Ever considered that you might be colorblind? :-) Just kidding, but I am a monochromie, although I didn't really know it until I got to college. I'd figured out I was having a hard time distinguishing the color bands on the big molded caps and carbon resistors when I was a teenage ham [they were much bigger then], but everyone (and I) just put it off to bad light. In the general population, the huge majority of color-challenged folk will be male. Very rare in females. Nearly all hams are male. Go figure, maybe God is not on our side? :-) In a population of males, the vast majority will have some sort of color vision defect, most minor. Most will be an inability to detect differences between two specific colors, or differences between shades of one color [I'm quoting the scientific literature here, I have no idea what this means, of course]. Us monochromies make up maybe 1% of the male population and we have it easy ... the world looks like old monochrome TV programs ... or like the Windows default color scheme only without the color. Since that's all I've ever known, it looks pretty normal to me. OTOH, I can see at night far better than any of you can -- so there! I truly appreciated the taped resistors for the K2. I measured every one, but I didn't have to hunt for each one. The other color-coded components [not many] were tagged by my wife, who has perfect color vision. The rest had the smallest numbers you can imagine on them, but no colors that mattered. [Elecraft] Component Body Colours
The discussion on the RF Choke Question prompts me to observe that not only are component body colours apparently at the whim of the manufacturer, but that some of the body colours chosen seem to make it very hard to read the bands. Is this band yellow or is it orange? Or is it brown? Blue bodied 1% resistors I find especially difficult. I have reached the point where before soldering I check all passive components: resistors with a DMM, inductors and capacitors with AADE's wonderful L/C Meter IIB Inductance/Capacitance Meter. There was also some discussion about bending component leads. The little red plastic gizmo available from Milestone Technologies Morse Express http://www.mtechnologies.com/tools/#bender is very easy to use and ensures the component will slip into the holes for it on the PC board with very little bother and stress on the component. Usual disclaimers. 73 Kevin VK3DAP / ZL2DAP ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] RF choke question
Jeff, The body color of inductors, resistors, capacitors will vary from time to time depending on the manufacturer's whims, and therefore is not a good point of reference for any component identification. The color bands are the only thing that are important. It is unfrotunate that the K2 manual does indicate the body color for the RF chokes - that was only valid at the time the manual was created. The smallest RF choke with color bands brown-black-brown should be used for RFC15. You may be confused by the body color on the other RF chokes, none are colored Green-Brown-Green which would indicate an inductance of 5,100,000 uH or 5.1 Hy which would be a very large choke (it could be 15 uH Brown-Green-Black, but I cannot be certain on that). Refer to the K2 parts list for the various chokes that are provided with the kit, and if that is not sufficient clarification, the ARRL Handbook Components Data chapter has good information on component color coding and identification. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > I'm at the stage where I need to put the little tiny RF choke on > the bottom side of the RF board. > > The manual calls for RFC15, which is supposedly tiny, and > BROWN-BLACK-BROWN. [Elecraft] Re: RF choke question
Ok, sorry again. I think I figured it out. The "mini" choke I thought was a choke is really R116, a 5.1Mohm 1/8w resistor. This means that I have one missing green body choke. My question though still remains regarding RFC 1,2, 12 and 13 - I have tan ones, the book calls for green. Is there any difference? Thanks. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for January 14th and 15th, 2007
Good Evening, Wow! That was great! 40 meters was wide open. Florida to Southern California, Indiana to North Dakota to Colorado, with Ontario and Alberta thrown in for good measure. . The Minnesota contingent seemed to be on hiatus but that's OK ;) Twenty meters was also good and elicited quite a list of check ins. Looks like 25 in all for an initial estimate. As I scan through my rough notes I'll see if there is another one. I was receiving very good signal reports but handing out ones which were a bit weaker with some added QSB. Both bands were very quiet though. During the first net my dryer was still running so that caused a little trouble but mostly I was just very cold. The wood stove doesn't really throw out heat until about dinner time. During the second net my desk temperature was rising throughout. It started at 63 and got close to 70 by the end of the net. I can't wait to get back out there since this room is far from the stove and still about 50 degrees. I think you may like to hear a few of the net stats. These two are the most important: 455 folks have produced a check in total of 2962! One of these days I will count how many times the net has been run. I have missed at least four times maybe more. The only days when we have not held them is because of major contests. I think these nets may stand the test of time. Looks like there are quite a few of you who like what happens each Sunday afternoon and evening and are willing to support us. Thank you! I did have a string of S2 check ins which came in a pileup. This made things a bit tougher than normal. Well too bad for you Kevin, get used to it! I like the sound of all those folks even though it is hard to get a single call sign out of the chaos. The weather reports from around the country were chilly to cold except for those in Florida and Louisiana. Even Indiana was not too bad. Tom had an inch of ice and was worried about his antenna. I have dry snow and am trying to stay warm. In Fargo, North Dakota Ken was chilly but I did not get a temperature for John in Alberta. Tom worked him and I heard a 'B' out of that contact ;) Stay warm folks and I will see you all next week, 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] RF choke question
Hey again guys, I'm at the stage where I need to put the little tiny RF choke on the bottom side of the RF board. The manual calls for RFC15, which is supposedly tiny, and BROWN-BLACK-BROWN. The only one I have that's brown-black-brown is a larger one. The little tiny one I have is GREEN-BROWN-GREEN. Which one is right? :) And, for RFC 1, 2, 12 and 13, they're supposed to be Green chokes, but I seem to have 3 greens and one tan colored chokes for this band combo. Could that be possible? RE: [Elecraft] K2 RF Board Trimmer Orientation?
Jim, I was not aware that they were shipping those capacitors with the K2, but apparently they are. Rather than giving you a direct answer (because I can't remember which end is which at the moment), do a bit of measurement with your ohmmeter. Measure the resistance from the adjustment slotted part to each lead of the trimmer - call the one that shows continuity 'ground' - then measure continuity between the RF board ground and each lead of the capacitor holes - call the one that shows zero ohms to ground 'ground' - then mate up the 'ground' end of the trimmer to the 'ground' point on the RF board. You just cannot go wrong by checking in that manner - the whole point of the exercise is to orient the adjustment so what you touch when adjusting the trimmer will be at ground, and if positioned that way, you will not de-tune the circuit when adjusting. Of course, if you get them the 'wrong way around', all will still be OK, but you will have to adjust the trimmers with a non-conductive tool. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > I'm not sure which way to orient the 30pf trimmers on the RF board. > > The silkscreen has a flat but the parts I have are flat at either end. > They're blue and one flat end is larger than the other. > > Should I align the "nose" (smaller flat end) with the silkscreen flat? > > 73 > > jim ab3cv > k2 #5874 > -- No virus found in this outgoing message. RE: [Elecraft] PSK31 using data mode
Jim, If you have not set up the RTTY filters and BFOs (I think that you have not from your description), then do that first and it should set things straight. I usually set the RTTY filters as follows: FL1=OP1, with the BFOs set the same as those for SSB (RTTY = LSB and RTTYr = USB). FL2=1.00, FL3=0.80, FL4=0.40 with the BFOs set to position the passband centered at 1000 Hz. With those settings, tune the station of interest to (or near) 1000 Hz using FL1, then when the station is selected, lock the transmit frequency in the software. Now you can narrow the filters by tapping XFIL if a strong station comes on nearby and tries to take over the receiver AGC. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > I have encountered a problem using PSK31 in data mode with my K2. [Elecraft] PSK31 using data mode
I have encountered a problem using PSK31 in data mode with my K2. I have been successfully using PSK31 with a homebrew interface for several months with the K2 in USB mode. I recently decided to use PSK31 in the data mode to take advantage of its automatic selection of no compression and its DSP selection of no noise reduction and no auto-notch while allowing me to have my own bandwidth selections just for PSK31. My software is Digipan. The problem that I noticed is that the receiving frequency of a station I am watching on the waterfall is actually approximately 1 KHz higher than its actual frequency. For example, a station could be transmitting on 7070.5 and I will see its signal on 7071.5 and nowhere else (i.e. "ghosting" is not occurring). I determined this by conducting a test with a nearby ham. I assume that I am also transmitting on that same frequency (7071.5) although we were unable to verify that. I am certainly not transmitting on the correct frequency since I was never able to make contact with anyone over a number of attempts. I have generally had no problems conducting QSOs with anyone. RE: [Elecraft] Can't save CalFil values
Larry, Do you have the internal counter probe connected to TP2? It MUST be connected so the internal microprocessor can read the frequency - and that is the meaning of the message. It does not refer to an external frequency counter, but rather the internal one. You don't have to enable the internal counter in any special way, all you have to do is plug in the counter cable (unless something is not working correctly). 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > Hi, > Just received by first (already built) K2. RE: [Elecraft] Low PLL Output
Chuck, You are on the right track, but I don't believe you can conclude that Q19 itself is at fault. The higher voltage you find at the source is caused by Q19 conducting more than it normally does, and that indicates the gate bias is running too high - this JFET (like many other oscillators) uses self biasing which depends on the oscillation itself to properly control the bias.. First thing to check is R21, followed by D18 and the PLL crystal and L31. Lastly check capacitors C64 and C65 and varactors D16 and D17. Check all these components for correct values and good soldering. Check the diode for proper orienation (refer to the parts placement diagram). If you have doubts about what a good solder connection should look like, take a look at the soldering information on the Builder's Resource page at the Elecraft website www.elecraft.com . 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > To cut to the chase, what I have found is the PLL reference > oscillator output low. [Elecraft] XV222 won't fly?
Aloha to all: I am brand new to this list. Last week I ordered and received my first Elecraft toy, a xv222. I assembled the xvrtr in about 6 hours. Sweet little kit, straight forward and fun. Powered it up just to find no DC at TP1. Not oscillator activity at all? All voltages test okay in the box. Poking in the xtal area, no oscillation? Bad rock? If I generate my own signal and input it to mixer, xvrtr works fine business. Two transitors in this circuit also seem to be working. I don't have another crystal to work with either Any possibility of this kit series having some bad crystals? [Elecraft] Low PLL Output
Greeting to the List, This is my first post. I'm building K2 sn5939 and have hit a snag at alignment and test part II. It actually went through all of the tests and alignment OK, but when I hooked an antenna up to try the receiver I notices some unusual symptoms. To cut to the chase, what I have found is the PLL reference oscillator output low. It measures .3v at pin 1 of U4. The expected value is .8v-1.8v . The frequency counter picks up the output and the output frequency varies over the proper range. I have checked yet again for bridges, cold solder joints and all component values. All seems correct. The DC source voltage measures 1.27v with an expected value of .8v . This tells me Q19 is not conducting as it should. Before I declare Q19 lightly toasted, does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? [Elecraft] #3421 MCU problems?
Dear Elecrafters, I had left my rig on over night, and this mornings ice 'storm' brought a few strokes of unexpected lightning to the area. Now my K2 (with KSB2, KNB2, KAT2) is constantly transmitting dits with both mic and key removed. I'm afraid it might be the MCU. Is this problem 'resetable', (I can't seem to make any buttons work while it is transmitting - and it IS transmitting - verified by nearby receiver feeding K2 into dummy load), OR will I need to replace the MCU? [Elecraft] K2 3354 has survived its transplant
Hi Guys, As there seem to be a number of people on the list who collect K2 numbers and locations I would like to say that K23354 now has a new set of PA transistors fitted and survived the smoke test. Is there really such a thing as a K2 trainspotter? FWIW I got the new PA transistors from JABDOG over this side of the pond. I have a couple of observations. It is really important to follow the instructions on page 67 of the manual.Q7 and Q8 must be parallel to the PCB when you fit them..I have some evidence that Q8 was, in my case, not quite parallel and may not have made full thermal contact with the thermal pad and heatsink.which is probably why it failed. The second mistake I made was to have the dummy load connected to the rx antenna socket rather than the TX/RX antenna socket when I did the TX testing on the K160RX option. Lastly be very careful when removing blown PA transistors.mine were soldered in really well and in getting them out I managed to lift a couple of lands.now repaired. Fond regards, Steve G0XAR PS will there be an Elecraft stall at Orzarkicon this year?..G0BBL, M0PUB and I will be attending ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
