Hello all,

yesterday and today morning I saw a random problem with my K3 in SPLIT

never saw this problem previously during my activations.

Re: [Elecraft] Antistatic work mat

Hmmm ... before building my K3 (just finished), I bought a wrist strap
and mat from Cables Unlimited at under $25 for both. Aside from cables
that are a little too short, them seem fine So long as there is a wire
with a 1-megohm resistor between a conductive mat surface and common
ground, what is to distinguish a good mat from one that won't really
provide the protection?

[Elecraft] K2 VFO Linearization problem

I'm to the point of doing the VFO linearization. I went into Cal PLL with

the reading just sits there, never decreasing, never displaying d and
never giving me an end message. I get no error codes either. Any ideas
what I'm doing wrong? Unit checks great up to this point. Thanks for any

Re: [Elecraft] RFI PC Speaker Hum

2010-06-03 Thread Julian, G4ILO

All computer speakers are amplified. Many of them have very poor immunity to
RF. I have sometimes reduced RFI to acceptable levels by winding a couple of
turns of the cables through snap-on suppression toroids. Winding several
turns through a large ring toroid would be more effective as the snap-on
suppressors are really only designed to suppress VHF.

Some computer speakers have such poor RFI immunity that they are probably
beyond fixing. One pair I bought made by Logitech hummed even when placed
near a cordless phone base unit that probably has an output power of a few
milliwatts. The first time I pressed the PTT of my transceiver the resulting
noise nearly gave me a heart attack. I gave them to a charity shop. There is
a firm (I think it may be the one that makes RigBlaster interfaces) that
advertises RFI-proof computer speakers, but I seem to recall the last time
they were mentioned on this reflector they were out of stock.

[Elecraft] K3 - I wonder

I wonder if it would be possible..

to capture the settings that are being changed by any button press on the K3

Then I could have the oops key I need so often to get back to the way it was
before I hit the wrong key again.

This could also be used as quick switch to most anything just to look and
then back again.

Oh, well, just wondering (or wandering, hi).

Re: [Elecraft] Antistatic work mat

2010-06-03 Thread Gary Hvizdak
Thu Jun 3 06:05:49 EDT Pete Smith (N4ZR) wrote ...

... what is to distinguish a good mat from one that won't really

--

Hi Pete,

A complete answer to your question will depend on the relative humidity
and on the susceptibility to ESD damage of the devices being handled. FYI,
the industry rates ESD sensitive devices into three classes based on their
susceptibility to damage:

o ESD Class 1 -- below 2,000 V
o ESD Class 2 -- 2,000 V to 4,000 V
o ESD Class 3 -- 4,000 V to 16,000 V
o Not ESD Sensitive -- above 16,000 V

Keep in mind that (WITH PROPER HANDLING) a sub-assembly may offer some
protection to the individual devices that comprise it, such that the overall
sub-assembly can withstand higher discharge voltages than the most sensitive
components that comprise it. This makes perfect sense since the highest
level assembly, i.e. a completed K3, is (generally) not ESD sensitive!

--- - - - ---

I also mentioned relative humidity in my opening sentence. FYI, at the
aerospace manufacturing facility (where I worked for ten years) even our
good mats were only adequate when the relative humidity was above 30%.
Below 30% RH air ionizers were also required at ESD work stations. These
devices aren't something you'll want to consider as they cost upwards of
$500! Oh, and they only protect a very small area, i.e. just a couple
square feet of work surface at most. That said, perhaps Elecraft would
consider using them in Aptos as an additional layer of protection?

--- - - - ---

In light of the above details, the best answer I can offer is that there
is an industry specification for the surface resistance of an ESD mat, which
is specified in the unusual unit Ohms per square. Alan Bloom addressed
this subject in early April of this year. Please refer to his post in the
archives at http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2010-April/127988.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - I wonder

2010-06-03 Thread Phil Hystad
This could very easily be a nice K3 Utility feature. Actually, a good model
for this feature is found in MS Visual Studio 2010 (and, earlier versions).
This allows the setup of the Visual Studio software to be saved in a file so
that it can be restored at a later time or even shared with others. Aspects of
how this might work on the K3 can almost use the Visual Studio feature as a
design pattern -- I am sure that the author of the K3 Utility (on Windows) uses
Visual Studio.

But, one of the nifty features of this settings save and restore thing is that
you can limit the scope of the save and restore to a subset of all of the
settings. Via a selection process that is part of the save or restore, you can
select various options or subsets of options to be affected. Thus, you don't
run into the hassle of overwriting some other setting that you want to keep
when you reclaim some other alternative setting.

I can see it now -- this Elecraft forum will become a great trading ground for
settings files. Sure, there are possibly some arcane settings to achieve
some kind of performance or feature but no bother, there is a file that does
that for you.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - I wonder

2010-06-03 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Wayne and David and I have made dramatic improvements to the speed of
configuration save and restore in upcoming K3 Utility versions (that depend
on recent MCU versions). It will take on the order of 5 seconds to save and
10 seconds to restore a configuration (once you've selected the
configuration file), and half of that is the MCU reset after restore.

Not every K3 front panel key press is currently available for an undo
stack. In particular, when I enter a menu and change a parameter, nothing is
sent to the PC host to alert it to a configuration change.

Few of us (including me) would be willing to keep a program like the K3
Utility connected to the radio during all radio operation to support an undo
stack.

During contests, my contest logging program controls the radio. At other
times it might be connected to a DX logging program.

Yes, I use Visual Studio. I'm stuck at VS 2005 because that's the last
version that compiles code that will run on Windows 98 SE / ME.

Phil, you should be aware that the Microsoft Visual Studio Program
Management / Development / Test / Customer Support team is a tad larger than
the K3 Utility, P3 Utility, K144XV Utility, W2 Utility, K3 Voice, and K3
Frequency Memory Editor team.

And there are cost/revenue issues. Visual Studio's features must be
whiz-bang to gather developer hearts and minds so that applications will be
written for Windows.

Not too many chose the Elecraft K3 over its competitors because of a
feature-rich K3 Utility. The K3 Utility needs to do a few jobs reliably. If
it were terrible, it could hurt customer satisfaction with the K3. It must
be simple to use so that occasional users can get firmware loaded with a
minimum of fuss.

I use Visual Studio all the time. It's a pretty feature rich environment.
And the learning curve was non-trivial.

Elecraft sells amateur radio equipment. The K3 Utility is offered to
customers without additional charge. It's a necessary adjunct to enable
customers to update the radio's firmware. The K3 Utility is not a revenue
source for Elecraft. Visual Studio (even with free Express editions) is
most certainly a revenue source for Microsoft.

Re: [Elecraft] k3dvr and Microham usb III

2010-06-03 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

USB III (Router) is transparent to the CAT commands. There is
no issue in sending any of the N1MM {CATASCxx} commands through
it.

Because USB Interface II, III and DigiKeyer connect to the line
in port in the transceiver, USB Audio CODEC is intended to
support DVK. That doesn't mean that a user can't configure the
K3 for mic + Line In and allow playback from the logger DVK.
The same applies to Ten-Tec Mic+Aux and some other rigs which
MIX the two inputs. However, microHAM will not support that
configuration or provide any assistance to configure it due to
performance and audio quality issues.

Hello Mike,

No problem using my K3's DVR with N1MM and the Microham USB III.
Using the F buttons to key the KDVR works great. Also tried the Enter

It's just a USB to serial interface (OK, it has a build in sound card) so
why wouldn't it work?

[Elecraft] Suggestion: Sell P3 matching enclosure

[Elecraft] K3 won't TX in USB??

Hello,

I can not get my K3 to transmit in Upper Sideband. Operation is fine

The K3 was functioning fine a couple of days ago, I assume that I

[Elecraft] K3 with Heil HC-5

2010-06-03 Thread John Lawrence
I've settled down on the HC-5 as the best sounding SSB TX audio. It was after
spending the time to determine that this was the right answer for the K3.

The TX equalizer should be tailored based on your own voice to give it the best
fidelity. Because of my great audio, I get asked what mic I'm using on many
occasions. Mic Gain setting:19 Compression setting: 24

Good luck

[Elecraft] K3 Mods

2010-06-03 Thread John E. Reiser
Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I did the following mods for my K3 #384, running FW 3.99:

K3DSPUPGD

K3 Negative ALC and External Band Data Pull-up Mod

Front Panel Mike Circuit Mod

IF Buffer Gain Mod.

I was scrupulous about ESD precautions, using a wrist strap and anti-static mat.

Before the mods, everything worked perfectly.

After the mods, receive seems OK, audio is improved, but I have some problems
on transmit:

1) Attempting to transmit RTTY with MMTTY now produces no RF output from the
K3. I use AFSK A for RTTY. It seems like I have no T/R switching. Tune, CW
and SSB work correctly and produce the expected output levels.

2) The K3 does not key up my ACOM 1000 amp on Tune or CW. It keys the amp OK
on SSB when the PTT button on the mike is pressed. It also keys the amp OK in
CW mode if the mike PTT button is held down. I checked that VOX is enabled for
CW. RTTY produces no output from the amp under any circumstances.

I have reloaded FW 3.99, and then went back to version 3.97 (all files), but
the problems remain. I have checked and rechecked and rechecked all cable
connections to the K3 back panel, as well as my CONFIG and MMTTY settings.
Everything looks OK, but I may have missed something. BTW, I don't use ALC
with the amp.

To summarize the problems:

1) The K3 produces no output in RTTY

2) The Key Out jack (for keying the amp) does not function with VOX.

Any ideas?

Many thanks and 73,

Eric,

Have you actually measured the temperature rise? I am interested in
just how much is excessively hot.
While it does get warm, I have always found the temperatures to be well
within spec for the output module.

I have an XV50 here for repair right now. It is next in line for work,
and I intend to get to it this weekend. After it is repaired, I will
measure the temperature rise on the bottom panel right under the heat
spreader. I have a Fluke 279 with a temperature probe available.

Report on Monday.

Hi Wes,

Good thought! I will check this out tomorrow. Maybe the new DSP audio
daughter-board affects the sensitivity of the VOX.

If, not, I'm just hopeful that someone has seen these symptoms before and found
a solution. Otherwise, I will need to take the rig all apart on Saturday to
check that everything is plugged in correctly. I'm pretty sure that it will be
a waste of time, because I am a very careful and experienced builder. I
carefully checked the pins on the various boards and connectors as I plugged
them in. Still, nobody's perfect, so you never can say.

I miss my K3.

Many thanks for your help and VY 73,

I posted some time ago and wanted to check if anyone has heard of a
solution or update to HRD to resolve the problem. Software boots up
fine. Then after 15 minutes, screen freezes and/or goes blue and
crashes.

This occurs using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with HRD v5.0. The HRD
Forums speak to the problem but no clear solution. Thank you all for
your time.

[Elecraft] Fwd: K3 won't TX in USB??

2010-06-03 Thread Tom Laszynski
Thanks to Dale Framer at Elecraft customer support, my problem has
been solved. Apparently, I had inadvertently (fat-fingered) changed
the crystal filters (500 and 2.7K) off-sets. Dale took the time to
talk me through the configuration menu options to correct the
condition where I could not transmit using the USB mode.

I certainly appreciate Dale's and Elecrafts help. Another good
reason to buy their fine transceiver - customer support! And, I'm
not even the original owner!

Thanks to all who responded my request for help.

Subject: K3 won't TX in USB??

Hello,

I can not get my K3 to transmit in Upper Sideband. Operation is
fine when in the CW and LSB modes. However, when I go to USB,
regardless of band, I seem to have no microphone gain or RF output.

The K3 was functioning fine a couple of days ago, I assume that I
fat-fingered one of the functions! Can anybody help me?

After the mods, receive seems OK, audio is improved, but I have some

 1) Attempting to transmit RTTY with MMTTY now produces no RF output from
the K3. I use AFSK A for RTTY. It seems like I have no T/R switching.
Tune, CW and SSB work correctly and produce the expected output levels.

 2) The K3 does not key up my ACOM 1000 amp on Tune or CW. It keys the

the amp OK in CW mode if the mike PTT button is held down. I checked

I have reloaded FW 3.99, and then went back to version 3.97 (all files),

2010-06-03 Thread Wes Stewart
As I write I'm camped on 14.080 trying to work E4X on RTTY.  My K3 is set to
mark=915.  I just set MMTTY to 2125 and I get full power on transmit.

Remember there was a VOX trip problem too.  That should not be affected by the
mark freq.  It will however, as I wrote to John earlier, be affected by the
Line In (Mic) gain setting.  This is the only radio I've ever seen where VOX
sensitivity is changed by the microphone gain setting.

[Elecraft] Re: XV50 cooling

2010-06-03 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Don,

The situation is - after I operate either XV144 or XV50 for a 10-15 minutes QSO
under 10w FM or 20 w SSB (the advertised rated output from Elecraft, p.3 of the
owner's manual), the bottom plate (or even one of side panels) is too hot to be
touched.

I would be very interested in your findings and fully appreciate your knowledge
of Elecraft products. After your test, I would be grateful if you could advise,
it is all ok to operate the XV50 / XV144 under Elecraft's rated output WITHOUT
the need of any modifications to remedy the heat issues.

It would be of great assistance if you could give your advice about the maximum
length of any QSO under the rated output.  In other words, say for example, I
should not use the XV50 / XV144 for any QSO longer than 15 minutes.  Or, there
should be 5 minutes cooling time between each 15 minutes QSO etc.

Thanks a lot in advance and look forward to your results.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: XV50 cooling

2010-06-03 Thread Don Wilhelm
Johnny,

Be confident that I will test at the 10 watt level (simulated FM) for a
significant length of time, and also Eric's situation - 10 watts, 1
minute on, 1 minute off. I did similar stress testing on both large and
small devices for the last 10 years of my professional career - I am
quite familiar with the procedures required to test to specification -
unfortunately, I do not have an environmental chamber available anymore
to conduct the test at the highest ambient temperature allowed for the
assembly, we will have to settle for a temperature rise measurement and
extrapolate from there.

If the temperature goes above the power module's spec, I will terminate
the test early (I don't want to produce a failure in someone else's
transverter), but will attempt to run for your suggested period of time
if the temperature stays within spec. Elecraft rates the transverters
at 10 watts continuous duty and 20 watts intermittent, the output module
is rated at 30 watts ICAS by the manufacturer, so Elecraft's rating
should be conservative.

This XV50 does have the vent holes on the bottom panel.

While it is nice to keep things cool, sometimes the device manufacturer
expects things to get too hot to touch comfortably. Despite my thoughts
that it may be hotter than desirable, I have to have faith that the
device manufacturer has done sufficient testing to substantiate his
specifications - users should hold the manufacturer's feet to the fire
if that is not true. We will see.

Evening gang:

Just got home from work and reading my male.I looked at the manual for
the XV432 to see how the internal fan is mounted and how it was hooked up.
It really doesn't look like much of a task to modify my XV50 and install
such a fan.

I contacted sales and was told the vented panels are not available. As much
as I hate drilling my own panels ( don't like messing up the paint ) I
see very little challenge in copying what Elecraft did with the 432 version.

I will wait Don, to hear the results of your tests before doing anything.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: XV50 cooling

2010-06-03 Thread Don Wilhelm
Johnny,

Prior to testing, I have reviewed the datasheet for the RA30H0608M
module that is used in the XV50. The power module is specified to
operate within spec at 110 degrees C ( 230 deg F). While that is too
hot to touch (in excess of boiling water temperatures), it is well
within the device specifications.
I am looking at the Mitsubishi data sheet for the RA30H0608M device.

I will see what my tests reveal, but I believe the answer will be that
the temperature is well within the device specifications.

The MTBF for the device is not specified in the datasheet, but it ia a
well known fact that the MTBF for any device decreases with the
operating temperature. So the early answer is that the output module
will likely operate within its specified temperature range, its
longevity might be extended by providing extra cooling to reduce its
operating temperature.

Testing will reveal the actual temperature rise - details later.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Has No Output on 80 or 40 When Hot

2010-06-03 Thread Phil-W6TQG
Hi Don,

Thank you for your help and information! K15 was the offender - when
hot, pins 3 to 4 and also 7 to 8 stay connected after changing the band
from 20m down to 40 or 80. This cuts off the path through K14 and K13 to
C71 and C72.

 Phil,

The problem will be found in the VFO Range Selection area.
 Look at the
schematic for the RF Board sheet 1.
Check the soldering of C71 and C72 and relay K13.
It is possible that when hot, the contacts of K13 (and
 possibly K14) are
 not making good contact.
Set to 80 meters and wait until the failure occurs, then power the K2
off and quickly (before things cool), check for continuity
 between K13
pins 3 and 4 also between pins 7 and 8 - both should be zero
 ohms - if
 not, the relay has failed.
Check K14 in a similar manner, but set to 40 meters - after
 the failure,
you should have continuity between pins 3 and 4 of K14 and
 also between
 pins 7 and 8.

The relay pins are numbered like an IC (pins 1 and 10 are at the same
end). Look for the round solder pad at pin 1 (or the end
 with the white
 stripe).

This is either a temperature related solder connection or a relay
 contact problem.

hot the readings are near 15,600 for 40 and 17,257 for 80.
 No wonder I

  Phil,

To use the base K2 BNC antenna jack, you must remove the
  KPA100 - if you
attempt to use that jack, the load impedance between the base
  K2 and the
KPA100 will not be correct, and strange happenings will
 be present.

A total lack of power (yes, a display of 0.1 or 0.2 watts is
  actually no
power out) is most likely a problem either in the bandpass
  filter or a
problem with the VFO. Try the VFO first - set the frequency
  to the low
end of the band and check the frequency with the counter
 probe in TP1
using CAL FCTR - compare your frequency reading with the
 chart on the
Schematic Key page. If you want to calculate the proper VFO
  frequency
it should be within a few kHz of the frequency on the dial
  plus 4915 for
  bands below 15 meters.

Check all the components in the bandpass filter area for 40m
  and for 80
meters. On 40 meters, be certain C6 is properly installed
  between the

 occurs for
power levels of 9 watts and 100 watts. The 30m through 10m

I can easily replicate the problem when the power amp is

so far it seems to be OK when it is completely unplugged

Turning off the power amplifier through the Secondary Menu

  40 and 80 are 0.1 1.01 - 1. With the power amplifier

K2, I temporarily connected the antenna to J4 on the K2, so

bypass the power amplifier path. This did not help the dead

  40 or 80. I also tried connecting a dummy load through a

  power meter to

  J4 and transmitting at 9W. Again 40 and 80 didn't work but

  the higher

I am assuming that the problem is in the LPF of the power

  amplifier, but

am not sure 30m is OK, while 40 and 80 are not. Any hints would be
  appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] XV50 cooling

2010-06-03 Thread Eric
Well, as I recall I could not hold my hand on it, but i only ran it without a
fan once when I first built it and my memory is hazy.

Remember digital EME is one minute on, one minute off for hours. I have run
four hours at a time that way without a break, and I'm sure others run longer.

Maybe it was still in spec, but why push it? All that extra heat can't
possibly make the XV more stable or less prone to failure than if it were
running at room temp. Mine does have the xtal oven if that makes a difference.
I don't know how much heat that adds to the system.

Eric,

Have you actually measured the temperature rise? I am interested in just how
much is excessively hot.
While it does get warm, I have always found the temperatures to be well within
spec for the output module.

I have an XV50 here for repair right now. It is next in line for work, and I
intend to get to it this weekend. After it is repaired, I will measure the
temperature rise on the bottom panel right under the heat spreader. I have a
Fluke 279 with a temperature probe available.

Report on Monday.

I have a late-model xv144 with holes in both top and bottom panels, connected
to k3 with milliwatt drive. It runs excessively hot at 10w out in digital mode
EME when used one minute on one minute off, so i dont think just getting new
panels will help you. I use a small muffin fan blowing air underneath with the
xv-144 up on the optional tilt stand and this simple solution works great.
I also use an xv-432 for eme at 10w but its internal fan keeps it cool.
Perhaps if enough people request a retrofit kit with an internal fan for the
xv-50 and xv-144 Elecraft would consider it. I'd pony up. The fan could attach
inside the top panel.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: XV50 cooling

2010-06-03 Thread Eric
Don, some other considerations:

1). What about the other components inside the XV? If the power module is
happy running at 100C what does that do for everything else in the XV running
at 60-70C with no airflow?

2). My ambient temp in the shack during EME is 80F even with the house A/C
running due to the tube PA.

3). Does the XV144 run at the same efficiency (waste heat output) as the XV50?

Thanks for your assistance. I look forward to your measurements.

Johnny,

Prior to testing, I have reviewed the datasheet for the RA30H0608M module that
is used in the XV50. The power module is specified to operate within spec at
110 degrees C ( 230 deg F). While that is too hot to touch (in excess of
boiling water temperatures), it is well within the device specifications. SNIP
