Good heavens!

When I was a novice with a station like this, I would use anything that
would work.

You can make a Command set look really good by the following method (it does
take a bit of metalwork, though):

First you need an extension for the tuning knob. The shaft of the variable
cap is
an odd size (3/16"?) and so it helps to have access to a lathe to make a
custom adapter. But it can be done a number of ways.

Next you make a front panel and mount the Command set chassis behind it with
spacers - about 3/4 inch. New dial is a disk of metal. plastic or even
cardboard. A window with a bit of Plexiglas lets you see the dial, and a few
dial
lamps to light it up are a nice touch. A Spot switch and other controls can be
put on the panel as well.

Re: [Elecraft] SKN rigs - OT Old Stuff Comment

2005-12-24 Thread Mike Morrow
>Well, there you are! "Restorable" ARC-5s are expensive but junkers aren't.

Most have been ham-hacked into oblivion. Today, it would be a shame to deface
or modify in *any* way WWII-era military radios that have managed to avoid 60
years of ham defacement. Please, use a "pre-hacked" unit if you intend to
actually put one on the air.

The famous WWII "command set" (ATA/ARA, SCR-274-N, AN/ARC-5) transmitters
actually perform rather well when left all original and operated in the manner
which the original engineers intended. Leave it to a ham armed with not much
more real radio engineering knowledge than how to use Ohm's law to completely
"re-design" (i.e., destroy) a set. Most of the post-WWII ham mag articles
detailing the faults of the original designs are based upon pure myth and lack
of knowledge by the author.

I have all-original AN/ARC-5 and SCR-274-N systems (radios, controls, racks,
mountings, tuning shafts, cables, connectors, etc.) that took me many years to
complete. The receivers and transmitters are by far the easiest components to
obtain.

eBay is a great resource for hacked or original condition units.

Those who are interested in this great old technology, both historical,
operational, and technical, may want to join two other qth.net lists:

[EMAIL PROTECTED][General military radios of all eras, but WWII
predominates]
[EMAIL PROTECTED][WWII aircraft radios, especially "command" sets]

Traffic can sometimes be light on these lists. But beware...on either of the
above lists, inquiries about modifications to all-original gear or major
"re-design" of lightly-hacked gear, may get a somewhat cool reception.

[Elecraft] Connecting Kent Straight Key and Paddle

Merry Xmas!

I wonder if I'm the only one in the country thinking about this stuff

Anyway, I'd like very specific instructions about connecting it to my

For instance what kind of plug (for each wire) and how soldered to
the plug.

Just to take my best guess I've already bought RS Part 274-284 <1/8"
stereo phone plug>, and wonder

if these will work. If so how to solder?

Sorry to be such a dope-

RE: [Elecraft] Low BFO Output

2005-12-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tedd,

Yes, a low BFO voltage would cause poor receive sensitivity. I doubt that
pulling the crystals caused the problem, but the new crystals may fix it.
While you are removing things, you may want to arbitrarily replace the NE612
at U6 just in case.

I recently repaired a K2 with a similar problem with one of the K2s I built
last May - I can't say just what the problem was (most likely the crystals),
but this one had failed before and replacing the NE612 appeared to correct
it the first time, but after having a similar failure a second time, I
replaced the crystals, varactors, inductor and the NE612 - I do hope and
trust that it will stay fixed now (no, this was not a solder connection
problem).

[Elecraft] Replacement for K2 Frequency Probe Assy

Unfortunately I broke my Frequency Probe Assy while making it

conveniently.

Any suggestions, aside from reordering all the parts from Elecraft?

RE: [Elecraft] Connecting Kent Straight Key and Paddle

2005-12-24 Thread Chuck Gehring
Jeff,
I have mine already configured and ready to go. I used a Radio Shack Stereo
Y cable RS 42-2463. Connected the paddle to one side of the Y cable with a
RS 274-284. From the straight key I used a RS 274-274 in line stereo jack
that I modified in accordance with the K2 manual page 95 figure 8-1 and a
short pice of 1/8 stereo cable (about 6") RS42-2387. I plugged the straight
key into the modified stereo jack and the 6" extension with the stereo plug
into the other Y cable connection. With this set up I can use either may
paddle or straight key all the time any time?

I hope this helps

For instance what kind of plug (for each wire) and how soldered to
the plug.

Just to take my best guess I've already bought RS Part 274-284 <1/8"

if these will work. If so how to solder?

Sorry to be such a dope-

RE: [Elecraft] Connecting Kent Straight Key and Paddle

2005-12-24 Thread EricJ
You probably are!

You have the right connectors. For the paddle, determine which paddle is
going to be for dots. For most right-handers, the thumb is the dot, but
there's no standard. Use a three conductor cable (2 conductors and a shield,
e.g.) and connect the three wires to the paddle, one for dot, dash and
ground. I don't know how the Kents are set up. Obviously if they come with a
cable, you use that one. If not solder the wires to the wire lugs provided
or whatever attachment scheme Kent uses.

The stereo plug is made with three sections each insulated from the other.
The tip is appropriatedly called the TIP, the RING is the next section down,
and the large metal barrel is called the SLEEVE.

Slide the plastic housing for the plug onto the cable first.

Solder the dot wire from the paddle to the TIP connection inside the plug.
Look at the terminals inside carefully and you will see that it is clearly
the center one. Measure from the tip to the terminals with an ohmmeter if
there is any doubt which is the proper one.

Solder the dash wire from the paddle to the Ring. You will see that that one
is stacked below the tip connection. Again, to be sure you can measure
continuity from the ring to the terminals to see which one is right.

Solder the ground wire from the paddle to the sleeve. That is the large tab
that sticks out with some pieces on it to crimp the wire for strain relief.
There usually isn't any doubt about this one. You will usually see a little
hole about a 1/4" or so up that tab to solder to.

Screw the plug housing on and it is done. Plug it into the K2, make sure you
have selected INP/PDLn from the Menu and give it a try. If it works and you
get dots on the proper paddle, you're done. If it's backwards, just change
to PDLr.

Do the straight key the same way except you are going to be connecting only
to the TIP and the SLEEVE of the stereo connector. The Ring is not used. On
the K2 Menu select INP/HAND or you will get a string of dots every time you
close the straight key.

Hope this is what you were looking for. If not post again. I'll be in and
out all evening as we don't do anything on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas, Jeff.

RE: [Elecraft] Connecting Kent Straight Key and Paddle

2005-12-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jeff,

Connect your paddle as a couple other folks have suggested - wire the dot
side to the tip of the stereo plug and the dash side to the ring. Then add
2 diodes - one each to the Dot and Dash lines (it doesn't matter if the
diodes are at the key or at the K2 end of the cable, take your pick) - the
anodes connect to the paddle lines and the cathodes are connected together
and connected to the straight key (of course, the 2 keys must have their
ground side connected to the sleeve of the plug too).

Be certain your K2 is set for INP PDLn or INP PDLR in the menu, and also be
certain the Auto-detect feature is set on - from the menu INP, press EDIT
then tap DISPLAY - if you see ADET OFF, tap display again to turn it on.

73, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

RE: [Elecraft] Replacement for K2 Frequency Probe Assy

2005-12-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jeff,

You WILL need that frequency probe working to properly finish your K2. You
can request a replacement 10 pf cap from Elecraft (or buy the complete probe
kit), but in the meantime, most any 10 to 15 pf capacitor will function
electrically, so find a source for one and use it until your replacement
arrives. If you don't have one in your junkbox, Radio Shack MAY have
something to offer, I just don't know for certain. If you can find a scrap
VCR, TV, FM Radio, etc. somewhere, you should be able to salvage a small
value cap from the RF section (use 2-20 pf caps in series, or 3-33 pf caps
in series if you have to). It may not be as mechanically stable as the
proper probe, but it WILL work.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 BFO drift

2005-12-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Aki,

The BFO drift is not specified separately, so I cannot say if it is within
spec or not.
The entire frequency stability of the K2 is specified at less than 200 Hz
after a 5 minute warmup, so you can check the overall drift and if it is
excessive, perhaps a further look at the BFO may be in order.

[Elecraft] K2 minimum power our

I'm considering a K2. The power out spec says <.5W... how much less?
I'm not much of a QRP op, my amplifier only needs 100 to 150mW. If the

and simplify T/R switching.

Well, Bill, if your output needs are that low, I suggest you add the
K60XV module and use the transverter outputs to drive your amplifier.

The K2 will go below .5 watts, but the power output at that level
isn't super accurate.

[Elecraft] K2 Alignment and Test, Part III: High current

2005-12-24 Thread K.Kishimoto

Power supply: SEC 1223 (23A)
Unit type: K2, no options installed
Passed Alignment and test, Part II
Passed all resistant checks

Baseline voltage and current (backlight on)
13.5v, 0.24A

Transmit voltage and current into Elecraft 20W Dummy load (Using TUNE
function)

At 5W: 12.7v, 1.84A
At 10W: 12.1v, 2.98A

The current draw seems far too excessive given the suggested range in the
manual. What components could potential cause this problem? The voltage drop
seems high as well given the capacity of the PSU.

Thanks,
Kathy

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Alignment and Test, Part III: High current

2005-12-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Kathy,

I suggest that you tackle the voltage drop problem before investigating the
current draw. What size wire are you using for the power wiring? - it
should be 16 guage or larger. Next check all the connections from the power
supply to the K2 - they should be tight or well soldered. If no problem is
discovered in the power supply wiring itself, measure the voltage at the
power supply output terminals under the load in transmit - compare to the K2
display. The K2 display should show about 0.3 volts less than the power
supply output due to the protective series diode.

Lastly, check the soldering in the K2 12 volt path to be certain there are
no high resistance solder joints.

Once you get the voltage drop under control, the current should fall in line
with what is expected. You receive current draw is about normal.
