[DXR] 30 Mtr(10.1 Mhz) Band fer USA Hams....
A week or so ago I asked on the reflector(s) as to the beginning date fer the 30 Mtr Band. I recv'd mni es varied answers. I appreciate the responses frm mni hams even tho sum answers were incorrect. According to NC1L, N4KG, & others, the correct starting date fer hams in the USA was OCTOBER, 1982. In some other countries the date was earlier than in the USA. The 30 Mtr Band is a beauty es is a real pleasure to use as a CW only band. Tnx to all, 73 es gd DXing, SAH, K4KU http://www.qsl.net/k4ku

Re: [DXR] anthrax & direct qsling
Hello Dennis, I don't think it will be a problem. The main thing is to make sure you put your full name, address and callsign on the envelope. Also you probably will want to put the callsign of the station you are addressing. That way we (person receiving envelope) here in the US will know who it is from. I have not heard of any other recommendations or requirements. Perhaps others will be able to inform you Dennis. [DXR] Kathmandu ("Dead Band") Report
I turned on my radio today after darkness ended work on my 30 meter antenna and listened on 12 meters at 0115z. I didn't hear a single ham station on. Other than the 24930 beacons, that is: JA2IGY/B and RR9O/B both had fair signals (RR9O must have some sort of transmiiter problem. VK6RBP is off due to antenna damage). That's generally a good sign of a central/west Asian opening. So, time for my semi-regular night CQ's there. After a slow start (UA0LCZ @ 0128) and calling some CQ's towards Africa (ZS6DN/B had a good signal) W7NUT/KL7 called and also said that the band should be open but my signal was the only one that he was hearing. Then things changed: At 0146z SM0HRP called at his local 2:46 am. At 0155 VU2LX called (we had also worked the day before at 0125z). Then at 0159 9N7RB called. I had a nice chat with Lawrence. He said that he was happy because after 4 months of rain his monsoon season was finally over. I said that perhaps now he could try more low band operation. He didn't say of any activity below 30 meters, but thought that he had a pretty good 30M antenna. He said that he was trying to work some stateside stations on that band but was not having very much success (time to finish work on my 30M antenna). He then had to go to work... The moral is, "Don't simply ignore a dead band," and "Thanks for the NCDXF Beacons!" 73, Bill K0HA DX-NEWS: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives available at http://www.mail-archi

Charly, I use one of the TelNet locations for more local DX spots, however, there are usually only a few users signed on and almost all of the TelNet services send spots to Internet DX Clusters. Using DX Monitor in conjunction with DX Viewer allows you to filter spots and you can view spots from only W3 or W6, etc. 73, George K3GV DX: Long may it live ! If it isn't LOGic it isn't LOGging ! [DXR] A Real Find for DXers Part II
Dear Fellow DXers, A few days ago I posted a brief note about a book about Dxing that I feel is a real find. During past few days I have received numerous e-mail responses loaded with questions that require answers. Hopefully, the following will answer all of your questions: The book is entitled " DXing 101x" and it is written by Rod Dinkins. Full details including ordering, cost, domestic and international shipping costs, chapter outlines and chapter content samples can be found at URL: http://ac6v.com/DXSAMPLE.htm (By the way, this is one great Web site and it is loaded with useful information and very, very well organized.) With respect to AC6V's book...When I mentioned that it was comb bound, I meant that the pages are held together with a plastic spiral comb. AC6V had a great idea when he used this binding method. Since there is new information coming out every day, AC6V's book is always current since it is updated on a weekly basis. In short when you order a book, you receive a new current edition. Up to the day changes are posted on his Web site...so you can constantly update your book. (Naturally, using this method, you cannot get a more definitive up-to-date book on the subject of DXing.) As for the information contained in the book. I really don't know where to start, except to say that I was completely amazed with the thoroughness and sophistication of the content. There is just about everything you can imagine in this book. No, I am not kidding! The book is extremely well organized and written. (Mr. Dinkins is a former technical writer.) The book does cover a wide variety of subjects, for example I had never heard of a Cricket or Pulser for tuning a linear amplifier. Briefly, it is a duty cycle method of tuning an amplifier which reduces component stress, overheating and excessive power supply loading. Another example of subject variety is when QSLing a country known for its poor return rate -- have a friend of a friend address it in the native language e.g., Iran's language is Farsi. This worked for me. Yet another example is tracking the operating habits of an operator in a fairly rare country and being all tuned up and snagging em on the first call. In addition the book contains a prefix list (250+) all on one sheet of paper. Also has CQ and ITU zone maps. Unlike older DX books, this guide has frequent reference (with URL's) to access the latest DX news, on-line logs, online callbooks and lots of DX software. Perfect for the experienced DXer new to the Internet. DX telnet and international DX spotting networks are also discussed. Although there is a money back guarantee I can't imagine anyone giving this book up. My guess is that even if you have been a ham for decades, you will find this book to be a real treasure. I have ordered two more books for ham friends. One of my pals has already received his copy and loves it and the other friend has not yet received his copy but I am sure he will say, "It's great!" (Both of my ham pals have been licensed since the early 60's.) Mr. Dinkins, the author of this fine work, is a member of the ARRL DXCC Honor Roll and when/if you ever talk to this gentleman you will quickly ascertain why he has been so successful in making contacts. In short, he just know the hobby through and through. If you have occasion to chat with him, get ready for a real treat! I hope this answers all of your questions. Very 73 and Good DX. Courtney L. Are you speaking of SSB? 9M's do seem rare on 10M SSB although I do have some QSL's for QSO's in the 1980's. There is LOTS of CW activity on 10M by 9M2AX, 9M2TO, and contest / DXpedition operations from 9M6NA, 9M6OO, 9M6AAC, almost yearly in Nov. around the CQ WW CW DX Contest. [DXR] Malaysia and 10m. !
It is a fact that the 9M's, East or West-Malaysia, don't really like 28 Mhz. All thru my years of Ham Radio never a station from the Malaysia's was on 28 Mhz at the right time (for us I mean !!!). [I even got 9M6 in 50 Mhz but not on 28] If one of you is a 9M please let us know if you would like to pile-up in 10m. for a change. [DXR] A real find for DXers.
Dear Fellow DXers, First, I would like to thank all of you who recently came to my aid in answering my question on how best to acquire a QSL card from Libya (5A1A). Next, I recently acquired a great manual on DX. I can't believe all of the information that is contained in this book. The book is entitled "AC6V's DXing 101x." and is written by Rod Dinkins. [You can order the book from the ac6v.com Web site. The Web site is still another story...It is a veritable fountain of amateur reference material ! ] As a result of perusing the contents of the book, I have ordered two more as gifts for fellow ham friends...(Both of these friends have been hams since the 60's.) I am, simply, amazed with the plethora of valuable information contained in this book. On a couple of occasions I have called Mr. Dinkins and sought further sagacious console, and he has really taken the time to answer all of my questions...talk about a nice guy! I recommend this book for the ham who is just starting DX as well as the seasoned amateur who has already passed the 300 mark. There appears to be an abundance of material in the book for everybody. One additional note: It is obvious this book has/is a labor of love for Mr. Dinkins. I learned these books are comb bound and printed in quantities of 10 to insure all the latest changes to the book are implemented in a timely manner. The information in this DX Bible is really complete and more current than any other publication I have found. 73 de A J 6 Z Courtney L. Average daily sunspot numbers were off 87 points from last week and nearly 133 points below the week before. Average daily solar flux has dropped nearly 57 points from last week and 82 points from the week before. Geomagnetic conditions were relatively stable this week, with the average daily planetary A index down 18.8 points. October 4 was fairly active, with a planetary A index of 19 and K indices as high as 5. October 8 and 9 were unsettled with planetary A indices of 15 on both days, and a planetary K index as high as 4. The latest forecast shows solar flux at 170 on Friday through Sunday, then rising to 185 by Wednesday. Holographic images of the far side of the sun show a large sunspot region that should appear around Monday or Tuesday. Look for a big jump in solar flux by next Friday, October 19 when the sunspot group moves toward optimal position for influencing earth. For a treatise on helioseismology, which is used to sense the sunspots on the sun's far side, look on the web for http://science.msfc.nasa.gov/ssl/pad/solar/p_modes.htm . This technique is used to generate the holographic images that tell us what is about to move around from the far side and into view. Look at http://spaceweather.com/glossary/farside.html for information on helioseismic holography. Sunspot numbers for October 4 through 10 were 231, 160, 181, 154, 130, 99 and 133 with a mean of 155.4. 10.7 cm flux was 186.5, 176.9, 180.4, 172.7, 171.2, 176.4 and 178.7, with a mean of 177.5, and estimated planetary A indices were 19, 9, 8, 4, 15, 15 and 8 with a mean of 11.1. /EX DX-NEWS: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives available at http://www.mail-archi

Unfortunately, I have heard that IRC's are not accepted by the Libyan Postal System and that US currency is certainly not recommended. Can anyone shed any light on my dilemma? Re: [DXR] 30 Meters Band(10.1Mhz)
Sah, In the USA we gained access to 10.100-10.109 and 10.115-10.150 MHz, the original 30 meter band, which occurred at 2200 UTC on 28 October 1982. Some countries already had privileges on the band before the USA had same. 73, Joe, W1JR At 08:43 PM 10/9/01 -0400, sherman a. harrison wrote: >Can any one tell me the effective starting date(dd/mm/yy) fer Qso's on the >30Mtr Band(10.1Mhz)? > >Tnx es 73, > >SAH, K4KU > >http://www.qsl.net/k4ku > > >DX-NEWS: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems >http://njdxa.org/dx-news >DX-CHAT: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems >http://njdxa.org/dx-chat > >To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Archives available at http://www.mail-archi DX-NEWS: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives available at http://www.mail-archi

[DXR] Travel with radios...Answers
To date, several responses... all positive. Couple of guys traveled in Carribean ok with no hassles at check in with radios in carry ons. One famous DXer traveled ok with carry-on with lots of wire and batteries, etc. Another made bright suggestion of checking with the airline before departure. No citations of folks being stopped and given extra searches. I will report more as more come in. 73, Charly K4VUD _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp DX-NEWS: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives available at http://www.mail-archi
[DXR] Carrying radios via airlines??
Hello Charley I just returned from 10 days in Costa Rica. I had in my carry-on bag a TS -570, power supply, and laptop computer. Out bound from Kansas City International, no problems, put the whole bag right thru the X-ray machine. I told them what it was before I put it thru the machine. Coming out of Costa Rica, they hand checked carry on bags twice but no problems getting through. Going thru Atlanta, had to take everything out of the bag to be X-Rayed separately, then a second check in another area of the laptop specifically. Bill, AK0A, shipped his radio and computer in his baggage and it arrived in Costa Rica just fine. 73 my friend, Alan [EMAIL PROTECTED] TI2/KI7WO and V31GC DX-NEWS: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives available at http://www.mail-archi

For a team that's only been on the air for 5 days now, they seem to be doing a good job. I worked them on my last needed band/mode (75 SSB) this morning, with only single-element antennas. I hope the Europeans are getting a good shot. There is some interesting reading on their web page: http://www.kragujevac.co.yu/3d2/vesti/index.asp Good luck to all those who still need them. [DXR] A note to JA ops abt QSL adr
Please spread the following to all QSLers, especially JA ops. Looking at a DX address in qrz.com has led some ops to mistakenly address their QSLs to me. I operated in Thailand, but my QSL address is in the USA. However, qrz.com shows my address correctly in the USA but the line of information just under my address says "Thailand" to indicate the country where I operated HS0ZCW. I have received several QSLs in envelops marked "mistakenly routed to Thailand" because the last line of the adr said "Thailand" altho it said USA on the line just above. Long way around saying watch out for the adr given in qrz.com . 73, Charly K4VUD _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp DX-NEWS: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-news DX-CHAT: Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX NEWS items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives available at http://www.mail-archi

For years I have said that I don't accept anyone's claim of DXCC prowess unless the ARRL has counted their QSL for the mode and band intended (and then published it in tin QST or the DXCC yearly update publication). Furthermore, I just cringe when I hear someone say "Oh, I've worked them all but I don't QSL" or " I have all the QSLs but I have never submitted them to ARRL." We can all make the above statements to some degree. What about all those P5RS7 QSLs we have from North Korea or the 7O1YGF from South Yemen to name a few. And then there are others like HM0DX (where did my $$ go when they got to the N. Korean Box number?). Also XZ9A, XY0Q and XY0Z etc. come to mind. The biggest mess is the "Not in Log". I hear guys everyday think they worked someone (when I hear another call then their's). If they try to get a QSL, maybe they would tone down their claims. One of the more common reasons for no QSL is all the pirates. 3A2DX is on almost weekly and is a know pirate. The there are the guys who insist on calling on the operations frequency when he/she is listening up. Not only do some think they had a QSO but often someone who is tired of the lid just drops in a report on the frequency and the lid clears off thinking he made a QSO. This is one of the most. Then there is the QSL caper. If you don't have a QSL, there is no guarantee that you either had a contact or even that you maybe in the log. Finally, there are all the illegitimate operators, rightfully or wrongly, according to ARRL. Simple misunderstandings or none or incomplete documentation mostly brought on by all the trouble with Don Miller etc. in the 1960's. This documentation problem has been exacerbated by the new single-band DXCC's. In the last few years I have had many QSLs rejected under the "unauthorized operation" or "no documentation received" clause on my DXCC credit slip. Most notable recent rejections I have had are: 3V8VT on 20-meters by K5VT TN2FB (3 bands rejected!) 3V8BB (yes for 17 meters) but TS7N on 17 does count! T55C in Somalia 3W8CW (wow, everyone must have worked Tom) TT8OBO ( non-amateur license..whatever that means) Z6AIS/7P8 And there is the Ploubalay rule of rejection. I think this means any QSL issued by HH2HM/F! And on and on...(Not to mention that I just submitted a TT8JE QSL on my last submission!) Fortunately for me, in most cases I had cards from others that did count for that entity. This brings up the REAL PROBLEM. If we can't have access to the OFFICIAL ARRL list of disqualified operations, what are we to do? One thing that I have done is to always keeping working as many different stations in each entity until the ARRL gives me credit. This will be easier now (although still expensive and painful) since all the single band DXCCs are now available (except 30-meters which has been authorized by the BOD but probably not available until sometime in 2001). The other thing is we could all start making up our own master LIST. This could be done by anyone on the reflector to just list there rejections for everyone to see. Soon, we would have a collection that could be a guide line for others. It would not only save time, rejections and $$ but it may also be a guide for those who want to pursue the DX station in question to obtain and submit to ARRL the required paper work. [DXR] Good Guy award to Bill NC1L (re EP2MKO valid QSLs)
Note: to cut to the chase - this posting includes lavish praise for Bill Moore/NC1L at the DXCC Desk and some info which may be useful to others submitting QSLs from EP2MKO for DXCC credit. === Not that Bill needs to hear kudos and other words of praise, but let me say I was more than a little thrilled to receive an email response from him this morning from a query I sent over the weekend. And .. he responded with both the desired outcome and good humor! For those who may run into the same problem ... during the Northwest DX Convention in Seattle, WA I submitted a DXCC endorsement application with an EP2MKO QSL (rcvd via UA6HCW/RU6FZ). When I received my DXCC award status results by mail this past Saturday, I noticed that the EP2MKO card had been rejected with the comment: *Ploubalay QSL Invalid* This apparently referred to QSLs sent from a QSL Service in Ploubalay, France which may have been routinely rejected in the past although cards direct from the UA6HCW/RU6FZ route seem to be okay. Not knowing this, I sent an email to Bill asking for a bit more explanation as I didn't understand what "Ploubalay" means .. since I don't speak Klingon or Tagalog or whatever language it was supposed to be. Short story long ... Bill (NC1L) responded early this morning admitting that every once in awhile an error can occur .. and that he liked my Klingon reference. :-) And, he forwarded updated PDF files showing my corrected DXCC Award Status. So, not only do I have an email from him saying all is well, I also have the "proof" that he (and the DXCC Desk) have actually made the necessary corrections. I'm a happy camper . :-) 73, Sandy [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Pierre: Please let me know what I am dragging my feet on? Please keep in mind that although documentation is occasionally sent to ARRL, there have been a number of times it has not arrived here. 12M has been open in excellent shape in the stateside evenings (0200 - 0300z) to Western Asia and Eastern Europe lately. Stations from EX, EY, UN, VU, 9N1 (20 watts into a dipole), 3W9, etc have been worked during that time period. It seems to only suffer from the lack of activity during that time period. SB PROP @ ARL $ARLP041 ARLP041 Propagation de K7VVV ZCZC AP41 QST de W1AW Propagation Forecast Bulletin 41 ARLP041 >From Tad Cook, K7VVV Seattle, WA October 5, 2001 To all radio amateurs SB PROP ARL ARLP041 ARLP041 Propagation de K7VVV Solar flux and sunspot numbers were lower this week. This is no surprise, because the flux had reached a new high for this solar cycle during the previous week. Average daily sunspot numbers dropped over 45 points and solar flux was down over 25 points. Indicators that did not drop were those tied to geomagnetic stability. The average daily planetary A index increased by 16 points to 29.6. The most active days were Monday through Wednesday, when the planetary A index was 50, 43 and 53. The planetary K index reached a high of 7 on Wednesday, indicating a geomagnetic storm. For higher latitudes the peak day for geomagnetic activity was Tuesday, when Alaska's College A index was 82, and the College K index reached 8. The geomagnetic activity was caused by a series of solar wind disturbances. In addition to absorption of HF signals over high latitude paths, there were some impressive aurora displays. Check http://spaceweather.com/aurora/gallery_01oct01.html for some dramatic photos. Current predictions project solar flux decreasing to 185 on Friday, then increasing to 190 on Saturday and 195 on Sunday and Monday. Geomagnetic indices should be quiet to unsettled. The next peak in solar flux is projected around October 22 or 23. Flux values are expected to rise above 200 after October 14 and above 250 after October 19. September 30 ended the third quarter of 2001. Now it is time to look at quarterly averages for sunspot numbers and solar flux. The numbers begin with the first quarter of 1999 and end with the third quarter of 2001. Average daily sunspot numbers were 96.1, 147.2, 137.9, 163.1, 168.9, 190.8, 187.4, 145, 147.3, 164.8 and 170.4. Average daily solar flux was 136.7, 145, 157.6, 175.2, 180.5, 182.9, 181.9, 173.3, 164.4, 166.7 and 175.5. Even after the recent record shattering daily solar flux for the current cycle, it still appears that solar flux had a broad peak throughout the first nine months of last year. But this year the trend was up, with higher average daily numbers in each quarter for both solar flux and sunspot numbers. The monthly averages of daily numbers over the past few months show a steady rise in activity. Average daily sunspot numbers for July, August and September were 124.6, 159.4 and 229.1, and average daily solar flux was 131.3, 163.1 and 233.8. The 2001 Oceania DX SSB Contest is this weekend. [DXR] TT8 problems
After working 3 TT8 stations on 18 MHZ and getting the QSLs, none of them are good for DXCC. The reason, No documentation received at ARRL DXCC Desk. TT8DX and TT8JE, which have been on recently are not being accepted for DXCC. F5OGL is the manager for TT8DX. If anyone can get word to these stations that their QSLs are no good for DXCC unless proper documentation is received at ARRL HQ DXCC Desk. Bill Moore told me that many others fromTT8 are not being accepted due to this problem. 73, John, N4MM
