[Elecraft] dynamic range bandwidth
After reading Bills (W4ZV) response to my comment(s) on the dynamic range presentation I think I understand the issue taken with what I said. Bandwidth is a terrible thing to waste but hopefully the misunderstanding can be fixed. I made a tongue-in-cheek comment that I could fool the guys in my ham club by measuring MDS of the K3 with a 50 Hz bandwidth and show it has an even better dynamic range. I concluded that paragraph with of course that would be a little deceitful I should have added on my part so there would be no misunderstanding. I didn't mean that Eric had cooked the number, I just got too cute describing the influence of bandwidth on the MDS and dynamic range numbers. As I composed a private response to Bill Tippett I suddenly saw how what I wrote could be interpreted as implying Elecraft had done something underhanded. That was not what I was saying at all but I can see how it could be interpreted that way. And in seeing that possible interpretation realized I better make one more post to the list, then I'll shut up. So let me be perfectly clear: I was saying that including measurement bandwidth on that page of the presentation reinforces, stresses, the validity of comparing of the numbers. I was NOT saying that Elecraft cooks numbers or cheats to make nice looking specifications. I've personally verified some obscure numbers like noise figure on 6 meters with the preamp and found that there was no fudging. I didn't own a K3 then, but I do now. My apologies for writing in an unclear fashion. As a brief aside, I am using a pair of Yamaha headphones (not headset) with my K3 (2051). The model is HP-170. As an audiophool of sorts, I appreciate the clear sound. These are VERY comfortable. On the ear style, so I can still hear the louder goings on in the house, but am not bothered by most of the racket from two teenage boys. They replaced excellent, but less comfortable Sennheisers. [Elecraft] Yamahs CM500 Headset
All: Im a punch guy and not a hi-fi guy. I do hi fi at work. I own a couple of Heils (a BM-10 and a ProSet) with the DX Element which are good for contesting but often sound a little too in your face for non contest work. I considered the Yamaha, but I find that it is sometimes difficult to interchange phantom powered electrets when traveling to other stations for contests. I have found a very good alternative to both in the Koss SB-40. It is stereo, has a 1/8 stereo plug and has all the features of the CM500, but uses a dynamic mic. The cord is incredibly long, but a RipTie fixes that. It is also a full ear cup model with huge transducers, and fits my head more comfortably that the ProSets do especially because I wear glasses. The ProSet's earcups are much harder than the SB-40's and leave a gap. The Koss seals around the glasses perfectly, keeping sound out, without pushing the glasses into my temples. Worst thing is that it doesnt have a single outlet for the cords on one earcup, but I consider this minor. Admittedly, the SB-40 headphone is really bassy. Guess Gamers like those big explosions to rock their heads around (listen to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon with these, you will see!). This bass effect is easily fixed with some RX EQ, but then K3 doesnt have much bass response, except when using V3.25 firmware. Wonder when that promised bass will make its return! Soon I hope! :) The mic is very flat in response but shifts towards the bassy side with a marked proximity effect, but TX equalization takes care of that. After processing, I can acheive a similar sound to the DX Element but with less harshness and a very nice bass undertone around 150-200Hz when close-talked which, in my opinion, may add to intelegibility on the low bands. The K3's EQ capabilities can make this mic sound any way you want to sound, from DX punch to ESSB. I still like the penetration of a well EQ'd DX Element in a contest, but these are smooth and broad and seem to complement my particular K3. They are EXTREMELY comfortable, more so than the ProSet, and very ruggedly constructed, too! They cost around $30 at Full Compass. I will probably use them for CQ-WW-SSB. -lu-W4LT- Message: 1 Date: Tue, 15 Sep 2009 09:11:17 -0700 From: Jim Brown j...@audiosystemsgroup.com Subject: [Elecraft] Yamahs CM500 Headset To: Elecraft List elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 20090915161121.80bcd57...@gw1.nlenet.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii On Sun, 6 Sep 2009 18:42:31 -0700, Dick Dievendorff wrote: I just tried out my new Yamaha CM500 as well. Several of the guys in our contest club have bought these headsets and fired them up with their K3s. One of them, W6XU, brought one to our meeting last night, and I tried it on. It is quite comfortable, and well built. The headphones are of the big closed type that provide some isolation from noise in the shack. They are NOT active, noise-cancelling type. The mic is a cardioid electret. Another of the guys, K6TD, had me listen to his on the air. It sounded very good with no tweaking of the K3, and with tweaking, produced very competitive audio. The tweaking consisted of using maximum cut on the three lowest filters, 6dB boost at 2.4 kHz, and 10 dB boost at 3.2 kHz. I also had him kick in about 10dB of processing. This eq is consistent with most mics designed for SSB communications use (like the Shure and Heil products). The difference is that this headset sells for only $45 online at Sam Ash with free shipping, a bit more at other vendors. George, my big congrats for Your new K2! Excellent job from You and I hope that You will enjoy Your new rig a lot. I am using K2 quite often and still it can't be beat by most of other rice boxes on the market. If You do not have it yet then look for KAF2 and 160m modules as they are very useful. I hope to hear You on 160metres soon. 73 - Petr, OK1RP K2/#4800 -Original Message- Hello everyone. I don't know if anyone keeps track of this information, but my K2 SN #6799 is now assembled and on the air. I'll probably begin installing the 100 watt amp later this week. Re: [Elecraft] kenwood mic
John, The pinout and the microphone configuration header information is in the KSB2 manual (download it from the Elecraft website if you do not have a copy). The Kenwood pinout is almost the same as the Elecraft pinout *except* for pins 5 and 6 which are interchanged between the two. A Kenwood dynamic microphone normally does not use pins 5 and 6, but if you have an amplified Kenwood microphone, then it is highly likely that the mic expects to have voltage (+5 to +8 volts) on pin 5. I looked at the Heil website and could not find an MH-1 microphone. Was that a typo and you really meant the Elecraft MH2 microphone that was manufactured by Heil - turn it over and read the back label - those microphones had the Heil label on the front and has confused many people. For a good resource on microphone pinouts, look at the list compiled by G4WVW at http://www.timroberts-vk4yeh.id.au/G4WPW_mic_connections/index.htm. 73, Don W3FPR john wrote: hi everyone, does some have a pinout available for a kenwood mic for the k2? Thanks Petr, and everyone else who responded. Actually, I do have the 160 meter module in as well as the 60 meter, ssb, dsp and noise blanker. I did things a bit backwards. I decided at the beginning of the summer to get the K2 in September, so I started buying the options during the summer and built them up as they came in. When I completed the K2 I just started plugging them in one at a time so I wouldn't have to wait too long for everything to work. I've been busy with my real work, but I do hope to get a 160 meter loop up this fall (it's already been delayed for too long). 73 George __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Power point
I agree that most of the time the ARRL radio product reviews are performed with 400-500 Hz bandwidth IF filters installed. However there is at least one notable exception. Have a look at the March 1991 ARRL review of the now famous Yaesu FT1000D. The ARRL tests were conducted with 250 Hz bandwidth IF filters. This surely helped make the Yaesu FT1000D review results even better. By just reviewing the ARRL test results, is there a simple way of comparing the FT1000 measured with 250 Hz bandwidth IF filters with other radios tested by the ARRL that were tested with 500 Hz bandwidth IF filters? 73, Dave Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft wrote: All the ARRL numbers are at 400-500 Hz b/w. 73, Eric William Carver wrote: It would be nice to explicitly give the bandwidth associated with the dynamic range numbers.
