Re: [slim] Audio Problems - Softsqueeze 3.3 on Mac Leopard OSX 10.5

2008-10-23 Thread Malor

I think it must be a bug in Java. I now get scratchy sound in the right
speaker, on a Mac Pro, with every version of Softsqueeze I've tried,
back to the version that came with 6.5.4. I've tried at least 3.4,
3.6, and 3.7, and 3.4 worked great for me for a LONG time, so this is a
recent change. I thought it was the recent Softsqueezes causing the
problem, but it isn't.

I think this is a Mac bug, but if you folks can find an easy
workaround, that would be wonderful.

Thanks!

Certainly, I warned you I hadn't tried it though...

Don't buy an expensive card but experiment with cheap ones or get a

$150 (for the SB Receiver) isn't that cheap. I'd rather get a $50 sound

That's a lot cheaper than the 1st generation soundblaster I once bought ;)

Re: [slim] Artwork Display

2008-10-23 Thread Michael Herger
I think there could be allot of potential for SqueezeJS. I hope to see
 more its development and documentation.

And I hope it will see more interest by the community. I'm glad you
created some buzz about it ;-).

I like the idea of showing track title without the track number. Right
now, when poll this data, some of my tracks show up as 1-7 TrackTitle
for example. Maybe, it is the tagging my MP3's.

As mentioned in the other mail the SqueezeJS.UI.Title() component does
combine disc#, track# and title into one. That's why I've added RawTitle()
which will return the title string only, without the numbers.

How would you query for paused or stop state? I know, I should be
asking in the developer forum but it goes with this thread. Again,
 appreciate your help.

playerStatus.mode is one of play, pause, stop. You'll find a lot of this
information in the SC CLI documentation. SqueezeJS uses a lot of those
commands, playerStatus is basically a subset of the status command.

I can't get this to work as expected so some advice please.

What I'm doing is opening the web UI and under Internet Radio opening
Tune In URL. Paste in the URL and the station plays on the SB3 but not
on Softsqueeze (any ideas?).

Then I add to favourites in order to do it again from the SB3 itself
but it just shows the URL, of course. Can this be edited or added to to
show the real name of the station so that I can build a list of several
jazz stations?

Tried reading the manual but after 3 years of using the Squeezebox this

Re: [slim] Any Video on the horizon?

2008-10-23 Thread autopilot

woodhome;352218 Wrote:
Thanks for the input, and I'm sorry if I touched a sore spot Autopilot.
I'll wind up resolving the video problem somehow, and spending some $ to
do it. Like lots of people, there's no separation anymore between my
audio equipment and my TV/Video player. It's all one system. Slim
Devices are a great product and I'd rather have a system where I know
everything will play nicely together. So if you're listening product
 development...

It not a sore point, i would just prefer to see Slim Devices focus on
what they are proven to be good at. Most all-in-one devices tend to be
jack of all trades, master of none. Horrible interfaces, watered down
redundant feature sets which require a TV to operate and overly
complicated - because they are trying to be too many things to too many
people. Another reason I much prefer seperation to because i don't like
to have all my eggs in one basket. For example, i have prefer a
seperate mobile phone, sat nav, camera and MP3 player - They all do
there jobs better than an all-in-one devices, and if a better sat nav
comes on the market i can upgrade that and not have to also buy a new
phone and MP3 player which i am happy with. It would be cheaper too.

It's also a mistake to just think you can just bolt on video playback.
It might be fairly easy to bold audio playback to a video streamer
(because they already do it in a way), but not the other way around -
and especially with the Slim Devices model of doing things. Video is a
whole new ball game, of HDMI etc. There is no way you could really add
video to Squeezecenter and the Squeezeboxes themselves - which are
thin clients, powered by a server - would need much much more power (HD
decoding takes a lot more processing power). So although i guess it
could be done, the Slim Device ethos would need to change, i and
would not like to see such a radical change to a winning formula.

Also, the added development overhead could be detrimental. Squeezebox
owners enjoy frequent software updates and new features. If they
started doing video work too, you could be sure the updates and new
feures would be less frequent. It would also be in danger of quickly
becoming bloatware, like iTunes has, and Squeezecenter is arguably
already more power hungry than some poeople would like. Let companies
concentrate on what they are good at - Lexus make nice cars but would
they make great Motorcycles too? They might do, sure, but it's probably
best they let other people do that.

That said, they may well already have something like the
SqueezeboxVideo(tm) on the drawing board, they certainly have a
tallented development team. But i would personally rather see it as a
seperate line rather than some multimedia mish mash. But maybe thats
just me.

when a scan is done with Resample Artwork set in the performance
settings, viewing album art in the web interface and consequently also
on a Philips Pronto with the SlimPronto module, is very slow to non
functional.
When a scan is done with Resize Artwork, cover art loads in seconds.

A scan with Resample Artwork set takes +-13 hours.
A scan with Resize Artwork set takes +-1 hours.

So what is happening here? Does album art, either resampled or resized,
get cached on the server? If it's not cached, why does it take 13 hours
to resample artwork?

why does it take 13 hours to resample artwork?

AFAIK because the ReadyNAS doesn't have a floating point unit.

Been a while since I looked at this. In truth, this issue turned into a
showstopper for me and I've ended up using itunes and the iphone/ipod
remnote app instead. As I'm using softsqueeze, this works fine for me.

From memory, the problem you are having is that the ReadyNas CPU is
particularly poor at running the resampling code

This is compounded by the fact that the initial scan only creates
caches for some of the artwork sizes used in the controller and the web
interface - the rest has to happen on the fly, which kill the user
experience.

Don't know whether any of my suggestions above were taken into account
in later releases, but to be honest, I don't really care at this stage.
The slim duo is packed up along with other redundant kit. I would peddle
it in ebay if it wasn't for the fact that it's got scratches all over
the back from where the controller was actually taken out of the
cradle.

Nice idea - bad implementation

CA's product has kept my PCs out of trouble and it has a rather light

I've recently tried OneCare and so far I rather like it. It does

[slim] WMA support- what does it transcode to?

2008-10-23 Thread milosz

As I understand it, Squeezeboxes can't decode WMA streams. To play WMA
files, SqueezeCenter transcodes them on the fly and sends the result
streaming out to the SB player(s) on the LAN or WLAN.

My question is- WHAT does it transcode WMA to? I am using WMA lossless
files - does SqueezeCenter transcode this to a lossless format for
streaming to the players? If so, what format?

I noticed that with transcoded formats like WMA, you can't fast
forward the music. Will this ever change in future releases?

Also- will there ever be native support of WMA in Squeezebox players?
Seems like you could do this in firmware.

Going to Settings-Advanced-Software Update gave a message that there

Reinstalled SC7.2 and all is good again.

Re: [slim] Artwork resizing - could it be managed better?

2008-10-23 Thread cwinson

I'm not sure that's the case - most of the NAS boxes out there are
stripped down Linux boxes which should be perfectly capable of running
a media server. Of course it depends on what the media server is trying
to do.

The issue for me around this whole episode was that ReadyNAS was
purported to be capable of running the software. It wasn't immediately
apparent that this came with big caveats. The option to run with
resized artwork was not workable for me - the artwork looked awful.

I should note that I also ran for a period of time with the software
running on a full PC. I still found the performance and responsiveness
of the controller disappointing - I guess I have high expectations...

Of course, that was when it was able to get a wireless signal..

My question is- WHAT does it transcode WMA to? I am using WMA lossless

streaming to the players? If so, what format?

I noticed that with transcoded formats like WMA, you can't fast
forward the music. Will this ever change in future releases?

Also- will there ever be native support of WMA in Squeezebox players?
Seems like you could do this in firmware.

AFAIK wma can be transcoded by SC to mp3, flac or wav - you can choose!

That's a popular opinion, but it's fast becoming old fashioned.
Especially with mobile devices it's a giant advantage to have only one
device in your pocket instead of two. I used to carry a PDA (HP100LX)
and a phone around and they were a major hassle to carry arround in your
pocket. Now, I have a smartphone that does the job of two. Much better.
It also has a GPS receiver which I would use if the software wasn't so
terrible. If the software were good enough I'd use it. The fact that
many smartphones are so bad at being MP3 players is due to terrible
software. The competition of the iPhone will soon force phone makers to
improve their mp3 playing ability. It's just not that hard to do.

I wouldn't mind a video squeezebox, but I suspect it's pretty hard to do
right and integrate it properly with the current software.

My problem with a video device is i woul also want it to do TV as well.
And from there it gets really complicated.

I did actually come up with a potential model SD/Logitec could use when
i was noodling about last night. It would mean that TV streaming was
possible but also wouldn't be a requirement for the basic unit. It
would also retail the slim client philosophy.

It's probably going a little out with the scope of this thread to start
detailing it, but I will if someone *really* wants me to :)

(btw, it could quite easily just be a load on nonsense in my head, but

Re: [slim] What sound card should I use to get accurate sync between SB3 and SoftSqueeze?

iPhone;352329 Wrote:
Yeah, I guess it’s mainly a quality issue for me. Not the quality of
SoftSqueeze, but of a PC sound card and PC speakers. I spend so much
time in my office in front of a PC when the markets are open, I felt I
had to have a small system in the office that was above the sound
available from a soundcard and PC speakers.

I agree - I spend too much time in front of PCs. But I don't work at
home, and I obviously can't lug a real stereo with me from client to
client. The iPod has to suffice during business hours. But weekends and
evenings are when I want the music all over the house - just not enough
time to justify really beefing up what's in the office.

iPhone;352329 Wrote:
Speaking of computers, has anybody checked to see if it makes a
difference if softSqueeze is running on the same PC as SC? Does running
SC on a server and softSqueeze on another PC help or hurt the sync
 issue?

To be more specific about my setup, I have SC running on an ancient
Windows Server 2003 SP1 box with a P4 940, 4GB RAM, and all the FLACs
are on a 4x200GB SATA RAID5 set. The server does lots of stuff -
Exchange, domain controller (no private messages about why you
shouldn't co-locate DCs and Exchange, please) web server, SQL server,
etc, etc. It's not just for SC.

My desktop is a Windows Vista SP1 x64 box, Core 2 Duo E6750, and ASUS
P5K-E motherboard (including onboard sound, ADI AD1988B chipset) 4GB
RAM. So, OK, I have a goodly amount of memory, but I have not invested
in any kind of super fast sound card. Both machines are on the same
gigabit switch? That might make a difference?

The point I am driving at is that the sound card, in my experience, is
probably not affecting things. Unless my specific crappy onboard sound
card is the magic bullet for SoftSqueeze synchronization (probability:
low) then there's definitely other variables at play.

iPhone;352329 Wrote:
Also when I have run softSqueeze on the office PC, I have seen some odd
behavior. It locks up or crashes every time I play Acoustic Alchemy

Hedges CDs. And now looking up both of the songs, they both happen to
be track 6. Wonder what that is all about?

Track #6 is the track of the beast. ;-)

In general, most people experience better performance (stronger signal
at longer distance) using the new N routers in G mode. I believe
this has to do with advancements in technologies involved in wifi
antenna design etc. A stronger signal at longer distance can equate to
more bandwidth, but you will never exceed the G standards of 54mbps. It
may prove useful if you currently have trouble spots in your wifi
environment, and the cost of a N router is probably not much more than
a after market high performance G antenna.

I found that the G+MIMO router I upgraded to (from vanilla 802.11G) made
a big difference. Even though I was getting 75% wireless strength, my

Changing to the MIMO router which had Auto channel switching made a

Of course, I'm sure the neighbours weren't as impressed that my signal
strength was blowing their network away. But I got there first :-)

2. What has been the success of using repeaters with the duet and the

[slim] 7.2.1 - 'Can't connect to SqueezeCenter' keeps repeating

2008-10-23 Thread Richie

If a turn on a Squeezebox and the server isn't running I get the
following message:

Can't connect to SqueezeCenter.
Left to go back, right to try again.

This message keeps repeating at approximately 10 second intervals until
I turn the server on. Since I have at least one Squeezebox plugged into
a power strip with my TV and hi-fi, the Squeezebox gets turned on along
with the other equipment. I don't always have SqueezeCenter running if
I'm not going to listen to music. This message soon gets very
irritating so I have to kill the power to the Squeezebox.

I'm sure that previous versions of Slimserver / SqueezeCenter used to
make the the Squeezebox screen go blank after the message had been
shown once.

Should I raise a bug or is this now the intended behaviour?

I understand that Verizon, in the middle of the night, reguraly pushes

[slim] problems with remote streaming with 7.2.1

2008-10-23 Thread maggior

I upgraded to 7.2.1 last night and all appeared fine. Today I came into
work and attempted to put on some music. It played for a few minutes,
but then stopped abrubtly. So I started it again...and then it stopped
after a few minutes.

I have 2 servers running, so I turned one of the off to ensure it
wasn't some sort of networking conflict. No difference.

I reverted to 7.2 on one of my servers and it's been playing for about
1/2 hour with no issues.

So, I think this issue is specific to 7.2.1.

Does anybody else use this functionality? Has anybody else encountered
this problem?

There's one reason that option exists at all: ReadyNAS. We only

why does it take 13 hours to resample artwork?

AFAIK because the ReadyNAS doesn't have a floating point unit.

 --

 Michael

AH! No go for ReadyNAS and artwork on demand resampling then. But
what does it do for 13 hours then? It must be resampling and caching
the resampled images somewhere. What size are they and where are they
being cached to?

I turned on debug for artwork and noticed that SlimPronto requests
64x64 images to display a coverart collage. Squeezecenter then resizes
from the original folder.fpg of 500x500 to 64x64. Now if these 64x64
images were already cached then there would be no need for this on
demand resize. Images would just be retrieved from cache. So we could
have resampling enabled and the only downside would be the long scan
time.

I also noticed that the web interface requests 100x100 and those also
get resized and resampled on demand.

HANG IN THERE! How we can we help you solve your issues unless you tell
us what they are and what your set up is? That way you're contributing
to improvement and learning along the way. I would advise you of
opening a new thread, telling us about your system, version information
(from the WebUI), and the problems you're having. Many people who know
how to help, which pretty much excludes me ;), will get into a dialogue
with you and make the system better for EVERYONE (which includes you! :)
My guess is that there's something specfic to your set up that is giving
you problems.

Good Luck and I'll help too if I can!

Re: [slim] Hard drive storage suggestions

2008-10-23 Thread GlenL

Squeezecenter only recognizes one path to the music files so you cannot
add a 2nd,3rd ... etc path.

What you can do though is add a shortcut in your existing music folder
that points to the music folder on any new disk you add.

e.g If your existing music is held in C:\Music and your new disk (D:)
also contains a music folder (D:\Music) then you need to create a
shortcut in C:\Music that points to D:\Music.

When Squeezecenter performs a scan for new music, it will then follow
the shortcut and scan any music in D:\Music.

If you are using a Linux based OS running Squuezecenter I imagine some
sort of symbolic link would achieve the same thing.

Issue 1.

When accessing music library menus do not allow access to music for
example goto music library press right to artist press right artist
displayed again press right artist dispayed again, i can never get past
the artist menu, these happens for all menus accessed from music
library

Issue 2.

So i guess all three issues are related

Sorry again, but I somehow lost my nerves when I wrote my earlier
post.
But after 2 hours of installing, re-installing and configuring my
SqueezeCenter / Transporter / Controller system without success it
still was not working properly.

I had some minor issues with SC 7.2 which I supposed to be solved in
7.2.1:

1. Controller firmware update SOMETIMES did not work (only when
connected to SqueezeNetwork)
2. Controller hangs in some situations

After installing the situation changed:

3. Connection to SqueezeNetwork with Controller NEVER works (register
Controller to SqueezeNetwork with PIN is impossible)
4. Controller hangs more often than with SC 7.2
5. Transporter never switches off audio outputs when switched off
although it's correctly configured in the settings
5. Transporter hangs when I try to play any music, locally stored MP3s
AND internet radio

Just to name a few.

After downgrade to SC 7.2 AND Transporter factory reset plus xilinx
reprogramming almost everything is as it was before I tried SC 7.2.1.
But issue 3. is still there and additionally Controller firmware update
NEVER works.

You can also create folders using New Folders then same as above.

All of the above also work in SC7 Favorites.

The stream is AAC+. Have you configured SqueezeCenter to play AAC+
streams. See following Wiki.

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/AACplus

It is because they are using AAC+ that the sound quality is so good
with just 64k.

I created a new folder with the correct path to the myradio.opml file,
and then enterted a station. All is well, however if I navigate away

trying to load... the file from the old pathname and I cannot see my
new folder or station entries, although they are still accesible from
favorites on the player. Any thoughts on how to change the default
path?

Seperate question. The favorites of SquezeCenter and SqueezeNetwork
are two seperate with I assume the advantage of having favs in
SqueezeNetwork is in not having to have the computer on, correct?

Is there an easy way to transfer all the SqueezeNetwork entries to the
Squeezecenter favs file? I see an import button there which gives me
hope of not having to manually enter all the data again.

Thanks,

Yes, that is how SlimServer currently accesses my music, spread over
four drives.

The question I was asking is what is the *reason* that SlimCenter
doesn't work in the same way as every comparable program I know and
allow you to select multiple paths. I am curious. I imagine it might
something to do with the cross-platform nature of the server, but would
like this confirmed (or not) and to know more.

I'm guessing it's not anything so exciting. I imagine the only big
roadblock is they'd have to rewrite the Browse Music Folder UI to
accomodate multiple paths. It currently seems designed for navigating
a single directory tree.

I've never messed with the OPML stuff. Someone probably has the path
and import solutions for you. What happens if you create a folder then
manually add a station (not opml)? Does it keep it then?

Yes, no computer needed for SN. However SN's functions are quite
limited in regards to Favorites (i.e. no way to create Folders
etc...). But the SN guru AndyG is working on this for future updates
to SN.:)

Sorry for the lack of understanding.

A symlink is just a filesystem shortcut to another location. Note that
it is NOT the same thing as a GUI-style shortcut you'd create on your
desktop. I only know for sure about how to do this in Linux, but I'm
pretty sure the syntax is the same on a Mac.

In Linux, you type ln -s target link name. For example, if your
SC music folder is at /home/username/music and you want to add a drive
at /dev/sdb, you type ln -s /dev/sdb /home/username/music/sdb

I believe Vista recently added symlink-ish capabilities to Windows, but
I'm not sure how to use them.
