Honestly, it was a combination of things... The "perfect storm" of
sorts...

Like @MeSue, my listening habits have changed. I wouldn't say that I
have the same shift as her to podcasts, and other content, but my
overall volume of music listening has dramatically decreased. And when
I do listen to music, I no longer listen to my digital library. Most
(read "almost all") of my music listening is casual listening via my
Google Play Music subscription. Additionally, the locations/situations
where I listen to music have shifted as well. I no longer listen to
music on my traditional audio system. Most of my listening is in my
car, or directly from my computer (with a reasonable set of PC
speakers/sub-woofer attached).

So based on that, I really have not been lured away from my Squeezeboxes
to another network music eco-system. I have been lured away from the
need for a network music eco-system altogether (if that makes sense).

It doesn't help that my SqueezeBox Booms started to experience a number
of different audio, hardware and physical appearance issues. The center
soft-touch paint was starting to get very "tacky" to the touch on all of
my booms. Some were very sticky, and others were starting to get
sticky. This not only made it irritating for day-to-day usage, but also
looked awful. One of the reasons I loved my SqueezeBoxes was that they
looked fantastic. A couple of my boom displays became very dim. Again,
adding to my frustration with day-to-day use, and appearance. And a
couple of my booms had the infamous bass "fart" problem. I know I could
have fixed this problem, but a combination of my changing use case,
along with all the other problems I mentioned made it hard for me to get
motivated to burn calories to fix the problems.

My duet controllers and receivers fared better. There are no speakers,
so "farting" was not a problem. But the controller batteries were
losing capacity, and as I said, my use case did not include listening to
music from my traditional AV rack.

AND...with all of the above...it didn't help that Logitech abandoned the
eco-system. I know that the Squeezebox Network is still being
maintained (and I applaud Logitech for making this investment for the
existing installed base), but the lack of a future for the eco-system
certainly did not help matters.

It really is a shame. I really did (and do) love the Squeezebox
eco-system. It's a sexy and impressive set-up that I used to show off
to all of my houseguests in the prime of my usage. I invested a lot of
money and mental energy on the eco-system (and it did return a lot of
joy).

But with the "perfect storm" that I described, I decided it was time to
do some cost recovery and figure out "what's next".

Does that make sense? Sorry for the long explanation...

[slim] Finally Sold My Treasured Squeezebox Setup :(

2019-07-10 Thread MikeekiM

Well, I have been hanging on for quite a while now... And I had a LOT
invested in the Squeezebox platform...

But sadly, it was time for me to part with my treasured Squeezeboxes...
:( Truth be told, I decommissioned my Squeezebox setup years ago, and
this hardware was just sitting around collecting dust and losing value.

For those of you who are curious on what I was able to get for my
Squeezeboxes in the open market, I will share with you what I was able
to cost recover through eBay.

- Squeezebox Boom #1 - $100.00
- SqueezeBox Boom #2 - $100.00
- SqueezeBox Boom #3 - $85.00
- SqueezeBox Boom #4 - $102.00
- SqueezeBox Boom #5 - $90.00
- Squeezebox Duet (Receiver/Remote Combo) #1 - $160.00
- SqueezeBox Duet (Receiver/Remote Combo) #2 - $160.00
- SqueezeBox Receiver (Extra for Duet Setup) - $70.00
- SqueezeBox Boom Remote (New Spare) - $25.00

All of the above selling prices are "shipped" prices, so they all need
to be reduced to consider eBay Fees (10%), PayPal Fees (2.5%), and
shipping. The duets cost me around $14.00 to ship, and the Booms cost
me around $20.00 to ship.

Good luck to everyone... I enjoyed my Squeezebox set-up, but
unfortunately, it is just time to move on... :(

Rhapsody is not working on my Squeezebox Boom...

It acts as though it's playing from a UI perspective... But no

Pandora, Slacker, my own library...everything else works fine...

Is the root cause SqueezeBox/Logitech, or Rhapsody? And is anyone
working to fix this?

Thanks!

I figured out my issue... But still find it strange... My wifi was
turned off (duh)...

The thing I can't figure out is why one of my devices was still showing
up on the list of devices...even after I uninstalled and reinstalled,
the one device continued to show up... Honestly, if NO DEVICES showed
up, checking my wifi would have been the first thing I did... The fact
that one device showed up really threw me for a loop...

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-05-03 Thread MikeekiM

Not sure if this is a known bug... Last night I was interested in
playing a song that I knew for certain I had in my library...

I went in through My Music > Artists, and found the artist I was
looking for.

The result was a single album, with no option to "All Songs".

For this artist, I only have two songs... One song is not associated
with an album (i.e., album title metatag is blank), and one song is
associated with an album title.

Strange...the "All Songs" option shows for other artists...

Any ideas of what is going on here?

Mine stopped working as well... And as others have reported, I went
into the squeezebox advanced settings and deleted my user and re-added
back and last.fm started to recognize the songs I was trying to

And by trying, I mean that my last.fm page shows the latest song

Yes...very true...and I think you did exactly what I had expected
people to do... vote based on "most often used" controller...

If I allowed multi-vote, then pretty much everyone would vote for
nearly everything (except for options that they don't have...)

I am definitely looking for "preference" (which roughly is equivalent
to "most often used")...

I have four booms and a duet (receiver/controller)...

When I first started using my set up, I controlled my Squeezeboxes with
my SBC... I found navigating through 10s of thousands of tracks using
the IR remote on the boom to be very cumbersome...

But honestly...even the SBC is quite cumbersome with such a large
library...

Now that I have been using my SBs for a while now, I have pretty much
settled into a habit of using the web interface on a PC to control all
of my music on my squeezeboxes...

This is made even simpler and convenient since I got a netbook...

How do you control your music?

Yea... each family member has a last.fm account in my household...
But when they listen to their music on someone elses SB, it screws up
the data... Oh well... It's nearly right anyway!

I really don't want to teach my kids the hassle of going in and

Re: [slim] Scrobbling

2009-12-03 Thread MikeekiM

Thanks for this clarification SnarlyDwarf! I wish last.fm and/or
logitech would make this more clear in their documentation/FAQs...

I think it is clearly more a last.fm issue than it is a logitech
one...but since so many of us are "into" our music, I think logitech
would benefit a lot by putting this information in a scrobbing FAQ
section...

This explains a lot... But it doesn't explain why my broadcast radio
listening through squeezebox is not recognized at all... Not even when
the info is clearly being passed to the squeezebox display, and I have
the option to scrobble radio flipped on... It doesn't even show up
while the song is being played, nevermind logging it into permanent
history...

I have mixed feelings about how last.fm handles scrobbles... On the
one hand, it appears that they are trying to be thoughtful on what
should and shouldn't count... at the same time, what is a scrobble
worth if it disappears... I see the playcount on last.fm as my
listening odometer of sorts... And sometimes you are on roads you
like...and other times you are not on a great road at all...but you are
still accumulating miles...

Not sure how I feel about it all (not that anyone cares how I feel
about it!!!) :)

Re: [slim] Scrobbling

2009-12-03 Thread MikeekiM

I find that all of my MP3/FLAC listening from my library gets scrobbled,
as do tracks from most of the Rhapsody and Pandora tracks...

For some reason, some stuff just doesn't get scrobbled correctly... As
an example, when I listen to Rhapsody channels, the song will show up as
being listened to...but when the song is over, it won't log it in my
permanent history... Other sources do this as well...

And even though I have the option to scrobble online internet radio, I
haven't gotten this to work at all... Even when I see that the song
information is being passed to the display, it still won't even show up
as being listened to...forget about recording it in the history...

I'll need to sort out a list:

1. Sources that scrobble and record into history
2. Sources that last.fm seems to recognize I am listening to realtime,
but no log into history
3. Sources that don't scrobble at all

Bummer... These were good events... I bought 3 of my Booms, and a
Duet at last year's event... And brought a friend with me who bought a
Boom, a Duet and an extra couple of receivers...

(and we filled our selves with a great BBQ dinner to boot!)

The draw was the "free" BBQ...but it turned out to be the most
expensive meal in recent history! :)

[slim] Will There Be a Logitech Open House in MV This Year?

2009-11-24 Thread MikeekiM

***Attention Logitech/SlimDevices Employees "in the know"***

Every year Logitech/SlimDevices holds an open house (and in the last
couple of years, it has been a hosted BBQ in the Mountain View parking
lot in September).

I was told by an employee in September that the open house would be
moved to December 4th... Is this true?

Will there be an open house this year?

Thanks!

I agree with this... I do wish there were a few sounds that just
sounded like your typical alarm clock beeping, ringing and/or buzzing...
I am currently using the local newsradio about 30 minutes before I
really need to be up and about (and the rooster sound about 15 minutes

This gives me 15 minutes to get up with the news...and then Mr. Rooster

Re: [slim] how to best get audio into my kitchen

2009-05-30 Thread MikeekiM

Not surprising, the answer is "it depends"... I am not going to try and
sell you the SqueezeBox... But here is what I would say are some
factors:

Cost - Yes, cost is a factor... And some Sonos advocates will say that
everyone wants a Sonos, but will compromise to the SqueezeBox because
they can't afford a Sonos... I disagree with this... But I also will
concede that price/cost is a factor...

Gadget Guy - Are you a Gagdet person? If you like to tinker, and you
don't mind figuring things out, I actually think the SqueezeBox is the
better solution regardless of cost... The developers here are way cool,
and they put out nightly betas of their code... It is not without some
risk of course... But I am currently running beta software, and I love
the fact that the company is open to giving it's customers access to
software that is not quite ready for production... For the most part,
it is quite stable... I would say that you should always keep older
builds to make sure that if you install a pre-production version that
"breaks" something important, that you can always downgrade to a version
that worked well for you... I am a gadget guy... I am the family (and
the neighborhood) IT guy...so I am very comfortable here...

Form Factor - What do you want to do in your kitchen? Do you want a
single all-in-one product? Or are you planning on installing in
wall/ceiling speakers... Or are you looking to have some nice speakers
sitting on a ledge or shelf? If you want a tidy all-in-one package, the
Boom is a nice product... If you are looking to install speakers or
have some bookshelves, then either Sonos or the SB will be good
solutions for you...

I was waffling between Sonos and SqueezeBox... And I am pretty sure I
would have been happy with either (at the end of the day, it's all about
the music, right?) :) The new Cisco network music system is a new
entrant in this space that I don't know a lot about...

As you can see from my signature, I went with a SqueezeBox Duet in my
living room, along with four Booms... One in each of my 3 bedrooms
(which also double as alarm clocks), and one in my kitchen...

I also have my living room and kitchen right next to each other, and it
is great to have either different sources running in each room, or
having them synchronized without the need to blast the living room
system to have it heard in the kitchen...

Please let me know if you have any questions... I can't say I know
everything about everything... but I do no something about some things
:)

Re: [slim] Updated Squeezebox products?

2009-05-25 Thread MikeekiM

It's more than just a boom... I was talking to someone a few months ago
from Logitech, and told them that while I loved the Boom, it was still
just a little too big for me to consider it an bedside alarm clock...

What I was looking for was something much smaller (like the old Sony
Dream Machine clocks)... I told them that I really didn't care if it
was stereo or mono...just that it be made for a bedroom side table...

When I finished (and again, this was a couple of months ago), the
person told me "just wait...we are coming out with something that is
just what you are looking for"...

I doubt they will come out with a mono "cube" sized unit... It'll
probably be more like a rectangle shaped product so that they can fit
two small stereo speakers in it... I just don't see them going mono...

Re: [slim] Playing Specific Track & Artist Using a 'Service'

2009-03-04 Thread MikeekiM

I avoided a pay-for service for a long time...

In the end, I ended up subscribing to Rhapsody, which costs
$12.95/month... My rationale is that it's the price of a single CD per
month, and I have access to a huge library in an on-demand use model
(which is what you are looking for)...

Sometimes you have to pay to play... :(

I am still enjoying it... I love finding out what others with my
interests are listening to in last.fm, and then being able to access
those artists on demand in Rhapsody... It's fantastic...

Update/Edit: Based on your original post, it sounds like you are
willing to pay for this service...what changed your mind?

At the end of the day, it comes down to how the plug-in or scrobbler
decides to handle the scrobbling...

I have used 3 different Rhapsody PC-Client scrobblers (nothing to do
with squeezebox listening)... and 2 of the 3 scrobbled only the tracks
selected directly from their library and playlist tracks, but not the
tracks played via the channels...

1 of the 3 scrobbled everything... I chose to keep the 3rd one

[slim] Last.FM Radio - Music Skips

2008-12-15 Thread MikeekiM

Hi All,

When playing any of the Last.FM radio stations, I notice that I
experience some occasional skipping in the music from time to time...
I have talked to friends who use Last.FM radio streams, and they
confirm that they have this problem as well...

Does anyone know the root cause of these skips? Is it a server
bandwidth issue? I see that one of the stated "features" of being a
subscriber to Last.FM is that you get bandwidth priority... If this is
the case, could I expect to correct this skipping issue if I subscribe?

Thanks all...

[slim] Rhapsody Issue With Song Track 59:xx

2008-12-14 Thread MikeekiM

Anyone have this issue?

Song plays, next song does not...

Look on the remote and the 4 minute song has ended, and the SB remote
shows that the song has 59 minutes and some-odd seconds left to go...
And counts down from there... The only way to go to the next track is
to skip forward a song...

I can't stand this this problem, as it means I can't just play an album
and let it go... I have to go to the remote and hit skip to continue
the music...

[slim] Rhapsody Weirdness...

2008-12-08 Thread MikeekiM

Can someone explain something that seems really strange to me...

I signed up for the original 30-day Rhapsody trial subscription. It
did not ask for a user id or password (or credit card). It could only
be used on the squeezebox, since there was no log in that I could use
to use the web UI, or the PC client...

OK... Fast forward to today... I took advantage of the second
Rhapsody trial offer. This one requires a userid (email), and
password...as well as a credit card... So I start using it, then
attach it to my squeezebox, and all of a sudden, I find that my new
account remembers all my favorite artists, albums, etc...

Say what? How did it do that?

[slim] Missing Album Art Root Causes

2008-11-19 Thread MikeekiM

Hi All,

I know there are a lot of various threads on missing album art (on the
SBR), but I haven't seen a consolidated thread to collect the various
root causes...

In short, what are the known causes for missing art work when the files
are confirmed to have the album art meta-data included in the file?

I have heard that downloaded iTunes album art in AAC files are one
situation...

What other reasons would cause this?

[slim] Any Way to Automate A Start AND a Finish Schedule?

2008-11-17 Thread MikeekiM

I can use alarm to start a program...

I can use sleep to end a program...

Is there anyway to "schedule" a start and stop?

What I want to do is to have my kitchen boom turn on the local news
radio at 6am and turn itself off at 7:30am every weekday...

[slim] iTunes Podcasts in SqueezeBox

2008-10-22 Thread MikeekiM

Okay...I must be missing something terribly obvious...

Is there any easy/effortless way to access podcasts that you have
subscribed to via iTunes (and managed solely in iTunes)?

My expectation was that it was a simple synchronization with my
music... But it does not appear to be the case...

Can someone either let me know what I am missing, or point me to some
simple instructions on how to access all my iTunes podcasts?

Thanks!

Very nice! Thanks for all the support you guys provide in keeping the
products updated! I love that I can now choose between the SC and the
SN on my Booms from my SB controller...

My Boom still shuts itself off when I am in the SC and initially switch
to the SN... :( I guess this either did not make it into this release,
or is an undocumented bug...

Anyone else have this problem?

[slim] Does Rhapsody Service Allow Both PC Client and SqueezeBox Access?

2008-10-20 Thread MikeekiM

I have a 30 day trial that still has about 20 days left...

When I signed up for the trial, there was no mention of UserIDs or
passwords... No asking for credit card numbers or anything...

Three Questions:

1. When you are a paying subscriber, can you access Rhapsody both with
the SqueezeBox, as well as the PC client?

2. When you are in trial mode on the SqueezeBox, can you access the PC
client during the trial period? And if so...how?

3. If you decide to go with the free "25-Play" Rhapsody service, can
you access those 25 plays via the SqueezeBox?

OK... so gapless is only supported when transcoding is not involved,
and when you are not synching with other players... is that correct?
And the gapless play is by default (i.e., there is no software "switch"
that I need to set to get gapless playback)...

Re: [slim] (Practically) free SBR?

2008-10-09 Thread MikeekiM

For me, the biggest advantage/benefit to the new controller is the fact
that you don't need line-of-sight to control my receiver in the living
room...

I have set up patio speakers as a "SpeakerB" set from my living room
receiver, and used to have to walk over to my patio door just to
control volume and music selection...

Now, with the WiFi enabled remote, I don't have the line-of-sight
requirement... It's fantastic...

Really? Does SqueezeBox support gapless playback?

I am a relatively new user, and just assumed that gapless playback was
not supported...but if it used to work for you, I am becoming
optimistic :)

I know that my songs play gapless using iTunes (but not on my iPod)...
Listening to live albums and "non-stop" mixes would be great if gapless

I'll be paying attention to this thread :)

[slim] Pandora Works on Duet and Booms...but not Softsqueeze

2008-10-07 Thread MikeekiM

I have not subscribed to Pandora (and maybe I should and will)...

At this point I am just trying to troubleshoot and understand what is
going on... So I have had my SqueezeBox products now for about 30 days
(I am guessing, since it appears that my Pandora subscription/trial has
probably ended)... Pandora continues to work fine on my Booms and on
my Duet... But no longer works on my SoftSqueeze client...

I would have expected that if my trial expired, that it would shut down
on all my devices...but it appears that SoftSqueeze is the only client
locked out...

Can anyone explain what is happening?

Thanks...

[slim] How Does SqueezeBox Know Where I Am?

2008-09-30 Thread MikeekiM

RadioIO has a selection for local radio stations...

How does it know where I am located? I don't recall entering in a
location identifier (zip code, city, etc)... I know that the
SqueezeCenter can likely pull my timezone (i.e., "Pacific"), but that
is not enough information to filter SF Bay Area radio stations from
those in Los Angeles...

I don't have a RadioIO login associated with my SqueezeNetwork...

I must have entered a location identifier somewhere...(and can also
change it)... Where is this configured?

Additionally, why is is that some stations are missing when I am in the
SqueezeCenter, but not in the SqueezeNetwork? What would drive a
difference?

I think there is a grace period for deletion...once you pass that

I did go in and ended up deleting 5 hours of Tracy Chapman repeats the

It triggered me to look for the functionality, and I couldn't find

I agree... "new music" means that I just added it to my library...

I am somewhat of a purist... I know my friend put his in sleeves and
then tossed the cases and the back-liners...just keeping the booklet
that makes up the front cover... I could not get myself to toss the
back-liners, so I would likely do this in two steps... Put them in
liners to save space (assuming I need to access them from time to
time)...and store the cases in the attic or garage with the
back-liners... Or just keep it all together and store them together...
I opt for the latter...especially since I don't need ready access to
any of them... The only problem is that with the first strategy, I
could store the cases in the garage/attic without a big concern over
heat... But with the CDs in them, I need to store them in a less
extreme environment... Thus the Iris Media Boxes... :)

[slim] My "New Music" Isn't New...

2008-09-22 Thread MikeekiM

OK...so I haven't really played around with the "New Music" category
until now... I think it is fabulous to have a section that allows you

likely stuff you want to immerse yourself into...

For some reason, I am looking at my "New Music" and none of it is very
new at all... In fact, it looks like there is no rhyme or reason to
how the 10 that I have it limited to were even selected...

How does "New Music" work...and how can I adjust/fix it so it does what

2008-09-22 Thread MikeekiM

No... I don't know what kind of sleeves he uses...

Was that article just on burned media? Sorry about that...I guess that
is what I get for skimming the article, eh?

So what are others doing? The CD envelope route, or the
keeping-the-case route? I picked up 10 more (for a total of 12) of
those Iris Media Cases, and it STILL was not enough for my CDs and
DVDs...

I guess that brings up another great question... How are you all
storing your DVD movies? Do you use similar, or completely different
strategies... I have a small house, so displaying all my movies and
music is not preferable...I like them to be out of sight...but
accessible if needed... DVD's seem to take up a crapload of space...

[slim] Last.FM - How Accurate Is It For You?

2008-09-21 Thread MikeekiM

I love last.fm's ability to track down my listening habits...

But the thing I hate (and there is nothing that last.fm can really do
about it), is that it really only tracks what is being played...not
what you are listening to... (I know...completely unrealistic
expectation)...

Yesterday, I left my SB playing Tracy Chapman... And it was set
(unbeknownst to me) to do a repeat loop of the album... so it played
all day long... This will obviously skew my last.fm statistics...

Additionally, when you are just listening to Pandora in the background,
and move to another room while it's playing...it continues to track all
the music that you are "listening to"...

I guess my big question to all of you is: Even though last.fm cannot
really track what you are listening to... Is what is being played
accurately reflect your listening habits once you have enough data in
your profile?

I like to store the CD in it's original packaging and artwork in case I
wish to sell it to a second-hand music store...

Also, my friend went the route of storing his in plastic sleeves that
were designed specifically for CD storage (he did not use some home
made solution), and the CDs that have silkscreened labeling ended up
sticking to the plastic...when he took the CD out of the sleeve after
about a year in storage, he was unable to get some of his CDs out
without damaging the top of the CD... Again, this was only for the CDs
with the colored/silkscreened labeling...

Great thread, as I am in the process of getting my CDs out of sight,
and storing them safely... Here is a great stackable container I found
at the Container Store (they are made by "Iris")... They store 57 CDs,
which I find to be the perfect weight and size for handling...because
they are see through, I can very quickly find what I need... And they
stack really nicely... I bought two so far just to figure out the fit
in my storage space... I am going back this afternoon to get 10
more...

Nice thing, is that they also store DVDs nicely... Blu-Ray is a bit
smaller...so they don't fit as tightly...but obviously with them being
smaller, you can store more of them...

connection)... But still, no dice...

Turned on my computer... And it logged in great to the
SqueezeCenter... Switched over to the SqueezeNetwork... And success!

This is disturbing...Shouldn't I be able to use my Duet receiver
without a computer turned on, if all I want to do is log into the
SqueezeNetwork?

Any ideas of what the problem is?

Thanks!

[slim] Setting Sleep from SqueezeCenter...

2008-09-19 Thread MikeekiM

Is it possible to set the sleep timer on a boom from the SqueezeCenter?
I haven't figured out how... It's probably obvious...but I can't find
it...

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Is It Possible to Play Music Directly from SqueezeCenter?

2008-09-19 Thread MikeekiM

I must have something set wrong... cuz I got it to work...but it is
very unstable... and now it won't work at all...

The dot matrix display on the transporter display skin is flickering
like there is something wrong...and it shuts down the SqueezeCenter...

I may try an uninstall and a reinstall...

Ah...great... So it wasn't a stupid question on my part then :) (at
least as a newbie who doesn't know the history that slimserver and
squeezecenter are one and the same...just a versioning difference)

Glad I asked... So it looks like all I need to do is install the
SoftSqueeze and I am good to go!

Thanks!

Sorry... what I mean is that I went out to read about how to install
SoftSqueeze, and it has as prerequisites that I install Java and
SlimServer...

I have Java installed already...and I was just wondering if the
SlimServer was already running as a result of my SqueezeCenter
installation (as a background process, or whatever)...

If I need to install SlimServer as well, I have no problem with that...
I just want to be sure I am not installing something redundant and
unnecessary...

Re: [slim] Is It Possible to Play Music Directly from SqueezeCenter?

2008-09-19 Thread MikeekiM

Very cool! So it says I need to install Java and the SlimServer...

Is SlimServer already running on a normal SlimCenter/SlimNetwork system
(that is, is the slimserver already running as an imbedded service
within the slimcenter installation)?

Or do I need to install and run slimserver on top of everything else
that's running?

[slim] Is It Possible to Play Music Directly from SqueezeCenter?

Any chance there is a way to play music through the SqueezeCenter
(either the computer that my music library is sitting on, or a remote
laptop or desktop located on my home LAN)?

You did better than I did... The free BBQ cost me almost $1,136 after
sales tax... I picked up 3 Booms and a Duet...

I can't wait for the next one... The food was great... and I will
probably pick up some more Booms! They are great...

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter Music Scan Problems With iTunes (never ending scan)

2008-09-16 Thread MikeekiM

Can anyone confirm that they have iTunes audiobook files (m4b extension)
and can successfully synchronize using the "Use iTunes" option?

And also confirm that they are using Vista 32 with SC 7.2 and iTunes 8
(just to be sure it is an apples to apples comparison) :)

I am not sure why DRM WMAs should be a problem...but they seem to be
causing me the same issue...

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter Music Scan Problems With iTunes (never ending scan)

2008-09-16 Thread MikeekiM

Thanks for your quick reply...

No...no ampersands in any of the files... I am using SC 7.2 (which I
believe is the latest)...

I checked the log files, but they were useless...perhaps I need to
configure the logs to be more descriptive...

[slim] SqueezeCenter Music Scan Problems With iTunes (never ending scan)

2008-09-16 Thread MikeekiM

My music scans would never end gracefully... In fact, they would never
end... The clock would keep counting down until the next scheduled
update (which was the default 3600 seconds from the iTunes tab), and
then start over...getting stuck each and every time...

After a lot of heartache and troubleshooting, here is what I
learned...

* My music scans ran successfully if I uncheck the "Use iTunes" option
* When using iTunes, it kept getting stuck on an iTunes audio book,
which has the file extension m4b
* After removing this file, it still got stuck, but on the next audio
book, so I removed all audio books...and it scanned through...but got
stuck again...
* The next file was a WMA file... I decided that perhaps it was due to
some DRM problems, so I removed all WMA DRM files...
* Mission accomplished!!!

So here are my questions to everyone here:

1. Is there a known problem with iTunes m4b files (audio books) during
a scan that has the "Use iTunes" option checked? This seems silly, as I
would think that there are many people that have audiobooks... I have
never bought any...the half dozen I have are from free downloads from
iTunes...

2. Is there a known problem with DRM WMA files during a scan that has
the "Use iTunes" option checked? Again, I would think this would be
silly... Yet it is happening to me...and does NOT happen when I have
the "Use iTunes" option unchecked...

For your information (in case it matters), I am using a Windows Vista
32bit OS with iTunes version 8 (the recently released version).

Thanks all!!!

Mike
