[Elecraft] K3 External 2nd receiver with KXV3 and 6m pre-amp?

2008-07-29 Thread Paul Bradbeer
Dave,

I'm not using an external 2nd receiver but I too have gone for an ARR
preamp. Mine was despatched a week ago, so should be here soon - I went
for the P50VD (i.e. not the Gaesfet one) because I figured I didn't need
so much gain, and the input IP3 figures are very close. It looks like a
neat mechanical design too. I'll let you know how I get on..

[Elecraft] [K2] KSB2 filter: unequal terminations - why?

2008-07-29 Thread dj6ev

Hello,
this is not a problem but simply a mystery for me.

After having successfully finished my K2-#5776 (Gary and Scott, thanks a lot
for your fast help!), I built up the KSB2 board - it works basically fine.
However, when I studied the diagram of the KSB2 and the RF board, I stumbled
over the fact that T1 and T2 on the KSB2 have very different turns ratios
(7:22 vs. 22:4). Because the ladder filter is symmetric, it requires the
same termination on both sides (here, ~1500 Ohms). Coming from a source
impedance of 150 Ohms, T1 is duly transforming it to 1500 Ohms.

However, at the filter output, T2 transforms the 1500 Ohms down to only 50
Ohms.
(BTW, this down-transformation could very well be the reason for the
unusually high insertion loss of 7db as listed in the SSBCAPKT document.
I measured abt. 3db with an external setup, using the original xtals, caps,
and FT37-43 transformers with identical turns ratios).
So far so good - but this is NOT looking into 50 Ohms on the RF board (T7)
as one would expect.

T7 has a turns ratio of 5:20. Looking backwards from the input of the IF amp
MC1350 with an input impedance of ~3000 Ohms (according to the datasheet),
this generates an impedance of over 180 Ohms at the 12 terminals of T7 - a
significant mismatch for the filter.

Does anybody have a clue what the reason for this arrangement is? Because of
time constraints, I could not yet take RF measurements of the filter/IF path
(I dont't trust Spectrogram measurements - too many unknown variables :-)) )
.

73,
Horst, dj6ev

P.S. I am not using the original 7-pole filter but a homebrew 8-pole ladder
on a tiny subboard with SMD caps. The transformers are on BN43-2402 cores
instead of FT37-43, with identical ratios on both sides (6:17 / 17:6 turns -
because of lower xtal inductances / filter impedance of approx. 1200 Ohms).
Works nicely on the KSB2.

[Elecraft] K3: BW direction?

2008-07-29 Thread DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL
OK...my 2 cents.

I just looked at the Yaseu 2000 instruction manual on line. To narrow
the bandwidth, you turn the knob counter-clockwise (and vice versa).

Some Kenwood radios (eg, TS940) have a VBT control (variable bandwidth
tuning). Turning the knob counter-clockwise makes the BW narrower -
and that radio is 20 years old, so this is far from something new.

So the K3 seems fine to me!

[Elecraft] Help with PSK

I am trying (and failing miserably) to set up my K3 to work PSK31 mode.

I am using a Microham USB Microkeyer II and my normal Logger 32 software
which I have used for aged with my MP running very fb.

The outgoing tones from my K3 dont sound right and a near neighbour
says my signal is very bad

unreadable and very broad.

In the K3, I have the compression set to 0 the mike gain set to 0. I
am in Data mode and using DATA MD havePSK D showing - 31 bps.

My K3 ALC meter is still showing almost full ALC (according to the
meter) with almost now poer output (turned right down).
I have the TX knob on my Microkeyer set at zero and within Logger
soundcard - psk window, have the output set right back, well below the
settings for the MP!

I am receiving PSK no problem at all. The radio is connected to my
computer via the serial port on the rear...

I can run RTTY FSK without any problem whatsoever.

I think i need a little guidance here...

2008-07-29 Thread Greg - AB7R
Tom,

For now, the only way to run PSK-D is with the paddles connected to the paddle
input on the
K3, or using a terminal, such as the one on the K3 Utility program. If you are
using
soundcard software for PSK you need to HOLD DATA MD (AFX button) and select
DATA-A using the
VFO B knob. Do that and set up your output per the K3 Operating Tips page and
you should be
good to go. When in Data mode the CMP is automatically clamped down a zero.

I've had one of their auto-switching mast-mount preamps for about five years.

Yes, PITCH would seem like a good choice for the signal pitch

Re: [Elecraft] Help with PSK

2008-07-29 Thread John Trager

Tom,

You have to use DATA A with a soundcard program such as HRD or MultiPSK.
Here is what I do:

Turn off Tx ALC in menu. I use VOX instead of the PTT line. Adjust VOX and
ANTIVOX as needed. Adjust LINE IN and audio output from soundcard so that
you get the power output that you want to use (no more than 50 watts with
the 100 watt K3). Use the K3's power meter to adjust. With my HT OMEGA
Claro+ soundcard, I use a LINE setting of 3 and a low output on my soundcard
(about 1/3 from full output). It doesn't take much. Of course you will see
no ALC reading, because it is turned off. The K3 will automatically go into
Tx when it detects audio input... why use PTT if your don't have to. Use
1500Hz center frequency with software, and adjust bandwidth as needed. You
can go as low as 50Hz with PSK31.

The flow isn't at all clear to me either, but Elecraft DOES have schematics on

I am hoping to receive the

before hooking up the pre-amp.

It's only an issue if the preamp input sees an HF antenna that's receiving lots
of RF. One thing I did was put a good 6M BPF in front of it (I used the ICE
unit
that is narrowly tuned to the bottom of 6M). That helped.

Do you know if AAR include protection diodes as standard now?

I doubt it -- their response to me was rather negative, and they did it only
because I insisted because I was tired of sending it back for warranty repair!
BTW -- mine is also the GasFET version.

I've had one of their auto-switching mast-mount preamps for about five

Used it inline with a 746 when I was back in Chicago. It blew up three

Brett,

I'm not suggesting that offset pitch and sidetone pitch be different.

I'm suggesting that sometimes you want to adjust this pitch by
listening to the sidetone and sometimes you want to adjust it by
listening to the received signal. Currently you can't hear the signal
while you adjust PITCH-- the received audio is blocked.

Why would you want to vary the signal pitch? Because a different pitch
can provide better copy under different reception condtions. But it's
pretty hard to tell what that optimum pitch might be without listening
to the signal as you adjust it, right?

Now, you can vary the VFO in order to change the signal's pitch, but
then you have detuned it. I want to vary the pitch of a signal without
detuning it. The K3 can do this, only it doesn't let us hear the

Which brings us to the old fashioned way to adjust the pitch of the RX
signal - RIT. It keeps the TX on the same frequency and as long as you
don't adjust it too far, the signal will stay in the passband. Better
yet, combine it with an IF Shift and you can go farther with RIT while
keeping the signal where you want it in the passband.

Do I remember correctly? Didn't the TS-930s have a CW Offset control
that would adjust sidetone pitch, TX-RX offset and IF Shift at the same
time? I used to want one of those rigs something bad. Then I borrowed
one for a weekend and decided I liked my TenTec Corsair II better.

[Elecraft] K3 6m pre-amp

2008-07-29 Thread John Klewer
To enhance the 6 meter performance of my K3 I built the U310
preamplifier as described on N6CA's website:

http://www.ham-radio.com/n6ca/50MHz/50appnotes/U310.html

Tuned up on an HP8970A noise figure meter it gives 11.2 dB gain and
NF=1.3 dB.

The receiver's performance on weak signals was significantly improved. I
already had the parts but cost should not exceed $30.00 to duplicate
this preamphard to beat.

I have not done measurements on the radio/preamp combination to
determine any negative effect on the receiver performance but the K3,
which always performed well in the presence of strong signals, continues
to do so.

Except, your offset is 400 Hz; but some combination of QRM, noise, his

operate as a CW Pitch control so one knob could vary all required

keeping the signal where you want it in the passband.

Keith,

Say you have managed to tune in a very weak signal to the very
optimum... no further adjustment on the K3 controls could improve it.
Except, your offset is 400 Hz; but some combination of QRM, noise, his
code speed, keying characteristics and your own psycho-acoustics would
make it easier to copy at, say, 800 Hz. Turning the VFO (or RIT) 400
Hz will put him out of the passband (then use SHIFT, etc, i know...).

Why not just be able to vary the pitch; the K3 keeps the signal
centered in the passband. This seems like the obvious simple solution.

I wonder if it would be possible to just have received audio when
PITCH is engaged. Then we could turn the sidetone volume to zero and
observe the pitch variation of the received signals directly. It is a
little clumsy but I wouldn't mind and I don't think this feature
would upset anyone with more control functions, etc.

RE: [Elecraft] Help with PSK

2008-07-29 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

There is no problem with the shield of the USB cable.

If you want to generate AFSK-PSK31 with the Microham MKII, read
 http://www.microham-usa.com/Downloads/MKII_RFI_Fix.pdf There
is a problem with the shield of the USB-cable.

This fix applies only audio from microphones connected to the
microKEYER II (RF into the mic preamp in microKEYER II) and
makes no difference with audio generated in the microKEYER II
soundcard.

If you are going to do PSK31 (or any audio based digital mode)
you must use AFSK A or DATA A. AFSK A is nominally LSB with
center frequency equal to (MARK+SPACE)/2. DATA A is nominally
USB with center frequency equal to 1500 Hz.

Typical operating conditions for PSK1 and AFSK in AFSK A or
DATA A would have the Lin In level of the K3 at 10 and the TX
output of microKEYER adjusted to give five bars on the K3
ALC meter.

I have the TX knob on my Microkeyer set at zero and within Logger

Another 2 cents...

My all-time old favorite rig, the even older Kenwood TS830S' VBT had the
counter-clockwise turn = narrower bandwidth.

So, Elecraft's implementation is exactly what I like. It brings back fond

- USER-DEFINED “NORM” VALUES are now referred to as NORM1/2 rather

mode).

- FLASH MEMORY INITIALIZATION corrected to prevent spurious “FPF LOAD
PENDING” messages. If this message does appear unexpectedly, tap any

[Elecraft] Using Voice Files along with Mike Input on a K3

2008-07-29 Thread Ed Steeble

I tried to use a K3 in the IOTA contest on SSB but ran into a problem.
I couldn't figure out how to satisfactory key the K3 with wave
files from N1MM Logger and also use a Heil Headset. Reading the manual
it appears that you can have audio input from ONLY the front panel, rear

panel, OR line in. The wave files were coming via the line in and the
mike via the Front panel. Did I over look something?

A fellow team member and I considered paralleling the mike and sound
card input but we didn't want a live mike while wave files were playing.
The Elecraft web site says that their digital voice recorder (KDVR3) is
not yet shipping. For now, does this mean that that I have to use my
MFJ voice keyer (configured for a Kenwood radio) if I want audio files
AND mike capabilities?

When using a K3, how are others handling SSB contests?

You can have either mic plus LINE input active at the same time. See
recent firmware release notes.

 Hi John,

There is a bug in the version on the Elecraft site that is causing this
 problem on some systems.

Try downloading this file and give it a try:

 http://sight.net/K3/K3Util/6-26-2008/Mac/K3UtilityOSX1163.zip

Let me know if this cures the problem and I'll get this version posted on
 the Elecraft site.

Using a Mac Mini I have been able to do firmware updates
 many times however I was
greeted with the following error message today:

An exception of class NilObjectException was not
 handled. The application must
 shut down

This appeared after downloading the latest mac version
 downloader utility from
the Elecraft site and dropping it into my application
 folder double-clicking.

 Any advice is appreciated..

 Thanks

Try clicking the refresh button on your browser, or purge your internet
cache. You're probably looking at a cached copy of the list of files in the
directory.

2008-07-29 Thread Brett Howard
You're probably still going to have a live mic during the transmitting
of a wave file but I don't see that as that big of a deal...

Re: [Elecraft] Using Voice Files along with Mike Input on a K3

2008-07-29 Thread Dave LaBat
I ran into this as well. It was a bit tricky but here is what worked:

Writelog as DVK
Cable from headphone out of soundboard to the line in jack on back of K3

Now the tricky part: Select LINE IN as input first! Then set the gain as you
would a mike gain, otherwise the K3 sees zero input from the line in!

Select mike Front panel, go to next menu option and select Mike + line

It worked great! There was other issues with the K3 but probably because it
is an infant.. a new PA is on the way (bummer)

Although fewer sunspots have been recorded during this Solar Minimum than for
