Re: [slim] Squeezebox 2015 - Is the Squeezebox Universe Expanding of Shrinking?
How much longer does the group think Mysqueezebox.com last? I've had my SB3 since just after they were introduced.I don't run the Media Server all the time, and I frequently connect directly to the internet via Mysqueezebox.com.I've looked at what's on the market right now (for replacement players) and they don't seem as elegant and versatile as SB3. Not only that, but eventually with some new iteration of Windows, the Media Server software won't be compatible with future operating systems. As others have said, Squeezebox threw in the towel too soon. It would be a great market for Squeezebox now, I think. [slim] Looking for improved wireless network range - WAP recommendations?
For 5 1/2 years, I've been using a Linksys BEFW11S4 802.11B router for my home network, and nearly 4 years now it's been feeding my SB3. 3 months ago I moved - and my home theater room is further from my office (where the Linksys WAP is installed) than it was before. My new home has a metal roof which hurts the range. The range has been ok - 65 - 70% but a couple weeks ago I insulated the attic in the house over the 1 story section where my office is - the signal has to push upwards to the 2nd story section at the front of the house where the HT room is (on the second floor). Now I'm finding my signal strength is ranging from 45 to 55% - when it's below 50% I experience drop outs and buffering issues, and streaming radio stations cutting out. So I'm in the market for a router that will have much better range/signal strength than the 'vintage' Linksys I'm currently using. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. 1 -- Cleve Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68348 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Annoying Firmware/Software updates
Well, the SB3 was up to it's old firmware update nonsense again. I had been logged, for several days, onto Squeezenetwork. Last evening, I logged back onto Slimserver. Even though I turned off automatic updates in Slimserver 6.5.1, I was prompted (again) for the dreaded software update. This turned into a firmware update which (again!!!) necessitated me manually entering my entire 26 character WEP key in order to get network connectivity. Following some of the previous suggestions, I *tried* to exit out of the network setup routine. I could do so - but the unit wouldn't connect to my wireless network. Again, I have auto updates turned OFF in Slimserver. What the hell is going on with this nonsense? BTW - when I signed back onto Squeezenetwork, the damn thing prompted me for ANOTHER software update. Luckily, this time it saved my WEP key and automatically reconnected to my wireless network. This is getting old REAL fast. [slim] Wish List for Slimserver - editing and adding of 'Favorites'
My one wish for future versions of the Slimserver GUI is the ability to add and edit favorites directly from the software. Why? In my situation, the SB3 is located in a different room of the house from the computer which runs Slimserver. So if I use direct internet radio tune in via Slimserver, I have to go to the SB3 itself, and access the add favorites function to save the radio station. Then, some stations are saved as IP addresses, rather than their station name. It would be nice also to be able to EDIT the station names directly from the Slimserver interface. I found a 'work around' for this - but it would be better to use the Slimserver software, instead of tinkering with the favorites directory itself. Other than this minor quibble - Slimserver works quite painlessly here. I recently upgraded computers from my trusty old Gateway Athlon 650 to a new Gateway Athlon 3500 with 1 Gb of RAM. [slim] Web radio stuttering, the White Noise of Death and THIS station
Dean, et al; I've realized that everytime I have a problem with web-radio stutter, or I experience the White Noise of Death I have been listening to THIS radio station - OEM Radio... http://205.188.215.231:8000/listen.pls I love the music, and I frequently listen to this station. But inevitably, after a few hours, the music will start to stutter - ie, cut in and out every 2 or 3 seconds. The interval is too short to possibly be a buffer issue. And also, it's while listening to this station that I've experienced the White Noise of Death. 4 or 5 times so far, I believe. FYI, I listen to web-radio probably 10-12 hours a day, seven days a week(even when I'm out, I tend to leave the stereo on). And I listen to a lot of other web radio stations - not just OEM Radio, the one in question. I don't know if it's a solution - but if you gents could determine why these issues occur on this particular radio-feed, you'd probably be heading in the right direction to solve a couple of those mysterious user-issues like White Noise of Death. -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21956 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: White noise of death
Sounds like you indeed experienced the White Noise of Death. However, this is a new wrinkle on the problem - the noise evidently spontaneously erupted with the player powered down (the amp was obviously left on) The two times my player has experienced this problem - I was listening to streaming music. I know that Sean theorized the problem has something to do with the sampling rate of the music being played. However, it's clear that the best theory is seriously flawed, since in this case NOTHING was playing, and the reason for the problem remains a mystery. Even if one was disciplined enough NEVER to leave the house with Squeezebox playing, there is still a danger of severe speaker damage even with SB3 off Many amps, like my McIntosh 7100, have no on/off switch, so wiring the analog outs from SB3 to the 7100's inputs (or similar amp that stays powered on) would be very risky. Since the 2nd occurence (for me) of this problem, I have completely disconnected the analog outputs on the Squeezebox. I *think* that McIntosh's Power Guard system would protect my speakers (it did the first time it happened!) - but I'm not willing to risk it again. I've been reading audio forums for over two years now, and I've NEVER heard of a piece of source equipment spontaneously 'powering on' and issuing forth potentially speaker-destroying distortion. This is a serious problem, and it's clear it's not an isolated incident involving one or two players. -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20248 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] The White Noise of Death struck again yesterday
I was listening to the streaming station Dub Beautiful on Squeezenetwork yesterday via the digital outs and surround processor. Suddenly, the music cut out. The VU meters on the Squeezebox were still registering music, but there was no audio output. Increasing the volume on the Squeezebox made no difference. Suspecting that I was experiencing the White Noise of Death again - I lowered the volume on my pre-amp substantially and switched to analog - yep, there it was - White Noise of Death. I tried looking at the station info because the last time it happened Sean was curious as to the sampling rate. Unfortunately, the info didn't list bit rate or sampling rate. However, I did pull up the radio station on my computer via WinAmp - Winamp reports a conventional 128 Kbps/ 44khz stream. Both times this problem has occured - I have been connected to Squeezenetwork and streaming a webradio station. Turning the Squeezebox on and off made no difference as to the white noise sound - it continued to play. Raising and lowering the volume, also, made no difference, until Mute was reached. At that point -the white noise/pink noise ceased in the right channel. However, the loud static buzzing continued in the left channel unabated. I had to hold down the power button until the SB3 went through a full reboot to make the noise disappear. Since I reset the Xilinx (spelling?) processor the last time this happened about a month ago - I had hoped the problem had disappeared. Obviously, it did not. I guess the good news is - as long as I use only the digital Coax or Optical out on the Squeezebox 3 - there's evidently no danger of frying expensive audio gear - the digital output apparently just goes dead when this situation occurs. I'd return the unit for exchange - but I'm not sure this issue is 'resolved' and there's a very good chance I'd experience the same problem with a replacement SB3. -- Cleve Two-channel system; McIntosh MC2205 amplifier McIntosh MAC4100 receiver Klipsch CF-4 speakers Denon DR-M3 Cassette Deck Cleve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2048 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20154 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Extremely loud white noise from Squeezebox?!
Unfortunately, with my older vintage gear, I had really enjoyed the convenience of the remote control volume control. To use this, I had turned the gain up on my preamp so that if the volume on the Squeezebox was maxed, I'd be using nearly all the 200 watt per channel output of my McIntosh 2205 power amp. Therefore, if the Squeezebox has this electronic brain fart, the potential for equipment damage still exists. The only work-around - defeat the SB3 volume control and go back to the old fashioned way of getting up, walking over, and turning up/down the volume. max.spicer Wrote: Thank you. Having listened to and used a Squeezebox 1 for several weeks before exchanging for my current Squeezebox 3, I wholeheartedly urge you, if finances permit, to get a Squeezebox 3. [slim] Thumbs up for Squeezebox 3!
I finally was able to exchange/upgrade my Squeezebox 1 for a Squeezebox 3 last Friday. After 3 days of evaluation, I can't say enough good things about it. I had a few issues with the first Squeezebox 1 I owned, but they seem to have disappeared with 3. Here's the pluses I've experienced so far... Menu speed seems improved. Display is MUCH easier to read. The larger display allows a lot more information to be displayed in a font that can be read across the room than Squeezebox 1. Squeezenetwork - it's SO good to be able to use Squeezebox without booting up my desktop computer. I bought Squeezebox primarily for internet radio. Appearance - the styling meshes far better with my glass-faced McIntosh equipment than the old Squeezebox design. And while there's no ungainly external antenna, signal strength is as strong, if not stronger, with SB3 than SB1 Sound Quality - I'm surprised at how much better it sounds to my uneducated ears than Squeezebox 1 when in two-channel analog mode. MP3 radio seems to sound richer, with better high frequency content. Buffer - wow, no annoying dropouts, particularly when my old 650 Athlon is chugging on some particularly CPU intensive task. And those are just some of the advantages. The only DIS-advantage is that bass and treble controls have disappeared. I liked this feature only because I use vintage equipment sans remote controls, and it was nice to be able to adjust tone remotely. The sound quality for webradio is so vastly superior to either jacking my wireless laptop into my system, or broadcasting an FM signal from my computer via a Soundfeeder. However, after accessing Slim's website, I now realize that it's the original Version 1. Should I return the unit and request Squeezbox 2 or 3? I've got a decent 2-channel audio setup, with McIntosh preamp/amplification and big Klipsch Epic CF-4 loudspeakers - so the best possible sound quality is important to me. I paid $250 + tax. I don't think they were intentionally trying to put one over on me - They're a local audio/video retailer of good repute. They didn't even have a functional Squeezbox on display, and didn't know much about the units. Perhaps they don't know that newer versions are available? -- Cleve ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for all the kind advice. I sent an e-mail off to the Stereo Shop asking about upgrading to Squeezbox 2 or 3. And yes, it IS version 1. When I try to access some of the screensavers, the screen displays Must have Squeezbosx 2 to use or something to that effect. -- Cleve ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
