[slim] SB3 Switching PSU replacement. Opinons?
The usual scare, suddenly the SB3 stops working... Turns out the SB3 was not dead. Only its PSU had decided it was time to go. Years ago I had the same issue (on another unit), I got a PSU out of AMZN, supposedly "made for SB" and clearly it was not. More recently (for yet another unit) I made my own USB to barrel connector cable and used an USB power port available next to the SB3. Works fine. I'm contemplating my options, between: 1 - a USB-barrel cord + some redundant mobile/iThing charger 2 - a Raspberry Pi PSU (pretty good and inexpensive, IMHO) to which I would solder a barrel connector. AFAIK this PSU delivers 5.1V rather than 5.0V Do you have an opinion or a go-to solution for this? I'm only interested in a cheap and compact solution. [slim] Interface MTU < 1500 and SB3?
I'm sorry I suppose the question has been asked already but my searches weren't very successful. I'm trying to setup an SB3 behind a vxlan, MTU 1450 The LMS server is in a VM, normally MTU 1500 The DHCP server sends (forces) MTU 1450 to clients behind the vxlan. This works w/ linux machines. I don't think the SB3 changes its MTU size as requested, basically it reboots as soon as it starts playing. I have a workaround which is to set the LMS interface MTU size to 1450 as well. Am I correct in saying SB3 will not try to adapt its MTU? If so, can we have, finally, firmware 138, with MTU size support in it!? Alternatively ;) do you see a smarter workaround than setting the interface of LMS to 1450? Re: [slim] piCorePlayer or Max2Play - comparison?
For SB replacement I would use pCP only. A machine will not perform anything and everything and stay in perfect sync at the same time. Plus if you install packages that use Alsa they might impact how the player works. Player role is rather specialised. To run LMS, the story is entirely different. The only area where LMS needs special attention (on linux) is when you want to run it on something like a router; Making it listen/reply only on the interface you want is not as straightforward as you might think, at least in my experience. Other than that, you can have a machine perform a lot of server tasks and still be a perfect LMS server. So m2p would be fine in this case I assume. Also, while I understand why people are using LMS off pcp, I find that a bit anti-climactic, since pcp is designed to run in RAM while LMS expects access to mass-storage and a database. So you end up using pcp with permanent mounts and a backing store for preferences/DB on LMS and then it doesn't handle power events much better than any regular OS anymore. My 2cts. 3 SB 3 Libratone Loop, Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) LMS 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109098 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

That's not unseen for classic SBs. I would try these steps in order: - use the remote control to perform a factory reset and a xilink reset on the SB3, - use another, known to work, PSU - Try with ethernet, - simplify the network (server, player, DHCP server alone on a network segment) - wiggle the round PSU connector in the SB3, see that it is tight and there is no rust/dust in the power inlet, - open the SB3 and re-seat the mezzanine board that hosts the wifi card. What sort of SB? In the firmware settings of the computer (or maybe in Win10 directly), can you check power management settings? Usually machines can be set to wake up from ethernet on any broadcast traffic or on WOL packets only. Waking on WOL only is usually what you'd want. Although your client (or another one...) could indeed be sending a WOL packet. Squeezelite, iPeng can do that AFAIK, the Boom and perhaps others do that at least ahead of alarm time... 3 SB 3 Libratone Loop, Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) LMS 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108872 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] IMPORTANT: Stop forwarding your LMS ports to the internet!
I backtracked on that thread (should be working instead...) and I want to say having a password protecting settings from remote accesses will be (is?) a great addition. To those with routed VPNs complaining about the extra password, I say use a bridged network, it makes player discovery work ;) In passing, I don't know the state of TOTP/QR on perl, but in my opinion a time-based password is a concept end-users grasp easily. Downloading an app and flashing a QR code is somehow an easier proposition than choosing and remembering yet another password, hard to guess please. It would be probably better to have a short, volatile 6-digit password protect the server rather than the usual "passw0rd" or "lms1234"... FLAC or WAV take a lot of bandwidth, probably the tunnel can't keep up. I have used bridged OpenVPN tunnels from time to time, everything is fine for mp3/AAC/CD-quality stuff but for hi-def or hi-quality I've seen issues. Re: [slim] Can I use several Squeezebox with several instances of the WaveInput plugin?
You don't even need Airplay. Start by choosing the OS of the machine on the sending end (near that multizone amp), and look for ways to stream live audio from that platform. The available methods will restrict (more or less) your choice of hardware for the endpoints. The possibilities are endless indeed: - networked audio device managers: PulseAudio, Jack, ... - network transport tools + local sender/local receiver : ssh, socat plus something else, ... - (live) streaming applications: vlc, shoutcast, icecast ... Squeezeboxes don't do Airplay natively. There is an LMS plugin for that, too, but I think that is besides the point. 3 SB 3 Libratone Loop, Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) LMS 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108580 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] HOW hot you Pi3 get?
53°C is quite normal. It idles more or less around 50°C at room temperature. AFAIK the board is good for about 60°C ambient and the CPU over 100°C. Around 85°C CPU temp, cores start reducing frequency. I suppose the machine halts at 100°C or so. You can put a 50cts euro coin on top of the CPU, that will help a little bit. You can also try to rotate/wiggle the DC barrel plug; I think I've seen reports of rust/bad contacts in the power receptacle. I would also examine the board for possible cold solder points or scorch marks. The wifi card sits in a daughter board. Make sure the board's large square connector is well seated, too. I have one SB3 that died some time ago (red light, reboots continuously, I could hear that by plugging earphones IIRC), the screen has what seems to be abnormal burn/fumes traces. Re: [slim] Buying a new music player
I think the main issue with a "pre-owned" SB Boom is not screen fading, this happens too on any model equipped with a VFD screen. The most important problem is that under heavy continued use, boomers may split their foam surrounds and you have to replace them. Play something loud and you would hear if there is a problem. If you want to refurbish a defective Boom, it looks like 'user JoeMuc2009 is the man' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?82497-Is-Anyone-Fixing-Booms&p=885916&viewfull=1#post885916). Re: [slim] Picoreplayer and what else
Overall, I would suggest 2 SDs or 2 Pis: - one with PCP, which "guarantees" a nice audio experience - one with a more general OS, maybe raspbian lite, where you can install stuff easily and follow tutorials posted on the net When you're happy with your software setup, if the stack does not look like a hog that will steal all the CPU cycles or I/Os from squeezelite and make sync derail, you can probably port it to piCore. This system runs in RAM, so installing stuff on it is a bit unconventional and there are less tutorials around. It's probably better to know the exact goal you want to achieve before trying to extend piCore. On a Pi3 running PCP, squeezelite takes about 3.5% of the CPU when active. There is room to spare, for sure. 3 SB 3 Libratone Loop, Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) LMS 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107745 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Does Srvrpowerctrol still exist?
There is no plugin repository URL anymore. You have to go through manual download and install. The post-install script may show a bug on your platform; if you run the script blindly and the bug rears its ugly head incorrect entries will be added to your sudoers file, you'll have to repair it manually and unfortunately you might need "sudo" to do that... To install, get the zip from github, install as a stand-alone plugin, then read the last pages of the giant srvpwrctrl thread in the 1/3 party software sub-forum. [slim] SB3 reboots after soon after starting to play
HI there. I'm sure I have seen subjects about this, but my quick search did not return useful info. I was given a SD squeezebox 3 (ether/wifi) some time ago and decided to power it up. It has a fantastic looking VFD screen. Problem, it reboots or locks up a few seconds after starting to play anything. It's not the PSU, it checks ok and the SB3 reboots also with another PSU. I did a xilinx reset. I did not reinstall firmware (137) or reset factory settings. It's not the wifi card: the SB3 reboots the same with wifi card installed or not. I've pushed on the mezzanine connector, not that it looked any loose before that. It gets a DHCP address, so I suppose it has not forgotten its MAC address. On cursory examination, I didn't see a blown capacitor or anything strange. I've used analog out only (and not for long...) Does this behavior reminds anyone of a known defect? Re: [slim] Your home-made LMS API projects
ServerPowerControl has 'a thread' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?48521-Announce-Beta-version-of-SvrPowerControl) in the 1/3-party software subforum. Since GoogleCode has gone dark the repository is no longer available. You have to download manually the plugin. Then, last time I've tried installing the plugin I've found a bug in a post-install script that could damage the /etc/sudoers file format. I don't know if the bug is still there but I suspect it is. For all these reasons, I would recommend reading post #1, then *read posts on pages 213 down* (to 216, as of now...) Installing is not complicated, even today. Simply I advise a bit of caution during post-install. Not that I really care about Bitbar or the like, but I'd like to point we have a great power management plugin thanks to gharris999. It can do this, among a great many other things (characters unescaped for readability): Code: $ nc montreux.local 9090 srvrpowerctrl screstart srvrpowerctrl screstartscrestart in 15 seconds. srvrpowerctrl reboot srvrpowerctrl rebootreboot in 15 seconds. "screstart" restarts the LMS service. "reboot" restarts the whole machine if you've configured the plugin to fit your machine's specifics. As a former user of the original Zipp, having not heard the "new" Zipp, but based on Castalla's comment I will venture that the new Zipp *Mini* variant is worth 3.5~4 stars, depending on your listening habits. Basically this smaller/lighter speaker does not display the bass and medium of the regular Zipp. Not a tinny sound, but doesn't impress in terms of range and volume as the regular model does. Sorry, you can't change that. The screen wakes up and displays the message automatically. It will eventually go away, but the timeout is long indeed. I don't think using the IR at that moment helps any either, but I could be wrong. The only workaround I can imagine is switching the SB to another working server before shutdown. Re: [slim] IR Blaster help needed
I've looked at this amp, it has no IR input, but it has a "comms" link. After a quick tour, it looks there is enough info and perhaps even ready-made software necessary to 'craft a communication cable' (http://www.meridian-audio.info/public/5serleads%5b3580%5d.pdf) and 'implement a control app (see p. 49+)' (https://www.meridian-audio.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/MConfig-Guide.pdf) I don't know if anything like an SB plugin for Meridian exists, is trivial or not. But this I know: IR control provides no feedback, and usually power on/off is a toggle. So it is extremely easy -and irritating- to entrer the state where Transporter/SB3 and amplifier are out of phase, with one powered on and the other powered off. No way out except by using the amp remote to resync its state. A protocol that gives positive feedback on actions or the current amp power status is much preferable. 3 SB 3 Libratone Loop, Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) LMS 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105870 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Help! - Squeezebox Classic (SB3) with dead screen - still plays music
I understand zilch about electronics and electricity but this I know: the VFD screen uses high voltage, there is a transformer in there that converts the low voltage current flowing from your PSU to high voltage. If your PSU is weak or if the power plug in the SB3 has some play/rust/soldering issue (you'll find posts about these 3 cases IIRC), then perhaps the transformer is not fed enough current to activate the screen. If would try wiggling the socket, or using another PSU. I don't know if a xilinx reset can help (press key "1" while booting, see 'wiki page' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Special_IR_Keys_on_Reboot_for_Factory_Reset_and_Last_FW)), but trying is easy. Reseating the wifi card or removing it if it has turned bad seem to cure all sorts of issues. 3 SB 3 Libratone Loop, Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) LMS 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105864 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Networking help
I would avoid the WDS thing and trying to extend wifi coverage though wifi itself. Ethernet or powerline are a much better solution. My advice would be to replace the APs with 2 Airport Express APs. If you have a mac, win PC or an iThing in the house you can manage them. The current model is not very recent, it's not AC but dual radio G/N and sufficient for uncompressed audio or HD video streaming. You can have them at discount price, refurb price is ~50 USD which makes it a good value, plus they offer Airplay. I have setup a 4-AE + powerline system in a large home, and it "just works". One SSID, one password, and most clients I have tested seem happy to roam from one AP to an other when they are moved around the house (with an iPad a running video stream, stream will pause for about 1 sec and restart when changing AP.) In this setup one of the 4 AEs is set to router mode. It works fine in this role too, but firewalling settings are minimal and it doesn't manage a local DNS service, only mDNS. I have fiddled with OpenWRT and Tomato in the past, all my attempts at setting up multiple APs (to be fair: using similar but not identical devices) have failed. Fiddly, and when it "worked" it never provided a convincing advantage over a single AP setup. The Airport Express is simplistic, but in multiple AP mode, it's simply night and day. my 2cts 3 SB 3 Libratone Loop, Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) LMS 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105743 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

But I believe it is possible to explain the hype. The web has killed the PC, the apps are killing the web, what could kill the apps? When you have a big database, enough CPU to do a bit of AI, and your name isn't Apple, I guess it is tempting enough to buy for scrap an audio speaker maker and try to swing a voice UI. A networked speaker is something people can imagine and buy, so now you have your beachhead. And since use for music control doesn't really work (plus music is already monetized) while IoT is looming large, you prepare to make the speaker a hub for the smart home. Does a voice-controlled home make more sense than voice controlled music? I don't think it can make less sense. But I think some marketers have seen one too many Iron Man movie. Re: Wifi WLAN Network problems Attempt to summarize the problem
So this time I've looked at the manual. This router seems quite modern and featureful. That might be a problem :) I would try this: 1 - disable auto-channel selection, 2 - set the 2.4GHz radio to b,g only (no N), 3 - and perhaps also use a different SSID for the 5GHz AP My reasoning: the Receiver is a b/g-only device, and I am not so sure he supports roaming too well (1); In the 2.4GHz band, I am about sure that if the router tries to aggregate channels the Receiver will drop. And of course only 20MHz width is supported in wifi-g. So I would try to dedicate the 2.4GHz radio to the ripe stuff, wifi-b and wifi-g only (2) The last one I really don't know, but perhaps the Receiver might try to associate with the 5GHz AP, and keel over or fail, if the 5GHz AP operates under the same SSID as the 2.4GHz one. (3) Past that, I'm out of ideas. [slim] [OT but please someone puts me out of my misery] Using BT to authenticate w/ hostapd?
I was lucky last time I asked an OT question, I've asked this one elsewhere and only got (void) as an answer... I have this Pi3 with me. It is setup to offer an AP for local use (the range is about 15m. or so, that's what I want.) Currently it's open to any MAC, as long as you know the password. I don't like that because of visitors and password management. I don't want to whitelist visitors. I don't want to corral them in a sandbox. I don't want an HTTP redirect à la hotspot, it doesn't resolve the password management thing. I'd want (I think) something like WDS, but it has to work on the Pi 3 and on any type of mobile device. Here is the idea I have that gets no response whatsoever... and I'd really like someone to tell me why this is stupid or stellar :) 1) The Pi 3 has BT built-in. BT is shorter range than wifi 2) Possible authentication scheme: start wifi + BT on mobile device, get close to the Pi. The Pi reads the BT MAC (or some device ID?) and stores it. Now connect to hostapd. Hostapd asks the BT-managing daemon if the mobile's ID is known already. If it is, let it log in for X hrs. This would give me an "open AP" but only to people that were allowed to come close to the Pi. I am replacing digital protection with physical protection. I can't find any software that vaguely implements this idea. Will someone here tell me why? You can be rude. [slim] Wildly OT question: webdav or CIFS for iPad file browsing?
It's in the title: I don't think the question has much to do w/ LMS (not for me at least), but I hope Pippin or some other member knowledgeable in all things iOS can put me on the right track. I have a server with the classic user|workgroup ownership scheme. The platform is linux, clients are Macs, fileserver is netatalk, user authentication is local. - Ideally I want to offer the same view when browsing from an iPad or from the Finder: identify as user foo and see 2 shares: "foo's homedir" and "shared files" - An ok solution would be to allow separate access to the 2 shares when identified as user foo. (I expect providing a page or cgi showing both locations is easy.) - Files accessed will be the usual PDFs and MS Office documents. R/W access is expected. I understand this is feasible with webdav (I'd like to use lighttpd) in conjunction with fuse-bindfs (to remount the tree as www-data) and would use an autofs executable map to do the mounts. Messy, but feasible I think. I see some file browsing clients for iOS advertise support for CIFS. Samba has always bored me and I remember no end of interoperability troubles with macs or win PCs in the old days. Would you choose webdav or CIFS as file sharing protocol for an iPad? If CIFS, should I let go of Netatalk and replace it with Samba, even for desktop users? Sorry for the bo-ring question, and thanks in advance for sharing your views. 3 SB 3 Libratone Loop, Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) LMS 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105496 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

alnames wrote: > Being in a similar situation, I just use my smartphone connected to my > home network. I use OrangeSqueeze on my S5 but there are apps for > Iphones as well. I would say this is the sensible answer. After all if you're using a dedicated work PC and a VPN that redirects the default route to HQ, although you have admin rights, the intention was probably not to allow users install anything that would open the PC to the outside world. With an app on a personal device you'd have a perfectly good experience and the work PC can stay in its cocoon. If you don't really want to do that, or if the security policy is not that stringent, just start another network card on the PC (wifi or ethernet, physical or virtual) and connect it to your home network. Your work PC will have one connection to each locations at the same time. That will work unless both networks have the same numbering scheme, e.g. 192.168.0.0/24. Just remember that if you were given remote access to the work network, an admin there might access to your work PC just the same and examine what's going on. The right decision depends on what your organization (really) wants. (BTW, years ago in a time of thinner pipes, VPNs that would redirect the default route to the remote site weren't the norm. That was considered a super secure setup. Nowadays the "hide my ass/make me appear as being in another country" feature has made VPNs popular, so redirecting the default route has become a default setup from which it can be surprisingly difficult to evade...) 4 SB 3 Libratone Zipp Mini iPeng (iPhone + iPad) Squeezebox Server 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson AirPlay Bridge by philippe_44 WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105476 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] [iPeng] [Feature Request] offline playing?
Reminds me of this guy who years ago launched an app that would take what was playing on the iphone music app and run it in LMS when entering in range of a known LMS server on wifi. Terrific idea, I bought the modestly priced app immediately. But most of the time it wouldn't work, I think the guy dropped the project. I for one, have really no particular love for the music player in the iPhone. I would switch to using iPeng all the time in a jiffy if offline mode was available. And considering the native music app will only accept AAC or ALAC (and mp3?) when most of my library is FLAC and the remaining part in mp3, I could accept the constraint of converting (duplicating) part of my library to AAC, and have iPeng local mode work off a library view. In any case, my phone was the expensive expansive 16GB iPhone 4, I'm set to move to the new "made for the emerging markets" SE in 16GB. And my music lib is about 500GB. You can do it Pippin! Also of note, the slimdevices SB3 had the brand 'slimdevices' embossed in the back of the device, while the Logitech Classic had a smooth back (but it seems early Logitech devices were shipped with the slimdevices-branded plastic shell). Slimdevices SB3 have been shipped with 2 different IR remotes over the years, the first was modeled after the SB2 remote. Slimdevices SB3 were available in black/black, silver/black, silver/white color combinations. Logitech Classics are only black/black... and it is not exactly the same black for the front fascia. I think the screen color might have slightly changed as well; I would say the Logitech Classic display had more green in it, but I can't compare as my Classics are in storage. Re: [slim] wireless access denied
Ok so now I've read your story from the start. It looks like a wireless interference issue because players drop all at the same time, on any of the 2 APs. And it seems that the connection can get bad enough for DHCP leases to fail to go through sometimes. The 2nd AP doesn't seem to help, and it is a local source of interference... I would suggest to shutdown one of the 2 APs for the moment. You have a mac laptop. Can you look repeatedly at the mac's wireless connection, possibly to catch a change in wifi AP settings between a state where players are OK, and players get down? The most practical way to do this I think would be pressing the alt key and clicking the wireless fan icon on top of the screen. With alt pressed, you can already see some details about your current connection. If you do this often enough you'll see if your AP has changed its setup, causing your mac to follow suit, but causing the SBs to drop. Or perhaps the interference comes from the outside. With alt-click on the wireless fan icon, you can select "Open Wireless Diagnostics..." at the top of the menu. A dummy wireless assistant will pop up, but you are interested in the "Window" menu item of Wireless Diagnostics: the Scan window is particularly interesting, it reports SSIDs, channels, channel width, signal strength etc. (scroll to see all the columns.) To run a scan, the wifi interface has to be up, but you'll see more of the landscape if you disconnect from your own AP before running it. (alt-click the wifi fan icon, there is a "disconnect from " option) Writing this I ran a scan and there is one bully in my neighborhood, that uses 40MHz channel width in the 2.4GHz band. He's rather far (big negative RSSI number), so that's no problem. If you routinely get info, perhaps you'll see a change at the moment the SB drops. There is also "Monitor mode" that can catch everything the wireless interface of the mac is able to "hear". But this generates an intractable packet dump file that can be read with "tcpdump -r " in the console or with WireShark. I wouldn't want to go there myself. Good luck ;) 4 SB 3 iPeng (iPhone + iPad) Squeezebox Server 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput, Triode's BBC iPlayer by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld ShairTunes2 by disaster123 Local Player by Triode Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103343 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The squeezebox are the only G clients I own. I *believe* OBSS allows/disallows using a channel frequency that might be unused by neighboring routers. So that would allow/disallow your router from opportunistically bonding additional 20MHz channels to increase throughtput. So the max speed in wifi N, over a single channel, would be 150mbps (instead of the 300 or 450 possibly advertised.) 5GHz (wifi-ac) is not a bad option if you can deploy it, it's a much less crowded space. Mhh. There is little doc on the Zyxel p8702n available in a language that I speak... But I think this device is dual band, dual radio, a/b/g/n. Since the squeezeboxes were born in the wifi g era, I would make sure the router doesn't use funky 2.4GHz wifi-N options. Channel width should be set to 20MHz, and OBSS Coexistence should be disabled. Hi philippe_44, That would be [b],[c],d for me: - I like the fade-in/out + smart crossfade combo but I can live without and actually I have stopped using it a while ago when I had a software player in the flock, and never brought it back in use. So quite an optional feature for me. - Regarding transcode, I am sure willing to edit a cryptic text file. The caution here is that my main server is on a VM, but all the other servers I use infrequently or administer for others are running on embedded targets: Geode LX 800 or ARMv7. While loading the CPU to the gilt is no problem on those dedicated machines, they can only do so much. 4 SB 3 iPeng (iPhone + iPad) Squeezebox Server 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld ShairTunes2 by disaster123 Local Player, BBC iPlayer by Triode Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105060 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Synch issues
I understand the airport is wanted for its wifi capability while the network is handled by a cable box. If so, you want the Airport Extreme to work as a "wifi access point". I use an airport express (the white hockey puck) in this configuration: on the rear the Ethernet cable is connected to the plug which has an icon that looks like a sun. Well maybe it's a star or a doughnut... It is -not- connected to the LAN port, which is indicated by a double-pointed arrow icon. (But I think it would work as well.) You have to hook up the thing and then reset the AE. When it is reset (blinking orange led IIRC), fire up Airport Utility on an iOS device or on the Mac. You'll soon meet a wizard, tell him you want to "*create a wifi network*" with your new AE. This means in fact setup access-point mode: the AE will handle the wifi bit, but will be just another client on the existing network. It will not start a DHCP server or anything else. This is what you want AFAIK. Regarding wifi settings, just go with everything the wizard recommends. The SBs should be happy with that. The wizard will perhaps ask if you want to define a password for the AE. That would be the password needed to alter the configuration of the AE. You can use the same as the password used to connect on wifi, or you can define a separate password. Go with a separate password if you fear someone who knows the wifi password might wreck the setup. Long message but it is very easy. The hardest part is probably to get the thing to factory reset. Re: [slim] [Preview] iPeng on Apple Watch
Well then. You "have the app" already, so you just have to wait for Apple to make a more capable device. Then app developers will make it a compelling device (maybe.) Personally I find these wristwatch reboots totally out of place. But at the same time I can't see how we could do without wearable computers in the near future. Hence I doubt Apple will drop the product, I believe they will (try to) improve it. In the meantime, why don't you reinvent the itunes visualizer on the aTV4... Oh well, maybe not. But here is one OK device in need of a few good apps :) 4 SB 3 iPeng (iPhone + iPad) Squeezebox Server 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld ShairTunes2 by disaster123 Local Player, BBC iPlayer by Triode Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103693 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Regarding depreciation, such a V2 wouldn't be much of a problem for people who own an Entry or Premium V1. Middle-market customers could be slightly peeved. True, my remark only applies to manageable switches. Re: [slim] Weird networking issue: SB2 v SB3
Obviously I am a bit late to the party; but anyways. For my part I have sometimes witnessed troublesome behaviour from machines (not from an SB3, yet) connected to switches that have "green ethernet" features activated. If your switch is relatively recent you may have those features activated, and perhaps the SB3 does not like it. Normally you can change the settings for a single port only if you need to. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104765 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I only conducted sync tests between an SB3 and an AMD Geode machine; it was good, but not quite good enough for 2 sources in the same room. I guess I'll have to shell the money for a couple of RPis, and see how a homogeneous group behave. (And rebuffering occurred easily in my tests since LMS was also on the Geode, and the SB3 in the group forced resampling of high-res songs...) 4 SB 3 iPeng (iPhone + iPad) Squeezebox Server 7.9 (linux) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput by bpa IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) Server Power Control by Gordon Harris Smart Mix, Music Walk With Me, What Was That Tune? by Michael Herger PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld ShairTunes2 by disaster123 Local Player, BBC iPlayer by Triode Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins. ---- epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104682 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
