Kevin, Snow is a funny white stuff that comes from the sky during the winter
cold months, When my wife (Filipino) first came to this country, UK, she had
never seen snow in her life, during her first winter here it snowed a lot, I
took her to the local shopping centre, during our walk around the centre I
became aware there was water trailing along behind here. I casually asked
why she was 'leaking' and discovered she had collected both coat pockets
full of snow as she wanted to take it back home and keep it. She also asked
what they were going to do with all the dead trees around as all the leaves
had fallen off !
Thankfully I also have all my tube/valve radios here in the shack to keep me
warm during the winter months, not a 3 legged fuse in sight. ahh that warm
winter glow, 73 Max M0GHQ

Chuck -

You could, but the fuse would have to be able to clear the 650V B+ to
open the circuit. A fuse that is RATED to do this is about six inches
long and costs about $5 each. The KWS-1 uses one in it's power
supply. This problem is why Drake used the 0.82 ohm resistor in the
L-4B power supply. It just explodes if the HV (2800 VDC) gets shorted!

This was a good discussion, brought out some ideas which were shot down
for various reasons. I must confess that I ran three B-lInes 24 x 7 for
about five years in autostart teletype service with no failures. Keep
in mind that the ONLY failure scenario that affects this is if the bias
supply ONLY fails completely and suddenly. As Gary said that doesn't
happen very often. I've been running a LOT of Drake gear with a LOT of
AC-4 power supplies for many hours over the last 40 years, and it hasn't
happened to me, yet I only KNOW of it happening a half dozen times
over all those years, including Gary's. Usually bias supplies present
first with increased ripple, drifting Final idle current, VOX hanging, etc.

Probably the best answer is a relay in the primary circuit that has to
be pulled in by the bias voltage to power the supply. This could also
serve to reduce the wear and tear on that difficult to replace power
switch in the T-4X/TR-4. There would have to be a provision to
'over-ride' the relay to close it until the bias voltage was present,
but that's not insurmountable.

I think the best "practical" answer is to replace those bias filter caps
that are 40 years old with new ones, and if you leave the room for any
length of time, turn it off. Also, if you start to notice weird VOX
action, hum on the CW signal, etc., check out the power supply!

When the bias fails, the finals conduct. The VOX trips because the bias

Chuck,
Nothing you can do short of turning the equipment off would prevent the
final tubes to fully conduct if the bias went positive and the VOX trips the
relay. I have had it happen only once in the 15 years I have been using
Drake equipment and I only noticed it after I keyed my TR-6, very high
idling current. Fortunate the VOX didn't trip while I was out of the room.
Best way to prevent a problem is to, at a minimum, recap the bias supply in
the AC-4. In my case I bought just the bare PC boards from the Heath Kit
Shop and my own parts. My five AC-4's and one AC-3 have been rebuilt with
them.

Nope...

If B+, screen and filament voltages are applied, and the cathode is
grounded, the finals will draw however much current the power supply can
put out until either the fuse blows, the cathode resistor(s) open up,
the plate choke opens up, or the tubes melt far enough down to
disconnect the plate cap!! :-) Absence of drive has absolutely no
effect on this scenario.

Probably the weakest link is the 15 ohm cathode resistors. They are 1W,
which would reach 2W dissipation at about 360 mA current through each
tube, which is about 230W in each tube. Unfortunately, low value carbon
comp resistors often go DOWN in value when overheated, so the
dissipation could actually go down as they heated, enabling them to last
longer!

No, the problem in this case is purely the result of the finals
"saturating" (to use a SS term) when there is no grid bias applied.

They do NOT have an I-DSS like a FET either!

Put another way, a SS final is normally "off" with no bias, and a tube
final is normally "on".

That brings up a question in my mind. Is the actual cause of damage
to the finals the failure of the bias circuit, or is it due to the
finals being overdriven? In that case wouldn't a device in the power
supply which limits the power supplied to the rig to a safe level
be a better idea, or an "overdrive" cut out?

For example, in a transitor rig there is often some sort of
protective circuit to prevent the finals from being destroyed
if they draw too much current. Many Japanese rigs use limiters
o "fold back" circuits.

Ten-Tec does not use one, instead they includea saftey cut out in their
power supplies.

Could a similar circuit be devised and used in this case?

Yes, 100 watts is too much. You need to understand the PEP-to-carrier
ratio

involved with AM. The manual states that with 100% modulated AM (I assume
this to mean full-carrier, both sidebands), the transmitter should be
adjusted to produce 500 watts DC plate input in the amplifier. This
translates to 250-300 watts carrier output. If you are using a Drake
controlled-carrier AM transmitter, adjust everything per manual specs and
you

should be OK, but in any case do not exceed the maximum PEP ratings of the
amplifier or the maximum legal limit allowed by your licence, whichever is
lower.

I'm sure one of the gurus who lurk here will come up with a more complete

Geoff.

Good point! :-)

A better solution is to just install an AC-4R in the power supply, make
sure the Jones connector is pushed fully on (they really ARE tough to
remove when fully engaged), and get on the air!

Another answer for the connector question is to make sure that the cable
isn't "hanging" from the connector, e.g., lay it on the table, lace it
to a bundle or to the transmitter ground wire.

the first thing everyone needs to take into consideration is this.

Do you want to put the protection inside the power supply?

Or inside the rig?

the problem with a loose connector cooking the radio would not have
been solved by a circuit in the power supply.

on the other hand...

a pcb wired inside the rig must have the dimensions to fit EVERY Drake
rig.

To use such a design would require a major rewire of the power socket,
adding the new pcb, and then rewiring the rig.

WHile it's known that loosing the bias will damage the tubes (PA) is
the solution worth the effort?

I must have missed this question..

The Lower SSB filter is at the "bottom" of the "U-shaped" bracket and
the USB is at the open end in the T-4X(any).

The TR-4 doesn't really have Upper and Lower filters as the produced SSB
changes depending upon the band because of the mixing scheme used. They
ARE however marked U and L! The U filter is closest to the bandswitch.

-2.4L and -2.4U. The lower sideband filter is used in the LSB position

That would work, there would be a pulse of high current, but would fade
pretty quickly as the filaments cooled.

I'd rather avoid a relay, since it's mechanical, and the one time it HAS
to work, it doesn't! It should only have to work ONCE, but to be worth
the trouble it's gotta work!

On the other hand, a relay could just as easily be put in the primary
side, and would serve to protect the switch in the transmitter as well.

I looked at this some years ago. I had a design started that would
drop the filiament voltage off the rig. Kind of hard to run a tube
w/o a heater. You would have a 2-3 second delay looking for bias
voltage, and if not there relay off the filaments. Looking in the rig
would quickly tell you what was going on. I kind of like to play with
the low voltages myself. 73,

All, in case anyone is interested, its snowing in New England. I already
have two feet of snow on the ground and the in-coming Nor'easter storm is
dropping about 12" of snow per hour, the current temperature is 6 degrees
with a 30 MPH wind.

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Stop by, I have plenty of shovels.

Don't forget the Drake Technical net today at 3PM.

By then I should be up to my eyeballs in snow. ;o)

Has anyone looked at
http://bama.sbc.edu/
? I downloaded a few from there. They are image files with
a djvu
extention. It seems to be nonstandard but there is a
program for displaying
the files. One can also print from this program--which I
have done. dONE
IT so that I could scan and ocr them to grab the text out of
them. Have not
yet evaluated any of the final ocr results.

Since originals

Re: [drakelist] ac4 write up

2007-12-16 Thread Boyd Van Horn
How about running the bias through the coil of an in line small relay. It is
held in any time the negative voltage is present. The present final cathode to
ground circuit would be run through the normally closed relay points. Loss of
any bias current and the relay cuts off the finals. Boyd W0BUW

Mike,

I understand, and perhaps "Crowbar" is the wrong term: there's certainly
enough technical expertise on the list to suggest a viable circuit.

Here's my idea: if bias drop below 50% of normal, then we could trigger
an SCR to short the AC source and blow the fuse.
