My recent Samsung Smart TV doesn't output external source analogue
sound

But surely you're not putting in analogue sound? Most TVs will output
PCM on the S/PDIF after decoding the HDMI input from cable tv/games
console etc.

It actually says this in the manual? Or you can't get this to work? As

Regardless, HDMI input into a sound bar is rather pointless and why most
such devices don't bother offering it.

I've a panasonic and it is the same - audio from analog TV signals
(which are rare) are not output on the digital audio but are ouput on
the analog audio out.
Only sources with digital audio are output on TV digital audio out (i.e
TV will not do analogue to digirtal audio conversion for output).

 How?
My recent Samsung Smart TV doesn't output external source analogue sound
 through its optical out.

Both of my Panasonic TVs send whatever is on screen to the optical
output, regardless of the source - very convenient for using my hifi
speakers to improve the TV sound. For HDMI inputs and the built-in
digital tuner I assume it is a digital passthrough (I've never checked),
but it even provides optical out for the built-in analogue tuner, so
I've always assumed it must have an ADC. Come to think of it though, I
guess even the analogue tuner is implemented digitally, so the audio is
probably digital from the moment it's received.

Also with my Panasonic, if say a dvd with 5.1 audio is playingf
connected to TV by HDMI - as TV only has 2.0 audio will negotiate over
HDMI to get 2.0 from DVD player and only 2.0 audio will be output on
digital audio out. So a sound in this case will only play 2.0 audio
unless directly connected to DVD player.

Yes, both are common limitations of TV audio outs, neither would be
corrected if using HDMI out. ;)

Few would have analog audio input into a TV if they are expecting
digital/5.1 output. The more common setup is digital to AVR for
surround and simultaneous analog to TV for non-surround use (like
watching news, etc...).

2.0 digital output is really meant for input into an AVR which will
matrix 2.0 to 5.1 (or more) via a DSP like Dolby ProLogicII.

Common TV audio outs these days are:
- 5.1 digital out if using the TV's own tuners (OTA, cable, QAM)
- 2.0 digital out if using external digital input source (DVD,
sat/cable box, BD)
- no digital output if using external analog input source

Trouble with multiroom systems is, you buy into an entire ecosystem. So
if you spend money and want to expand your collection of devices you
need to trust that the system will be around in the future.

Of all the companies selling (moreless affordable) systems Sonos is the
one I would trust to still be around in the future. They have been
around for long and are really very visible on the market.

A friend has Raumfeld and I am not that impressed by it. Plus, who knows
if they will be around in the future.

When I bought a system I decided against Sonos (also because of the
pricetag) and for SB. But that is not really around anymore.

As for developer apps, the only one I use is Triode's Spotify - which is
superior to the Sonos support.

The thing that sells me most on the Sonos is that you just click on a
title and boom - there it is coming out of your speakers. The SB could
run well, but it could also have a migrane and drive me nuts.

Still have some time to make up my mind, but it is looking like Sonos at
the moment...

I agree no technical reason but the use of HDMI on a sound bar could
simplify thing for the end user - just one type of cable. No toslink,
coax, minijack or RCA phono. However at the moment with the need to
connect to legacy and ordinary audio equipment digital out makes sense
for Sonos.

Well, since you are obviously having issues with OrangeSqueeze, too (as
I read from the post you made in the OrangeSqueeze thread at the same
time), I would guess it's something with your setup.

What you describe sounds to me like you have lost the connection to the
server or the server is down. SqueezeCommander caches albums and artists
so you can still browse them when the server stops responding, but when
you want to open an album, it needs to retrieve the tracks and that
fails.

Me thinks the problem is actually the same one you are seeing with
OrangeSqueeze just with different symptoms, you write that OrangeSqueeze
complains about a loss of connection (or that it can't connect), which
fits.

Please check whether your server is reachable and running fine. Have a
look at Settings-Information in the web interface, maybe it's stuck
scanning.

Not really a known issue, but that doesn't make it valid. I use it on a
N7 all the time. What LMS server version?

I'd love to see logs generated when these connection hiccups happen.
With a N7 you can use a trick to send a developer report by holding down
vol up/vol down/power simultaneously. Android 4.1 made it much harder to
get reliable log files from non-rooted devices. You can also use the
menu item in preferences to submit logs, but often by the time you
navigate there the relevant data is gone.

Also, you might try the preview builds if you haven't already. There are
quite a few connectivity-related changes (but nothing specific I can
point to to solve your problem) in the 1.4-preview series.

Squeezebox had been around for a long time until Logitech decided to
stop selling them but the advantage with Sonos is that it's their only
business so it's probably unlikely that they will stop selling their
devices, at least as long as they don't get acquired by a bigger company
that changes their strategy...

You will always have this issue when the software and hardware comes
from the same company, the only real way to get around that issue is to
have a documented protocol and allow third party hardware and software
vendors to integrate with it, that way you aren't dependent on a single
company. At the moment the only such solution available to the public
which I'm aware of is UPnP but parts of the UPnP standard is really not
optimized for usage with music. Future will tell if somebody comes up
with a multi vendor solution which is more optimized for usage with
music.

Am I missing something? Isn't SlimProto documented and publicly
available? Even if it isn't documented, LMS is open-source so SlimProto
can be discovered.

While I agree that Sonos is the proprietory system most likely to
survive, it strikes me that systems built around LMS and open-source
players such as Squeezelite can be kept alive for as long as the
enthusiast wishes, and are therefore the most future-proof of the lot.

There are a lot of UPnP servers that works pretty good, the issue is the
other components in the UPnP setup, especially if you pick components
from different manufacturers as it often tend to result in all sorts of

This server software works flawlessly, and since it is based on the
OHMedia open source software it supports Linns extensions to UPNP, that
support gapless playback and using their shoutcast fully synchronising
multiple players.

It also supports a very clever tag structure that allows browsing by all
tag types in anti order you choose. For example you can browse by
composer and then composition and then orchestra.

It is written in Java, and there are build that run on virtually all
platforms, both arm and intel based NAS devices and the usual Windows,
Mac OSX and Linux variants.

Not bad for free and by one guy.

The BBCiPlayer LMS plugin will work with all players. You can also
install a BBCiPlayer App for Touch Radio which does the same but
without need for a local LMS.

The Extra plugin was not intended to replace the iPLayer plugin just add
additional choice such as the top 10 categories. However after user
requests it can aso provide a fallback when BBCiPlayer XML feed is not
working. The Extra awkward menu is determined the alternative source
of prog info.

Since Extra works but BBCiPlayer own menu is empty then check that
BBCiPlayer plugin is up to date (what version have you installed ) ?
Another possibility is some problem getting XML so I suggest clearing
LMS cache and also check date/time on LMS host.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Playback comes to iPeng

Pippin,

Just want to say thank you for the good work. I was using ipeng when it
was just an plugin for the squeezebox server and when your ipod app
first came out, I bought that since the first version. When you first
added the playback function, I didn't think that was very useful as I
was mainly using the ipod for controlling all my other squeezebox
devices. Recently, I found out that Logitech had discontinued the
squeezebox line and I can no longer get any squeezebox in my local area
or anywhere in the world for a reasonable price. After days of
search, I realised that ipeng may be able to turn an ipod into a
squeezebox receiver. I then pulled out my old 1st generation ipod and
enabled the ipeng playback option. When I connected it through a
charging line out cable to my Audiolab amp, the quality is surprisingly
good! Sound quality of Flac playback is as good as a mid-level CD
player. Better yet, on the server, it appeared as just another
squeezebox player that I could control remotely.

Now, I no longer need to worry about not able to get another squeezebox
hardware. When I need a new player, just get an ipod and pick a nice
dock or connection to fit the need. Much more freedom for hardware
combination. To me, Logitech had just handed over one of their great
product to Apple.

Re: [slim] Puzzled about iPlayer problem

2013-02-15 Thread bpa

First check the BBCiPlayer plugin version. What version is installed
?

Cache location depends on the OS. With Windows there is a conrol
application which can clear the cache.
The WebUI Setting/Info tab gives the cache location at the end of the
page but depending your installation and plugins etc. you may not want
to clear all caches/

Re: [slim] Puzzled about iPlayer problem

2013-02-15 Thread steve4586

The time settings are ok as I sync via ntp.

The LMS is installed on a sheevaplug, and is debian, the cache is
located in the default /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache

I am getting program listings for most stations, but Radio 4, 4 LW and 6
Music only show empty when trying to browse programs. Listen live
works ok for all station. And the stations I listen to mostly? Yep
Radio 4 and 6 music, so this is slightly annoying.

Is there a command to clear the cache or is this via rm (I'll try not to
rm * -f at root :-))

Thank you

[slim] Yet another what amp for my SB question

2013-02-15 Thread GRC

Well despite the general doom and gloom about the demise of SB devices
(nothwithstanding the community-funded thread) I'm still enjoying my
little Squeezeboxen and waiting for used prices to settle down a bit so
I can get some more. In the mean time, I recently bagged a brace of JBL
Control One speakers in almost-new condition at a great price and I want
to stick 'em on the end of a spare Squeezy. I'd forgotten how much I
like these JBL beauties, but they do need a bit of welly to sing. I
connected my little Topping TP-20 MKII but it runs out of steam just as
the Control Ones start to boogie. The Topping TP-60 looks interesting
but is much more expensive.

So - any suggestions for a small straight-forward minimalistic
line-level amp offering - say - upwards of 30W RMS per channel into 8
ohms (and not at 10% THD!)? Happy to buy used gear. Budget - how about
£150 sterling / €175 euros / $230 US dollars? There's plenty above
that budget (e.g used Cyrus Straight Line, Nu-Force) but I figure it's a
decent break point for used gear at least. I know I can get some old
Rotel / Denon / Sansui / Teac / whatever stuff below that price but I'd
like something physically small and all I want is an on-off switch and a
volume control.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?

2013-02-15 Thread Triode

A small step in the direction of a community player - I've just declared
release 1.0 of squeezelite, the headless player application we hope to
use as part of this project. If you have not been tracking this before,
but are interested in testing a small linux/windows/osx squeezebox
emulator, please download the player from:
http://code.google.com/p/squeezelite/downloads/list

Please and provide feedback on squeezelite to the thread on the linux
forum:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?97046-Announce-Squeezelite-a-small-headless-squeezeplay-emulator-for-linux-(alsa-only)
[it is no longer linux and alsa only] rather than here to avoid poluting
this thread too much.

The aim of this application is to provide a squeezebox emulation
capbable of supporting many of the core audio playback features of
recent hardware players for playback of local files and radio streams
via LMS. [Note MySB.com and streaming services requiring it are not
supported.]

The player requires separate installation of codecs files and if
installed will play wav/aiff, flac, mp3, ogg and aac streams.

Hey, don't tell Apple ;) You know that SqueezeCast was once called
SqueezePod and had to change the name upon request from Apple? Pod
is forbidden in any names as of Apple, not only on the App Store...

No commands just rm -rf in most cases one can delete the whole thing and
restart LMS it will then rescan files and build a new dB.
One of the cases when you may want to be more selective is when using
some of Erlands plugins like trackstat and don't want to restore stats
from backup files .

The Font Replacer applet is what you need. See

 Mini Audio Amplifier Muse M50 TPA3123 T-Amp 50W RMS

Probably a great value for that little money but the TPA3123 chip is
rated 2*25w at 4 ohm max 20w at 10% thd .
16w at 1% thd 4 ohm and 8 w at 1% thd 8ohm measured in the proper
operating range at thd+N 0,08% it gives 5w at 8 ohm or 10w if you use
one chip per ch and bridge them ( if the chip allows that ).

If you read further at the amazon spec page muse spec it as high
performance guarantee 5W RMS 8 ohm so for OP perspective he should
consider it a 5w power amp .

These class T and D amps suffer from a bit of creative specs so dividing
the sales blurb power by a factor 4 - 10 is more like it .
another hint can be the rating of the power supply ,some of the cheaper
amps does not utilise these chips fully due to under dimensioned wall
wart .
To get the higher powers it should be feed 24 volts but muse includes a
14V 4Apower supply ?

But for the price you can't beat these things :) and a boxfull of them
is probably a good option in large house in need of more zones
