2 full off (the remote will not turn the TV on you have to push the
button)
3 Or Mother Earth mode (unplugged until you need to watch it)

I bet most are answer number one. I don't think we need to worry about
fully unplugging our SBs until there are more of them then DVD players
and TVs (hey I can dream can't I).

My CD player in the car plays CD's of mp3's... useful for cramming 10
hours of music onto a disc. It reads tags for display.

Slimserver wants (but does not need... more below) tags for display and
sorting. How do you know what album 01 Track01.flac belongs to? What
else would you want it to display on your screen? If you are content
with the display looking like poop (ie, Track01.flac) and with
confusing browsing (why is everything filed under unknown artist? It
should just KNOW this!), then, sure, skip tags... but that would,
well, suck.

Tags are intended as being a cross-player method of passing information
about the contents of the file. Whether it is WMP, or iTunes or
Slimserver or my ancient PJBox, tags carry at least the album, artist
and track so all of them know what it is... It even passes to my car
stereo what it is playing.

Slimserver -does- have a Guess Tags function that lets it guess tags,
but it requires you be very precise in your naming and organizing
especially if you want it to handle anything more than
Artist/Track/Album. Genre, Year, Composer, Band are very useful for
some collections and trying to get those all crammed into path/file
would be icky.

Re: [slim] Can I Use Other Catalog Software?

2007-10-24 Thread JSharp

Radish,

In some ways, your post brings me back to the beginning of this thread.
I just read the entire thread again. I think some poorly expressed
statements I made may have left the wrong impression. I understand the
general concept that SB needs SS to run, like Client for Microsoft
Networks is needed to access resources on a Windows network. I never
meant to say that I didn’t want to use SS for its resources to transfer
sound files from the computer to SB to the home audio system. I
understand that SB relies on and MUST have SS to operate. But I also
understand (I think) that SS has a catalog feature from which the user
selects the sound files to be transferred. What I want to do is use a
different catalog as an overlay to only that part of the SS software
from which I can select the sound files and then rely on SS’s expertise
to move the sound files to SB. To continue the analogy, rather than use
Windows Explorer to surf the necessary Client for Microsoft Networks, I
would use a third-party utility which is more powerful and
full-featured than Windows Explorer. But in using that analogy, I
don’t mean to offend SS and suggest that it is not powerful. I want to
use the separate catalog software only because I like it and have many
music tracks cataloged there with the same tracks (mostly jazz) being
played by different groups of musicians. I can select the same song by
different groups of musicians or the same musicians but over different
time periods and listen to the differences. It’s really not a huge
desire, but if it can be done, I’d like to do it. Certainly, I could
maintain the catalog software I have for its information, etc., and
then turn to SS’s catalog to choose the songs. Maybe that’s what I
will have to do.

In short, I know that I NEED to use SS with SB and I WANT to use SS and
all of its features (because it gets such great reviews), EXCEPT I want
to use a different software from which to select the music. It seemed
originally to me as though SS would not care whether I used its music
browser or my own, but it sounds as though I have to use its catalog
system. And then the complication of tags arose.

I know we are at the “beat the dead horse” stage in this thread and if
everyone is tired of it, I understand. I have learned and appreciate
all the advice I have received. I’ll eventually get something to
work.

John

Same problem for me. Just stops playing intermittently. My computer
says the signal strength is very good. I got rid of my 2.4GHz phone

but it's not running when the problem occurs. When I check available
wireless networks, there are typically 4-5 signals I can see from
neighbors. Can't do much about that.

I went to check which channel I use for my Wifi and noticed that I had
forgotten there are settings for 'Super G' and 'Super G with Turbo'
which supposedly speed up the network. I wondered if that could be a
problem and a Google search brought up a few articles about how many
technical types think these modes can increase the potential for
interference. I switched my router to standard G mode without Super G
or Turbo. We'll see if this helps!

Re: [slim] not finding all my songs

2007-10-24 Thread jvlgato

 Hi Gang,

Sorry if this problem has been posted before, but I could not find
 anything in the forums.

My SS is not finding all my songs/albums. I am not running itunes but
rather using the SS interface. I have asked it to rescan my library
several times, but a good amount of my music is not showing up. Any
 suggestions?

 Thanks

I had this problem although was using iTunes; also had same songs
listed multiple times. Rescanning didn't help. I had to click the
choice to clear all the songs and rescan and this worked for me. Have
you tried that option?

Re: [slim] Can I Use Other Catalog Software?

2007-10-24 Thread radish

Oh I quite understand what you're trying to do, and I don't doubt that
it would be possible to integrate the two apps in that way. I just
don't think it's very likely to actually happen - it would be a lot of
work and to be honest it seems like a pretty niche requirement. The
suggestions you're getting from people are just trying to offer
alternative solutions which might work well for you. If you're 100% set
on using your existing software though, i don't see how you'd get it to
work sensibly without someone doing some development for you.

Re: [slim] Can I Use Other Catalog Software?

2007-10-24 Thread erland

John, if you like to make the combination of Music Label 2008 and
SlimServer to work as you like, it would probably require some
development work. It might be easy or it might be hard, it all depends
on how open Music Label 2008 is for third party development.

Some solutions that might work:

1.
Extend the Music Label software so it sends a signal to SlimServer with
the tracks you have selected to play. SlimServer has several
programmatic interfaces to receive this information already today, so
changes would only be required on the Music Label side. The natural
choice would be to use the SlimServer CLI interface. All this either
relies on that the Music Label developers implement this or that Music
Label is possible to extend with plugins. In case Music Label is
possible to extend with plugins, you can do it yourself or get some
third party developer to do it for you.

2.
If the Music Label database has an open interface, it would be possible
to build a SlimServer plugin that read information from the Music Label
database. This would probably require a lot more work than solution 1
mentioned above, but it wouldn't require any changes on the Music Label
side assuming it's database already has an open interface. The solution
would result in that you would get the information stored in the Music
Label database into the SlimServer database, you would have to select
what to play from the SlimServer/SqueezeBox interfaces but you could
browse by the Music Label data. So if you really want to select what to
play from Music Label, this is not a working solution.

3.
If you are running Windows, you could install the Wave Input plugin in
SlimServer. This will make it possible to play tracks in Music Label
but SlimServer will pickup the audio from the sound card in the PC and
transfer it to the SqueezeBox. I'm not sure how a low quality sound
card in the PC will affect the sound quality from the SqueezeBox in a
scenario like this. The advantage of this solution is that it wouldn't
require any development work. I think this solution was mentioned
earlier in the thread.

Solution 1 and solution 2 is already today used by another external
catalog software called MusicIP, so we know solutions using these
concepts will work. It just requires some development to get it up and
running. The iTunes integration in SlimServer is another example that
uses the solution 2 concept, where the iTunes database is read from a
SlimServer plugin.
