Re: [slim] Artwork resizing - could it be managed better?

2008-10-24 Thread MrSinatra

i think a user, and esp a nas user, should be able to optionally run
scans with settings they choose.

imagine an artwork only scan. imagine a music only scan.

sure, this may mean your music and art are somewhat out of sync at
times, but the user should have the option.

(other options in a scanner would be what to look for, so you could
turn off looking for embedded artwork, or certain tags you don't need
or care about, and as i've mentioned elsewhere, the ability to turn off
automated logics like VA and GH)

Re: [slim] Announcement Squeezecenter 7.2.1

2008-10-24 Thread jeebers

Thought I'd share my experience with upgrading to 7.2.1

All is working fine now, although it was the first time that I
encountered significant problems when upgrading. I think it is related
to / the same as this bug -
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8272 . I uninstalled 7.2
rather than install over the top (for reasons I will go into shortly)
and skipped the SqueezeNetwork registration. MY SB3 then refused to
respond to the Press Brightness to upgrade firmware prompt.

The reason I uninstalled first is that for *every* SS/SC upgrade bar
one (I can't remember which one I'm afraid) the installer has frozen
when trying to install over the top of a previous installation. It
always freezes at the Creating Directories stage - I think it's this
bug - http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9698 . To be honest
I've probably not waited as long as 1.5 minutes to see if it continues,
maybe I will next time...

Re: [slim] Battery life time for Duet Controller?

2008-10-24 Thread Howard Passman

I've never run mine completely down. I do a ton of chimping
(photography term, but it may crossover) and have listened for a few
hours and not gone lower than 75% full. When I loaded SC 7.3 beta and
turned on the SBC as a player, I ran it straight, with headphones, for
2.5 hours, chimping and all and it was still at half full. When I
stopped it for just a few minutes and turned it back on, it showed 75%
full again.

I've had my DUET since they first became available so the lithium ion
batteries have been somewhat cycled many, many times. Always seems to
help.

Re: [slim] Artwork resizing - could it be managed better?

2008-10-24 Thread Michael Herger
AH! No go for ReadyNAS and artwork on demand resampling then. But
what does it do for 13 hours then?

As I said it lacks support for floating point operations in the CPU. Thus
resizing one artwork might take 20 secs. vs. 2 secs in resize mode.

It must be resampling and caching
the resampled images somewhere. What size are they and where are they
 being cached to?

They're the size as used on the Controller (50, 56) plus what you've defined as
the thumb artwork size in the web UI (100 by default).

I turned on debug for artwork and noticed that SlimPronto requests
64x64 images to display a coverart collage. Squeezecenter then resizes
from the original folder.fpg of 500x500 to 64x64. Now if these 64x64
images were already cached then there would be no need for this on
demand resize. Images would just be retrieved from cache. So we could
have resampling enabled and the only downside would be the long scan
 time.

There's already an enhancement request for additional formats. You might want
to add your voice.

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9757

I also noticed that the web interface requests 100x100 and those also
get resized and resampled on demand.

They should be pre-cached.

If your XM is working now, it won't with the new versions. Save your

favorites they still work. Make sure you do this. You can add them

[slim] Squeezebox Duo and PS3?

2008-10-24 Thread fredrikg

I am new to SqueezeBox, so please forgive me if this is a stupid
question.

Here's my situation:
I use a Squeezebox to play music from a Windows server. The Squeezebox
is connected, using SPDIF, to a decent to a set of loudspeakers with
internal DA and amplifiers.

I also have a PS3 for DVD and Blueray playback. For the sound, I would
like to connect this to the same set of loudspeakers. However, the
loudspeakers only has one SPDIF input, so I need to use some kind of
SPDIF switch to choose input (Squeezebox or PS3) to the loudspeakers.

But, I was thinking there would be another way to do this. Perhaps the
PS3 could work as a source for the Squeezebox? In other words, when I
play a DVD/Blueray on the PS3, the sound would be through the
Squeezebox to the loudspeakers. This way, I could avoid the
SPDIF-switch, and a few cables (which I hate).

Is this possible at all?

/Fredrik

If it only lasted 5 hours when I used it like that I would be extremely

Re: [slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep - Please post your issues

2008-10-24 Thread Kplan

Same problem here.

I have a Netgear WNDR3300 Router wired connected to a SB receiver
(living room). The Vista 32bit based computer is connected thru a
Netgear WNHDE111 in 5GHz/N bridge mode to the router. This connection
is rock solid and I never encountered a problem. The SB Controller is
connected directly to the WNDR3300 G-Network. With the wired SB
receiver in the living room I don't have any connection problems. I can
put down the SB Controller for hours either with or without the charging
station. The SB Controller resumes very quickly and I can continue
listening music.
But in the bedroom I have every day the mentioned reconnect error. The
SB Receiver there is connected throu a standalone AP from Zyxel which
is wired to the router. This is because the signal in the bedroom is
stronger with the Zyxel as with the Netgear. I use the same SB
Controller to control the receiver in the bedroom.
Every day there are such interrupts with the controller. Even if the
receiver still plays good night music, the controller loses the
connection and tries endlessly to reconnect. This can be after 5mins
laying around in the bedroom or for sure on the next morning. Every
time I need to reboot the controller. After that, the controller can
always connect to the SqueezeCenter on my computer.

The Zyxel AP runs on channel 1, the Netgear router on channel 13. There
are several other APs in the Neigbourhood but all those have other
channels and very poor signal strength. But the signal quality of the
netgear's AP is very unstable and varys between 0 and 40%. So it can be
that the controller loses connection. But it should be able to reconnect
on it's own if the connection is there again. The Quality over the Zyxel
is between 40 and 60%. FLACs can easily be streamed over it.

All devices in my network have reserved IPs in the router. The
sqzeezeCenter-computer is hibernated every night.

How far is the progress of this bug? Will it be in the 7.3 release?
When will the 7.3 release be?

Thank you for your engagement.

Sorry, forgive my ignorance (I've had a fairly easy run with upgrades

So far the controller hasn't hung like it did last time, but I haven't

Is there any way to get the song information working on Live365 for a
paid VIP account?
It appears that it only works correctly for free accounts unless I am
missing something.

Thanks,
Scaven

[slim] Black bar across screen

2008-10-24 Thread Delennyk

Hi,looking for some suggestions on what could be wrong with my
Squeezebox3,whats started to happen is that in the last while after i
turn the player on everything goes well but then after 10-15mins a
black bar appears and runs through the middle of the screen, when I turn
the player off and then on again it is gone and then reappears again
after a few minutes.
What do you think this could be.thanks

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Duo and PS3?

I think you'll need a switch box. The SB3 will not decode the (surround)
output from the PS3. Even if it could, there is no audio input on the
SB3/Duet.

[slim] Duet Controller fails to select music source

2008-10-24 Thread slingshot

My controller is frequently failing to select a new music source, so for
example:-
It was connected to 'Squeeze Centre' in the morning and playing fine
when I finish listening I press pause and leave the controller on (the
PC then sleeps). If I go home this evening and try to connect to
'Squeeze Network' it will try to connect for a bit and then fail.

I get the same the other way around if I've used 'Squeeze Network' in
the morning I can't connect to the PC at night, once I've manually
woken the PC it know 'Squeeze Centre' is availble because it lists it
as a music source it simply fails to connect.

To resolve the issue 1 or other of the following eventually clears it.
1 - Power off and back on the controller.
2 - Reboot the router.
3 - Issue a DHCP release and renew on the router.
4 - Reboot the PC.

Some further info on my setup.
D-Link router.
- Controller and receiever use DHCP.
- Lease time is 24 hours, when I get this problem still have 12 hours
lease left.

'Squeeze Centre' is 7.2

Any ideas please, or let me know if any logging would help sort this
out.

I've had problems like this for a long time, however for a month or 2
after I reset the controller and receiever from scratch it seemed to be
working better, but now it's back.

Thanks

Slingshot

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2008-10-24 Thread ralphy

I currently don't have access to a Mac to build the OSX version. I've
been looking at the hack to allow you to run OSX under vmware, but I
have a few more updates planned for squeezeslave first. I'm hoping
someone who has one will step up and create a binary. The source is
availabe on sourceforge so no need for subversion.

I'm planning to integrate the portaudio v19 patch from KeyzerSuze as a
build option for the linux 2.6 binary. There have been mixed success
reports with it, so getting a 32bit linux binary available for people
to test should help iron out the bugs.

I'd also like to remove the 44.1KHz only stream rate limitation in the
near future as well.

As for --volume;

off - Ignore all volume changes. Use must use OS mixer application to
change volume.
on - Use the mixer of the output device when changing volume.
sw - Use internal volume change routines, which should handle replay
gain.

I haven't tested the replay gain functionality, as I don't use it.
It's been in the code for a long time, it's not something I added.

[slim] Display Clock on Now Playing Screen (SB CLassic)

2008-10-24 Thread JadeMonkee

Hey guys!
I use my SqueezeBox Classic as an alarm clock in my bedroom, and would
like it to be able to display the current time, all the time.
I know that when the alarm goes off it remains on the Date Time
screen, but as soon as I press a button (such as when I adjust the
volume) it moves to the Now Playing screen, and I can find no way for
it to display the time without turning it off.
I have fiddled with the Now Playing display options, and had the time
display in-line with the Current Song, but this looks silly, and is
misleading.
I also changed the screensaver when playing to the Date Time
screensaver, but I want to be able to see what song is playing, not
just the time.
I noticed in SqueezeCentre v7.2.1 that it fixes -bug #8555 - Time
displayed on Now Playing screensaver (for Boom used as alarm/radio)-.
So when I installed v7.2.1 I was hoping that it would give this option
to my SqueezeBox Classic, too.
But I can still find no option to have the Now Playing screen also
display the time.
Am I crazy?
Is there any way to have my SB Classic display the time AND the Now
Playing screen?
Help?

Re: [slim] Wireless router advice

2008-10-24 Thread androidtopp

tamanaco;350381 Wrote:
androidtopp, what's your opinion of the 4500 as you compare it to the
 4300?

Well, I don't know if I mentioned this before, but my real reason for
upgrading was work related. An odd bug, which seemed to be acknowledged
by D-Link, and just never fixed (maybe it wasn't possible with firmware
update) meant that the DGL-4300 wouldn't pass Cisco VPN traffic over
wireless. I get home, sit down on the couch with the work laptop, fire
up my SB3 (critial!) fire up the VPN - and no joy. When I would go to
the router and wire up, I'd be off to the races in seconds. So having
liked everything else abotu the 4300, I bought a 4500, with which I
have no VPN issued, wireless or wired.

The reason I bought the 4300 initally was a like of D-Link interface,
and the built in gig switch, which was rare at the time. I like the
port forwarding setup D-Link allows. Some of the advanced features,
like GameFuel and the USB port on the 4500 (recently feature enhanced
by a firmware update) I've not really mucked with.

I do perfer the triple anetenna on the 4500 - lets me connect up
D-Link's higher gain 3-antenna properly. Both are very solid, with the
exception of that VPN oddness.

Re: [slim] Best Harmony for SB3?

2008-10-24 Thread androidtopp

Granted, I think the Harmony 1000 is stupid big, but I have the Harmony
One and can adjust the delay between commands. I think the Harmony is
erring on the side of a long delay between commands which turns out to
be unneccessary in most cases. You might look in the control software.

The Harmony One is life changing for me - I pick it up, shake it so the
accelerometer turns on the backlight, press Activities and press
Listen to Music. Then I just use the little d-pad to browse through
the SB3 menus like I would with the SB3 remote - so a huge net gain
between finding amp remote, changing input, finding sb3 remote,
powering on, etc, etc. Plus, the state based stuff in the One (which I
think extends to other models) remembers what else is on but not needed
for the Listen to Music activity. So if I was watching TV, it knows
the TV needs to be turned off, and handles it properly without needing
the TV to support discrete on/off commands. ONly change amp input,
rather trying to turn it on, etc. All things I'm sure people have
pointed out earlier in this thread.

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2008-10-24 Thread bobkoure

BTW, here's an easy way to use ss2 from the GUI
1) move or copy the files into a folder where you plan to keep them (I
used c:\program files\squeezeslave2, but you can use whatever you like)
2) use windows explorer to navigate to that directory (if you're not
there already from the above)
3) right-click (and hold) squeezeslave.exe, and drag to white space in
that folder. When asked, select create shortcuts here - which will
create a link called shortcut to squeezeslave2.exe
4) right-click that new link and select properties
5) in the shortcut tab:
5a) find the target edit box. the path so squeezeslave2 will already
be there. Append a space, plus the name of you SqueezeCenter server
(plus any other command options you might want)
5b) find the run drop-down box - change to minimized
6) optional: in the general tab
6a) change the name
6b) change the icon (the system has an OK note+speaker icon - but
choose whatever suits your fancy)
7) click OK to close the properties box
8) right-click (and hold) your new shortcut - drag to wherever you
like (start menu, desktop, quickstart bar), and select copy when
asked (so there's always the original shortcut to copy somewhere else)

That's it (and it takes a -lot- longer to write up than it takes to
actually do it).
You can now click the shortcut icon to start squeezeslave2, which will
run minimized, so it's just an icon on the tray. You can close ss2 by
right-clicking the icon in the tray (not the shortcut icon you used to
start ss2) and pick close.

IMHO this is a bit more convenient than running as service for a
desktop machine that you're going to be sitting at anyway. Logging off
closes ss2.
Oh - and you can drag that icon into your startup menu item if you want
ss2 to start when you login.

Hope this helps someone. My guess is that anyone using ss2, and so
comfortable with the command line, already knows this stuff, but maybe
not...

-Thank you!-
On my system, the earlier w32 version was essentially unusable (jumped

One very minor issue: when I upgraded to 7.2.1 this AM, I discovered
that the web interface was unable to add tracks with ss2 (the cover
icon at the top of the right-hand panel would, just jump a tiny bit
when I clicked add track in the left panel. Restarting ss2 did not
help, but -synchronizing- it with a hardware player, adding a track,
worked fine - and it continued to work fine even after the
synchronization was removed.

I have looked at the CLI documentation. While very well documented for
doing CLI commands, I'm not too sure how to translate that into the
script. Best I've been able to come up with is (not sure of the
syntax):

new SqueezeJS.UI.playerStatus.mode({ then what?? })
if playerStatus.mode=pause1 then change the Title from Now Playing
[songindex] of [songcount] to Now Paused on [songindex] of
[songcount] and so forth for stopped and power off.

A little guidenance is appreciated.

 Thanks,

I don't want to sound all flippant, but why not just buy a 500gb HDD
and use that as your source? True, if you have a bunch of spare 250s
around, it may be crazy to go and buy yet another drive. But you could
always use 2 of your 250s as a back-up for the new 500. Like most of us
here, I guess, I live in fear of losing all my hard-ripped flacs (and I
did have a total failure of my main music HDD drive a few months back),
so I have several copies of the entire collection: the main
Squeezecenter external HDD, a complete back up of that on another HDD
(using running software to keep it current), and a complete off-site
back up on yet another HDD, updated every month or so.

I suggest this because my own 250 external music HDD is nearly full -
but a quality 500 HDD is only going to run me 150 US just now, and my
various 250s will make perfectly good back-up locations (splitting the
new 500 to back up, say, all classical to one 250, and all modern to
another...)

Re: [slim] Help!! Squeezebox Controller LCD problem (displays white screen)

You could try doing a factory reset on the controller (it's probably the
first step tech support would ask you to do anyway). You do this by
holding down the add button (+) while you power on the controller. Of
course it should be powered off prior.

Here you can find everything you need to know about the controller UI:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/ControllerUI

If you still see the same behavior, it's time for a call to tech
support.

DbPowerAmp Music Converter (not the ripper) has a batch encode function

Re: [slim] Hard drive storage suggestions

2008-10-24 Thread DeVerm

Hi there,

I see you all use symlinking/shortcuts to put a drive into your music
folder. However, if your drive is for your music only, and I think most
users have music-only drives, it's much easier to mount the drive
directly into your music folder!

Under unix flavors this is done with the initial mount command (you'll
find it in the rc scripts). After a lot of searching I found how to do
this in XP too. You need NTFS formatted partitions but that's what you
probably use in Windows. Here's how to do it:

create an empty folder in your music folder.

control panel-Administrative tools-Computer Management-Disk
management

Here, all your disks show up. Right click on the music disc and choose
change drive letter and paths. Choose Add, click the browse button
and select the new empty folder. After that you can remove the
drive-letter assignment.

I assume Vista has similar way to do it, but I banned Vista so wouldn't
know.

cheers,
Nick.

currently have 4 200GB SATA drives in RAID5 on about a $100 controller
card. So I see ~600GB of usable space for music, and I can (and have)
survive a single drive failure with no data loss, just a performance
hit until I rebuild the array. No corruption protection, but it does
keep you from losing it all just becuase a disk drops.

Someone mentioned Drobo above - I have gotten rave reviews from several
owners. That would give you the fault tolerance of RAID5 with the
ability to swap in bigger disks as you need them, without having to
break and rebuild the array like a traditional controller would
require. Just more expensive for the enclosure.

Hmm.. the external antenna works well (good first step!) because signal
level doubled. One would assume it would make a difference for your
receiver. Try turning the SBR in different directions as it has two
internal antenna's that are somewhat directional. First turn horizontal
in 45 degree steps (4 steps total = 180 degrees is enough) and check
level after each step. Next, try moving it a couple of inches in
different directions on the table/shelf you have put the receiver (an
inch can make a big difference) and next try turning in a vertical
plane.

Also, I would advise you to put the receiver next to your SB3 (just for
test) and see what happens. Or even closer to your router, no need for
amp/speakers etc. just the receiver. If you never get a 5000 rating,
there's something wrong, but also remember to stop other wifi traffic
during that test.

I can't tell you how much you need for wma but 1000 is probably
borderline or just enough for lossless. 2000 with some errors is enough
I think.

Yes, choosing G-only will make a big difference and make sure you do
the short pre-amble too. Just check if everything else keeps working
when you tweak these settings but these 2 shouldn't give any problems.
As your SB3 does 5000, your receiver should be able to do that when you
move it to a good position even without changing settings on the wifi
router. It's just that when you run the 5000 test on both SB's
simultaniously that the wifi settings can make a difference.

cheers,
Nick.

Re: [slim] Hard drive storage suggestions

The geek in me also suggests RAID5 for all those 250GB drives. I
currently have 4 200GB SATA drives in RAID5 on about a $100 controller
card. So I see ~600GB of usable space for music, and I can (and have)
survive a single drive failure with no data loss, just a performance
hit until I rebuild the array. No corruption protection, but it does
keep you from losing it all just becuase a disk drops.

Wouldn't you be better off with just one drive and another drive as a
backup? Cheaper too. For now, you have 4 drives, but in what you
describe, no backup.

With multiple drives, your risk of a drive failure is greater, isn't
it?

[slim] Squeezebox without a computer...

2008-10-24 Thread Vladimir36

Finally I can use Squeezebox without a computer. I found a way to use my
Siemens SE555 router as a webserver. Now I can play music from USB stick
or external hard drive plugged in the router. MP3 files are stored as My
Favorites on SqueezeNetwork.

Just wonder does anyone have the same setting?

I do have another backup. What RAID5 gets me is more speed (reads are
from N-1 drives in the RAID set, as opposed to one big drive) and the
ability to consolidate cheaper smaller drives into uniform file
storage. Back when I made this, 200s were cheap, 500s were not.

Having multiple drives increases your risk of a drive failure at some
point, becuase there are multiple drives to potentially fail, but
having multiple drives doesn't accelerate individual drive time to
failure. Basically, after 4 years, I still have 3 of the original
drives, and I lost the 4th well into year 3. I've had single disks fail
much earlier, and under less load, so in this instance, I'm not seeing
increased failure rate. I guess, think of the failure as inevitable?
Sooner or later, hard drives fail. This way, the failure doesn't mean
your data is gone, and you don't have to resort to backups. It's
doesn't even interrupt normal operation.

There's a little geek factor here - it's overkill for most folks. As
are the mirrored 10k RPM drives comprising the boot volume in this
server. But why not?

Hi Andy

Still wasting time with this problem.

I don't think the jive files are the problem, they are on
the http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.2.1/
directory now.

I'm trying to get the 7.2.0 version back on my server again.

Hi

I want to revert to 7.2.0

but

1) where to find the download for this version (7.2.0) ?

2) is it ok to install 7.2.0 on a 7.2.1 system, or must I
un-install 7.2.1 first ?

Thanks for any help

I always keep the zipped download, going back several versions, in a
folder. If I ever need to revert back it's right there. It's handy
and takes up very little space. I'll bet I have an old SS6.4 in that
file. :)

I do this for any program that updates somewhat regularly, not just SD
/ SC applications.

I guess. Never did a large scale conversion without tags myself.

How does it handle the tagging and cover art? Will it search and add?

If it doesn’t find it how will I know what file is what with 1600 wav
 albums?

Can it store with file names and titles of file if no tag or meta data
 is found?

You already have your tracknames encoded in the filenames.
You can use mp3tag to set the tags from the filenames.

It's free software so just try it on a few folders.
