Maybe someone can confirm here in this thread...

Hi there

Unfortunately microsoft offers no c++ programming interface for mobile
7 phones. I would have to port everything to managed C# or Silverlight.

I'll be exploring those options a little more and let you know if there
are any news.

BTW - there is a new release on my homepage inluding
- support for spotify artwork (thanks a lot to Stoker!)
- improved cover download from Amazon.

Good night

Thanks for the praise :-)

To be honest - I don't know yet.
Porting SlimCtrl to win phone 7 requires a considerable investment.
(new programming environment and time)
And the download rate does not quite motivate this step.

On the other hand I love the feedback from - and the dialogue with you
guys.
I will check out what it takes to port to win phone 7 and make a
decision towards the end of the year.

*post encouragements here*

The pixelized, maybe distorted SlimCtrl logo indicates that SC was
unable to download the actual image.

I am based in germany and can not join spotify.
I would like to debug this issue though.

The only way I can think of is to connect to your SB server via
internet.
That involves opening ports 9000 and 9001 on your router and sending me
you current IP-adress.

Re: [slim] SlimCtrl 1.3 out now

2010-10-03 Thread Locuth

Hi there.

That 'download from amazon' feature checks amazon for covers of the
selected album.
The user-interface for that feature isn't very sophisticated.
When you tap the 'amazon' icon - watch the status bar (at the top)
closely.
It will say 'no covers found' or 'xxx covers found'.

If no covers were found the icon simply disappears.
If more than one cover was found the 1st cover will be displayed.
The icon will stay visible and you can press it again for the next
cover.

It all depends on the quality of your mp3-tags.
If they are proper there's a good chance to find a matching cover.

Make sure album artist and album name are properly tagged.
And try a common album first.

Did this only happen whe you ran SC 1.44/45 for the first time?
Or is this occurring regularly?
It might have to to with old registry entries from previous versions.

'Swipe-right' is your friend:

Try swipe-left/righ also in the 'current playlist' in the main player

You might also like:

Uff - home again. Have been on vacation for two days.

Ok, log file...

Open the settings and at the bottom right:
Increase the log level to 2.
Run SC as you normally would.
Provoke the timeout error, maybe twice so I have *more* information.
Terminate slimcontrol as you normally would. (Don't kill it)

The logfile is located in the SC application folder, e.g.
/programs/SlimCtrl 1.3/SClog.txt

-> sb _at_ sciatec_de
Thanks a bunch

But most people will prbly add an album or something.

>

Well, I think that depends on the 'distribution'.
It could be anything like e.g.:

95% users with reasonably speedy servers (like my 1.5Ghz 7 year old
Athlon) would have 0.5% timeouts
And 5% users would have 90% timeouts.

>
> Plus you will see those clustered around:
> - people browsing by Genre since this query is incredibly slow... wait:
> do you support Genres at all, can't remember right now.
>
Yes, but the thing is, when you browse via genre->artist->album, the
queries become much faster, because they return only few items.

Now that I think about it:
It's actually impossible to give a fail rate. So my 5% ballpark was
pretty ignorant.

My approach was the following:
Every query is divided in chunks of n elements.
And I chose n so that (in my environment) each chunk response returns
with 1-2 seconds.
And the timeout is 10 sec.

Maybe it's better to interpret the 5% like so:
In 5% of all thinkable use-cases will a query fail.
in 95% it will not fail.

so it will never fail for the average user
(never := < 0.0001 % e.g.)

Maybe we should talk about this on the phone.
It seems to be on your mind too :-)

Remember the 80/20 rule?
I am poing by the 95/5 rule with a 10sec timeout
You are taking the 98/2 route with a 30sec timeout;-)

Oh and as to ruining some people's program experience.
What's there to ruin if it takes > 10 seconds to query a couple of
albums, or a single image.
These people are having no fun anyways.

Well it's a little more work than I thought.
So it'll be tomorrow before I can post an update.

But it's working fine. The complete albums list will be loaded much
much faster.
And the "album-artist" information will be added as you browse
individual albums.

For instance (on my PC) after browsing GENRE 'alternative' -> 'all
albums'
22 albums are getting the additional 'album-artist information.

- am I still making sense - ?

Yes - I'm getting to bed too late again.
But I just want to have you satisfied.^^

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-03-03 Thread Locuth

SlimControl is trying to talk "CLI" to your SqueezeCenter on port 9000.
But SqueezeCenter's CLI port is probably 9090.

You usually do not need to change the CLI-port setting in the
"settings".

What you are seeing in the error log is the HTTP-Server repsonse.
It says something like "what the hell are you talking about?"
Or in other words "This command is not allowed: goodby!"

If run SqCntr on a PC its most definitly port 9090 for CLI.
Else check in server settings -> information

Does that help?

Re: [slim] iPeng vs. Android apps...?

2010-03-02 Thread Locuth

As several authorities have already said - you cannot compare the speed
of the web-interface of SqueezeCenter to a native application like
iPeng, SqueezeCommander or SlimControl.
The apps are much faster and more intuitive than the browser
interface.

Given that these apps cost a fraction of the hardware it all depends on
what you are willing to spend on the hardware. And what you'll be doing
with it besides controlling your SqueezeBox.

If you fancy an iPhone - go get it and iPeng comes for like 2% extra
money.
Same for an Android phone & SqueezeCommander.

If you merely want to control your SqueezeBox get a PDA for 30 bucks
and SlimControl for another 15. If you want to be able to make phone
calls with your 'controller' get a reasonably priced smartphone like a
HTC + SlimControl.

Just my 2c.

Re: [slim] SlimCtrl 1.3 out now

2010-03-02 Thread Locuth

I'll check the "all tracks" query for performance too.

Maybe I can collect the "album artist" information incrementally.

Like so:
When the complete album list is loaded (initially) I'll skip the
artist information.
And when individual albums or groups of albums (artist-query) are
loaded at a later time,
I query the artist information along and add it to the complete album
list.

As it is now, your NAS cannot deliver 20 albums in 10 seconds
(timeout).

Thats unacceptable for a complete list of e.g. 500 albums (=4 minutes)
But it might be permissable for 10 albums of a single artist.

Muele - I'll upload an update for SC tomorrow.

The thing is, arztde had me convinced to display additional album
information (artist and year)
However querying this additional information takes rather long.
I suppose this causes SC to timeout (particularly on a NAS)

If no one opposes, I'll take out this extra query.

[slim] SlimCtrl 1.3 out now

2010-02-19 Thread Locuth

Hello Everybody

SlimCtrl 1.3 is out and available for download on my web site.
To those of you who are familiar with SlimCtrl the most prominent new
features are:

- Wake-On-Lan(*)
- Auto Server discover (unless a server is already configured)
- Lyrics and snchronized Lyrics ( Karaoke - if you will)
- Players on SN are listed in the player list and may be
- More icons in the browser; radio stations, flickr, facebook
- IR-Blaster compatible volume control

- A couple of bugs and many minor grahics issues fixed
- Improved power managment and faster wakeup from standby.

To those of new to SlimCtrl:
It's is a windows mobile based remote control for Squeezebox Server.
Proven to work with PDA's and smartphones running WM 2003 ... WM 6.5.

There is a manual available for download on the download page.
It's not up to date but I'll give you the idea.

Or you just give it a try - it's pretty inuitive.

--
*) To activate WOL for already configured server:
Hit the "test" button in the settings once. If the server is behind a
router you'll probably get a notice that WOL will not work.

Oh, you mean a "cache everything now" sort of thing.
That would of course be an option. I'll think about that.

On the other hand, there's four lists that are beeing cached:
albums, genres, artists, musicfolder (root directory)
Once they have been loaded for the first time, the cache is built.
So it's four times waiting.
Besides tha album covers, i.e.

Arztde's post might have been in the german forum.
Anyway it's good to have somebody confirm a bug or inconveniene.

I can't tell - never had a chance to try it via UMTS.
But as long as it is TCP/IP it should work all right.

Just some basics:
Can you connect to the browser interface of the server ?
Can you connect to the CLI-port (9090) (vie telnet for example)
These would be the minimal requirements.

Than, when you hit "Test" in the the settings, what does the error log
say?
BTW you are using an IP-address or a DNS name?

Talk to you later

Of course I will also look into the shut-off problem.
It would help a great deal if you could figure out which settings

Does that problem occur when you start and end SlimCtrl right away?
Without browsing or anything.

I assume you have actually shut down SC, not just put it in the

Because there's an option to prevent the device from going into
standby.

Have you Activated the auto Wifi power-up?

Could you tell me exactly which transitions are slow.
For instance, the slide-in/out transations in the browser ?
Or the cover-flipping in the main screen?
How long does the slide-in transation take - approximately. 1/2 second,
2 seconds?

The thing is, these animations are all on the software-level.
So they are slower than native animations (like e.g. on iPhone)

To wipe the cache:
-> Settings -> 'cache' button -> Delete a particular cache

Besides that, SC fills the cache as needed.
So whenever it encounters a yet uncached image/album-list/etc it will
load and store it.
That is opposed to filling the cache all at once which would take
rather long.
The cache-on-demand is causing some sluggishness when an image is
loaded the first time.

Do mean the browser button at the bottom,

It is possible in general - but quite some work.
I'll conisder it some time from now.

Thanks for the great feedback.
Do get back to me. Particularly on the animation/transition issue.
I'd love to improve it for those large screens.
Thing is - its quite smooth in my 240x320 screen.

Now that's about as much as I am allowing.
For fast queries (albums, artists, ...):

10 seconds @ 50 items == 30 seconds @ 150 items.

Folder queries get some extra for the server appearently needs to scan
the folder structure first.

Actually it's even less.
As you said: Leaner protocol. Plus I never query all tagged parameter.
But of course, if more than two people complained about timeouts I
would change it.
So far only few have.

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2010-02-13 Thread Locuth

The playlist arrows are gone.
Use left-swipe and right-swipe to navigate.

the timeout value is now fixed.
If SlimCtrl queries take longer than that, your server is too slow.
It would no fun if things were taking that long.

Note:
Long queries are 'split' by SlimCtrl.
For example, 50 albums at a time, 10 folders at a time.

If 50 albums take > 10 seconds than 500 albums will take > 100
seconds.
Or 200 Folders > 3 minutes.

I've had that scrollbar issue before.

Does that error occur when you launch SlimCtrl in landscape mode?
If you could make a screenshot - it might help fixing the bug.

I've already spent numerous hours on the portrait/landscape switch :-(

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2010-02-04 Thread Locuth

I had a lengthy conversation in the german forum.
And my understanding now is that IRBlaster requires volume commands
like
"volume +5" rather than "volume = 45"

So if activated, SlimCtrl sends +/- volume commands.
The volume slider is then replaced by volume up/down buttons.

Most people set the SqueezeCener volume to 100%.
This setting is (AFAIK) left as-is by the IRBlaster plugin.

Does that make sense?

Hello guys

I have targetted all the issues you have brought up or complained about
;-).

Besides I added an IRBlaster mode (activated in the 'settings')
The latter is yet untested as I have no SB 2/3 -- only a Duet.

I would love feedback - particularly for IRBlaster.

Muele, Spumanti - I uploaded an update of SlimCtrl, with the following
errors fixed:

1. Cover flipside, Album-Tracks:
Cut-off popup window when tapping the two bottom tracks - fixed
Tracklist will reload much faster when swiping-back from the lyrics.

2. keyboard in browser:
Cut-off keyboard

3. Browser tracks:
removed the question marks ("?? - song title")

4. Status bar (top of the screen)
Fixed the pixel-blur (I hope ^^)

It would be great if you could verify those fixes on your devices.

The browser has 5 categories now:
'my Music'
'Radio'
'Services' - like Deezer, LastFM,...
'Favorites'
'Track Search'

Within each category, backswipe will take you back in the hierarchy.
To get out of the browser, you tap the exit-arrow.
I though that was the most obvious way.

You are right, several steps in the browser hierarchy would not need 2
clicks.
However, it's simply much easier (programatically) to stick to certain
scheme. And the scheme in SCtrl is:
1st click - select item (and potentially add to playlist, or display
tooltip)
2nd click - open item.

The keyboard has two toggle modes: characters and numerical/special
characters. The toggle-button is the bottom-right key.
If it's not working for you, I think you found a bug there. It would be
great if you could take a snapshot or a photograph.

Good one, thanks.

I'll have to move it up I guess.

SlimCtrl prepends the track name with the track (album-) index.
If the track index is unknown (check your id3 tag) SCtrl shows "??".
Just to have a consistent display format.

In brief:
1. Select (highlight) the master player
2. Tap the sync-icon on any other (non-highlit player)

There's a sync (double-arrow) and a

I am suporting 6 different screen-resolutions with different layouts.
With the left-hand-skin that makes 12 tests on every new design

Plus I had sporadic graphic errors in the left-hand-skin.

Dear ClimCtrl Users

Please excuse my recent abscence from the forum.

I have spent most of the time fixing and improving usability issues
together with a very thorough and patient beta tester (Thanks Leif).
We improved many details, Leif was a neverending fountain of
bug-reports.

The most notable new features are
- lyrics from lyrdb.com
- better coverart and image integration (facebook, flickr, remote
radio)
- hardened network engine
- WOL (currently beeing tested)
- slightly different browser-structure

I hope to be getting feedback on the WOL sometime this afternoon.
I will then upload a beta version of SCtrl 1.3

Hi again

I have an idea...

Please send me the original wma-file.
Plus, I'd like to have the full path to that track (on your server)
That is - from the server's point of view.

For example: if the track is
C:/Stuff/MyMusic/AlbumA/Track.wma

And you have set the SQCenter music directory to
C:/Stuff/MyMusic

The full path from the server's point of view would be:
/AlbumA/Track.wma

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-01-18 Thread Locuth

Hi there

There is no upper limit on the number of folders/tracks.
Deleting the cache would have been my first guess too.

If the folder list is (reproduciably) truncated at the same folder or
track I'd say it's caused by some error at that track/folder.

How large is the truncated folder actually?
Is the root directory truncated or some sub directory?
If it's the root, you could send me your cache-file (or inspect it
yourself)
It's in the cache directory /SlimCtrl//SC_fld#.dat.

Alternatively I could check what's going on by connecting to your
server from my place.
That's the fastest way to find and debug the error.

Cheers
Sebastian

The variety of OS' and hardware platforms makes it virtually impossible

Hey Adam - I hope the move went well.
It's good you're bringing this up again.

Try this in SCtrl:
Settings->Cache->Delete All (or select your server -> Delete)
Leave the settings and restart SCtrl.

Now, open any of artists/albums/folders/genres in the browser.
You can observe SCtrl downloading from SQcenter (watch the list
header)

If however these lists are loaded instantly - then,
"Housten, we have a problem"

Oh - that was a misunderstanding.
The behaviour you've described is by design.
I figured one would want to have the complete list again when going

If there's an intuitive way to satisfy your needs without confusing the

Currently, SlimControl's scrolling text features allows for text
lengths 3 times the screen with. I'll think about increasing it.

If you go back by 'sweeping-right' it won't be cleared
Hitting the genres/artists/albums button will always show the complete
list with no selection. But I'll consider keeping the most previously
selected genre/artist/album.

Text-scrolling within the playlist (or any of the browser lists) is a
tough one.
I will see what I can do to allow for longer track names in the current
playlist.

I decided to display only the 1st artist in the "now playing screen"
(for performance)
When you "tap&hold" on the current artwork you'll get the track
information including all artists.

It's probably the Qualcomm MSM7225 processor...
SControl is built for ARM and I don't know much about hardware
compatibilites...
I am sorry.

A 'cooked' ROM is a ROM update for (older) mobile devices
(and usually not officially supported - AFAIK)

But I'm no expert at that. All I know is that they cause troubles.

How about the CAB-file is corrupt ?
I had that once or twice. If you'd download it again maybe...
Or your hardware platform really does not accept SC.
(First time I heard that from a WM 6+ user)

I'd like to know what processor your HTC has.

Ok, misunderstanding.
Yes, it's intended for WM 6.1.

Are you running a cooked ROM or anything but the original OS on the
mobile?
Anyway, 2nd solution:

copy the CAB file to your device manually.
You'll find the (PC) installation folder via the same START-menü item

Tha CAB file is intended for installation on the mobile device, not on
the PC.
I figure, the msi-installer has not automatically installed SlimCtrl on
your mobile ?

If not:
On the PC, go to START->programs->SlimControl->1.0->Install 1.0b
[Your device must be connected via the Mobile Device Center.]

Does that do the trick?

Cheers

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-11-24 Thread Locuth

Hey Rob

Yes - I will leave the playlist displayed until you press the popup
menu button again.
(the one in the lower right)

I was planning to add a special item 'all artists' / 'all albums' /
'all tracks'
at the top of the current list. Just like on the Duet controller.
(the Duet has that special button at the bottom of the list - I think)

As to the keyboard characters "[" / "]"
Adding more character to the '0-9' button would make it a bit awkward
to use I think.
I will probably have to extend the keyboard to change to a
numerical/special characters mode with "!§$%&/()[]"

What do you think ?
Sebastian

Thanks for the suggestions.

I will definitely implement 1.
Very likely 3.
And consider something for 2.

Concerning the 4th suggestion.
Do you have to set a special option in Squeezecenter
or simply separate the artists by ';'

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

Hey guys

I have a question and request to all SlimControl users
Where do you have set up the cache directory
1. in
2. on an SD/MMC/... card

If it's option 1:
Can you confirm or disconfirm that the cache folder 'SlimCtrl' resides
in
in your root directory, i.e. '/SlimCtrl'.

Reason I am asking is because I am considering not to query the user to

select a cache location at the initial program start.
The is much faster plus, some people are having a
hard time to make that decision.

Thanks
Sebastian

PS:
To change the cache location
Settings -> Button 'Cache...' -> Button 'Delete All'. Than, restart
SControl

That's so funny - I actually have a track called "find the river".
I just found out by seearching "find the".

Yes, you're right - I have to tell SQCenter to look for the phrase
and it will work in the next release.

Check here for current bugfix status.

Use the on-screen kbd like you would on a phone.
Holding down a key for >= 1 second will produce the decimals and " "
like indicated by the bottom character.

Most definitely
Storage cards are significantly slower then the internal memory.
If you had v.0.98 installed, ysou should wipe the cache.
->Settings->Cache

It does not show any artwork at all ?
Can you send me the logfile, please.

Located in: /SlimCtrl 1.0b/SCLog.txt
That is, after you let SlimControl run for a minute or so.

Thanks,
Sebastian
