I am on the £9.95/month sub and just cashed in my first 12 free tracks
credits. I bought a 24 track album for £8.95 expecting to have to pay
for 12 tracksnope Napster will have none of that and said that my 12
free tracks equated to £8.95 and so nothing else to pay. Bargain I would
say. So if you are careful what you buy you can get a lot of music for
your free credits. Well done Napster!!

In terms of how reliable the Napster service is via Squeezebox? Very
happy. I also find the web interface over Firefox very good to use for
local PC playback - e.g. I can use it at work.

I wish that the Napster Library (i.e. the repository of tracks you've
played or saved to your library) still supported Album view (you can now
only view by track or artist) but that's my only minor niggle.

Re: Napster UK Now 5

2009-10-16 Thread mmca22gr

In truth, I have been using Napster with SB for around 8 months. I have
had some rebuffering problems, but that was with mainly with my SliMP3
and a Mains ethernet kit, so not too concerned. Actually some of the
posts on the Napster boards are very critical, but for £5, I think their
expectations are too high - It's less than minimum wage! FFS, if you
were on the dole, you might even sign up!

FOr £60 a year including 60 downloaded DRM free tracks, plus the
ability to stream to any/all your squeezeboxen - then I would not be too
concerned about how good the Customer Service Dept are. In fact for that
price, I would expect them to be farmed out to the cheapest place that
Napster can put them.

Actually I'm surprised that someone like Virgin have not bought them
out, or tried to replicate - Take out our superfast 50MB broadband and
stream any 8m tracks for free!

The way this streaming media will pan out is that we will go back to
paying per MB of usage. If people think that they can use BBC iPlayer
all day or downlad movies from Apple TV, without eventually having to
'pay the ferryman' will be in for a shock!

To get back to you original question... I though it was a good enough
service to pay £10 a year for, so I am very happy that I can get the
same service for £5. In fact, local.bin, PM me your address and I will
send you a crisp BoE £10 note and you can have a free 2 months - I'll
just pretend that they have not reduced the price until December!

Am I the only Squeezebox owner who thinks that £5 to stream any of 8m
tracks to your player is a no-brainer?

Re: Napster UK Now 5

Thanks for all your input.

I'm struggling with the Napster / Spotify decision, rather than the £5
decision really.

There is no iphone client for Napster, but there is great Slimserver
support, while the opposite is true for Spotify :-/

Of course if the service is good I'll never need support, but with
Spotify I can cancel the service by opting out in my account and their
service is great.

You have to go via customer services with Napster and I've heard
varying reports about that service.

If the service is indeed good, then £5 is a bargain :)

Its also a pity that my music seems to be on Spotify but only in the US
Napster site...

Have any of you tried m.napster.com site? does it also work well?

Thanks again.

It's even worse than that - there used to be an album view, but it was
removed with the last big software update. Huge pushback from UK users
but apparently driven by two things - making it consistent with the US
service and most of their feedback from focus groups was that people
listen to tracks not albums. Vinyl vs ipod gen, I guess, but no idea
why they can't just add it back.

Napster have developed an iphone streaming app (as opposed to
m.napster.com which is download only) and are in the process of
negotiating the various rights necessary to release it. I've never had
any problems with Napster support but to be fair I've never had to do
more than use them to convert my account between service levels.

Spotify support in Squeezecenter is a regular enhancement request, and
developers have said they would like to add it. However, the current
released Spotify API isn't up to the job.

I 'm almost certain that I emailed then to cancel my last subscription
with no fuss.

I think Spotify wil be dead in a year and Naspter might limp along for
another year after that. The money in the music industry is to be made
in touring, but that is a small % of total music sales.

How can the record industry go from charging me £10 for Hendrix-Axis
Bols As Love on Vinyl to £12 on CD to £5 to download to £5/8million
(0.06p) per month to listen to it.

I believe that music will become low bandwidth fodder as a free addon
to your ISP. The record companies will survive by getting us to buy
digitally remastered, top notch, super duper, MP3 files of the Albums I
have on record, tape, CD etc. for yet more money. I'll end up paying 4
times for the same record.

Excuse the diversion ;-)

For £5.00 I'm not going to complain too much, I use it for background
music and as a sort of try before I buy on CD. Gives me the option of
listening to many Artists that I would not have even considered. It
great for the kids - having the latest chart music without any effort on
my part.

I have previously cancelled my Napster subscription, and after a few
minutes wait on the telephone the subscription was cancelled with a
reference number issued, all without any fuss. I also recently called
them when I received a new debit card, but their system kept rejecting
the new info. They did really try very hard to make my new card work but
I have very little patience so just used another card.

Napster UK Now 5

2009-10-06 Thread KMorgan

I've only just become aware of this so I thought I'd pass it on.
Probably common knowledge and I'm way behind.

Napster Unlimited streaming service is now £5 per month, and includes 5
free mp3 downloads per month. I only became aware of this when I was
informed that my £9.95 sub would entitle me to 12 free mp3 downloads
p/month.

Seems like a reasonable deal. I'd probably still change to a full
Spotify sub if it was squeeze-integrated. Napster is 128kbps WMA vs.
Spotify's 320kbps Ogg.
