mins or so. In fact it seems like the SB has a power shortage and
restarts/reboots up completely. Anybody know why this may be? It was
working fine with SS 6.5. And 6.5.1 is working fine via softsqueeze on
 the PC.

I have not altered any setting at all. It is connected wirelessly and I
 am using Windows (XP) OS.

Also I am a novice with both PCs and Slimserver!

 Many thanks!

ok, that eliminates a few possibilities...

My initial point is getting lost:

Electricity is an inefficient method of generating heat.

Better to turn off devices and use fossil fuels, bio-fuels for
heating.

The point about Nuclear power and Hydro-electric being completely clean
is incorrect when you consider the embodied energy in construction and
decommisioing. Both methods may make electricity more efficiently then
a power station (35% effieicent) but still better to turn off devices
and not consider it a form of heating

If the point was to generate heat, I'd agree with you.

But the point was, we keep these devices on for utility. They waste a
certain amount of power when on standby. The claim was made that this
isn't totally wasted, because it generates heat, so the waste is at
least partially offset by lowered other heat costs.

2007-01-21 Thread karma mechanic

Although my house has a number of devices which draw a small amount of
power when on standby, the effect of these is to add a little bit of
warmth to the house. If they weren't doing it then the heating system
would have to do it.

Ok, that only applies in the winter, but it does mean that 'wasted
power' is only really wasted in the summer.

I tried to measure the background consumption of the house, with
everything off except those things that are generally on all the time
(e.g cordless phones, network router, wireless burglar alarm system, a
number of devices that are on standby like the SB). Counting and
timing the fine graduations on the wheel in the meter unit suggested
that the house was using 150 watts. That seems a bit high for 24x7,
maybe the fridge or freezer kicked in for part of the time.

If you want to post data, I'd suggest using the Wiki, and I'd suggest
only posting data about gear that's still available for sale. I
wouldn't expect many contributions, though -- most people don't have
the means to measure real AC power usage
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_factor). Most folks probably don't
even have multimeters for measuring Volt-Amps, to say nothing of being
comfortable rigging a multimeter into a live AC power line, or the fact
that there are Slim Devices customers worldwide.

I wouldn't worry too much, though. Every piece of regular electronic
gear I've tested that was made in the last 4 years or so draws about 1
watt or less in off/standby mode (when off really means off,
unlike the Squeezebox, etc.) -- everything from my 30 watt computer
monitor to my 150 watt TV. IRBlaster should be great for such amps.

Older gear isn't as efficient. My 20-year-old stereo receiver from a
reputable company draws 7 watts in off/standby. My 6 year old computer
speakers have an automatic standby feature, but they draw about the
same power as the Squeezebox -- about 6 watts at normal listening
levels when on, and still about 4 watts when the speakers slip into
standby mode. This older gear begs for tools like AMPSwitch and
BottleRocket (I think).

If you are looking for a minimal power drain amplifier, get a Class-D
amplifier. They are essentially switch-mode power supplies with the
input signal as a reference and the output connected to a speaker.
Efficiencies run as high as 90%. These are relatively new and not many
are available, but more and more are coming out every year as engineers
get comfortable with the designs and the cost of the parts continues to
drop.

Class A amplifiers are usually very large, heavy, VERY expensive, and
waste huge amounts of power. Efficiency is no more than 50% maximum at
full volume and they are much less efficient at lower volume levels.

Class B and Class AB amps aren't too bad. They use little power at low
volume levels so efficiency runs in the 50-70% range. Almost all
commercial amps made in the last 30 years or so are Class B or AB.

If you want to minimize power consumption, get a low powered amp.

My current one is MUCH more powerful, yet doesn't have a heatsink. I

Class D amps were first applied to battery operated systems that needed
maximum efficieny to extend battery life. Think hearing aids and cell
phones. Subwoofers were next because the circuits available at the
time didn't allow fast enough sampling to operate over the entire audio

a heatsink, which is a large, expensive part.

Now there are full audio bandwidth class D power amps available (TI and

fewer analog amps as time passes.

(thread drift)
I've seen numbers that suggest that devices on standby use a
surprisingly high percentage of domestic power overall, just due to
their prevalence and the total time they are running. Recent
improvements seem to have driven the wattages much lower, but that's
countered by all those where 'standby' is the only 'off'.

Ideally such devices would be ideal candidates for a solar generator
with battery backup. The house could use grid power when anything
needed 'real' power, but that 'background level of usage that adds up
to so much overall would be taken care of.

Unfortunately systems aren't designed like that.

OK this is going to sound stupid, but my SB3 will often do what you are

to actually unplug the power cord from the back of the SB3, wait a few
seconds and plug it back in. After it reboots, reconnects, etc. all is
well. I know you've been doing diagnostics for days but did you try
 this?

I've often un-plugged the power, if I then re-connect the power and
connect to SqueezeNetwork before I connect to SlimServer I can listen
to Radio 1 no problem, if I then dis-connect from SqueezeNetwork and
connect to SlimServer I get the silent treament from SB2, if I then
connect back to SqueezeNetowrk I also get the silent treament from
their too !

The plot thickens, I've even tried upgrading to 6.5.1 the same
happens -

A pound of coal per week to run the SB3, or a pound of coal per hour to
run your big screen TV, or 5 gallons of gasoline per hour to power your
SUV down the road- it's all relative.

If you worry about saving energy/CO2/whatever, put your effort into the
things that pay off big, not the things that save 1 pound of coal per
week. Once the other wastes have been pared down to where burning a
pound of coal per week to run your squeezebox has become a big deal,
then start working on it.

Your server that drives the SB causes the burning of a lot more coal
than the SB3. Maybe you should shut the whole system off and not use
it. After all, why should the rest of us have to breathe the air
polluted by the coal burned to power YOUR audio system (or YOUR SUV, or
your whatever)?

No need to get hoity toity and flaunt your education. The ratio I
quoted was taken from a teacher's program for grade school students,
which required figuring how much coal is used by a standard
incandascent bulb iirc. Don't they also teach kids these days that no
effort is too small, everyone can make a difference etc.?

I'm not trying to get personal, but I've been to your site and seen the
bug magnifier you made w/ your son. Discovering bugs is great, but goes
hand in hand w/ conservationism. Honestly I would think having a way to

While it is true that every little bit helps, not every little bit is
significant, and it is wrong to teach that it is. If you focus people
of fixing the 5 watt Squeezebox power waste problem, they start
feeling more comfortable about driving a Hummer, because they feel they
have done their part.

The focus and effort needs to be placed where it will do the most good,
not where it will make people feel good about doing something/anything.
Fixing big problems takes more effort and the gratification isn't
instantaneous like unplugging your SB and getting a warm fuzzy feeling
that you are doing your part to save the world. Hard work and
sustained effort are the only things that will solve the real problems
and it will take a long time.

Being taught that every little bit helps is NOT helping fix the
problem.

That the spectrum analyzer shows a flatline would imply that it isnt the
audio output... I would suspect something like a firewall on your
server. If the SB can't connect to grab the music stream it will do
something like what you describe: the server -thinks- the SB is playing
but the SB knows better (but since the display comes from the server...
it can't say anything different).

Can you turn off your firewall for a bit and see if that fixes it?

2007-01-18 Thread tyler_durden

Well, there you go then- measure the power using the power meter
(probably innaccurate at such low power levels), then measure the DC
power by measuring current and calculating. The difference is the
power dissipated by the power supply.

The power of the whole system is so low that it won't have any
appreciable impact on your electric bill. If you pay $0.15/kW Hr, and
the SB3 takes 6W, with power on at all times it will cost you about
$0.15/week. That comes to $8 per year.

The reason you'd really want to measure the power is to do something
like select a right-size battery to operate it, which is why I
suggested measuring the current instead.

Hrrm.. is the server restarting perhaps?

I don't know how to tell on Windows... assuming a fast enough machine
and no slow-initializing-plugins it could be crashing and coming back
quickly so you don't notice the crash.

I would think the SB would black the display at some point when it lost
connection, but, then, my startup time is sorta slow since I have tons
of plugins to initialize...

Measuring the DC current into the SB would be a better way to measure
power. Power = V * A (for DC).

This can be done accurately with any multimeter that has a current

Not sounding too good then. Have you tried a hard reset of the box?

Press and hold 1 while cycling power will reprogam the xilinx in the

Press and hold add while cycling power will do a factory reset of the

If these don't work and you are feeling brave you could open up the box

and see if the wireless module has become loose inside.

 HTH

Can you elaborate on these instructions? I tried pressing 1 and the
power button but nothing seems to happen.

Thanks

Have you looked inside at the wireless module (IIRC its a distinct board
that is plugged in - you could even swap it with your good unit to see
if the fault follows the board.

One fall back, instead of buying a new unit, might be to get a cheap
Wireless repeater if you can find one...

I looked at the wireless card inside the SB and there is nothing loose.
I don't really want to mess aroud with my working SB unless absolutley
necessary. It looks like the card is caput, is there any possibility

I had a similar issue, perfectly working 2 box wireless setup suddenly
started having networking issues. Turned out to be network
interference, perhaps my neighbour got a wireless router or a new phone
in the same spectrum. Anyway, I changed the channel of the router and
things went back to normal and have worked since.

Log on to your router, there should be an option somewhere to pick a
channel. Try a different one and see what happens.

I have a related problem. Getting flac files to play from the server is
spotty and doesn't work at all from the player. .mp3 files work fine
but I've loaded 6.5 and 6.5.1 with no solution.

These are continuous files with .cue cutters.

I get the following error message:

Required binary was not found: [flac] -dcs --skip=$START$ --until=$END$
-- $FILE$ | [lame] --resample 44100 --silent -q $QUALITY$ --abr

Slimdevices is (sort of) trying to help me with no solution yet.

I'll post back if I hear anything productive.

That is only an option with 'Now Playing' :(

--

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. If I use Browse artists to
find an artist then an album and play it, after 30 secs the
screensaver (I use MusicInfo) cuts in, then if I use the left key I'm
taken back to the album I originally chose. This behavior changes I
think, when you've let the entire playlist finish, at which point I'm
taken to the top level menu. This is how I like it to work since if
the squeezebox has been dormant for a while I'm unlikely to want to go
back to the previous menu position.

2006-07-26 Thread mschiff

I have found that even an inexpensive headphone amp ($200) from Headroom
sounds considerably better than the headphone output on my SB3. Much
lower noise floor, and better sound as well. FWIW, the Headroom amp
also sounds better than the headphone output on my high end Yamaha
receiver when plugged into the SB3.

I should say that SD offered to help me troubleshoot the headphone jack
issues, but it wasn't that important to me since the optical out sound
to my receivers is fantastic and that is what I use 99% of the time.
When I use headphones, I connect my Total Bithead amp to the line out
connections on the SB3, and it sounds fantastic.

First question - whats the IP address you are getting on the SB? If its
169... then you don't have a useful address.

If its 192.168 then thats good... ping it from your server by
getting a windows command prompt and typing ping 192.xxx.xxx.xxx
(whatever the address is).

If you can't ping them (timeout response) then its not a slimserver
problem, its a networking one (probably firewall).

[slim] Re: SB2 Freeze after 6.2.2 Upgrade

2006-06-30 Thread MrP

FIXED!

The problem was solved after I emailed support, this was the suggested
fix and it worked -

It sounds like you may be running into a version conflict between your
old and new Slimservers.

Try the following:

* Uninstall Slimserver from the Add/Remove Programs box in Control
Panels

* Delete the install folder (default is C:\Program
Files\Slimserver)

* Reboot your computer

Next...

* Install Slimserver 6.2.2 from:

http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/SlimServer_v6.2.2/

* Next, using a spare network cable, please hard-wire your Squeezebox
to your router, and go through the connection process for ethernet
network from the remote control. (do not select Connect to a
wireless
network)

* Next it will ask you to hold the brightness button to update the
firmware. Once the firmware update is complete the Squeezebox will
reboot.

* Finally, disconnect the cable, and follow the wireless connection
process one more time.

Lastly...

* In Slimserver under Server Settings, make sure your music folder is
set correctly and click Change (if you're using iTunes, leave this
blank)

* Scroll down to Rescan Music Library, set it to Clear library and
rescan everything and click Rescan

Thanks to Daniel Evans at Slim for the above

2006-06-30 Thread matt24

Using 6.2.2 and F/W 48 my SB3 constantly seems to drop off, the music
stops and the display goes blank. When I try to wake it up it says
waking up slimserver but often doesnt connect. Sometimes if I ping
the SB3 from the slimserver it all wakes up and works again at the
first ping, but often not. I just have to wait. Very frustrating. I
never had this problem before upgrading from 6.2.1, the first version I
used.

My gut feeling it is not the SB but slimserver. Often when I shutdown
my PC I get an application error - slim.exe which I have to
acknowledge before windows will shut down.

Can anyone help? Tech support couldn't really shed any light.

[slim] Re: SB2 Dead - HELP!

2006-06-15 Thread Cessquill

Sorry for the delay...

After talks direct with Slimdevices technical support, they determined
that my machine was dead and needed replacing/repairing depending on
warranty.

Fortunately, the place I'd purchased from in the UK didn't dispatch my
unit until mid June '05, putting it still within its 1 year warranty.
I couriered the unit back, they determined first hand that the unit was
faulty and offered a replacement

UNFORTUNATELY, the Squeezebox 2 is no longer available, so my only
choice would be a SB3. Wasn't best pleased with this, since I much
prefer the SB2.

In addition to this, the SB3 is more expensive, albeit almost identical
but for casing, as far as I'm aware. Therefore, my only option to
resolve a faulty unit is to have it sent back, then pay more money for
a replacement unit that I don't really like so much in a colour
different to the old one. I'm either going to have to rearrange stuff
to fit it in, or sell it on, since right now I'm not best pleased.

Maybe it's just unfortunate, but it still gripes initially. One of the
deciding factors originally was the design and integration with an
existing setup. Bah!

It's a shame that an SB3 wouldn't fit in your setup as I think you'd
like it. However, if it has genuinely failed under warranty you really
don't have to pay extra now that the SB2 has been superceded with the
SB3. Your supplier should either offer you a free upgrade or your
money back. As a consumer in the UK you have rights, unfortunately a
lot of shops try to avoid their obligations to save money.

[slim] Re: SB2 Dead - HELP!

2006-06-06 Thread ob_kook

I have just experienced the exact same issue:

Left SB2 off while I was on a 2 week business trip (left it unplugged
actually), just went to plug it in and nothing. No screen, no
scrolling, no finding the network, cannot see it as a player in
Slimserver...just a small red light that can be seen through the
optical port in the back.

Has there been any resolve or update to the OP on this issue?

Peter

[slim] Re: SB2 and WPA with Draytek routers

2006-06-02 Thread urbanshepherd

Just got my SB3 today and had a few difficulties connecting to my
draytek 2600g. However

Upgraded firmware on it, and now works on WPA2 like a charm.

The above issues might have been solved, but thought I'dd add the post
in case (like me) you were trying to work out if it was compatible!

Anyone know the link to the router info page? Will add an info line
for this router there.

[slim] Re: SB2 Freeze after 6.2.2 Upgrade

2006-05-27 Thread MrP

It seems that if I use any fimrware after 28 I see this problem! SB2
plays one song then the display just freezes, can't do anything using
remote (other than turn it off) or via web interface.

[slim] Re: SB2 Dead - HELP!

2006-05-25 Thread Siduhe

Is it just the screen that is completely blank, or can you not connect
via the web interface and play music at all ?

First suggestion to rule out just screen blankage: Press the brightness
button on the remote a couple of times - it could be that SB is on and
functioning but the brightness has been set to 0.

If not, a few more details of your setup please ? OS / version
slimserver / how is it connected to your network ?

If you unplug and plug the power back in, does the SB default to
network set up or does nothing happen ?

What about a hard reset - (unplug and replug power supply all the while
holding down the Add button) but you will lose your settings with this.

I will try that when I get home, but other options not looking good.

Nothing going from that

Windows XP SP2, Slimserver running 6.2.2 - 7135 (although I think I was
running previous full release when it went down), it's connected via
wireless

Nothing. Not even the splash screen scrolling across.

Tried that just now - nothing. (also changed batteries in remote)

Not looking good here...

I agree, not good. Support[at]slimdevices.com may be a good idea.
