Personally I can't stand auto-faded stuff, done by winamp or anything
else. Hearing the off phase beats running over each other, unpleasant
key combinations and overlapped vocals makes me cringe. I like my music

Re: [slim] Start of next album track plays in error

2008-02-26 Thread radish

Have you confirmed the problem isn't your files? For example, have you
listened to the ends of them in some other player? Are you using single
file + cue sheets or individual files per track?

I can't think of a good reason why SS would start playing a new file
which wasn't the next one on the playlist, seems very arbitrary.

Not directly, the controller communicates directly with the server and
displays the same data in it's own menus. You can however use the web
interface from pretty much anything with a browser.

Re: [slim] Remote Control Feature Request

OK I just did this on SC7:

1. Check my favorites list is empty.
2. Go to an album and hit add to favorites
3. Repeat for another album
4. Check the favorites list - I now have 2 defined
5. Press and hold 1 on the remote - the first favorite starts playing.
6. Press and hold 2 on the remote - the second favorite starts
playing.

This is default, out of the box, SC7 functionality. I can't comment on
how that differs from SN as I don't use it.

Slimserver doesn't do range blocking (as far as I know) so you'll need
something else to do that. My router has that feature (well, you can
fake it with the firewall) but not all do - check yours. The proper way
to do this would be to setup an apache server and use it to proxy
slimserver - then you could add any amount of security and filtering
you wanted.

That IP (66.249.67.120) really is owned by Google. So if that isn't

I don't think you really want to run the script when SS starts up, you
want to run it when the machine comes out of sleep. SS remains
"running" even when the machine is asleep, it doesn't really know when
it's woken up. What you want is something which can hook into windows'
power management states and trigger the script (or whatever) on a state
change.

That you'd have to try, no idea if it would work. But you could
certainly have an RSS which lists all the mp3s directly and they should
play - that's all a podcast is.

Another option would be to run a upnp server on the box in question and
then use the built in upnp browser in SC/SS to play from it. That
depends of course on whether you can install the server but there are
some pretty light weight ones, looks like even some in perl and other
scripting languages which should run on pretty much anything.

No, it isn't, they're fundamentally the same. I don't believe that
MrSinatra does think we should allow spam, and that's the point. We
don't tolerate spam on the forum because it's noise that adds nothing
to the general conversation. I would categorize some (very, very few)
posts in the same way, and I don't see why they should be treated
differently just because they were written by a person not a robot.

What I was implicitly asking MrSinatra was where do you draw the line?
He stated that speech should be free, and that we should simply ignore
what we don't want to read. That's a perfectly fine opinion (and one I
have a lot of sympathy with), but that would imply that we should stop
deleting spam and just let the visitors ignore it. Personally, I think
that would make the forum less useful, and so the spam should be
deleted. Likewise, I think there are some posts/threads which also make
the forum less useful. No difference.

Seriously...the vast majority of buttons on the remote are pretty self
explanatory, and I haven't heard many complaints that people simply
don't know how to use it. The complaints seem to be centered around a
misunderstanding of how Play works. I mean my TV remote has a lot of

If you are getting stuttering when the buffer is at 100% it's nothing
to do with the network, wireless or otherwise. You have another
problem, and to be honest it's not one I've ever seen before. Do you
get the stutters at the same point on tracks? The only thing I can
possibly think of is file corruption.

I'll repeat (again) what many others have said on this thread and
others - wireless networking is a messy, messy thing. It's a miracle it
works at all! The first troubleshooting with any wireless device should
always be to try it with a cable. Then, depending on the results,
troubleshooting can continue in the right direction.

Re: [slim] Where is fast forward and fast rewind?

2008-02-11 Thread radish

That's close, but not entirely true.

(warning, excessive detail ahead!)

For example, SB2/3 now supports OGG/Vorbis as a native format, but due
to implementation details FF/REW still doesn't work for those file
types (see http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3809). Also,
FLAC is a native type and normally supports FF/REW, but not if the user
has their music in the "one file with cue sheet" format. In that case
the server is actually doing a FLAC/FLAC transcode which prevents
seeking (see http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1426). I'm
sure there are more edge cases.

On a local network the router isn't doing anything, the devices are
responsible for knowing their own IP addresses and communicating with
each other. You could set all the IPs manually and not even have a
router, just a dumb switch, and it would all work fine (and that's how
we used to do it!). DHCP makes things easier to manage by allowing a
central device (in this case your router, but it doesn't have to be) to
dish out IP addresses to anything that needs one. When it comes to
actual communication it doesn't matter where the IP came from, just
that it's unique.

Agreed 100%. Many of us are here to help and genuinely want people to
have a good SB experience, but it does grate when people (typically

Then you should be happy that you're so lucky. It doesn't matter
whether it's late beta or whatever else, if it's not an official
release than the only thing anyone in the dev community will do if you
find a problem is thank you and add it to the bug list. Most companies
don't let you run the beta software for exactly this reason - to
prevent people who don't understand what pre-release means getting
upset when it breaks (which it inevitably does). If I were having a big
party which I wanted to use SC for the first thing I'd do is downgrade
back to 6.5.4.

First off - please check your quoting MrSinatra, I didn't say half the
things you've attributed to me.

That aside...

I'm sorry, but this is just idiotic. You seem to be comparing things
because their both "complex". My car is a complex device, my DVD player
is a complex device, and a 747 is a complex device. Yet, somehow, they
end up costing very different amounts of money. Why? Because they are
DIFFERENT complex devices which do DIFFERENT tasks. An ipod shares very
little common functionality with a server. Here's one example, just for
kicks. Do a search on your ipod, watch how it takes up to a minute (in
my experience) to return the results. Now do the same on SC and watch
how it takes typically less than a second, even though it's searching
(in my case) a vastly larger collection.

>
> i would argue its more specialized, and a touch screen, OS and browser,
> wifi etc...
>
Indeed it is more specialised. And in this case, that allows them to
save money. It doesn't do most of the things that SS does, and so it
doesn't need the power that SS does. A Mac mini has an OS, browser and
wifi, and in fact you can run SS on it just fine. Costs more than a
touch though...why is that? It doesn't even have a screen...

>
> my point is you could specialize the hardware in a fat box to do the
> specific tasks SS does.
>
And my point is you couldn't. As I suspect neither of us are in a
position to build such a device commercially I don't think we'll get
much further, but I would point to the simple lack of such a device on
the market as evidence that it isn't as easy as you seem to think it
is. In my experience if something's easy to make and there's huge
demand, someone has already made it.

>
> no, i am saying a box that doesn't need a computer at all and that can

> product, and i would be willing to bet, is for other people too.
>
So it's magic? It can somehow run software and do all this stuff and
yet not be a computer? You don't seem to be understanding that pretty
much everything in your house with a power cord is a computer of some
kind, they're just more or less powerful and more or less general
purpose.

>
> tivo sold me a box (i gave to my parents) that cost $100 plus the $300
> lifetime service. the tivo does not need a computer EVER.
>
Tivo does not need a computer because it IS A COMPUTER. It's a low
powered one for sure, with a couple specialist chips for things like
video encode/decode, but it's a general purpose computer running a
general purpose O/S (linux). It also doesn't have enough memory or CPU
power to run SS, and the hardware is sold at a subsidised price because
of the subscription.

What's an ipod got to do with it? They're entirely different devices. A
dedicated SC box needs a lot more processing power, a lot more memory
and a LOT more storage than a touch - it does a completely different
job.

You seem to think that combining a PC and a SBR into one box will
somehow cost substantially less than the cost of the PC plus the cost
of an SBR, or that the resulting device will somehow be simpler,
smaller, quieter or more power efficient. I don't see how that can be
the case.

Re: [slim] Dead Squeezebox

2008-02-08 Thread radish

If you look closely at the screen (a dark room may help!) do you see any
illumination at all? On a functioning SB3, even with the screen "off"
you can usually see a few faint dots, from memory they're usually
towards the top left. You should also see a red light coming from the
optical port on the back.

If none of these are visible I'd say either the SB3 or the power supply
is dead.

In either case, you're probably best off calling support:

Re: [slim] Australians being screwed on price??

2008-02-06 Thread radish

Let's face it, as people have been saying for quite some time the
practise of retail prices varying from one country to another is hardly
new or uncommon. I'm a brit living in the US so I've seen it from both
sides - yes it's nice that a lot of the gear I buy is cheaper over
here, but it still stings that I have to pay $3 for an imported can of
baked beans :) As has been mentioned there are lots of possible
reasons for the price difference, including but not limited to tax,
duty, increased cost of doing business in that country (rent, manpower
costs etc), price/availability of competitors, and of course plain old
higher margins. I don't know what the tax regime looks like in AUS but
in the UK it accounts for a large portion of the typical price
difference.

That aside, the complaints that the logitech site costs more than a
retailer are kind of ridiculous. In my experience going directly to the
manufacturer is almost never the cheapest way to buy something - SD has
historically been unusual and it's largely been because they were the
main distribution point. Now they're moving stock into the Logitech
channels and out to major retailers I would expect to see those
retailers cutting prices. I picked a couple of random examples -
Creative charge $89.99 for a 4GB Zen V Plus, Amazon has it for $79.99.
Or let's say I wanted a nice new Canon camcorder, I can get the VIXIA
HG10 direct for $1099 or from Amazon for $724.82. But I don't see the
point in complaining to Canon or Creative about this situation - if you
see the product discounted just be happy and buy it there!

Re: [slim] Reset Question-Good Practices?

2008-02-05 Thread radish

That doesn't sound right, I have I think 6 units running currently and
with latest firmwares and SC7 they're basically 100% stable. I've never
had to do a "hold 1" reset, although a while ago (couple of years) there
was a period where factory resets were needed pretty frequently.

One of the key secrets I found to stability is to make sure the
server's IP is static. If the server connection is lost and it comes
back on a different IP the SB never seems to reconnect automatically
(probably by design, how does it know it's the same server?).

Re: [slim] How do you use NetStumbler?

2008-02-01 Thread radish

NetStumbler is easy. Quick instructions for your purposes:

1) Fire it up
2) If the screen is blank, hit New
3) You should now have a window with a list of networks. Sort by the
"Signal+" column, now they're arranged in order of signal strength.
4) Look at the "Chan" column, this is the channel they're transmitting
on.
5) Pick a channel for your network that is non-overlapping with the
strongest other ones. For example, I see a total of 8 networks, all of
which are on 6 or 1, so I picked 11 for myself.

I've done testing for a number of companies and there is certainly a
range of attitudes in regard to the level of secrecy etc. To me it
seems that the more innovative and interesting the product, the more
open the dev & test process. From my experience on the open side you
have companies like Serato, JetBrains and Ableton, and on the less open
side you have MS, Rio (RIP), and Sony. I agree that the transparency and
lack of legal BS from Logitech/SD is refreshing - long may it continue

I don't know a lot about ceiling speakers, we're just starting to
investigate them for our house (in the bedroom). There seem to be
surprisingly few active ones, possibly due to the need to get power to
them. You can also get in-wall speakers which may work well in

As for which would work better, it depends how loud you want it. We have

The measured power consumption goes to 0W. Effective enough? :)

I use the Gen 2 (http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/9c60/). The
build quality still sucks from the 1st gen, but the design is better.
It's almost exactly the same size as the SBR, and sits neatly
underneath it. It also comes with the PSU in the box which you used to
have to buy seperately. Having had less than great experiences with the
first T-amp I was very impressed - this one is much louder and has
really good bass. I have the amp's volume set to middle and use the SB
for control, I never get above about -15db in a 12x12ft room.

Adding DNS lookup to the player would be the way to go for this, IMHO.
I don't believe it's currently possible, but it would seem reasonable
to add. No server-side functionality will work as obviously the player
isn't connected to the server at the time of the lookup :) I'd take a
look in bugs.slimdevices.com and add an enhancement request if there
isn't one already there.

Slimserver only supports streaming as mp3, and it doesn't have any kind
of autonegotiation. That kind of thing really needs co-operation between
the client and the server, and the basic mp3 streaming protocol doesn't
include that. I believe the wma streaming protocol does (and probably
others) but they are typically far from open, particularly if you want
to build s stream host.

Re: [slim] Plugins - how to?

2008-01-28 Thread radish

Like bpa said, the announcement script is _not_ a plugin, it's a
standalone script you have to run when you want to show something on
the player. For example you could configure your email client to run it
every time you got a new email. But on it's own it won't do anything.

I see the need for an amp like you describe, but I certainly wouldn't
pay $200 for one. I have a new T-amp which is everything you seem to
want save the build quality and it's $60.

As for the poll, I wouldn't buy anything just because it says Logitech

define any of those I can't say whether I'd buy it or not.

They're certainly not as good as my Mission bookshelf speakers, but
they're not far behind my Swans M200's. If you need really small, good
looking active speakers they probably sound better than you'd expect
them to, but if you can get away with larger ones...physics doesn't
like small speakers :)

I have a pair on a desk in our study and they work well in that

the fact that it let's you try to sync them is a bug - you can't sync
streaming players only slim ones. The reason is the lack of control -
the server has no way to control whatever buffering winamp is doing.

Yes, that's the one. The build quality is _slightly_ better than the
original T-amp (which was pretty awful!) so don't expect much from the
case. However, the sound is awesome - much more bass than the original
model. In terms of speakers I'm using an old pair of Mission 2-channel
bookshelf speakers (something like these:
http://www.tnt-audio.com/gif/750.jpg) - rated 8 ohm 25-75W. And they
sound awesome with the T-amp, better than through an Onkyo receiver I
used to use.

A2 and A5 both auto-switch. Also think about pairing some regular
speakers with the T-amp, the new model sounds really good (seriously!)
and is dirt cheap (~$60). It doesn't autoswitch, but it only uses 1W
(even when playing) so who cares :)

So this is interesting. I read posts from various people asking for
ideas for small auto-switching amps. My new Audioengine A2 speakers are
auto-switching and I was measuring their power usage today (as there's
no way to tell if they're "on" or "off"). Roughly 6W playing, 0W after
the timeout (seems to be a few minutes). Excellent! Then I wondered
about the T-amp which is used in another room - it's not auto-switching
and I wanted to make sure it wasn't eating power as I frequently forget
to turn it off. It draws a whopping 1W when playing at decently loud
volume through regular bookshelf speakers. I'm not sure how that is
possible (my AC theory is flaky at best!) but I'm not worried about the
auto-switch anymore!

Re: [slim] Typos and setup question

2008-01-24 Thread radish

The controller is needed for setup because the receiver has no screen -
without that you can't tell it things like the WEP/WPA key or select
options such as DHCP/static IP. Once it's on the network it can be
fully controlled by SqueezeCenter.

There have been (strong) rumors that the requirement for the controller
may be removed in the future, so if that's a big deal for you it may be
worth waiting a little while to see what happens in that regard (as I
understand it there are some technical issues which need figuring out).
You could of course also buy the duet and once setup, sell the
controller. I'd be nervous about doing that unless the controller was
no longer needed - you never know when you might need to do a factory
reset!

Yup, I can confirm that regular unsynced playback is perfectly gapless
even with an SBC showing the Now Playing screen. Synced playback is
still not gapless (alas) - maybe one day :)

Adding multiple players doesn't have any affect on gapless playback
unless they're synced. The controller is a controller, not a player
(yet!), so it doesn't affect playback in any way and obviously can't be
part of a sync group.

The duet is two things, the receiver and the controller. The receiver

Use a crossover cable (unless the NIC on the server is auto-sensing)
Make sure bridging is enabled - go back through network setup with the

can't think of a single advantage it would give to anyone, MS included,

I can think of two problems:

1) Your suggestion requires COMPILATION to be correctly set. I would
expect that to be less commonly done in most people's libraries than
keeping to a 1 album per directory model. EAC, for example, doesn't
have a way of setting COMPILATION.

2) What if I have two different compilations with the same title?

I personally think it will go two ways. My belief (and it's only that!)
is that we'll get basic IR functionality from the controller pretty
quickly, probably an offshoot from the exisiting IR Blaster SC plugin.
I also believe that at some point (could be quite a while) Logitech
will produce something in the Harmony line which includes SqueezeOS
(which is what runs the controller). It'll be expensive for sure, but
as an avid fan of both Slim & Harmony I'd be all over it :)

I'll believe that when I see it. 50% (rough guess) of the music I buy

The duet is far from "simple" - particularly compared to the AppleTV.
The level of functionality and convenience (for audio, obviously) is
far higher IMHO.

When you have a community-built product it tends to become a

key part of what makes the product line so successful. And yes, IMHO you
can be considered successful without selling 100m units.

Actually the key is to first identify your users, then identify what
they want, and then get the best geeks you can to build it for them. As
a user, AppleTV doesn't do what I want, neither does Sonos. Maybe that
puts me in a minority, fine, so be it. I'm happy to have the option to

I don't believe so, but I haven't personally tried it.

Yes, it works just like Search on the web interface.

Re: [slim] IP Questions

2008-01-13 Thread radish

127.0.0.1 is a special IP which always means "this machine". So
Slimserver's address is only 127.0.0.1 if the browser is on the same
machine, if you run a browser elsewhere you need to use the machine's
actual IP, and likewise the players will use the actual IP.

It's a lot better than the screen on the 880, and is larger too. Without
doing an exhaustive side by side comparison, I'd say it's basically a
smaller version of the iPhone screen.
