[slim] Pleasant surprise

2011-04-02 Thread gutted

For quite a while I've been on v7.3 of the server software (I think my
old version used to be called Squeezecentre?). I've always been a
little worried about upgrading - I don't remember a time (previously)
where an upgrade wouldn't end up with several hours/days tinkering to
get the software running the way I want it. I never found it to be the
case that the software would simply work properly, with all my
settings and plugins etc, after upgrade. (Working - or specifically
working properly - is a little subjective, but hopefully you know
what I mean). After very recently playing around with MusicIP, and
getting it working (without all that much hassle as it turned out) I
decided to go for an upgrade to SBS 7.5 (see sig).

So after a long preamble, all I wanted to really say is that I'm
pleasantly surprised. Things seem to be going ok, and SBS is now
rescanning my music library (the rescan seems pretty quick, too).

Heh - I never would have thought it. Well done to all the developers
who are working on this stuff as it's come on leaps and bounds since I
last dared to upgrade...

That's all. No complaints. No problems (yet?) All good. Just
thanks :)

Re: [slim] Somebody has to say it.

2008-06-07 Thread gutted

I found this thread through a search. I'm considering upgrading to a
newer version, and wanted to see if the system will keep my settings or
whether I'll have to reconfigure everything again. (Again). And you
know what? I can 100% sympathise with the OP on virtually all points
raised. I, personally, am not so worked up about it - but that's
because some other poor soul has already gone through the effort of
upgrading and has encountered all these problems that would otherwise
have hit me too.

I love these forums. This community has always been extremely helpful
when I've had questions, even when I've had stupid questions where the
answers were just a search away... But seriously though - for the most
part, I feel the responses have been pretty hard on the OP which I find
surprising. So - the OP is more or less letting off steam. He/She has
had problems, and isn't describing them with an end to fixing them - OP
is just being angry about basically feeling let down about a couple of
things. I can *completely* see what they mean! That's why I actually
found this thread in the first place! If I didn't know how much of a
hassle it was to upgrade (from experience going back several years of
SB ownership) then I would have blindly went ahead with new version and
- most likely - got myself in same situation as OP.

Here's a list of OP frustrations that I can completely understand:

-Software reliability...
I can't remember a SS upgrade that has gone 100% without problems. A
noteable one in my case was due to a brand new bug that actually made
listening to music impossible until I rolled back the changes. So I
can understand when someone gets annoyed that they've upgraded and hit
several problems and has had to downgrade again. Because I've been
there.

-Effects and animation...
Ok - so OP and myself have a different opinion on this, I guess. Sure,
animations don't impress me that much but it's not something that cause
me to be annoyed.

-Settings...
Heh. I am *so* with the OP on this. This is such a valid point, and
is the ENTIRE REASON I even found this thread and have felt motivated
to respond. This has been a hassle every single upgrade (for me).
Reading that the system would keep current settings and then finding
that some were still missing would annoy the hell out of me, too. Are
there caveats to this? Are they documented? I'd like to avoid this
frustration too, please.

-Slim Network requirement...
If the system requires SN to be up and running, then I'm again with OP
on this.

-tray icon...
You've got to admit - it's fairly pointless, no? And just because OP
(and a considerable percentage of other customers) are on Windows isn't
a reason to be facetious.

-Slim/Logitech: You guys/gals...
The point here? Squeezebox is awesome. It requires SS, which in turn
means that -once you've installed and configured it- (typically a
couple of hours to get it exactly right, in my experience) then SS is
awesome too. I think OP is trying to say that it would be great if you
could download SS/SC, install it, then be up and running in 5 minutes
without the (frequent) hassle of tinkering to get it set up properly.
It doesn't work straight of of the box. I've been using it for 5+
years and it's NEVER been right straight out of the box. I would
challenge anyone who says otherwise.

-Me: I'm dumb for wasting my time writing this...
Sadly there was not enough info on any of the issues to know what
caused them (and therefore they can't be fixed). And original poster
now has downgraded again. But I honestly was pretty shocked at the
tone of some of the responses. He got no empathy. He ranted (which
wasn't cool) but he had valid points. And yet the majority of the
responses were either along the lines of well it worked for me or
even derogatory.

-Me again: I'm also dumb for upgrading to 7...
Once again - I know exactly what this guy means. That's why I'm being
really cautious about upgrading. And you know what? It's scary that
people have to be so cautious before even considering an upgrade. It's
-sensible- to have an element of caution - but you need to be almost
paranoid when considering an upgrade or SS/SC. That can't be right,
surely?!

I feel like I've gone on a whole rant myself, which freaks me out a
bit. Sorry for that. I just felt (and continue to feel) complete and
utter understanding of the frustrations of OP and I was quite shocked
by what seems (to me) to be such an unsympathetic attitude that seems
to have been adopted in response to those frustrations.

When did things all get so unfriendly?

Re: [slim] Linux help... using rsync

Thanks lads. I really am liking the idea of rsync as an alternative to
SyncToy as a backup of my music RAID array, so will persevere to try
and get it working... I've posted on a couple of other forums to find
out whether the hardware I'm using is capable of running mount.cifs
(that looks to be the simplest, if it's possible).

But again - cheers for your help and advice, guys. Much appreciated!

[slim] Linux help... using rsync

2008-04-27 Thread gutted

So - this isn't SB related, but wondering if anyone can give me some
advice on how to efficiently backup my music drive?

My music is on a Windows (2k) file server, but I recently bought a
cheap NAS with a Linux OS. I'd like to use rsync to check for changes
on the Windows file system, and then make any changes as required on
the NAS. (Until now I've been using MS Synctoy, but Synctoy doesn't
delete folders that have moved or been renamed - and you end up with
loads of empty folders in the backup destination).

Anyway - rsync looks good, but I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to
Linux. I guess that the Linux OS can't read the Windows filesystem at
the moment, and I'm expecting to have to mount the music drive within
Linux.

I've done some googling, but now yet found anything all that helpful.
Can anyone give me a couple of pointers (e.g. a link to a tutorial, or
even just general info)?

Cheers in advance! (and sorry for asking such a blatantly non-SB
question :)

 2. Mount this to your Linux box

 3. Perform the rsync. The --delete flag also replicates deletions from

I'm doing something sightly different now as I bought a 1TB WD Netbook
(as sold by PC World for £150) which after a few simple hacks turns
into a tiny Linux server so my Windows box isn't involved any more but
this backup method worked fine when I was doing it.

Dude - you rule :) Thanks, man.

And yep - I've done exactly same thing as you: I bought a WD MyBook
World Edition (MBWE) 1TB drive for £150... I've already done the same
as you and SSH'd into it and added Optware and then rsync (and a couple
of other bits). Even after a firmware upgrade, the transfer speed is
hellishly slow :( I'm hoping rsync might be a bit more efficient in
backing up my music...

Cheers again for your advice - I'll get onto that now.

EDIT: I see that you've also decided to ditch compression... Me too :)
It's one of the first things I read about when trying to reduce CPU
usage on the MBWE, given that the transfer speed is already so poor.
It's such a shame that the hardware can't actually cope with gigabit
Ethernet speeds - but I guess at £150 I can't really complain...

Re: [slim] Incorrect tags hanging around after rebuilding DB

I gave that a try - still same situation. I use MP3Tag so I selected
all MP3 tracks (approx 40% of my library) and clicked the Remove Tag

Short of uninstalling the software, deleting the directory, then
reinstalling from scratch - is there a way to delete the database and
let slim rebuild it for me?

That was my first attempt (see original post) but sadly it didn't clear

I guess there is either a corrupt tag in one my MP3s somewhere, or
there is more to it than simply ditching that file.

Next step: uninstall, delete directory, reinstall. Sigh.

Unless anyone else has suggestions on how to delete the DB and start

[slim] Incorrect tags hanging around after rebuilding DB

2008-02-20 Thread gutted

Slimserver reports that I've got 0 tracks by 0 artists for year 199.
I guess at some point I'd incorrectly tagged something with the year
199 and then corrected it - but Slimserver still thinks it's there
somewhere.

How do I ditch this? I tried taking a backup of and then deleting the
file C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Cache\MySQL\ibdata1

The file started out at something like 100MB. After Slimserver started
up and (I assume) rebuilt the database, the subsequently generated file
is around 10MB.

I thought that would probably be the end of it, but the dodgy tag still
remains :( How do I completely blitz the DB and rebuild it from
scratch?

(I've already tried using the clear library and rescan everything
option - this runs automatically every evening, too).

Re: [slim] Incorrect tags hanging around after rebuilding DB

I'm using a mixture of MP3s and FLAC (I'm gradually re-ripping all my
music to lossless).

I'm fairly certain that all MP3s only have ID3v2 tags, although having
said that I just checked my MP3Tag options, and see that I still had
ID3v1 checked (along with ID3v2, and APE).

Slimserver still tells me that there are 0 tracks with 0 artists having
year 199. So it thinks there is at least one file with an incorrect
tag, but can't tell me what/where the file is. You think cleaning out
any ID3v1 tags might fix this?

I thought you had to write the value of imported goods on a label which
is stuck on the outside of the package? If -not- then that's a very
cool trick which I'll employ next time I buy something from the US.

I recently bought some bits and pieces from US which cost me something
like $200 (which included a FedEx cost of something like $90). On
arrival to UK, I was charged an extra £40(ish) for clearing and
import duty. For goods which cost around $110, I ended up paying an
additional $80 (!!) on to the shipping price which, in itself, was
already kind of high.

The time that's displayed on the SB3 is picked up from the machine

[slim] Can SB3 decode a DTS signal?

2007-11-03 Thread gutted

I'm in process of re-ripping my CDs to FLAC. To speed up the process,
I've started looking for torrents of stuff that I already own (e.g.
where someone has already done the work and ripped stuff to FLAC for me
:)

I recently downloaded a FLAC encoded CD which apparently has something
to do with DTS. There's a readme file included with the download which
says Warning - make sure your system can read a DTS signal. I tried
out one of the tracks, but SB3 just outputs a bunch of white noise.

I guess this means that SB3 (or slimserver) can't decode DTS? Is there
a way round this, or is it easier to just dig out the original CD and
rip it myself?

Cheers!
Dan.

I've done some searching on this forum, and it looks like maybe SB can
play the FLAC files but only depending on the sample rate (?) they were
encoded at.

Er... Any way I can re-encode them using metaflac or something?
What's the deal with DTS anyway - is it actually worth any effort? As
per original post, I actually have the original CD stashed in the attic
so it's no great trauma to actually rip from the original - but in
trying to save myself some time I've become kind of intrigued by the
idea of DTS... What's it all about, anyway?

Meantime - cheers to the other guys who've offered me something useful.
I don't have a suitable amp, so unless it's easy to re-encode/transcode
then I'm wait till I get the rest of the albums down and start working
through them. I've only recently finished ripping my CD singles and it
was a bit of a chore - not looking forward to working my way through all
the albums (again :)

Cool - thanks dude. But again - I don't have a suitable amp, so it

[slim] Backing up music library

2007-10-22 Thread gutted

I currently use MS Backup, and this weekend ran a manual backup after
upgrading a few drives for larger capacity. The backup time is crazy
(it took well over 24 hours to backup and verify around 240GB of data)
so I was wondering if anyone can offer some advice...

I currently use normal backup option. There are several different
types (differential, incremental etc). I chose normal because I
wanted to make sure that every change gets backed up - even if I modify
FLAC tags, but maintain the last update timestamp (which is my preferred
way to go).

I wasn't sure if MS backup is clever enough to know that the file has
changed even if the last update timestamp remains unchanged. So to be
safe, I just chose normal backup.

So basically - is MS backup clever enough to detect differences in
files (e.g. tag updates) even if the last update timestamp is
unchanged? If so, what is the best backup option to use -
differential, maybe?
If MS backup won't be able to detect that change, is there any other
backup utility I can use instead, and that will detect updates to
tags?

Cheers!
Dan.

Re: [slim] Backing up music library

2007-10-22 Thread gutted

Hmmm. Yeah, that's the problem. I configured MP3tag to maintain the
last modified timestamp... The reason for this is so that I can easily
see which albums were recently ripped to FLAC and which ones are still
MP3 just by looking through Windows Explorer.

If the timestamp changes when I modify tags, then it makes it tricky to
tell which albums have recently been re-ripped to FLAC (I might have
changed the tags in some of my MP3s, so then it would look like these
albums were recently added).

There are ways round this, and I can just adopt a different system -
but if I can find a backup tool that is clever enough to detect changes
to tags, then that would be the ideal solution...

[slim] ' smart gain selection ' replay gain option

2007-09-23 Thread gutted

I searched this forum (search string = 'smart gain selection') and also
the wiki (search string = 'smart gain') but not found anything yet.

What does this setting do? I guess it will choose the most appropriate

what criteria denote a suitable setting?

(Or is my guess way off the mark, in which case what does the setting
actually do? :)

[slim] Upgrade advice - keeping all current settings

2007-07-15 Thread gutted

I'm currently running 6.3.1, and am going to try 6.5.3 since I've heard
several good things about it. I don't actually have all that many
problems with 6.3.1, though there are a couple of things that I'd like
to see resolved hence going for the newer version.

Last time I upgraded (I tried 6.5.1, I think) I was forced to downgrade
due to almost all tracks cutting-off a few seconds before the end. I
think maybe the problem might have been affected by the hardware; since
I've recently gone for SB3 (from SB1) I'm hoping I'll fare a bit better
with 6.5.x

But I digress. I've always found it a fair bit of hassle to upgrade
slimserver what with the various plugins and stuff that I have to
upgrade at the same time. This time I'm thinking of soething a bit
more drastic... Uninstall 6.3.1, delete the slimserver folder, then
install 6.5.3. Problem is this would wipe out all my settings (I
guess). Is there a file or 3 that I could save then restore after
upgrade to ensure I keep all my settings? Or is that a
different/better way to upgrade from 6.3.1 to 6.5.3?

Any advice appreciated - many thanks!
Dan.

EDIT: I just noticed that my sig sstill says 6.5.1. That's incorrect.
I upgraded for a very short time, but reverted back again for reasons
mentioned above. That probably means that the plugin versions are also
incorrect. Probably best to ignore the first line of my sig :)

Re: [slim] Upgrade advice - keeping all current settings

2007-07-15 Thread gutted

Nice one - thanks dude. I'll probably have to can my plugins anyway: I
upgraded them when I tried 6.5.1, but not sure whether I put them back
or not (AlienBBC currently not working, so need to reinstall the
correct version for example).

It's more the preferences that I'm concerned about, and looks like
you've covered those in your post above :) Anything else I need to be
wary of? I'm probably going to start out by simply renaming the
original folder so I can restore any files as I need - but if any
pitfalls I should be cautious of when moving from 6.3.1 to 6.5.3, would
be grateful for a heads-up.

Thanks for your post though - looks like the prefs file is the one I
needed to know about.

Dan.

[slim] Praise for SB3

2007-07-08 Thread gutted

Only very recently, I'd been using SB1. I loved it, of course, but my
wife was never all that enamoured because it was prine to drop-outs -
particularly when playing FLAC format. When playing MP3s, the higher
the bitrate the higher the frequency of drop-outs. My server isn't all
that powerful, but it *should* be powerful enough to cope with it (I'm
using a 1.4GHz CPU, with 512MB RAM, using ethernet connection - old
certainly, but should be enough to run SS).

Anyway - I recently bought an SB3 and I've got to say that it's an
amazing improvement over the SB1. I've not yet noticed any drop-outs
-at all- in many hours of playback. Where previously all I'd need to
do would be to make a couple of changes to the playlist through the web
interface to cause a drop-out, I've not encountered any of that yet.

As per a previous post a couple of weeks back, I'm still a bit put-off
by the Logitech logo (especially since I -love- the analogue VU meters
so a constanly looking at the SB) but the performance and reliability
is such an improvement that I'm learning to deal with my brand snobbery
;) :)

If anyone has an SB1 and gets an occassional drop-out that they find
irritating or off-putting, trust me: upgrade your SB - the difference
is quite astounding! Even my wife is back on board again now :)

Re: [slim] Praise for SB3

2007-07-08 Thread gutted

That's what I initially thought, though it happened even when connected
to the ethernet. I assumed t was something to do with bandwidth, so
installed GigEthernet hubs, cards and cables so that bandwithd would
only be limited by the 100mbps port at the SB1. When increasing the
badnwidth didn't help, I just assumed it was something to do with the
decode on the server side (but never managed to match the drop-outs
with any CPU spikes on the machine running SS). Before I switched to
SB3, the last theory was that it was something do with buffer
under-run, since the drop-outs seemed to be getting almost regular.

But yeah, with native FLAC decode as one of the key reasons for
upgrade, I installed it and it's been working like a charm for a good
couple of weeks now - including a good 3 or 4 days of almost continuous
playback :) :)

[slim] Very annoyed and disappointed (not with SD - read on...)

2007-06-23 Thread gutted

So - I'm a brand snob. I admit it. Whether you agree or not, it
doesn't bother me: it's a personal opinion an everyone can have their
own personal opinion.

My opinion? I wanted to by an SD-branded SB3. I don't really want a
Logitech-branded unit. It's the same unit - there is no difference
between the one which has Logitech on it, and the one which has Slim
Devices on it other than the name.

If you think I'm an idiot, then that's fair and you're entitled to that
view.

So anyway - I've been hunting for an SD SB3 for a while. eBay has been
my only real option. I found some on eBay, and contacted seller to ask.
Seller seems to be selling a lot of these units.

First auction I found, I asked him: is it SD or Logitech? (I explained
why). No answer.

Second auction, next day, I asked him same question with same
reasoning. No answer.

Third auction, the following day, I asked him same question with same
reasoning. He finally responds with a single word: slimdevices. I
follow it up asking about the logo on the unit itself and the box it
comes in (and also the colour). He tells me it's an all black unit, in
an SD box with SD logo.

I buy it.

It arrives this morning and you want to guess what? It's in a Logitech
box. I'm not going to open it, as I can guess he'll be saying you've
opened it, now you can't send it back. Waiting to see whether he'll
sort it out, but not hopeful.

Dammit though - I'm furious about this :(

Meantime - anyone want to buy a Logitech-branded unit? It cost me £175
delivered so it'd be £175 plus PP (which looks to have been around £8).
Still a bargain, and cheaper than your average retailer. But Logitech.
For those of you out there who aren't bothered by such things, you'd
get yourself a bargain.

:(

Of course, regardless of what SB3 you get, all firmware updates now

Yeah, I know. But I rarely see that. It's extremely rare that I need
to reboot my SB1 - when it's not playing, it just displays time and
date. But I simply don't want to have a Logitech logo staring me in
the face all the time - and our lounge is small enough that the
Logitech logo WILL be visible the entire time, unless I modify the
unit. And to be honest, I dodn't want to go through the hassle of
removing the logo - I wanted an SD brand name, hence why I searched and
thought I'd found one.

Seller has actually gotten back to me, which is a surprise. He says
he's always gotten SD units in the past and will try to get an SD unit
from his supplier. I'm not holding out much hope of him getting hold
of an SD one.

Re: [slim] Slimserver 6.5.1 Problem: Songs Cut Off

Wow - you guys are lucky as hell.

I just checked description for bug ID 4354, and the notes suggest that
this problem happens for maybe 1 in 100 songs. Or even 1 in 50.

Are you kidding me??? This is happening to -*virtually every song-* on
my system! That's the reason I posted immediately after upgrading to
6.5.1

Is anyone else getting this problem to the same degree as me? If so,
it's got to be worth logging on to bugzilla and adding your vote to the
bug. So far it only seems to have 4 votes (5 including mine). I don't
know how much difference it makes (if any) but voting for it has got to
be better than not (?)

Example - in the last 5 songs I've just played, 4 of them had the end
cropped. If I can stick with 6.5.1, I'm very lucky if one in 10 songs
is NOT cropped.

[slim] reporting against slimserver DB?

2007-02-28 Thread gutted

I did a quick search (using search terms database reporting) but
didn't find anything: apologies if this has already been discussed and
I've not looked deep enough yet!

But anyway. I kind of like to report against my tags, as it helps me
identify corruptions or badly tagged files. for example, if - among
the various genres I've got - I find a genre called Trace Techno with
only 1 file, but I also have a genre called Trance Techno with 30 or
so tracks, then I can make corrections as necessary.

The way I've currently been doing it is to export all tags from MP3Tag
to a text file, and then report off that. It strikes me that it would
be cool to have this info in a database of some sort. Then it strikes
me that this info is -already- in a database: the slimserver DB. (I
think it's MySQL?)

So anyway - can I plug into this DB with a standard reporting tool and
read what's there? Is it encrypted or anything? Has anyone already
done something like this?

I work for a software house that makes a reporting tool - so the
benefits for me are 2-fold. I can get a clearer picture of my tags,
plus I can get to grips with new company software by using it at home
against my tag library :)

Possible? Already done? Any comments?

Cheers!
Dan.

[slim] last.fm and FLAC tags

2006-10-12 Thread gutted

So - I'm currently at work and don't have access to slimserver. (I
can't connect to softsqueeze from here, either).

So I'm currently using Winamp. I know, I know. Please don't flame me
:P

But when playing FLACs, my last.fm stats aren't updated. I know
last.fm is working, as it's picking up MP3s fine.

So my question is - can anyone confirm that slim will update last.fm
when playing FLAC (e.g. is this just a Winamp prob) or can last.fm not
handle FLACs?

Cheers!
Dan.

[slim] Re: last.fm and FLAC tags

2006-10-12 Thread gutted

I'm playing local FLAC files from my laptop HDD. (I bought some CDs
while I'm down south, and ripped them to FLAC for when I get back
home).

It's good to know that Slim will update last.fm after playing FLAC -
cheers for the confirmation.

I think aubuti is right - it must be a problem either with Winamp
itself, or with the scrobbler. The scrobbler works fine for MP3, but
maybe I need to confirgure it for FLAC or whatever. But it's not a
major conern, so long as Slim updates last.fm (which it does :)

Cheers!
Dan.

I'd like to move to 6.5, but I know that some are still having a few

Wondering whether anyone knows when next SP is due for release, as am

some...?

[slim] Album year vs track year (is there already an IDv3 tag for this?)

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

My collection has a number of Greatest Hits type albums.

I'm a but fussy with my music tags, and when I see a track I like to
know whan that track was released, and not necessarily when the album
was released. As such, I edit all my tags from compilation or best-of
albums and correct the tag to show year of track (not year of album
release).

I know some might think it a bit sad, but it's just the way I like to
have it working.

Slim doesn't seem to like it. It might just be the whole
various-artists problem that I've not correctly configured around yet,
or it might be that Slim sees an album with the same artist but with
loads of different year tags and gets upset. either way, Slim (quite
correctly) doesn't know which year to display for the album because,
according to my tagging, the album was released across a number of
different years :)

Basically - is there already provision in the IDv3 tag to allow for

Album year - e.g. the year the compilation was released
vs
Track year - e.g. the date the track was originally released

If such a thing already exists, does anyone use it, and how is your
Slim configured to deal with it?

Cheers!
Dan.

[slim] Re: SlimServer 6.5.1 - incorrect artist count

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

Could it be related to the various artists functionality that has been
introduced in the later versions?

As in - SS might be listing 113 unique artists (including one artist
called Various Artists at home page, but if you have compilation
albums, then each artist may be listed separately in the albums view
(so Various Artists becomes 350-odd separate artists).

That would rely on you having a high percentage of compilations though,
so perhaps not relevant to the symptoms you see.

[slim] Re: SlimServer 6.5.1 - incorrect artist count

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

There've been all sorts of headaches with the new functionality :( I
know that the official response from Support is that Slim no longer
'guesses' and now relies on 'proper tagging' but it's a change from
previous versions that confused plenty of people :) :)

There are a couple of settings you can play with to see if your library
statistics change... I don't have access to the interface now, but
there's a setting (probably under Bahaviour where you can choose to
group compilations separately by each artist vs group compilations
under same artist (or something like that - I'm sure someone else
herre will be able to correct me, and give you the proper
place/setting).

If the library stats change when you play with this setting, and -
importantly - correctly reflect what you should have, then let us know
as there is a new tag you may need to add to your library to make slim
deal with the albums correctly.

[slim] Where did bitrate limiting go?

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

I've got my SB running via the ethernet cable now. In theory, there
should be no worries about bandwidth any more. There are only a few
devices on the ethenet LAN, and the hubs/switches are both gigabit
capable (to service my fileservers).

So I want to remove bitrate limiting or at least set it to highest
value.

But I can't find the setting anymore :(

I encountered it when I had problems with AlienBBC a long time ago, and
I turned it down to AlienBBC working... LAME is indeed installed on my
server in the correct place. But I can't even find the part that says
LAME appears to be installed correctly. I'm sure it used to say that
somewhere in the server settings?! I went through each of the server
setting tabs and used my browser to search for the words bitate
limit and LAME. But I didn't find what I was looking for.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Cheers!
Dan.

[slim] Re: Cannot connect to slimserver

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

Are the laptops running a DHCP server, by any chance?

The router, by default, will have it's own DCHP server and should be
asigning an IP to the squeezebox. But if laptops are also running
their own DHCP server, then maybe that is confusing things.

In that case, perhaps the laptop is giving the SB a new IP address as
soon as you connect the wi-fi enabled laptop and you can no longer
connect to SB via the router?

[slim] Re: Slim 6.5.1 and MusicIP problems

2006-10-03 Thread gutted

Jeff - do you store MIP music fingerprint into your tags? If so, then in
theory, a quick(ish) test would be to create a new music folder (test,
for example) with only 1 track in it. You could use MIP to store
fingerprint into the track tags and then get Slim to try and scan the
track in; if that fails, try removing the fingerprint data and rescan
the single track again.

If it is, indeed, something to do with fingerprint data and you
performed the test above you could log it as a bug (?)

[slim] Re: Multi-home squeezebox? Can it use both wi-fi and ethernet at same time?

2006-10-01 Thread gutted

Fantastic - thanks lads!

Yes, slimserver is already running on one of the multi-homed servers.
I've got a mini LAN which is basically just 2 fileservers (including
my music server) and I occassionally plug a laptop in there to watch
films from the other server. Routing is set up between them, so
whenever the filservers communicate directly with each other, they only
communicate via ethernet.

I've only got 1 router, for the WLAN. I guess I should set up one of
the fileservers as a DHCP server, too, as currently when I plug my
laptop into the ethernet I need to manually configure my IP, which is a
bit of a pain.

But it's cool that I can speak to slimserver on the WLAN, and then SB
can read music wirelessly. I'm hoping that I'm get rid of wireless
dropouts I sometimes encounter.

That's really good news - and thanks again for your help!

Cheers,
Dan.

[slim] Multi-home squeezebox? Can it use both wi-fi and ethernet at same time?

2006-09-30 Thread gutted

I want to connect to my music via ethernet cable, and want the
slimserver to be able to connect to SB wirelessly.

I've actually got two LANs at home - my WLAN is on a different subnet
to my LAN. While my music server is multihomed (so in theory slim
could communicate with SB exclusively on the ethernet LAN), the
wireless laptops can only connect to the WLAN.

Is it possible, therefore, to speak to slimserver from laptops
wirelessly, but then have SB communicate with the music server on
ethernet? I'm not sure, but I think this would require SB using both
wi-fi and ethernet at same time.

I've not tried to get it up and running yet, so maybe it will all be
fine with SB using only the ethernet. But just wanted to run it past
you guys for advice.

Cheers,
Dan.

[slim] Can't connect to SoftSqueeze, or remote Slimserver

2006-09-28 Thread gutted

Strange problem... When I'm in one specific area, I can't connect to
the SoftSqueeze of the remote web panel for Slim.

So - from home, I can connect via my DynDNS name (e.g. I go outside the
local LAN, and can connect to Slim/SoftSqueeze. Additionally, friends
from different parts of the country (e.g. someone from their home
around 200 miles away, plus also a colleague in the same company but a
different office about 150 miles away) can connect fine.

But when I'm in my normal office, I can't connect. I thought, at
first, it was because there was some network security from my office.
In fact, I found that one of our internal apps use port 9000. While
working at home, and with a colleague in the same office testing, I
tried a range of different ports (even including port 80) but still
couldn't connect from the office. I put it down to the fact that the
office security is too tight and gave up.

But I found yesterday that when I try to connect from a house close to
the office (the place I stay when I'm working down here) that I
couldn't connect either! I've found 2 places (in the same town) where
I cannot connect. Is it possible that I can't connect from this
particular town?!

Anyone got any ideas? It's really bugging me :(

Cheers,
Dan.

[slim] How to stream slim to where I work?

[slim] Download playlist from slimserver

2006-09-11 Thread gutted

Is there any way I can download all tracks from a given playlist as
-actual MP3 files-? (MP3 in my case, though the same of course applies
to other formats)

I have a playlist I formulated and I want to take those tracks to work
with me, to merge them with another couple of playlists. A few of us
are getting some stuff together for a work party.

With playlist in front of me, I clicked Download but discovered it
imports the playlist into my default player (Winamp, in this case).

I was kind of hoping I might be able to download the individual tracks
to my local PC.

Is there a way to do what I want? Or do I need to manually gather up
the tracks from the physical location?

Cheers!
Dan.

[slim] Security question - multiple user-profiles to access slim?

2006-09-11 Thread gutted

Sorted out slimserver to stream it through my firewall - I now can
access my music collection from work. Good news for me, but perhaps
not so good for my employer :)

But anyway - I was testing that it works, and asking various friends
around the place to try to access it to see that it works... In the
course of this, I've been telling everyone to download softsqueeze from
the main SS web panel, rather than play around with SS itself.

It strikes me that it would be excellent to be able to have multiple
user profiles access SS remotely. e.g. an Admin/root user profile, and
a guest profile.

Is this already possible? Or do guests need to have my username and
password before they can run softsqueeze from my library? I'd like my
friends to be able to play from my music library, but I don't really
want to give too many people a login to the web interface; I can
imagine that at least one of my mates would find it hilarious to start
it playing on full volume at 2am on a Saturday morning or something. I
want to remove that temptation!

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Dan.

[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-09-11 Thread gutted

I've not read all the posts in this thread yet, so apologies if this has
already been mentioned.

It would be excellent to be able to cancel a scan part-way through. My
library, in the scheme of things, is quite small. even so, a scan takes
well over 30 mins. Others must be quite literally hours...

Option to cancel a scan part way through would be ace :)

[slim] Is it worth creating a bugzilla entry for this...?

2006-08-05 Thread gutted

Under the Moodlogic section in Server Settings, it says:

SlimServer can use your MoodLogic program as source for title and
genre information. Additionally you can generate instant mixes on
genre, artist and song level. Check the box below to import your
MoodLogic Library information.

It might sound like a dumb question, but is it possible to -ignore-
Moodlogic title and genre information, yet still generate instant
mixes?

I've found Moodlogic database to be pretty rubbish, and the tag info
messes up my own otherwise quite tidy tags. I don't know exactly how
ML works, and probably the case that SS requires totle/genre info to
generate ML instant mixes.

But if possible, would be ace to keep instant mixes but ignore title
and genre info.

So - possible? Or not...?

Incidentally - thanks, Fairy, for highlighting the setting about album
grouping. This has, indeed, turned off the Various Artists thing

Setting COMPILATION tag fixes the problem if I want to use Varous
Artists.

Disabling album grouping, as per your suggestion, turns off Various
Artists.

I'm now one satisfied customer :) :) :)

Thanks again!

@MrSinatra: I use MP3Tag to edit my tags. The COMPILATION tag is

create custom tags. So I added a new tag (in fact, I think I needed to
edit the name of an existing tag) and called it COMPILATION. I then
set this to have a value of 1 and re-scanned. Problem now solved for

[slim] Re: Hmmm....2nd thoughts on buying SB3

2006-07-24 Thread gutted

I still own an SB1, but having seen an SB3 in the flesh I can say that
they really are attractive machines, and the pics you'll find on the net
don't really do it justice. You'l be surprised at how good it looks if
(when) you buy it :)

It's true that the wireless models *can* experience problems. But I
believe this is true of any wireless device. When I first got mine, it
took a while to get it set up and working as I wanted it - mainly due to
wireless interference (nothing to do with the SB). And bear in mind I'm
still using the old SB1 - I understand there have been many improvement
since then (not least that it now runs wireless G).

Go for it. When I first got mine, it was a great feeling to hear
tracks that I'd not heard before - it gave my CD collection a new lease
of life!

Do it. You know you want to.

MrSinatra,

With MP3Tag you can filter on various things. In my library, I've got
each individual disc in a folder name like artist name - title. So
in my case, I just filtered the file path to include Various Artists.
That gives me all my comilation albums available for edit - then you can
tag the whole lot in one go.

It's pretty cool - and it's freeware. There are loads of other tag
tools available, but MP3Tag is working well for me right now.

Cool - thanks for your reply, Fairy.

I've tried cahnging setting for Use MoodLogic (e.g. I turned it off)

[slim] Re: Various artists - multiple entires for same disc

2006-07-23 Thread gutted

Fixed? (Maybe?)

Been reading a few other threads on related issues and I followed a
suggestion to add a further tag to all MP3s which are from Various
Artist compilation albums. It's relatively straight-forward in my
case, since all individual discs are in folder names of artist -
album title (with disc number, if appropriate.

In all tracks having path name including Various Artists I added a
new tag called COMPILATION and set this to have a value of 1. In
middle of a rescan right now, but it looks a lot better. Only getting
one entry per individual disc, so far.

Never used this tag before - previously it was not added to any of my
MP3s. Maybe SlimServer now uses this tag since 6.3, and was upset when
it couldn't find it?

Whatever the case, it certainly looks a bit better now. Will report
back if the problem re-occurs after the rescan is completed.

(Still using MusicMagic at the moment, by the way)

2006-07-23 Thread gutted

Go to the server/cache directory (typically this is at C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Cache) and rename the file called
slimserversql.db. This is your library database.

Slimserver should be stopped when you do this.

Having renamed it, slim will now build a brand new one (e.g. will build
a new library DB, which should remove any dodgy or duplicate entries).
You can revert back to the old one, should you need to, by restoring
the old slimserversql.db you renamed previously.

[slim] Various artists - multiple entires for same disc

2006-07-22 Thread gutted

recently upgraded to the 6.3.0 release, but I noticed this even in
earlier releases (I think I first started seeing it in one of the 6.3
nightlies).

What's the deal with various artists category? I see a listing for
various artists when I browse albums or artists - it's kind of
annoying, and I want to turn it off. Is there a setting to disable
it?

Aside form the fact that I'd prefer not to have it, it seems to list
multiple entires for the same disc. I'd expect it to list more than 1
entry for same album if same album spanned more than 1 disc... But
even on single-disc albums (with all tracks released in same year) I
see several entries.

It looks like the disc is divided into sections: I'm getting a separate
disc entry for artists beginning with D, another one for artists
beginning with O, and yet another one for artists beginning with R
and S (combined). So for this particular album I have 3 different
entries for teh same album.

Firstly - can I turn it off? Secondly - if I can't turn it off, can I
at least change a setting so that I only have 1 entry per disc (or
better still one entry per album, including where album has multiple
discs)?

Cheers!

On my system (see sig) the CPU usage more or less hits 100% during a

it might creep a bit higher if I had a larger music collection.

Have you recently added any music to increase the library size?

2006-06-02 Thread gutted

I've followed your advice and ditched my MIP fingerprint and data tags
from all MP3s. I stopped both MIP and ML and then rescanned everything
to hopefully clear the corruption. Then I've restarted MIP and ML, and
slim is in the middle of a rescan again.

I think you're right on both counts - the MIP fingerprint and data tags
are having an impact, plus MIP and special characters are a bit of a
problem. I've been scanning through some of the posts on the MIP
forums, and both the extra tags and special characters were mentioned a
couple of times.

For the record, I'm also seeing blank squares in some of my tracks -
notably those with special characters. These would also appear to be
the same tracks where the year tag suddenly disappears. (Though the
year tag problem has also happened on nomal tracks)

[slim] wireless hardware - Apple Airport base-station and adapators

2006-05-31 Thread gutted

I've done a bit of research on he best hardware available, and found
that my current hardware (US Robotics) might be in need of an upgrade.
Accroding to the Which? consumer association (UK), it looks like Apple
Airport base-station gets best marks.

They also provide some info on the Apple network adaptors (for Mac OS).
It looks like these are also pretty good :)

Just wondering whether anyone knows if Apple have yet (or will ever)
released a wi-fi adaptor for generic 'Wintel' PCs? Either that, or is
there any sort of PCI adaptor which makes it possible to install the
Apple card? (Or would that simply not work? My knowledge of Mac
architecture leaves a lot to be desired!)

I'd like, if possible to stick with same-brand networking to be able to
take advantage of the turbo or extreme speeds, greater than 54Mbps.
Though I'd be interested to know if anyone is using the Airport Extreme
with non-Mac PCs and how the general network speed is...

[slim] Re: wireless hardware - Apple Airport base-station and adapators

2006-05-31 Thread gutted

Fair enough - I'll see what I can find in the wiki, thanks :)

My main concern is that the USR kit has a tendancy to fall over if/when
transferring a large amount of data over wireless. From what I've
heard, most wi-fi routers or access points have their own little
quirks. (I've heard horror stories about USR, D-Link etc). Was hoping
to find a device that is basically robust and reliable, hence why I was
looking at Which?

Has anyone done (or is it worth doing) a poll on which hardware people
are using? If there is a thread, can anyone direct me to it?

I hear lots of nice things about Netgear, for example. Anyone had any
problems with Netgear, or does it suffer the same sort of quirks as
most/all other kit?

Indeed, that's what I'm after. I've kind of steered off the main

best (based on various bits of research) - but yeah, that's my main
reason for posting. Cheers for the info and link to the thread - I'll
check it out :) As for which particular bit of kit I'm looking for,
it's the complete package - I'd get a router first and then match all
the PC card and PCI cards to hopefully take advantage of the turbo
speeds.

Fair comment ;) It sounds like most (maybe even all) routers suffer
from this, then. Maybe it's not worth my upgrading my USR for a while
then :( Currently I only have MP3s, though I'm planning to move to
FLAC at some point. But even streaming with a bitrate limit of
anything more than 192 causes problems on my home wi-fi LAN :( :( :(
Trying to stream FLAC over wi-fi (if my understanding is correct) is
just not going to happen with my current setup :(

Cheers for the tip about the Belkin kit - I'll have a look at that,
too.

I checked both versions of the tag information (v1 and v2) but couldn't

I'll check the playlists - I don't actually use playlists (and it

MoodLogic generates loads of playlists, so I'll see if maybe it's

[slim] Phantom tags - WTF do they come from?!

2006-05-29 Thread gutted

Was having a few problems with 'corrupt' tags. Date tags in particular
were not being displayed, even though the MP3s were correctly tagged.
Full rescan (from within web interface) didn't fix it so I took a
backup and then actually deleted the .sql file from the hard drive.

And now I see a dodgy tag and I can't figure out where it came from.
In my defence, the MP3 is one of my wife's ;) But the problem is so
irritating, I'm willing to brve the shame and embarrassment disclose
details of the offending MP3:

Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Thru This.

There is only 1 file on the server like this - it has the same
filename, except with a '.mp3' on the end.

Yet slimserver can see 2 tracks:

Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Thru This
Daniel Beddingfield - Gotta Get Thru This

When I try to display track details of the phantom one, nothing is
there - e.g. slim can't tell me which file this bad data is coming
from. I have checked the tags and ALL versions of ID3 tags are
synchronised - I can't find any bad data anywhere. So where is
slimserver finding the bad data???

The data is good in MoodLogic interface, too - I had automaticaly
assumed ML was the cause, but it checked out fine.

Bear in mind that this is actually physically deleting the slim
database and rebuilding it from scratch - there should be no cache of
any sort (?)

How do I track this and/or remove this bad data from the slimserver??

Any help appreciated. Cheers!

[slim] Why does slim keep rescanning my library?

2006-05-28 Thread gutted

I've got the rescan music library set for 5:00am each day. So
whatever is going on, it's not that.

Symptoms are that every now and then, especially since installing
MoodLogic it seems, slim decides it will rescan my library. The web
interface *doesn't* say that there is a scan in progress, though it's
fairly obvious for a couple of reasons: 1) a rescan has quite a
distinctive CPU usage pattern; and 2) the disk temperature goes up
drastically during this time (e.g. this is the disk that stores ONLY my
music - nothing else). So - clearly something is scanning only my
music, and the CPU usage profile suggests (very strongly) that it's
slim.

Any ideas what's going on? It seems that any changes/corrections to
song info though the MoodLogic interface trigger some sort of rescan.
Not sure if it's a full rescan, or if slim is looking for changed or
added music. Not 100% sure, in fact, that it's a slim rescan - but it
certainly does look like one ;)

NB - when correcting data through ML interface, I'm not updating tags
as such - I'm just correcting my local ML database, as some of the ML
identifications are not right.

Cheers!

Good idea. Previously, both MIP and ML were set to the default of 60 -
this has now been changed to 86400 ;) And as it happens, slim has just
finished the rescan so I'll try again and see if I can trigger a new
scan.

As an aside, I'd be interested to know what your MIP configuration
settings are. Any chance you can post the details? Either that, or
(if easier or more appropriate) you can mail me at dan_goodinson AT
hotmail DOT com.

EDIT: nope :( That didn't fix it :( Changed an entry in the ML
database, after having set the new value for the reload interval, and
CPU has gone crazy again. slim.exe is the culprit, and as before it
looks like a rescan. :(

Most info in my sig - but the web panel reports the following:

1022 albums with 6397 songs by 609 artists.

Other details:
Intel SE440BX-2 motherboard, with an adaptor to allow installation of
the 1.4GHz Celeron chip.
512MB Crucial RAM.

Soundcard is actually disabled in this particular PC, as I don't use it
for anything other than storing MP3s and running slim.

EDIT: reason that mine is all MP3 is because at the time I started
ripping my CDs I couldn't afford the disk space. Now that prices have
come down so much, I plan to get a couple more disks at some point and
begin the long process of ripping everything to a lossless format.

I totally agree :) I've got a Boy George track, which is on one of the

[slim] Year tags becoming corrupted :(

2006-05-27 Thread gutted

A while ago, I spent ages updating all my tags to include year. In
fact, more than that, I spent bl00dy ages going through each Best of
style complication, and setting each individual track to the correct
date of release.

Beginning to see some corruption in my tags though - SB is supposed to
display the year at the end of the track, or display nothing if no data
exists. But several tracks are popping up that show a year of (0).
I've checked these tags, and all data seems to be correct - it's just
that SB (or SS) is reading them wrong (or something).

I recently upgraded to SS 6.2.2. I also recently installed MoodLogic.
I also upgraded all other plugins at same time.

I've tried a complete delete/rescan of the library from within SS. The
only thing I've not yet tried is physically deleting the library from my
hard-drive and letting SS properly rebuild it.

Anyone got any ideas why the year data is beginning to get lost? It
almost seems like it's getting worse - I barely noticed it at all the
other day (so I thought I'd just missed a tag or something). Now I'm
seeing it all over the place :(

But on the strength of the short test-run, I've got to say that I'm

[slim] Re: Is there still a moodlogic plugin for Windows?

2006-05-21 Thread gutted

Thanks KDF.

I found it in the end. Reason for the initial question is that I'm
looking to try out MoodLogic, now that there is a new version
available. A friend of mine, who first introduced me to Squeezebox in
fact, reckons that he find MoodLogic mixes a bit better than MusicIP
mixes. He feels that the generated mixes contain more complimentary
songs.

Given that MoodLogic seems to be still hanging in there (and releasing
a new version) I thought it worth a try.

Sadly the database seems to be a bit of a mess, and the tracks
submitted by users are not always correctly tagged. It's true that
I've found a couple of incorrect tags in my own MP3 library thanks to
MoodLogic; but at same time I've had to spend HOURS correcting the
MoodLogic tags so that they are in sync with my own libary. (Otherwise
SS thinks that I have multiple tracks - e.g. tracks by 'Charlatans, The'
(from my library) and various duplicate tracks by 'Charlatans' or 'The
Charlatans' from the MoodLogic database).

Anyway - having sorted a good 75% of the tags, now going to give it a
try to see if the mixes really are any better than MusicIP. SS
rescanning my library now... I'm holding out for something special,
given all the hours I've put in :)

Anyway - thanks again or your response, KDF: much appreciated!

[slim] Re: Squeezebox keeps dropping out

2006-05-18 Thread gutted

I also have an SB1, and when I first got it I encountered exactly the
same problems as you (e.g. the intermittent reboot of SB).

Even though my wireless signal strength was very high, like yours, I
still put the problem down to interference. Indeed, trying different
wireless channels affected the frequency of the reboots.

Given that I'm UK based, I can use channel 13 (not available in the
US). I've found this to be by far the best and most stable channel for
my location. I've also got a pair of +5dB antennas on my wireless
router to try and pump out a stronger signal and overcome some of the
random blips that kill my SB1. I've not had problems for quite a
while using this configuration. I still get the occassional drop-outs,
but it's limited to once every couple of weeks now - rather than the
initial once or twice per hour.

At the time I was debugging it, I couldn't detect any other wireless
LANs in the area - I think one of our neighbours has a cordless phone
or something :( Since then, however, I've started to notice a couple
of other wireless LANs popping up, but so far these don't appear to
have increased the number of drop-outs on channel 13.

Hope that helps!

place is unfeasibly small and there genuinely isn't a lot of space to
put stuff. Finding a new niche for an SB3 would involve some sort of
serious re-arrangement of the lounge. It'd be easier for me to just
find an SB2! :P

[slim] Re: Another 6.2.2 issue - 'corrupt' tags

2006-05-17 Thread gutted

Yes, this would totally work. (And I've re-scanned numerous times since
the upgrade, even without the automated re-scan each night).

The strange thing, though, is that if I add all tracks from chillout
genre, for example, I'l get a couple of corrupt tags. If I then
clear the playlist and add the same tracks again then the corrupt
ones will be fine again. I've yet to identify whether different tracks
will be affected or whatever.

So - the actual library is unaffected. By me talking about corrupt
tags, I'm being a bit misleading since only the playlist is affected.
Perhaps I should say corrupt playlist instead.

Attempting to play one of the corrupt items in the playlist, SB reports
unable to open file for track - it's as if SB can no longer see that
file, though I know beyond any doubt that the filename has not changed,
nor has the file location. And If I search on that file manually, SB
can see if and play it fine.

[slim] Sb2?

2006-05-16 Thread gutted

I like the shape of the SB1 and SB2 - but SB1 lacks native FLAC decode
and wireless G speeds. I'd really like to keep the look of the SB1,
but with additional native FLAC decoding and improved wireless...

Can't find SB2 for sale anywhere - can I still get them from Slim
Devices? Or do I have to go for a 2nd hand one?

Nothing against the SB3 as such, just kind of prefer the style of
SB1/2. But if I went for SB3, what other enhancements (other than
wireless G and FLAC decode) would I get with SB3?

[slim] Re: Sb2?

Thanks ceejay. I've been keeping my eye on eBay, but nothing turned up
yet. (In fairness, though, I've only been looking for a couple of days
so far). Lots of SB3, though - like I said - I actually prefer the
old-style look of the SB.

Fair enough then - will keep my eyes peeled and see what I can find.

Thanks again.

Excellent - thanks again. I'll keep monitoring every couple of days, in
that case.

Couple of questions though...

I'm UK-based... Can I simply use my existing SB1 power supply for a
non-UK SB2?

Also - it SB2 *definitely* wireless G (not B)?

Once again, thanks to both of you.

Next step is to find an SB2 on eBay :P

Cheers!

[slim] Re: Another 6.2.2 issue - 'corrupt' tags

2006-05-16 Thread gutted

Yes indeed - MP3Tag is my tagger of choice (though I've also got
MP3TagTools around, somewhere).

I don't use MusicIP as a tagger as such - it would be handy to use it
if I spotted an incorrect tag while using MusicIP Mixer, though I've
found that whichever tags it updates are subsequently missing when I
check in MP3Tag.

So - when I say I've been adding tags, by this I mean I've saved
archive analysis into music. This adds a new tag called MusicMagic
Fingerprint (I think) into the MP3.

I don't use MM to actually edit tags as such.
