I think the most important thing is that I *can* hack the menus! The
simplicity of my menu arrangements reflects my own (perhaps limited)
usage of the wide range of functions/services provided by the SB3.

Anyway, for what it's worth my public SB3 Remote top level menus look
like this:

Favorites
Albums
Artists
Genres
New Music
Years
Playlists
Random Mix
BBC Radio
LastFM

This is with SC7. BBC Radio is a renamed AlienBBC.
Search is performed via the Remote search button. I've also modified
the default behaviour of the screen savers slightly.
I am happy that the Favorites facility is now implemented sensibly in
SC7. My favorites mainly includes Shoutcast radio stations and BBC
Radio Listen Again programs (The Archers.. you should try it!).

I am very much looking forward to being able to arrange the Remote
menus via drag and drop (SC 7.1??). I'd love to be able to have a lot
more control too... especially the ability to simply rename menu items
(i.e. like Alien BBC to BBC Radio), create new items and add/remove
sub-items. Not too much to ask huh? :-)

I am hoping that I'll be able to do the same on the Jive remote too.

Hmm.. I should have stuck this in another thread :-(

nothing nearly as complex as Win/Foo), so the user could still just use

Okay, I follow you now. But making slimserver, which is obviously a

a couple of the many details to work out are (1) with multiple SBs, how
does slimserver know to which SB it should stream the CD?, and (2) most
headless computers running slimserver are in relatively inaccessible

Hi aubuti,

1) This could hopefully be easily selected within the relevant page of
an enhanced SS (why not?)

2) The Waveinput plugin itself is already often being used in this way,
right? The SD Dir of Engineering wrote that people had been requesting
this for years! I believe I'm not the only one who would find this
enhancement extremely functional. It seems to me that serving music
files from an optical-drive platter is just as much serving, as when
it serves from a hard-drive platter. Users would still serve most music
from ripped copies on harddrive, but being able to also spin the
occasional CD on your SS computer would be a function, that more people
would appreciate than you might think. :)

Honestly, why not enhance SS to do this? And why not also have an
option to serve the PCM audio to a selected soundcard? Maybe it is
extremely difficult to program and implement, I don't know. Perhaps I
am the only one who would really enjoy and use these functions...

[slim] Songs removed from library when hard drive accidentally turned off

2007-12-31 Thread amorphia

Hi all,

I have a silly habit of forgetting to turn on my network hard drive
where my music resides before trying to play a song on the squeezebox.
Slimserver has a silly habit deleting the said song from the library
index whenever this happens. This forces me to do a full library rescan
before I can play the song again. Over my network this takes hours, very
annoying!

Is there some way I can disable this feature?

Cheers!

[slim] Grouping multiple albums, how does it work?

2007-12-31 Thread alanj

Can anyone explain how the Group multiple albums option works? ( using
SC7 )

I have it turned on but am not sure what results I am supposed to see?
Should I just see a single album rather than 2? If I play the first
should the second automatically follow? ( Neither of these appear to
happen )

How should multiple albums be ripped to facilitate this option?
I have many formats such as CD1, CD 1, disc 1 etc picked up from
freedb. Should there be an option to list all that are acceptable? Or
should I change them all to a single suitable format? If so what?

Any clarification most welcome.

Re: [slim] End of the Squeezebox?

2007-12-31 Thread Siduhe

As I've mentioned on a couple of other threads, the position in the UK
is exactly that - it is technically illegal even to rip your own CDs to
make a portable copy or backup. We have no concept of fair use at
law.

The BPI said in 2006 that they would not pursue consumers -if they
copy their CDs for their own private use in order to move the music
from format to format-, however there's some concern about what this
actually means. For example, if I upload my music to mp3tunes and use
it for playback at work rather than as a backup copy - does this fall
within moving the music from format to format?

The 2003 EU Copyright Directive was intended to retain an ability for
consumers to make copies for purely private purposes (in the sense that
the use must be domestic). However, this has been brought into law in a
number of different ways in different EU countries (almost all of them
are more restrictive on consumers than before the Directive was put
into law). The exceptions to this are the UK and Ireland which allow
time shifted recordings only (so I can copy or record something and
listen for a limited time such as seven days, but no longer).

All my music is bought and paid for, or ripped from CDs that I retain
the physical media for. However, I resent having to rely on the whims
of the BPI as to whether they will or will not maintain the personal
use exception now or in future.

One small glimmer of hope in Europe is a recent study published on the
Copyright Directive (by the European Commission) which points some of
these issues out and concludes that the Directive has given
rights-holders -near-absolute control over acts [digital/electronic
reproduction] which in the off-line world were never the right holderÂ’s
prerogative- and which rights go significantly further than the
Directive was intended to allow.

So there is a prospect of some amending legislation in Europe
in...oh...about 2-6 years...by which time the technology will have
moved on sufficiently to make whatever is put through completely
obselete.

You should use a common format and it's stored in a special tag.
It depends on the format you are using for your music, please look at
the following link at the Disc Number row:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimServerSupportedTags

It is important that the album title is exactly the same on all discs.

So if you have an album with two discs they can be tagged as:

Disc 1
==
ALBUM=My nice album
DISC=1

Disc 2
==
ALBUM=My nice album
DISC=2

It won't work if the album title contains something like (disc 1) at
the end since SlimServer then don't know that this is the same album.

Re: [slim] Couple of nagging questions...

2007-12-31 Thread mflint

Disclaimer: I haven't tried this!

But...

If your server is linux-based or *BSD-based, then FUSE [1] might come
to your rescue. There's a FUSE-based filesystem called CDDFS [2] which
allows the audio CD to be 'mounted', and the tracks appear as WAV
files.

So you could just select an empty directory in your music library
folder as the mountpoint.

This would (of course) only be a starting point, as it raises more
questions than it answers:

- slimserver would index the virtual WAVs into its database - you
probably wouldn't want that
- no track metadata, and titles would probably be something
non-descriptive like track001.wav

[slim] Wrong Squeezeboxes playback

2007-12-31 Thread jordi . c

hello,

I have an annoying problem when I play my music with slimserver
webinterface.

I use the skin 'fishbone'. When I click on the left panel on an album
to playback my Squeezebox that is selected on the right panel won't
playback it but the squeezebox in front of it.

Let me clearify myself a bit :).

I have 4 SB's named:
-SB_Kitchen
-SB_Living room
-SB_Sleeping room

When I have SB_Living room in the right panel and click on an album on
the left panel to playback the SB_Kitchen starts to play :(.

I have to stop this SB manual (SB_Kitchen) and re-click on SB_Living
room on the right panel. If I now press again on an album to play it
use the right SB.

I know mplayer can be told to play a selected track - I'm not sure

All that is needed is a small plugins that defines a protocol handler

(e.g. cddrive://1)

To SC it would behave like a stream and not a file and so would not be

Re: [slim] End of the Squeezebox?

2007-12-31 Thread 4mula1

There's a blurb on Ars Technica about CD sales dropping 20% this
Christmas and it also pointed out some things I'd been thinking about.

I won't argue that file sharing is a bad thing, and in the
pre-litigation days I would've said that the artist and label deserved
their compensation for their work. After the litigations began the
RIAA can go, well, you can imagine.

Now we live in the age of digital downloads from retailers such as
Apple and Amazon. We can download the tracks we want and skip what we
don't. Brilliant! Now let's think about this, the RIAA believes that
the lossless rips that we, the consumer, make with CDs that we bought
are unauthorized copies yet now condone purchasing individual tracks
(generally in a lossy format and now becoming DRM free) and getting
only a fraction of the revenue that would be generated from a full
album sale is acceptable?

Sure, a lot of albums have a few dud tracks and a couple of gems and it
can be a little frustrating plopping down the full price of a CD and
only end up with a couple tracks you like, but that's how it's been
since the beginning.

Single track downloads are driving the decline of CD sales, those of us
who rip should be commended by the RIAA for buying the whole album,
warts and all. There have been so many articles about how the labels
were unhappy with Apple's $0.99 pricing that there were a lot of
threats about pulling out of their store. In this case the RIAA has
less control over their margins, unlike CD sales where they're priced
more favorably for the RIAA.

The RIAA can't allow legal digital downloads while still crowing that
file sharing is killing CD sales. Sooner or later the general public
will figure out (more aptly have it pointed out to them) that legal
downloads are killing the CD. If there wasn't already enough dislike
towards the RIAA already just wait until the masses realize that they
have been misled. Consumers vote with their wallet, and the RIAA wants
your vote.

Here's the Ars link:

Re: [slim] Couple of nagging questions...

2007-12-31 Thread aubuti

NewBuyer;252887 Wrote:
 Hi aubuti,

 1) This could hopefully be easily selected within the relevant page of
 an enhanced SS (why not?)

 2) The Waveinput plugin itself is already often being used in this way,
right? The SD Dir of Engineering wrote that people had been requesting
this for years! It also seems (at least to me) that serving music files
from an optical-drive platter is just as much serving, as is serving
from a hard-drive platter. Users would still serve most music from
ripped copies on harddrive, but being able to also spin the occasional
CD on your SS computer would be a function, that more people would
appreciate than you may think. :)

Honestly, why not enhance SS to do this? And why not also have an
option to serve the PCM audio to a selected soundcard? Maybe it is
extremely difficult to program and implement, I don't know. Perhaps I
am the only one who would really enjoy and use these functions...
Re (1), sure that makes sense. Re (2) I'm just saying that while adding
this feature to a headless server is do-able (as demonstrated by the
WaveInput plugin), there's likely to be a lot more demand from people
running slimserver on ordinary PCs or workstations, rather than
headless servers, which are often located down in the basement, up in
the attic, or some other out of the way place.

In other words, my point (2) wasn't saying that serving bits from an
optical drive is that different from serving it from a hard drive.
Rather that from a user convenience standpoint a headless server isn't
the best target market. Indeed, many headless servers don't have CD
trays.

[slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2007-12-31 Thread SilverRS8

Hi All,

Since I bought my Squeezebox I have greatly expanded my music
collection which is good. The bad thing is that when I want to play
something I can't possibly remember my whole collection. I think that
sounds pretty familiar to many of you?

In search of a tool able to print the collection in nice format to
paper I got stuck; there isn't such a tool.

Therefore I have created a script to do exactly that and maybe someone
can use it to so I decided to post it here.

The script is called AlbumCatalogCreator. I have attached some images
from the GUI and the output files. There are a few options to change
the layout. The help file further explains most of the questions (I
hope).

How does it work:
- It connects directly to SlimServer database using default credentials
used at installation. It then queries the database and generates the
output.

Some things to know:
- The mySQL ODCB driver is required to be able connect to the
SlimServer database. It can be downloaded here:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/3.51.html
- It looks for album cover files named either cover.jpg or folder.jpg
which must reside in the actual album directory.
- It assumes there is a dedicated folder for compilation albums because
the SlimServer internal compilation detection doesn't work very well (I
am forcing myself to put it nicely)
- It automatically inserts page breaks (only for printing purposes).
Since browser print margins can only be set using the browser, you may
need to narrow the default margings. You can also change the header and
footer so the ugly URL isn't printed put page number are instead (see
help screen in application for more info)

Well, I hope you can use it at your advantage.

I consider it a Beta version because it works for me but hasn't been
tested by anyone else yet.

Since its a VBScript, you can change it yourself but I would greatly
appreciate if you use this threads in case of bugs or ideas for me to
work on so other users can use it too.

The script can be downloaded from:
http://www.vanholt.nl/uploads/AlbumCatalogCreator.zip

Start the script by double clicking the AlbumCatalogCreator-V1.hta
file.

For those interested; have fun and happy new year in advance.

Frank

True, but the WMA streams are much higher quality - compare the RadioIO
Ambient 128k WMA stream (http://streampoint.radioio.com/streams/114) to
Groove Salad 128k MP3 stream (http://somafm.com/groovesalad.pls) - on a
good stereo or home theater setup with Dolby Pro Logic II Music you'll
hear much more stereo separation and openness.

Here's a better comparison - the Radioio ambient stream in 128k mp3:

Seems more open, with better definition on cymbals.

[slim] Gap of a few seconds in FLAC music playback on my SB1

2007-12-31 Thread norderney

I posted the following in the Beta forum but have not had any replies
yet. So this afternoon, I decided to uninstall SC7 and downgrade to
SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568. So having installed version 6.5.4
and let it do a full music scan, I was very disappointed to see that I
am STILL suffering the same problem. Getting a gap of a few seconds
when doing things like searching for music or when the web browser
freshes the music playing screen. The music plays fine with NO gaps if
I am accessing other web sites other than slimserver. I have no problem
searching for music with the remote control, as long as the slimserver
web browser is not active.

I only get this problem with FLAC files. MP3 files play ok all the time
even when the web browser refreshes.

I am currently running SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 15528 on a Windows
Vista Ultimate Dell PC with 3Gb RAM.
My SqueezeBox is an SB1.

This is what I posted to the Beta forum, but is also seems to apply to
6.5.4 too for me!
I recently upgraded to SC7 and have been suffering a problem when using
the web browser. I control my SB1 with a Dell Axim PDA using Internet
Explorer. When the web browser refreshes the screen each time a new
track starts playing I get a gap of a few seconds in the music
playback. This also happens if I use the web browser on my PC. If I
close down all web browsers and control my SB1 with the remote control,
it works fine.

Is this a problem with my SB1?

Any advice would be appreciated.

With one very important difference - in the beginning the concept of
the album was just that - albums generally encompassed a theme and were
meant to be enjoyed in their entirety to fully appreciate the artist's
work whereas today's mass-market, one hit wonder crap lends itself to
sale of single tracks - the cd's are exactly that - a collection of

If the database structure hasn't been changed SC should work. The
script currently expects the database to be on the same machine but you
can easily change this.

Change the the ip number after 'server=' in the line:
Const ConnectString = DRIVER={MySQL ODBC 3.51
Driver};Server=127.0.0.1;Port=9092;Database=slimserver;UID=slimserver;Password=;Option=3

It is on line 41 of the .hta file. Let me know if it works. I'm very
curious though if album cover detection will work when the files are on
a linux server. Let me know the outcome!

But you have a good point there. I can add an option to specify the
server address in the GUI.

[slim] Wireless network confusion

2007-12-31 Thread andyda

In my home music system I have:

iMac G4 as a music server, used for nothing else.
2 original Squeezebox (wireless B)
1 SLIMP3 with a WET-11 wireless adapter
1 Airport Express basestation

My music network is a sperate wireless network from my other network
wich is used to connect ot the Internet. The music network is internal
only, no connection to the outside world.

I use channel 1 for my Internet connected network and cnannel 11 for my
music network. These two channels have been most reliable and least
prone to interferance of others I have tried in my house.

My question is:

When using the Airport Express base station, sometimes the music stops
and then the Squeezeboxes restart on their own. Kind of like starting
a song, then stopping and starting over again.

I recently purchased an Airport Exterme base station, in hopes of
getting better range. It doesn't seem too much better. But when I am
using the AIrport Exterme base station, and the music stops, the
Squeezeboxes doe not restart like when using the Airort Express base
station.

I believe the settings are identical in both base stations and yes, I
only use one base station at a time. If one is in use, the other is
unplugged and unpowered.

Anybody else have similar experiences with the Airport Extreme base
station?

Thanks for any help,

Andy

SlimServer Version: 6.5.4 - 12568 - Linux - EN - utf8
Perl Version: 5.8.8 sparc-linux
MySQL Version: 5.0.24a-Debian_3.infrant1
RAIDiator 4.00c1-p2

I wasn't plagued by this until upgrading the RAIDiator version (and
consequently SB3 firmware and Slimserver), but it seems others have
been. I'm seeing both pauses and stops, though primarily pauses and
only when by SBs are synced.

[slim] Connection to Denon 3802

I am struggling to connect the Squeezebox to the correct spot on the AV
receiver. I have tried coax, optical3 and still no music output. Is
there an easier way for a beginner to get connected?

[slim] Odd entries in home menu

2007-12-31 Thread dbls

I have two peculiar entries in the home menu, and I can't figure out why
they're there, or how to get rid of them. I've attached an image from
the SqueezeCenter UI, but they also appear on the SlimServer UI
(installed on a different computer) as well as in the Home menu of the
players.

The two odd listings are:

JKLS: JKLS:
JKLS: Owner

JKLS is the name of my son's computer. I don't think he ever installed
SlimServer on his computer; it's not there now. What's especially odd
is that when I installed SqueezeCenter for a trial run on my laptop, it
created those two entries.

What's going on?

Either type of digital output should just work. Most Denon's have a
menu that requires you to assign each digital input to the desired
input source. Have you confirmed that's set up correctly?

I will also fix the helpfile issue tomorrow. I used a fixed path
assuming the mshta executable is in c:\windows and you apparently have
windows installed in a different directory. Sorry for my (ugly) coding
error (never use fixed paths, use system variables). Must have been a
quick coding mistake and never looked at it again. (its almost party
time here because of old-new year).

 Frank

Ok, I tried beta 2 and got the same error, but after I click ok on the
error message it starts IE with the content of my music catalog. There
are some album covers missing which should be there. I double checked
the albums with missing album art in the resulting catalog and all my
album folders have a corresponding folder.jpg. I also have album art
embedded in every track. The font for the tracks also look a bit small
in the browser, but it might be my browser's font settings.

Btw, thanks for sharing the script... it shows a lot of promise.

Don't worry about fixing it today... Go party and have a Happy New
Year!

Did you try my suggestion of Album Art Aggregator yet?
(http://team.thenexusnet.com/nexus/AAA) You just point it at your root
music folder, tell it the naming standard you use (\artist\album for
example) and it will tell you any folders that don't already have a
folder.jpg or similar file, and then fetch it from Amazon if
available...

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2007-12-31 Thread alanj

Hi Frank,
Well been delving on my Linux server and found as already
pointed out by Fletch that only local connections are enabled.

This should be dead easy to change as it is only a setting in the
my.cnf file to alter the bind address from the current 127.0.0.1 to
whatever your servers ip is. lol However I have tried that but the
my.cnf file gets overwritten and reset to the original every time I
restart it! Very annoying.

Don't suppose anyone knows what in Slimserver is resetting the
/var/cache/slimserver/my.cnf file do they?
I think it is being created from a /var/share/slimserver/my.tt file but
not sure how to change that to set the correct ip as it isn't a straight
copy but full of variables.

I assume you're using a recent SC7 nightly? If so, look for
bindAddress in server.prefs. I'm not sure what the syntax is if you
want to list multiple IPs.

Re: [slim] Connection to Denon 3802

2007-12-31 Thread ceejay

Agreed with Fletch - your problem is almost certainly with the Denon,
the SB always outputs on optical, coax and analog all the time. You
need to decide which input you want to map the SB to - eg CD: then
go to the input mapping menu and tell the Denon that the CD input is
coming in to coax 2 or whatever.

You might also want to consider that the DAC inside the SB is probably
better than the one built into the Denon, so unless you're into the
processed modes (in which case it will digitise anyway) you might find
the sound quality better with an analog link. Then select Direct (as
opposed to Stereo) mode.

Re: [slim] Album Art - How To Acquire

2007-12-31 Thread desertrat58

I use Album Art Downloader on a Win XP machine. Aggregator did not work
for me, period. I don't think it's supported anymore..?

Downloader searches, I dunno, 8 or so data bases for artwork based on
tag info. It batch processes folder structures, and uses tag info to
retrieve artwork. For each CD, it retrieves 20-40 jpegs you can quickly
scan and choose from. I spend about 30 seconds per CD to choose, based
on the correct cover and image size. You click on the image file you
want, and it saves it to cover.jpg (or whatever), in the folder you
want.

I was able to gather images for ~900 CDs pretty effortlessly. Highly
recommended.

would help more people than you think.

For instance, I have a totally silent headless PC right next to my

basic CD-playback functionality in SS would be extremely useful to me,
as would having a send to soundcard option. I'm sure many others too
