Re: [Elecraft] Any OO's on reflector?
We've been listening to Sam for a few nights now Al and there has been quite a discussion about it on the glowbugs list. Check out this link for an audio recording I made of Yosemite Sam with my K2: http://www.k6ese.com/data/yosemitesam/Yosemite_Sam_3700KHz_12-21-04_0413UTC_LSB.wav Many of us are thinking along the lines that it's some kind of Military or CIA station for training or other... If anyone has a clue there's a bunch of us interested... Check out 3700 KHz and he'll be there every 40 seconds...There's some kind of Digital burst transmission right before it... 73 Trev - K6ESE - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Monday, December 20, 2004 11:43 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Any OO's on reflector? I was up in the novice band again tonight, calling CQ (with no answers). I heard some weird signals. The weirdest is on exactly 3700.00 LSB; exactly every 40 seconds, a recording of Yosemite Sam saying, "Varmint, I'm-a gonna blow you to smithereens!!" Can anyone else hear that? But aside from this unidentified signal, there are many other mystery signals. For example, I planted myself on 3720 and halfway through my CQ I heard a weak carrier. I paused, thinking it was somebody trying to break me, but nothing. This happened on several other frequencies between 3700 and 3723 or so. It was as if I was triggering an automated station with my signal. At one point, I was lighting up these weak carriers and 'long dash' stations as I tuned down from 3720, leaving a trail of them in my wake. Does anyone know what these are? No wonder nobody goes into the Novice band anymore! What an unpleasant experience. Al W6LX ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] CW
I match the speed of the other station when in casual QSO/Ragchew mode. I generally do not tune into the novice/T+ sub-bands because I'm really lazy. I probably should, although I doubt there are many there ... there weren'd during the ARRL10, and they would have counted for more points per QSO so you'd think it would have been attractive. The novice sub-bands may be an anachronism. Hey Bill, Don't worry about being a little slow on CW. Just jump on in there. If the other guy won't slow down for you to your comfortable speed, it is his loss. RE: [Elecraft] CW
This is all great advice from everybody. Bill, I hope you do get on the air and get some 'on-the-job' training. We'll definitely slow down for ya. This brings up a very legitimate point. It used to be that the novice bands were the training ground for new hams, or even for seasoned hams wanting to practice their code speed and CW skills. As a novice, I used to love to talk to non-novices that would come into the novice band to talk to us newbies, because generally they pushed me to faster speeds than I was used to. It was good practice. Since I've upgraded, I've still tried occasionally to keep up this custom of going into the novice bands and calling a slow CQ in case there are any folks wanting to have a QSO. In fact, just in the last month, I've been doing this a lot more. However... in the last month I think I've spent a total of two solid hours calling CQ (!) without a single response. Re: [Elecraft] Is it possible to monitor digital, transmissions.
Jess (AE0CW), Thanks for your reply and offer for the cable, but I allready have my interface hooked up and working. Doug (N7BNT), I have the PSKMETER and it's a great tool for PSK. I use it also to set up the audio level for rtty, and the other digital modes. What I mean is that my Yaesu MP rig has a transmit monitor build in, so that while I am transmitting rtty, psk, cw or voice, I am able to hear it on the MP's speaker. I wanted to know if the K2 had that same feature. What I have done to listen to what I am sending is to put a "Y" connector on the Speaker out on the PC and 1 side goes to interface and then on to the mic audio in on the K2. The other side of the "Y" goes to my PC speaker. This works, but the sound was terrible, mostly hum. I since changed to a better PC speaker and it seems ok now. When I run my MP I turn my PC speakers off, just wanted to do the same with the K2. [Elecraft] Lessons I have learned from my first K-2
I thought I would share some comments concerning my personal experiences in building my first K-2. Perhaps this will help someone starting out. I am not a skilled electronics technician, and I am a bit of a klutz with mechanical stuff. Many years ago I built a Heathkit hi-fi stereo amp. I remember that I learned nothing about testing or troubleshooting from that experience. In general I really enjoyed putting the K-2 together. I learned a lot. I now feel I know this radio and can solve problems on my own. I made a few mistakes during construction. First, I did not really understand capacitor identification codes when I started. As a result, I misidentified a couple capacitors and installed them in the wrong locations. I recommend that anyone new to this stuff take the time to read carefully page 9 of the manual, as well as material from the ARRL handbook on component identification. When in doubt, ask. Second, I was a bit timid in my soldering technique. I was afraid of burning something, so I was gentler than I needed to be. Fortunately, I was able to have a friend with 40 years experience in aircraft electronics look over my work. I have followed his suggestions and things have gone better. If you, like me, are new to soldering, get some advice from an elmer; it can save you considerable turmoil later. Third, I wound my own toroids. I generally did not find that hard to do. Kind of like sewing a button; it was relaxing. I did however have problems with preparation of toroid leads. I did not realize the toroids were nonconducting, so I was afraid of bare wires near the toroid surface. Some of my first leads were not stripped close enough to the toroid body. I also tried different techniques to strip the leads. I eventually reached the conclusion that the approach recommended by the manual is the best. I used a heavier soldering iron, got a bulb of solder going on it, and ran the toroid wire through the ball. This worked the best and left a good, tinned surface. Finally, I made a couple of mistakes due to fatigue. This is really a nit-picky process, and it is really easy to space things out when you are tired. IN solving problems, I found it good to proofread parts placement, especially after building the RF board. I went through the manual and checked off every component for the proper number and orientation. That gave me confidence that I had done it right. Anyway, I hope these comments help someone. IF I CAN DO THIS YOU CAN DO THIS. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] CW
Hi Bill Welcome to our particular form of madness :-) QRP does not necessarily equate to slow code speed. There are slow speed nets, at least I've seen them mentioned in the past. Personally, I think your best bet is to just get on the air at a speed you can handle and make contacts. People will slow down for you, and you will gradually speed up. A good way to practice is to send to yourself from a page in a book. Try to send a bit faster than you are comfortable with, and you will find that your mental processing of code will speed up on receive also. Good luck, 73 and Merry Christmas. George The fact that you don't hear anything diferent with the KNB2 turned on doesn't mean it isn't working. It just means that the kind of noise it is designed for isn't happening just then. Some fellows have used an electric drill as a noise source to test their blankers. This gives the pulse type noises that the blanker works best on. Try that and see if you can tell on from off. This is a test to see if I am correctly connected. I have been receiving posts to this reflector but my messages in have been rejected. I have multiple email accounts and I suspect that is the reason. I changed things and hopefully this works. Anyway, I have just completed the K-2 construction and all seems to be working. Had a few problems but got them solved. Just installed the KNB2 and KDSP2 modules. The DSP is working fine and the KNB2 passes all of the tests. I think there is something wrong in the KNB2; I can hear nothing different when it is turned on. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. About a week ago, I checked with Mouser, to confirm availability of parts prior to ordering. Remember, I was gonna order parts at the end of this month, based upon the orders received at the end of the month. Turns out that Mouser was out of the NJM2211M PLL, and there was going to be a 39 day back order delay. So I placed the order for parts immediately, in the hope of reducing the wait for kitting and eventual delivery of the kits. At the time I placed the order I had 132 kits reserved, so I've ordered parts for a total of 160 kits... hoping that the back ordered PLLs will arrive about the time they'd have normally been expected had they been in stock and if I'd ordered at the end of the month... e.g. delivery around Jan 10-15. At present I have about 15 kits uncommitted. Once orders for those kits are filled, only bare bones boards will then be available in the future. I will continue to accept orders until the remaining 15 kits are reserved and then that will be it. I'm holding five (5) kits as back-ups for any which might not make it to their rightful owners, and I will accept 'waiting list' requests for those kits should they not be required later as backups. Kits are $17/each ppd to your (US) mailbox, and $19/each of DX delivery. Contact me directly if you are interested and for order information. [Elecraft] K2 Odd Power issues
I was tweaking up my Band Pass filters the other day, and noticed something weird. If you advance the Power Requested knob fully clockwise, it reads 15.2 watts on all bands except 12 meters. For 24 megacyccles per second, it shows 10.0 watts. The K2 (#2456 + A:B, etc.) produces over 10 watts (but not 15.2!) everywhere below 24kkcps, but this behavior of the POUT display has me baffled. Since I always run 5 watts anyhow, I don't see any operational issue, but I sure am curious. Also, power seems a bit low on 10 (and maybe 12) meters, and current a bit high on 160 - I'd not noticed due to the above mentioned self-imposed 5 watt limit. Any ideas out there? [Elecraft] Elecraft: Amplifier for K1
Hi folks, I have a TS520S. The low level circuitry is faulty but the PA and tank circuits are OK. My main rig is the K1 but it would be nice to be able to run QRO on occasions. So to get QRO on the cheap could I use the PA on the TS520 as an amp for the K1? My antennas are all resonant so matching to the TS520 is no probs. I guess I would loose QSK and would need a relay to bypass the 520 in rx mode. Not sure what sort of signal level would be required at the grid of the 1st 6146. One thought is to operate the K1 into a dummy load with a resistor divider tap off to feed the amp. Don't really want to modify the K1. Also is K1 OK being operated in close proximity to 100W tank circuits. There's plenty of metal around it. This is all off the top of my head and I have no experience of RF power amps. Am I flogging a dead horse here or should I just build a linear? Can't afford a K2 hi.
