I did try that, but though it didn't have the same errors there were
still problems. So I resorted to a de-install.

Re: [slim] SB3 won't play, SBR does

2011-08-28 Thread Grumpy Bob

I think this has something to do with playing Ogg Vorbis files - if I
try to play an ogg file, the player hangs and needs to be rebooted
before it can play any other file.

In SBS settings, there's a page for file types OGG is set to:
AIFF: sox
FLAC: sox
MP3: sox/lame
OGG Vorbis: Native

Is there some issue with those?

Re: [slim] SB3 won't play, SBR does

It likely is connecting to MySB (though you may not want too), there was
a bug where the SB3 would get a blank screen when getting an update from
MySB.
Connecting to MySB will force an update to 7.6.1, connecting back to
your SBS will force a downgrade to 7.5.2

When connecting SB3 to MySB try pressing & holding the Brightness
button to accept the update.

Re: [slim] How to make musicIP work

make sure the musicIP server is up and running before SBS is started.
Otherwise SBS does not load the MIP plugin.
In simple terms, verify the MIP server responds on localhost:10002 with
your browser. Then restart SBS and you should be good to go.

Re: [slim] How to make musicIP work

2011-08-28 Thread paul44birch

Hi epoch1970 and thanks for the tip. As I am not too technical please
bear with me. Having istalled MusicIP i now have a desktop icon for
it. I have therefore stopped SBS and opened MusicIP via the desktop
icon. I have then restarted SBS. Unfortunatelly I am still unable to
see or use musicIP as there is no reference to it against any albums or
tracks. (i did a rescan as well)

I have taken instructions from
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Integrating_MusicIP_with_SqueezeCenterThis
also refers to to a mip headless which I think allows it to run in the
background but the instructions lose me. There is also a site
http://www.spicefly.com/squeezeboxmip.html which I think i need to
check but again as a music fan first some of the technical jargon makes
it difficult to follow.
I run SBS from a PC desktop running windows xp. Also what do you mean
by "verify the MIP server responds on localhost:10002"

Cheers

You can disable native playback and force the server to transcode all
ogg, If I remember correctly the ogg decoder in the SB3 is not able to
play -all- possible ogg files, it has some limits , very high
compression is one, I think.
So maybe the Server stand a better chance at it .

Re: [slim] Blocking Incoming Connections...

2011-08-28 Thread staresy

OK my cunning plan didn't work as the ISP seems to allocate completley
random public ip addresses.

So, after a bit of reading it seems that SSH might be the way to go but
I haven't got a clue how to set this up or, indeed, if it is possible
with my set up. Can anyone offer any advise here?

My setup is:

- remote SB3, no PC, just connected to a wireless router and the
internet
- dynamic public IP address on this router
- at home, Windows Home Server running SC, connected to router and
internet
- again, dydnamic IP at this end

If this isn't poossble, what are the worst consequences of leaving the
two ports for remote access unprotected?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [slim] How to make musicIP work

2011-08-28 Thread epoch1970

I see. What you want is running the "MIP headless" thing, that is a Java
server that has a user interface through a web browser. SBS interacts
with this server to generate the playlists, it must be running.
I meant checking this server was running by pointing your browser to
http://localhost:10002

I remember I was pretty peeved with the documentation when I tried
setting up MIP.
I don't use sugarcube, only MIP and the standard SBS plugin. But I
think this page:
http://www.spicefly.com/squeezeboxmip/28-mipheadless7.html
can help you in getting a MIP server to run and respond on port 10002.

I use a linux machine so I can't hand you my particular setup as an
example.

Words of advice for the next steps:
1) analysis;
- In the slimdevices wiki page there is a case for using "genpuid" to
analyze files. genpuid can archive its findings within the tags of
music files, which seems a good idea since analysis is such a long
process.
I'd recommend against this. I had genpuid destroy some of my tags, and
also version issues between MIP and genpuid.
Just leave genpuid alone, go to http://localhost:10002, enter the path
to your music files and have MIP discover and analyse the files.
There is one thing you might want to do: specify the location for the
MIP database (in mmm.ini), and backup that file from time to time.
- Moving files around means analysis must be performed again (since
archiving is risky). You'd better be pleased with your file hierarchy
beforehand.
- Re-analysis of moved files means the MIP DB will show a duplicate.
There is a sorry way of removing duplicates (or deleted files) using
MIPs web interface. I think it entails clicking "add music" (sic) and
then "refresh songs". Or the other way around. The Total Songs figure
should decrease in the end. (The brute force way is to remove the MIP
database file.)

2) integration with SBS:
- In the standard plugin preferences, you have the choice using the
standard MIP plugin to import only signature data into SBS and keep the
rest of the meta data as seen from the SBS scanner, or to import all
meta data from MIP and disregard the SBS scanner. I use the 1st option,
that is I mostly rely on SBS. It is faster.
Also, there were issues with file path using accented characters in the
past, and a full import of MIP data left many files out in my case. I
don't know if the issue is still there (SBS 7.6 has improved things I
think), but have a look at the SBS server log when importing. If it
fails to find files with funny characters, the workaround is to use
plain 7-bit ascii instead for the file names. Takes a bit of time but
you'd need to do it once only.
- In the standard SBS plugin preferences, you'll see settings like mix
duration that are equivalent to some preferences you can set in mmm.ini
or through the web interface of MIP Mix Settings under localhost:10002.
The SBS settings *override* whatever you think you've defined within
MIP. In mmm.ini I only care for the path of the database. In the ugly
web interface of MIP I only care for the "add music", "refresh songs"
and "start validation" buttons.

And since MIP analysis is so slow, and you want to run a "clear and
rescan" from SBS each time to make sure all is well, I'd suggest
working on a very small test library until you see it works well.

All in all MIP works and SBS does all it can. But nevertheless MIP is
closed, abandoned software so you need to learn its quirks and work
around it.

[slim] Streaming: monthly capacity usage

2011-08-28 Thread Atlantic

I've been playing with some numbers to see what streaming uses, in terms
of monthly usage. If anyone's interested, I've created a small
spreadsheet which gives a rough idea of how much of a monthly limit
regular streaming might use.

Actually, I got a bit of a shock. Even only streaming 4 hours a day,
at 128k, would use approximately 8GB per month. That is a significant
proportion of a 10GB service, for example (and I'd previously measured
some web browsing at around 1GB per month, per person, so 10GB doesn't
go far, really), and certainly exceeds a typical 3G/mobile service
contract such as I've variously seen at 1GB or 3GB monthly.

I've attached the spreadsheet; there are two versions in the zip, one
is LibreOffice compatible (.ods) and the other is Excel compatible
(.xls).

3G/mobile carriers include 'upstream' traffic in the loading
calculation, and so do some (not all) fixed-line providers, so there is
a facility in the sheet to select whether upstream loading should be
Included, or Excluded. Other inputs (all the inputs are shaded 'blue')
are available for stream rate, and (average) hours per day of streaming.
There are a couple of other assumptions for the IP overhead (I've set
this to 15% but you can change it) and for the upstream loading (which
I set to 5% but, again, you can change it).

And any corrections would be very welcome, by the way.

regards, Atlantic

thanks. Interesting! For example, last month I used 6.18GB at home and
probably didn't stream any netflix movies last month, and I stream
music about 5-6 hours per day, with typically 4 hours of that at 64 or
lower (news stations, etc.). I also do some email and web use for 3
hours a day. So your spreadsheet predicts my real world use very well.

Fortunately my home provider has a 250GB cap. My ipad is a different
story (only 2.5 GB cap with 3G, but I only use for web and
emailstreaming big stuff only when on WIFI).

Re: [slim] Blocking Incoming Connections...

2011-08-28 Thread pallfreeman

Your ISP is assigning a random address. At both ends. Without some third
party to keep track of these addresses, neither end of your setup knows
which address to use to get to the other.

Dynamic DNS solves these problems to some extent. Check if your DSL
routers have the ability to register with a Dynamic DNS provider. You
might be able to get hold of some little utility to do this from your
PC, but it's the other end which really needs it.

I'm not sure why you think SSH can help. Surely it would have the same
problem, not knowing the addresses, as SBS has?

Probably, though, the worst that could happen is that someone who knows
what you're up to could get access to your SBS and loudly play you
Merzbow's greatest hits.

Don't recall your setup, but could you connect it to your Router via
ethernet (just temporarily as a test). You'll have to change the setup
from WIFI to ethernet when you do that, it is not automatic from just

player, mysb.com, or your WIFI connection (and possible interference

steps to take to improve that (or simply move to ethernet, powerline

Thanks Gary.

The Touch is hooked up to the hi-fi in the living room, with the router
in the study at the opposite end of the house.

After another spell unplugged it's working fine at the moment. Even if
I did have it connected to the router via ethernet there's no telling
how long I'd have to wait until the problem starts again; it could be
an hour, a day or a week, although today seems to have been the worst
so far. So I'm reluctant to try this at the moment.

I suppose I could just unplug it every time I'm not using it. I'd bet
money on that curing the problem, but it's not really as convenient. It
shouldn't start losing the connection to MySB just because I leave it on
standby.

I do still wonder if it's connected with the bugs in SBS 7.6.

Block does prevent/allow player connections.

You would at least want to enable the user/password feature. As I typed
earlier, you would do better to enable remote access to your WHS and
install a notifier on each end. That way, you would always be able to
access the settings of the webUI to get to the list of allowed
addresses. This way, you would also be able to completely disable
remote access by remotely using the web browser on your WHS machine to
change the router settings.

Note that the "default" port for RDP is 3389. When you make your router
rule, you can 'redirect' that:

For example direct port 5557 to port 3389
on your WHS. This will keep people who snoop your address on port 3389
from getting a "logon" from RDP. Then on the remote machine, you direct
RDP to connect to

xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa:5557

Your router follows the rule and sends the traffic to your WHS and
you're in.

SSH would be more secure but you
will still have to know the addresses...

Perhaps your router on the SB3 end can run openvpn ?
In this case, set it up as an openvpn "client", and have it try connect
continuously to somesuch.dyndns.com (the PC or the router at home)
On the PC or router at home run both openvpn and dyndns DNS daemon to
refresh the pointer to the IP used for home.
On the openvpn "server" instance use bridged mode to extend your home
network to the remote router and SB3. Player/server discovery will
work, playing FLAC files without rebuffering will probably be a bit
difficult, but everything else should work perfect.
On both sides use certificates to identify both ends and allow
connection. You may want to use a cipher for the tunnel (which will
hammer the router a bit) but if you don't the effect is that someone
listening on the connection will be able to read the data stream. In
this specific case I don't see this is an issue. Handshake always stays
secure by use of certificate/private key.
Openvpn is an ssl VPN, it is very robust and resilent to NAT.

I guess you can do about the same using ssh, certificates, map ports
and somehow use a daemon on the router to reconnect. But all this looks
so much like openvpn…

[slim] What is purpose of #EXTURL in playlist?

2011-08-28 Thread Swimmerbird123

I am moving my playlists (.m3u) from a headless Linux box on my network
to a Windows box. Each box runs its own copy of SBS under its own
operating system.

The playlists that I made on the Linux box (using its web interface
from a browser on a separate Windows machine) have only two lines per
playlist entry:
- an #EXTINF (with a -1 for the length and the track name)
- the track's file location with full path name under the Linux
system.

The playlists that I make from scratch on the Windows box (running SBS
and containing the music files) have three lines per playlist entry:
- a #EXTURL:file/// directive followed by the track's file location
in what seems to be Linux format (spaces replaced by the ASCII code
%20)
- a #EXTINF (with the actual length of the track and the track name)
- the track's file location in Windows format with a full path name

My question is, what does the #EXTURL directive do, and is it necessary
on playlists under windows? Searching the forums brings no hits. Is it
only used by SBS and only for certain configurations?

I am no longer using the Linux box and am moving all the playlists from
it to the Windows machine that is running SBS. I know I have to replace
all the file locations from the Linux box with their new locations on
the Windows box and change the "/" to "\". My question though is, do I
have to add a #EXTURL line to each entry of these playlists? They seem
to work OK on the Windows box without an #EXTURL entry as long as I
convert the file location. And is it important to have the proper
length of th track in the #EXTINF directive?

Thanks,
Swimmer

When listening to a "fresh" playlist, I also find it really annoying

Could be but I'd put my money on something in your local setup that is
hurting the signal. (otherwise there'd be a LOT more complaints...many
people have 7.6.1 working very well).

What WIFI signal strength does the player report? Also, use something
like NetStumbler or Vistumbler to check for local Wifi NETWORKS and
make sure you're on a different channel (far away as possible). I had
similar problems to yours on an older SB3 when I had intermitant WIFI
problems. If this is the case, you might want to consider powerplugs
to bring ethernet from the router to your SB Player.

Nick.
All my prevoius SB issues in the early days were all related to local
wifi issues, as soon as I changed to using "powerplugs" on those SB
devices in low signal parts of my house all the connectivity issues
went away - and for many years I have have had a rock solid
connectivity setup.

Re: [slim] MonkeySqueeze

2011-08-28 Thread Gingernut63

The following is a post I recently submitted on the MonkeySqueeze
Development forum. I'm posting it here to widen the posts distribution
and to advertise the development forum. Beta versions of the script are
also available for download. Click on the link below.

http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=59907&sid=34e0d59a4aa4a71dc647ee17cf1eda94

"Probably the greatest issue MonkeySqueeze faces is the buffering issue
between MediaMonkey and the Squeezebox system. Solve this issue and the
basic goals are achieved.

Before I go further I should state I'm writing this from a perspective
of a person who is not a MediaMonkey or Squeezebox expert but a person
who has a more than basic understanding of computers.

What is the problem? When MediaMonkey is linked to Squeezebox via
MonkeySqueeze there is a noticeable lag in the music playing on a
Squeezebox device. The lag usually ranges from 1 to 7 seconds depending
on file size, type etc... When a new track starts playing on MediaMonkey
the previous track can still be playing on the Squeezebox device and it
will abruptly finish to be replaced by the next piece of music. This is
exacerbated by tracks that have no lead out silence such as some
classical, opera, progressive rock etc... any music with gap less
tracks.

What is happening is a delay caused by the track being loaded by a
Squeezebox device before it plays (buffering) and delays in MediaMonkey
communication as it passes through various computer subsystems. The
format of the track can have a significant impact on the issue; when
playing mp3 tracks the lag is about 1 to 3 seconds however when playing
lossless tracks such as FLAC the lag can be from 4 seconds to 10 seconds
in extreme cases.

What can be done? Good question. I'm sorry to say at this stage I do
not have the skills to do the advanced programming that would be
required :( and hence why I'm writing this post. I have a couple of
ideas but they may not be achievable or totally off track but I'll
table them anyway.

1. If MonkeySqueeze could monitor the track countdown time on a
squeezebox device then it could delay the next track from playing until
the time falls to 0.00 seconds. A delay between tracks will possibly
still occur but it is better than a track abruptly stopping

2. Introduce a synchronise function similar to the one in Squeezebox
Server

If anyone has better ideas or wishes to contribute to the discussion
please take the time to reply."

You can safely delete any lines beginning with a "#". These are

SBS uses #EXTURL to be smarter, but it will regenerate it when it feels
