The good news is that for mainly list based apps, like the Squeezebox

The iPhone interface really is like no other remote, phone or mp3

You only need to resort to s second hand when typing text, click on

I take your point in the lack of physical buttons for things like
volume and track skipping and I doubt the apps will be able to hijack

I know I sound like a complete Apple fanboy, but I'm not. I use the

Re: [slim] OSX - How to Install LAME

2008-11-01 Thread danco

I can't recall how I installed LAME, but I know it worked automatically.
But I've taken a look at the current iTunes-Lame item. I think it might
have changed from earlier versions, and may work differently.

Anyway, if you Show Package Contents on it, you will find lame in the
Resources folder. Copy lame somewhere useful, and all should be ok.

What do I mean by somewhere useful? The installer I used put it in
/usr/local/bin, and all seems to work fine for me, but there are some
advantages (and also disadvantages) in putting it in /usr/bin.

/usr is normally invisible, but can be reached using the Go To Folder
item in the Finder menu.

Try these two locations:

I found a lame binary here (along with flac), but I am not sure if this
is the one being used, perhaps it is from a legacy SS 6.1 or SS 6.5

~/Library/SlimDevices/bin

If your SC install is for all users, then I think the lame binary
should go here:
/Library/PreferencePanes/SqueezeCenter.prefPane/Contents/server/Bin/darwin

I also have lame binaries from Fink MacPorts, but I don't think they

[slim] Range Extenders Compatibility?

2008-11-01 Thread Clnanderson

I'm trying to add a Squeezeboom to my folks setup in an old condo. The
router/ap is at one end of the condo and give reliable wireless for the
back half. Walls are thick and I'd rather not run cat5 down the long
hallway. The circuits are multiple which I believe rules out the
powerline networking. So, I'm trying to gather information about range
extenders. Searching the forums gives some hints that people have had
trouble getting squeezeboxes to work with range extenders, but it's not
conclusive.

My folks have a d-link router but d-link no longer makes a range
extender that I can see. So I'm considering a setup with a

LINKSYS WRE54G Wireless-G Range Extender
and replacing the router with a LINKSYS WRT54GL (flash with tomato
firmware perhaps?)

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated, especially if you've
had trouble with repeaters and squeezebox/booms

[slim] Squeezecenter / Firefox issue

Hello all,

After some issues with IE7, I decided to give the acclaimed Firefox a
try. I downloaded and installed v3.0.3, but now the web interface to
Squeezecenter fails to load, neither in default or Classic mode. I only
get a pop-up window asking me what to do with the
application/octet-stream - either to save to disk or what program to
use to open. Connecting to Squeezecenter using IE7 from the same PC
still works.

Has anyone else run into this problem?
Is there a setting somewhere in Firefox needed to tell the browser how
to deal with the octet-stream?

I am running Squeezecenter 7.3-23734 on a Qnap TS-209-PRO. Never had

[slim] Powering up Bose Lifestyle Series 3 by the SqueezeBox 3 (for alarm, and sleepmode)???

2008-11-01 Thread Blu3IcE

Hi there,

lots of years I was using a little 2.1 Harman/Kardon system, always
powered on.
Therefore alarm and sleep mode where working perfectly.

Few weeks ago I switched to a Bose Lifestyle Series 3.
Unfortunately it has a non IR Remote Control which I think makes it
impossible to use IRman.

It's sad that I can't use the alarm mode because there is no way to
power the Bose up.
And no real way to use the sleep mode because the Bose won't power
down.

Even if I would decide to let it powered up... which I really don't
focus to do, there is still the problem of the volume level...

I'm thankful for any idea

On WinXP you need LAME and Quicktime to play and remote stream m4a

and then LAME to transcode to mp3 for remote streaming, or to stream to
wireless mp3 players (Nokia tablets, cell phones etc).

I doubt this has ever been possible, as I would _love_ to see that feature

It is possible - install Erlands CustomBrowse plugin.

On the SB2, this provides an alternative song information browser, which allows
the user to right-arrow into the song name to get a heirarchy of
artist/album/song for every song that shares the same name.

This is great for finding the original studio album when playing a track from a

When you rule out power line networking because of different circuits,
are the circuits all on the same phase of the panel? Power line

but you may have to bridge the phases to get it to work on both.

I am assuming that you are in the US with typical wiring

[slim] Why do I need the SqueezeCenter server to play my MP3 files?

2008-11-01 Thread RudolfJan

Maybe a stupid question, but important for me. Even my cheapest MP3
player is capable to create a listing of all items and tags. The
squeezebox Duet needs a 30-60Mb server pack to achieve this. This
prevents me from using a cheap NAS for file storage. I think this
really is a major drawback.

What I would like: use the Squeezecenter software to configure
playlists and album info files. Store these on the NAS, make the
Squeezebox connect to the NAS to retrieve these info, just like my
simple cheap MP3 player can do.

Why would this be difficult to achieve? Al alternative would be to
extend the Squeezenetwork server to support this feature. So, just
store the metadata on this server and retrieve the files from the NAS.

This is even more important if you want to store the files in a
lossless format. Hiring server space would be quite expensive and
cumbersome, due to limited download speeds.

my own router's i.p. address is 192.168.2.1 and this is the

in SqueezeCenter/Settings/Information you can do a quick network test

[slim] myradio error message - 7.2.1

2008-11-01 Thread raaurora

How do I get rid of the following error message from my server log:

MyRadio::Plugin. Error: Plugin is incompatible with this version of
SqueezeCenter. Please update.

I went into setup/plugins, but myradio is grayed out so I cannot even
unselect it. I don't use this feature.

Re: [slim] How to display wireless channel?

2008-11-01 Thread mr-b

The wireless router is set to Auto for the channel #, so I wanted to
see which one had been selected (not sure of the selection algorithm).

Edit: Doh, just spotted the Wireless Status page which says it's using
channel #1.

I looked at using netstumbler (as apparently it can show which channels
are already active) but it won't work on my laptop (or its wireless
adapter), but that's another story ... :-(

So I guess it's now a matter of trial and error ...

Don't mention it.

Last.fm is great and does a lot more than Similar Artists radio.
I particularly like the following functionality:

1) Listening to individual neighbours radio. The nearer the neighbour
the nearer the taste to your own.
2) Tag radio. When you just feel listening to generic folk or party (or
whatever) radio
3) Loved Tracks Radio. This is my favourite bit. As I pay to subscribe
to last.fm (it's a very paltry amount) I can play others Loved Tracks
radio. A lot of people seem to maintain their Loved Tracks well (and I
believe this might help their general profile) and so listening to
anothers Loved Tracks radio means you generally get some classy tracks
that you'd never normally have come across. You get very few duds
anyway (unless you absolutely hate everything in particular genres).

It does take quite a while to build up your last.fm profile though...

Erland's suite of plug-ins are a must-have for me. I use SQLPlaylist
(which requires Dynamic Playlist), Trackstat, Custom Skip and Custom
Scan.

I like random mixes that allow higher rated tracks to play more often,
and skips certain tracks entirely. The combination of SQLPlaylist,
Trackstat and Custom Skip have given me virtually all the control I
need over such playlists. I've also used it to narrow down by genre,
time periods, etc.

I couldn't imagine enjoying my Squeezeboxen nearly as much without
Erland's vital plug-ins.

Re: [slim] Favorite Pluggins?

2008-11-01 Thread MeSue

My must have's are most of Erland's plugins. The ones I use are Custom
Browse, Custom Scan, Dynamic Playlists, SQL Playlists, and Trackstat.

With Custom Scan and Trackstat I can do things like filtering my
MusicIP mixes based on ratings and play stats. For instance, my default
filter in MIP is for songs rated 3 and higher that have not been played
in a month.

With Custom Browse I can do a sort of simulated Multi-Library Based on
a tag in the comments. One example is I have tagged all my husband's
favorite music with a special tag in the comments, and set up a menu in
Custom Browse which only shows those songs. Since our music is all mixed
together this works better than the Multi-library plugin for us. It can
do a lot more, like you can browse by years or decades, or ratings, or
a subset of genres, or never played songs, and so on. It's all very
customizable so you aren't restricted to the menus that SC provides.

Dynamic Playlists and SQL playlists lets you make never-ending
playlists based on stats and tag info. For example, Rock Favorites
pulls a random mix of songs rated 4 or 5 from only my rock genres.

Dynamic Playlists can also make static playlists play dynamically. So
for example, you could have a static playlist of several hundred
workout songs, but when you queue it up as a dynamic playlist it will
randomize it every time. It also adds a limited number of songs to
start and keeps adding one new song at a time so you don't have to bog
down the server by loading a massive playlist and trying to shuffle
it.

Erland's plugins do have a bit of a learning curve to figure out how
they all work together, but they have enhanced my listening so much!
I'd suggest setting aside a full day to figure them out, if you do try
them though.

Re: [slim] Lazy Search install problem.

2008-11-01 Thread Stuart Hickinbottom
When you extract the ZIP file you should get a single LazySearch2
folder - eg drag it to the desktop.

Move that folder into your plugins folder. On Windows I think that means
you have to move it into C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\Server\Plugins.

Then, restart SqueezeCenter (or reboot your computer).

If it's still giving that 404 error take a look here:

Re: [slim] Why do I need the SqueezeCenter server to play my MP3 files?

2008-11-01 Thread radish

It's a design approach. In order to provide the most functionality and
flexibility with relatively low cost/power players the heavy lifting is
performed by the server (everything from drawing the screen to scanning
the library to searching, etc). This brings many, many advantages over
the alternatives (plugins, for one) and is the way it's always been for
SD products.

In terms of running on a NAS, there are plenty of NAS units which can
run SC (see the 3rd party hardware forum) - but I've never seen what
I'd call a cheap NAS - they're all wildly overpriced for what they
actually are (IMHO).

[slim] General setup inquiery

2008-11-01 Thread criticalmess

Hello,

I'm a bit new to the party, but there are some things I'd like to ask
the Slim community, to try to get a better idea about a possible
setup.

I'm wondering about the interference of several Receivers in a server
cabinet- does anybody have any experience related to this?

We've got a fairly large house, which is very minimalistic in
decoration; we chose to have as little as possible in each room.
Speakers, and associated wires and devices were one thing that we
wanted to avoid. There are in total 13 rooms (bedrooms, kitchen, living
room, office 1, office 2, hallways, bathroom 1, bathroom 2, ...). Half
of these rooms are already kitted out with cabling for speakers in the
ceiling (Artsound), and each room has at least one RCA connection. (I
figured redundant cabling to be cheaper than putting in a new ceiling
every now and then).

All cabling comes together in a technical room - where amplifiers are
stocked, network is patched, domotics for lighting is controlled, etc.
So that's all good ...

I was wondering - as the cable is already in place - would it be a good
solution to put several Receivers in the technical space?
All amplifiers that are now connected to the existing speakers are
already stored there (3 amps, each 2 stereo speakers) - and the Slim
Receiver output could just be connected to these amps immediately.

With the Controller - or similar devices in the future - it should be
feasible to control every zone - unless there is interference of
course, from the wireless signals ...

Does anybody here have any experience what happens if you put two or
more Receivers next to each other - do you get interference?

Another question - more related to the specific setup I'm trying to get
at - I want to save a trip to the technical room each time I'd like to
listen to sound, to power on the amplifier for that zone. Is there a
way the Receiver can somehow, I don't know - give a signal?
In essence, this signal can be a kind of vcommand or similar, as to
integrate with the domotics (Vantage) that we are running ...

I'm just wondering about all this, before I'd do purchase, I'd be
interested for all this to become a little clearer ...

Thank you in advance, your advice is much appreciated!
greetings,
Frank

Thanks to all.
I see once more how much more is available. Learning curve is rather
steep for a novice.

I'll be installing Erland's recommended plugins. They sound great.
Just have to spend the time getting them installed and set up.

Currently trying to get Lazy search installed and will then start on
Custom Scan and Trackstat Dynamic Playlists and SQL playlists.

I pretty much have to set aside a day or two just to get things
installed. Another day or two trying to understand the functionality
and setup. Your description of how they all work together makes me
just want it more. I just have to take small steps and try to learn as
I go.

Maybe I don't fully understand your setup, but if your networking
(router and/or switch) is also based in the technical space, you can
just connect the receivers using Ethernet. I wouldn't expect any major
problems anyway, but IMO wired is always preferred if it can be done

Yes, as Fletch says, wired if possible- but according to this photo it
doesn't look like interference would be a problem:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=271794postcount=8 . Maybe
Radish can comment on whether they were ever both in use at the same
time.

As for turning the amps on/off, the Duet Receivers don't have a
headphone output, but the SB3 (squeezebox classic) does. IR blasting
via the headphone output can be used to send signals to the amps for
powering on, if the amp has such an input. I think some other amps auto
sense the RCA signal to control power, but it doesn't sound like yours
do. If that were the case perhaps one SB3 and one cheaper SB Receiver
could be hooked to each amp, so the SB3 could turn it on when needed.

Hi, thanks for the reply, and apologies for the time it has taken me to
respond.

I'll come clean and admit that I held something back in my original
post because I am doing something very non-standard. I actually use the
genre field to store my own personalised ratings flags, including star
ratings (asterisks) and mood information (a custom letter within
brackets). The reason I did this originally is that I wanted
portability for my ratings, i.e I wanted it stored within the MP3 tags
rather than be tied to the application. The genre field was something I
never used, so it seemed ideal for what I wanted to do. That is, until I
moved over to SqueezeCenter...

The standard search you mentioned doesn't search the genre field,
whereas winamp does. For searches from the remote, it does not allow
you (as far as I know) to enter symbols such as asterisk or brackets.

I'm considering exporting all these tags and re-importing them into
another unused tag that is searchable in SqueezeCenter, as I don't
currently see any easy option.

Re: [slim] Lazy Search install problem.

2008-11-01 Thread Stuart Hickinbottom
If you've stopped SqueezeCenter then by deleting the contents of this I
believe you'll clear your database (but your music files won't be
affected), so you'll have to rescan, and your SqueezeCenter and player
preferences may need to be reset, so that may be a little drastic.

If you wanted to start by trying just deleting the contents of the
plugin-data.yaml and the prefs/plugin/lazysearch2.prefs file as well
then you'll not lose anything as that data is rebuilt when you restart
the server.

If you're unsure then I would recommend moving the contents of that
folder somewhere else instead of just deleting it - that way you could
always move it back again.

Is that because an iPod remote would be better? Cheaper? Or just cooler?

Probably all of the above. The real basis of my argument here is that
the iPod already has mass market appeal and acceptance. They're
everywhere and everyone uses them. The Squeezebox platform is very
cool, but still niche. Bridging these two worlds can only help. If I
can show friends or family the cool thing I can do using an iPod that
they're already familiar with, it'll sell the Squeezebox platform that
much easier. Sonos has obviously figured this out.

[slim] How to export Favourites to iTunes playlist?

2008-11-01 Thread shlea

Hi,

Is there a way to export Favourites to an iTunes playlist?

Whenever I need music for a special purpose I add the actual songs to
the Fav as I am listnening. Then I have the Fav list open at the same
time as iTunes, and I select and manually make a playlist in iTunes
using the actual songs.

I assume that this can be done automatically, but how??

Thanks,

Thanks everyone. This took me 4 hours of research getting nowhere, until
I asked you for help. Hopefully, the next Mac user to come along will
find this.

Also, the iTunes-Lame file will generally be a little less than the
latest version. On October 30, 2008, iTunes-Lame had Lame 3.97, while
the latest was 3.98, however, even though I found a compiled version of
3.98 somewhere, I could not even remember where, and meanwhile,
iTunes-Lame will look like a reliable spot to find a relatively recent
version, hence my use of that spot.

Why would this be difficult to achieve?

Here's why it will never happen--SqueezeCenter does more than store a
database of your tags, and far more than any cheap (or even expensive)
MP3 player could do. For example, it draws every pixel on all of your
units' displays. If SqueezeCenter was stripped down to a tags
database, among other things, you wouldn't be able to see what was
playing. Or synchronize multiple players. That sort of thing.

The SlimDevices units are thin clients, designed to have something
smart at the other end of the network or they're more-or-less useless.
Big advantages of this design are simplicity, longevity, and
upgradability. The disadvantage is when someone doesn't want something
smart at the other end of the network, there's not enough power in the
end-units themselves to do what you want. Sorry, that's all there is
to it.

As others have suggested, you may be able to accomplish something like
this with SqueezeNetwork or Internet services like MP3Tunes now or
someday in the future.

Home data are getting bigger and bigger. Everything: music, photos,
films etc start being stored on hard disks at home. As the price of HD
diminishes, no-one feels the need anymore to rip to a CD or DVD their
data.
So, having a server is becoming a necessity for most households:
they need to store, organize, stream and backup their numerous files.
Even if my listening device (duet) wouldn't oblige me to have a server
software, in fact, I would need one all the same.

Even my iPod obliges me to have a server software: iTunes. :)
And even Microsoft released a Home Server software lately (WHS) ;)

[slim] Receiver Renames Itself?

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my Squeezebox Receiver renaming itself. Every

This seems to happen regardless of whether I rename the receiver from

Version info:

That's the way a bridge works. The SBR allows the controller direct
bridged access to your local network. Maybe I'll go visit my friend

The best way to have artwork displayed is to embed the artwork into
each individual track. CoverScout can do this in several ways.

I have a Lossless library of almost 1700 CDs. Downloading artwork from

to the individual track.

You can use program to search Amazon or Google for the rest.

[slim] Recent Problems with Duet Controller

2008-11-01 Thread socistep

Hi All,

Having a number of problems with my Duet controller recently, I noticed
that I was getting the BIOD problems as many have experienced and
outlined in the sticky. Given that I upgraded to v7.2.1 of SC but have
had more problems since:

- Can't upgrade to latest version of SBC firmware (r3191)
- Unstable on both SC SN
- Slow response
- Controller freezing and rebooting e.g. if I go into browse an artist
from my library then it will freeze and cause the controller to
restart
- Losing connection to SBR/Music source

Hazarding a guess then I would say its to with the firmware being out
of sync with 7.2.1, what do others think ?

Cheers
Ian

need to use http://yourserver:9000/html/SqueezeJS/nowplaying.html

Btw, the JS comment text is showing when I use Firefox or Chrome.
Probably just a non-standard MS think that is easy to bring in to line
with the others.

Re: [slim] External Hard Drive Help?

2008-11-01 Thread badbob

You need slimserver installed somewhere, either a PC or NAS. You cannot
just plug a Squeezebox directly into a dumb USB, SATA or Firewire
hard drive.

If the USB HD is just another HD in your PC, set that path in Slim
center, or create a short cut in the main directory to your USB HD
path.

Appreciate the reply. Sorry, I should have been more specific. I use
(and love) my SB3 w/ my PC's hard drive. I've outgrown it and want to
expand to an external hard drive. Thanks.

Never tried that before. Do you have 'automatic updates' enabled in Web

I'm not following your question (nor can I find that menu structure).
I have SC automatically check for updates and I have my players
automatically update firmware. Is there a similar setting for the
controller (didn't check that)? In any case, the jive files weren't
even in the directory at all. As soon as I put them there from your
earlier link, the upgrade worked. To upgrade SC, I'll just download
the code and install over the original. I assumed that added needed
jive components, but maybe not?

Depends on whether you want to use only the external drive to store all
your music, or you want to use it in addition to another folder to store
your music.

If it's all to be on the external drive, then go to Settings Basic
Settings and change the Music Folder. Either type it in or browse to
the root folder where you have music stored on the external.

On the other hand, if you want to use more than one location for your
music then you'll need to use at least one Windows shortcut. If you
can find your current music folder, create a shortcut there which
points to the external drive. What I recommend, though, is to use an
empty Music Folder (create one somewhere) and then place shortcuts in
that otherwise empty folder that point to each of the music locations.
This way it's a little easier to manage and you don't lose a shortcut in
some huge folder full of files and other folders. You want to avoid
circular references when using these shortcuts, so losing a shortcut in
your Music Folder can be a pain and cause unexplained scanning issues.

It's not a skin, just an HTML page using a little of the included AJAX
library to display now playing information.

I could maybe see including something like this with the server, but
could easily imagine 100 different people wanting it to be displayed
100 different ways, so there'd be endless requests for different
display preferences.

That's what I meant, SettingsAdvanced, from the Web Interface.

I assumed the added jive components were added when SC was upgraded
too, but there have been a lot of posts about ppl having trouble with
7.2.1.

You're right.
The Bridged SBR is running [WEP][IBSS]

I have set my rescan to scan for new music every evening. I have noticed
lately that it doesn't seem to pick up the new albums I add to it

but obvioulsy this takes too long to do every couple of days

 Anyone any ideas??

Am assuming you're not using iTunes or MIP integration? If you are -
what is the reload interval set to?

If not, take a look at the file creation/modification dates of the new
files - a new and changed music scan will only pick up new files if
the creation/modified date (the latest of the two) is later than the
last time that SC did a scan.

A shortcut to add new files/folders to the SC database is to navigate
to the folder using Browse Music Folder and click in it. It will add
the relevant files (no artwork though) direct to the database.
