I use tomato, it also has it's admin interface available from the internet side via https, and from there i can do Wake on lane. This enables me to boot my server if i want to listen via softsqueeze when i'm traveling. It also supports dyn dns and QoS . And of course the antenna power boosting :) There is more than DD-WRT or Tomato you have some more projekts (google). Ebin bought the WRT54GL the L is for Linux, it has more memory than the standard model and is very well suited to run third party software. Re: [slim] Some Good News For a Change
There are 3rd party firmware loads that you can run on some routers. The WRT-54GL and some versions of the WRT-54G WRT-54GS can run 3rd party firmware loads. Tomato is one project that is out there. DD-WRT is another project. Personally I use DD-WRT on my WRT-54GS. Using 3rd party FW loads often give you capability that is missing from the standard load. I use DD-WRT to boost my wireless signal strenght a smidge. I also use a feature often called static DHCP which allows you so assign an IP address to a particular device in the router. -- maggior Rich - Setup: 2 SB3s, 4 Booms, 1 duet, 1 receiver. Re: [slim] The competition is catching up and some surpassing Squeezebox...fast!
In the midst of renovating our attic, I am re-considering my plan to use a squeezebox touch. With the advent of cheap nettops that can output 1080p video thru HDMI, I will likely buy an Acer Aspire R3610 for $300 (Canadian) and install XBMC, SBS and whatever the software-based player is called (squeezeplay, softsqueeze?). I was attracted to the Touch since I would be able to shut down the old desktop that is my current music (and video) server, but for the same price I can get a computer that will act as music and video server and player. I currently own a SB3 and a Boom and use my Ipod touch with Ipeng's app. I was a prime candidate to add to the line-up with a Touch, but will likely opt for a nettop computer given the following factors: -high price of the touch -relatively low price of 1080p playing nettops -I'm not an audiophile so the Touch's superior audio compared to nettop+AV amp is not a personal selling point although I can certainly see it is for others -the Touch is still unavailable (I likely would have purchased in December) -- grego.speiser grego.speiser's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11844 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74510 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

(That '/' could be an 'or' or for some 'and'...) One of the serious advantages of the SB lineup is that you -can- keep adding players as you realize how nice it is to have access to your library everywhere I would be curious to see mean and mode's on how many players are installed... I think after 6 months it would be less than 50% that have only one player. So get the Classic now, and when touch is out, add that to your lineup. Re: [slim] SB Classic Dented Box
$120 is a very nice price reduction. Whether the Classic is for you or you should wait for the Touch depends on your priorities and is a question only you can answer. The Classic would be a good choice if: - you're on a budget, - you're a casual listener and just want access to internet radio and music files on your computer, - you don't feel compelled to have the newest version of something, - you're happy with a simple remote (or other external interface) and don't need to see album art, - you don't want access to external USB drives direct from the unit. The Touch sounds like it'd be better if: - Sound is important. Beta testers report the Touch's sound quality is better than the Classic and may eliminate the need for external DACs and other mods many Classic users pursue. - The Touch does more. It can access an external USB drive without a server. - The Touch has a nice interface and display screen. - The Touch will natively play higher resolution files. There are other differences, but the above will give you a starting framework. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74687 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95
Hi. I have played around some more. Unfortunately I can't do screenshot and don't know what you call the different meus etc, so I hope you understand what i mean below, otherwise let me know and I will rephrase. Here goes: Main music-selection menu has no back-swipe but a back-icon instead. Is that not a legacy from before you invented the backswipe? Double click: main menu: to select eg artists I need to click twice. The first click just highlights it. Fine for e.g. highligting an album so you can click on one of the three add-to-playlist-buttons. But not in the higher levels of navigation. Other places I have noticed it: To select an internet service, and to open an "activity" in the service. E.g open my newsfeed in Facebook. When drilling down in the radio-menu. Problably several other places... I think I don't understand the use of the "keyboard" below the alphabet (great feature btw). when i clock I get a very small "popup" Rounded in one corner, but sort of cut off on the bottom and right side. Apparently it is for selecting .,: Probably usefull for some. But why not include more "special" characters? Hey, I just discovered there's a sleep function. Cool. I finally figured the sync out. It's hard to fit a lot of features in a small amount of space. Some learning curve is necesary. When I posted yesterday I hadn't spent much time on it. A minute or two more probably would have made me figure it out. But instructive vidoes sound like a good idea. The actions to get into the current playlist requires two steps. I think it would be better to have one icon on the now playing screen. And the icon to open the row of four icons: off, settings, players, playlist isn't really visually up to the rest of the ui I think. Thats all for now. I hope it is of some value to you. Oh, regarding the lefthand skin. I understand the design decision. And the layout doesn't bother me at all. But the right-swipe actually still does after a couple of hours of using 1.3. I will ofcourse get used to it eventually. At some point you suggested activating both left- and rightswipe at the same time. I think that would be a good idea, if not too difficult to implement. That is: in all locations were rightswipe causes a back-command, make a leftswipe do the same. Regards, Mogens -- Muele BR Mogens 1 Radio, 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Squeezeplay. Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?
I was looking at th cover size on iTunes Store, I thought it was larger than 600x600 but this seems to be the size currently used. The rationale behind this seems to be that a CD cover is 12cm square, about 4.73 inches. At 100dpi you need 473 pixels square. 100 dpi is not much when printing. I have a feeling that you could end up with a layout that could make for a printable catalog of the library, and I believe 300 dpi is more or less the baseline when printing in color ? I liked the demo of the iphoto browser in iPad. It reminded me of an itunes app I was using long ago, showing stacks of covers on the desktop, clicking a cover was controlling play on itunes, and the playlist itself was a stack of covers. Could be fun with shake-for-random... I still want SBS to offer better library browsability, ability to insert new songs after an album (instead of right after what's playing), ability to truncate the playlist at some point, ability to add server actions (like sync, enter sleep, volume up...) between songs. NB: since I don't have an ipod/phone, I only saw iPeng briefly. I don't really know what it does already. -- epoch1970 epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74581 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Add to all that - public domain movies. There is a ton of movies in the public domain now. Download and watch free. If you have a pc based dvr you can record and watch what you want when you want. If there was a device Squeezebox device like my media player I would buy one in a heartbeat. I've got multiple instances of SqueezeSlave-asio running as services on Windows 2k3SBS! It was quite easily really but there is a gotcha: You need to run the services using a "real" user account's credentials that you have previously logged in as and ran all of the Squeezeslave's from the command-line. This allows you to configure the instances of asio4all that pop up. Once you've done that you can run the services (I use srvany from the Windows Server Resource Kit). Don't try to use the local system account for multi-asio as there's no way to configure asio4all. I tried copying some registry keys to the system account but that didn't work. I did however have multiple instances of non-asio running flawlessly using the system account without any problems at all. I used a seperate copy of SqueezeSlave for each instance. I don't know if it's essential but I thought it might help asio4all distinguish between the multiple instances of SS. -- indifference_engine indifference_engine's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20698 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63966 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?
Although there are a ton of things you could do, I would keeping to the basic UI design you already have but with the swipe-away screens kept visible in separate panels (especially the track progress toaster and the playlist). I am less sure about keeping the devices/servers/sync groups screen visible but I would consider it for landscape mode. On the other hand, to avoid clutter and accidental key presses you might want to keep it as a swipe-on screen. Obviously, you would want to scale the various panels appropriately, and give suitable room for album artwork. The only thing I would like is for is for the album browsing screen to use the screen real estate to show a *large* grid of album covers. I'd like to see at least 24 album covers at once. It will be best if 100% of the screen is used for a cover art grid when you are browsing for an album to play. Otherwise keep to at least 2/3 of the screen in landscape mode for the album art grid and allow drag-and-drop of an album onto the playlist window taking up the other 1/3 of the space. -- dsdreamer -- "Dreamer, easy in the chair that really fits you..." dsdreamer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12588 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74581 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I can access my music library, select a track, on the controller it appears to play (ie. the track pointer moves along) but no sound. [slim] Some Good News For a Change
Hi All Just a short note to say that "After upgrade and new router, everything working great" Was having problems with 2 wireless SB3's re-buffering, and the Duet only about 75% reliable This was really ruining the SB experience. After doing some troubleshooting and moving/replacing my wireless access point I now have music nirvana back again. Upgraded server to Version: 7.3.4 - 28402, did the firmware upgrade, replaced 8yr old D-Link router with a new Linksys WRT54GL and hardwiring my Duet receiver to the router, things are back to normal. Internet radio streams great and music plays flawlessly. Have come to this conclusion, wireless routers don't last forever (the signal was becoming progressively worse as time went on) So if you are having re-buffering problems it could be you router and I recommend the Linksys WRT54GL (nice out of the box and can't wait to try Tomato firmware on it) I am back to music bliss with my 2 SB3s and the Duet. Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool
Hi all, Just like to report my findings using Net::UDAP to configure a SBR on a wired LAN with DHCP-assigned ipaddr to point to the SqueezeNetwork and stream music from there. The perl code doesn't seem to work on Mac OS X Leopard. It seems the discovery mechanism is the problem. Nothing seems to happen when I ran `discover'. No info messages showing any activity. Also tried running broadcast_test.pl on OS X but that also didn't work. However, I tried again from a Windows XP machine and all went smoothly. To point the SBR to the SqueezeNetworks service I just did a DNS lookup of www.squeezenetwork.com and used the first ip addr in the result (66.151.159.227). In summary, these are the commands I used: Code: set interface=1 set lan_ip_mode=1 set lan_gateway=192.168.253.254 set primary_dns=192.168.253.17 set secondary_dns=210.130.1.1 set server_address=66.151.159.227 set squeezecenter_address=66.151.159.227 save_data reset After that, I was able to see and control the SBR on mysqueezebox.com. How awesome is that!
