Re: [Dx4win] Updating/overriding country prefixes in DX4Win.

2016-10-17 Thread Duane Calvin
Yes, that’s the “exception” to the country list that I was describing. It is
callsign, date, and country specific. If the exception is lost, so is the
unique mapping for that QSO.

I believe this is QSO / Country specific, not a overall change to country
mapping for country prefixes

open the QSO you want to change in the QSO window, then hover over the 'country

Re: [Dx4win] FT4JA not showing "W" in Country window?

2016-03-30 Thread Duane Calvin
Yes, FT/J, but if you're keeping your country file up to date, it should
fill that in automatically for you. If you're ever in question, just tab to
the prefix slot and press "F1" and you'll get the list of countries. Enter
"Juan. . . " and by the time you're that far, it is displaying the correct
prefix. Hope this helps.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN, LoTW, and the DXCC Award

2016-02-29 Thread Duane Calvin
That is the reason I always used "ac5aa20160229.adi" (for example) as the
upload file and "lotwreport20160229.adi" as the confirmation report file
downloaded from LoTW. Completely different names that are more difficult to
confuse. Not that I haven't done that, maybe once!

There is another, more sinister possibility. If you worked them, and didn't
expressly do a save of the new data, then MS applied updates, causing a
shutdown without saving, that can bite your log bigtime. I've gotten so as
soon as an entry is made, I do a CTRL-S to save the log, and often a CTRL-B

Re: [Dx4win] Automating Internet/packet connections

2015-12-13 Thread Duane Calvin
As Jim, AD1C, pointed out recently, as long as your cursor is in the lower
part of the packet window, just hit "Enter" three times and you will come up
to the "enter callsign" prompt from the telnet server. If you program your
callsign into one of the F-key's, then all you need to connect is three
"Enter's", and one F-key. Hope this helps.

To connect to a telnet packet cluster is normally many steps:
Right-click in the packet window and select Internet Connection Select my
telnet host from a list Click a function key to login with my callsign Click
another function key to sh/dx

Is there any way to make all of this happen with a single function key? The
bit that is stumping me is that there is no apparent keyboard shortcut for
Internet Connection.

I use DX4win while mobile, and occasionally have to reset the connection due
to cellular coverage. All those steps (*especially* the right-click!) force
me to pull over to reset. If I could just reach over and punch a button
that would be oh so much better.

Thanks in advance,

I had also problems with clusters in the past. Clusters' connection braked
after some time. I used VE7CC's client program which has a function to keep the
connection alive. Dx4win was connected on this program and I could watch the
spots. After a lot of time I found that it was a problem in my adsl
router/modem as when I changed this, I can connect to the clusters directly
without a problem. I don' t know if this is your problem but just in case.

By the way it would be very good for all of us to use the ve7cc program.
If I made a logging program right now from scratch, I wouldn't include a
cluster interface but just a connection to ve7cc (beside this I wouldn't make a
rig control routine also but just a connection to omnirig). My problem with
ve7cc, is that many times I get bored to run another program and make the
connection routine also. A nice solution would be if a future version of dx4win
has an option to run ve7cc and connect to it automatically. Maybe there is an
external program do this. Any info?

[Dx4win] Cluster connects but no updates after

2015-11-14 Thread Duane Calvin
Hi all - I have a peculiar problem that has cropped up. I can't tell if
it's due to an MS update, or from my installing the latest Norton Security
software. All has been working fine for some time, but as of the last
couple of weeks (roughly since I did the Norton install) I can connect to a
cluster, do a SH/DX to list the last series of spots, but then nothing after
that and I lose connection. Now, I've got my spots limited to 5-land, and
there are not a lot of people actively spotting in 5-land, but somehow the
connection gets lost. I don't see any disconnect messages unless I try to
send a spot, or do another SH/DX in which case there is no response, and
eventually I get a message that the connection is closed. I've looked
through the Norton settings but probably don't know what to look for. If
anyone can give me some hints, I'd sure appreciate it.

Re: [Dx4win] RTTY with MMTTY

2015-10-23 Thread Duane Calvin
Alt-A allows you to post a spot for the station currently listed in DX4WIN.
Actually, the current method only requires that the spotter put RTTY in the
text field for the spot for DX4WIN to know it's a RTTY spot and cue your
rig. But if you're using a Flex, and going thru N4PY's software, I'm not
sure how that works. Since I jump around on spots from mode to mode, I'd
prefer it not ignore the mode.

Hi Dave,

I am aware of the issue with DX4WIN selecting either CW or SSB in most cases
when you click on a spot... I was hoping there was some way Paul could shut
off that feature so the radio mode wouldn't change when clicking on a spot.
That would solve the problem for all radios Most people know mode they
are working so that feature wouldn't be necessary in most cases, like a RTTY
contest for example.

How do you add a spot using Alt-A? If am using the bandmap to click on a
spot how does Alt-A figure into the picture??

Thanks for the help,

Dennis,

Unless the spot has RTTY in the Remarks, DX4WIN has no way of knowing which
mode to put the radio in. In that situation it can only go by the CW Cutoff
frequency for each band that you set in Preferences and it will either
select CW or SSB. However, you will find that if RTTY is in the remarks
section of the spot, DX4WIN will change your mode to RTTY. So the answer to
your question is that it depends on the spot. If you add a spot using
DX4WIN (Control A) and your radio is in RTTY mode, it will add RTTY to the
Remarks section automatically. Have fun.

Hello to all us DX4WIN lovers,

With the help of Jim's app notes I was able to get DX4WIN working with MMTTY
this morning. Very cool... It does everything I need except I still cannot
click on a spot in the bandmap and have the radio stay in RTTY mode, but,
that's not such a big deal to me because now I can click on the call, name
and rst of the DX station in the RTTY window and that info gets filled into
the QSO window, that is a big deal!

I've been a ham for over 55 years and I'm just now discovering RTTY, hi,

I'll probably stay with DX4WIN till I croak.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Status -- Observations

2015-10-07 Thread Duane Calvin
Strange comments in the last couple postings since I don't think I saw
anyone asking Paul to do work on DX4WIN as a free gift. I think we all
expect to pay if Paul were to work to include more recent rigs (FLEX is one
I'd like to see), modes, and some of the often-requested features. If we
all thought DX4WIN was a loser, we'd have moved a long time ago, regardless
of the pain. In many ways it still does more for me than some other
options, but now I have to work around some of its shortcomings more than
ever before. I'd happily pay for an update that solved those, and I think
most others would too, tho I can only speak for me.

Subject: [Dx4win] DX4WIN Status -- Observations

First -- to answer AD1C's question I believe 8.05 was released in January
2011. Before that 8.02 was released in September 2009, 8.03 in December
2009, and 8.04 in May 2010.

Second -- to echo other similar comments I am a very long time user of
DX4WIN, since the late '90s. The fact is DX4WIN still works and does what I
need it to do and does it efficiently and reliably. But, my expectations are
simple: keep track of logs and QSL cards, help me track DXCC, and be my
day-to-day real time spot processing, logging, and rig control system. The
log management use is not to be underestimated: between my K7ZO log, my YN5Z
log, and NK7U's logs, the later for whom I have been the manager for 20+
years, I have about 400,000 QSOs to keep track of and I respond to 1,500 QSL
requests a year. Certainly there are more things I use a computer for in the
hobby, but I use other software for them. I did look at Log4OM a year or so
ago as a modern version of a logging program and software suite. It
certainly does a lot more than DX4WIN but converting my logs over was going
to require a huge amount of manual work if I wanted to retain detail beyond
basic QSO data. Yes, some of the Log4OM features could be added to DX4WIN.
But, this leads to the next point.

Third -- if we really want Paul to add features to DX4WIN we need to make it
worth his while. Someone's comment mention how using DX4WIN has saved them
from years of upgrade bills. However, this also means that Paul does not
have a financial incentive to spend time on DX4WIN. In other words, we are
getting what we pay for -- nothing. (Other than AD1C's amazing work which
earned him deserved recognition at Dayton.) So we should not complain. And
there are some among us who regularly spend way more on various pieces of
station hardware who would vocally object to a annual software maintenance
fee. The N1MM+ development team, who are motivated by something other than
money, have lowered our sense of the value and worth of software. That is
fine for them, but it is not fair to expect all other developers to follow
the same path. I have no idea how many DX4WIN users there are, nor how much
they are willing to pay for a new release of DX4WIN addressing the top
requests. I would encourage those that want improvements to DX4WIN to rally
the user base and present a financial case to Paul for the work. Other than
that, perhaps there is a way to open source the code and let others add to
it. And, if Paul rationally does not want to spend time on the software
going the open source route might be a great solution for him and for us.

Just my two cents worth.

Agreed. However, understand that if you plan to move all your QSL info,
credits, etc., to a new logger, be prepared to do a lot it manually
(whatever you can't recover from LOTW award credits). That, and not finding
another logger that can present all the information I need in a very small
screen space are what has held me back from moving. I'm hoping against hope
that Paul will eventually have time to do some upgrading for new rigs, etc.

Mike/W8DN. Paul owes it to the DX4WIN community to inform us if DX4WIN has

I guess I should be more mellow. After all, I have saved a TON of money
on update fees and the program does NEARLY everything I want it to. However,
with that being said, it would REALLY be nice to know if there is ANY future
for DX4Win beyond the OUTSTANDING support by Jim (and the user community of

Along a similar line though, I imagine that any changes would probably
involve a complete rewrite in a new (i.e., different) programming language
and that would bring a whole new generation of issues, affectionately known
as bugs or undocumented features. However, it might at the same time provide
an opportunity to make DX4Win available to the Linux community as well.

I had planned to release a new DX4WIN country file this morning, but
my regression testing failed on some old Russian prefixes. I'll try
to fix the problems and get something released early this weekend.

This turned out to be a useful exercise. I found two missing prefix
mappings and one missing callsign exception. More importantly, I
found an error in my master Russian database which made all UA0H
prefixes look like UA0A. Even though the CQ zones match, the ITU
zones do NOT match, and there are contest databases that use the
Oblast, so it's important to get these right. I found a similar
mistake with UA9G prefixes a week or two ago.

I should have a new file some time Saturday.

I have the latest version of DX4WIN. I notice that it is disconnecting from
the AR cluster node on a regular basis every 7 to 8 hours or so. I do have
keepalive set and it is triggering every 5 minutes so it is probably not
DX4WIN problem but wonder if anyone might have insight as to where I might
start looking. Don't seem to be having a problem with modem, router or other
programs.

Yes, could be false, but Microsoft Security Essentials is like letting the

It is the baseline all security testing labs use as 'the worst case' to

I have had Bitdefender, rated best by testing labs, for over a year, and it
is the first site it has caught and stopped.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN shutdown error

You might be shutting down from the wrong window.  If you close the input
window that only closes the log you are operating on.  You need to shut down
from the main window - the one with the File, etc. Menus visible.   Hope this
helps.

When I try to close DX4WIN, I often find that only the input window shuts
down. The other windows (such as logbook, packet window, etc., etc.) remain
on the monitor.

I can't get rid of those windows except by using Task Manager.

When I direct Task Manager to close DX4WIN, I get the following error
message:

 An exception occurred!

Cannot focus a disabled or invisible window

I have uninstalled DX4WIN and then reinstalled it. That made no difference.

I also reinstalled the Windows 7 64 bit operating system. No difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's been ages since I had cards checked, and I know that the combination of

George, DX4WIN can only process spots against the log you have opened.
It sounds like the log are you opening contains other QSOs besides
those made in 2015. Using F8 to start your log at 01/01/2015 won't
change how the DX spots are processed. Using a date selection
(Filter | Selection) will, but you will have to manually choose this
selection each time you open your log.

Send me the .DXL file that you *think* contains only 2015 QSOs.

[Dx4win] Current manual?

2015-01-27 Thread Duane Calvin
Is there a current user's manual for DX4WIN Ver. 8.0x? I'm finding lots of
things new to me that have changed since the last level that I spent a lot
of time working with that I'd like to browse the manual about. For
instance, just worked a new band/mode/country, and the country window shows
the entry as L whereas I'm used to it saying W for worked until it
progresses to the next (C = Confirmed) level. What is L? Logged? Why
not Worked? And there are other items I'm scratching my head over trying

[Dx4win] Notfound reports after LOTW QSL import

2015-01-26 Thread Duane Calvin
I know I've seen this discussed, probably by Jim before, but I can't recall
the details. After several years of being off the air, I'm getting back on
and trying to catch the log back up with LOTW. I pulled a LOTW report of
confirmations down from the ARRL database, and included the last year of my
operating through today. When I imported it for LOTW QSL flag updates, I
received a notfound report with over 350 entries. I've checked a few of
them randomly, and the QSL listed there is in my log, including my detailed
information, so I know this data is present. What is not found, and where?
My guess was that the QSO information I was downloading didn't find a match
in my log, yet they seem to match. Some in the report have an X in the
first column - but these also seem to match OK with my log. What's wrong
with my log, and how do I correct it? (I've checked the online help but
have not found it detailed there.)

Thanks and 73,

Duane

You've mentioned how DXLab can take an ADIF file, but does that
include one's QSL status for each QSO?

Yes, if that status is exported according to the ADIF standard. ADIF
specifies QSL_SENT (I,R,Y,N), QSL_RCVD (I,R,Y,N), LotW_QSL_SENT,
LotW_QSL_RCVD, eQSL_QSL_SENT, and eQSL_QSL_RCVD.

In addition, DXKeeper can update (match) DXCC credits with QSOs by
downloading the user's DXCC Record and will create placeholder (dummy)
QSOs for any credits that do not have matching QSOs in the log (e.g.
QSOs/Cards before LotW).

 Just as an FYI:

DXLab can import a DX4WIN log. All you have to do is convert it to ADIF
and then import it. It can also compare your log with LOTW and flag all
discrepancies. When I ran a full comparison against LOTW, DXLab even
located data entry errors made by the DXCC desk when they originally
 hand-entered the QSO data.
 http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/QSOImport

DXLab can also track the USA-CA awards.
 http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/USCountyStatus

I have never had the pleasure of using a software program that is
supported as well as DXLab. It is not unusual for a question or bug or
enhancement request to be made one day and have a response available the
 next--sometimes even the same day.

The DXLab support group averages over 1,000 messages each month. This
doesn't mean the program is buggy, but that no question is too small or
repetitive to ask and receive an almost immediate response.
 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/dxlab/info

Of course there is a learning curve, but the suite is made up of eight
separate programs that talk to each other. Start with one, get
comfortable with it and then add another.

I have been a DX4WIN user for over 20 years and finally made the switch
to DXLab earlier this year. DX4WIN is adequate for 90% of the amateur
community. It is an especially good fit for new or low-activity hams.
DXLab can take care of just about everyone.

 DXLab is free from http://dxlabsuite.com/

Unfortunately, I do not recommend DX4WIN to friends given the lack of

Re: [Dx4win] Suspending voice announcements temporarily for a specific spot?

2012-10-24 Thread Duane Calvin
Another approach is to set your notifications so that you don't receive
spots originating from regions where you don't have propagation at the same
time. While that might be useful in understanding how prop is working in
general, it often results in lots of false alarms if you're waiting for that
special one to pop up. Then again, with the skimmers and worldwide
clusters as they're currently configured, you might be better off just
tuning and listening yourself! By the time it shows up, there is already a
big pileup!

Is there a way to suspend voice announcements temporarily for a specific
spot? I suspect not, but never hurts to ask.

For example, I'm getting lots of announcements for XX9THXthis morning
from the east coast on 12 and 17. It's new for me on those bands, but
those bands won't open here in Colorado for another 2 hours.

Another approach I've used is to do the work but DON'T save your log until
you've checked that everything looks like it should. Then do the save
operation. If you discover something out of kilter before doing the save,
just exit the log without saving and you'll be back where you started.
However, I have to admit that Dave's method, below, is a more secure method,
and it never hurts to have spare copies of your log saved somewhere in case
of computer crashes, etc.

This shows why it is such a good idea to save your dxl file BEFORE making
major changes to your log. It is as easy as going to FILE SAVE AS. This
opens your SAVE folder. Right click on your CALL.dxl file. A drop down menu
appears. Select SEND TO and send a copy of the dxl file to a thumb drive or
any other back up file or device. Then if you make a change and discover it
is messed up you can go back and replace the messed up dxl file with the one
you saved and start over. I do this before making any DX4WIN CTY file, etc,
updates and even before importing contest logs just in case something gets
messed up. OR, with the SAVE folder open rename the current dxl file so it
will be saved as is. Then if need be you can use the older saved dxl file to
restore DX4WIN back to where it was before you made the changes.

Re: [Dx4win] QSO Window Data

2012-08-02 Thread Duane Calvin
Remember, it's a QSO Window so all the information in that window pertains
to THAT QSO. If you're looking for your totals there, it's the wrong place.
Do you use the Country window? Maybe that information is what you're
looking for. For myself, I always keep the QSO window open along with the
Country and Same Call windows Hope this helps.

I am beginning to use the DX4WIN QSO window for more than just entering QSO
info as I have done for many years.

Am trying to make better use of the info available in the bottom row of QSO
window. Specifically, the fields indicating awards (DXCC, WAZ, etc).

Mine are all blank.

How do those get populated, and caused to appear with info in the QSO
window?

I presume info that is compiled in the DX4WIN data base should automatically
appear (such as identifying that a particular entity has been worked, and
has been recorded as worked on LOTW).

Also, what is the meaning of the fields worked cutoff and mailed cutoff
in the preferences window?

I am using Version 8.05

I am sure these questions have been asked before, but I can not find any
tutorial info anywhere. My apology to those who find this a dumb question.

Re: [Dx4win] Migrating to Win 7 from XP

2012-07-12 Thread Duane Calvin
You can install it from any directory you like on Win 7 (I elected to put it
in a secondary hard drive since having it in the C:\Programs directory cause
it to not be moved by MS Transfer Wizard and I want to explicitly back it up
now.) At any rate, all you need to do is to explicitly open the log file
from DX4WIN (File-Open), and once you do that it will know where the log
file is. I've kept mine in the \Save subdirectory by default so that I know
all the ones I need to hang on to are in one spot. But the point is that
wherever you choose to save the log file, you can point DX4WIN to it and it
will remember that location next time. (Put all your logs in the same
subdirectory and you won't have to root around for them when you need to
switch logs.) Hope that helps. (Oops, just noticed I duplicated what Jim
had already said much more eloquently - but maybe repetition helps?!)

Well I got dx4win to run on the windows 7 machine but I had to copy the
directory from the xp machine and put it in the same directory on win 7
machineprogram files. If I put it under c:\ upon execution of dx4win it
would open a window saying it could not find the log and dx4win ended up
minimized in the task bar. From that point I could not open it. So whats the

downside of having it installed in program files on win 7 and also is there
any downside in installing by copying the directory across and not using the

install process which puts entries in the registry.

Thanks,

Hi Jim...thanks for the reply. Well the directory location is
 different...on
xp it was under program files and win 7 its under c:\ so it can not locate
 the log file.

Easy, just file | Open and navigate to where the log file is NOW.
Then when you exit and restart, all will be good.

Or you can write your preferences to an INI file using the old
version, copy the directorie(s), delete DX4WIN.CFG, then merge that
INI file into your new empty configuration.

I am not sure where the path info is kept so it errors trying
to find the log and won't even start up. I think I will try just copying
 the
directory over from Xp to Win 7 and try that but if you do that instead of
regular install aren't you bypassing the Win 7 registry process and will
 that cause other issues?
