[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2007-07-28 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
Wow, it is already Saturday evening. Sometimes I wish I could get
through my to do list before it expands. However, I thought up more to do
than I could do in a month so I can't possibly get it all done in a few
days away from work :) Such is life. The weather has been pleasant; the
rains have slowed down to the morning mists from the ocean and the
temperatures are in the high 60s to low 70s. I am not sure what it is
like in the valley but I don't think it is much hotter than here.
Soon we have our local airshow where I get to use a microphone for a
day. Now to remember my callsign in voice :) I'll write it down so I can
read it; I think that is the best way. I don't say it very often so I
sometimes forget how. The local NCS on the VHF nets get a kick out of me
stumbling over my callsign. There are a couple who know who it is from
the pause! One of them told me to just say it in Morse and he'd write it
down.
The fox hunt was work this Thursday evening. The western op was easy
but the one out east took nearly an hour to work. Twenty meters was not
carrying his signal very well at first but gradually it got better so by
0220z I was able to hear him plainly. It took a few repetitions to get
the exchange complete though. Tomorrow I hope the bands are better than
they were then.
Relay help will be most welcome since Tom is off basking in the
tropics. He is likely having far too much fun to get on the air! Anyone
with a strong signal may get roped into calling a few CQs tomorrow. Don't
be shy, it is not difficult.

 Tomorrow:

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help)

   Please join us:

Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz
Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz

I use a small piece of heavy bond paper [a bit rough], put it between

I've made small corrections to the island pad capacitance computations
to reflect the copper foil thickness data provided by Grahan, KE9H. The
computed and measured island capacitance does not change, but some
intermediate results do. More details at

I've mentioned the classic book on filters, /Handbook of Filter
Synthesis /by Anatol I. Zverev, but its current cost has been in the
stratosphere. I received an E-mail from Brad, AL4T recently informing me
that a lower cost ($58 at Amazon) paperback edition of Zverev is now
available. If you have any interest in filter design, this book should
be in your home library. Don't be put off by the equations--there's
plenty in there that can be understood with high school math and the
effort of plowing through the more complex bits are very rewarding. I
highly recommend this book. (When I checked early this year, only the
hardback edition was shown, at nearly $300, so a $58 paperback edition

Finally, for those interested in SoftRock receivers, I've added measured
data for a Bourns 600 ohm : 600 ohm isolation transformer,

will work up to 100 KHz if the termination impedance is carefully

Maybe, but I experience the same phenom and do the same thing with key, It
hasn't really been an issue, though. Would be interesting to know what does it
though, I suspected something to do with the flow of info on data bus. I'd
rule out antenna connection in my case because I have seen it on both ants and
all bands and power settings. I'd bet a slight tweak on a NB or AGS setting

The question I would ask is how any radios manage to get built *with* the
support of that school..;-)

I don't know the financials nor the actual risks. And it's not my company.
(I'd by Elecraft stock if I could, btw).

But when you look at the pre-K3 Elecraft products, the company's reputation
and repeatedly-proven track record, I'd call it more of a slam-dunk situation.

I sort of agree and sort of disagree.

I don't know if anyone other than the Elecraft team could have given us the
K3 - or the K2, the K1, the KX1you get the idea. Maybe there *are* other
folks out there who could have - but they didn't. Eric, Wayne and the rest of
the team *did*.

One of the key elements of the Elecraft story is that the team blends their
own genius, experience and resources with the feedback from the amateur radio
community - both Elecraft customers and others. None of their products is the
result of ivory-tower design! The process includes those who will buy, build
and use the rigs.

Part of that process is sorting through the gripes and snipes and figuring
out what can be included and what can't. Sure, a band-scope would be nice - but
at what cost, in size, dollars and performance? All designs are compromises,
and deciding what to trade off is one of the most difficult parts of any
design, because no matter what decision you make, some folks won't like it.

The thing I keep seeing in the "complaints" is that they're about minor
things, not major ones. And often they turn into educational opportunities: no
band
stacking registers? Not a problem, the K3 has something much better.

Another part of the process is that Elecraft products aren't really meant to
be direct competition to other ham rigs. By that I mean they are built to a
different paradigm, one that some will like and some won't. Remember when the
K2
appeared, almost a decade ago? Who woulda thunk that a *kit* that cost almost
$600 and in its basic form was QRP CW only would ever sell? Particularly one
from an unknown new company with no advertising?

6000+ K2s later, it seems a slam-dunk

RE: [Elecraft] Second call: K2 broken after KPA100 mod

2007-07-28 Thread Steve Kallal
Don,

Where is my more complete reply:

The problem appears to be related to something loose aroud the MCU chip on
the Control Board. If I put a lot of pressure on the top of the MCU chip,
the ELECrAFTt message progresses to the frequency readout. This is with the
Control Panel fully mounted and the KAF2 board installed. The connector
cable to the KAT2 and KIO2 are disconnected for now. There are still some
strange things, but at least the unit responds to front panel input.

The pressure I refer to is with my fingers pressing down vertically.
Remember the Control Board is installed vertically. The pressure is along
the top row of pins. I also can use the foam handle of a pair of pliers, in
case any electrical connection is made from my fingers touching the MCU
chip.

So far I've remove the MCU chip, with my wrist grounded, and touched up all
of the solder connections on the socket. I also touched up all of the solder
connections on the pins on that connect to the RF board.

Again my K2 is serial number 2289. It has the mods from the document titled:
"UPGRADING THE ELECRAFT K2 TO REVISION B". Also has mods from documents
titled "ELECRAFT K2 REVISION 2 FIRMWARE" and "Elecraft K2 Keying
Modifications Instructions". Those documents are with the paper included
with this K2.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Second call: K2 broken after KPA100 mod

Steve,

There is no direct relationship between your symptoms and what you intended
to accomplish. So this is something that inadvertently happened along the
way.

The first thing to do is inspect the control board visually - in most cases
an unsoldered or poorly soldered connection is to blame for behavior like
that. Move things around a bit to see if you can make it change from
working to not working. Also check the soldering of the connectors at the
front of the RF Board - they provide a path between the front panel and the
control board. Be certain the microprocessor (Control Board U6) is properly
seated in its socket and no pins are bent under the chip (you may have to
remove it to check for bent under pins - use good anti-static measures if
you remove it).

If the problem does not reveal itself visually, the next step is to do DC
voltage measurements on the control board and possibly the Front Panel
board. Compare to the DC Voltage chart in the back of the manual.

Since you purchased a used K2, the level may be important - please let us
know the serial number and state of updating that it may have had.
I am sorry I cannot provide a more concrete answer, but it does have nothing
to do with the KPA100 installation at the point where you are now.

[Elecraft] Need local K2 help in Southern Cal...

2007-07-28 Thread Steve Kallal
Hi,

I need someone locally in Southern California who can help me with my K2. I
made a slight mod to the Control Board per the KPA100 manual and now the MCU
appears intermittent. I need someone who can put my K2 on their bench, with
me present, and help me find the a probable loose connection or short. I can
get the front panel to respond if I put a certain amount of pressure on the
MCU chip.

The problem started after I removed pin 4 from P4 per the KPA100 manual. I
must have stressed the Control Board somehow. I've already touched up many
of the solder joints with a hot iron.

I am looking for a different set of eyes. I don't want to leave to K2, but
take it with me when I leave.

RE: [Elecraft] OT: Keying contacts - Clairification

2007-07-28 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Kent K9ZTV, made the point off-line that burnishing (rubbing to smooth or
polish) contacts on modern keys might not be a good idea. He observed that
any abrasive rubbing or polishing might damage special finishes or alloys
that the manufacturer may have used on them.

I was speaking of my half-century old keys that have brass (or bronze)
contacts that have been repeatedly ground and burnished to remove pits and
burns caused by arcing when keying high voltage lines in old transmitters.
As John mentioned, a reasonable current through those contacts actually
served to help keep them clean. Modern very low voltage/low current keying
circuits don't do that and the contacts easily become intermittent as they
collect a coat of oxides and dirt. Such contacts need no such delicate care
as perhaps modern contacts might, although it'd be foolish damage them
further needlessly. (Some old keys do have silver contacts which should be
treated with care, especially if they're plated and not solid silver. Silver
oxide is a good conductor, so even if they appear black they are still good
electrical contacts. If they become intermittent it's not because they are
oxidized but because they are actually dirty with a film covering the
silver. Very gentle wiping should restore good contact.)

On my old keys with their bronze contacts, burnishing is definitely in order
if nothing else works and they've survived that treatment hundreds of times
over the decades. Recently I've found that De-Oxit does the job even better
as I described.

If I bought a brand new key I'd check with the manufacturer about how they
recommend cleaning the contacts because, sooner or later, they're sure to
need it.

RE: [Elecraft] To The K3 Design and Production Team

2007-07-28 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Reminds me of Kelly Martin's famous "Skunk Works" at Lockheed Aircraft where
a small team, isolated by national secrecy working strictly on a "need to
know" basis, successfully developed the first prototype American jet fighter
in only 80 days, then went on to develop such legendary aircraft as the U2,
the SR-17 "Blackbird" and the F117 aircraft.

One of Kelly's famous "14 rules" of success was:

"The number of people having any connection with the project must be
restricted in an almost vicious manner... "

Maybe you've heard the old saying "Too many Chefs spoil the Broth" or words

to that effect. Many years of developing highly sophisticated space
hardware
taught me and many in my field that nothing can compete with a compact and
highly motivated development team. In fact the best ones depend on a manager

who can effectively deal with cost so interference from "top" management is

minimized. Anyone who has worked in this environment doesn't have to think
long
about the Elecraft Team and how they do what they do.

RE: [Elecraft] OT: Keying contacts

2007-07-28 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I use De-Oxit. A drop between the contacts is allowed to sit there a few
minutes, then the excess is removed by closing the contacts on a bit of
paper. It solves the "dirty contact" problem for me. One treatment lasts
many months.

My second favorite method is to gently close the contacts on a bit of paper
and pull it out to "burnish" the contacts but, for me, that doesn't work
nearly as well or last as long as the De-Oxit treatment.

On the topic of keys, paddles, and bugs, I wonder if members of the list
would tell
me how they keep key contacts clean and reliable. Do you regularly burnish
key
contacts? Do you use a chemical cleaner (e.g. de-oxit)? Do you maintain a
minimum keying current? Or do you simply never have a problem?

Please share your wisdom and experience.

A single sheet of white paper cut into strips placed between the

clean the contacts without damage. Run a strip a few times through an
you will see the results. I use just under the amount of pressure that

[Elecraft] PSK 31

2007-07-28 Thread David Robertson
I have had my K2 for over 6 months now and really enjoy it.
I really use it a lot on PSK 31 mode and the reports coming back are a very
clean signal.
I use both HRD's PSK program (PSK Deluxe) and MIXW.
Both programs use the CAT settings to totally control the rig.
The audio interface was one I designed.
Here is the issue:

When I operate with HRD's PSK software upon occasion the K2 seems to stay
locked in transmit after finishing a transmittion. The MIXW software doesn't
seem to present this problem. under any conditions.

Is someone else having this problem?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Problem

Fabio,

I cannot be specific, but the most probable area causing that trouble is
the area of Q2 and Q3 (those direct the BFO signal either to the
balanced modulator in SSB mode or back to the RF board for CW) or the
balanced modulator U5.

Check carefully to be certain diodes D5, D4 and D3 are inserted in the
proper direction and in the correct holes.

[Elecraft] RE: OT Dell Production Delays

2007-07-28 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Simon:

WARNING: MISCELLANEOUS RAMBLINGS FOLLOW

Anyone who places an order for and PAYS for a not-yet-released product
should understand that s/he is entering the DANGER ZONE. Anything is
possible, especially DELAYS and CHANGES in specs. To place a
prepayment or deposit on a new product and expect everything to go
"smoothly" is simply being naïve.

Folks always have the other options to

1. wait until the product is released
2. wait until it has has received favorable reviews by those who
already have it
3. wait X months after release until it is "proven."

We each take our own risks. We each determine what level of risk any
decision we make carries (whether we realize it or not).

And BLOGS (including this one) tend to bring out both the best and
worst in people. Once the ball (opinions) get rolling in one
direction (currently "bad" for Dell), there is always the snowball (me
too) effect. People LOVE to complain...ESPECIALLY in public.

Luckily (at least in this country), one can always cancel if the
product is not delivered within 30 days without penalty.

In theory, the K3 might not be ready for Prime Time for another 6
months (yes, I did say IN THEORY). What would be the Elasticity of
Patience (borrowing from economics) for the K3 before folks get
"upset?"

For me, since there is NOTHING else out there that I would rather have
to replace my current radio (that I can afford), I'm willing to take
my chances (of which there are potentially many).

That said, I can "feel your pain" in waiting for your new Dell.

[Elecraft] RE: K2 drops receive level

2007-07-28 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
Tim:

I'm no K2 guru, but what you describe is classic of a
poor/intermittent connection somewhere on the way to the antenna.
I've experienced this with many radios, going back many decades. The
"dit" (transmitting) somehow reestablishes a better connection at the
point of failure.

This might be at any coax connector (from the back of the radio all
the up to the antenna).

Try tracing your coax and connections along the way. Open up all
contact points and "clean" them up (emery cloth, board, your favorite
contact cleaner, etc). At the antenna (and elsewhere too), be sure
your connections are not only clean, but tight.

I'll leave the suggestions for what to "trace for" inside the K2 up to
the K2-masters.

The only problems - production delays, poor customer feedback, those who
