[Elecraft] K2- Thermistor PC Board, PLL Upgrade

2007-05-31 Thread Jim Murray
Hello All,
Has anyone had any problems fitting C87 next to the
thermistor board? And yet to come RFC 14? That
should be good for a few cuss words. C87 is showing
very little daylight between it and a connection on
the thermistor board, had to mount it rotated a few
degrees. RFC 14 again will be tough not touch the
board. No shorting yet but don't like the looks of
it.
Thanks,
Jim/k2hn

RE: [Elecraft] CW practice QSOs...

2007-05-31 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
That's a great idea, Fred, but I think you misunderstood. I was suggesting
ways to improve one's fist as well as one's copy speed. Both are important.
Recording my own fist, and then listening to it later, was a good way to
hear how my fist sounds "on the air".

The neat skill that your suggestion will help develop is "copying in the
head" without writing anything down. I keep forgetting that there are many
ops who can't do that, and I can't imagine enjoying CW nearly as much if I
had to write everything on paper. I've had my ham shack in one corner of the
kitchen (close to the coffee pot!) and ran QSO's while fixing dinner (AS OM,
POT'S BOILING OVER) or, more often, while doing other chores. And, of
course, I've had my 'shack' in the workshop where I'm working on projects
while copying the other station 'in my head'.

Even when lounging at the operating desk, being able to lean back, close my
eyes, and visualize the 'airspace' with all those signals dancing around the
periphery while listening to what someone is saying is a really great way to
operate! It's also a good way to practice copying two signals at once. I can
do that to a point. It's like listening to two people talk at once. If they
aren't chattering on too fast or I'm having trouble following their meaning,
it works. And then sometimes I don't want to be distracted and punch in the
400 or 200 Hz filter instead of the 1.5 kHz filer ;-)

Look up Morse Gen on Google. It will send CW from a text file and
whatever speed you desire. It will save it as a .wav file which you can
burn onto a CD and listen to in your vehicle.

Last time I drove down to Atascadero [~5 hrs] to visit my college
roommate and hit the Cal Poly Book store to replenish clothing [OK ...
and drink a little wine, the wine business in the Cal. Central Coast
area is huge], I fed it an e-book I'd bought, and "read" it in CW all
the way down and back. Took 6 CD's -- 3 down, 3 back. Really ... as in
"really really really" ... beats talk radio :-)

Even sent a couple of CDs I made of the letters we put into the packages
we sent to an adopted troop in Afghanistan who was building a K2 and
working towards a ticket.

Or simply move the POWER control, and the output should jump to whatever

Curt,

How are you attempting to initiate transmit? If you ae pressing TUNE,
then 20 watts is what should be produced - the KPA100 firmware limits
TUNE to 20 watts. If you need to try at a higher power than that, you
must press TUNE and DISPLAY together.

OTOH, if you are already doing TUNE/DISPLAY, then check the KPA100 LPF
toroids for the correct number of turns - count the nmber of times the
wire passes through the center of the core.

All has been well up until now, including setting
the
bias per instructions. Without PA's my bias

current

was 330 mA, so I successfully set it for 730 mA

with
the PA's.

I had adjusted R26 for 5w and got the VSWR sensor
zeroed. During my high power test (into a matched
antenna on a clear channel into a good antenna) my
VSWR is reading 1.2 on the K2 and similar on my
external meter. When I transmit the PA devices do
get
very hot (too hot to touch after about 10 seconds)
but
they quickly cool (maybe around 5 seconds or less)
after transmit ceases.

Here is the behavior i am getting. First column

is

K2
power setting (on 20m), second is what the K2

reads

on
transmit, and third is my meter. My meter is not
state of the art but it is reasonable with my

other
rig.

K2 SettingK2 Indicated Meter

1515 20
2020 28
2525 30
3023 28
3522 30
4022 35
5023 32

Thinking that maybe R26 was way off, i set the K2
for
40 watts and tried to adjust R26 to read 40 watts

-

no
this got me no where.

I tried to operate on different bands with two
different antennas. Same impact on all bands,
except
it has even lower output on 10m.

Troubleshooting suggestions appreciated!

If you have compression turned on in the W2IHY box, be certain to set
the compression in the K2 to 1:1. Compressing an already compressed

Curt:

I bet you are using the KPA100 with a KAT100 and using the tune button on the
front panel of the K2. When the KPA100 is connected the output power of the
KPA100 is limited to 20 watts. Try plugging a key into the key jack and set it
for Hand Key mode and press the key. I bet you will see the amount of power
out that you have set with the power control on the front panel of the K2. If
this is the case I fought the same thing for a day before I realized that the
K2 firmware limits the power out to 20 watts in the tune mode when a KAT100 is
connected.

A committe must be created to evaluate whether serial number 0005 received on
day 4 is better than/equal to serial number 0010 received on day 2.

In the above example, both units would have a serial/delievery value of 20, thus
requiring a third factor.

RE: [Elecraft] CW practice QSOs...

2007-05-31 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Ha, ha! My first reaction what that the best "simulator" was a K2, K1 or KX1
into a decent antenna .

That said, he wants to break the 18 wpm barrier. It gets harder to find QSOs
above 15-20 wpm. I used W1AW sessions to get my 35 wpm certificate, then
promptly never used 35 or 40 wpm again except on very rare occasions. The
"simulator" sounded like a good idea for consistent high-speed practice
under typical band conditions.

I presume he wants to be able to work other stations in that speed range, so
sending is equally important.

For sending practice I find a program like CW GET is invaluable because it's
so touchy. It wants perfect, steady keying to decode properly; the sort of
stuff a keyboard provides with perfect inter-word spacing. If I can get good
copy on CW GET, I know my keying is acceptable. Perhaps I have a bigger
challenge sending since I use a bug or hand pump, but it still takes
practice and skill using paddles and a keyer.

Before software like CW GET was around I recorded my own sending, working
down a page in a phone book with addresses and numbers or at least a page
out of a magazine. Then I played it back, preferably the next day. If it was
a fist I was happy to copy, I was happy.

Imagine the amount of time and expense that it takes
to stock and then support -each- kit sold (shudder).
And people, not machines need to do this work.

Hopefully, after the initial R&D has been done for the
K3, it's more like a magazine, where printing more
copies is almost cost free after (N) number of copies
has paid for the production costs of the first
magazine and distribution.

The guys jet down to V31 with a laptop, and sit out by
the water. As the orders come in, they click the
checkbox for more boards, cabinets, etc. without even
leaving the lounge chair. The biggest hardship of the
day would be flagging down the pool attendant for more
suntan lotion, towels, or maybe one of those punch
drinks with the little umbrellas in it.

I bet the guys are already getting soft just thinking
about it... ;-)

Hello everyone,

Does anyone on the list happen to recall the website address mentioned (I
think) on this list a few months ago as being particularly valuable in

this particular practice software source was good at contest simulations

I may have seen the source of the practice software mentioned in QST

like "B & B Cyber Software" but that's only a best guess.

If anyone happens to know what I'm talking about, I'd appreciate your

Doug and all,

Actually, I think your first link told everyone what they really needed to
know. If you ordered on or before 5/14 you should be in the first run. But
I wouldn't plan on getting a first run order right after July 1st. My guess
it will be somewhat later in July before they really start shipping, and
then it will be a few at a time. I suppose they need to do some final
checking, etc. as they go out the door.

As to totals, I don't think Wayne or Eric want to disclose that for various
reasons, but we know they initially planned on 200 per run, and then
increased it. Somebody speculated the new number was 220, but I don't think
that makes sense intuitively. Since they indicated they increased both the
1st and 2nd runs, that suggest to me that orders were very much stronger
than anticipated, and a 10% increase doesn't seem logical. I'm betting it
was much more than that, but how much I could only guess. Something like
20% to 50% would seem more logical (maybe even more), depending on
production capacity. Perhaps not for both runs, but who knows? If you had
been in the demonstration room at Dayton on Thursday night, you would get a
pretty good idea that interest was very strong, not to mention all the
interest shown here on the reflector. It seems like every other person I
talk to has either ordered one already, or is wrestling with their pocket
book about doing so. Anyway, we will get a better idea of the number soon
enough when folks start posting their serial numbers! It wouldn't surprise
me a bit if they sold 1,000 of them by Christmas! The real question is can
they deliver that many! In the meantime, those of us who have ordered need
to go on a valium drip!

responses, they QRS to attract more callers. Faster, louder callers get
through sooner. If conditions like fading or echo make copy difficult at
high speed, skilled ops slow down. If they are loud and fast, they win.
There may be a few "bulls in the china shop" who persist at high speed
despite indications that it's hurting their score. They lose. It's that
simple.

On the calling side, if you are weak and/or slow, you won't get through as
quickly as those who are loud and fast. Be patient. Copy repetitive exchange
items while you wait. Anticipate subsequent serial numbers. These techniques
increase your ability to complete a QSO when you do get through, even at a
higher speed than you can use for rag-chewing. If you aren't getting
through, come back when the fast operator's rate declines. Most will QRS
when they work a slow caller, at least after a repeat request. Winning ops
want to work everyone they can. They just do it in the most rational
sequence to maximize their own score.

Did you know that a good radio makes it easier to copy at high speed?
Ringing filters, mushy audio and invasive DSP reduce your effective code
speed. That's why I love my K2 and why I look forward to the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3

2007-05-31 Thread Rajiv Dewan, N2RD
A significant portion of the functionality of K3 is software
defined. Elecraft has already indicated this will be 'one-click'
updateable using WinXP. These kinds of modern radios can really be
modified significantly by software alone. Consider the improvements
in Ten-Tec's Orion and Flex-Radio's SDR-100o over their 2/3 three
year lifespan. Both of them are significantly better than when they
were introduced. Now throw in the super customer responsive culture
of Elecraft and we can safely predict that the K3 will be steadily
and significantly upgraded on a continual basis.

[Elecraft] K2 #5471 On the Air!

2007-05-31 Thread jeff martin
K2 #5471 was completed without incident on Sunday, May
27th. First QSO was at 8:30PM PDST...I tried to get
done before the 40 meter ECN, but just missed.

I started the project in May of '06, but due to work
obligations, had to postpone operations on the RF
board ...I finally told myself I was going to use the
3 day weekend to try to finish the K2. I think I put
in 2 good 10 hour days finishing the last 3/4s of the
RF board, etc. What a blast! And...I had absolutely no
problems with the K2 during testing and
alignment...everything worked just as advertised, a
definite tribute to the fine engineering and great
assembly manual created by the Elecraft team.

I might add that use of Spectrogram during filter cal
and adjustment of IF gain (L34) really made the
process easy...the visual feedback is hard to beat for
making the process understandable and the results are
gratifying. Thanks to all who provided information on
the alignment topics (and all other topics) in this
forum...I felt quite comfortable with the process
before I even started because of all of the
information posted here.

Next up: SSB board, noise blanker, KPA100 ,
tunerhope I can get them done in a little less
time!

Re: [Elecraft] Sony MDR series headphones for KX1

2007-05-31 Thread Chris Kantarjiev
I had a set of the first gen Bose noise cancelling headphones and flew
many many miles with them. They were a godsend ... but the bulk
made them a nuisance.

About two years ago, I went to sealed in-ear buds. These aren't
active noise cancelling, but instead make an excellent seal
in the ear canal and put the driver beyond the seal. Mine are
Etymotics 6i, which were specifically aimed at the iPod and other
MP3 players that don't have a lot of drive. They coil up into a
padded envelope that's 2" x 2" - way better than any cans.

They isolate well enough that I won't exercise outside with them :-)

I don't use these in my shack at home, but have been very
happy with them in the field (I often operate near a
small waterfall).

Shure and Bose also make this kind of earbud; reviews and prices
are all up and down the range. I've only used these and am happy
with the price/performance tradeoff.

The longer one plays in CW contests, particularly the
majors, the easier it is to copy high speed code. Your
observation is another example of a good reason to be
flexible when it comes to speed. I just find it
humorous when I'm doing S&P to listen to some guys
cranking HSC and repeating the exchange 5 or 6 times
before either the QSO is made, or one or the other
gives up in frustration. It's a judgment call fer
sure.

I guess "winning" to me includes not discouraging
newbies or scaring away folks who may not be so
anti-contest if someone takes a little more time with
them. Maybe I can afford to do this as a LP or QRP
operator, certainly contesting is stratified, and
folks have different perspectives and objectives...

I'm getting way too long winded on this Geoff! ;o)

Cheers,

Julius

I think a heads-up contester could pick up more points by slowing down
during those times when the QSO rate has dropped. Better to call one
time at 12 wpm and work a station than to call 10 times at 30 wpm and
work nobody. I've not heard this during a contest however. Seems most

[Elecraft] Appalachian Trail Today around 19:00 UTC

2007-05-31 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

Today I should be on either 15, 20, 30 or 40 meters from the Appalachian
Trail. I was out on the AT on Tuesday and I wound up on either 20 or 40
meters due to propagation. I only need 3 more QSO's from the AT for my 800th
QSO.

I am going out mostly to meet up with Steve, KD1JV, and his hiking pal. I
plan on taking them to get supplies and something to eat. I might be out on
the AT on Friday and Saturday hiking with the guys.

I will start being on the air around 19:00 UTC until Steve shows up. Then I
have to take off for supplies. Look for me around the QRP Freqs.

72 and Thanks,
Ron Polityka

Re: [Elecraft] Sony MDR series headphones for KX1

2007-05-31 Thread Julian G4ILO

The phones I use for listening to music (classical) on my Zune music
player are Sennheiser HD 485s. I have never tried them on the radio.

With the K2 I use a Plantronics gaming headset. This looks very smart
with a fold-down boom mic. With 5V supplied to the mic input via a
resistor this gives ample output to drive the K2 and open the VOX.
Though I only run QRP my antenna is in the loft right above my head
and I have not experienced any RF feedback. More at
http://www.g4ilo.com/k2_headset.html.
