[slim] Re: Are you willing to pay for a Sirius Radio plug-in?

2006-11-16 Thread MrSniffer

I am using V0.6.7 of the Sirius plug-in, and can effectively listen to
Sirius on my Transporter and/or SB3. But when I connect a network
player (e.g. Winamp 5.3) and connect to the URL

http://MySlimServer:9000/stream.mp3

I do not get any Sirius radio. I **do** get playback of my
server-resident MP3s.

A bug in SlimServer 6.5.0 or in the Plug-in???

Now that the plugin exists it'd make more sense to have it in the 3rd
party plugins forum. I'm not sure if someone at Slim could move the
entire thread to retain all the history as it's pretty useful for
people in debugging.

But I'd have to say I don't see what the big deal is. All you have to
do is scroll down. Obviously if there are a lot of posts to this
thread it's important to a good number of people.

This has been covered before. Slimserver does not output Internet
radio streams to the stream.mp3 thingie. There's probably a feature
request filed somewhere for it.

Thanks Tom for the detailed post. Yesterday Sirius got rid of hash
keys as part of the login scheme, which I used to use to determine if
a login/token has expired. Maybe your cached login info is causing
Sirius to get an internal server error. Try this (no guarantees):

Shut down SlimServer.
Open up slimserver.pref in your favorite text editor.
Search for sirius
Remove the lines for cookie, token, and tokenTime.
Save file.
Restart server.
Try plugin again.

Lemme know if it solves the problem for ya. It's only a guess, but I'm
not sure what else could be causing this (other than you not having
Playboy enabled).

Still having the same problem today with version 6.4. Yes playboy is

The captcha image you're referring to appeared a while back and because
it's not as random as what you'd expect the plugin is able to work
around this.

Are you using the latest version posted on the website
(www.gregbrown.net) ?

If you are, please post your debuggging output.

I just checked the plugin and it's still operating fine with any
changes Sirius did (there are actually more channels available for

Actually I take back my last post...
The plugin is still able to login/get channels/etc, however, something
else seems to have changed at Sirius. I'll have to figure what it is,
otherwise it seems like Sirius is booting logins when you try to start

If anyone has any info on this, please let me know so I don't have to

I've gone ahead and posted a new version. Sirius made a URL change
today that broke the plugin when you tried to start up a stream.

This version is tested to work with their regular/low quality streams.
I haven't upgraded (yet) to the new CD quality Internet streaming to
test it out.

If anyone has, please let me know if it works!

Try accessing this web page on whatever computer you have running

It should come up in your web browser, regardless of if you allow

 Lemme know.

That link gets Access Denied also. And I'm at home, so nothing's
blocked. My guess is it's an Adelphia and/or akamai problem, but I
have no idea how to prove it.

Thanks for your help...

Can you try again with a fresh server restart? Were all the error
messages just for stillListening? It's odd that this would be the
message as the timer for stillListening is set for 90 minutes after you
enter the plugin. It also has nothing to do with getting the channel
names. How are you accessing the plugin? Via a player or the web
interface?

Thanks

I did what you suggested and have attached the debug output. It still
doesn't work. This time I used the player interface and while it
didn't get stuck at retrieving channel data, all the Browse by...
menu items are Empty (except for the genre Talk/Howard, but that
was empty too...)

EDIT: My radio timeout was set at 5 seconds. I changed it to 30
seconds but it didn't help

[slim] Re: Are you willing to pay for a Sirius Radio plug-in?

2006-09-23 Thread GoCubs

I just tried with 6.5 release and it worked fine for me.

Basically the first time the plugin starts up when you restart the
server it has to fetch all the channels available. To do this, it has
to do quite a few web requests, if any of those fail, you have to try
again. Hopefully it'll only take a few trys.

In the past it was pretty rare for a web request to fail, but something
changed within SlimServers networking a couple months ago that seems to
make them fail more often. I've actually updated SuperDateTime to
automatically retry a request if it fails. When I have some time I'll
look into how difficult it would be to have the Sirius plugin do
something similar.

In the mean time, just keep trying! Sorry about this!

2006-09-23 Thread GoCubs

I've gone ahead and posted a new version of the plugin. It's raining
out and I was bored so I updated the http calls to automatically retry
if they fail. This should hopefully eliminate the problems people have
been having when the plugin retrieves the channel info.

My http calls at home usually work fine so its hard for me to test the
new functionality, but it was pretty straight forward to implement so
it should work.

Please let me know how it goes.

No luck here, even with the new version.

It just stays endlessly at Retrieving Channel Data..., refreshing
every four seconds.

What are the best debugging options to see what's happening?

nighlty version SlimServer_6.5_v2006-09-08.noarch.rpm and know that the
current version of the plugin worked with that. So it either is that
Sirius changed and broke the plugin or that something introduced in the
run up to the offical 6.5.0 has broken the plugin. If sirus has not
changed and I get a chance, I will try to roll back through SVN to see
at which point the plugin breaks.

If you need any additional info or would like a fix tested let me

I checked out the build from the 8th out of SVN and am seeing the same
problem. Since I know that the plugin worked with the build of 6.5b at
that time it looks like Sirius.com may have changed enough to break the
current version of the plugin.

This is already supported and doesn't require any plugin changes. Just
set the visualizer screen to one of the Extended Text modes. :)

I don't have a way to use this particular plugin, but as far as I know
the Now Playing data should be the same when it's on the second screen
as when it's on the first screen.

I just tested RadioIO (mp3 with metadata) and it works fine when
displayed on the second screen.

It should be exactly the same screen as appears on the left screen when
now playing is selected. Plugin authors can customise what appears on
the right screen, but if not I would expect it to show what you are
looking for.

Try it out with softsqueeze and the Transporter skin.

Xine plays the stream at this address fine. Also tried using a known

Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?

Thanks

The plugin is getting a valid Sirius URL, but for some reason it's
timing out. My copy here using a nightly from a few days ago works
fine. You can try increasing the timeout setting (server settings -
network, radio station timeout).

Good call, disabling built-in WMA fixed the problem.

Thanks folks!

Interesting... I'm glad to hear you finally got it working. I didn't
think MMS streams operated on a different port, but a quick google

Opening 1755 seemed to do the trick - to let the plugin run in
conjunction with Windows Firewall. Thanks so much for the patience in
helping me figure this outplugin is a great contribution.

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else got this working with
Windows Firewall without opening this port...

Thanks for the file...importing as a playlist works fine, and it plays

I am thinking it is more of a connection/firewall/etc issue at this

Is there any unique port or anything else which the sirius plugin may

Do you have any players connected to your server? The plugin requires
at least one player be present. If you don't have any, you can start

Yes, I did have both a Squeezebox2 and a SoftSqueeze connected.
Upgrading to the Aug 10 6.5 build seemed to resolve this problem.

But I am now back to my old problem once again.

I can connect, download channel data, etc - but no stream seems to get
spit out. The Squeezebox constantly says Connecting...

In looking at the SlimServer, it is getting the song/artist in the Now
Playing section - just no audio. The plug-in seems to work just fine
through SoftSqueeze, so it is definitely something in my hardware
setup...

There doesn't seem to be any errors in the d_plugin or d_http logs. And
yes, my File Types Windows Media (built-in) is definitely unchecked...

Any thoughts? I'm close to the gun-to-the-head state on this.

2006-08-06 Thread GoCubs

I've gone ahead and posted yet another new version since people seem to
be having more issues with the channel web requests failing with newer
verisons of SlimServer.

The previous versions of the plugin had two web request chains going at
once (one for the talk stations, another for music). I've separated
these so that only one web request will take at a time. I also delayed
making the song title web requests until all of the channel web requests
are complete.

Hopefully this will help alleviate the problems some people have been
having. Please let me know how it goes, if people continue to have
problems I'll have to add some logic to retry failed requests.

www.abovethelaw.com/squeeze

Also, I sold the domain I've been using to host my plugins. In the
next few days I'll be turning over the domain to its new owner and will
post a new URL for them.

[slim] Re: Are you willing to pay for a Sirius Radio plug-in?

2006-08-05 Thread megraham

Hi,
I am using slimserver 1. I have got the latest software and also the
sirius plugin. When I 1st retrieved the channel data it included
everything up to 101 then skipped to 108. I started playing a channel
and after a few minutes I decided I wanted to change the channel and I
had to back it back out to where the display said sirius then it
started retrieving channel data again and stayed there. I had to shut
off the slimserver and restart the software to get it past this step.
Then I noticed that some of the channels were missing below 100 then it
skipped from 98 to 147.

Any solutions for the missing channels?

Why wouldn't it let me select a different channel without going back to
the sirius display.

It does seem to lock up trying to retrieve the channel data everytime.

Any reason for the so called lockup?

It works fine on 1 channel.

Thanks in advance
Mark Graham

method to start the player)and noticed a problem which you should be
able to reproduce.

I wasn't able to use the Web Channel Listing (which is great, btw) to
get a player started on Sirius the first time. It will only start (the
first time) using the Remote (or virtual remote in Softsqueeze). Once a
player has started a Sirius Stream, then the Web Interface will work.

Maybe this will point to the other problem I found? It seems to
produce a similar debug log:

Here the log shows me trying to start the stream (twice) via the Web
interface:

When I try to launch a stream, I get a brief error message flashed that
says WMA conversion error check file type. I have WMA unchecked in
server settings. Using new 6.6.2 official release.

Brad-
I'm sorry you've been having so many problems. Remember this plugin
hasn't even reached 1.0... I have two friends that are also running
the plugin and they haven't reported the problems that you've been
having.

I tried many times to reproduce the problem you mentioned above with
starting a stream via the web interface and can't reproduce it.

The only thing I can think of is that you're trying to start a stream
from a web page previously loaded before restarting the server. If
this is the case, you could be requesting to play a song before the
server has logged in, built it's channel arrays, etc. and you could
probably get some weird results. Down the road I'll try to add some
error catching to cover this, but in the meantime please start your
browsing from the top Sirius page.

Please let me know if you're still having the problem.

I've done quite a few changes to my local copy since the last post.
I'll wait before posting another version.

Greg:

First off, I appreciate your efforts on this plugin. I love being able
to listen to Sirius via Slimserver. I can't develop in Perl, but I am a
developer (python, C#, vb), so I know what you go through. Everyone
makes mistakes, but it would be helpful if you would make a best effort
unit test of all functionality before posting each new version.

Thanks for your continued efforts. Are you saying that there is a
second 0.5.2 version? I couldn't get that version to do anything
earlier in the day. Currently playing in two different rooms on 0.5.1,
though.

I downloaded the latest nightly of 6.2.2 and confirm that the Sirius

Thanks for the update!

Is it correct that there is no web interface yet (even though

That's good news. I was uncertain if the bug fix made in 6.5b1 to
disable the built-in WMA decoding made it to the 6.2.2 branch. I'll
update the web page accordingly.

As for the web interface, it should be appearing. What skin are you
using and did you delete the old Sirius directory before installing the
new version? On my 6.2.2 copy the web interface works with the default
skin, and on my 6.5b1 it works with the Fishbone skin so I would think
it'd work everywhere (although it might not look as good with some
skins).

Let me know.

streams, but when I didn't see anything appear I assumed Sirius wasn't
 sending it out.

 -Greg

Greg:

Slimserver probably handles this for you. Just be advised that Sirius
only sends out Artist/Song info when the song changes. So if you start
streaming in the middle of a song, there won't be any song info. Later
when the song changes, you'll see the info.

You can see this behavior through the Yahoo widget -- it'll say
Waiting for Data until it gets the info. Otherwise, if you have the
Enable Channel Data option selected, it will get the current
Artist/Song info from there.

BTW, the Sirius Yahoo Widget guy keeps updating his software. Moreover,
now he's also using an all channel feed from
http://www.farmingdaleweather.net/sirius/tracker.txt as his primary
provider. It's considerably faster than the itson.siriusbackstage.com
feed. He uses the itson.siriusbackstage.com feed as a backup.

You might want to check it out. You also might want to trade emails
with PhilF -- the guy who wrote the XM plugin. Apparently he was faced
with some of the same obstacles you've faced, and might be able to get
you on the fast track.

Looking forward to your next update!

They're already investing in developing the programming. And the

You should also be able to get the song info from the stream itself (in
real time). Most folks who are writing Sirius stream players are using
the actual stream for currently playing channel song updates and that
auxiliary website for channel browsing (seeing what's playing across
other channels). You may want to switch to using the actual stream for
song info. If/When you develop a channel browser or web interface,
knowing what's playing across channels (without hitting the play
button) will be come valuable.

You might want to download the Yahoo Widget Sirius Tuner.
http://www.widgetgallery.com/view.php?widget=38478

It's a fine non-slimserver example an effective, efficient
implementation of Sirius stream playback. It blows away what Sirius
offers to its subscribers.

If you can eventually come close to the feature set the Yahoo Widget
Sirius Tuner offers for Slimserver/Squeezebox, I think you've conquered
the task you set out for.

Actually if you even listen to the actual audio stream directly from

and digital artifacts. Satellite radio is far from Hi-fidelity. It's
more about variety. So you may want to reconsider your point.

I actually listen to Sirius to get ideas for new CD's to buy. They
have a decent rotation on most of their channels and best of all, all
the Artist/Album/Song information is displayed, so you can make a
mental note of what you like and then go out and buy the CD and load it
onto slimserver for the true Hi-fidelity experience.

The point of having a Slimserver plugin is to allow listening where you
ordinarily wouldn't have a Sirius hardware tuner, or wouldn't want to
pay for one. The online feed gives you portability and overall more
value for the monthly subscription you are paying for. I feel I'm
getting my money's worth by being able to stream Sirius from a
computer, because I'm not often in my car (where my Sirius hardware is)
and it seems foolish to be paying for something I wouldn't otherwise be
able to listen to often enough.

Its no secret.

Probably fine for listening in your car (or via a Sirius boombox),

Which is the initial design point.
The marketingdroids are singing the silly bull about 'digital' means
quality, but no one takes is seriously. It is seriously
compressed, bandwidth on satellite transponders is expensive.

A moving car is too noisey to have any serious Hi Fi.
The sound level of moving luxury cars is way over 60dBa,
It has to drown out any subtle audio artifacts.
60dB + 96dB from a RedBook audio is 156dB which is
way into pain and deafness. The threshold for
pain is about 130 dB, Aircraft carrier jet takeoff
is around 140dB.

Variety, convenience, are realistic goals.
Serious quality is not there.

So I get that currently, internet radio is lousy quality. But that can
be fixed, and presumably will, over time, as interest in it grows. More
servers, bigger pipes, the problems to solve are only investments, not
serious technological or architectural problems.

Sat. radio sounds like a significantly bigger problem (at least
economically). I presume it's going to stay lousy quality forever (or
at least long enough that I won't be able to hear the difference by the
time they fix it). If their main feed is to the satellite, that's
their business model. If they don't (and won't) care about the quality
of that, are they ever going to care about the quality for a few people
getting it over the internet?

So why go to the trouble of supplying it on an SB, if a lousy computer
speaker and an audio port from your PC would be too high quality for
the stream?

And pay money for it besides?

Or did I miss something?

It looks like today Sirius changed the URL on where they stream their
Internet channels from. They're no longer doing it in house--
probably in anticipation of Stern streams being offered online. As
such, I don't think the current plugin beta will stream properly since
it pulls from the old URL.

I'm pretty sure the authentication has stayed the same, so I should be
able to fix the plugin with no problem. I think I have it fixed,
however, I can't test it because I'm over the maximum logins for my
account today...

Also, my local copy now stores timestamped cookie and token
information. This should allow the plugin to reuse them when the
server is restarted (this way with all my restarts I shouldn't get
locked out so often). From here I'll look into the whole hashkey/token
expiration issue.

Hey Greg:

Great to hear you've got something started on playing Sirius. I think
you'll need to pass the WMA streams to AlienBBC in order to play them
across all Slim hardware. A forum member named Triode should be able

Also, in order for you to display song information from Sirius, you'll
need a real time feed for that. Most folks who have made online
players use the following realtime channel/song feed:

There's a new online player which is a yahoo widget which is very

Have you tried using mplayer and/or wmadec directly (on the command
line) with the URL your plugin generates for a particular Sirius
station? Put aside the internals of the Slimserver code, just see if
mplayer/wmadec (not to mention Windows Media Player itself) can play the
URL if you run them on the command line.

If so, then in theory you should be able to play it directly via the
Tune In web page and SB2/SB3 hardware should be able to connect directly
to the URL.

But without doing the above test you can't really know if the URL itself
is wrong or if there's something about the WMA stream that's confusing
the WMA decoding code in the SB2/SB3 firmware.

Sorry, I should have read a bit further; it sounds like you've done this
already and have a URL that's playable via the command line, though (for
whatever reason) not yet by the firmware-based WMA decoder in the
SB2/SB3. (I'm assuming the reason it works for Softsqueeze is that
Softsqueeze doesn't advertise itself as being able to decode WMA streams
directly, so the server decodes via wmadec [I think] and reencodes into
either a FLAC or an MP3 stream for Softsqueeze to play.)

Yeah. The stream plays fine when I paste the URL into Window's Media
Player. Over in the developer forum I posted some debug output that may
be useful. This post is at
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20814

I don't have much experience with how SlimServer handles audio streams so
I'm not sure what to do next. From the debugging out put it almost looks
as if SlimServer gets the stream, looks at it, decides that the hardware
decoder can play it, and then passes the URL over to the player to play.
The hardware player then seems to get nothing back. Am I reading the log
correctly?

If so, could it be that the URL is only playable once, and since the
server reads from it first before sending it to the player that it can't
be read again?

hardware player doesnt? Or maybe I'm doing something wrong... I'll
play with it some more. Hopefully my login wont get blocked due to so
 many logins..

I know nothing about about it, but AlienBBC uses a player called
Mplayer to play (I think) RealPlayer streams. I may be wrong, but I
think Slimserver can only play mp3 streams. I'm pretty sure than when
you tune into an online station, you have to find an mp3 stream.

Hey Kyle-
Thanks for the suggestion. It used to be the case that the hardware
only supported MP3 playback, however, not that long ago they added
native WMA (Windows Media) support to SB2's and SB3's via a firmware
upgrade. With this said, a SB2 or SB3 should be able to play it...

I'll continue to play with it, if I don't have any luck I'll post a
message in the developer forum asking for help.

 Hey Guys-
I'm going to look into what would be involved making a Sirius plugin.
It's more network-involved than my SuperDateTime plugin, but I'll
give it a shot. I give myself 50/50 chance of going ahead with it.

 -Greg

I love SuperDateTime! Please go for it. I'd kick in $10 too.

I bougth the SB3 with SqueezNetwork access to listen to commercial free
music, with world wide news and absolutely free of folks like Stern..
smile... and hey - I get it for free... what was your question..
smile... no seriously... I would not pay for SatRadio as I think it
can not match InternetRadio - and there is no need to listen to that
through the SB3. But I am sure many people would pay..
