Would it be possible to forward links to the old wiki over to the new one ? For example, I found this link on a third party site today: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SBRFrontButtonAndLED I should be reasonably straight forward to put a page at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi that presented the user with a page indicating that the wiki had changed and to give them a link to: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SBRFrontButtonAndLED (with text explaining that the link might not work) Or alternatively just a simple Apache rewrite rule to forward onto the new wiki ? -- andynormancx andynormancx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17417 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The few album audio preview is an interesting idea, but again my player can start playing music the normal way with a few tenths of a second when playing back the normal way, so I'm not convinced that even if you were implementing that you would need any caching. As to preferences and ranking, if the Controller is connected to the server then the server is the right place to store those. If it isn't connected the the server then it is pretty much dead in the water... Most of the things that it would make sense to cache (that might not already be cached) are relatively small bits of data. Given that my Controller has something like 24MB of RAM free that would be the best place to cache anything like that. -- andynormancx andynormancx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17417 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47695 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Pippin, have you seen SimplifyMedia in action on an iPhone/iPod Touch? I know that this has nothing to do with using Squeezecenter but it does actually allow streaming audio on the iPhone. I have sat in San Francisco and streamed music (mp3) from my home server in Hong Kong via my iPod Touch with no problems. Re: [slim] Someone from Slimdevices please try
Well the problem is that somehow they got the wrong idea about how Soundcheck and replay gain work together. They don't. Unless they look into it and find out for themselves I don't think that I'm to be believed. I hope they do because they make great products and to have such a simple mistake make a part of the program unusable is a shame. I posted here to bring it up and was "educated", I tried to use bugzilla but had problems for some reason. I got tired of it and emailed an engineer (if thats the wrong title, I apologize) and was told that they knew about it and to post in bugzilla even though I had said I had problems doing that. Then it hit me, I paid for this device and I'm trying to help get something fixed. I get talked down to here and told to jump through hoops by probably a too busy guy. So I'm done and I'll wait and see some more or just either run album gain only or erase some tags from 13,000 files. -- Nonreality *-If the rule you followed brought you to this, what good is the rule.-* Nonreality's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47671 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Wrong default browser
OK. Thanks, that reference didn't fix the problem directly but gave me a clue. My computer didn't know how to open a .URL file (which SqueezeCenter was calling. In Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types I located the URL file type and saw that it was (somehow) set to open with Wordpad. I changed that to Firefox and exited. I then checked that opening a computer file with a .URL extension did in fact open up in Firefox. NOW When I open SqueezeCenter it DOES start in Firefox BUT all I get is a dark grey background with a few words in blue (Help||Settings) a couple in black (background, 9.09) and "Loading SqueezeCenter..." in white in the center and it all stalls. Learn how it works. get SqueezeCenter working on it. Yes, you can use any computer with a browser to control it, including tablets or laptops. I used a laptop, to the near complete exclusion of the remotes for my SqueezeBox and Transporter. If you are having it built, which is actually a pretty good idea, I'd go ahead and spring for a real Adaptec RAID controller. They work better, and are much more robust than the software stuff. And they are not really that much more expensive. Nearly any modern CPU will work, a low end dual core AMD is more than enough and very cheap these days. The OS doesn't really matter. I would not recommend learning Linux and SqueezeCenter and WiFi networking all at once. If you know Windows well, you can use it. But Ubuntu is very approachable and will run better than Windows on the same hardware than most Windows systems. Remember, RAID is not backup. You might actually be better off skipping RAID altogether and just have some external disks that you manually back up once a month. -- pfarrell Pat http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html pfarrell's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=200 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47243 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] can SB do lossless FLAC 5.1?
I've started trying to rip audio from a few DVD-A discs that I have. Seem to have managed to rip the 24/96 stereo mix OK. Also ripped the 24/96 5.1 mix OK. The stereo mixs streams to my SB3 OK. The 5.1 mix doesn't -guess no surprise. Just wont play -thought maybe i could pass SPDIF to a surround amp but even if it had played I guess would have been no good as not DT or DD. Is there anything that would allow me to encode the 5.1 WAVs to DTS (at a sensible costI dont have many DVD-A discs!!) As a DVD-A it also carries the DVD-V Dolby Digital mix so I guess this would be the next best option to stream to SB3 & feed SPDIF to my surround amp, although so far I haven't managed to rip this for some reasonwhere I've had no problem using the documented methods here on the forum to extract from my normal DVD music videos. -- ntom SB3,Perpetual Technologies P1-A/P3-A,Naim82 + 4xNaim135, Martin Logan SL3 ntom's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3197 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43025 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Displaying "comment" tag from FLAC files in SqueezeCenter
More thanks, MC. I'll try out SC 7.0.1 or maybe even 7.1. I actually tried to update, last night, but, the reinstall kept hanging. So, I wound up having to roll back to 7.0. For some reason, when trying to update, SqeezeTray.exe won't remove fully. I'll try again, tomorrow (perhaps by going into the Processes box (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and making sure that Tray.exe and anything else Squeeze related has truly been uninstalled and is not running). And, yes, I thought that the comment field would simply display automatically in the web interface and controller when viewing track details. But, it just won't show. As for on the player, I used to be able to view comments via iTunes, also in track details. Now, that I've gone FLAC and, thus, am no longer running through iTunes, I'll take a look at the plug-in you mentioned (assuming that I manage to get 7.0.1 installed and everything else going). If everything fails, I may just take you up on your generous offer to view one of my files. But, for the time being, I don't want to waste your time, so, I'll try the fixes you mentioned, first. -- brucesee brucesee's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10260 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47648 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Can I create playlists within SC without a SB?
"Usual" operation isn't always apparent to the new user. Open SoftSqueeze on the desktop. You can minimize it if you want. Open SqueezeCenter in a browser. If you use Firefox, you may not get the "right panel" showing the player. The easiest way to do this is to click the "rightmost of the left group of icons" at the top of the player... the one to the right of the question mark.. SoftSqueeze is a SOFTWARE player that acts just like SB hardware, except it plays through your PC's sound card.. Remember, you have a few different places to adjust volume other than the SS volume... speaker volume and channel input volume are controlled by winders. -- pski pski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15574 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47685 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

SO, if this is correct: 1. When using the Squeezebox and the standard remote connected to SqueezeNetwork I get the scan line and do not hear anything. It just kind of flashes the screen. When connected to Squeeze centre it does work 2. I can't make it do anything using the Squeeze Remote on any of my device using SN. On Squeeze Centre is starts but it will not stop - despite pushing play. I have to push Pause and then Pause again -- brdbointx brdbointx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9833 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47706 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks. I have no idea why you cannot view the Comment field in your tracks. If you want to stick a (short) example file somewhere where I can pick it up I'll have a look. Otherwise just to quickly correct something above. The great thing about the Controller is that it shows the comment field in Track Details by default and the Comment text fills the whole screen, so no need for horizontal scrolling. The Comment field shows by default when you view track details in the SqueezeCenter web gui. There is no configuration required. To get the Comment field to show on your player display is more interestingand how you do it depensds upong what you want you may want the Now Playing screen saver to display it for instance. The main thing is to add the Commment fields in SC/Settings/Interface/Title Format. Once you've done this you can choose to have it display in your player. Michael Hergers wonderful MusicInfo plugin increases your options for Now Playing/Comment etc and will increase the possibilities open to you. I use MP3Tag for tagging. I think it's pretty perfect. Your mileage > may vary, of course, but dont try running on a 1GHz P3; it just wont > work. To save a bit of money you may want to go with an AMD processor. The Intel Core 2 Duos would work very well with such a large CPU requirement but as they're the current performance champs, they come at a premium. If performance depends only on processor speed as inguz states, you'll need a middle-of-the-line AMD processor. Compare prices carefully, AMD is priced close to Intel near the middle-of-the-line and an Intel processor will have a performance advantage. In terms of RAM, the more the better. SC performance will depend greatly on available RAM. Ordinarily 1 GB would be fine but with your large library and inguz go with 2 GB at least. Other than some learning time, there would be no advantage going with Windows Server over Linux here. Linux manages RAM better and is generally lighter on resources so your CPU and RAM goes further but unfortunately note the performance hit inguz has on Linux. > I should probably add that I know near nothing of Linux but am good at > learning by doing and of the two key guys at the computer shop, one > uses a simple Squeezebox system and the other has expertise with > Ubuntu, so I'm not alone blundering in the dark. You have a very nice GUI but once you get comfortable, you may want to get familiar with doing things via the CLI. With SC, this is very easy - there's not much to do via the CLI, most administration is over the web interface. Once you get familiar enough with the CLI, you can gain additional performance by going with Ubuntu Server and doing away with the GUI entirely. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47243 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Receiver and Controller now shipping!
I received the Controller the other day. Thank you for selling it individually so quickly after the Duet launch. I'm very impressed with all the features it is packing, and look forward to its evolution. However, I do have one minor gripe that I am wondering about: the high gloss black finish seems to scratch very easily, so easily that gently placing it in the charger, or removing it from the charger, can cause minor scratching. The mat black finish seems to show finger prints too, even when handled with very clean hands. Are there any plans to offer a plastic laminate cover, or maybe silicon skin thing a la iPod case? maybe a model with aluminum case for a bit more $? Or is it possible that I got unlucky and received an early production model for which the polymer science wasn't quite perfected? Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated. In all fairness, the Controller looks great, and generally seems to be a hearty device. The one-handed usability is nice too, especially considering any comparable solution / competitors product requires two hands to operate. -- ninthsrw2 ninthsrw2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17531 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47354 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you do have a router, don't forget to port forward the same ports as usual , the ones you had to open in your firewall to get SC to work at home. If you don't have an fixed IP you can use some kind of Dynamic DNS service, either from the router or PC (whatever fits you setup). You migth have to restart Softsqueeze while your server is shifting IP. And password protection IS working with the duet now. A nice extra is Wake On Lan over internet, so that you can boot the music server from the internet. but this is highly dependent on the hardware involved, computer, router etc. It is not possible for everyone to do this. Re: [slim] Can I create playlists within SC without a SB?
Sounds like you're on the right road, but have you installed SoftSqueeze? I think you have to have a player attached for the right panel to perform correctly. So, if you haven't already, open up Softsqueeze and get it started playing some music. Building a playlist can be done from either the Web UI, SoftSqueeze, the SB3 remote (when you get it), or even a Controller (which neither of us have...yet). My preference is to use the Fishbone Skin in the Web UI and build my playlists there, but try a couple of different ways to find your favorite. How is that accomplished? > > Also, I would love to be able to stream to an iPhone. Is that possible > and if so, how? > > ANy assisatance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. General steps.. assuming you have a cable/adsl connection (and winders) and that your SC machine is connected to the cable/dsl box WITHOUT a router/wireless access point in-between... Most cable setups give you a "static" (unchanging IP address) and many phone companies DSL automatically give you a "static" address when you have higher speeds. 1. at the home computer, open a browser and go to www.whatismyip.com. Write down this "external IP address." 2. open a command window and type ipconfig write down the IP address and the default gateway (assuming you are on the machine running SC.) 3. in a browser window key http://default gateway address Mine is http://192.168.0.111 This should display the configuration screen for your cable/dsl modem. This is the tricky part because there are so many different models. I've used Netopia and Westell (ATT) modems so I'll give you them as an example.. 4. You will be looking for NAT setup. In my modems you go to expert mode/configure/NAT. BACKGROUND: what we want to do is to tell the modem that when it sees business from the "outside" world (internet/work) on a particular PORT number, forward that traffic to the SC machine. There are two ports involved, TCP 9000 and TCP 3483. "Default" behavior for these modems is to reject ANY inbound traffic from the internet that hasn't been requested by a computer on the "inside". This is a good thing, preventing the outside world from seeing the network in your home. In my netopia, I have to "define" a service (as port forwarding, range of ports) from ports 9000 through 9000 to base port 9000. Then I do the same for port 3483. When I tell the modem to "enable" these services, it asks which computer address I want them to be sent to. Here you enter the IP address from the ipconfig screen (the address of the machine that is running SC.) Some modems may let you fill this info into a form rather than having a two-step process and some modems will show the names of the machines in addition to IP addresses when you select the target. 5. go here http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php and download lame. This is the code that will compress your music on-the-fly as you play it remotely. Put LAME.EXE in C:\program files\squeezecenter\server\bin\mswin32-x86-multi-thread You don't need the .DLL version. You'll know it's the right place because it will have alac.exe, flac.exe, sox.exe, etc. 6. go to the outside world and open a browser, keying the address: http://:9000 where is the "external IP address" from the earlier step. The http:// is very important if you are using a newer version of Internet Explorer because they don't make a guess about which protocol to use on non-standard ports (like 9000) If everything has been done right, you should see SC. If you don't, it's possible that port 9000 is blocked by your IT people. Tough luck. Try again from a public WiFi to see if you've got the configuration right. 7. go to extras and install SoftSqueeze. 8. things may be ok at this point, but I would rename the SoftSqueeze player and change it's Audio settings to about 128K. The Lame quality setting you use depends on how fast your SC machine is ... 9. advanced diddling: run SoftSqueeze. open SC, select the SoftSqueeze player and go to HELP/Server and Network Health. Pick a speed and the results will be shown on the SoftSqueeze display and in SC. This is testing the outbound speed of your home broadband connection. If you have a very fast connection at home, you can push this up but REMEMBER... you'll also be sucking bandwidth from your employer's inbound connection so it might be better to be reasonable (and not attract attention...) -- pski pski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15574 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47684 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi Shredder I assume you want to use Squeezecenter. You can stream to any "streamable" device by connecting to the http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3 If you want softsqueeze or the stream to work at the office, you either need to set up a VPN or SSH tunnel. I have both a SB3 and Duet which connect to SqueezeCenter running on a Windows Home Server. Everything has been working fine. I next installed TwonkyMedia, a streaming media server, on the same Server. Of course, it wants to use port 9000, which is also the default for SqueezeCenter. I couldn't figure out how to change the port setting in TwonkyMedia, so I decided to change the SqueezeCenter port to 9010 in the settings menu. Change worked fine, I restarted the server, and tested things. My SB3 sees the server now wihtout any issues. The Duet, however, doesn't seem to be able to see the server. I tried redoing the setup by pushing the button on the front of the SQR until it flashed red, and going through setup, but the controller acts like it can't see SqueezeCenter any more. I am working on an app based on the "official" iPhone SDK and the license agreement does not allow me to build an app for a jailbroken iPhone then. So you will have to be patient until Apple releases the 2.0 firmware. On the technical side: All the "NowPlaying" stuff is pretty straightforward since this is JavaScript anyway and uses the CLI commands to communicate with the server. Browse pages are more difficult, here the CLI does not support as much as the TemplateToolkit but the "core" functionality will be there and Erland and one of the features of the plugin part of iPeng is, that plugins can add stuff here, too. -- pippin --- see iPeng at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46296 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Displaying "comment" tag from FLAC files in SqueezeCenter
I populate the Comments tag of all my flac files with Reviews and Artist Bios (usually taken from www.allmusic.com) and I can see them clearly in the SqueezeCenter web gui when I view the details of any track. I don't know if you know this but you can configure the Squeezebox such that the comments tag scrolls automatically across the screen. You can also view the contents of the Comment tag simply in the Duet Controller. Personally I use the Controller 99% of the time and find the the ability to simply read the reviews and artist's biography of the album I'm listening to very useful. Flac file should use Orbis tags. Re: [slim] Not quite ready for prime time
My experience is that internet radio on the SB works as well as can be expected given the nature of the medium. Difficulties encountered typically surround problems with the radio feed itself, including server load issues, URL changes, and general internet connectivity issues. None of these relate to the SC or SB handling of the feed. I myself prefer internet radio as a "fire and forget" solution to hearing new music, but I also understand that it is a relatively new medium with inherent issues. When one channel stops working for one of the above reasons, I know to switch. If no channel works, I know to revert to my music collection. If that doesn't work, then I consider whether or not SC is the issue. If there is a specific problem that you are running into with internet radio, perhaps a better description of the issue would lend itself to a solution. Finally, I wonder if "prime time" is really applicable to any digital streaming audio device at this time. I cannot stand the thought of a physical media collection, but is a digital collection typical these days? For those that it is, the concept of streaming it over networks is still not a given in my experience. -- ds2021 ds2021's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10078 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47660 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There are several "kinds" of tags (Ape, FLAC, MP3, Vorbis), and there's no general agreement between products (dbPowerAmp, MP3Tag WinAmp, SqueezeCenter) as to which one takes precedence. So, if Ape tags have precedence (which I'm pretty sure is the case with SC), and you have some Ape tags and some MP3 tags, the only MP3 tags that will "show through" are the ones not "covered" by matching Ape tags. On another tagger/player there might be a different order of precedence so you'd see a different set of tags first. Even MP3Tag won't tell you when this has happened - but you can set it to delete all but one kind of tag and to write only one kind of tag, which solves the problem. There may also be an option to write only one kind of tag when converting in dbPowerAmp's Converter, but I haven't found it. -- bobkoure bobkoure's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14646 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47648 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Upgrade Slimnas
Hi Michael, KDF helped me. The problem was that the PAR_TEMP environment variable was missing so plugins based on the PAR.pm from CPAN cannot create a temp file in the /tmp directory. After adding PAR_TEMP /tmp to the .profiles file in the etc directory and then reboot the server the plugins worked. Would it be possible to add that environment variable during installation of SlimNAS or SC? /Kuben72 -- Kuben72 Kuben72's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15308 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43774 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Several plugins does not work on SlimNAS
Yep. It worked. In the etc directory I edited .profile and added PAR_TEMP /tmp and then rebootede the server. After that DynamicPlayList was loaded as it should. Thanks very much for your help. I will try to get Michael Herger interested in this, so he can change the SlimNAS installation and add the environment variable during the installation. /Kuben72 -- Kuben72 Kuben72's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15308 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47564 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
