[slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
My Linksys WAG54GX2 wireless gateway router has started to overheat and power down when I connect more than one device to it now. Overheating routers is a known issue but I wondered if anyone else is having a similar problem in a music streaming context. I have a desktop PC, laptop PC music server and a SLIMP3 connected to the router by ethernet, with an SB3 Classic and Boom on wireless. Music is usually synched across all devices. Apparently the router can't handle the throughput and dies. I'm already on my second PSU as well. Had to play some real CDs last night! Thinking of moving to a new WAG120N if it's EOL for the existing unit. Any ideas / comments? Thanks GRC -- GRC -Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it ...- And if it matters ... Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
Seems odd it would be over heating under normal usage. I've only ever heard of regular over heating of routers when they have been over clocked or tweaked for boosted signal strength & coverage. But then this isn't something I follow very closely either. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77984 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
The router probably is just not up to moving so much data, so I'd recommend replacing it with a different model. I had a Netgear router that worked fine until I got Squeezeboxes. After that it would sometimes lock up, either when streaming FLAC or even when copying huge batches of FLACs from my laptop to my server. I put it down to design or hardware weaknesses that are never pushed to the limit with normal network use, but pushed past that limit by audio streaming. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77984 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
I overheated my WRT54GL when it when sitting on top of my computer. I moved it and it was ok. I use tomato software with it I have not tweaked the wifi ro the highest setting 80 -100mW is enough. The overheating did not start until i got more squeezeboxes :-) But a better location solved the problem. I'm redoing my network right now, as every port was full and I want to wire more stuff. I discovered an underrated item the switch, eventually I plan to have all wired stuff connected trough gigabit switches. So that internal traffic between wired things never have to go trough the routers internal switch (for now I use 2 ports on it). I also use static ip an all non mobile things as servers and wired players and desktop, so I figure that I will have most of the network intact even if the router goes down . Sorry for hijacking the tread with similar issues. My linksys is also getting old I think. What do you think about the "ASUS RT-N16" . Spec looks decent inbuilt gigabit switch fast N networking enough cpu to actually do the switching effortlessly 2 USB ports. And capable of running DD wrt firmware . I do love the tomato router firmware, but it's basically a one person operation so tomato have not got into N networking yet. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe'Primare and Dynadio speakers (including a pair of Contour 4 ) Bedroom/Office: Boom Kitchen: SB3 + powered Fostex PM0.4 Miscellaneous use: Radio (with battery) I use a Controller various ir-remotes and a Eee-PC with squeezeplay to control this Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77984 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
Well I took the easy route and sprang for a Linksys WAG120N. Like Ms Fonda said oh so many years ago - no pain, no gain. Wired performance worse - SLIMP3 keeps rebuffering (unless this is yet another 7.5 bug; note to self - do not install latest upgrades unless they fix a problem I actually experience). Wireless performance abysmal. My Boom outide on the terrace used to have a 40% signal - now down to 2% - yes TWO PERCENT. That sleek sexy design with high WAF and internal antennas leaves something to be desired from a performance perspective IMHO. So I'm now looking at Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. Wiki doesn't have much to say but the reviews are fairly favourable and one of its USPs is supposed to be high power 802.11g. Otherwise it's something like the Hawking Hi-Gain™ Wireless-G Range Extender (HWREG1) but it's more than twice the price of an access point / router. Again -any views? Can't believe I'm the only person with these problems and My Good Friend Search has not really helped. Any views? Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
I'm still using my reliable 3 year old Linksys WRT54GL. It just plain works. ;) I do think your troubles illuminate the very common issue of WiFi and general router performance issues we see in here. You are trying brand new, newer version hardware and sometimes are seeing worse performance than the older gear you are replacing. So when one reads "it's a brand new router so that can't be the issue" in here, the collective reasoning is "oh yeah?". -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77984 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
It seems many folk still rate the old Linksys WRT54GL, perhaps with third-party firmware (Tomato etc.). Does it have a strong wireless signal or could I still be in for a range expander which itself could melt under the streaming load? Is it best to partner it with a "proper" Linksys modem like the old AG241 gateway perhaps or will my freebee (with the ADSL account) modem be perfectly OK? Any views on the WRT54GL versus Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 which is supposed to have a really good wireless range? This is the potentially weak link in the entire Squeezebox network "-chez moi-" so I'm keen to get it right before I add any more wireless clients. Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
I am using a d-link DIR-655 as a router/wlan Access Point. I am living in an old house which I have renovated and redone the wiring. I began with the livingroom and unfortunately back then I didn't think of putting a LAN cable there :-( Anyway when I bought my Duet I suddenly needed an Access Point. Did a bit of research and bought the DIR-655. It works fine and I have signal everywhere in the house. And now to the point Normally with all my electronics I would load new firmware without any second thought. But my router has become the exception. When I searched for firmware I found threads after threads about all sorts of problems, so in the end I left it untouched as it works as it is. But looking at the various forums I found that the same applies to all (?) the other brands. For now I am happy but fearing the day wen my router stops working. At the moment it looks to me that a router supported by Tomat and dd-wrt are the way forward. Then you have that option if the original firmware is bad. -- slate Main: Duet -> Beresford Caiman -> Carver A-500x -> B&W 704 Office: Duet -> Technics SU-V50 -> Stax SR84 Pro Server: Zotac IONITX-A, 4 GB, 1 TB WD EADS, Win7 w. 7.6 (SQLite) slate's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30502 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77984 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I don't know about the Buffalo, but WRT54GL is stable and I've been using it to broadcast WLAN from one building to another, maybe 50 meters through one glass window and a concrete wall. It took a little tweaking, but then I had a fairly stable 54 mbps link, which occasionally dropped to 48 or even 36 once in a blue moon, but not lower unless I started monkeying around with the setup. -- Soulkeeper Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77984 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Router overheating with multiple devices?
Well today I installed a new Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router to replace the Linksys WAG120N with cr*p wireless performance. Or rather - the Buffalo kind of installed itself - didn't use installation CD or anything. Plugged my freebie Thomson SpeedTouch modem in, connected the router, and about 3 minutes later I was back online. Not even PPPoE login information required - spooky! So far, after about 6 hours continuous use, not a single problem. And no ALAC crashes with Server 7.5.1 either! Ambient temperature here in Portugal is around 25 degrees at the moment - the modem is warm but not the router. Wireless signal strength (according to SB Server Information) after the swap has improved from 33% to 58% on the Boom outside, and from 44% to 71% for the SB3 Classic in the lounge. Result! Tomorrow I may investigate Tomato firmware, but the old engineer in me keeps saying "if it ain't broke ..." So a thumbs up for Buffalo then.
