How about SC running on a laptop wirelessly connected to the music
store myth? LOL. OK, I can accept for some people who know what they're
doing, a wirelessly connected server can work. For most though, it's
going to be trouble. I think wirelessly connecting SC to a music storage
is trouble, and doing that from a laptop not dedicated to SC duties is
going to be flat out flakey.

Such a set up is guaranteed to be problematic. The problems you are
having look to be nothing to do with SC or your Squeezebox(es). Running
SC on a laptop wirelessly connected to a NAS which holds your music
files is about the worst possible setup for stability I can think of.

SC, for stable running needs to run on either
1) a dedicated server, with music stored locally, wired to the router
2) a powerful NAS, with music stored locally, wired to the router

Your requirement #7 might be a nice fit with the new Squeezebox touch,

I wouldn't keep music separately, it just adds additional performance
problems. I'd suggest something like a shuttle case, any C2D CPU, enough
local disk for your music collection, a CD drive to rip music, all
running VortexBox.

Just don't throw good money after bad. For example, memory is not your
problem, so don't add memory to your NAS. Jumbo frames or not is
definitely not your problem, not that this costs anything anyway.
Remember, CPU speed is your problem, so if you spend any money that's
what it needs to be spent on.

The idea of a dual core being beneficial is so that 1 core is used for
the OS + any other started tasks, and SC can have another core all to
itself. I take your point on higher clock speed.

Of that list #1 is definitely worth trying.

What you're coming up against is that teh ReadyNAS Duo is hopelessly
underpowered for running Squeezecenter at a performance level expected
by most people.

*Bottom line, the CPU in that NAS is too slow. End of story.* You can
tweak and tune, but in the end you are polishing a turd.

I've run SC on a slow NAS in the past and it's no fun. My rule of thumb
is that is if take your server/NAS more than 1hr to do a full scan of
your music library, your server/NAS is not up to the job. This is not
because the scan itself is a major issue, it's because the scan is a
great indicator as to the size of your library vs. the CPU speed of your
server. If either push your server over a 1hr full scan it's time for a
new server.

I run a QNAP TS-239 which is really the minimim I'd recommend once you
have more than a few thousand tracks. Once over 30k or so even an Atom
is possible too slow and a C2D should be considered.

2009-07-06 Thread shake-the-disease

I think what you have is almost perfect for the general public. All I
could suggest are these things
1) Squeezebox Server branding.
2) Smaller case size
3) Perhaps a small LCD status screen like the 'QNAP TS-439'
(http://www.skycomp.com.au/images/products/ts_439pro.jpg) has for
example, that could show basic info; IP address, whether SC is up or
down, music library stats, connected players etc.

Multi bay appeals to me, but I'm an IT guy. The general public prefer
low cost and small which means single bay.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox receiver + NAS + iPhone

2009-06-16 Thread shake-the-disease

I'd recommend a Classic rather than a receiver for the reason of having
a screen, having an IR remote as a fallback, better wireless
performance, and it's offically supported set up.

I'd also recommend an Atom x86 based NAS (such as a QNAP TS-239) for 2
reasons. 1) It has the performance to handle SC whereas others don't 2)
x86 based NAS gives you the option of running MusicIP which is a
fantastic addition to Squeezecenter

If you find the QNAP TS-239 to expensive for your taste, I'd recommend
a Vortexbox or build your own Atom based server.

Good luck :)

Lacie can't run SqueezeCenter.

It look like you are after 2 things
1) a file server
2) an application server to run squeezecenter.

As a file server you could use any NAS, timecapsule being one option

As an application server to run squeezecenter, you could either double
duty a NAS (such as a QNAP 109) to perform the task, or use a seperate
computer to run it (eg an Asus eee-box). The disadvantage with running
SC on most NASs is slow performance for browsing & scanning your music
library. The advantage is cost.

The point I'm making is even if you could get it running, I'd suggest
it probably isn't the best choice to do the job.

If you want a cheap NAS: consider a TS109 (500Mhz & 128Mb RAM and a
supported install of SS). Otherwise a small headless desktop in a

Re: [slim] Nas?!

2008-02-12 Thread shake-the-disease

Limited budget + not much storage needed + requirement to feed album
artwork to take advantage of controller interface may not add up a NAS
as your best solution to be honest.

Re: [slim] SB3 Networking Issues: Please participate

Do those problems persist if you connect the SB3 by ethernet? They just
read suspiciously like wireless network issues to me, regardless of
what a snapshot of the signal strength is.

First confirm the IP of the TS101 and try to connect via the web
interface to it (on port 9000) via your web browser. If you connect
successfully then it's just a matter of pointing your SB at it, if not
then there is likely a problem with the installation of SS on your
TS101.

Re: [slim] Suitability for use in professional installations

2007-05-15 Thread shake-the-disease

I've run an SB1 for 3 years. The only instability problems I've had have
been related to wireless reception issues and bedding in SS on a new
NAS.

IMHO once a SB is wired and the server isn't tinkered with it is a very
stable platform.

When you telnet to it, can you see the HDD, eg, do a 'cd
/share/HDA_DATA/public' & 'ls' ?

Dumb question, but I assume you've split you music into
"a/artist/albumn/track", "b/artist/albumn/track" etc?

Compared to my old PC SS setup, my new NAS SS solution is far quieter
(no fans and a quiet HDD), far smaller and was cheap. The first 2
factors are very important if the server has to be located in the same
room as the SB. The third is important if you have a family to support
and a mortgage to pay.

The fact is takes a couple of hours to do a fresh scan my music
collection is of no real concern to me.

[slim] Re: SB2 playback freezes

2005-05-30 Thread shake-the-disease

I've got a SB1 (wireless connected) and am suffering this problem of the
playback constantly freezing. It has happened both between tracks and
mid song. Even a rebooting the server and disconnecting/reconnecting
the player doesn't solve the problem. Doing a "top" on the server
during a freeze showed it was buring <5% CPU.

This problem seems to happen about 50% of the time I use it. Some days
it refused to play more than a minute at a time and no amount of
reboots will solve it. Other days it is flawless.

This problem seems to have only surfaced since upgrading from version 5
to version 6 of slimserver.

Ahh s.o..f.r.u.s.t.r.a.t.i.n.g....
