Re: [Elecraft] K3 Software
Hi Tom, Everyone will answer that question differently dependent on which feature set is most important to them and what hardware they have installed in their K3. Have a look at: ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware/beta/hfwnotes.rtf From these notes, you can determine which release has the features that are important to you. I keep all previous 'known' firmware releases on my hard drive in separate folders and also download the latest beta release. This allows me to experiment with the latest, whilst having a known version to fall back on. This method takes all 'risk' out of the equation and allows you to contribute to firmware development. At the moment my 'known' release is V2.23 which I have played with for a couple of weeks without problems and would recommend for a basic K3. There have been a flurry of releases recently introducing new firmware and fixing old bugs which seems to be coming to a head before formal release (currently V2.34). I wouldn't bother with the current latest formal release (V2.02) as it seems to be completely out of date. [Elecraft] K3 - DSP ringing on CW SSB
Hi everyone, I have had my K3 almost a week and I am very happy with it :-) I do however hear what I would describe as a ringing sound (and always), perhaps caused by the DSP. When I tune to a CW signal with any filter configuration although less pronounced using 250Hz filter the tone of the signal is good. But when I tune away from it and QSY up the band the tone gets higher in frequency I can hear what I would call ringing and it is very slight but enough for it to be anoying. This does not always happen and may be if I press a combination of keys like NR, NB, WIDTH, SHIFT it causes this to go away, I haven't worked out if it is indeed a combination of keys or not. I've tried a different set of headphones just in case the headphones (Heil) were rattling but it is the same. This happens too on SSB as you tune away from the signal and is randomly there or not. Perhaps there are settings which optimize this? I have the RX EQ set up to cut the last 2 high frequencies off by 6dB and 10dB but it seems to make no difference how I set these. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK RTTY
Jim Talens wrote: I am having a problem getting my K3 working on RTTY in the FSK mode using a serial-to-USB converter. Using MMTTY and not the Belkin (now unavailable) converter, it just won't function, even with extfsk.dll installed. However, it does work fine using COM1 and a direct serial connection to the K3. When using COM8 and the serial-USB converter it does not work. Most of the MMTTY information is somewhat outdated, perhaps, given the bulk of information about it dates to 2005-2005. What are others using to get going on FSK using a serial-USB converter? I don't have an answer but I will be interested to read the responses. I don't think FSK using a USB to serial converter will be very satisfactory, if it works at all. The serial data must be converted to a packet stream that is sent over the USB bus, which must in principle be able to time share it with other USB devices. Therefore the timing of the signal changes you are using to produce FSK will not be exactly as generated by the software, and any RTTY that is generated could be difficult to copy. The USB to serial driver has probably not been written to cope with the idea of the serial control lines being used for a purpose other than hardware flow control. Why not just use AFSK? Non-matched filter offsets will result in a difference of about +/- 1 Hz between the two synthesizers, which may be heard as a “beat note” under some conditions. http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KRX3_Subreceiver_Install__Operate_Rev_A_WEB.pdf 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/KRX3-questions-tp793412p793982.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I'd wait until the latest beta (now 2.34) has been out there a week or two and then consider it a de-facto official release and use it. [Elecraft] K3 Newbie
I've been a subscriber to this list since the day I ordered the K3 back in March 2008. The factory assembled and tested radio is due to arrive next week. I'd like to hear about any issues previously listed here I need to read before next week. Please respond to me OFF-LIST as I am sure this request is not interesting to the old timers. No sense in disrupting the flow of current info with my silly (perhaps, even lazy) request. I need all the time-saving help I can get since rewiring the station to integrate the K3 in the first operating position will take some time. Contest season is upon us. I'm using N1MM software for contests with Logic 8/TRX Manager for daily contacts and moving the FT-1000MP to the second position. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - DSP ringing on CW SSB
Perhaps I don't understand the meaning of the term 'ringing' but it seems to me that on any radio when you use a narrow filter you hear a sort of ringing noise that has a pitch of the frequency the filter is centered on. It's an inevitable result of the fact that you are not hearing an even distribution of noise across the whole audio spectrum, but a narrow segment of noise whose amplitude distribution follows the shape of the filter. [Elecraft] KRX3 in diversity and beatnotes
(was subject KRX3 Questions) Thanks Bill, I think I have to restate the question for the group. Just suppose that main and sub receivers have filters with different off-sets. It is stated that in some cases a 1Hz beatnote occurs due to rounding errors. Question is: How often does the 1 Hz beat 'note' occur? Is it on almost all frequencies, or is it only on say 10 frequencies in a band or is it there in a part of a band (for axample the beatnote is there from 1.812.009 until 1.815.004) (Yes, it will depend on band and on filter offsets but I'd like to hear some experiences from guys who have tried it. Give me the facts :-) ) Thanks in advance, 73 Arie PA3A ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. I experienced the same problem with my Orion but it had a constant 2.3 Hz offset. It's absolutely unnecessary to use only 8-pole filters in the K3 for diversity. In the case previously cited here by Doug N6TQS, his 2.7k offsets were only off by 10 Hz so it would not cause any problem to set both to the same offset (i.e. 10 Hz out of 2700 Hz is 0.4% and not significant). Don't be deceived in thinking 8-pole filters actually have zero Hz offsets...they don't! Several others (W0YK for one) have reported narrow CW 8-pole filters with offsets of 40-80 Hz. In a 250 Hz (actually 370 Hz) 8-pole CW filter, this can be significant (i.e. 80 Hz out of 370 Hz is ~20%). Also, if you go through the process to zero them, there is no guarantee that any two 8-pole CW filters will actually have the same offset. When I ordered my new K3 with KRX3, I did not order matched 2.7k and 500 Hz filters, thinking that the 2.7ks would not be far enough off to be significant and hoping the 500s would be about the same since they would probably come from the same manufacturing batch. The 2.7ks were off by 30 Hz so I split the difference and set both offsets to a number between, as Lyle suggested. The 500s just happened to be identical. If they had been off significantly (e.g. 50 Hz), I might have returned one and asked for a matched filter at the additional $30 cost. My KRX3 works perfectly in diversity with no beat using only 5-pole filters. 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/KRX3-questions-tp793412p794076.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K3 - DSP ringing on CW SSB
I'm not disagreeing with Julian at all but wanted to toss out some related ideas. The noise you hear does become colored as you crank down a properly designed DSP filter--and centered on the filter freq. On the other hand some poorly designed filters are excited by energy near the center freq and do ring. I have a rice box reviewed in a recent QST, and the review pointed out the filter is so bad at 100Hz and below it becomes unusable. A little noise crackle and ringing like a bell begins and does not drop much for a few seconds--tough on high speed cw. Another phenomenon to consider is aliasing. This has popped up in a few versions of Orion software causing ghost signals to appear in the subreceiver. I was recently amused to find an audio discussion of this in which someone commented about a ghost band playing. Here's a link http://www.dsprelated.com/showmessage/24519/1.php . Sure you could probably do that if the offsets between the 500 and 200 are not too far off. You'll probably want to set the 500 equal to the 200 rather than vice versa if they aren't identical (i.e. a shift in a 500 Hz BW is not as critical as the same shift in a 200). I'm not at home now but I recall my 500s are both -0.84 and my 200 is -0.91. If I wanted to try what you described I would set both 500s to -0.91 since a shift of 70 Hz is still not unreasonable in ~500 Hz total BW. The magicians at Elecraft are now at work on an improved DUAL PB which will allow more flexibility in the context WIDTH setting, which would accomplish somewhat similar results (but the context BW is attenuated by -24 dB versus the focus BW). 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/KRX3-questions-tp793412p794215.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - DSP ringing on CW SSB
Thank you all for the replies. I would just like to clear up a few things: I'm going to call it DISTORTION and not ringing as ringing is more related to crystal filters as G4ILO pointed out and it is not filter ringing which I have recognized in some previous rigs I've owned. I just didn't know how to call it. The distortion happens irrespective of filter used, even with the 2.7KHz and the WIDTH opened right up it is still there. The effects AFX makes no difference. I am using stereo headphones. I don't have a waterfall program... can someone suggest on please. I've noticed when listening to my desired CW signal at a beat frequency of 650Hz the signal is clear only occasionally distorts but when tuning the same signal and moving up in frequency at about twice 650Hz (1300Hz) it starts to distort. On SSB it is more pronounced as you tune. I hope there will be a fix for this. Does anyone else suffer from this? I have read the PSK thread but I'm more interested in CW users in particular. I was recently amused to find an audio discussion of this in which someone commented about a ghost band playing. Here's a link http://www.dsprelated.com/showmessage/24519/1.php . I would really be surprised if the K3 had any of these problems. So far I haven't bought one but I am creeping up to it. [Elecraft] K2 KNB2 MOD WORKS GRRREAT!
I just got around to adding the KNB2 mod prompted by Joe Planisky KB8AP and originally designed by Stefan Steger DL7MAJ.WOW is all I can say and a BIG THANK YOU Stefan. I must have missed this one. I read a lot in the K2 posts where many people like Joe and the rest of us have put up with KNB2's that don't do a thing. WELL THATS OVER. Try this mod and your K2 life will be changed forever. I can say now that I've done it, the K2 NB works almost as good as my Mark V does and thats a lot. The mod adds a 0.1 uF capacitor between the emitter of Q2 and ground. I chose to tack solder the 104, from K2 terminology, from Q2 emitter to a ground post on the plug just above it. Works great.I just wanted to re-post this because I know a lot of you K2 users are not going to get the most from your K2s NB unless you do this mod. Then again, maybe all of you already have. :-) 73's Tony K2ZLS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. That is a very good idea Joe. I will try but it will need pull up resistors fitting in the KRC2. Also because I use transverters I will have to solder 4 more wires and it will need two multicore cables soldering onto that 15 way din and that is very difficult because of the size with a connector designed for only one cable. I will also need to put an ALC line in there once the ALC +- issue is finalised. I had hoped only to have the K3 linked simply through the KRC2 to my transverters (like for my K2). [Elecraft] XV432 Frequency and Power Stability
Hi All, I finished assembling a XV432 transverter and seem to have a little problem with both power and frequency stability. After going through the alignment steps, the power starts dropping from 20W down to about 10 after sending CW into a dummy load for 20 seconds or so. During this time, the frequency drifts about 100 Hz. (Enough to detect a pitch change in another receiver.) I installed Q1 using the Teflon spacer. I have the crystal oven installed and the transverter was powered on for about 30 minutes or so before I aligned it. (JP9 is on 4-5.) The part values appear to be correct. The problem appears if I use a 5W source or a 1 milliwatt source. (Changing JP3,4,5,6 accordingly.) My radio is a SDR-5000A. The power module doesn't get warm. I do NOT have the extra 5 turn coil and the 10pf capacitor installed on the power module. (Rev C1 errata.) Has anybody else had this problem and if so, how did you fix it. Thanks! Thanks, 73, Dick [EMAIL PROTECTED] + The best time saving advice I can give is to not try to do it all in one night. Fatige, cutting corners, skipping steps ( on purpose or by accident ) are usually contributors to a rework - redo operation. When you un-pack the radio and check the packing 1) unwrap / remove from plastic bags very carefully and gently, snagging a small SMD can result in timely delays to replace parts. 2) Unpack on a cleared large work area. It can be very frustrating to have a missing part only to find it a month later kicked under the coffee table as it fell from a larger bag. 3) Inspect ALL packing materials and bags for possible separated parts before you place packing in separate containers - ALSO it helps to put all discarded packing and bags boxes in shipping container and do not discard until the rig is completed and operating properly. 4) Stop to reread what you have done before proceeding to next step, compare to pictures diagrams and don't be afraid to ask online if you are unsure of next step or meaning. You should be able to have it on the air in two 4 - 5 hour sessions. Having had to wait 4 months, you probably had time to pre-read the assembly, manual, if not, at least do a close scan of the assembly manual. Be familiar with the Operators Manual and the tables used for setup and configuration, you will spend most of your time learning that after the assembly is complete. One last thing - take a few pictures so you can savor the moment later on - enjoy 73, AL WA6VNN (#31 FWIW) **It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. [Elecraft] RE: K3 FSK RTTY - IT WORKS!
Thanks to those who responded to my inquiry about getting the K3 to work on FSK using MMTTY and a serial-USB converter. I discovered one pilot error and can offer one suggestion. 1. I did not see the little window called EXTFSK pop up because it was under all the other windows. Normally, a newly invoked window shows up atop the others in XP. This one did not. I discovered it when I was shutting down the computer one-window at a time. Now I see it's plainly accessible by left-clicking on MMTTY on the task bar. MMTTY is one choice and the EXTFSK is the other. Once accessed, I selected COM8 (as I had in the MMTTY setup) and then tried the various combinations of checked boxes until I found one that worked [TXD for FSK output and RTS for PTT output]. So the problem is resolved. 2. The serial-USB converter I bought yesterday at a local retailer works fine for this purpose. The MMTTY-specified Belkin converter is therefore not the only one that works, which is good because it has not been sold for a couple of years. Perhaps newer serial-USB converters have evolved or been changed, I have no idea. The one I bought is an IOGEAR GU2C232A and I suspect there are others that work as well. This one was $30. RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 questions
The magicians at Elecraft are now at work on an improved DUAL PB which will allow more flexibility in the context WIDTH setting, which would accomplish somewhat similar results (but the context BW is attenuated by -24 dB versus the focus BW). I've tried the updated context filter in beta 2.34. The problem for me is that the context area is attenuated more than I would like and the peak (50 Hz?) is a bit narrow. I would like to try the transmit antenna on the subreceiver with a relatively wide filter (600 - 1000 Hz) to get an idea of the overall activity and a low noise (Beverage, K9AY, phased array, etc.) receive antenna on the main antenna with a narrow (e.g. 200Hz) filter to focus on the desired signal. 73, ... This way I can still use the 1.8k/200 for severe QRM situations in non-diversity and the 2.7k/500 for diversity and/or other situations. With some thought would it not be possible to get 500 and 200 Hz filters with matched offsets so one could use bandwidth diversity in addition to antenna diversity? I will not be able to try that with my first K3 when that KRX3 arrives since the existing 500 and 250 Hz filters have different offsets but I will look at the 200 Hz filter in the second rig to see if it is close enough to the -790 Hz (measured in radio #1, specified for radio 2) to be useful. N3JT said: 2. Jim, The Belkin converter mentioned in the MMTTY Help file appears to be the only one that will work without the EXTFSK add-on, and according to anecdotal reports this Belkin converter does not work at all under Windows XP or newer. However, almost any USB-to-serial adapter should work with EXTFSK; at least, any USB-to-serial adapter that will work for serial port CW and/or PTT will also work for FSK using EXTFSK. One setting you will probably need to adjust in MMTTY is in the Setup MMTTY window under the Misc tab. If you are using FSK and have either the second or third radio button under Tx Port selected, you will see a button labelled USB Port. You should click on this button and select option C. Limiting speed. If you leave the default selection A. Normal selected, it is likely that you will find that the PTT line switches back to RX before all of the characters have been sent, truncating your message buffers. 73, Rich VE3KI ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. It was designed to have a response curve tailored for amateur SSB use. The Shure 444 is an excellent ham mic, and should work well with your K2. I'm looking at a 1963 data sheet for it right now (which you can probably find on the Shure website). Black is the hot side of the mic, shield is the return of the mic. The PTT switch does two things. When it's UP (not pushed), it shorts out the mic capsule. When you push it, it un-shorts the capsule and connects White to the Shield. There is also a switch inside the mic base that enables or disables PTT to the White wire. Normal is enabled (that is, PTT works). The original 444 is a high Z mic. Later versions (444D) is switchable highZ - low Z. The switch is in the base, I think. 73, Jim K9YC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Firmware request KRC2
Mike, I have been looking at the KRC2 manual and was reminded that the KRC2 can use serial band decoding. You might want to try it because it seems to be the easiest (but I am still unsure about the 6 meters/60 meters decoding. You will have to set the K3 (and any logging/computer control applications) to work at 4800 bps because right now, the KRC2 can only use that data rate - that could change in the future, but right now it is fixed at 4800. Install jumpers at W9, W10, W11, W15, W16, W20, W21, W22, and W23 to allow operation of a logging program (or other PC application) through the KRC2 and on to the K3 as well as allowing the KRC2 to communicate with the K3. Then install a jumper on W3 to tell the KRC2 to use serial band decoding. I believe that is all you need to do - other than providing power to the KRC2 through its coaxial power jack and connecting the KRC2 J2 connector to the K3 serial port . To connect to the PC, add a serial cable between the KRC2 and the PC - use standard serial straight thru cables. I have not tried this combination, but from my study of the KRC2 manual, it should work just fine. I don't know how 6 meters is decoded, but I believe it may activate the 60 meter KRC2 outputs, with no output available for 60 meters (or maybe they map together - someone else will have to say). Try it and let us know how it works. 73, Don W3FPR Don Wilhelm wrote: Mike, Try it using the AUXBUS control before connecting the BAND0-3 outputs from the ACC connector. If I recall, the AUXBUS control will also activate the 60 meter KRC2 output when 6 meters is selected on the K3. Even if my memory is incorrect, it is worth a try, it is an easy matter to connect the AUXBUS signal from the K3 to the KRC2. 73, Don W3FPR AD6XY wrote: That is a very good idea Joe. [Elecraft] K3 Audio Measurements and Artifacts
I've completed a few K3 receiver audio output measurements today, and added a new page with the data. http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/elecraft_k3_receive_audio.htm I found some curious artifacts in the audio output, including some signal related artifacts around 12 KHz, and at 3.9 and 7.8 KHz. I don't know if these are unique to my K3, or to my test setup, so I welcome other observations. If these artifacts are not unique to my K3 and/or test setup, it might explain some oddities heard in the audio, if your high frequency hearing is good and if you use headphones capable of 20 KHz reproduction. Although my headphones are good up to that range, too many years of listening to loud CW mean that my hearing has a cutoff sufficiently low so that none of these oddities make it into my wetware audio processor. I've also made an automated GIF image of spectrum analysis images for LIN OUT settings from 2 to 100, as well as a few other points that may be of interest. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Another wet and chilly week on the West Coast. I know the folks in California like it very hot and dry but I gave that up when I left Albuquerque. I had had enough of seeing my corneas wrinkle in the single digit humidity. It was nice to see the sun but 360+ days a year of it gets to be a bit much. I like variations in temperature and visibility. Growing up in the Midwest it was not unusual to have a temperature change of 100 degrees in a week (40 below zero to 70 degrees) in early March. I once had the pleasure of having my vehicle towed out of my own driveway. The frost had gone out of the gravel overnight and my truck had sunk to the frame! Luckily the extremes are not as great in Oregon. I have grown a little older over the last twenty years and the below zero weather would probably not be so kind to me. Fall will be starting very soon up here. The foxgloves are done blooming so it is time to get very serious about collecting all the wood I've cut and split over the last four months. I am very relaxed right now after doing just that for the last few hours. Between the rain showers it is nice to get out to enjoy the cool weather. Getting my chores done is a good way to have some fun. The new cat enjoys watching me split and stack wood for some silly reason. He just lies there and watches the progress. No comments just little green eyes going back and forth (when they are open that is). Twenty meters was fair this week for my contacts into the Southeast. QSB and QRN were present each time but it was possible to converse for an hour. Forty meters was good the one evening I tried and from reports I've read others had the same conditions. I just read on SpaceWeather.com that there is a large coronal hole on the back side of the sun. This will be on the Earth facing side in another week. Watch out for aurora and for improved conditions once the ionosphere has become recharged. From the satellite photo this should produce a large charged stream of particles. If we get a solid hit it will be quite noisy for a period of time. Keep your ears tuned for propagation changes soon. RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 questions
For me the context area isn't attenuated at all. I believe its 200Hz wide in the middle... The only difference I thought was that it can now go down to as narrow as 400 on the outer skirts rather than the 600 that it used to be limited to. Doesn't seem to make too much difference to me but I do admit that I like not being limited as I did run it at 600 at times and wished I wasn't being stopped. I find that for me it may be a dumb idea to do something but I usually don't like not being allowed to. Thats one of the reasons why my 250Hz filter is fully allowed to be used in SSB on my K3. Not that I'd want to do that but why limit myself. ~Brett (KC7OTG) On Sat, 2008-08-30 at 18:50 -0400, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: The magicians at Elecraft are now at work on an improved DUAL PB which will allow more flexibility in the context WIDTH setting, which would accomplish somewhat similar results (but the context BW is attenuated by -24 dB versus the focus BW). 73, Bill ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. If I powered the rig down they would work for a bit then go back to the same mode. This all worked prior to the 2.3x series of Beta. Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware latest public release...is it 2.02
In addition, consider that each of you can contribute a lot to the firmware test. Yes, the Beta releases have been tested by the Firmware Test Team, but the K3 configurations used are limited among those Field Testers. Many have the KRX3 installed and other options with a full compliment of filters, and there are others like me who have a basic K2/100 with only the stock 2.7 kHz roofing filter. Your K3 may be configured differently from all those used for the initial testing and can show bugs that are not seen by any of the Field Test team. Any problems that you encounter (and report) will be heard and will result in a better K3 with the next firmware release. All bugs need to be 'squashed', but they need to be identified before that can happen. If you do not like what you experience with the Beta release, as Greg said, you can always go back to the last public release or any version that you were happy with.. 73, Don W3FPR Greg - N4CC wrote: One more point...why WOULDN'T you load a Beta release? Re: [Elecraft] K3 filters
Scott McDowell wrote: I have a k3/100 ordered and am trying to decide on filters. I would like the 250 hz 8 pole filter for cw. Should I also get the 400 hz filter for ssb. It's important to remember that the selectivity is dependent on the DSP setting and the filter is just a backup for very strong nearby signals. For CW the 400 or 500 Hz. filter will be fine; you can adjust the bandwidth down to 50 Hz. with the DSP controls. The 250 Hz. filter is probably narrower than you will need for CW 99% of the time. It is useful for RTTY or PSK, however. For SSB the stock 2.7 kHz. filter will do a good job. Some contesters like the 1.8 kHz. filter so they can operate closer to very strong signals. 400 Hz. would be way too narrow for SSB. So if you are a CW/SSB operator I would recommend the 2.7 kHz. filter (for ssb) plus the 500 or 400 Hz. filter (for CW). If you are especially interested in digital modes, then maybe the 250 could be useful -- but it isn't necessary. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Don, there isn't a diode across the relay coil in an SB220 - so there may be a nasty back emf voltage on key release. Also, the K3 maximum keying delay is 20 mS, will the relay in a SB220 switch in that time?
