Re: [slim] SS Path for multiple external usb HDD

2008-03-15 Thread ModelCitizen

This is one way to do it.

Creat a folder on your main drive (you could use the existing My Music
folder in My Documents if you liked) and then place shortcuts in it to
all the plcaes you music is held. If you have music on two other
drives, put in two shortcuts dirctly to those drives. You can create
shortcuts by right clicking in your new folder and selecting
New/Shortcut from the resulting drop down menu.
Point SlimCentre at your new folder (or My Music Folder, if you used
the one that already existef))

Another way to do it is to create a shortcut directly in your first
music drive to the second music drive. Point SlimCentre at the first
music drive.

I'm certain this must all be written in the Wiki.

So I've just installed SqueezeCenter for use with my Squeezebox Duet. On
the very second page of the setup, it says it wasn't able to connect to
the Web. On the following page, it says it can't find my account (even
though I'm already logged into it!).

Are you talking about the SqueezeNetwork accoun? If you have a problem with it,
just leave those fields empty and skip that page. You can always verify the
account and enter it in Settings - SqueezeNetwork.

Are you using any non-latin characters in your login/password?

[slim] Low footprint integrated headless player required

2008-03-15 Thread ModelCitizen

Hello,
In my quest for true whole-house audio it's struck me that I need a
Windows-based low footprint player, integrated with SlimCenter, that
does not show on my PC (is this headless?). I only need to control it
via the SlimCenter web interface and the jive controller.

Softsqueeze appears no good (large java footprint) and no headless
capability.

Squeezeslave seems to be almost there but the latest version on
Sourceforge (0.7.4.2:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=105169) is not
integrated with SlimServer, opens up a dos box when run and does not
run as a windows service (so requires me to be logged on at the PC for
it to run).

If I could work out how to run Squeezeslave as a Windows Service and
this meant that the dos box did not open it would be fine.

Then all it needs to is to be seemlessly integrated into SlimCenter
7.0! :-)

If you want a windows based PC, I'd control it over VNC or Remote
Desktop if I were you.

Softsqueeze appears no good (large java footprint) and no headless
 capability.

Just keep it logged in and keep SoftSqueeze running. It can (also) be
controlled with the Controller and the web interface (of course). How
much does a megabyte of RAM cost these days? That's enough to run
Softsqueeze and Squeezecenter. There's no reason a headless (no display)
box couldn't run a virtual display.

Squeezeslave seems to be almost there but the latest version on

All players (including SoftSqueeze and squeezeslave) are seemlessly
integrated in SC7.0 and can be conveniently controlled with the

Personally, I'd use something like Ubuntu for such an application. It's
free, Squeezecenter runs better on it and it needs less resources.

Re: [slim] Low footprint integrated headless player required

2008-03-15 Thread ModelCitizen

Thanks for your reply Peter but all you advise is a bit over the top for
me.

* Run Softqueeze ( java - unnecessary permanent overhead. Do not want
graphic interface either)
* Run VNC (I only have one permanently on PC, it runs SlimCenter? Now I
want it to be an audio source too)
* Run a Linux PC (learn a new OS for one app? I have children)

For my immediate requirements it looks like all I need to do is get
Squeezeslave to run as a service (or put up with the permanently open
dos box and the fact that it only starts at login).

It's all a bit immaterial at the moment though. Syncing Squeezeslave
appears to have destroyed the sound output from all my players.

[slim] Controller syncing - could be clearer?

2008-03-15 Thread ModelCitizen

Hello,

I think the way sync works on a controler could be made a lot clearer.
At the moment when I sync a device I am not clear if I am syncing to
the listed device or syncing with the listed device or even if
this matters.

In addition, if I sync a device to another then navigate to the other
player and look at the sync settings it does not appear to be synced
with the player I have just synced it to.

There's more odd stuff too... but am not certian I can reproduce it yet
(e.g. all my players appear to be playing in sync at the moment but
there is no sound coming out of any of them... this may be due to the
recent addition of Squeezeslave though).

You can create shortcuts by right clicking in your new folder and

I generally 'right drag' from the storage folder into the Music Folder.
When you drop the object you'll get a context menu. Just select

Re: [slim] Low footprint integrated headless player required

2008-03-15 Thread JJZolx

You can run squeezeslave.exe as a service on Windows. I do this on my
work PC.

First, you'll need the Windows Resource Kit Tools for XP/Win2k3.
Download it 'here'
(Despite the page heading, these tools are for XP as well as Windows
Server 2003. Verify this by looking on the page under Sytem
Requirements.)

Install the Resource Kit Tools on the server. You only need two of the
tools, so after intalling the kit you can, if you like, safely delete
everything except:

instsrv.exe
srvany.exe

Then from a command prompt install the service using:

Code:

instsrv Squeezeslave C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\srvany.exe

Then run regedit to edit the service entry in the registry. Start
Run enter 'regedit'. Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Squeezeslave

Right-click 'Squeezeslave' and select New Key. Name it 'Parameters'.
Right-click 'Parameters' and select New String. Name this
'Application'. Double-click 'Application' and set its value to the
full path to squeezeslave.exe. On my system I have it at

C:\Program Files\Squeezeslave\squeezeslave.exe

Then create another New String in Parameters called 'AppParameters'.
Set its value to the IP address of your SqueezeCenter server. This
entry passes that address to squeezeslave.exe as a command-line
argument.

Then go to Start Settings Control Panel Administrative Tools
Servics and find the Squeezeslave service. Double-click it and set its
Startup type to Automatic.

Re: [slim] New Version?

2008-03-15 Thread hypatia

Working through the code (line numbers are against the Debian
SqueezeCenter 7.0 package) the relevant bit of the HTML in
HTML/Default/index.html is:

Code:

  202 [% IF newVersion %]
  203 span id=newVersion
  204 img src=[% webroot %]html/images/btn_info.gif/ [% newVersion %]
  205 /span
  206 [% END %]

It turns out, checking through the code, that this ends up being set in
squeezecenter-server:

Code:

  908 my $url  = http://;
  909 . Slim::Networking::SqueezeNetwork-get_server(update)
  910 . /update/?version=$VERSIONlang= .
Slim::Utils::Strings::getLanguage();
  911 my $http =
Slim::Networking::SimpleAsyncHTTP-new(\checkVersionCB, \checkVersionError);
  912
913 # will call checkVersionCB when complete
  914 $http-get($url);
  915

920 # called when check version request is complete
  921 sub checkVersionCB {
  922 my $http = shift;
  923
924 # store result in global variable, to be displayed by browser
  925 if ($http-{code} =~ /^2\d\d/) {
  926 $::newVersion = $http-content();
  927 chomp($::newVersion);

It eventually turns out that it is going to
http://update.squeezenetwork.com/update/?VERSION=7.0lang=en (at least
for me) and that URL is producing the string we both see. So there is
either a bug in whatever produces that page, or someone has jumped the
gun on an impending release.

do this in the registry, not the services control manager.

If it does exist (maybe you already did this for MusicIP?)

I'm actually a bit surprised that the SqueezeCenter install process
doesn't just -do- this - I guess it's a matter of being able to support

Please note: I tried setting a dependency as you suggest. However, it
does not work. OTOH my solution of starting the service Automatically

You're running Windows already, which means you're pretty much stuck
with the graphic interface.

 * Run VNC (I only have one permanently on PC, it runs SlimCenter? Now I
want it to be an audio source too)

VNC is a very minimal tool that allows you to control your
headless/always on PC from a non-headless/not-always-on PC. You must
control the thing someway, right? Remote Desktop is fine as well of course.

 * Run a Linux PC (learn a new OS for one app? I have children)

I didn't say you had to learn it, just run it. You don't have to be a
Linux expert to run a few programs. BTW, what you want runs fine under
Windows, it's just that *I* would prefer Linux for this application.
SqueezeCenter just runs better on it.

For my immediate requirements it looks like all I need to do is get
Squeezeslave to run as a service (or put up with the permanently open
dos box and the fact that it only starts at login).

I feel you have the wrong end of the stick on this whole headless thing.

It's all a bit immaterial at the moment though. Syncing Squeezeslave
appears to have destroyed the sound output from all my players.

That's Windows for ya ;)

Good luck.

Re: [slim] Getting album artwork from iTunes

2008-03-15 Thread grego . speiser

Faucette:
I think it is better to select all tracks of the album rather than just
the first track. I tried your method (cut and paste art on first track
only while using itunes) and, following rescan, the album art appeared
but squeezecenter now considers the first track to be a different album
than the rest.

Probably GRC's method found in the thread linked by b33k34 is better:
quote
My personal experience is that artwork automatically downloaded by
iTunes (I don't buy iTunes music - just use it to organise
independently ripped / downloaded files) is the problem. If it shows up
in iTunes but not in SC then a simple - albeit longwinded - ruse is to
copy the album art image from the bottom-right pane; select all the
tracks on the album and right-click (sorry Mac users) to select Clear
Downloaded Artwork; then paste the copied image back against all the
tracks. I understand this tags each track with the artwork which SC7
then sees. Do this gradually over a period of time, preferably with
some nice toons playing and a glass of red wine to hand.
end of quote

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, other fix suggestions?

I figured I would post a follow up to this as it may help others -
After testing many wires and talking with Lavry as well as what is

- they did some extensive testing and were not able to duplicate the

I have also been using a anti -static electricity spray -

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter 7.0 extremely slow

2008-03-15 Thread Clio

For what it's worth, I too had trouble with SqueezeCenter running
SLOWLY. I dl-d and installed twice yesterday and finally went back to
SlimServer 6.54 which works fine. [I've never posted here so I don't
know exactly what technical information is useful, so I'll just list
the basics on my setup] I am using a VelocityMicro PCX with dual 2.4ghz
processors, 2gb of RAM., XP Professional, and Firefox. I have around
5,000 cds, the majority of which are in FLAC, spread out over (5)
Harddrives (4 internal [3-Seagate, 1-Western Digital] and (1) external
[Western Digital, USB]) with a total of 2.6tb of storage space. I've
read that some people are having trouble with the initial library scan.
That wasn't a problem for me, the scan seemed to take roughly the same
as it used to using 6.54. Subsequent scans, however, were slow and they
didn't seem to be going anywhere. But the biggest problem for me was
that Squeezecenter was so slow loading. As I said, I downloaded and
installed twice, but I also rebooted a couple of extra times to see if
that would help. Each time I did, SqueezeCenter took a long time--much
longer than SlimServer--to start. This isn't a huge problem, but it was
annoying enough for me to switch back to 6.54. I didn't notice any
problems with my SB3, but I didn't mess around with it too much. So,
for now I am sticking with 6.54 and waiting for the bugs to be fixed. I
really liked the look of SqueezeCenter and I look forward to trying it
again in the future...

[slim] Problems Keeping SBC Connected via wireless

2008-03-15 Thread poulsen11

Ive been having a lot of problems getting my SBC to STAY connnected to
my Wifi network.

SBC=Squeezebox controller
SBR=Squeezebox receiver

Here is my original setup:
1 SBC
1 SBR
Squeezecenter 7.0 on a Windows XP computer with Windows Firewall ON and
ports opened specifically for squeezecenter. F-secure anti-virus on with
its built in firewall turned OFF.
WRT54GX2 wireless G linksys wireless router with WPA-TKIP/AES turned
on, no mac filtering or other special security turned on.

What works:

I can very reliably control the SBR with Squeezecenter.
Music plays perfectly with no skipping
I can set up the SBC and SBR over and over successfully, everything
connects properly and succeeds.
Light on SBR always indicates good connection to both music source and
wifi

What doesnt work:

Immediately after the setup sequence after factory reset of the SBC,
the SBC works reliably and can control the SBR well and the SBR plays
music perfectly.
Sometime between 1 and 5 minutes after setup the SBR starts having
connection problems with the network/music source. The SBR continues
to play music perfectly.
The SBC starts showing 'blue' on the wireless strength meter and i get
the 'try again' and 'choose music source' options with the message that
the 'squeezebox is having problems connecting to the network. Again,
the SBR continues to play music perfectly according to the last command
given it by the SBC.
I have plenty of signal strength on the SBC and the distance from the
wireless router does not matter, i have tried setting everything up in
one room and see the same problem.

I have setup my unit in 'bridged mode' with everything in the same room
and it works perfectly, but i dont want to run it in this mode, so i
went back and re-set everything up in full wireless mode.

After re-setting everything up again, I started looking at the network
information on the SBC under settingswireless networks(my network
name) to try to see if it was network connection problems. turns out
that about every minute or so the IP address field turns to 'nil' and
the status reads 'connecting'. This symptom was occurring with
everything in the same room (SBC, SBR, and wireless router).

This definitely pointed to the wireless connection as the problem.

I then took a shot in the dark and disabled wireless security
completely on the wireless router and did a factory reset again, going
through the setup process successfully. After doing this, everything
was working perfectly while the SBC was in the same room with
everything else.

Then i moved the SBC a couple of rooms away from the SBR and router
(about 30 feet) and things are STILL working perfectly.

Im going to continue to experiment with the security to see if maybe my
security type is the issue or if my security key is too long for the SBC
for some reason. My key was as long as you can use for WPA personal.

I so want this thing to just work. It is a fantastic product and i
cant wait to get 'settled in' with it.

I hope someone can comment/help, or that this helps someone else out
there having a problem.

Shortcuts have been a part of the Windows OS for a long time. Also this

[slim] SBC wake up computer

2008-03-15 Thread improvisato

Here's my setup:
SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 17793 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Server IP address: 192.168.1.100
Perl Version: 5.8.8 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt
Platform Architecture: 586

Here's what I want to happen:
When I set my computer to S3 sleep mode, I want it to go standby. If
I'm listening via SqueezeNetwork, I want my SBR to continue playing
like normal and have the computer stay asleep. If I use the SBC to
browse for an artist in SqueezeCenter, I want the SBC to wake up the
computer.

My network properties show three enable/disable controller settings:
- Wake on magic packet
- Wake on pattern
- WakeOnLAN from PowerOff

In messing around with various settings on enable/disable, I get two
outcomes:
- The computer goes to sleep but then immediately starts back up again
(this is obvisouly not what I want)
- The computer goes to sleep (this is partially what I want,
except)

I can't get the SBC to wake up the computer when I try to switch from
SqueezeNetwork back to SqueezeCenter.

Any ideas?

[slim] streaming via itunes

2008-03-15 Thread mikewilde

I have setup my squeezebox and it works fine when using the remote or
using the web interface to speakers in the lounge.

I also have itunes setup with an Airport Express to play from my itunes
directly to speakers in the kitchen.

What I would like to be able to do is to stream music to both rooms at
the same time. I know I can do that at the moment by using the two
different sources (itunes slimserver) but I would like to play the
same music at the same time to both speakers.

It doesn't matter to me whether the control is from itunes or the
slimserver interface.

Can anyone advise on whether this is possible and how to go about doing
it please?

Many thanks,

Mike

[slim] persistent web client possible?

2008-03-15 Thread wr420

Hi
I've searched around but haven't found any answers to this.
I'm streaming SC to a WM6 phone using the web interface and gsplayer.
(praying that the 2 folks working on c# clients have a compiled version
soon.)

The problem I am having is that every time I reconnect with gsplayer I
have to recreate the play list and hit play again etc.. in the web
interface.
SC must delete the current playlist for players when its looses
contact.
I know my phones IP changes often but the prefix is always the same and
it always shows gsplayer in the players name in the drop down list.

I'm wondering if it is possible to hardcode a player in SC, possibly
with a regex or wild cards so that SC keeps the playlist (and stream?)
alive even when the player disconnects and make it persistent so when I
reconnect I just have to connect to /stream.mp3.
The idea is that after some period of time and even is my clients IP
has changed, when it reconnects, SC would see the gsplayer string or IP
prefix (via regex) in the web player name and start playing so I do not
have to go into the web UI and pick music and press play everytime I
connect.
Kind of like my own radio station. I'm sure I could do this with
shoutcast etc.. but I'd like to stay with SC if possible.
Any and all ideas welcome
I'd also beta test for a WM6 client if anyone is interested.
ATT Tilt w/ cooked 6.1 ROM / SC7 final on linux
thanks

[slim] I'm an idiot (or at least clumsy)

2008-03-15 Thread bobkoure

I was looking at my music folder setup (home/music folder), and meant to

I had to wait for quite a long time for, well, -all- of my music to get
added to the playlist for the current player.
Anyone know of a way to cancel this process once it's begun? Or a way
to limit the number of tracks added in one click (even limiting it to
1000 would have been a big improvement.
Ah, well. No harm done - although it -does- seem to be the sort of
thing that might be a problem at a party if a guest clicked it.

[slim] Squeezebox can't connect to RSS feeds

2008-03-15 Thread buckleup

Hi everyone,

I once had RSS feeds coming into my squeezebox. Now i get the message
'Failed to retrieve RSS feed'

Also, I can no longer access any of the internet radio menu options
from the 'internet radio' menu. I get the message 'failed to parse
http.etc' when i select any of the menu items such as 'radioio or
'slim devices picks' or 'Live 365'.

However, I can access internet radio stations that have been saved as
playlists, i.e. 'Radio Paradise' or Soma FM stations. I can also
connect to the squeeze network and browse radio stations that way.

Can anybody suggest things to check to fix this situation?

Thanks,

running SoftSqueeze as is... it's just that it is entirely unnecessary

I have used VNC for years at work, but it is not much use for me when I
only have one PC at home! I think the confusion comes from my use of the
word headless. I was referring to using Softsqueeze in headless mode
(See title headless player). I was hoping that this meant using it
without any sort of graphical interface (and my doubt is illustrated by
the way I phrased it as a question in the post). Sorry it wasn't clear.
BTW. I now prefer to use Windows intergrated remote desktop (Terminal

That's it, I think we got confused about the headless issue. I thought
there was some switch to run SoftSqueeze without the GUI, though...
(still needs Java obviously) Try the -Dskins=headless

Re: [slim] I'm an idiot (or at least clumsy)

2008-03-15 Thread ebin

LOL, have done this myself a few times till I learned not to.
I usually go to the music computer and just restart it.

Yes this is a very big pain, especially with 60Gb of music.
I personally use the Music Folder option to play music due to the
fact that my sons have their own folder and their music tags are not as
neat as they should be and the constant changing of their music,
therefore creating havoc in the database searching features

Haven't done it for a while, but you are right, at a gathering
someone might think this would be a cool idea.

I am hoping that a future enhancements in the software would be to be
able to customize the menus as we can in the SB3.
This would allow us to remove items that we do not use (ie: internet
radio subscriptions, and play all), and remove items that an
unsuspecting newbie could screw up (ie: have you ever had a friend
get hold of you mp3 or phone and change the language or security
settings)

I have search the bug database and cannot find a request of this type,
but from the chatter on the forums, would assume the Slim boys are
looking at this for say SC7.1. (you do deserve a vacation first ;-)

Any feedback on this subject or possibly a link to proposed
enhancements in SC would be appreciated

Cheers

[slim] Controlling Playlist Playback

2008-03-15 Thread utowana

Gosh, I'm stumped and am pretty sure I have an easy one for someone.

Using SC 7 and can't figure out where I control the behavior of
playback of a playlist. I've created a playlist. I load it up in any
SB player, scroll down to one of the items in the playlist and click
play. My goal is that it play the entire list from that point to the
end. For example, a playlist of 10 selections. Start playing on track
3 and I want it to play 3-10. Instead, it plays only track 3 and stops.

Must be simple, but I just don't see in SC 7 where that control is
taking place.

Tips? Thanks.

I've got some truble after installing the new SqueezeCenter. I've

but then my old 6.5.4 SlimServer would be good too ...

I've deinstalled SC7 and installed again, but the symptoms are the
same.

Any Advice?

Woohoo. Information in the current Wiki is pretty good - usability is
not.

Sign me up.

One small comment - I hope that the layout of the new Wiki won't be as
constrained/shoehorned into the Slim Devices site layout, which works
very poorly for the Wiki. My main issues with the current layout are

- the huge left-hand nav column wastes a lot of page space
- too small a font make reading difficult
- lack of line-spacing makes reading _really_ difficult
- the inability to flow to the browser width makes tables difficult to
use

for each click to do something) and set one of my radio stations
there to play - which finally interrupted the process.
Seems like all that's needed is for the clear button to appear
earlier on in the process - and for clicking to mean stop loading any
in-process-of-loading files and then clear what's in this player's
playlist.

And yeah, I think I've learned to carefully avoid that button as
well... :-)

this problem, have changed nightlies regularly, using the current prod

[slim] Potentially stupid question: how do I skip Fwd and Back?

2008-03-15 Thread arainert

I feel like a real idiot here but I can't seem to get the Duet
controller to hope Fwd and Back within a playlist. Hitting those
buttons just starts the track that's playing over again.

Anyone else experience this? Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks!

Thanks for the link. It seems to focus on FFD/REW in regards to scubbing
rather than skipping from song to song. Is that not possible on the
Duet?

Re: [slim] Wiki migration help

2008-03-15 Thread Triode

This is probably going to mess up wiki radio in some way... Will the
old wiki be kept going for a while until we know what impact it has.
(currently we can fetch an html index to get all the ompl attachments
to a wiki page which we turn into a player menu)

I actually think some form of lightly moderated radio station list is
the best way to maintain details of community submitted radio links.
So lets see what the new wiki will do for us...

Re: [slim] squeezebox duet controller

2008-03-15 Thread Zaragon

I'm assuming that your Transporter is wired to the network. In which
case a simple answer is to just get hold of a ethernet switch and
wireless access point and site them with the Transporter. If you use
the same wireless set-up SSID, encryption and keys as your main
wireless then the controller would just attach to which ever AP is
strongest. Note that the controller doesn't roam between APs but even a
simple power down and up again would be enough to get it to switch if
you take it upstairs and downstairs.

You'd also have the advantage of being able to use a laptop down there
as well.

Just asking, are you sure you have more than one song in the now playing
playlist?

Pressing play on a track only adds that track, you must press on an
album for an album to be added.

Re: [slim] Newbie said I dont Get it... is JIve...

2008-03-15 Thread Zaragon

At least for the moment. The infra-red LED is there and it can be used
to emulate a standard Squeezebox remote. All it takes is a plug-in.

If someone were to do it though (along the lines of the IR-Blaster) it
would probably be of only limited functionallity not least because the
SC doesn't have too many buttons.

I wouldn't recommend getting it though if you were only thinking of it
as a possible future universal remote. If you want it for its other
features and possible future remote use is icing then go ahead...

Re: [slim] Can't get duet receiver to connect to squeezecenter through remote

2008-03-15 Thread fgallina

Hi Jim,

That was a good idea, and it worked. I was able to connect to my server
in bridged mode...but what does that mean? I guess I need to start from
scratch with my router config?

At any rate, even if bridged mode isn't ideal, it's better than nothing
while I figure out what's going on with my router. I'm excited that it's
at least partly working now!!

Thanks for all your help so far,

Frank

Re: [slim] List albums by ... option has no effect?

2008-03-15 Thread smc2911

I know in the past I had grouping working properly when I used the
BAND tag rather than the ALBUMARTIST tag and I suspect that in the
past the ALBUMARTIST tag wasn't actually used by SlimServer. While
SqueezeCenter does read and display ALBUMARTIST, I suspect that it is
not being used for album grouping. There are some bug reports that seem
related to this:

Or there's an option to add all the tracks of the album if you select a
single track. My wife likes it that way, I like it the other :)

When you're on the Now Playing screen pressing the centre button will
show you the current playlist. If there's more than one track on there
you can move back and forth with the arrow buttons as you'd expect.

Pressing ff or rew quickly skips to the next or prev track. Holding
down the button gets to the more complicated scanning features.

really have the time for that right now (this is my work PC too [I work

Can the controller control SB 3's? Also can you switch between the SB
3's on your LAN?

I have a Speedtouch 780WL, so basically I only need to enable that? My
SB3 are wired only, but I think the Slimserver + controller will
communicate over the LAN anyway to the host software?
