[discuss] OpenOffice.org Premium -- steps for 2.0.3

2006-04-23 Thread KamiHír
As you probably know there is an enhanced version of OpenOffice.org
called OpenOffice.org Premium.

You can download from here:
ftp://ftp.fsf.hu/OpenOffice.org_hu/devel/OOB680_m5_Premium/
http://ftp.fsf.hu/OpenOffice.org_hu/devel/OOB680_m5_Premium/
(for Linux and Windows in English and Hungarian)

It contains many different templates. With version 2.0.3 I started
organizing these templates in the default openoffice.org categories:

officorr -> “Business Correspondence”
offimisc -> “Other Business Documents”
personal -> “Personal Correspondence and Documents”
forms -> “Forms and Contracts”
finance -> “Finances”
educate -> “Education”
layout -> “Presentation Backgrounds”
presnt -> “Presentations”
misc -> “Miscellaneous”

layout for Impress backgrounds, presnt for Impress prewritten presentations.

Can someone organize English templates to me? I am uploading the zip
file (with templates and empty folders) here:

w3.enternet.hu/szalaik/download/TEMPLATES1-en-US.zip

I also would like to build German version of OpenOffice.org, so I need
help to arrange German language version of templates. I used the
original OpenOffice.org extras CD and OOoPR-box compilation. The
collected German templates are going here:

w3.enternet.hu/szalaik/download/TEMPLATES1-de.zip

So can you contribute this for next OpenOffice.org Premium?

Thanks,
KAMI

[discuss] OpenOffice.org Premium - The well known office suite with more extras bundled

2006-02-23 Thread KamiHír

Hi OpenOffice.org fans!

I would introduce my modification for OpenOffice.org. It called OpenOffice.org
Premium. What does it means?
It is a general OpenOffice.org build with lots more extras.
* more than 2400 cliparts
* templates
* documentations
* other documents
* more than 90 fonts
* 40 fontwok gallery items (will be parts of OOo in 2.0.3)
* installer subcomponent menu - to controll the installation of items above
Every part of package is localized via sdf stucture.
We had a Premium build version 2.0.1 with Hu locale. The users liked the idea.
Now we have created a snapshot from M155 to show this cool thing to everybody
:o)
HU and EN-US version are available (with java) this time only for windows. Linux
and other builds possible. There was a Linux build from 2.0.1...
The document and template content for EN-US just an example, I am waiting for
ideas what should we include it. You can add languages easily like the general
OpenOffice.org template and samples system (./lang/)...
The binary Windows build is here (ENUS and HU):
http://ftp.fsf.hu/OpenOffice.org_hu/devel/M155_Premium/
Source modification of OpenOffice.org called OpenOffice.org Premium is here:
http://ftp.fsf.hu/OpenOffice.org_hu/devel/Source_mod/
Current version is here:
http://ftp.fsf.hu/OpenOffice.org_hu/devel/Source_mod/OOo202Premium-step7.zip
NB. You have to apply DejaVu font replacement patch before Premium patchset!
(Will be integrated by the 2.0.3 time)
Latest DejaVu patch is here:
http://ftp.fsf.hu/OpenOffice.org_hu/devel/Source_mod/dejavufonts-2_2-2.zip
Licenses:
All of my modification's license is same as OOo licence.

Currently there are four issu about this modification. I have splitted it
because it seems to big to make a right decision :o)

Here is the IZ articles:

How do you use these things?

How to install my OpenOffice.org Gallery

  1.

 Surf to
 http://hu.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=377
then download the latest version of my Gallery by name: Galéria -
Gyűjtemény 1 (version). The current version is 1.22.

  2.

Unpack the zip file with subfolders (defaultly) into „C:\Program
Files\OpenOffice.org 2.0\share\gallery\ folder” under Windows or
 into „/opt/OpenOffice.org 2.0/share/gallery/” under Linux.

  3.

Run OpenOffice.org program and check the new Gallery themes and
items in Tools menu -> Gallery. If you con not see any new item
you have to restart the OpenOffice.org application and the
 Quickstarter too.

must be done first and foremost:

*Implement a ClipArt system to compete with Microsoft's
*Improve Impress usability - see review posted all over online for
suggestions

These two things will increase appeal to the average home computer user.
With that audience, OpenOffice will gain tremendous ground - but
until then,

the lack of ClipArt especially, will continue to distract attention from
your excellent suite. Potential users, such as schools and families,
need

clipart available for projects, but without it they will continue to pay
ridiculous amounts for Microsoft Office.

Thanks for your consideration,

Derek Meyer

I also haven't read the reviews on Impress of which you speak, but
from posts to these lists I would not tend to argue with the idea that
Impress still needs work in some areas.

As to the ClipArt... I'm a pragmatic sort of fellow. One can find clip
art all over the place -- Web sites too numerous to mention (just
Google for it), CD's at Wal-mart with a few thousand images for $10,
etc. For that matter, I have absolutely no compunction against going
to http://office.microsoft.com/clipart/default.aspx?lc=en-us and
getting clip art from Microsoft. There are no licensing restrictions
that I can see and the images work perfectly well in OOo.

I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the OpenClipArt project; don't get me
wrong, I'm behind the concept and I appreciate the efforts of the
contributors, but... well, way too many penguins for one thing. I've
tried to use it several times and I have yet to find an image that I
need. And until OOo can utilize SVG images, the WMF format from the MS
site is still the best choice for resizable images.

Re: [discuss] new incubator : Call for Name

Laurent Godard írta:

Hi all

Following the OOoCon, i will setup the new incubtaor project i proposed
on my presentation
http://marketing.openoffice.org/ooocon2005/presentations/friday_c8.sxi

to sumarize, the purpose is not to compete with api project but to help
it, puting a bridge from new addons developpers to it.

The new incubator project will adresse these points

- help new commers to deal with first steps in addon production
Help in their naive-lang may be nedded
- build generic tools implementing best-pratices for each scripting
languages so that a maximum number of addons share the same developping
guidelines and same look and feel
- provides a browsable repository
- provides a tool for users to install in 'one-click' an addon from a
list

see the presentation for more details

The long term goal is to bring OOo usefull features through addon (in
whatever language supported) and integrate it in OOo if popular

You are all welcommed on board. There is a lot of work to do and not
especially hard coding but also translation and new commer welcoming
Obviously, some volunteers dealing with basic, python, java, c++ are
welcommed to help building the tools (i say, a generic wizard,
translation mechanism compatible with OOo translation tools ...)

For now, it appears that this incubator needs a new name as it is more
than scripting and we need something that identifies all the concerned
levels (dev, repository, end-users)

Here are the propositions

- addon.openoffice.org (already 1 vote)
- extensions.openoffice.org (already 3 votes)
- scripting.openoffice.org (already 0 vote) -i leave it in case

We are actually discussing on the dev@scripting.openoffice.org mailing
list. Feel free to join the discussion there
I plan to close this discussion on friday and move to the new
.openoffice.org list when up

[Update]: it as been reported that extensions and scripting are used
in cvs modules and may disturb developpers. Btw, there will be no CVS
for this incubator. Feel free to propose anything you would think
better, conforming to the ideas exposed in the OOoCon presentation

Thanks again and join us

Laurent

It might be "sea" as codename: Scripting, externsion, addon...

Re: [discuss] New file extensions?

2005-10-21 Thread KamiHír

From the help:

 XML File Formats

By default, OpenOffice.org loads and saves files in the OpenDocument
file format.

The OpenDocument file format is an XML file format standardized by OASIS
 (Organization for the Advancement of
Structured Information Standards).

   OpenDocument file format names

OpenOffice.org 2.0 uses the following file formats:

Document format

File extension

OpenDocument Text

*.odt

OpenDocument Text Template

*.ott

OpenDocument Master Document

*.odm

HTML Document

*.html

HTML Document Template

*.oth

OpenDocument Spreadsheet

*.ods

OpenDocument Spreadsheet Template

*.ots

OpenDocument Drawing

*.odg

OpenDocument Drawing Template

*.otg

OpenDocument Presentation

*.odp

OpenDocument Presentation Template

*.otp

OpenDocument Formula

*.odf

OpenDocument Database

*.odb

The HTML format is not an OpenDocument format.

Older File Formats Prior to OpenOffice.org 2.0

If you want to exchange documents with users that still use older
versions of OpenOffice.org, save the document in the following formats:

Application

File extension

OpenOffice.org Writer before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.sxw

OpenOffice.org Writer templates before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.stw

Master documents before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.sxg

OpenOffice.org Calc before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.sxc

OpenOffice.org Calc templates before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.stc

OpenOffice.org Impress before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.sxi

OpenOffice.org Impress templates before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.sti

OpenOffice.org Draw before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.sxd

OpenOffice.org Draw templates before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.std

OpenOffice.org Math before OpenOffice.org 2.0

*.sxm

These file name extensions help you to identify the different file types
in a directory. If you unzip the XML files, you can use applications
other than OpenOffice.org to edit the file contents.

If you want to define another file format as the default, choose *Tools
- Options - Load/Save - General*

to find alternative file formats for each OpenOffice.org document type.

   XML file structure

Documents in OpenDocument file format are stored as compressed zip
archives that contain XML files. To view these XML files, you can open
the OpenDocument file with an unzip program. The following files and
directories are contained within the OpenDocument files:

   *

The text content of the document is located in *content.xml*.

By default, *content.xml* is stored without formatting elements
like indentation or line breaks to minimize the time for saving
and opening the document. On the *Tools - Options - Load/Save -
General* tab page you can activate the use of indentations and
line breaks by clearing the check box *Size optimization for XML
 format (no pretty printing)*.

   *

The file *meta.xml* contains the meta information of the document,
which you can enter under *File - Properties*.

If you save a document with a password, *meta.xml* will not be
 encrypted.

   *

The file *settings.xml* contains further information about the
 settings for this document.

   *

In *styles.xml,* you find the styles applied to the document that
can be seen in the Styles and Formatting window.

   *

The *meta-inf/manifest.xml* file describes the structure of the
 XML file.

Additional files and folders can be contained in the packed file format.

   Definition of the XML formats

The DTD (Document Type Description) files for the older formats can be
found in $[officepath]\share\dtd.

The schema for the OpenDocument formats can be found on the
www.oasis-open.org web site.

Note that the formats are subject to certain licenses. You can find
notes on the licenses at the start of the DTD files. More detailed
information can be found on the OpenOffice.org
 website.

As you may know, TheOpenCD provide a PNG version of the library.
Another 3-rd party, http://epscliparts.sourceforge.net provide the
images in EPS format for easy inclusion on OOo.
Not last, there is work as Novell to integrate the clipart library (in
PNG format for now) into their version of OOo.

Do you remember when Daniel Carrera tried to assemble an "extras"
package for OOo containing clipart and photos? (if not, see the
archives of this list)

If you still don't find anything, have a look at:
http://website.openoffice.org/source/browse/website/www/tryouts/dcarrera/download/

I have downloaded the zip file provided by epscliparts. I tried to load
in OOo, but they do not appear. I only see a border without the real
content. What's wrong? Did I miss something? Another bug? Not correct
conversation?

This time, I would point to my galery. It contains more than 2300
elements in various themes. In my opinion my work might be the base a
free galery for OOo.

The place wehere you can get it:
http://hu.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=377&expandFolder=377&folderID=456
The current version is downloadable from here:
http://office.fsf.hu/work/Gallery-1-21.zip

Importing OCAL into my gallery would be very nice, but currently there
aren't any way to do it. SVG import missed (the current contributor's
work not perfect), I also cannot import eps files. So we have to find
another solution. If you have a good ide let's share with us. If you
have a good resource to our galery, please send to me it or a link.

Hello All

I have notice for a long time that the Icons that identify the main
programs of OpenOffice are poorly designed. Main programs meaning "Write,
Calc, Impress... etc".

1. They are crowded and poorly identify the application they are referring
to.
One should be able to only glance at the Icon and identify the Application
the file belongs to (Icon shape and color). This becomes clearly annoying when
using laptops or high resolution displays in small screens.

I hate to say it but take an example at the MS Office Icons. They are
clearly identifiable by shape and by color. eg. Word, excel.. etc.

This is an issue that, even though is not critical, touches the visual
ergonomics of the application, and it is annoying. I personally consider it
critical since it limits the comfort level of the user. And it makes me think
how something so basic has been overlooked.

Please keep it in mind for your next release.

Hope you really take note of this.

Thank You

Ismael Antadillas

I guess in the future someone might adapt Draw to be able to do this

priorities. eg adpating Draw for work in schools with whole class
interactive teaching.

Project like application is would be nice, but I think it is not has to

Use Thunderbird or Evolution. No point in diverting resources into

the command ooffice -quickstart & then run openoffice it takes a
little over 1 minute. If I increase this to 128mb of ram it preforms a
little better. But it still takes an incredible amount of time to
start up. This is followed by a 10 second lag where your words will
come up slowly.

Altering the memory usage controls does nothing.

I have compared these machines with the equivalent (actually poorer)
windows machines. They run open office much faster even though Windows
xp uses much more memory. I haven't even preloaded them.

Is there any plans for a lighter version of open office that can still
read .doc specifications (I know about abiword and koffice)?
Alternatively is there a library that I can add to make openoffice
usable if you are running only 64mb of ram?
Is there a team that is working on making a lighter version of open
office (I will join it)?

Could I please get some answers to these questions. Recycling old PC's
is a huge issue. We need an office sweet that is use able and so far
your office sweet is it. Sadly it cannot run well on these machines as
they are not the latest specification.

Please Open office you are my only hope?

You may try latest betas of OOo. 1.9.115 starts much quickier than olde
builds (for example First Public Beta)

Re: [discuss] Why I had to switch back to MS Word

2005-07-06 Thread KamiHír

Greg Bulmash írta:

Open Office and I were getting along swimmingly, then two things
happened that made me dump it.

Search and Replace: Word has support for "special characters" (i.e.
line breaks, paragraph breaks, page breaks, etc.) When you're trying
to convert an e-mail full of broekn lines back into paragraphs, via a
search and replace, it's simple with Word, impossible with Open
Office. Wasn't enough to make me dump OO.o (as I could do it in an
external text editor).

Searc and replace
More options
Regular expression
See the help to check this option...

Mail Merge: With Microsoft it's simple. Create a table or
spreadsheet, use the first row as headers, and then just punch in the
data in the following rows. The headers are taken as field names when
you do a mail merge. If they don't match a predefined set, no
problem. It's easy to plug in your custom fields.

Open Office kept trying to force me to use its built-in database
component or address book component, neither of which could be made
suitable to my desired workflow methods. I couldn't use an .odt doc
with a table, nor could I use a spreadsheet. Perhaps I'm missing some
special thing I need to do to use one of them, but in Word, I don't
have to do it.

I've got some large mailings coming up. I'd have to spend many extra
hours stumbling through OO.o's preferred way of doing things instead
of doing things my preferred way.

You can use Bult-in component but you can use lot of type of database.
You can connect with odbc jdbc sdbc...

What is your preffered way?

Great kudos on how far OO.o has come. It's *there* for many business
functions, but for others... I'll check it out again at 2.1.

Re: [discuss] Multiple Versions of Documents

2005-06-30 Thread KamiHír

Hello!

First of all:
Data loss without warning is a very very bad thing.

Mathias Bauer írta:

Peter Hillier-Brook wrote:

I recently reported a Priority 2 bug in the OO.o 1.9.104 beta release
(Issue #49865), occasioned by the severe loss of data in files
containing several versions of a document. The problem was provoked by
the conversion process to version 2 file formats (.sxw to .odt and .sxc
to .ods) in that all versions of the document but the current one were
discarded.

Well and good so far, but the response to the issue was surprising in
its MS-like quality - it's not a bug, it's a feature!

I wouldn't tell that MS-like quality. Did you ever get a response from
MS at all? :-)

OK, seriously now.

From a *technical* POV the current behavior *is* a feature, though it is

not adequate for the use case that didn't exist when the feature was
designed. At that point in time it appeared logical that versions belong
to the source document, not to the copy and so they are intentionally
removed.

If it is a feature Peter wants to turn off it.And also lot of user want
to turn of it. I haven't got too much versioned documents, but the
bigger companies may like versioning feature.

If you think about document converters you are right if you call this
design wrong - I agree. But it's still a feature change, not a bug fix
from a technical POV. This classification into "feature/enhancement" and
"defect" does not tell anything about the severity of the isse, it's
only a technical classification. You could also call it a "design bug",
but that category doesn't exist in IZ, and IMHO "enhancement/feature" is
a better match to this non existing category than "defect".

In my opinion, the defect word fit more the problem, because it cause
data loss without warning. The right solution may be to add one checkbox
to save as dialog and one to documentum converter with text like "Save
(or keep) version information". It can be defaultly disabled (or the
text can be "Remove version information" defaultly enabled). If we can
convert sx* -> od* perfectly, I hope we also can convert version
information at least to open formats (OpenDocument later MS Open XML
format if it will be really open). Doc versioning is an interesting
theme, but it may need to much power to make happy not so many people.

But I don't think that this classification is the problem, if the
"feature change" was accepted for OOo2.0 you wouldn't care, would you?
OTOH even if you call it a "defect" this doesn't give it a higher
probability to become fixed for OOo2.0 because it doesn't make the fix
easier and less risky.

The problem is that you can't just revert the behavior and always copy
versions when a document copy is created by "SaveAs". This can create
other severe problems (privacy issues because unwanted data rushes into
copies of documents - you remember all the embarrassing cases where
unwanted metadata or document history data was accidently stored to
published MS documents?). So a new design of the whole feature is
necessary. If a document converter should preserve the file "as is" we
need to change more than only the versions, also metadata needs to be
preserved.

It is definitely too late to create a new design for this feature in the
OOo2.0 release. If a workaround is possible instead that allows to
customize the behavior via API is currently under investigation. That
doesn't make a feature redesign obsolete but can avoid at least a data
loss in the document converter use case. Wether we can do something for
OOo2.0 depends on the feasibility of the mentioned workaround.

Best regards,
Mathias

Hi,
If you edit a document in OpenOffice writer (1.1.3) and save
only in external formats, you get the message "Saving in
external formats may have caused information loss. Do you
still want to close?"
This would be a lot more helpful if it told you exactly what
has been lost. Microsoft Word does this - if you save in a
format where something must get lost, it tells you exactly
what it is about your document that will be lost (e.g. font
sizes, unusual alignment, etc). I guess it does this by
asking the filter what it can and can't save and comparing
this with what you've actually done in the document.
Obviously it doesn't tell you about things that you haven't
used, and if you haven't used anything that will get lost
then it doesn't bother you at all.
Can you put this on the to-do list? I think it's important
because interoperability with Word etc is a major reason why
someone would use OpenOffice rather than (say) LyX.
Thanks. Silas
