[Elecraft] [K3] f/w 2.73/1.98 power calibration

2008-12-13 Thread Steve Ward

I just applied the latest beta firmware as I have done many times
before, and it looks like this time my power calibration went out the
window. I'm putting out about 70w on PSK31 when I dialed in 45.

Just wanted to give folks a heads-up to watch their power output when
they start operating under new firmware, it might be time to re-calibrate!

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Poor AM receive audio quality

2008-12-13 Thread VK5ABQ

Thanks for your replies guys. Hopefully Icom's SP20 makes a difference.

I've received too many emails privately to reply to each separately sorry so
I hope those who were kind enough to spend their time writing to me won't
mind if I answer all questions here?

I do have a KBPF3 general coverage bandpass filters installed and my
comments about the relatively poor audio quality referred to the sound
coming from the K3's internal speaker. While the R2000 sounds terrific using
a 6KHz max bandwidth to listen to AM broadcast, the K3 just does not sound
very nice at all despite being opened up to 10KHz bandwidth. I couldn't
believe how poor it sounded when I turned the rig on the first time (it was
factory assembled). I had that sinking feeling you get when you first
suspect you've not spent your money on what you should have.

At this stage I do expect the K3 will sound fine with the SP20, after all
50Hz and 100Hz were included in the RX EQ for a reason? It's a pity their
level doesn't make any difference when listening to the K3's internal
speaker.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Passband tuning questions

2008-12-13 Thread VK5ABQ

Sorry I made a mistake above. Where I typed 4.20KHz should be 4.00KHz.

Why the lack of replies? Isn't the passband tuning faulty?

Set the K3 to AM
Set Bandwidth to 10KHz
Set Fc to 1.50KHz
Switch to HI/LO cut and discover HI=4.00KHz and LO=0.00KHz. Shouldn't
HI=5.00KHz if bandwidth is set to 10KHz?

Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} fatiguing auido, high noise environment

2008-12-13 Thread GM0ELP

I have found that having roofing filters automatically track the DSP filter
width is a bad idea in a noisy environment. My noise was best tackled with
the DSP NB rather than the hardware NB (ie. DSP NB 3-7, IF OFF).

The DSP NB still worked with a 1KHz roofing filter in line, but if a
narrower roofing filter was selected (400Hz) as a result of reducing the DSP
filter width, the DSP NB action vanished, and I was left with the same
horrible audio as you are describing.

I don't understand the full picture yet, but, DSP NB and NR need a wide
roofing filter width (>= 1KHz) to work effectively. However, any narrow DSP
filter width (as long as a wide roofing filter was selected) would still
still allow DSP NB and NR to work effectively (ie. roofing filter 1KHz, dsp
filter 200Hz). The automatic selection of roofing filters makes this
combination and many others impossible to select (e.g. if you have a 400Hz
roofing filter installed) without messing about with the Elecraft Utility
software and disabling filters.

My previous post suggested having a menu item that would allow the
automatic/manual selection of roofing filters (defaulted to Automatic) to
allow for better handling of selectivity in noisy situations.

[Elecraft] k3 MCU flashing TX lockup

2008-12-13 Thread Gary Gregory
I am hoping somebody can help solve this.

I attempted to load the latest Beta software when suddenly the download
failed.

Unable to communite with the K3 from the loader (latest version) and the
power off to force a reset and download results in "Unable to communicate
with K3" error msg appears.

The flashing yellow light appeared first, now extinguished, just the
flashing red Tx light, unlit screen and MCU LD in the display.

Anyone have any suggestions to try next?

Another use for that type of copper strip is to make traces on 'prototype'
single sided pcbs by cutting it into narrower stips. This removes the need
to etch a pcb until the design is complete. I am still using some
'prototype' pcbs built 20+ years ago, and there is no sign yet of any strip
lifting off the fibreglass board.

To prevent scratching anything when building a pcb assembly I add 4 legs to
the pcb (5 for large pcbs) made from metal spacers, each threaded at one end
and tapped at the other end, attached through holes where the pcb's
groundplane is visible. The pcb then looks like an oil rig with a sort of
four square on top. This removes any need to touch the pcb while building or
turning it upside down, and prevents scratches. Whenever possible I populate
a pcb with all of its resistors before installing any static sensitive
devices. For insurance I ground one of the legs via a resistor.

Hello Shane,

Assuming there's nothing wrong with your internal
speaker or it's mounting I still wouldn't expect it
to sound very good. I view that little speaker as little
more than a device to tell if the radio's working or not,
and not suitable for listening.

If you haven't done so, try an external speaker, or
better still, two. The AFX feature is really nice. After
all the K3 -is- a "communications" transceiver. (:-)

Gary,

If possible, use a real serial port instead of a USB/serial adapter.
If you are using a USB/serial adapter, plug it into a native USB port,
not into a hub.

Close K3 Utility and reboot the computer.
Remove the power cable from the K3 for at least 5 seconds
Hold the K3 power switch down for at least 10 seconds
Open K3 Utility and "Send All New Firmware".

If that does not cure things, check your computer serial connections -
try a new cable, etc.

3 Reboot windows xp pro

Should I start the utility 1st?...(I am using latest version) or the radio?

I am seeing the radio come on when I press the button and the led's are

just flashing red tx light and MCU LD on the display.

K3 utility sets the data rate of the K3 automatically, so that is not
the problem. Look first at your computer (reboot), and your serial

Hi Shane,

There are indeed several oddities with the DSP filtering (passband
tuning), particularly related to switching from CENTER/WIDTH mode to
LO/HI CUT mode. I posted my findings on Nov. 26, 08 in the message
with the subject line "LO CUT/HI CUT Bugs?" Lyle acknowledged the
message and said it was on the list to be corrected.

[Elecraft] K3: Lost in Sub-RX Operation

2008-12-13 Thread WA6L

I've had the KRX3 installed for weeks, and it seemed to be working fine.
However, during the ARRL 10M contest, I decided to try diversity reception.

I have two antennas attaced to the ATU Ant1 and Ant2 ports. The KRX3 is set
for ATU.

When the SUB is on, and linked, the sub-receiver works fine when switched to
MAIN. I hear a signal in both ears. When switched to AUX, the sub-receiver
is totally deaf -- nothing -- no signal whatsoever. BSET shows that the
sub-receiver is using the other antenna (Ant1 or Ant2, depending on what the
main receiver is using), but no signal.

So, I am lost. Either I have something set wrong, or there is a problem
with the KRX3. I would appreciate any help or suggestions before I go the
service route.

Thanks and 73,

John, WA6L

On SSB and all bands, at startup audio is low (can still hear signal) and

Can somone give me some guidance

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} fatiguing auido, high noise environment

2008-12-13 Thread Erik N Basilier

Doug,

I find the DSP NR to be quite effective even with a 200 Hz roof and
100 Hz DSP. No specific experience with impulse noise and NR only (if I have
impulse noise, I turn on the NB).

Running 2.67 with default AGC settings.

That said, I agree that it is useful to be able to change roofing filter
without having the DSP width follow.
The K3 utility is a clumsy way to do it. I would rather have the XFIL button
not affect DSP width.

I have found that having roofing filters automatically track the DSP
filter

width is a bad idea in a noisy environment. My noise was best tackled with
the DSP NB rather than the hardware NB (ie. DSP NB 3-7, IF OFF).

The DSP NB still worked with a 1KHz roofing filter in line, but if a
narrower roofing filter was selected (400Hz) as a result of reducing the
DSP

filter width, the DSP NB action vanished, and I was left with the same
horrible audio as you are describing.

I don't understand the full picture yet, but, DSP NB and NR need a wide
roofing filter width (>= 1KHz) to work effectively. However, any narrow
DSP

filter width (as long as a wide roofing filter was selected) would still
still allow DSP NB and NR to work effectively (ie. roofing filter 1KHz,
dsp

filter 200Hz).

Re: [Elecraft] easy source of static dissipating work mat?

2008-12-13 Thread Don Ehrlich
That sounds about right to me. Remember, the general meaning of pink and
black (at least back when I was actually an engineer) was that black plastic
bags, foam, etc indicated "static dissipating" ... the material was actually
slightly conductive. Anything pink in color was defined as "non-static" ...
meaning that the material would not contribute electrons or ions to the
environment that would cause static voltage buildup. Pink material was
usually non-conductive but was allowed in static sensitive environments.

RE: [Elecraft] easy source of static dissipating work mat?

2008-12-13 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
It's great "Ham" tradition to look for the cheapest and most effective way
to get the job done, but there comes a time when doing it "by the numbers"
is a great investment to reduce the chances of a costly mistake.

It's like avoiding the one word us non-physicians ever want to hear if we're
in surgery. (That word, of course, is the surgeon saying "Oops!").

If anything, I believe modern active devices are more sensitive than the
older stuff. Of course, it's hard to "fry" a bipolar transistor compared to
insulated-gate (e.g. MOSFETs), and the older stuff used a LOT of bipolar
devices where MOS devices are used today.

But even MOS stuff has grown more sensitive as the designs have evolved to
provide for faster switching (higher data speeds) and lower power
consumption. Those demands mean thinner and more delicate insulation in the
gates and it's that insulation that's quickly and easily compromised by even
small static charges.

For a while early MOSFETs often included back-to-back diodes on the
substrate to "protect" the gates from low level ESD since the diodes would
turn on if their forward conduction voltage was exceeded. However, such
diodes add unwanted capacitance to the circuit which limits the switching
speed and are not commonly used today AFAIK.

Bottom line, the newer stuff is easier to fry if one gets careless about
ESD.

Avoid the "Oops!" ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Lost in Sub-RX Operation

2008-12-13 Thread WA6L

I found the problem. After taking the cover off of the KRX3, I discovered
that J92 was broken. There was no contact and of course no AUX signal. It
appears that there was too much pressure between the KIO3 board and the
cable attached to J92.

I have contacted Elecraft support for next steps.

Thanks to those who replied off-line.

I am sure there are more replies since your post, but I tried some different

can get with the options available. I need more practice!

I have found that having roofing filters automatically track the DSP filter
width is a bad idea in a noisy environment. My noise was best tackled with
the DSP NB rather than the hardware NB (ie. DSP NB 3-7, IF OFF).

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Passband tuning questions

2008-12-13 Thread VK5ABQ

Ah OK then. I had noticed some other strange behaviour by the passband
graphics too.
Thanks Joe. It IS nice to know Elecraft are keen to continue improving the
K3.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} fatiguing auido, high noise environment

2008-12-13 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
Or possibly there could be an NR option to have it switch to a wider
xtal filter when NR is on, if this turns out to be valuable.

Then the wider xtal filter wouldn't be used unless needed.
Leigh/WA5ZNU
It seems to be nice future option to have roofing filters switched
only by XFIL button and DSP control by WIDTH only - both independent
for such experimental usage...

Erik N Basilier napsal(a):

Doug,

I find the DSP NR to be quite effective even with a 200 Hz roof and
100 Hz DSP. No specific experience with impulse noise and NR only (if
I have impulse noise, I turn on the NB).

Running 2.67 with default AGC settings.

That said, I agree that it is useful to be able to change roofing
filter without having the DSP width follow.
The K3 utility is a clumsy way to do it. I would rather have the XFIL
button not affect DSP width.

I have found that having roofing filters automatically track the DSP
filter
width is a bad idea in a noisy environment. My noise was best
tackled with

the DSP NB rather than the hardware NB (ie. DSP NB 3-7, IF OFF).

The DSP NB still worked with a 1KHz roofing filter in line, but if a
narrower roofing filter was selected (400Hz) as a result of reducing
the DSP

filter width, the DSP NB action vanished, and I was left with the same
horrible audio as you are describing.

I don't understand the full picture yet, but, DSP NB and NR need a wide
roofing filter width (>= 1KHz) to work effectively. However, any
narrow DSP
filter width (as long as a wide roofing filter was selected) would
still
still allow DSP NB and NR to work effectively (ie. roofing filter
1KHz, dsp

filter 200Hz). The automatic selection of roofing filters makes this
combination and many others impossible to select (e.g. if you have a
400Hz
roofing filter installed) without messing about with the Elecraft
Utility

software and disabling filters.

My previous post suggested having a menu item that would allow the
automatic/manual selection of roofing filters (defaulted to
Automatic) to

allow for better handling of selectivity in noisy situations.

Quadra plus K3 works FB. Do the ALC mod, install the pull-up
resistors for the automatic BCD bandswitching, wire up the cable to
interconnect everything, and enjoy.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2008-12-13 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
I cannot see the sun today, there is too much snow falling right now. It
started falling slowly yesterday before noon but did not start to accumulate
until after dinner. There are currently three inches on the ground and the
pace has sped up considerably. By tomorrow at this time there should be a foot
on the ground with more on the way. Luckily the 60 mile per hour winds have
not arrived and may not occur. For that I am very thankful. I did lose a few
of the weakened trees to the wind last night but they are nowhere near the
house. I have heard the Doug fir over my head shed some of its load and expect
that will happen more frequently as the days progress.
Conditions on twenty meters this week were not the best and forty was weak
too except for a contact I had last night shortly after dinner. When I
examined our respective locations I found a line of sight path between us. So
a great groundwave QSO into Washington. He mentioned how lonely 40 meters can
get so it looks like we may meet again as I spin the dial. The only way
propagation could be effected between us is if my antennas fall down :) Even
then it would only be a matter of a few S units loss.

Please join us tomorrow evening.
