I would love support for the N wireless standard. Not that the SB
itself needs it, but I'm using the SB as a wireless bridge for an old
XBOX running XBMC, and I use that to stream movies to my TV.

Like most (all?) posting here I have to say that not only are
Squeezeboxes the best value audio products **ever**, but they've
revolutionised the way we listen to music. I've never bought as much
music in such a short space of time since going networked with SD gear,
since listening to it is so easy, so flexible, with such high quality
sound.

It's also the only product/topic that's encouraged me to contribute to

Anyway - good luck Sean.

I suspect the new touch screen SB won't have the usual SB3 menu's, but
will run squeezeplay instead. Think of it more like a big standing up
controller with line and digital outputs. If that's true, perhaps you
won't be able to use the classic remote, but just a controller, or

I have had this happen very occasionally - maybe twice in five years -
and the only solution I found that worked was to create a new folder

deleted the cache file as well). You will also need to clear the
browser cache as suggested above.

You only need to match {98C5250D-C29A-4985-AE5F-AFE5367E5006} though
right?

If there's more than one entry (for silly people like me that have
carried over obsolete registry enteries from old devices) then just do a
logical OR on the value data. Only one value will get switched on by the
WiFi.

I assume you just need to check this key value to determine if you
should switch off the WiFi when exiting the application to return it to
its previous state (like TomTom does with Bluetooth).

Actually the request was to turn WiFi ON, when SlimControl is
launched.
But yes, resetting it when SC terminates is probably the proper way to
go.

What do you mean by a logical OR of the value data.
Do you mean querying all values under that {..7E5006} key and assuming
the WiFi to be on, if any of thoses values is greater than 0?

Fortunately a happy user donated a Wifi-enabled XDA smartphone. So I
have at least a clue now what the registry entries look like:-)

I was thinking about where it makes sense to have those extented
controls on a unit which could be a replacement for a SB3. Makes no real
sense for me. But in a narrow enviroment like a kitchen could it be an
enhancement, like the buttons on a Boom. And I saw some posts of people
who build a touch screen system and found it in the daily use at least
useless.

And I do not know what "touch screen" means: a interactiv screen
control like a iPod touch, or more simply a touch triggert control like
on the Logi Z-10 speakers?

Came to think of a new feature id' like :)

It would be very nice to have an option to keep the screen fro
switching off while the SlimControl app is running.
Could be an option in the settings of the program, or an extra button
somewhere in the interface.
That way, I could keep navigating the music without having to switch
screen on again and unlock the phone before I can change to another
track, etc...

TomTom navigator keeps the screen on on my smartphone, so it must be
possible to do.

I think they do handle it differently. Personally I like the screen to
turn off because I like to leave -the device ON!- Nothing's worse than
having to wait for a wi-fi reconnection if the device has been switched
off, but any power saving in this mode is appreciated.

If you have a XDA Diamond or HTC Diamond than any idea to save power in

Just don't forget that these cycles aren't free - your server will be

I think it depends on the server. Once you go 24/7, the new netbooks
don't radically increase consumption by running a background program.
My point for this thread is that if you are 24/7 anyway, adding a
background program will be insignificant to your electric bill and be
very significant to helping solve the world's problems.

What if this big stationary touch screen controller includes an ARM
based fanless server that can run SC? Of course it then would have to
include either wireless N in the case that the music would be stored on
a NAS or it would have to include an USB or eSATA port for external hard

Interesting, my vision is a receiver incl. a SC server :). But 802.11N
is not a solution as long as it is a DRAFT. Just have a look at the
problems people do have with compatibility between G devices. And I
suppose that some new upcoming problems with G units are due to
inteferences with draft N AP which a more and more used by the people
(ok, not at 5GHz). And interoperability between draft N units, is this
as good as between G units?

But it's not really a "background program" - these things are
specifically designed to take 100% cpu when the machine is otherwise
idle (which for a typical file server is almost all the time). It does
of course depend very much on your machine, something like an Atom has a
max usage of around 4W so a 50% change is largely irrelevant. A faster
processor however could have a much bigger range - mine is running on an
Athlon LE-1640 which has a max usage of 45W, compared with an idle usage
closer to 10W - the difference there is obviously much greater. My guess
is that more people are running SC on old P4 boxes (which use huge
amounts of power) than Atoms, so the difference could be quite
significant.

Add to that the fact that you're running the thing at max temps which
may cause interesting issues depending on how good your cooling is (as
well as increasing noise).

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from contributing if they want to,
just making sure people are aware that it's not "free" computing power,
it costs you some extra amount of money and it costs the environment
some extra amount of carbon emissions, even if your machine is normally
on 24/7 like mine.

To add to your thoughtful analysis, please consider that power plants
must always run at some production level that is greater than
consumption. I don't remember the wiggle room factor, it's something
over 10% of consumption, and many systems make such information
available. (Where I am it is the California ISO). Because power plants
don't throttle on and off, the unused factor is considerable at low use
times, like overnight (20-30-40 percent or more)

Increasing power consumption of some number of PCs in people's homes
will not result in any increase of carbon emissions.

Very true, up to a point. You or I individually won't make any
appreciable difference, but if everyone increased their domestic use 5%
then new power plants would be needed to keep that 10% buffer. Likewise,
if everyone lowered their domestic usage 5% I'm sure some plants could
be shut down (and there certainly are plants which don't run 24/7 but
are used only for peak times).

When it comes to SC servers I'm sure it's a tiny drop in a vast ocean,
but when you have things like fold...@home shipping on 10 million PS3s
with no mention of the power issues (those things are thirsty), then I
start to be a little concerned personally.

This depends a lot on the hardware, OS, client, and power consumption
settings. It is possible to run one of these programs without
significantly altering the power consumption of the machine. The laptop
I run SC and fold...@home on cruises along at 800Mhz most of the time.
It instantly scales up to 2.2Ghz (or any of the notches in between) if a
process with a high priority demands it.

Well, then I think you're beating the wrong drum. You admonished
mortslim for his suggestion for SC servers, but now you agree there's no
significant consumption impact of doing so. If the problem is PS3 users,
go after them.

In the US, most electrical consumption is commercial/industrial and
summertime air conditioning. Addiing PCs and/or leaving them on in
homes has less than a negligible effect on production and
infrastructure, it arguably has no effect at all.

Sorry, I'm perhaps overly sensitive to people who espouse feel-good
causes and who think that gives them the right to tell others what to
do.

Reductio ad absurdum (Latin: "reduction to the absurd") is a form of
argument in which a proposition is disproven by following its
implications to a logical but absurd consequence.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_absurdum

I want suggest ideas to save the world, not destroy it. I’m not
advocating "We had to destroy the village in order to save it."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Tre

If you’re really concerned about your power bill, make sure you turn
off lights when not using them and make sure you have energy efficient
units for your major appliances (The Refrigerator/Freezer, The
Washer/Dryer, and your AC/Heat). In addition, good insulation for your
house makes a huge difference. Ride a bike, walk and use public
transportation rather than use your car. Buy your food at local
farmer’s markets. Avoid meat consumption because of the power needed to
raise the beef and transport it. Don’t use a dryer at all, hang your
clothes to dry. Take Navy showers (max 2 minutes). Reduce heat in the
winter – get a big coat and insulated underwear.

Disconnect the TV, radio and cellphone charger (they consume power even
when “off”). If you want music, forget a squeezebox and a server for
it; just sing (not in the shower). Forget email; write letters just
like Benjamin Franklin.

Everyone will find their own comfort level with energy efficiency.

My point is just that if you do have a 24/7 server anyway, it really
doesn’t cost significantly extra to add a distributed computing task.

Regarding a year old Eee PC (newer models are even more efficient): “We
measured the Eee PC at idle and under full load, and it sipped the juice
at a low 14.5W to a peak consumption of 18W.”

http://www.computerpoweruser.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles%2Farchive%2Fc0801%2F13c01%2F13c01.asp

Distributed computing applications allow you to set “the option of
desired processor usage percent”.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volunteer_computing

So you can decide yourself how much of your CPU you want to dedicate to
this endeavor while your computer/server is powered on and otherwise
idle.

And, you can decide to turn off your computer/server at any time of
your own choosing. You could decide, e.g. to just devote 15 minutes
each week to a worthwhile project.

You control the on/off switch.

discovering the Squeezebox (I was looking at an Olive Symphony when I
ran across a reference to the SB3 somewhere), setting it up, ripping and

[slim] SB Boom - Alarm clock problem

2009-05-27 Thread MrBrillo

Primarily using my first SB Boom as an alarm clock (I purchased another
one just yesterday for the main lounge downstairs - brilliant!).

Problem:

the Alarm clock was originally set to 6:15am, which woke me at the
prescribed time with my choice of radio station (Radio New Zealand).
Decided that this was too early, and need more 'zzz so adjusted the
alarm to wake me at 6:30am instead. The alarm went off at 6:15 this
morning!

Double-checked the settings: only 1 alarm set - Monday thru to Friday,
6:30am.

Could this be a caching problem with the SB?

For example, take the cables out of your CD player and plug them into

Yeah, I've tried several different cables - 3 different ones, all of
which work for other stuff - and I've tried all the inputs.

But I think you are right about the earthing thing - I suspect the DAC
is creating another stage which interrupts the 'bad' connection being
made between the SB, preamp and the amp (which is letting in the rf in
this particular instance). That's my guess.

I'm going to try a cheater plug tomorrow, just to try it.

You have to be able to sing haiku to the tune of "Moonlight in Vermont"

I have been having similar problems with my alarm (on both a Boom and a

time, but they always restart again 12 mins after shut off and go in
indefinitely.

I have contacted support about this and they haven't been able to work
out what is going on. However we have managed to isolate the problem as
being related to Radiotime radio streams only.

Apparently others have been having trouble with Radiotime streams
(according to support) although I haven't seen much traffic on the
forums related to it (i.e. none apart from you).

Try a different internet station, a non-radiotime one, and see if that
helps?

it. You didn't do it all alone, and likely wouldn't have done anything
at all without the help of a lot of people. Maybe you thanked them
privately, and if so, this comment is out of line. But it's the public
praises that mean the most.

Re: [slim] Looking for help with a noise problem

2009-05-27 Thread Wirrunna

By the look of the preamp
(http://www.anthemav.com/OldSitev1/pdf/pre1l.pdf) it is well shielded -
looks like a steel chassis weighing 20 pounds. However, from the picture
it appears that the RCA input plugs are mounted on a circuit board and
the ground hookup may be loose or a "dry" joint. The preamp must be at
least 10 years old
>From this thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60122
it appears that the SB3 expects to be grounded through the interconnect
shield and if that was not grounded at the preamp then it could make the
noise you describe - like the noise you got when you plugged in a
magnetic P/U cartridge in a turntable and didn't have the RCA plug to
your preamp plugged in all the way.
Can you get hold of a multimeter to check if the outside of the RCA
input sockets on the preamp are grounded ? Or better still, take the SB3
and preamp to the amp builder and show him the problem.

Thanks for your feedback. The station I'm tuned into is a non radiotime
one - I chose it from the worldwide selection. I'll wait and see what
happens tomorrow morning. If it goes off at 6:15 again, then I'll do a
mains reset.
