If we are only talking about announcements of the latest "truth" (to
clarify the latest "rumors") I'm not worried, this is really needed.

I was more worried if all tricks and tips that should be put on
wiki.slimdevices.com instead gets documented on various community
member sites, this makes it a lot harder to find the information.

Maybe you could ensure that any tricks and tips posted on your site
also is copied to wiki.slimdevices.com ?

How would you like the information, is there some way to register it on
your blog or should we just use mail or some other method ?

Something that I've felt lately is also that it would be a good idea to
collect all questions which people want answers on but only Logitech can
answer. Issues repeated by many members are of course not lost because
they are repeated all over again but some issues are only posted once
or twice and Logitech employees never spots them due to the high amount
of posts in the forum. Of course, it could be discussed if there is any
point in helping Logitech to spot these issues if they don't have the
time/resources to answer them. Just to make it clear, I'm not talking
about questions regarding future products, this is obviously something
Logitech is going to keep for themselves and never give us any answers
on until the product is released.

They don't perform well at all under load, which is pretty sad. It's
like they insist on doing connection tracking and then fall over when
their connection tables fill.

Bizarre and makes no sense at all to me, because as best I could tell,
the Sonicwalls are simply Linux or BSD boxes with some icky custom
software. There is no reason they shouldn't be able to move around a
TON more packets. But.. they don't.

Maybe massively simplifying rules could help, but when they started
having bonus deletions (as in click to delete one rule with the horrid
web interface, and watch it delete a couple others for no reason...)
they became a "don't touch this or it will all explode" sort of thing.

In this case, there's no point in trying to use GE anyway since none of
the SB products support it. You may get away with 10/100 especially if
your runs are much shorter than the 90m allowed for CAT5.

It might but your audio quality will definably suffer. Expect dropouts

Ugh, you do NOT want to know the words I would use to describe my
experiences with SonicWall. Firewalls that drop packets under load are
Very Bad, especially when the load is really around 15Mpbs or so. It
was so overloaded the web administration pages would barely load.

Deleting a rule on the SonicWalls would "sometimes" delete other rules.
There is no "save my config to a tftp server" or "dump the config in
text so I can look at it.." You need to use their horrid web interface
for everything, and repeated 'print this page' to print out the config.

If I said what I thought about SonicWalls, I would be booted from the
forum forever.

That said, the SonicWalls at work have been replaced with a Linux box.

>

Then I'm not surprised things drop. Squeezeboxes are not smart: they
need to talk to a server for 'command and control'. The server can
tell them "go get a stream from this URL" but... you need a server to
do that much.

How are you telling the SB to connect to a URL without SBS?

Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?

2010-04-27 Thread Mnyb

I overheated my WRT54GL when it when sitting on top of my computer.
I moved it and it was ok.

I use tomato software with it I have not tweaked the wifi ro the
highest setting 80 -100mW is enough.

The overheating did not start until i got more squeezeboxes :-)

But a better location solved the problem.

I'm redoing my network right now, as every port was full and I want to
wire more stuff.

I discovered an underrated item the switch, eventually I plan to have
all wired stuff connected trough gigabit switches.
So that internal traffic between wired things never have to go trough
the routers internal switch (for now I use 2 ports on it).

I also use static ip an all non mobile things as servers and wired
players and desktop, so I figure that I will have most of the network
intact even if the router goes down .

Sorry for hijacking the tread with similar issues.

My linksys is also getting old I think.

What do you think about the "ASUS RT-N16" .
Spec looks decent inbuilt gigabit switch fast N networking enough cpu
to actually do the switching effortlessly 2 USB ports.
And capable of running DD wrt firmware .

I do love the tomato router firmware, but it's basically a one person
operation so tomato have not got into N networking yet.

[slim] Squeezebox randomly drops station

2010-04-27 Thread hellbringer616

I have a few Squeezeboxs we are testing out for one of our business
clients to get music into their buildings.
So we set up a custom radio using shoutcast and winamp as a test run,
and all was great!

But now they keep droping the stream..

So far i've tried pretty much everything i can think of on the
winamp/shoutcast side of things.. it will run 24/7 if i stream it to a
computer. But the squeezeboxes will drop it still. about 5 or 6 times a
day, pretty much at random..

I feel i've narrowed it down to either their slow internet (Frantional
T1)

Or their business class router (i believe it's called a sonicwall, But
i'd have to check)

Called logitech and all they did was whine that i'm not using their
squeeze server software..

So, you guys are my last hope! :D

erland,

I think it'd be great if the community started a project like this as
well- if it was hosted by logitech. Even better- if logitech took the
torch and started communicating with the community themselves.

My goal with this blog was to give the community a sense of connection
to what's going on that feels better than random (and often
contradictory) posts on the forum. My goal is to update my blog with
the latest news directly from logitech, so people can stop speculating-
which in my opinion, does worse for the community.

Basically, there needs to be a leader.

In my opinion, that should be logitech. I am critical of how logitech
is doing this after they took over slim devices (I've always loved the
communication from slim employees, but it seems they're in the dark
about production and decisions too)..

If this blog convinces logitech to do it, then I'll simply close my
blog. My job will be finished. I am doing this because I want to see
these products succeed, and communication is key.

In the mean time, anybody who wants to help I'd love help gathering
news.

**Disclaimer**
I really appreciate the communication from the direct squeezebox
employees, don't get me wrong. I just feel like logitech is handling
communication poorly, and our occasional product updates with mickey
still haven't gotten us closer to when we can get a SB receiver...

Re: [slim] SB Updates Blog & Email Lists

2010-04-27 Thread erland

First of all this is not critique, I've thought about doing similar
things like this myself. I think I understand why you do this and I
completely understand your frustration, but I'm not sure it will be
good for the community and product on longer term. I think most
community member sees exactly the same things as you express on your
blog, and it's all very frustrating to all of us and I'm pretty sure
this also includes all Logitech employees that are visible on these
forums.

However, it feels like it would be better if we could find a way to
handle this on this forum and on the wiki. It should be easy to make an
announcement wiki page which the community could maintain on
wiki.slimdevices.com, using this we can also improve the quality of the
current wiki by adding more tips, trix and other stuff which people want
to know about. I think everyone have write permissions to the wiki, so
it should also make it possible for more than a single person to
maintain it.

People that want mail notifications, can easily subscribe to changes to
a specific announcement wiki page.

We could accomplish a lot if people from the community started to
together improve the contents on wiki.slimdevices.com.

Once again, it's not really critique to your idea with a separate blog,
I'm just suggesting that there might be an alternative method to
accomplish the same thing that would keep the community together
instead of splitting it up on several sites. You are of course free to
host this on your own blog site instead, but for the community and
product I think it would be better if you handled it trough the
official wiki here at wiki.slimdevices.com.

It's fantastic to see how much senior members in this community cares
for this product, Slim Devices really succeeded to unite people in a
unique way and made them care for their product. It's so frustrating to
see everything going downhill and I'm really hoping the trend will
change soon because the Touch and Radio are really excellent products
with a promising future.

Even though it's frustrating to see what Logitech management, sales and
support organisation does and doesn't do, I think for the long term
success of this community and the products which we all love, it would
be preferred if we focused on trying to find ways to help Logitech.
Logitech sales, support and management organization will learn, we just
have to give them some time. The focus in the future will definitely be
different than what it has been in the past, but I'm pretty sure they
are going to learn that this community is good and important for their
products, we just have to give them some time.

Also remember that most employees from Logitech available on these
forum originally comes from Slim Devices and have the exact same
feeling for these products and this community as we do, the people in
the management and sales organization have a different background and
need some time to learn.

Yes, I know it's frustrating.

Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?

2010-04-27 Thread aubuti

The router probably is just not up to moving so much data, so I'd
recommend replacing it with a different model. I had a Netgear router
that worked fine until I got Squeezeboxes. After that it would
sometimes lock up, either when streaming FLAC or even when copying huge
batches of FLACs from my laptop to my server. I put it down to design or
hardware weaknesses that are never pushed to the limit with normal
network use, but pushed past that limit by audio streaming.

I could give it another go.

I love them. Ok they aren't massively powerful but they can cope with
my mp3's. I took one of them and put it in a rack case with a built in
IR emitter - the idea was to put them all in a rack and control them
discretely - never got round to that :( . I still have all 5 of mine
out and in service. The display for slimrio is pretty useless but with
somehting like the SB Controller or the Joggler in control that doesn't
matter. Sync with them is terrible and they hate homeplugs (because the
networking chip in the rio is buggy and doesn't negotiate properly).

I'm not sure if you can execute scripts from flash. If you can then it
should be relatively easy to get the screen positioning correct (to
show home button). However, my thinking on this is not to integrate
with the flash interface but simply replace the flash with something
that can call any application/script. For me that would mean much more
flexibility. I don;t know much about flash but I've played with HaXe
and aswing on the Joggler with some success. The only thing is I'm not
sure I want to learn flash.

If I'm truly honest, if Android ran fast enough on the Joggler then I'd
be there running it. Until then I'm looking for something that's
flexible enough. If that means putting together some sort of front end
then so be it :D

Just wondering, is it even possible to integrate this with the standard
Flash UI on the Joggler?

I, perhaps incorrectly, presumed that everyone had sshd/scp running on
their joggler. If so it should take < 1 minute to get up and running -
you don't even need to stop the standard interface first.

If you need any pointers just shout..

now... shall I give android a try :D

Android does look very nice on the joggler. Pity about the gui speed at
the moment but definitely one to watch!

You're right, the GUI is very slow! Excellent work so far though. Is
Android the only OS that uses framebuffer drivers? I'm just wondering
why this hasn't been looked at before.

btw, can we try out SqueezeCommander on this build?

You'll need to export the libs from the tarball (include the tango ones
too)

I guess the only way to show you it's the joggler is to take a crappy
picture.. (see attached)

I don't know what the upload limit is be I suppose I could stick the
final tarball here if needs be.

The CLI (or even Json) is nice too, if you want to automate stuff. I

2010-04-27 Thread mutant_matt

The big improvement (and only noticeable improvement) for me when going
to my current 6.3.3 from 6.3.2 (using only SB2s and an SB3), was the
better syncing between devices (in that, rather than restarting the
current track when you power on another device, that is set to sync, it
does it's best attempt mid-track (which in itself is near perfect), and
then does a "proper" sync at the start of the following track).

This IMHO was worth upgrading for, for better usability and better WAF
;) :)

Not sure when hi-rez (sox) transcoding was introduced, but it's in
6.3.3, and I'm starting to use it now, which is a nice to have, until I
upgrade to a Touch or similar, in the future.

Matt :)

I've not tried SqueezePlay/SBS on the original OS, but it should work,

I have had situations where we had to run networking over cat3 due to
very old buildings. Most modern 100mbps PHYs are good enough that it
should work reasonably well. Gigabit on the other hand is not going to
work well. It might get a link but you will get mostly packet loss.
You will get some packet loss, but nothing TCP can't deal with, and it
won't be an issue for the squeezebox.

Some ideas:
license agreement with spotify to use the same method as with pandora
etc...
or implement basic spotify in the controlling software and send the
audio between devices using existing drm. Drop support in the firmware
(give the user a choice though).

testify is open source code that uses closed source libspotify
libraries
(or I guess the open spotify libraries, ie hacked despotify).

But it almost seems like you have decided it is impossible. I guess I

Re: [slim] Improved Squeezebox config availible for Harmony users.

2010-04-27 Thread squeezyjim

Yup, that's what I did in the end, I felt sure I was missing something,
but alas no.

I went for the Harmony One BECAUSE it was by Logitech, my assumption
being that although its a lot more expensive than the other one I was
looking at, it should be no problem with compatibility with my
squeezeboxes and it should be easy peasy to get them to talk to each
other. Hah, more fool me, you live and learn.

Shouldn't ALL logitech products with an IR control be automatically
added to the Logitech Harmony One software application, first,
automatically, by process, before any other manufacturers get added?
When you consider the pricepoint of these products, and how long they
have been in the offing, surely that's not asking much?

...and why would I choose "Digital Music Server"? The SB Radio is not a
Digital Music Server at all, and the Touch is only that if you want to
make it so (which I don't). I knew I didnt want to control my actual
Digital Music Server, which is in a cupboard and has no IR anyway, so
that's just confusing. Its like calling something Toaster when you mean
Fridge.

Just seems it would be better if one group of Logitech would email the
other group of Logitech, a simple config file for each Squeezebox
product, (or just one as the OP seems to indicate it would work for
all) to add into the software directly, instead of relying on people
counter-intuitively installing a 'Digital Music Server' device, calling
it an SB3 and then going back in and renaming it and reprogramming half
the buttons.

That simple solution would have prevented me from chasing my tail for
an hour looking for a logitech product in a Logitech piece of software
which *should* be there, but wasn't. Now I'm not convinced its
installed properly, as I don't get access to some of the other fancy
features described in this thread, which I have read from start to
finish looking for a solution to this. Pfff.

Anyway, thanks for the clarification,

Cheers
Jim

I've created an "empty image" for the Android build.
You can unpack it and dump it on the USB stick just like the Ubuntu
image and you will have the 3 (empty) partitions.

The file is only ~7kb small, but it will expand to 4gb.

http://www.flattermann.net/files/joggler/android-joggler-empty-partitions-4gb.img.tar.bz2

After that, copy the contents of the torrent download to the first
partition.

Re: [slim] OpenFrame remote for SB?

2010-04-27 Thread flattermann

Well, I've not uploaded a complete image, because it takes way longer to
download/put it on the USB key, because large parts of the image will be
"empty".

I think the easiest way is to download an Ubuntu CD, boot your PC from
this CD in a Live-Ubuntu (that does not change anything on your
harddisk).

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

After booting do this:

* Insert the USB key
(* One or more windows will pop up (the current USB key contents))
* Open System / Admin / Partition Editor
* Select your USB key (/dev/sdX) in the upper-right corner
WARNING: BE CAREFUL TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT DEVICE! OTHERWISE YOU MAY
ACCIDENTLY ERASE YOUR HARDDISK!
* On all partitions on the stick (/dev/sdXn), right-click and select
"Unmount"
* Now, clear the stick: Device / Create Partition Table
* Now, create the 3 partitions as mentioned here:
http://www.jogglerwiki.info/index.php?title=Android_Prebuild_Image

But I'll prepare an empty image with the 3 partitions for your
convenience. :-)
When this is ready, you can put this image to the USB key and add the
contents of the torrent file to the first partition.

and unzip it.

Please provide the output from these commands;

c:\>squeezeslave-asio-pa1485-0.9-153.exe -L

c:\>squeezeslave-asio-pa1495-0.9-153.exe -L

Then run the below command and add whatever additional options you've
been using. If it works, play 30 seconds of a song, stop the stream
and press Q to exit. Don't worry if the display gets messed up, I just
need the log files.

c:\> squeezeslave-asio-pa1485-0.9-153.exe -D -dslimaudio_output
-Ypa1485.log

Then do the same using the other version.

c:\> squeezeslave-asio-pa1495-0.9-153.exe -D -dslimaudio_output
-Ypa1495.log

Zip the pa1485.log and pa1495.log log files and attach them to a post.

No, that is plain wrong.
Spotify can be on any computer in the same network, just make sure the
ip adress you are pointing to is the ip address of the computer playing
spotify.

I do this with spotify on my laptop and the server on a separate
machine all the time.

Thanks for the fast response.

Actually, if I turn on my PC I can feed my stereo directly. In that
case there would be no real need to add the sound from a YouTube vid to
the queue of the Squeezebox. :D

Not as you said, but it is possible to send whatever is playing on your
PC speakers to the squeeze. Normally this would not be in sync with
what is on the screen but in your case you don't seem to care. You
could use wavinput plugin to do that.

[slim] Play YouTube (Sound) with Squeezebox Server?

2010-04-27 Thread Flrbb

Just a simple question:
Is it (somehow - e.g. with a plugin) possible to submit a YouTube link
to the Squeezebox? So that the soundsignal is played via speakers? (I
do not care about the pictures in this case. :)

Or even better: search YouTube directly by typing in keywords in the
remote from the Squeezebox Duet?

Re: [slim] OpenFrame remote for SB?

2010-04-27 Thread flattermann

FYI: The new Android image supports ethernet, touchscreen, sound, wifi,
shutdown/reboot by touch...

The only key problem left is the slow GUI. I would appreciate anyone
helping to solve this GUI issue. (Join #mer on irc.freenode.net!)

If you want to try it, we've created a prebuilt image that you can put
on an USB stick:

(The orginal Joggler system will not be changed, Android boots
completely from the USB stick!)

It would have to be a retail licensed copy of XP, as OEM licenses
aren't transferable between machines. So you couldn't use an XP
product key from an old Dell being thrown away and be able to activate
it.

Get VMWare for the MacBook and find someone with a copy of XP that they
aren't using anymore. With VMWare on the Mac you can even have
dbPowerAmp appear as if it is a normal Mac app.

[slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?

2010-04-27 Thread GRC

My Linksys WAG54GX2 wireless gateway router has started to overheat and
power down when I connect more than one device to it now. Overheating
routers is a known issue but I wondered if anyone else is having a
similar problem in a music streaming context.

I have a desktop PC, laptop PC music server and a SLIMP3 connected to
the router by ethernet, with an SB3 Classic and Boom on wireless. Music
is usually synched across all devices.

Apparently the router can't handle the throughput and dies. I'm already
on my second PSU as well. Had to play some real CDs last night!

Thinking of moving to a new WAG120N if it's EOL for the existing unit.

Any ideas / comments?

Thanks

GRC

[slim] Recent changes to alarms?

2010-04-27 Thread Phil Meyer
I've recently discovered some annoyances that I hadn't noticed before - I think
they must be fairly new.

SB3, SBS 7.5.1.

1. When alarm is playing, if I press pause, it goes into power off mode, rather
than just pausing.

2. When alarm is stopped (eg. press power off, or pause), the volume returns to
pre-alarm volume level.

I preferred it when the alarm volume level remained. eg. if I play ambient
music late at night at low volume, and then alarm goes off at high volume,
later in the day if I were to play music, it's more reasonable to play at high
volume level than low volume level. It's a bit unexpected for the level to
change.

That's interesting.

In theory you can get reliable 100 Mbps from Cat3, but that probably
requires some special hardware in each end of the cable.
