Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio Volume

2009-10-21 Thread DC1RS

Just a thought, but maybe it is a bad relais in the ATU?
I had once problems with higher SWR at 10m although the antenna was ok.
Cycling the ATU on/off cured this problem.

[Elecraft] K3 Audio Volume

2009-10-21 Thread rfenabled
Hi

Again today I had soft audio when I turned the K3 on.

I pressed the ATU button and the volume became loud and has remained at that
level.

Here are the settings.

7.102.00 LSB
Width. 2.50
FC 0.50
Hi. 1.75
LO. 0.00
Filter 2.1 8 pole
(Others installed are also 8 pole 13,6,2.8 and 400)
Antenna is 80M full wave loop and has a 1.2:1 dip on this frequency)
AF knob was at quarter PAST the hour as the audio is generally very low and has
been for a long time.

After the change in volume it sounds great at the 11 o'clock position.

FW ver 3.41

Hope this helps someone figure out what may be causing this up/down audio
change.

[Elecraft] K3 and the IC-2KL/AT-500

2009-10-21 Thread Paul Ormandy ZL4PW
Hi all,

Hopefully, I will soon purchase an IC-2KL/AT-500 combo for use with the K3.

I understand that to automatically band-switch I need an interface that
emulates the CI-V.

It would appear that most modern band-decoders don't provide the
analogue voltages required and there is W9XT's "BCD-10" but it requires
a parallel port to drive it... I use a laptop so that is an issue!

If anyone is aware of an interface device (apparently someone has
homebrewed one) I would appreciate knowing the details. Maybe the
Elecraft KRC2 is the answer???

I ma not that concerned about the negative ALC mod at this stage.

Cheers,

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Resolution

2009-10-21 Thread Brett Howard
The LP100A claims typical 3% absolute w/ NIST calibration (and Larry
does that for you for free when you're done building the kit). I
really dig that you get to build the kit including the coupler. I
also like that you can use it as a field strength meter. Not to
mention that in field strength meter mode it goes to MUCH higher than
just HF frequencies. I've used it to take antenna patterns for YAGI's
at VHF frequencies. It also can give you a lot of the similar
information that people buy the MFJ analyzers for too. I also like
being able to get the information in several formats. You can get FWD
power and REV power, or you can get FWD power and SWR, or FWD power
and return loss in dB (my personal favorite).

Anyway I'm pretty pleased with mine and find it to be VERY accurate
and I compared it to an actual Agilent lab watt meter from work.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 Antenna Tuner Tutorial

2009-10-21 Thread KM5Q
Here's another question: I have a dipole with 200 feet of window-line
feed. It works great with the ATU. When it's wet, I have to re-tune,
then it's fine again.

I've tuned it at lots of spots in some favorite bands during dry
weather (most of the time in New Mexico). But on a rainy day, I end up
retuning frequencies here and there. Next sunny day, does the system
detune me when I run into a previously "wet-tuned" segment?

Oddly, I haven't observed this, but I don't understand why.

The LP-100A (I have one) is spec'd at "5% or better", without saying what
"or better" means, and < 2% relative, which isn't a spec Elecraft provides
for the W2, but which one could reasonably assume is in the same range.

I don't see any practical difference. True, the LP-100 is a also a good
meter, and will give you a couple of digits of precision to the right of the
decimal in the display in low power ranges, but given the absolute accuracy,
they aren't exactly meaningful.

Truth is, I wish I had never sold my Nye-Viking 3KW, old fashioned, analog
metered, no PC interface, 'eyeball the power' power meter, thinking the new
fangled thingy would somehow be better. The Nye did everything one needs
unless you're running a lab instead of a ham radio station. But no, I drank
the Coolaid :-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 Antenna Tuner Tutorial

A really great feature of K3EZ is that it auto tunes the rig at all of
the preset bins across all bands that you wish. This is something that
would be slick if it were built into the calibration section of the
elecraft K3 app but otherwise the K3EZ app does a good job of this.

[Elecraft] K4QO and 3 others silent key

2009-10-21 Thread Don Wilhelm
I have just received this news through another reflector. Randy K4QO
was one of the early K2 users - in fact a K2 Field Tester if I recall
correctly. Although he has not been active on the Elecraft reflector
recently, I am certain he will be remembered and missed by many. My
condolences to his family.

4 Die in Small Plane Crash Near Charleston SC

By BRUCE SMITH
The Associated Press
Wednesday, October 21, 2009; 5:16 PM

JEDBURG, S.C. -- Authorities say four men killed when a small plane
crashed and burst into flames near the South Carolina coast were friends
heading to an amateur radio convention in the Bahamas.

Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nesbit identified three of the victims
of Wednesday's crash as the pilot and plane's owner, Peter Radding of
North Charleston, and passengers Edwin Steeble and James Randolph
Hargenrader, both of Summerville.

Nesbit says the fourth victim was from Delaware, but didn't release
other information because his family had not been contacted.

Authorities say the twin-engine Piper PA-23 crashed shortly after
departure around 6:45 a.m. near the Summerville airport in a rural area
near Jedburg, 30 miles northwest of Charleston. The men were planning a
stop in Florida

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 Antenna Tuner Tutorial

2009-10-21 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Don,

The manual is a bit sparse in this area -- I'll improve it next time.

> The user manual says that there are up to 30 ATU settings stored for
> each antenna on each band by the antenna tuner.

Yes. 10 kHz per segment on 160 m, 20 kHz per segment on 80-12 m, 100
kHz on 10 m, and 200 kHz on 6 m.

> There is no further discussion as to when a setting is saved or how
> a setting is chosen from those saved.

When you hit ATU TUNE, the ATU checks the SWR and goes through the
matching process if necessary. If so, new LC settings is saved for the
present band segment.

> Is the frequency tracked as the VFO changes and a new setting put
> into the antenna tuner when the VFO has been changed enough? Does a
> setting get changed if the VFO has changed
> enough and the K3 instructed to transmit?

LC network changes do not occur in receive mode, as we found that very
distracting. Instead they occur on band change or antenna change, or
(if necessary) when you transmit.

If you have moved the VFO from one segment to another since the last
transmission, and the best available LC settings have also changed,
the ATU will automatically load the new settings when you transmit.
The "ATU" icon flashes briefly to let you know this has occurred.

"Best available" is determined by comparing the present VFO location
to segments for which LC data has been stored. Let's say you've tuned
up the ATU only at 7000 and 7250 kHz on 40 m. If you move the VFO to
7180 and transmit, the ATU will load the settings from the 7250 kHz
bin, since that's the closest one.

>
> My antenna tuner seems to me to retune too often. Again my
> expectations may
> not match how the tuner works.

This depends on the Q of the antenna. If Q is high (i.e. the antenna
is narrow-banded), the ATU will retune more often. You could if you
wish go through each band and tune up at the intervals mentioned
above. On 160 m you'd start somewhere between 1800 and 1810 kHz, etc.
But this is definitely not necessary.

Up to 30 LC settings are stored for both antennas on all bands.

All settings are saved in EEPROM so you don't have to retune if you
power the radio off.

[Elecraft] K3 KAT3 Antenna Tuner Tutorial

2009-10-21 Thread Don Nelson

The K3 KAT3 antenna tuner is a puzzle to me. The user manual says that there
are up to 30 ATU settings stored for each antenna on each band by the
antenna tuner. There is no further discussion as to when a setting is saved
or how a setting is chosen from those saved. Is the frequency tracked as the
VFO changes and a new setting put into the antenna tuner when the VFO has
been changed enough? Does a setting get changed if the VFO has changed
enough and the K3 instructed to transmit?

My antenna tuner seems to me to retune too often. Again my expectations may
not match how the tuner works. I would appreciate a tuner tutorial for the
KAT3.

Some topics for said tutorial would include: (1) frequency spacing for
tuning settings on each band, (2) does the tuner remember settings for an
antenna from one time when the radio was on to the next time the radio was
on, (3) does the tuner remember previous tuned setting from a previous visit
to a band, (4) how far the SWR must be off for the tuner to retune, (5) how
does the tuner indicate a failure to tune, (6) does it make sense to tune
ahead so to speak where you may want to have the antenna tuned up ahead of
an event?

With the next beta release, K3 users will be able to customize SPLIT
operation, as well as many other functions. For example, you'll be
able to define a single switch tap or hold that does:

A>B/A>B
SPLIT
VFO B up 2 kHz (or any other amount)

It could even turn on the sub RX, enter diversity mode, set main and
sub bandwidths, clear RIT, etc.

Details soon.

Ok, so what about this:

A single-tap clears RIT if RIT is ON, does nothing if RIT is OFF;
double-tapping clears RIT (if ON)
*and* sets the RX-Vfo back to the configured offset.

If you have been using Beta 3.44/2.38 firmware and have reported a
problem with it, please email me directly and I will send you an FT
version of code that *may* fix the problem. In return, please test it
and see if it fixes (or changes) the symptoms and let me know.

Please do not report problems with this test code to the reflector or
K3support - this is early code!

If you have not reported a problem, please don't request the code. I
need to keep the email volume to a minimum, and focus on reported problems.

Thank you!

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Resolution

2009-10-21 Thread Grant Youngman
You won't get higher accuracy by using the PC interface -- only higher
precision. It's also kind of important to note that the spec is +/-
0.5dB. Doesn't say if that's of indicated power or of scale maximum.
Nonetheless, you can get all the digits of precision through a PC
readout you want, you still are only going to be +/- 100 watts
accurate or so in the middle of the 2K range. This is consistent with
the accuracy of other similar good quality RF Power meters.

It wouldn't seem to matter all that terribly much that the LEDs only
give you 20 intervals, or that you could possibly get readings to the
watt on the 2KW (or even the 200W) range. Once you throw in
measurement error, you still only know your output power within some
range of a few percent.

IMHO from RTFM = From the Manual on the W2 Copies below, you will see that
the W2 will range the sensors. The 2KW sensor for instance can show only
0-20 watts so with 20 lights, the lowest light lit would be 1 watt. and for
the 200 w sensor it will be 1/10 watt.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware upgrade via Microham MKII

2009-10-21 Thread Lu Romero
John:

I wouldnt try it. Both Elecraft and MicroHam disclaim it.

Here is what I do:

My Ham Radio computer has a dedicated Serial port. I have
two MicroKeyers (an original and a 2) which I use to drive
my K3 and my secondary TS570. Both of these are driven by
single USB cables.

Since the K3 requires exclusive access to the serial port
for config and upgrades, I have purchased a very inexpensive
($8 new), RS232 one by two data switch. I plug the
MicroKeyer 2's serial CAT connector into one section and the
serial line from my computer's single serial port to the
second connector. I then place a gender changer on the
common DB9, then place a RS232 cable from that DB9 to the K3
CAT connector.

When I need radio control from my logging programs, I
"patch" the MicroHam control through to the K3, when I need
to upgrade software, I place the switch in the other
position and "patch" the serial port directly from the
computer into the radio.

No issues and no problems in two months of K3 operation
(with many software upgrades accomplished).

Can the Microham MKII be used to do the K3 Firmware upgrade.
 I know it was
possible but after the loader was originally upgraded there
was a possible
glitch that would cause the firmware load to fail. My
firmware is at 2.38
and I think it is time to come out of the Dark Ages once
again.

[Elecraft] W2 Resolution

2009-10-21 Thread Don Ehrlich
The photos of the W2 appear to show 20 LEDs in a row which will provide a
power display resolution of only 100 watts in the 2 KW scale, 10 watts with
the 200 watt scale. That means if I see the 300 watt LED lit up I will know
only that my power output is somewhere between 250 and 350 watts. Is that
right?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware upgrade via Microham MKII

2009-10-21 Thread Henk Remijn PA5KT
I always use my MKII to do the upgrade.

Followed the procedure as Joe describes. No problems.
If you are in doubt first try to save the configuration to test the
communication.

I know this procedure is not recommended.

Make sure there is a ground wire on the rotator controller.

[Elecraft] k3 50Hz background noise

2009-10-21 Thread Igor Sokolov
My friend, K3 user is getting ready for CQWW SSB. In his installation the
rotator control box that has pretty large transformer inside. The box is
only few inches away from one of the two K3s and cannot be moved. He has
discovered that magnetic field created by this transformer interacts with
the AF transformer (Line in) in K3. The indused 50Hz noise is only 20db down
from the audio signal. The noise is gone when line in is switched off in the
menu but that leaves him without voice keyer which is tough to be deprived
of in 48 hours SSB contest. Has anybody found a solution yet. He now thinks
of taking the transformers out of the radio an bypassing them. He thinks
that the problem roots to the fact that the K3 cabinet is made of aluminum.

[Elecraft] K3 Downloading Beta Versions in Vista

2009-10-21 Thread Lee Trout
All computer wizards may ignore this post. It is written for the "computer
challenged," such as my self, who are using *Vista.*

The "K3 Beta Test Firmware Instructions" were a bit confusing to me and not
detailed enough. This is how I was able to download a beta version.

Item 3 of Instructions: After right clicking on the .zip file, click on
"save link as." In the pop up window, ignore the "save as type" (mine says
"all files"). Enter the path to the beta folder you created, e.g., "K3
Beta."

Go to whatever Windows Explorer, e.g., "Computer." In your "K3 Beta"
folder, you will see a new folder labeled "k3fw3rxx". Double click on this
folder.

After double clicking, you will see the files and at the top you will see
"Extract all files." Click on Extract. The path to these extracted files
is what you enter in your K3 utility.

There may be a more elegant way to do it but this worked for me and hope
this helps any others that are a bit shaky on computer skills -- again, like
me!

2009-10-21 Thread Don Wilhelm
Chuck,

Since you have a 'scope, I would suggest you remove the PA transistors
from the picture and see if the oscillation persists. You can easily
de-solder T3 which will remove voltage from the PA collectors.
If you still have the oscillation at the base of Q7/8 (or at the
collector) of Q6, then you can more easily troubleshoot it without fear
of damaging the PA transistors.
Q6 can similarly be taken out of the operating condition by removing a
choke or resistor. I don't have the schematics with me while on
vacation, so you will have to find out which one on your own.

Hi,

I have noticed that at times the audio volume on ssb will be
reduced. I have to run the volume set at Hi and the knob set around
full clockwise.

At other times it will be fine at around the 1 o'clock position with
either headphones or speaker.

FW 3.41

This has been evident for sometime and on earlier FW versions also.

Will FW 3.44 fix this or is it something else?

Not using NR or NB when this reduced volume is evident.

Affects all bands

I cannot seem to find a way to force it to do this, it appears
random to me.

Thats the only bummer about he MKII. On my operating table its a bit of
a challenge to have to swap out cables on the back of the rig. I guess
an extension off of the K3 could be made so one doesn't have to drag the
rig out to make the change.

Re: [Elecraft] KE8UW Re: Just finished K2 and finals look to be oscillating at 450KHz...

2009-10-21 Thread C. J. Hawley
Yes the W6 point gets 8 volts either thru the diode D2 or D6 depending on
whether in receive or xmit. I think I have an oscillator at Q5-Q6. I am
checking all the feedback chokes and capacitors. I may need to unsolder C118
and see if it is infact a capacitor inside the shell and maybe also C120. RFC6
checks ok, R49, R470, etc.
Thanks for the interest and help.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 and Beta 3.44

2009-10-21 Thread hb9brj

Don't know if the issue I'm observing is linked to the one described above:

When calling CQ in PACTOR FEC (simple 2-tone AFSK signal) in DATA-A mode, 5
ALC bars:
- up to FW 3.42: External wattmeter shows steady power close to the
requested power level
- FW 3.44: External wattmeter keeps oscillating between 50...100% of
requested power.
