No, in fact it's the other way around. The DAC on the SB3 (Classic) is
marginally better than the one on the SBR. If you're using tha digital
out that doesn't make a lot of difference though.

You should phone Slim Devices tech support
(http://www.slimdevices.com/su_tech.html#phone). For a lot of
out-of-warranty repair they will fix things for a flat US$90 fee, plus

Re: [slim] Replacement remote for Squeezebox

2009-01-11 Thread deserttaxguy

I updated the firmware Saturday night and now its dead. Naturally, I
check the power first, then make sure the cable it pushed all the way
in the back of the SB3, but now the remote won't turn it on and my
Squeeze center says the player isn't found, so what do you do with a
dead SB- Throw it out, or is there a repair and diagnostic place to
send them?

Mark- Thanks for the lead on additional remotes and the link to the
diagnostic thing. I try that if I can.
My network is fine, and I've been through all the firewall and network
issues a few years ago when I first got mine. I guess I'll try
reinitializing it with a cable instead of wireless. Sometimes that
helped. And speaking of reinitializing, my SB was giving me the mac not
recognized error which I corrected once a few months ago. Why would it
lose the Mac address and need resetting? I think I have a problem with
hardware (SB?)

Re: [slim] Apple TV or Popcorn Hour

2009-01-11 Thread Nikhil

I too was trying to select from a bunch of devices including
SlingMedia's SlingCatcher, the TViX devices, AppleTV and the Network
Media Tank Devices (Popcorn Hour).

The SlingCatcher was interesting because it would allow me to watch my
remote SlingBox on TV in addition to watching local video files.
However, the reviews were terrible, and video format support was not as
extensive as the other deices. The TViX systems seemed to have quite a
following, but were quite expensive. So I narrowed it down to the other
two.

The GUI on the AppleTV (as with most things Apple) is far superior to
that on the Popcornhour, and if you don't mind living within the Apple
ecosystem - it should be the best choice. While its native format
support is a bit limited, if you are up for a bit of hacking, you can
enhance its functionality and format support using Boxee.tv or XBMC.
Also as you mention, the supplied internal HDD is nice.

I personally went with the Popcorn hour because in many ways it is
similar to the SqueezeBox. Out of the box it supports almost every
format under the sun. It is constantly under development, and even
though its GUI is a little crude as compared with AppleTV - it is
perfectly usable. The option to add a 2.5" or 3.5" SATA HDD (on the
Popcorn Hour A-110), the 2 external USB ports (2 host and 1 client),
the plethora of connectivity options and the stunning quality of images
pushed me towards the Popcorn hour. The SMB, NFS, FTP (ability to act as
a NAS), and BitTorrent capabilities are very useful, and the UPnP
support should allow control from an external renderer like a Nokia
Internet Tablet, or N series phone, and also from an iPhone once you
install some UPnP control software.

Hope that helps.

P.S...As a side note, if you don't need network support and all the
other bells and whistles, you can get the WD HD media player for under
$100 - it supports nearly all of the formats that the NMT devices do,
but you have to plug in your USB drives directly to the player.

[slim] Sennheiser RS-120

2009-01-11 Thread MeSue

Anyone else have these headphones? I like everything about them except
that they are very loose on my head and there is no adjustment. If I
sneeze, I have to hold them or they will go flying.

I was curious if others have this problem with them. I don't think my
head is abnormally small.

I even got the company to exchange my first set because they were so
loose but the replacement is just as bad.

Can anyone suggest wireless headphones that are similar in price and
quality but better-fitting? Preferably ones without foam directly on
your ears... the Sennheisers have a nice covering.

Re: [slim] Why is SSID broadcast required to be on?

This seems the proper discussion for my question although it seems
pretty old. When I set up the controller of my Duet, I had SSID
broadcasting enabled in order not to have to enter the SSID manually.
Once everything was set up I disabled the broadcasting again, but then
the controller was no longer able to connect to the network although it
was still being displayed in the list of networks.

Is SSID broadcasting required in general or just if it was enabled
during setup? Somehow, I do not fancy entering my WPA key a second time

Re: [slim] Adding a Popcorn Hour to my Squeeze system

2009-01-11 Thread hoosier

Any discussion on a PCH and XBMC would be incomplete without taking a
look at a TViX (dvico.com).

If you want to stream 1080p material, you need to consider the encoding
- mpeg2 is relatively easy, while h264 and VC1 are very processor
intensive. You are only looking at 20mbps which isn't that much for
any decent 100mb connection. What I have found is that the processor
on the device can choke on blu-ray material (I think the term is
something like h264 level 4.1). If you want HD, the device must have a
Sigma Designs SMP8635.

If you want to rip blu-ray disks check out Anydvd HD (slysoft.com).

Personally, I own 5 Squeezeboxen and two Tvix players (a 5000 and a
4100 - I need to get a 6500). They compliment each other nicely - one
is awesome for music, the other is awesome for video. I actually use
two different computers (one for music, and one for video), but one
could do the job just fine.

Re: [slim] NYTimes - Cisco to enter the Home Digital Entertainment Market

2009-01-11 Thread furonfour

Found a partial review on the Media Hub here:

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30688/75/

It also includes some performance data comparing it against other NAS
devices. Data transfer performance looks pretty good for a device in
the price range its in.

Looks like they - sadly - limited it a lot. A flash user interface may
look nice and spiffy, but customizing it is gonna be a lot harder than
for example SqueezeCenter. Most of the features (backup, media
importer) it supports are aimed at Windows based clients.

Judging from the file system it uses internally its OS is based on some
kind of customized Linux implementation, though I admit it is a wild
guess at this time.

Let me say that I am leaning towards the Apple TV initially because I
want it for video only (SB3 is far better for music), I already use
itunes for video, movies, I have a Ipod touch (ipeng rules!) and
converting to MGEG 4 dosent bother me. The built in hard drive makes it
nice, when you dont want to turn on your pc.

Also video quality does not need to be perfect, as a;ot of what I use
is home video that we shoot and encode ourselves. The quality is not
ultra high quality in this

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Re: [slim] Weird pauses at end of track in random

2009-01-11 Thread Jackswan

There are two tracks in the log file, the first is an AC\DC track which
is 5:51 minutes long, this stopped playing at 1:18 minutes, same
happens when selecting as an individual track. But this track plays
fine when playing from the server using FOOBAR.

The second track by Oasis is 5:02 minutes long, this plays fine when
selected as an individual track and also using FOOBAR.

Does seem as though there is something wrong with the Flac transcoder
within Squeezecenter

Has it been discussed before, but with falling memory prices, I'd like
to see the SlimServer/Database incorporated in the actual Squeezebox -
that way there would genuinely be no need for a server of any

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-11 Thread ptrainer

Doh! That is what I was doing wrong, tapping just the sync icons. I
think I was doing it too fast as well. I guess it takes a second for
the screen to repond and I was just tapping the squiggly marks on
players C, and B and then the mark on player A before the x's showed up
and it would sync two players and a second later unsync them again.
Ironically, doing it this wrong way works fine for syncing two players
(which is the most I typically do) because you don't end up tapping a
sqiggly that becomes an x. Thanks for straightening me out on the
proper way to do it.

As I've said, search the release notes for SoundCheck (which is
"Apple-speak" for replay gain). Click on the bug# and read on.

For your convenience here is the direct link to the bugreport so you

I have done some more testing incl multiple reload of the 2.3
firmware.
Seems like i have a consistent pattern:
The unit is working ok after power up as long as I don't use the remote
control but use the web interface to turn on the unit and select music
to play.
As soon as I press any button on the remote, the slimp3 halts for maybe
15 seconds, and then continues to play, but with grabled sound, sound a
bit like it is skipping packets but it does so for hours. In addition
the volume seems to be maxed.
When the device flips to this 'garbled' mode it stays like that until
the unit is powered down (ie stand-by, not physically disconnected from
mains).
If I then turn the device on again with the web-interface, it works ok
again - until the next keypress on the remote control ...

Unless anyone have some bright ideas I guess I have to chuck the remote
away ;-)

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 simply won't play...

2009-01-11 Thread Tubebox

Well, I have just fixed it!
Kind a strange thing happened...
Music is on two external HDs. From another folder on a Mini Mac two
aliases (shortcuts) describe paths from which the music will stream. by
clicking those aliases the one would go straight to the particular
folder. These aliases have been changed. Why, I dont know.
So many reasons:
- I frequently mount and unmount my discs in Mac OS.
- I keep SC starting as the Mac OS starts...
- ...and frequently reboot to Windows and the other way around
Any of aforementioned processes might influence I suppose.
...
I created two new aliases (they are both checked and working),
rescanned both of my drives again and voila... It started to work
again.
No firewalls (except built-in Mac OS) no antivirus softwares.
Kind a trivial thing but might happens...

Never used it as I have no interest in terrestrial radio when not in my
car.
My main purpose of utilizing these devices is to specifically avoid the
typical AM/FM crap.
Though I know there are the *rare* exceptions to the AM/FM junk out
there. :)

It may just be a bad URL, it is (unfortunately) not uncommon with
Internet Radio feeds. The stations themselves or streaming services
like ShoutCast will reassign the URL's at will. Some are the same URL
for years, while others change often. Maybe your station recently
moved/switched URL's and RadioTime just hasn't updated it's listing.

Re: [slim] FM station internet feed help

2009-01-11 Thread bpa

It's a mms: only station and doesn't support http: so it will not play
on SN as SB doesn't support mms. To play the station on SC in
Settings/Advanced/FileTYpes set Windows Media "native" to "disabled".
If SC is running Windows then the station will play OK. If SC is on
Linux or OSX then you will need to install an app than can play mms WMA
streams such as mplayer and also necessary conf file. For OSX and Linux
A quick way is to install AlienBBC plugin as it includes all the
settings for handling WMA as well as RealAudio.

I used the URL below:

Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

2009-01-11 Thread Pale Blue Ego

This looks interesting, a $120 NON-NETWORKED media player that plays all
kinds of files up to 1080p HD. I don't really like the idea of having a
spinning hard drive in the media room, but this might be useful for a
kind of sneaker-net using USB thumb drives. A 16GB drive could hold a
whole season of divx shows or several full-length movies. It can also
play captured HD streams (.ts and .tp) from the HD tuner in my PC.
This would save me a LOT of time and trouble because I currently have
to encode the HD files to standard-def DVD format and burn them to
DVD-R in order to watch them on the big HDTV in the media room. With
this I could just move the raw files onto a thumb drive and play them
on the WD.

Yeah, it won't play via SC7 search. Only thing I can suggest is:
- try SN
- email RadioTime of a bad link
- email the station directly, they may give you a direct URL to stream

Re: [slim] External HD -> PC/Mac compatibility

Macs will read and write FAT32 drives.

Out of the box they will IIRC read NTFS formatted drives but not write
to them.

There are at least two third-party solutions that enable them to write
to NTFS drives also.

MacFuse and NTFS-3G together provide an open-source free solution.

Paragon Software (who do well-regarded PC software for various things
about drives) have their own solution. I think they charge, but for me
it came free on a cover disk, just had to pay the price of the
magazine.

[slim] FM station internet feed help

2009-01-11 Thread discgo

Finally got most of the bugs worked out of my Ubuntu/SC box. One
problem has been plaguing me since I first set up by Duet last summer.

I listen to 91.9 WNRN out of Charlottesville, VA (great station, btw!)
a lot. I've tried listen to it in SC via RadioTime & directly via url.
Nothing works. They are several posts on other forums with a similar
issue with Sonos.

After searching numerous forums I've tried the following urls:
http://www.wnrn.org/music/wnrn.asx
mms://audio.musictoday.com:1755/wnrn
mms://audio.musictoday.com/wnrn

I can listen to the stream fine via their website (www.wnrn.org) and
with the asx stream in RhythmBox. I can't get it to work on
RadioTime's website.

This is my main FM radio station and it's killing me that I can't feed
this through my squeezebox. I'm about to bring out a 20 year old
receiver and put it next to my SB just for this capability. I'm not
opposed to getting an FM tuner card if I can somehow feed that into the
SB. I'm local to the station so that's an option if this can't be done
over the internet.

Any clue on how to get this to work?

enjoy the music!

I think this may point you in the right direction. I was able to
install a utility on my Mac running OS 10.5 where it can read and write
PC formatted volumes (including NTFS I think). I am now able to take a
PC formatted external USB disk that already had my music library on it
and read and write to it on both my Mac and PC.

Google NTFS, sshfs and Mac OS and you should find the same stuff I did.
Many people here are more expert than me in such matters, but I believe
this software uses some of the UNIX core of Mac OS - so the install
isn't as straightforward as I'm used to with the Mac. But with a
little reading and experimentation I was able to figure it out, and it
works flawlessly.

Re: [slim] Idea for Logitech Music Server

2009-01-11 Thread Zaragon

The core of a lot of posts that seem to come up, and this one is perhaps
in keeping with that, is that there should be some form of device that
plugs into existing systems be it an iPOD or existing hifi etc. Then we
get into discussions about the limitations, not many people have them,
limited size, others do it better/faster etc.

Whilst it would still need the SC in its current form the ideal device
would seem to be a small wifi capable embedded device that could act as
an audio input. This then only needs to support a limited
webserver/streaming protocol and you can satisfy most of what many
people want. You could have it support analogue or digital inputs and
it would still be in the 'Slim' client mould. Mmmm almost a receiver
but backwards.

The Squeezeboxes could then attach to it as they do any other steaming
source. Sorts out plugging in iPods or any other portable player, CD
players, distributing (non synchronised) TV sound, DAB radios,
satellite radios etc

I guess Sean would want their usual excellent sound quality so it would
probably cost about the same as a receiver.

Re: [slim] External HD -> PC/Mac compatibility

2009-01-11 Thread utowana

A follow up for clarity. Perhaps this would simplify my question:

I have a Seagate FreeAgent External HD that says it is compatible for
PC and Mac. I have plugged it into my PC, but not installed any
software it offers. Properties of the HD says it is formatted NTFS.
Question: can I write files to this HD, unplug, and replug into a Mac?

Indeed, memory might be a bit of a problem. It only has 128MB of RAM
and third party apps are typical only allowed to use about 30MB.

[slim] External HD -> PC/Mac compatibility

2009-01-11 Thread utowana

I'm hoping a kind soul will help out a Mac know-nothing. I'm a PC guy,
and have an NTFS formatted external USB HD that contains about 250 GB
of mp3's. I want to make a copy of this HD and allow a sister to
access it from her Mac. Can someone help me as to compatibility
issues? I understand that FAT32 is the only format that both a PC and
Mac can read/write to, correct? I read conflicting reports about
problems accessing large files on a FAT32 drive, but no single mp3 is
over the size limit. Are there other considerations? I also am
vaguely aware of third party software products that might help with the
conversion...for example, is there software for the Mac that would allow
it to see an NTFS drive?

I'm a long time SlimDevices devotee and appreciate the help!

Yes i mentioned the SB3 as this actually works and is simple to use.
That was what i meant with "they know how to do it"

a GUI setup pgm of some sort would be exellent, and to be able to alter
one setting without going trough the whole settings procedure is a
given.
This also works with the old product.

Re: [slim] Weird pauses at end of track in random

2009-01-11 Thread awy

This is helpful, thanks. We see that SC did not think that it had
finished streaming the track when the player reported that it was ready
to stream the next one. This is odd.

The track that was playing was
///D:/shares/Music/Oasis-(What%27s%20the%20Story)%20Morning%20Glory%BF/4042%20[Untitled%20Track].flac

Did this track play to the end successfully (did you notice)?

Are you able to play this track successfully by hand (as a single
track)?

How long is this track? You can use More Info from the player Now
Playing screen or click on the track name in the WebUI to see this
information.

what exactly do you do?
You should not click the sync/unsync icon on the second player, but
just the player area itself. Maybe this is a bit confusing, but the
icon becomes a "unsync" icon when a player is synced

Other than that this should work and does so for me.

2009-01-11 Thread ptrainer

I've tried to figure this out to no avail. I can sync any two players
but how do I add a third, fourth, or fifth to the fold? On the SBC you
can just simply keep adding players by changing over to the player and
syncing with an existing group. When I sync A to B in iPeng it works.
But if I tap player C's sync button to player A or B it just seems to
unsync the first group.

I agree that it would be nice to be able to browse your computer and
play what you want. It seems that it would be easy to do as you can
within the folders that you list as library from folder view. It just
doensn't work that way though. I wish that when you went to folder view
it just let you pick what folder to play, not just the one that you
selected as a library folder. I would think it would be an easy add as
you can add music to your libray folder and play it at once. I just
don't know why you can't just go to another drive an play whatever it
is you want to play. This would be a nice new feature in my opinion.
For now just add a folder under the folder you have as your library
and add new music there and you will be able to play new stuff from
folder view.

time and listens to what people like. This is important to me as I
feel he will take comments and requests into consideration as a long

aren't that expensive so why not support all of them if you are able
to? I'm not at this time but in the past that's what I would have
done. I had to choose this time and I picked Ipeng but I think the
others are pretty good too.

Although I didn't write the Windows WaveInput, I've supported WaveInput
for awhile getting it working for users, I've found that generally
simpler and integrated sound cards work more often then addon
specialist high end cards. I have a debug version of the wavin2cmd.exe
which sometime help find problems.

If you want to try again - start a new thread or add to main WaveInput
thread.

Does it work with 7.3? I've been holding off upgrading because of the
lack of a working xm radio. I have ipeng on my sons touch and if xm
worked on it I would upgrade. I just don't want to lose my XM. I like

I've had no luck with the wave input plugin. Probably because of the
onboard soundcard. I'd like an integrated version of this to play.
Would be nice as there is a lot of good music on this site.
