2006-11-27 Thread w1id
Sartori was a consulting engineer at Texas Instruments when he wrote the
article. In those days it was possible to have a semiconductor company
manufacture custom devices on a small lot or sample basis. Therefore, he had
access to a gold mine of resources few others had. However, custom devices were
generally derived from an existing devices with some specifications
differences. At some point in time, Sartori left TI and pursued other venues. I
haven't looked at specific devices but it seem that with advances in component
technology, it might be possible to improve or replace the original circuits.
It would be a race against time however as the whole semiconductor industry is
going to strictly surface mount devices in ever smaller packages. Thre could be
even more opportunities as the package sizes change but the question is would
an average Ham be able to handle it?

A very useful link. If you replace the "radio-mart" with any eBay ID,
you'll get just their neutral and negative feedbacks. If not very
experienced with eBay, the only thing that matters is the negatives -
ignore the positives. Look for common threads and repetitive
complaints. In this case, 97.5% positive sounds not so bad, until you
realize that 118 people were shafted and chances are that they not
only got screwed in the deal, but got their own negative feedback from
radio-mart as well.

Actually, if you use Firefox, this is a "plugin." Install it, then right-click
on any eBay user name
to get a list of neutral and negative feedback.

Don't use eBay without it. . . . Really!!

[drakelist] For Sale: Original Drake 4-Line w/orig boxes, manuals

2006-11-27 Thread Duane Calvin
I have an original Drake 4-Line for sale. It is in good operating condition
overall with one exception. The R-4 is getting weak on the higher bands,
but the lower bands are good. Both are cosmetically good condition - the
front panels are very clean but the R-4 has some spotting along the right
edge, and the T-4's frequency dial has darkened considerably centering on
the 250 KHz mark (dark amber from 175 - 325 and lighter amber for 25 KHz
each side of that.) The T-4 operates fine and puts out good power (100w+).
I can forward photos to interested parties. Set includes R-4, T-4, MS-4 and
AC-3. All have the original boxes, and these would be double packed (inside
overpack boxes) for shipment to you. I've used this station occasionally,
like for SKN's and enjoyed it very much.

$325 + I'll split shipping/packing with you.

This is my own opinion >> I always heard the solid tubes(at the time) were a
compromise. I had heard they got pretty hot and at the time didn't offer any
advantages over the tubes they replaced. Today, some of the 3rd mixer stuff
is better replaced with Sherwood mods actually.

I also heard they didn't sometimes work in the circuit as well as the
original tube.

This is all hearsay, since I have no experience with them. I think they were
pretty rare too. Plus that was 30 yrs ago so there may be a lot of better
ways to improve the circuits now.

1, the R4C didnt work,
2, case was also badly dented,
3, was supposed to be "Loaded"
3, upon inspection I found it had been dropped that hard that the power
transformer was on that much of an angle (about 25 Deg's) that it jarred the
3rd mixer (6EJ7) out of place and could not be re-inserted into it's socket
without first straightening the Transformer, No extra filters, this was a "Mint
collecters condition from my own personal collection" description.

Just as well I live in Australia otherwise I would've knocked on this Guy's
front door with a crowbar, no effort was made for refund due to damage only neg
feed back to me.

The thing I just cant fathom is really there isnt that much good DRAKE equip on
epay, so where does he get it from??

He has another L75 (S/n344) this one's rare and unused!!! also L4B (S/n 6122)
mint and unused, as well as a myriad or other "mint, near new, collectors
condition, close to new, from estate, new tubes, rare find, best i've ever
seen, close to mint, from my personal collection", listed this week, it
would be interesting to log S/n's and see how many appear again I'm sure there
would be one or two.

However, the small knobs are not original, there is paint missing on the

But the piece de resistance is the missing fuse cover. I wonder if this thing
works at all? Let the buyer beware. The fool who wins this auction deserves

Hello Neil.

First, there was an article by SARTORI (the guy that later produced the
solid tubes commercially) in a 197x (1975 or 6 I think) QST article and was
written specifically for making solid state tubes for the Drake B and C
line. I looked very hard at it at the time. I had a friend that was an
executive for Tektronix. He pointed out to me that the specific transistors
were not that hard to find but that Sartori had spec'ed the hard to find
cases (TO220) for the transistors he used. I was recently told that Sartori
did that because he worked in the industry and got the transistor maker to
make them special for him so most people (including me) would have a hard
time finding them in the cases he recommended in the article. I recently
ran across a mod on some site (I thought it was WB4HFN but maybe not) where
the article took the 6EV7 vox tube (for the T4XB) (found it--
http://www.geocities.com/maxmartin3/drake/tr4xc.html )
which used simple 2N5485 and MPSA42 along with a string of 4 43v transcient
voltage suppressor diodes, a 12v zener and a 1N4007. My T4XB used to and
still eats that particular tube.

The regulator tube for the T4 was even simpler but used a 150v (I think)
zener diode but those are getting hard to find now but they are out there.

Anyway, there have been articles about making solid state replacements for
tubes. The one in QST that I mentioned above and I also remember an article
in Ham Radio Magazine that did the same thing but aimed at the R390 or KWM2
(can not remember which but a Collins radio). Those transistors were even
harder (for me) to find. I think the article was in the early 80's.

I purchased some blue LED builbs in #47 and #53 style holders from www.
superbrightleds.com ( http://www.superbrightleds.com/BA9S6_specs.htm ) in
their BA9 and BA7 models. The price was not bad. I think around $3 per
bulb but do not remember for sure.

One of the individuals ( N9OO )on this list sells a blue LED light bar for
the TR7 at http://home.wi.rr.com/n9oo/products/tr7lamp/d7lamp.html .

The filter material is not hard to get WA9TGT sells them (
http://www.wa9tgt.com/Dial_Filter_Page.html ) and are quite cheap ($10 for 4
sets) so if you do not have a local source these guys can sure help you out.

I have not found a source for solid tubes or the parts to make them, at
least not on a reliable scale.

Thank you.

Yes. You should be able to find comments in the list archives by
myself and others regarding blue LEDs. See also here:

http://www.146760.net/cgi-bin/pro/emalbum.cgi?c=show_thumbs;p=Field%20Day/2006%20-%20Photos%20by%20NU0C;i=16;pg=2

(long URL, watch for line wrap).

The first all-blue TR7 - meter & dial lamps, digital display, ALC
and RV7 LEDs have all been replaced with blue LEDs.

The coloe is more "blue" than the blue-aqua color of standard lamps,
and is quite striking.

A very useful link. If you replace the "radio-mart" with any eBay ID,
you'll get just their neutral and negative feedbacks. If not very
experienced with eBay, the only thing that matters is the negatives -
ignore the positives. Look for common threads and repetitive
complaints. In this case, 97.5% positive sounds not so bad, until you
realize that 118 people were shafted and chances are that they not only
got screwed in the deal, but got their own negative feedback from
radio-mart as well.

RE: [drakelist] Bad tubes in L4B

2006-11-27 Thread Rodger Singley
Joe and Drakelist,

You definitely should not be driving the grid current to excessive levels as
this can easily damage the tube. A couple of thoughts:

1. The L4B was designed and sold when the legal limit was 1000 watts
input for CW and 2000 peak input for SSB. At a true 1000 watts input, the
actual output should be around 550-700 watts on CW depending upon the
frequency; the typical efficiency for a class B grounded grid linear
amplifier is around 60-65% and there will be some additional loss in the pi
output circuit-especially as the operating frequency increases.. However,
even fairly expensive watt meters are generally specified at around +/- 5%
of full scale accuracy which would be +/- 100 watts on a 2000 watt scale.
Typical watt meters like the Drake 4 series and Heathkit meters are
generally +/-200 watt accuracy on the 2000 watt range so don't depend too
much on your watt meter unless it is a recently calibrated Bird unit or a
well calibrated RF voltmeter or scope used with a good 50 ohm load. I would
be very cautious about any continuous carrier testing at above 1000 watts DC
input.

2. Is your loading control adjusted properly? Generally, the proper
operating conditions will be reached with a fairly heavy setting of the
loading control and a lightly loaded amplifier will have excessive grid
current and poor linearity. For a dual 3-500Z amplifier at 1000 watts
input, you should use around 40-60 watts drive maximum to reach the rated
1000 watt input with proper operating conditions. I wouldn't try to drive
the L4B to the current legal limit as you are operating in past its design
limits and you are not gaining any significant increase in received signal
strength; going from 1000 to 1500 watts output is less than 2 db and the
typical s meter is 6 db per unit so the receiving operator wouldn't even be
able to tell the difference. If you increase the loading too far past the
optimal point, efficiency will suffer.

3. Do you have the AGC line hooked up to your T-4XC? Generally this
will help to prevent excessive grid current as the transmitter drive will be
automatically reduced.

It has been a little while since I have used an L4B but I currently have a
Drake L7 and a Heath SB220 which use the same dual 3-500Z setup and the
tuning on these is similar. I also have a homebrew triple 4CX-800 amplifier
which I built to stand up to contesting and to work as a linear amplifier
follow a high level AM transmitter and the most critical parameter on it is
screen grid current; fortunately not an issue with the L4B and similar
triode amplifiers. The L4B is a very well built amplifier and will run well
at 1kw DC input on CW and should develop 1200-1300 watts peak output on SSB.
I wouldn't operate CW in the high voltage position as this does put too much
stress on the tubes and power supply. You might also want to run the power
supply on 240 volts as soon as possible as the voltage regulation will be
better and there will be less chance of flickering or dimming lights in the
rest of your house.

Good luck and 73,

Rodger WQ9E

Hi Chuck
The AC-3 or AC-4 will work just fine . You should always adjust Idle
Current or Bias current as it is very simple And ALWAYS AVOID RADIO-MART

He sold a power supply to a friend of my it was in such bad shape when
it arrived and add to that the fact that the supply did not work as it
had high voltage an just about all pins. He does not care about anyone
but himself and MONEY.. That crook sold me a TR-4 in Nov. 0f 04 it was
in horrible shape bouncing around in the shipping box would not work on
forty .. The list is endless ..
Most all other sellers on the Drake Pages of E-Bay are very reputable
One such seller is Bill & Sue They sell a fair amount of drake equipment..

Good Luck ..

Re: [drakelist] Bad tubes in L4B

2006-11-27 Thread Jason Buchanan
hi,

you'll probably get a lot of responses but i'll throw my 2 cents in...

1. the L4/L4B does not have an exhaust system that will keep the tubes cool if
you use something other than SSB on the SSB position. The plates should show
some color but if they become orange that is too much. The amp was never
designed to push enough air to meet today's 1500W output limits.

2. never let the grid current go past 300mA

3. 500V is a lot of sag - get some 10 or 12 gauge wire and bring 240V to the
amp.

My old L4 will produce around 1100W on the original 8163 tubes (Amperex
graphite 3-400Z, made in 1968) but this is on a 240V circuit fed with #10 gauge
wire 30 feet from the breaker box. This output was measured against an LP-100
digital wattmeter to a dummy load. New RF Parts tubes will produce maybe 1300
but the Drake cooling system is not up to the task of handling this kind of
heat. Take a look at the photo of my L4: http://n1su.com/tubes/3-400Z-idle.jpg
- notice the glass chimneys have a fluted top that push the air over the anode
heat dissipator (they're curved intentionally). If you have Coleman lantern
glass with straight sides your tubes' anode seals won't get enough air across
them and are going to be put under a lot of stress... and may either fail or
the joint inside the tube where the plate meets the anode pin could deform.
The short answer is "use low voltage mode for everything but SSB" - be sure to
oil the fan motor bearings once a year. I use Norvey, Inc turbine lubricating
oil (never gums up - go to home depot).

3-400Z / 3-500Z tubes are rated at a max of 140mA grid current each. 300mA
grid current for both tubes is pushing it but full scale is certain death for
the tubes and if you're not careful you will deform the grid cage inside the
tube and short the grid to the filaments, which would do even worse damage.
The grid current increases as the plate voltage decreases - you're having to
push it very hard. Perhaps the tubes are weak but I think your lower output
power is more likely due to running the amp on 120V. 400mA grid current is
probably splattering all over the band. You can reduce the grid current by
rotating the LOAD control clockwise until your power drops around 50-100 watts
- this will help the linearity and reduce the grid current but the pressure you
take off the tubes puts pressure on the tuning network.

500V is a lot of sag. You're probably putting the power supply through some
hard work... 10-3 or 12-3 romex would be a good choice, 14-3 would not be.
Bigger is better. 120V ain't cuttin' it.

hope this helps!

[drakelist] L4 B power transformer.

2006-11-27 Thread John King

John King <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang

I have a Transformer from a Drake L4B Linear
Amplifier.

I have the Drake L4 B instruction manual and on page
2-5 the terminal strip wiring for 240 volt operation
is shown. The trouble is that my L4B transformer
doesn't have a terminal strip. My L4 B transformer has
seven (7) leads coming out of the top of the winding.

I need to identify each of the seven(7) leads. They
are as follow:
 Brown
 Yellow/Black
 Black
 Blue
 Green
 Yellow/Blue
 Green/Black

Can anyone tell me what winding connects to which
color wire? I am sure that there are two leads per
winding but I can't associate the leads with a
particular winding. I guess I need to know which color
wire went to which terminal eventhough I don't have
the terminal, that way I can tell which windings go
where to wire for 240 volt operation.

Maybe if someone could tell me which wire from the
transformer went to which terminal FROM LEFT TO RIGHT,
I could get it wired safely for 240 volt operation.

Please assist me if you can. 73, John, K5PGW

eBay radiomart guy, but he seems to have the market cornered.

Thanks & 73,

Chuck

Hey Guys,
Anyone have a good "trick" for removing free play in a 2B tuning knob,
short of re-stringing the dial cordTunes smooth and true, but has
about 2 hash marks on the skirt of slop..
