OK - I can't stand it any more ! Here's my 2 cents. I want a K3! I want it to be the same size as my Collins KWM-2 - in fact, I'd like it to look and feel like my M2 or S-Line gear with a great cabinet, really nice paint, excellent rotary knob placement and size with just a couple of additions to the front panel simplicity of the KWM-2 - let's see, to the M2, add DSP for notch, etc; IF level noise blanking, band stacking registers like the Pro II - and - 200 watts output like the 1000MP Mark V - and, oh yes, a built in power supply. Hummm - I wonder if I can find a demolished KWM-2, tear the guts out of it, drop my K2/100/KAT100 in along with a power supply, hook up the knobs and . . . . 73 es gud dx --don n4hh K2/100/KAT100, etc, etc -- No virus found in this outgoing message. [Elecraft] Soldering station questions (please, no wars)
1) Mine may be going bad: I suspect my temp controlled soldering station is going south on me. In building my K2, I've noticed that it takes longer to get the solder flowing. Are there any _cheap_ but somewhat accurate ways of testing a station like this? (Sorry, don't remember the brand name but it is one of the known ones.) 2) recommendations (again, please, no wars here): If I have to replace my current station, can someone tell which of the Weller stations are good and which are ones to avoid. It seems that Weller is the only thing that I can get in town. (I'll take other recommendations just in case I have to go on-line to order one.) Thanks, folks, in advance. [Elecraft] K2-#2785 BFO has stopped working
Help! I just upgraded my SSB mod to the 2.5 kHz spacing and my BFO has stopped working. It was working after I had completed the mod but my BFO range was slightly high. I was adding additional capacitance to C173 and C174 per various postings on the reflector to attempt to move the BFO spread slightly lower (about .4 kHz). Now my BFO readings are 0. I have checked the RF probe and it works fine on TP1 and TP3; I have restored the original capacitors to C173 and 174, no luck. Voltage (rms) at pin 6 on U11 was 0.1v; Voltage (rms) on TP2 was 3.1v. I even removed the SSB card and reinstalled the W jumpers and C167, still dead. I have checked for bad solder joints several times, also. I also removed and reinstalled L33 and its parallel resistor, also checked L33 inductance and it was ok. Any suggestions? I have often thought of building a remote head for the KIO2 using the $40 Olimex PIC front panel board (now from sparkfun.com) for use with a backpack. The same idea could be used for a bigger front panel, which could also provide two VFO knobs (though not stereo dual reception). I don't see the new firmware on the official Ten-Tec firmware update site. Where is it? As of 5 mins ago the rfsquared website is showing ver 1.07 dated 6/25/2003. My statement was based upon an e-mail directly from Ten-Tec where they stated that they consider the Argonaut a finished project, that a lot of work went into getting the firmware working right and that they were not going to muck with it to add a software notch filter etc. If I still have the e-mail I'll foward it to you. Of course...Ten-Tec is one of those odd-ball companies that instead of promising you something and never delivering it they swear they'll never give you someting (PTT CW on Orion, Mode A keying on the Orion, maybe an ArgoV firmware upgrade) and suddenly one day you get it. 8-) I was a member of the firmware beta testers and got to see the official line of thought. The company is concerned about locking in firmware ASAP. They see firmware updates as a sign of weakness in marketing. They stll haven't gotten that radio right yet...look...there's yet another firmware fix is what they are afraid people will think. During a very light rain, with no accompanying lighting, there can be static charge build up on an antenna. I've seen sparks about 1/4 inch across a ground switch that wasn't quite closed. Hi, All, Hope you had a Merry Christmas. Just my 2 cents on touch screens- I work with AMX touch screens for classroom multimedia control. (I don't work for AMX, rather a state community college) The main advantage of these touch screens is that you can put any kind of buttons and labels you want on the screen, depending on what you are doing at the time. This allows one small touch screen to do the work of many keyboards. This still doesn't excuse their use at checkouts, however! 73, Mike, WH6AH At 11:31 AM 12/27/2004 -0500, Buddy Brannan wrote: On Mon, Dec 27, 2004 at 08:15:05AM -0500, Dan Barker wrote: Ever heard of a touch screen? A bad thermostat can cause a tip to run cool. Apparently your tip is heating because you do eventually melt solder. 2 - If just the soldering tip is replaceable, remove it and make sure it is clean *inside* where it attaches. Corrosion that builds up at the attachment point (threads, sleeve, etc.) can really cut down the heat transfer from the element to the tip. 3 - If you give up on it, consider a Hakko 936-ESD. No, you can't get it today if no one in town sells one, but they are available in two or three days via web order if you want it shipped priority from various places. They aren't better than Weller, nor is Weller better than the Hakko. After all it's just a soldering station! The magic is in the hands that wield it, not in the tool itself. I've used both, although I haven't use the newer Weller stations. When I was last in the market for a new soldering station, the Hakko price was the best. I really like the front-panel knob temperature control. I think where a lot of ops go wrong is using too COOL of an iron. Desoldering braid is nearly non-functional with a 700F iron. At the least, it's likely you'll lift a trace by leaving it cook too long. Cleaning enameled wire by the blob method also is very poor at 700F, not to mention soldering larger terminals instead of a board trace. The ability to tweak the knob up to 800F, wait 5 seconds, then go to work is a real advantage of the variable temperature stations to me. Ron AC7AC P.S. Re: [Elecraft] 80m ECN?
Now guys! A loop antenna is in the works. I hope to get the ladder line built today. The main problem is getting the ladder line through the wall. My other antennas use coax which routes through the foundation, into the crawl space, and then up through the floor. The openings are too small for the ladder line. I may just have to drill a couple of holes through the wall and build the ladder line on both sides of the barrier. Routing it through the window is simply not an option. Once that antenna gets in place I can experiment on 80 with my friends in OK and NM to see how it propagates. Then I can try ECN/80. But first I need to get an installer built, a white paper written, and a bunch of advertising copy created so I can market a few software tools. Priorities? H... [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer Opinions?
I would be interested in any experience/opinions with antenna analyzers. . I have read the E-Ham reviews and see mixed reviews on Autek and MFJ analyzers, mostly relating to build quality. AEA units are more favorably rated, but also more expensive. Does anyone have experience with the Micro 908 Antenna Analyzer kit? Thanks. HOWARD W. Howard asks: Does anyone have experience with the Micro 908 Antenna Analyzer kit? Howard, I have used the MFJ and like it a lot, however, for me the choice would be the Micro908. It does more than antenna analysis and has many more possibilities long run, plus you get to build it! Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer Opinions?
I just finished building a 908 for someone, and mine is coming in the second round. It works pretty well in the limited testing I put it through, and you get a development platform for other projects as well. Plenty of detail on the site. Quality is totally in your control :) Parts are all fine, case fit is OK and looks pretty good (although I'm not sure why it uses a stick-on when there'll be different apps in the future). de John/W1RT On Mon, 27 Dec 2004 14:12:43 -0800, Howard W. [Elecraft] Strange results at first test.
I am also getting some wierd results on first test. Don recommended a solder check and I have done this. I have rewetted all the joints on the control board and display to no avail. I get no info messages and things seem to come up as they should. On switch on I get: Elecraft followed by 2.04P 1.09 then a frequency display. At this point tapping display does nothing. Tapping menu a few times brings up the menu. Now display works and brings up 13volts/0.008amps. Tapping display several times again sometimes brings back the frequency display and sometimes the menu. It always seems to want to go back to the menu by itself after a few seconds and a lot of flicking backwards and forwards. rate seems to work on frequency and the optical decoder seems to work. Seems to be a wierd intermittant problem. Any ideas would be much appreciated. 73, Pete/N9PT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Strange results at first test.
Pete, When you power on, the firmware level is being displayed. That does not normally occur, but it does display like you indicate IF you hold one or more buttons down while powering on. Based on that info, do check to see that all buttons move freely in the front panel button holes. If you can't locate one or more tight buttons, remove the front panel from the board, take off the keycaps and put it together without the keycaps - just to see if everything then works. If it does, then you just have to find out why the keycaps bind on the cutouts - it is difficult to position the switches wrong, so you could have a bad front panel. I had a bad one once, it was punched just a wee bit crooked (only about 2 mm off from a corner to corner measurement), and it was very difficult to see visually - and I even had a good one to compare with. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - I am also getting some wierd results on first test. [Elecraft] Re: KFL1-4 Option
I have an older K1 serial # 00427. Ijust purchased and assembled the KFL1-4 board and installed it in my K1. I chose to use 40, 30, 20 and 15 meter bands. All went togeather very smooth. The problem started when I went to adjust the trimmers. I followed the procedure as described.10MHz seemed to not have any response. All other bands work smooth as silk. I don't think the 18.100 MHz crystal is oscillating. I don't get any thing when I check it at a point beside C5. All of the relays are working properly. I set it on 30m and turned off the power, removed the board and checked continuity at all the proper points with the relays set and all was OK. What do you guys think. I may have damaged the crystal. Not 100% sure. Any suggestions. Allen kn4ud ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Strange results at first test.
As usual, Don's advice is excellent. I would add that you should check to see if there might be a short between pins on one (or more) of the switches or traces connecting to them. It is EASY to accidentally splash some solder across solder traces either at the switches, the microcontroller or connectors. Depending on your eyesight, a magnifying glass may be required for checking this. On Dec 27, 2004, at 4:31 PM, W3FPR - Don Wilhelm wrote: When you power on, the firmware level is being displayed. [Elecraft] Microphone Resistor
My new MD2 microphone should arrive tomorrow, and I am trying to decide what to do about the resistor between pin 6 and pin 1. I have a hand microphone with a Heil HC-4 and a N0MF pre-amp in it that I want to continue to use. It has a 1k resistor between pin 1 and pin 6 in per the instructions for the pre-amp. It seams I have three options. 1. Remove the 1k resistor from the hand microphone, and install the 5.6k resistor in the K2. Will this provide enough current to run the pre-amp in the hand microphone? 2. Add the 5.6k resistor to the K2 and leave the resistor in the hand microphone. Will the hand microphone then draw too much current? 3. Put the 5.6k resistor in the MD2. I know this will work, but requires fitting the resistor into the connector. What is the best option? Re: [Elecraft] Microphone Resistor
Jeff, Let me offer one more option. Put a 1.2k resistor in parallel with the 5.6k when (and only when) the mic containing the preamp and HC5 is plugged in. Here is how to do that easily: Solder the 5.6k resistor on the mic jack between pins 1 and 6 as instructed for the MD2, then solder a 1.2k resistor on the mic jack between pins 1 and 5. IMPORTANT - remove any connection at the mic header on pin 5 (FUNC is not used). Now, inside your mic plug for the HC5/preamp mic, place a jumper between pins 5 and 6. When you plug in the Elecraft mic (any stock Elecraft mic), you have the proper 5.6k resistor in the 5 volt line. When you plug in the mic having the jumper installed, the 1.2k resistor is placed in parallel (through the jumper) with the 5.6k resulting in a resistance of 988 ohms which is likely close enough to 1k (use 1.3k instead of the 1.2k and the result will be 1055 ohms if you prefer that value). 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - My new MD2 microphone should arrive tomorrow, and I am trying to decide what to do about the resistor between pin 6 and pin 1.
