Ultraviolet has a library of over 400,000 tracks... you may want to ask him. The main problem with such large libraries is that (aside from scanning which is going to take a while) some lists such as "all tracks in a genre" are going to be HUGE. They are going to create quite a bit of network traffic too. The Web UI running on the SBS machine may be the best front-end for massive libraries, since it would minimise the network traffic. -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... If the IP addresses are different and the MAC address are different, I would probably start by deleting all of the player settings from the server. You'll have to reconfigure each player's settings after you do this. Player settings for the server are kept in the server.prefs file. If you open the file you'll see sections like: Code: _client:00:04:20:05:d0:d4: _ts_activeFont: 1265464741 _ts_activeFont_curr: -1 ... transitionType: 0 treble: 50 volume: 100 _client:00:04:20:06:4c:57: ... volume: 88 _ts_allowedHosts: 1257796832 _ts_artfolder: 1257796832 Everything that is indented under a '_client:' line are the settings for that player, up until the next unindented line. I would stop Squeezebox Server, edit the server.prefs file and remove all of the _client sections. In the same directory as server.prefs, delete the player playlist files with names like 'clientplaylist_00042005d0d4.m3u. Then restart the server and see if things are any better. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75209 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

One other thing that I just thought of: Is it possible that the Boom has the same IP address as the server? Are you using DHCP? If so, make sure you don't give out addresses that might be statically assigned to computers or devices on the network. Usually you can designate the address range for the DHCP server, such as those running on routers. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75209 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Anyone have over 100,000 tracks in their library?
Some of my beta testers use very large libraries even with a ReadyNAS, although it's a pain. Your HW definitely sounds powerful enough. There's a few things to consider WRT iPeng: 1. iPeng caches long lists. This helps a lot with browsing after it has done so but can slow things down during the process. It does so after each change to your library only. 2. With this size of a library you definitely want to set "Prevent Sleep Mode" or "keep Connection" in Settings->iPeng settings at least until the caching is done (for convenience use "keep connection"). You can see caching is done if the blue progress indicator in the "Albums" view finishes. 3. Make sure you don't have a virus scanner interfere with your index files. That's a known issue especially with McAfee. See http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-the-iphone-skin-for-squeezecenter/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/known-issues/ The largest library I've seen myself had 247.000 tracks and took somewhere around 5-6 min for cache syncing in iPeng with a fast server. Time is pretty much exclusively determined by server performance. 7.5.0 embedded beta will speed things up a LOT wrt these queries. But it's not perfectly reliable yet. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75205 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

In the attached thread, P Dixon explains that 1/256 or multiples are used down to -30db. In the old 40 step volume days (2005) he had to argue with Sean & Dean to get it corrected to be this way). Further volume reduction after that bit resolution accuracy is compromised. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28133&highlight=volume+steps&page=2 The thing I don't know is whether replaygain (if used) also follows these adjustment rules to protect bit resolution. Some people may tell you that it won't. But I have an SB2, with the same screen and I allowed it to set in the Date & Time screensaver for a number of months at maximum brightness and the pixels at the center of the display are noticeably dimmer than those toward the sides. Unfortunately, the choices for brightness settings don't quite align with my usage patterns. There are the following settings (note that 'Power Off' really means 'Standby', since the Squeezebox always remains powered on): * Power On Brightness. This is the setting used when the SB comes out of standby and when a user is actively using the remote to navigate menus or through the music library. I set this to the brightest setting for greatest visibility while doing something with the remote. * Idle Brightness. This is the setting used when a user is not actively using the remote. After a timeout period with no user input, the brightness shifts to this setting. Note that 'idle' is only in reference to user input activity, not whether music is playing. * Power Off Brightness. This is the setting used when the Squeezebox is in standby mode. My problem with this approach is that when music is playing I often want to read the Now Playing display. Which means a relatively bright setting, and (for me) brightest is best. But it also means that when the Squeezebox sits for 20+ hours each day not playing any music it will be sitting at this brightness level. Two less than ideal workarounds that I've found are: 1) Use the Brightness button on the remote to increase the brightness while listening to music and try to remember to set it back to a lower level when finished. 2) Set the Power Off Brightness to a low level and remember to power off the Squeezebox when not in use. This is difficult, as there's actually very little reason to ever power off the Squeezebox, especially if you have both the 'off' and 'stopped' screensavers set to the Date & Time screensaver. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75219 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Another workaround is the Fuzzy Time plugin, which allows you to set the Date and Time screensaver to shift back and forth across the screen, thus spreading the wear on the pixels more evenly. ajkidle;516712 Wrote: > Do I need to worry about having the display brightness set to the max > setting (4) on an SB3? Is this going to result in burn-in or premature > aging of the display? Well, when people asked this question two years ago the typical answer was: "the SB3's VFD display has a half life of 100,000 hours, so if you used the SB3 screen at full brightness, 24/7, for 11 years straight, your SB3 screen would be half as bright as the day you bought it". The general idea being, other SB3 components will likely die before the screen does. But with the rash of recent SB3 issues I'm seeing on here, including display issues, I'm starting to question the 100,000 hours idea. :( Perhaps the screen failures are unrelated to the VFD screen itself, I dunno, I'm no electrics engineer. Also, not knowing how many SB3's are out there, even what is perceived as a "rash" of SB3 issues may be a very small segment of the SB3 market. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75219 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] SB3 Display Brightness
I have a used SB1 which has the text "Problem! ..." burnt in by its previous owner. It must have been sitting with an error message for days, and the bad thing is that this screen is static and always displayed at full brightness. Now when it comes to display something that starts with a "P", the first letter is barely visible. :( As is the right arrow symbol in the bottom right corner. toby10;516732 Wrote: > Well, when people asked this question two years ago the typical answer > was: > "the SB3's VFD display has a half life of 100,000 hours, so if you used > the SB3 screen at full brightness, 24/7, for 11 years straight, your SB3 > screen would be half as bright as the day you bought it". This would be true if you had the entire display lit all the time. Unfortunately this is not the case, the pixels wear out differently according to their use. So you have some pixels that are still like new, while others have already significantly faded, which is much more irritating than a screen that has become less bright as a whole. A "clock screensaver", for example, is actually an oxymoron. It is all but a screen -saver-, it is more of a screen -destroyer- since it stresses a small number of pixels all the time. A scrolling display or one that switches between different screens should cause less damage. The most efficient way to save a screen, however, is still to set its brightness to zero. -- usch usch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33389 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75219 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95
The playlist arrows are gone. Use left-swipe and right-swipe to navigate. the timeout value is now fixed. If SlimCtrl queries take longer than that, your server is too slow. It would no fun if things were taking that long. Note: Long queries are 'split' by SlimCtrl. For example, 50 albums at a time, 10 folders at a time. If 50 albums take > 10 seconds than 500 albums will take > 100 seconds. Or 200 Folders > 3 minutes. Folder queries get some extra for the server appearently needs to scan the folder structure first. Actually it's even less. As you said: Leaner protocol. Plus I never query all tagged parameter. But of course, if more than two people complained about timeouts I would change it. So far only few have. Re: [slim] Anyone have over 100,000 tracks in their library?
Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to try the new settings with ipeng today. Does the duet controller also use a cache? It seems to take just as long each time I try and access a large genre even if I just had it loaded. It isn't very useful to us at the present time. I tried to use the embedded squeezeserver beta, but every time I tried a version, it wouldn't find my library, so I went back to the production version. I even pointed it to the correct directories in the add-in settings, and it would conduct a scan and not find anything. It sounds like that is the only hope for a significant performance enhancement. I am testing the system on one receiver right now for a house that we are building and moving into in a few months. I hope to have 6-8 receivers hardwired into my network if I can get some decent performance. Pippin, my wife downloaded ipeng the other day and was able to successfully use it without any instructions. That says a lot about the functionality you have put into the app. Thanks for creating it. -- longhornalum longhornalum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=36478 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75205 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Hi, +90k songs, 3 SB, 1 Boom, 1 Controller, ipeng, Readynas NVX = no real problem but my wife wants multiple library. I use Lazy search 90% of time with IR remote but both ipeng(-) and controler(+) are pretty fast since I use 742. I found Windows SB server to be slower than UX based machines. If you're not into UX, you can run UX from within a virtualbox headless just for SB. In any case just provide a backdoor to escape in such situations. I build here a double handycap. First the bridge from the squeeze to etrayz. Why not a message if someone try 3 or 4 times. and than a pointer goto confg and give a longer time?. There will be more and more use of Etrayz and when we hopefully have the player for Xtreamer. I have a little over 187K tracks in FLAC (about 16890 CDs). Once the library is scanned, I have not been seeing any issues. My suggestion would be to make sure the PC is only used as an SBS Server and if you can handle it, convert the OS to Linux.
