Not true IMO. You can get very nice brushed steel cases for the Raspi.
Besides, the Chromecasts are not really aesthetically pleasing. There's
supposed to be hidden away. You can achieve the same with a Raspi + Vesa
mount.

As for pricing: Yeah, the Chromecasts are a little cheaper. But they
offer less functionality. And you're only getting what Google wants.
They tell you it's an open ecosystem but that couldn't be farther from
the truth. Selected parts are open. Other parts force you to pay Google
with your personal data. Fact is, the Raspi universe is way more open.

Just ordered one for testing. Since the Google Play Music plugin
unfortunately doesn't work anymore and no-one is developing it further,
maybe I'll use this as a workaround.

New setup:

I also ordered one. Like the fact that it comes with analogue and spdif
output. Main disadvantage over LMS/Squeezelite: no central control app.
You use an app for radio, one for Streaming music (Play Music, Spotify,
Qobuz apparently coming soon) etc.
Also, no idea what kind of DAC they use, and they don't have a compact
"Amp" version like the one I use in the cellar and bedroom (Pi +
HiFiBerry Amp). We'll see how well it works.

True - the Rocki is rubbish as a stand-alone player. It does work well
as a squeezelite player with upnpbridge.

Good to know about the Rocki. Honestly, I am not interested in the
Chromecast as a replacement for the squeezebox hardware but rather as a
way to maintain access to the music services. We are blessed to have
such a talented community developing a number of alternatives for DIY
and easy to use replacements for squeezebox players. I use two hacked
pogoplugs and Ipeng Playback as players in addition to my hardware
squeezeboxes but when mysqueezebox.com goes away I will be disappointed
as I love Slacker and Pandora in addition to Triode's Spotify app that I
suppose is no longer supported in his absence. That is why I am
interested in the Chromecast, just to maintain access to the music
services I love when mysqueezebox.com goes away.

I only have Deezer - it works fine on squeezeboxes but is useless on the
Rocki as a native app. Have to admit I'm not a great fan of the
smartphone control apps for any of these devices - much prefer to use my

I am going to get one as well. If someone could develop a plugin that
would turn these Chromecasts into Squeezebox playback devices (like
Ipeng playback does with airplay devices) then we would be good to
continue to use LMS for playback of our local music and any other
functioning music services and the Google system for everything else. I
am excited for this at this pricepoint but pray it doesn't wind up on
Googles trash heap when they lose interest along with the Nexus Q,
Google TV etc.

Well, Squeeze Ctrl on Android already supports Chromecast sticks--but
all it does is showing a "now playing" screen on your TV. I'm pretty
shure that more is possible.

I don't think, Chromecast will be abandoned that soon, the first gen was
a big hit. Oh, and the new Nexus Player is an Android TV box that can
act as a Squeezebox by installing SqueezePlayer.

The combo analog/digital jack has been around for several years. Had a

one. Here's a picture of a TOSLINK-to-mini adapter:

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-01 Thread CommanderROR

Actually, the Squeezebox does not need to be replaced at all, but the
lacklustre support for streaming services is a big problem. Ickstream
MIGHT be able to remedy this, but they seem to be having a hard time
making significant progress, probably because their team is too small,
and they are not making money out of the project.

LMS Plugins CAN work great, look at Qobuz which is pretty tip-top right
now thanks to Michaels work, but most services are lagging far behind,
especially if the maintainer goes missing (like Triode for Spotify) or
there is no open API (Google Play Music).

I'm constantly torn, between investing more into Squeezelite based
Players, and abandoning the system entirely. Chromecast Audio is nice
enough I guess, but the handling will likely never be as neat as the LMS
Server/Client system or the Sonos etc. systems. Also, the versatility
(Pi + DAC/Digi/Amp) is pretty much unique. Only Sonos can rival it, but
their prices are just insane.

Well, my Chromecast Audio should be here in about 2 weeks (Google hates
everybody outside the US apparently) and then I'll take a closer look.

I ordered one last week fully expecting to wait a long time only to get
an email telling me it is shipping today, I think it will go a long way
to simplifying audio - I have 6 SBs linked to a Pi & the complexity in
keeping it all going, sync-ing, plug-ins has been tedious - especially
when the BBC changes went through a while back.

If this is as simple as the 1st gen device (I have one) then I see this
being a winner, especially when you can sync them. No need for plug-ins,
just use one of the supported music apps and cast - even my family
should be able to manage that (they don't get the whole SB concept).

I got mine today. It sounds pretty to good to my old ears. I like
being able to use the Spotify app directly to control playback as I
really enjoy their new(ish) discovery section that was not accessible on
Triode's plugin. It is comforting for me to know that when
mysqueezebox.com goes away I will easily be able to continue listening
to most of the music services I enjoy now. I plan on experimenting with
the UPnPBridge plugin to see if it will allow LMS to play my local music
to it. Right now I am not sure what is the best way to accomplish that
but of course the squeezebox will continue to perform that duty just
fine.

I picked a Chromecast Audio up at Best Buy today. Within minutes I had
it streaming Spotify. With a bit of searching I found the Localcast app
on the Android store and installed it. I then enabled the DLNA server
capability of LMS and a few minutes later I was streaming from my
network music library.

I have the Chromecast connected to my Burson DAC/amp using a digital
optical cable, right next to my Touch connected via USB. Initial
comparison says the Chromecast sounds pretty similar but further time is
needed to know for sure. It certainly doesn't sound bad.

A while back I borrowed a similar cast-enabled DLNA device called Beep
from my son and was able to "turn it into a Squeezebox" using
squeeze2upnp. It worked just like a Squeezebox. Able to control it from
any Squeezbox controller or app. The Beep had fairly poor sound quality
so I didn't pursue it any further.

I expect to be able to do the same squeeze2upnp thing with the
Chromecast but won't have time to experiment until Saturday. I can
report back if others are interested.

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-09 Thread CommanderROR

That's actually a perfect plan!!!

I just set up Squeeze2Upnp, and it works perfectly with my AMP, meaning
I son't need the Pi in the lounge anymore...if it works with the
Chromecast Audio as well, then that means I can keep LMS, but still use
the Chromecast devices to stream from LMS (webradio and Qobuz for
example) and still cast from Chrome or Android with apps like "Play
Music". This is pretty much
perfect!
The Squeeze2Upnp Plugin was something I always ignored so far since I
saw little advantage in using it, now I know better. I handles HighRes
streams from Qobuz fine btw., so no trouble there either.

Is the Chromecast Audio fully compatible with DLNA! Or does it need some
workarounds or anything?

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

Chromecast Audio has a nice price, presumably because Google is setting
the price based on a mixed calculation (you don't just generate revenue
by purchasing the hardware, but also by using more Google services).

IMO, the way to exploit the cheap hardware is by hacking it. Google
Cast's strength is it's polish and ease-of-use. But I presume it lacks
many of the advanced features I like about the Squeeze ecosystem.

Does the Chromecast Audio, when used in conjunction with Squeeze2Upnp,
support (i) tight synchronization, (ii) ReplayGain, (iii) gapless
playback, etc.? If it doesn't, I don't find the device all that
exciting.

Although, you know what would be really cool? Squeezelite running on a
rooted Chromecast Audio!

Unlikely since users have not been able to root existing Chromecasts
with recent firmware. It seems only Chromecast with old not-upadted

AFAICT Chromecast doe not run Linux they run a version of ChromeOS so
there is a no SDK. This make would make it difficult to port
Squeezelite. The other choice would require somebody to port Linux to
Chromecast hardware - another non trivial task when there is no
documentation on the h/w.

If Chromecast could be rooted or have Linux ported onto it - it would
have been done already for the existing Chromecast.

I don't think Google will support Chromecast Audo as a DLNA renderer as
it is not part of the architecture - audio shoudl be cast by a DLNA
renderer running on an Android system/tv/phone or similar.

As a test last year - I've ported Squeezelite as a Chrome Native Client
(i.e. runs natively under Chrome) which can then cast audio easily but
Chrome only supports 48/44.1 16bit.

wrt Chromecast capabilities - IIRC Google said in a recent PR they hoped
to do synced audio from multiple chromecasts next year.

I believe the most realistic route would not be to modify the
Chromecast, but to teach LMS (or rather a LMS Plugin) the Cast Protocol.
Pretty much like BubbleUpnp that can send data to pretty much
everything, including Chromecast devices. Problem is, that's on Android,
no idea how "open" the Cast protocol is, and whether it can be applied
in a useful form from LMS...

The Chrome browser can also cast and that is why I tested porting a
Squeezelite player as a Chrome Native native client (i.e. it runs within
a Chrome web page tab and same cleint runs on Windows, OSX and Linux -
also on Chromebook) - the downside was that the Chrome Audio is limited
to 44.1/48.

Google "cast" docs can be found here but they are mainly centered around
sending audio to a Google Chromecast.
https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/reference/

Personally I think Chromecast Audio is dead end for LMS - too much
reverse engineering is needed to get a basic solution which can be
undone at a stroke by Google. A Pi packaged with a DAC running
PicoPlayer is a more maintainable long term solution but it is not a
ready neat package for non technical end users.

You're probably right, I saw a project on Github that is apparently

Well anyway, it can't hurt to look into it, if it turns out to be
impossible (which is likely), then so be it... ;)

The charm of Chromecast is, that you could use it for LMS and also with
various streaming apps on Chrome/Android/iOS. 2in1 basically... :D

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-09 Thread markbrauer

I'm new to this "casting" stuff as of yesterday but I'm learning fast.

As I reported earlier, I have experimented running cast capable apps,
Spotify and LocalCast, with good success. But then I noticed that my
Android phone has an overall casting control. I turned it on and the
cast icon appears in the notification area at the top of the screen.
Figuring I had nothing to loose I fired up Squeeze Player and
Orangesqueeze, selected my phone as the player, and sure enough my LMS
library is available for casting and control. Just like a "real"
Squeezebox. And the Triode Spotify app works too.

It seems that the music is actually being cast from the Squeeze Player
app on the phone and not from LMS running on my network. I close
OrangeSqueeze and the music continues. I turn off Squeeze Player and the
music stops. Turn it back on and it starts again. If I lose WiFi on the
phone the music stops. So it's definitely being channeled through the
phone. With the LocalCast app, once you start the stream from the phone
you can shut down the app, leave WiFi coverage, or shut the phone off
and the music keeps streaming from the network server.

I have no idea how routing the data through the phone affects the bit
rate delivered to the DAC . Those with knowledge of the inner workings
of the Squeezebox system may be able to shed light on this. All I can
say is that playing music this way, the sound quality of the digital-out
of the Chromecast seems on par with the digital-out of the Touch.

My phone is a Nexus 5 that just updated to Android 6. I installed the
Google Cast app to set up the Chromecast and I suspect that is where the
phone's seemingly innate casting ability came from. Not sure if all
Androids have this capability.

I still intend to experiment with squeeze2upnp to get the Chromecast to
be even more like a "real" Squeezebox.

I have tested my Chromecast Audio and it works really well - it seems
most people here are aiming to use this within their SB ecosystem, I'd
like to think that the CA can replace the whole thing making it all a
lot easier to use. Once the devices can be sync'd then I see no reason
to try & shoehorn the cast devices into LMS, other than for the sake of
trying it out.

I've invested a lot of time, money and love into my LMS/SB environment

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-10 Thread CommanderROR

@cottingham

I think there are several reasons to use LMS with Chromecast, instead of
just Chromecast alone. First one is all about ease-of-use. LMS lets us
control everything from within a single app. This is very
straightforward and comfortable. If I want to listen to a track on
Qobuz, then I just select it and hit Play, if I want to change over to
webradio, no big deal. On Chromecast I have to open the app, connect it
to the CC I want to use, wait for it to connect, then start streaming.
If I want to change from Streaming to Radio, then I have to open another
app, connect to CC etc. Much more hassle. If I want to use local music,
then it's a different app again.
Changing Players, Syncing them etc is also less intuitive than on LMS,
at least at the moment.
Another thing is "Start Playing" that I love on LMS/PiCorePlayer. I just
turn on the power on my Player, and the music starts. No need to use my
Smartphone at all.

Then there is Legacy support and Compatibility. We've all invested into
this Ecosystem already. With Chromecast Audio, I could augment that,
adding it in places where I already have active speakers. The places
where I have passive speakers are better served with the
RaspberryPi/Hifiberry Amp combination, as this is the slimmest system.
Only one power lead, no fuss, no hassle, and Volume Control right from
my LMS Control app. With Chromecast Audio I'd have to buy an Amp,
connect the CC to it, then I've got more devices, more cables, less
ease-of-use.

Well, that's my take on the affair. Of course, if Google gets serious
about Music Streaming and starts opying Sonos (Central Control app with
Plugins, devices for different puropses) then things might look
different. Time will tell!

AFAIK, the SiriusXM app on Android does not support Chromecast natively
(yet), so I'm pretty sure, the iOS app doesn't either. But according to
the Google Forums, you can open the SiriusXM stream in Chrome on your

to a thin client, so missing most of Linux user space tools and

As I see it - there are two main scenarios where Chromecast Audio can be
used with LMS. How it is set up will probably depend on whether the
user consider LMS to be the dominant or secondary audio source and/or
whether the speakers being used will be shared by LMS and other audio
source (e.g. cast, bluetooth)

1. Attached to speakers directly or through an AMP (e.g. digital in or
line in). Audio will come from Android system - LMS audio would need to
use DLNA renderer on Android system.
2. Attached to the system running LMS connected to a analog line in
(analog) or digital in and use WAVIN to send cast audio stream through
LMS to SB players.

The Google Chromecast app on my Android (also available for iOS), when
activated, seems to cast any and all audio whether played from an app or
in the browser. If video is involved it is displayed on the phone. It
works that way with the YouTube app, and with Vevo in the browser. Also
works with videos on cnet. Those with Apple devices should be able to
confirm how it works in that environment.

I'm not sure how much I will be relying on the Chromecast in my music
listening. I was pretty excited to get mine a few days ago and after
playing with it the last few days I much prefer the centralization and
organization of the squeezebox system. I switch between my radio
favorites, slacker favorites, local music and spotify quite frequently
during the course of a day (I work from home with music on constantly)
and while doable on the Chromecast it is not as elegant as using Ipeng
to control my squeezebox. Also, I have yet to find a solution for local
music playback (with IOS) that is acceptable. Right now the only real
way I have seen is with Plex and the lack of gapless playback is not
acceptable to me. It seems like right now Android users have an
advantage if using the method that Markbrauer described in post #39 but
for IOS users things are pretty clunky. I am thankful to have a cheap
way to add music services to my various listening areas but will stick
with Squeezebox for everything else.

An update as of Saturday morning.

I did activate squeeze2upnp and indeed, as CommanderROR's research
predicted, the Chromecast is not found as a DLNA device. So, at least
for now, the dream of an inexpensive "real" Squeezebox is not
happening.

Casting from separate Android apps is very unsatisfying. Really makes
one miss the unified interface the Squeezebox system provides.

Most promising is using Squeeze Player to cast from a phone (post #39).
But doing this last night took my phone battery from near-fully-charged
to nearly-dead in about two hours. Never had a phone lose charge so
fast. Evidently casting takes juice! But, if one was willing to get a
cheap cast-capable Android (locally MetroPCS offers a no contract LG
Leon LTE running 5.0 Lollipop for $29) and dedicate it to music player
duties, one could put together an "almost-a-real-Squeezebox" device.
Lets see - $35 for the Chromecast Audio - $29 for the phone - Squeeze
Player is free - that's $64 total. Both the phone and Chromecast would
need constant power, but the so does a Touch. Use another phone as
controller, or any other Squeezebox control. Could work.

What attracted me to the Chromecast Audio is the digital output and
ability to handle hi-res files - just like my Touch. And it does match
the outstanding performance of the Touch through my DAC/amp. I tried the
similar Beep device (thisisbeep.com - now defunct) in the past. Beep did
work with upnpbridge, but the analog output from the built-in DAC was
not even close to the Touch. The Rocki is also analog only. According to
the one review I found that mentioned sound quality, the Rocki's analog
output was characterized as "better than an iPhone" but "not up to
audiophile standards" and I couldn't find anything documenting it's
bit-rate capabilities.

I guess that makes me an audiophile.

Maybe if they had actually built the $89 digital output Rocki...

My ears are shot, so I can't really detect much difference! Pity the
Rocki 2 hasn't appeared.

The best device I've tried is a Sonos - very versatile as a

Since you have tried many devices - there are a number of rocki like
products (Neet airstream, digifunk ..) - AFAICT one has digital out -
Soundmate Wm201 http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00SKW4664?psc=1 or the real

I received mine just now. Power consumption is pretty low, between 1w
and 1.5w.
Controlling it is a bit different than on LMS of course, but I already
knew that.
There is a setting called "High Dynamic Range" which I guess means "turn
off normalisation...it's a bit worrying that Range Compression is turned
on by default...

Apart from that there is little to say so early on. I just plugged it in
and it works. I also got 90 Days Play Music for free, which is cool. I'm
using the analogue out right now, because the Optical port is currently
occupied by a Pi... 😉

Will let you know more about it once I test more.

One HUGE plus for Chromecast Audio: Google Play Music support. I really
hope we'll get this via ickstream or some other means eventually. I
really love Qobuz for their wonderful, lossless audio quality, but Play
Music is such a joy to use. Useful Playlists, dynamic radio stations
that stay within the selected genre etc... This is the way Music
Streaming SHOULD work IMHO!

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-13 Thread CommanderROR

My preliminary verdict:

The Chromecast Audio is a wonderful piece of hardware. It could benefit
from some better powersaving (power in idle is the same as when
streaming...) but it's not much either way, so no big worries. Sound
quality seems fine, but I haven't done any in-depth testing yet. It
seems to have no trouble with 24/192 content from Qobuz (playing via
Analogue Out, so using the built-in DAC). Connection seems stable, but I
did not do any extensive testing yet.
It's basically like a Raspberry Pi with HiFiBerry DAC and Digi, all in
one with a neat little case (that thing is tiny!!!) and PSU for much
less money than the Pi with accessories.

What really makes this less than optimal for me though, is the fact that
it heavily relies on my Phone. I've currently got my LMS/Picoreplayer
system set up to just start playing the last selected Playlist or Radio
Station when I turn it on. So, basically I cut power, then it's off, I
turn on the power, then it's on and continues where it left off.
With the Chromecast, there is no button to press on the device to pause
or stop, and there is no option to resume (at the moment). So, as soon
as I turned off the music or left the WiFi, next time I have to take out
my phone, navigate to the app, wait for the Chromecase Icon to show up,
tap it, select my Chromecast, tapt Connect, wait for it to connect, then
select what I want to play. That's a huge amount of stuff that I don't
really want to handle every time I start or stop music.
I hope Google implements some kind of "Pause and Resume" function so
that the CC picks up the last station or PL it was Playing when it goes
back online. However, for that to work it needs to store that info
somewhere, so it would need a "Server" which is does not have, so no
idea how that could work.

Really, the LMS infrastructure is way superior to this, sadly support
for Streaming Services isn't good, and likely won't get better. That's
why it would be perfect, if we could use the CC in conjunction with LMS,
but that is probably as unlikely to happen as official Play Music
Support for LMS... :(

Then, consider the Rocki (see the latest blog update on developments:

2 immediate pros: it can work as a squeezeplayer via the upnpbridge

Google made sure t have the major players onboard, and I think pretty

Yes, the Rocki software is awful - they seem to be addressing that.
Streaming is a case of 'swings & roundabouts' - all the standard
interfaces have their quirks (eg. Deezer Favorite Albums - no way to
sort by genre), especially on LMS. But the smartphone apps are also
fiddly to use).

I'm used the classic squeezeplay interface - simple to use, and
consistent across all the later devices.

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-16 Thread bpa

This post is long and a more of a brain dump to help others think about
and discuss the issue.

I've done a bit of investigation into Chromecast to see what sort of
solution is possible and whether it would be usable.

As background I've had an original Chromecast for a few years and I've
ordered a Chromecast Audio.

As I see it Chromecast Audio is interesting to LMS users because for non
technical users it is a low cost standalone piece of hardware that can
provide over wifi/ethernet - audio out at hires both digital and
analogue, unlike the alternatives such as Raspberry Pi with Additional
DAC and downloaded s/w which need "assembly".

Making use of Chromecast Audio with LMS can be done in two ways
1. change Chromecast Audio device into a Squeezelite type player - this
would require rewriting the device software i.e. rooting it.
2. enable LMS to send compatible audio to standard Chromecast.

Early Chromecast devices could be be rooted but current ones cannot.
Since Google have taken steps to prevent rooting it is not a good long
term approach. So putting a version of Squeezelite onto Chromecast is
not practical - it doesn't matter what OS is running.

Enabling LMS to send Chromecast compatible streams is a better solution
for many reason
- since there are other "cast players" - it seems to be feasible
- Google is unlikely to take steps to stop it as the "cast players" are
using documented interfaces
- the approach will work with all Chromecast enable devices not just
Audio i.e. Gen 1 & 2 Chromecast for TV, Chromecast enabled TVs (e.g.
Sony) and speakers (e.g. Sony & LG Flow)

I'm not sure if anybody has tested the suggested "cast player" noted in
earlier posts but they are written in Javascript and use node.js and
npm. To get them going required loading up a lot of packages and even
then some didn't work as they were out of date (i.e. API used had been
deprecated). I don't believe these packages and Node.js are a good basis
for a LMS solution. To get to understand Chromecast underpinnings -
I've played around with PyChromecast - a Python based "cast player" and
it was easier to set up.

The message format used by Chromecast is Google Protocol Buffers (aka
Protobuf) which serializes structured data. To help encode/decode
messages there is a special Protobuf compiler which supports C++, Java
and Python. Other languages such as Perl may be supported by 3rd parties
but Perl work stopped in 2011 and it is not clear if the Perl support is
complete.

A Chromecast player is basically a browser which runs a single page.
Like a browser page it has background, text and multimedia elements such
as video or audio. The Chromecast application is in two parts a Cast
Sender and a Cast Receiver. A Cast Receiver is an application created
using HTML, Javascript and CSS. It is loaded onto a Cast device (for
example, a Chromecast) through a URL that is accessible over the network
to which the Cast device is connected. There is a basic Default Receiver
which can play a media item and show text. Custom Receiver apps can be
defined (e.g. fancy background , DRM) but they must be registered with
Google and the Custom Receiver app is loaded from a specific server.
Since receivers are loaded from Specific servers - it seems the
Chromecast will only work if connected to Internet. All media played or
shown by a Chromecast device is obtained from a server using http.

A command line (i.e. not using Android or Chrome) Cast Sender
application can tell a Chromecast device to load a specific Receiver
application and then it will interact with the receiver to play media
and change what is displayed. For basic use with LMS on a Chromecast
Audio device the Default Receiver app is sufficient and so there is no
need to develop a Custom Receiver app.

The Cast Sender Application can tell the Cast Receiver told to play an
URL for a file or an audio stream with relevant cover art and title text
and if compatible Receiver will play it without any further interaction
with the Sender - just requesting data from a HTTP server. This is a bit
like using Local Player which plays the file directly rather askign for
LMS to send the files.

I don't think this mode is suitable for use with LMS as there are
unsupported formats (e.g. WMA) and probably other issues. It seems that
LMS support Sender will have to provide a http server and request an
appropriate HTTP stream from LMS and tell Receiver to play it augmented
by metadata (artwork,Track info, Artist etc). It is possible the
current uPNP support in LMS might help but only if the Protobuf Perl
support is adequate - otherwise providing a Sender app written in C++ or
Python interacting with LMS could prove to be a challenging mash-up.

As I see it now, more investigation is needed but it is on the LMS side
- mainly determining how to create the http stream that the Chromecast
device will play and how to interact with LMS as a SB player.

Very interesting. I've been giving some thought to what I will switch
to when the SB is no longer viable and this device is high on my list.
My current LMS usage consists of:
- Spotify (using Triode's plugin)
- Local music (just a small library of things not on Spotify)
- Tunein
- Multi player sync is very important to me.

If I replaced all my players with Chromecast Audio devices, I'm not sure
why I'd want to continue using LMS at all. What are the key features
that would make me want to keep LMS?

If you replaced all your SB players - I agree it makes no sense.

This thread started by user hypothesising about using the Chrombebix
hardware and replacing the s/w - besides not being possible at the
moment some very odd ideas were suggested (put LMS on Chromecast !!) so
I wanted to ground the thread into reaility about what could be
achieved.

The only use case I can see is where a user has a number of SB players
but say wants some speakers in Kitchen ( but has no spare SB player).
The Kitchen speakers will also be used by partner, kids etc from their
devices. Bluetooth speakers have quality issues as well as connectivity.
So using Chromecast Audio - the Kitchen speakers can be used to play LMS
or audio from other sources such as phones or tablets.

I'm curious, do you think your solution would have reliable sync?
Either between chromecast players or between heterogenous players? I'm
anxious to see how well the future sync feature from Google works.

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-16 Thread CommanderROR

@bpa
Thanks for your analysis. I think "Casting" from LMS to Chromecast Audio
is the only thing that makes sense. The "point" of it would be
a) Having cheap, compact and high-quality SB Hardware
b) Having a solution for streaming services that LMS does not fully
support (like Google Music)

About the advantages of LMS ovet CC: At the current time LMS is much
nicer and easier to use, since the Server-Client Setup offers a number
of advantages over the Smartphone-CC approach. To get music playing it
currently takes quite a few action for Chromecast, while LMS needs just
one. This might change over time.

Sync will probably be a problem with LMS - CC implementation, just like
with Squeeze2upnp, so if that's your main target, then this is probably
not for you. However, Multiroom functionality for CC is currently almost
nonexistent, and it is unclear how Google plans to implement it without
some type of "Server" in the setup. Currently the best you get it
multiple CC devices playing the same radio/stream, but no differet
zones, grouping and ungrouping, stereo pairs, surround setups etc. CC
for Audio is still in early stages, and will likely only show it's true
potential in a few months...or not... 😉

There would be no sync between Chromecast and SB player. I expect if an
API compliant proper Cast Sender is implemented then Chromecast "sync"
would be available.

AFAICT but haven't found the exact quote Google have said they will
support multi room on Chromecast Audio but not just yet (i.e.sometime in
the future). I expect this means same audio output of multiple
Chromecast Audio devices. Not sure if the term "synchronised" was used
by Google or just the reviewers.

How Chromecast Audio will implement proper "synchronisation" would be
interesting but with TCP/IP interconnection it's not impossible as Sonos
have done it.

To a large extend, this is what I do with squeeze2upnp, as you know. It
shows LMS a proper squeezelite instance, receives the audio data, buffer
it locally and then offer to UPnP players a web server where they simply
'GET' this buffered audio data with a bit of header addition/byte order
manipulation. Then it also does the control command / feedback
translation between LMS 'protocol' and UPnP 'protocol' (pause, stop,
seek, timing, metadata, format negotiation, volume, next track
handling). I wish in reality this is a simple as that, as their are many
nasty details, but the principle remains valid

So, re-creating an HTTP stream for the chromecast device from the LMS
sent data would be very simple for me. What I don't know is how
complicated the control part is.

For audio format translation, at the beginning I thought about doing
decoding/encoding inside squeeze2unp and the possibility is still here,
but I decided to focus on the mode where sq2u is more a simple forwarder
of audio data and let the LMS do the transcoding. This to say that
indicating to LMS what codecs are supported based on chromecast device
so that only acceptable format are sent is easy as well.

One draw of using Chromecast is the support for new cloud services, an
area in which LMS is falling behind.
As CommanderROR said, in his opinion, the LMS usage model is preferable
than jumping from app to app for Chromecast.
If Chromecast works with LMS as a player as you gave described above,
will that open up a new kind of plugin that can front any Chromecast
supported cloud service to connected Chromecast devices, even if they
don't officially have LMS support?

These so-called cloud services are all much of a muchness (differing
only in the amount of utter rubbish they serve up, Spreaker being a case
in point). Their main purpose is to tie the user into a recurrent
payment, I'm not really interested in spending more money on content
which is of little more importance than the latest Hollywood pap dressed
up as a blockbuster.

What I do want is a reliable replacement for the now defunct Logi
devices, which can easily access the coherent LMS system.

I don't want to depend on using a smartphone as a battery-hungry
controller with multiple apps installed to access one or two basic
servces.

NO - it is a way of making LMS play through a chromecast device -
nothing more. Most Chromecast supported services have a Chromecast
Sender in the iOS/Android or Chrome Web page and a Custom Chromecast
Receiver with security etc which means they are tightly paired using
private secure messages. To do what you want would then require parts
of Chrome browser to be part of LMS.

I looked at uPNP for LMS abput 8-10 yrs ago and found the
incompatibilities between implementations too much as to make it
impractical without buying many uPNP devices and testing. Since then
DLNA and time has helped but I've admired your tenacity and perseveance
to create a uPNP solution for LMS.

Chromecast devices are simpler than uPNP as there are no onboard inputs
but they are more customisbale than uPNP. A custom Receiver app
(Javascript, HTML and CSS) can be loaded into a Chromecast device and so
its control & behaviour can be made complex. The Default Receiver app
is a basic media and so it simple media controls such as play, pause,
stop, seek, skip, status (playing, paused, idle) as well as metadata -
art, title , subtitle, duration. On top of that there is Application
control which is about what Sender is in control of the Chromecast and
what Recievr app is running. For example, typically if Chromecast is
doing "nothing" and showing pitcure - it is running the Backdrop
receiver application.

My own initial thoughts about the solution was that since your upnp
Squeezelite player works and since the underlying approach of Chromecast
is very similar to uPNP (i.e. a http stream) - modifying Squeezelite
would be the starting point. Since Squeezelite uses C++ - this would
also help as the Protobuf compiler supports C++.

While I have suggested that using the Defautl Receiver there are
alternatives but probably technically more challenging and I'm not sure
whether it would end up with a better solution. For example, it may be
possible for a Custom Receiver to be written which implements Slimproto
in Javascript which is run within Chromecast device. There is an issue
about port 3483 traffic - not sure about security issues with Chromecast
it may be possible to use Websockets to tunnel the port 3483 traffic
to/from LMS but then rhis would also need some Websocket support to be
added to LMS.

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-17 Thread CommanderROR

I'm sort of hoping for a dual-purpose use of the Chromecast.
Use it as a Player with LMS for regular stuff, like webradio or local
content where the LMS Server - Client setup is best suited, and cast
directly to the Chromecast Audio from within a supported app for stuff
like Play Music that isn't properly supported on LMS. Sort of "best of
two worlds" solution... ;)

Also never forget, that even as a pure LMS Player the Chromecast Audio
is a powerful, yet cheap and energy efficient device, that can replace
the current Raspberry Pi + Addon Board + Wifi system many of us are
using at the moment.
I'm looking forware to seeing what bpa nd philippe can dig rig up. Maybe
Google will even make the CA dlna compatible. They did not tell me it's
impossible, they "noted" my suggestion, which probably doesn't mean
anything, but who knows... ;)

While using it as a player for LMS is OK but after that I'm confused -
you need to spell this out much much clearer. I don't know what would
use to control this Chromecast player and how it will be used - you need
to describe your ideal user experience in detail.

> I'm looking forware to seeing what bpa nd philippe can dig rig up. Maybe

Nobody is committing to anything and personally I don't have lots of
time and I have higher priority projects. As I said in my post - the aim
was to ground solutions in reality. I think mixing Chromecast with DLNA
is a waste of time and unlikely as it would be supporting a
"competitor's" solution as uPNP was an initiative promoted by MS and
Intel. This is the world of commerce - think real world.. Neither
Google or Apple are members of DLNA. Chromecast does not support WMA
formats or Airplay.

@bpa

For the second part, streaming right to Chromecast, no modifications or
dev work is required, since that is what the CC was built for. So,
basically that comes as a "free extra".

I hope that makes things clear. Really, the only question is, whether
somebody would be able to bridge the gap from LMS to Chromecast Audio.
That pretty much defines it's usefulness for me. If it works, then it's
great, if not, then no big loss, I'll just keep the CA in a drawer and
pull it out once in a while to play around with it... ;)

I agree about Google adding dlna support btw. It's a long shot, and very
unlikely to happen.

Just making sure everybody understands that support services will only
work with CA from their respective app on iOS/Android and Web page and
not from within LMS. LMS just becomes sort of another cast enable app.
The aim is that the Chromecast device receives it stream from LMS direct
and not cast from a LMS player casting from an Android or similar
devices.

It's getting painful - there are competing ecosystem Airplay, DLNA,
Chromecast and Miracast. There is no point in expending effort on a
system which vendor may abandon (e.g. Logitech and Google TV) so I see
no point in rushing. I ( and I think castalla) too have a drawer full
of gadget such as Noxon, Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Bluetooth adapters,
Mini/Stick PCs (Cubiboard, Raspberry Pi, Odroid) as well as refunds from
failed projects such as Matchstick and mothballed projects such as
Native Client Squeezelite for Chrome.

Currently Chromecast Audio has the right combination of price point and
features that intrigue me most but it will be a thinking exercise for a
while yet. At some point I may delve into Custom Receiver but not
within the near future as I have little appetite to learn Javascript.

My priority LMS development worry is that BBC will be moving to DASH
soon and so have to get LMS prepared for that as well as the chore of
moving plugins from Google Code.

> I agree about Google adding dlna support btw. It's a long shot, and very

Some 3rd party developer may decide to write a Custom Receiver which
implements DLNA but I doubt if it will be Google.

I can't see the point of this device. It's too tied to Google Play. They
are not going to allow that to change.
A Raspberry Pi with Hifiberry DAC+ seems far more suited but if you want

to me as long as you have an HDMI Receiver to plug it into.

Just in case you are looking for one more challenge besides this, you
could always look into the Google Play Music Plugin here on LMS. It's
currently not being maintained, since Hechtus doesn't have the time.
Work on the unofficial API is coming along slowly but surely, so it
might not be a complete waste of time to keep the Plugin on track...

Can be a problem with plugin - knowing when to say "enough" as support
takes up more and more time.

> I'll try to have a look at that, then
While I have tested Javascript and Python command line chromecast player
programs - I ahven't tested a C++ one yet - the one I was looking at is
https://github.com/eriklax/c8tsender

The other alternative starting point I was thinking about but hadn't
time to examine the code - would be a Flac variant of the LMS

and somehow improve the play control.

I don't think it is too difficult but the convolutions that would have
to be performed to get around "security" to enable port 3483 comms make
it unappealing except to those who enjoy getting around security
measures.

The amount of time it takes to support a plugin is the hidden side of
plugin development which users do not appreciate.

What I can't understand is why all these people who make helpful
suggestions don't want to learn or even try to do a bit of programming -
it's not rocket science or brain surgery - nobody gets hurt if it goes
wrong - 8 year old kids learn to program in a short time and adults
learn new languages - anybody can do it.

The GPMusic plugin suffers the same way as any application will suffer
when the API or interface changes (and Chromecast will be no different)
. I believe plugins should be maintained by people who actually use
them as they have a vested interest - otherwise it is a chore to be
done.

That's true although I've very rarely found people here (okay once or
twice) that complain about what you offer. But I agree, this is very
irritating when a guy that has not done anything but using the work you
offer for free starts to whine about your lack of response, quality of
what you've done and starts to tell you 'how it should be done if you
were a good programmer' ... I really have no pretention to be any good
but I don't force anybody do use my work :)

At least you tried - the problem is that there is a diminishing group of
plugin developers / maintainers and this point has to be made known to
users. Without a base of developers, LMS features will break as the
inevitable changes to services and technologies occur.

Even novice, poor or inexperienced developers can provide assistance in
diagnosing problems possibly identify the problem module or even line of
code.

For example, without looking at the GPMusic plugin code - I'm guessing
there is an API change and the plugin has used code from some other
project which probably has experienced the same issue and may even have
been updated - in which case it is worth trying to copy the update over
to the LMS plugin.

I find that program often take three revisions before they look good and
are elegant. Plugins are initially hack jobs trying to glue
incompatible system/technologies together to see if a working solution
is possible. In which case there is unlikely to be an elegant solution
so quickly creating with a solution that works and can be maintained
reasonably is all that is needed. The plugin can be rewritten later if
it proven to be popular/useful and has longevity. The person who
complains that the code is not good often hasn't understood the problem
and the constraints.

As a matter of fact, the plugin works after you update python-pip and
reinstall the inofficial API which is a python module. At least, that's
what I did and understand, I'm not familiar with python.

New setup:

- ASRock Ion 330, Lubuntu 14.04, LMS 7.9, FLAC
- *Duet* > AKG Hearo 888 Titan (home office), *Boom + Canton ASF 75
SC* (master bedroom), *Boom* (master bathroom), *Radio* (guest
  bathroom), *RPi + KODI 15 + XSqueeze* > Samsung UE60H6270 > Denon
  AVR-770SD > Mission 2.1 speakers (living room)
- *Classic* > Parasound DAC 1500 > vintage Wega Modul 42V amp (42E
equalizer, 42T tape deck + Thorens TD 160 Mk II turntable) > Quadral
  Vulkan Mk II (music room)

True. Actually, with a few small changes the GPM Plugin does function.
But it's getting more "patchworky" and once the API implements new
features...
Well never mind. Enough OT here... ☺

Can't agree more ... currently I'm sort of close to version 2 of this
UPnP bridge plugin. I know exactly what I want to do now should I
rewrite it, but what really stops me is that I'm still nowhere with one
of my key goals which was to get sync with Sonos. Until I've done that,
I don't want to do a re-architecture I might regret - and this sync
problem is driving me nuts :)
