[EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- I want to echo Don's comments. I've been licensed since 1974, not long to sum and a over a lifetime for others. I've worked in communications over 20 years specifying, purchasing, designing, installing, and operating various types of equipment including HF antenna's. Oh I use G5RV's at home, the Office, I recommended them to emergency services organizations, and used them during emergencies and disasters. However, when I stop thinking that I didn't have the room to install an 80 meter fullwave loop and listen to my friend and mentor George Runyan, WB6YEC actually building it, the light came on. Remember it doesn't have to be shaped square, or rectangular. There are many possibilities. We used 14 ga stranded wire, 450 ohm ladder line, and suspending it 32' above the ground using old well pipe for supports, the results were beyond my expectations. No it doesn't tune 160 as a balanced antenna but it work's just fine when I short the ladderline then configuring it as end fed using the loop as a top capacity hat. The signal reports on 160, well, the comments have been Best Signal out of San Diego on 160 No its not the Holy Grail but for my many years of experience as antenna's go, the 80 meter fullwave loop using 450 ohm ladderline has my vote. 73's and I wish you all the best, John N. [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- It is almost all band but my favorite is a 20 meter DEZ at a total length of 86 feet fed with 450 ohm line. I would not hesitate to go against any triband bean with this on 20. Great on that band it is. It worked very well on 40, 30, and 10. I shorted the feed line and laid out a few radials for 160 well ... it worked after a fashion. It was fine on 80 but it didn't seem to get out the yard on 17, 15, and 12. I solved that problem by building a 15 meter DEZ which worked well on 30-10 meters. I hope that gives you a few ideas. 73, Mike WA5POK 343 countries es 9 band DXCC with wire antennas. One of my previous QTH's in town had a very small lot. I installed a 10 ft mast on the eave of my cape house style house and installed an inverted vee fed with 450 ohm line. The dipole was about 130 ft total length. I had to play around with the feedline length some but was able to tune all bands 80 through 10. For 160 meters I fed the ends of the 450 ohm line tied together and tuned it as a top loaded vertical. To do this I also installed a counterpoise. It all worked very well. I want to do the same thing here at my present QTH but currently lack the supports to have the feedline drop near the shack. One of these days I will come up with something. 73, Gary -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net -- -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

Re: [drakelist] Request Drake users experience, opinions and comments for an all band HF Antennas
[EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Karl, Sounds like a 160meter inverted L might be an option. BUT, you could start by visiting a website of an antenna guru, specifically, W4RNL, or buying his books available through MFJ. Please note, don't be overly swayed by the results of antenna modeling results. They are merely one source of guidance and rarely does one know the influence of site specitics (e.g. ground conductivity, house wiring, siding, gutters, etc.). It pays to ask around but make sure you find out if an antenna is installed as intended or not, and also what the particular installation is like. One of the most controversial antennas is the G5RV which is highly susceptable to deviations from a perfect installation. In other words, bend it into an inverted V, mount it close to the ground, run the feedline parallel to one leg of the flat top, etc. and you may get good or bad results, don't know until you try. So start with theory, and then blend it with real world, correct installation examples. Good luck. Oh yes, you have to install the antenna in bad weather for it to work best. Snow, rain, sleet, high wind, all contribute to a better performing antenna. Not sure I even know what it is like to install an antenna in nice weather. But, you can be sure if I schedule antenna work, it will be nasty and windy that day. Sort of like the Hamvention, you know one day out of three will have bad weather but the rest will be fine. 73, EvanBRBRBR**BRCreate a Home Theater Like the Pros. Re: [drakelist] Request Drake users experience, opinions and comments for an all band HF Antennas
Don Cunningham [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Karl, You will get as many answers to your query as there are amateurs on the reflector, hi hi. Knowing which band is MOST important would be helpful to answering. 160m, for example, is a very particular band for antennas actually working. You can load a wet noodle with a tuner, but it may not transmit. I spend a lot of time on 160m and we have guys stop by all the time with the proverbial my 80m antenna loads just fine here, I can hear you all just great (most run 1.5 kw in our group), but I just can't understand why you can't hear me over the noise. The only thing we have found to work is a full sized dipole or inverted vee fed with ladder line (I prefer 300 ohm from the Wireman, as it doesn't seem to be effected by rain or ice as bad as 450 ohm, but that's a personal preference.). Your L4B won't do 160m (or I should say my stock one won't, hi), so that may not be a concern for you. I never got the inverted L to work well for me, on any band, as I didn't put down a good enough ground/radial system either, Karl. I think it would work alright, but would DEFINITELY need the ground system. The Hustler verticals seem to work well with elevated radials on 40m and up. Just some ramblings, Karl. Good luck in your quest. 73, Don, WB5HAK - Original Message - From: Karl Corder [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, March 30, 2008 4:19 PM Subject: [drakelist] Request Drake users experience, opinions and comments for an all band HF Antennas Karl Corder [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- After having my current antenna removed due to a proposed house addition, I am ready to Install another antenna, but would like for it to be a optimum antenna so I don't have to keep experimenting ie. fooling around with them. neil [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Another sort of intangible issue has to do with the ground conductivity in your area, especially with vertical antennas, but probably with others as well. For example, I have been very satisfied with the performance of a windom antenna. It's not up very high, and the two legs aren't even 180-degrees apart due to the limitations of tree locations, but I do live on the coast, across the street from a salt marsh. I'm sure that contributes to its performance in some way. OTOH, when I set up a better version of the same antenna (higher, straighter) at my in-laws place on the volcanic island of Hawaii, it didn't begin to compare. Karl Corder [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Neil, that is going to be one of my problems specially if I use a vertical as the ground here is Dolomite (rock), when we moved here I noticed on the maps that there were a lot of swamps and that was because the Rochester area where we live is on rock. Re: [drakelist] Request Drake users experience, opinions and comments for an all band HF Antennas
Steve Berg [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- I have a hillside lot here that is on the smallish side. I once tried a Hustler vertical up on a 30 foot mast on the rooftop. I used some slotted PVC pipe to insulate the vertical from the mast. I took rotor cable, and made 4 radials, one for each of my insulated steel guy wires. I cut the insulation on the rotor cable and snipped out a section of wire so that I had reasonably well tuned radial wires for each of the HF bands from 40 to 10 meters. I did not have enough length for 80 meter quarter wave radials with this setup, but did make some contacts on 80 with it. I had to use a tuner since I had no way to adjust the vertical while it was in position. It worked out very well. My first contact was in the old Yugoslavia on 15 meters with the 5 watts from a Heath HW-9. It did very well with the National NCX-5 also. Once you lift a vertical an appreciable portion of a wavelength above even lousy ground, the radials tend to become a ground plane and shield the antenna from the lossy ground below. I did worry a lot about lightning, but had no strikes. You might want to try something like this at your QTH. 73, Steve WA9JML -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

Karl Corder [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Gary, thank you very much for your comment. Actually, before my antenna came down I was using a dipole fed with 450 ohm line into an MFJ antenna tuner but no balun. It worked pretty good for only being up 26 feet but since I had to move it and my wife said there wasn't anyway that she was going to help me put it up again( t exciting), I thought I would ask around and see if there is anything better and easier to install. I do have a brand new G5RV that i have never used and is still in the box. I may use this antenna but don't know yet. When we first moved here from calif. we rented a house and I put up a dipole that really was a inverted V cut for 20 meters and I made 600 ohm line and an antenna tuner. The tunner looked awful but worked great. I used a tr4 and could not believe how well it 'got out on 20 meters, we had sandy soil at that location and it wasn't but about 22 feet off the ground. [drakelist] Request Drake users experience, opinions and comments for an all band HF Antennas
Gary Poland [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Karl, One of my previous QTH's in town had a very small lot. 73, Gary -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --
