Of that list #1 is definitely worth trying. What you're coming up against is that teh ReadyNAS Duo is hopelessly underpowered for running Squeezecenter at a performance level expected by most people. *Bottom line, the CPU in that NAS is too slow. End of story.* You can tweak and tune, but in the end you are polishing a turd. I've run SC on a slow NAS in the past and it's no fun. My rule of thumb is that is if take your server/NAS more than 1hr to do a full scan of your music library, your server/NAS is not up to the job. This is not because the scan itself is a major issue, it's because the scan is a great indicator as to the size of your library vs. the CPU speed of your server. If either push your server over a 1hr full scan it's time for a new server. I run a QNAP TS-239 which is really the minimim I'd recommend once you have more than a few thousand tracks. I'd recommend a Classic rather than a receiver for the reason of having a screen, having an IR remote as a fallback, better wireless performance, and it's offically supported set up. I'd also recommend an Atom x86 based NAS (such as a QNAP TS-239) for 2 reasons. 1) It has the performance to handle SC whereas others don't 2) x86 based NAS gives you the option of running MusicIP which is a fantastic addition to Squeezecenter If you find the QNAP TS-239 to expensive for your taste, I'd recommend a Vortexbox or build your own Atom based server. When you telnet to it, can you see the HDD, eg, do a 'cd /share/HDA_DATA/public' & 'ls' ? -- shake-the-disease shake-the-disease's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=698 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35227 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Any good tuning guides for slimserver ? Very slow browse response times on Linkstatio
Dumb question, but I assume you've split you music into "a/artist/albumn/track", "b/artist/albumn/track" etc? -- shake-the-disease shake-the-disease's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=698 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34047 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The first 2 factors are very important if the server has to be located in the same room as the SB. The third is important if you have a family to support and a mortgage to pay. The fact is takes a couple of hours to do a fresh scan my music collection is of no real concern to me. -- shake-the-disease shake-the-disease's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=698 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34911 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SB2 playback freezes
I've got a SB1 (wireless connected) and am suffering this problem of the playback constantly freezing. It has happened both between tracks and mid song. Even a rebooting the server and disconnecting/reconnecting the player doesn't solve the problem. Doing a "top" on the server during a freeze showed it was buring <5% CPU. This problem seems to happen about 50% of the time I use it. Some days it refused to play more than a minute at a time and no amount of reboots will solve it. Other days it is flawless. This problem seems to have only surfaced since upgrading from version 5 to version 6 of slimserver.
